n such a competitive category, human resources and IT recruiter Annapurna HR’s phenomenal growth and profitability really impressed the judging panel. From a £686k turnover in year one to £2.56m in 2011, and a forecast of £5m for the next calendar year, Annapurna is also proud of its ethical credentials. Named after the Nepalese mountain and global environmental sanctuary, the firm is a member of the charity 1% for the Planet (www.onepercentfortheplanet.org), which donates 1% of its turnover directly to earth charities as nominated by our clients and candidates on an annual basis. Another impressive feature in its submission was its strong, established client base, having won large national and international blue-chip clients in a relatively short space of time. One reason for this success was the innovative use of its HR Transformation Network (HRTN), a leading HR thought leadership community consisting of around 3,500 HR directors, set up and facilitated by Annapurna. The HRTN meets eight times a year with guest speakers and gives Annapurna an excellent opportunity to build long-term relationships with a large community of candidates and clients both actively and passively. The network enables the firm to be recognised as pivotal leaders in terms of HR thought leadership and change, but also to have a living community of professionals to access when it receives contingency or search mandates. It has become a cornerstone of the business, giving unparalleled market knowledge and access to candidates at all levels, in all specialisms within HR.

mpact Recruitment Services, a supplier of staffing solutions for the commercial, industrial and driving sectors based in Northampton, impressed the judging panel with its clear objectives and strategy. Approaching its 10-year anniversary, Impact set a new strategy placing customers at the heart of everything they do, to achieve growth and improved business performance. This involved rebranding and launching a new service called Impact Extra, which offers all the employment help and information customers need at their fingertips. The new brand identity was launched in December 2010. The Extra brand mark was a symbol of positivity, with added business benefits, an A+ service along with the strapline ‘A real recruitment force’. The marketing consisted of four themed quarters based on customer insight and seasonal trends of their businesses, delivering digestible chunks of relevant information: • Q1 New Year, New Impact — announcing our new brand identity and to communicate why Impact are different. • Q2 Spring into shape with Impact Extra — essential employment support at your fingertips. • Q3 A leading recruitment service — reinforcement of our first-class core recruitment service. • Q4 Thank you for your custom — Christmas campaign. Impact Recruitment implemented a cost-effective, multi-channel strategy, which included a new website, PR and advertising in the local and business press to increase brand awareness, as well as direct mail shots and merchandise. The 2011 marketing spend show an impressive return on investment of 454%. The campaign encompasses all aspects of marketing and didn’t ignore traditional methods like mail shots ahead of e-commerce solutions.

Best Onboarding Strategy

N

etwork Rail’s entry demonstrated a real comprehension of an allencompassing onboarding strategy. The judges were particularly pleased to see not only that it is very inclusive but that the programme has support right from the top of the organisation. Previously, Network Rail’s onboarding programme was run by local HR teams and hiring managers, which meant that the employee experience was vastly different depending on the departments and regions they were joining. The resourcing team of five embarked on the biggest onboarding strategy shake-up in its history. The objectives were to build a better experience for new employees; to have a more consistent approach to educating new employees on Network Rail’s objectives, values and culture; to give line managers a framework to successfully integrate their new team member into their role; and to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, productivity and engagement of new employees. Now, all new joiners — from senior management to track signallers — are engaged in the same process, and educated on the corporate objectives, values and culture. By providing line managers with a set framework, Network Rail has also ensured that the induction process runs from an employee’s first few days right through to their first month in role. Monthly events are now held so employees can hear from, and network with, the executive leadership team. The idea behind this is to show every person joining how their role ‘helps Britain run better’ and give them the opportunity to ask the team questions about the future direction of the company. Feedback from those that have gone through the programme has been exceptionally positive. Employees felt a much deeper engagement with the organisation through a greater affiliation with the corporate mission and values. The opportunity to meet and ask the executive leadership team questions showed how important their role would be to the overall organisation.

Best Embedded Recruiting Team

T

he judging panel noted that the competition was strong in this category, which showcased recruiters offering exceptional service to their clients. Meridian Business Support, embedded at consumer product manufacturer Procter and Gamble’s (P&G’s) Northumberland plant, stood out because of excellent fill rates and the training provided to candidates. The P&G Seaton Delaval site produces fine fragrances, hair dyes and gift sets. The site operates on a produce-to-demand basis. P&G sites compete both internally and externally for business, and P&G outsources the recruitment and management of its temporary workers to Meridian. P&G operate on a ‘minimum temp’ basis for three months of the year. During this time, most existing workers are released and Meridian then sets about recruiting (up to 50 workers per day across a variety of job roles) for the resumption of higher production periods. In late April, to support this dramatic increase in volume, P&G moved seamlessly to 24-hour, three shift working patterns across the plant. In line with this increase, Meridian was required to recruit an additional 150 trained and qualified staff, increasing to 220 by mid September. During the rest of the year when production volumes are reduced, the challenge faced by Meridian was to support the site by retaining the pool of recruited and now trained workers. As a sign of the extent to which Meridian is fully embedded at the P&G site, the Meridian team introduced coaching roles for new starters to increase performance that reduced downtime, attribution rates and absence substantially. The judges said that the innovation of productivity awards and management information systems should also be recognised. Meridian has shown that best practice in recruitment does not simply stop once the supplied worker is recruited.

Best Candidate Experience

T

he recruitment team of legal firm Farrer & Co displayed an holistic, allencompassing view on how the importance of an empathetic candidate experience would and should work for both candidate and client. The judges found it was a great industry-leading example. Starting from the premise that the candidate is ‘king’, the recruitment team proactively seeks to map out the candidate’s journey from website and attraction, application form and interview experience, right through to offer, acceptance or rejection. Third-party recruitment agencies receive a weekly recruitment e-bulletin to ensure that key messages regarding the firm are easily accessible and can be passed across to submitted candidates, guaranteeing that they are both fully briefed and informed. Each year, the firm recruits 30 vacation scheme candidates to attend and participate in one of three programmes that are held at Easter and over the summer. The fortnightly schemes give candidates real work experience in two different practice areas within the firm, combined with other activities such as lunchtime seminars, a tour of the courts, firm-wide social events and a group case study involving legal research and presentation skills. Farrer & Co aims to deliver a 100% candidate satisfaction rate in relation to the recruitment of trainee solicitors. The candidates leave the vacation scheme with an honest understanding of the culture of the firm, the diverse range of work that the firm is involved in and the role that a trainee is expected to play therein. The high number of vacation scheme candidates who go on to apply (and in many cases, if unsuccessful on a first attempt, to re-apply) for a training contract is evidence of the popularity and success of those schemes. Whether or not the candidate is ultimately successful, they can expect to receive honest, helpful and meaningful advice. The recruitment team provides detailed and tailored feedback to each individual candidate which, in a tough jobs market, is invaluable to candidates. Ultimately, whether a candidate gets the job or not, it’s all about the Farrer & Co experience.

Best Candidate Care

T

he judges liked the comprehensive service to provide candidate care which Tangent International detailed in its entry. What stood out for the judges was the company’s exceptional growth and that Tangent put in place an ‘advance fund’ to support contractors in hard times. The specialist telecoms, construction and design recruiter has provided contractors or recruitment services to 175 countries and at any one time can have contractors working in over 75 nations. So a strong focus on excellent candidate care is essential to the future of its business, and the extensive pool of contractors the firm is able to call upon is one of the key assets. As contractors can be working in places as diverse as Afghanistan and Iraq to New Guinea and Haiti, sometimes contractors may find themselves short of money and last year Tangent helped out to the tune of £2m, providing an advance — free of charge — to those contractors working in challenging environments where access to banking facilities can be limited. The case studies also demonstrated a practice of going beyond the normal expected support. A prime example was during the Japanese earthquake disaster. Tangent’s team of account managers in the UK and Australia worked tirelessly over the weekend and into the week following the disaster to ensure that all of Tangent’s 40 contractors based in Tokyo and Osaka were safe. They arranged flights for those that wanted to vacate and accommodation for those that wanted to stay. They offered to fly immediately to Tokyo in support of the contractors but were advised not to by the customer. They kept in constant contact with both the customer and contractors over the following weeks as problems persisted with tremors and the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, North-East of Tokyo.

T

he judges admired the fact that the winner of this category, in conjunction with Creed Communications, recognised the need to refresh an existing referral scheme and weren’t satisfied with the status quo. Despite only having a budget of £10 per employee to launch, the new scheme was a huge success, producing tangible results. In a bid to revive enthusiasm for Lifestyle Services Group’s employee referral programme (ERP), which had begun to stagnate and produce lower yields, the recruitment team had to be creative. Calling the new ERP ‘Bucks 4 Buddies’, information about the new scheme was communicated via the company’s intranet, on posters throughout the business and flash banners on contact centre TVs. And the night before the launch a leaflet was placed on every desk, explaining the scheme and showcasing the Bucks 4 Buddies event the following day. The branding of the ERP for marketing purposes was red, so on the day the entire offices were covered in red balloons, ceiling hangers, posters, banners and numerous other items with the message ‘We love your mates’ also emblazoned on them. As well as creating a fun environment, the most innovative part of the campaign was the Bucks 4 Buddies Mobile App, so that employees are able to refer anyone, wherever they happen to be. Employees can discover the full benefits of the ERP within the App, make referrals in real time from their address books/contacts lists, email or SMS their recommendation directly to the recruitment team using their phone, and also notify the person they have referred that they would be getting in touch. It was judged an energetic, dynamic and impactful campaign, and 132 referrals were made on the launch day alone. The App has also reduced Lifestyle Services’ ERP application response time from one week to one day. The most impressive result must be that last year 44% of the company’s hires were made through the Bucks 4 Buddies ERP — more than 300 hires.

n an extremely closely fought category, where client and candidate service were exemplary, in the end — and for the second year in a row — Elite Associates Europe came out on top due to its luxury retail training programme to ensure candidates were well prepared for their roles with the top luxury retail houses. Given the roles being placed for one particular high-end fashion house in London’s Bond Street, this had to cover personal appearance as well as technical skills and Elite devised a course entitled ‘Putting your best face forward’. Presented by Elite employees, it had been written by Elite’s head of training, who is the former head of training for Clinique, exclusively for this project. Each person was trained in how to wear their uniform and the reasoning and importance behind the clothing they wear, as well as given information about product and the brand. All were instilled with a new value and pride in what they were wearing, how they presented themselves and just how important a position they were taking on. Every point was covered from make-up for the women through to shaving for the men. Once these individuals had gone through Elite’s training process they would then go through the client’s training in order for them to understand the ethos and the product lines in more detail. Following a massively successful trading period for the client, many of the temporary staff were taken on permanently and continue to work at the client’s flagship store in Bond Street.

Best Client Service inning its second honour of the night, social work recruitment firm Sanctuary Personnel was chosen as winner in this category because of its impressive results, despite working in a high-profile, emotive sector that many could see being a high-risk strategy. Particularly after the Baby P case, many local authorities across the UK experienced a vast increase in referrals, placing considerable pressure on social workers. Sanctuary Personnel provided a solution that went beyond conventional recruitment services. Drawing on dedicated teams, the Ipswich-based recruiter directly provided statutory social work to support local authorities’ assessment projects, thus reducing the backlog. The firm’s high level of client service care comes from a deep understanding of the social work sector, thus being able to deliver solutions that are in their clients’ best interest. Sanctuary’s staff are highly trained in conducting social service-specific interviews, allowing a greater understanding of the applicant and their suitability to work with children. This increases the quality of candidates put forward, who then contribute to the clients’ success. By providing outsourced child protection social work, which the company believes is pioneering, Sanctuary is able to support thousands of vulnerable children’s and adults’ cases by taking administrative tasks away from social workers, enabling them to concentrate on direct work with families and their households.

Rather than providing a positive candidate testimony, which the company says the majority of its 700 plus locums could easily give, Sanctuary demonstrated that it offered excellent candidate service even when things went wrong. In December 2010 a candidate’s contract was terminated by the Council he was then employed by and he was advised not to return to work after the Christmas period. Sanctuary’s operations director negotiated with the Council to allow the candidate to stay until the end of January to complete his work. The candidate’s designated consultant at Sanctuary then arranged a meeting with the candidate, his team manager and the service manager to discuss the reasons why they wanted to end his employment. Sanctuary’s consultant addressed the issues in detail with the candidate and offered an improvement plan. The Council agreed to let the candidate continue in his role throughout the improvement plan, which, consequently, resulted in the candidate keeping his job. The candidate sent Sanctuary a card, thanking them for all the help he was given.

ilestone Operations specialises in finding temporary and permanent jobs for professional drivers, warehouse staff and industry experts within the transport, distribution, industrial and utilities sectors. A progressive, growing organisation, among its many qualities was a willingness to invest in creative solutions, said the judges. Nowhere is this highlighted better than with its innovative ‘Smile Miles’ for its temporary staff. According to its company culture, when a driver or worker joins the company Milestone refers to them as a Colleague — with a capital C. And to help ensure they feel part of the company and are happy, Milestone launched the Smile Miles reward scheme. When Colleagues perform well at work, they are awarded with Smile Miles. The Colleague can bank these Smile Miles or exchange them for rewards. As well as encouraging loyalty and good behaviour, with the Smile Miles reward scheme the Colleagues feel like respected members of the Milestone team. The company has teamed up with rewards provider Red Letter Days, giving Colleagues the opportunity to exchange their Smile Miles for a huge number of experiences as rewards. The judges felt this scheme in particular showed an impressive engagement and a healthy culture, with the company really thinking outside the box.

Best Apprentice/School Leaver Recruitment Strategy he judges said it was great to see such high levels of engagement before, during and after the recruitment process and described Network Rail’s programme as thoughtful and supportive, recognising the problems and difficulties faced by young people getting onto the career ladder. With a national skills shortage in engineering, Network Rail is helping to foster new talent and its Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme is a key part of this commitment, aiming to attract joiners from backgrounds as diverse as the communities it serves. Year-on-year the organisation hires around 200 new apprentices, who spend one year training alongside the Royal Navy at Europe’s largest engineering training facility at HMS Sultan in Hampshire. They learn both the technical skills required to work on the railway, as well as developing leadership and teamwork behaviours, which will make them more effective in their roles. This innovation in partnering with the Royal Navy clearly impressed the judging panel, along with the firm’s commitment to the wellbeing and development of the apprentices. Especially outstanding was the work of the team of just three. In 2011, the team communicated directly with not only around 4,150 applicants but also nearly 10,000 people that expressed an interest in Network Rail’s apprenticeship scheme. Honest and inclusive information was shared not only with the candidates but also their influencers such as families, friends and support networks, including school and careers services. On average every candidate that started with Network Rail in 2010/11 as an Apprentice was communicated to nearly 40 times via email and text. This high level of engagement has achieved some incredible results during the past six years since the scheme was set up: applications have increased by 400% over the period; withdrawals at offer have halved; and retention of apprentices has improved by 87%, saving over £1m in recruitment and training costs. The apprenticeship programme is clearly an integral part of the resourcing strategy and the very strong and sustainable scheme certainly delivers on expectations.

or the second year in a row, CBSbutler is the award winner in this category and the judges felt the entry demonstrated what every specialist recruiter should aspire to be. “It was a clear, concise and succinct entry, summarising well the depth and breadth of their key achievement,” said one of the judges. “They are clearly at the heart of the specialist sector.” Last year, the recruiter undertook a number of challenging but extremely successful placements. They included coming to the aid of a construction company in Germany, which suffered from a high degree of absenteeism together with an acute shortage of skilled workers in the area. As a result, they had experienced frequent periods of downtime together with costly penalties for late delivery of products. By carrying out a detailed investigation with the company for the possible reasons for this, CBSbutler eventually sourced, trained and relocated Polish workers for the construction company. Moreover, the client expressed their delight at the improvement in quality and dependability of the Polish workers to the extent where the incumbent German workforce is now being gradually replaced. In the UK, to combat the shortfall of engineers and technical professionals CBSbutler initiated a programme called the ‘CBSbutler Working World’, which comprised inviting more than 40 major employers to act as ambassadors to promote STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, maths) to young people by participating in various events. This initiative has been invaluable in building the bridges between employers, the various educational bodies and young people. More importantly, it has promoted the CBSbutler brand as a socially responsible recruitment agency that’s prepared to invest something back in grass roots. To sum up, they strike the right balance between being proactive for the sector and being very responsible to the candidate. And with a really good insight to the industry, the judges saw great evidence that it was a trusted recruitment partner.

ecruiting and attracting the best pharmacists from university is extremely competitive and Boots UK has two schemes that ultimately impressed the judges. Graduates can apply to join Boots UK’s eight-week Summer Placement programme, while still in their third year, which delivers a comprehensive introduction to the work of community pharmacy, as well as to Boots UK. This is also a way of selecting those undergraduates, who show mutual suitability to Boots UK, to join the year-long pre-registration graduate programme. (Pharmacy is a four-year degree course, after which a pharmacy graduate is required to undertake a ‘pre-registration’ graduate programme to enable registration as a pharmacist professional.) The programmes have been built in conjunction with Boots UK teacher practitioners, who are in every school of pharmacy in the UK to meet the needs of the current pharmacy undergraduate syllabus. The teacher practitioners engage the students in joining the pre-reg programme through events held within the university. Each successful candidate is allocated a tutor to guide them through the programme. To provide continuity, the teacher practitioner from the university oversees the programme from a mentoring point of view, designing and delivering monthly face-to-face development days across the programme year. Boots UK’s pass rate for the pre-reg graduate programme, with over 90% passing the registration exam to become a pharmacist, also impressed the judges. Every graduate experiences a robust onboarding engagement, and although over 98% of graduates in the pre-reg programme have worked for Boots UK previously through the introductory summer programme. This demonstrates loyalty to the programme and allows Boots UK to develop the longer-term relationship with the graduate. In addition, the ongoing partnership approach during the training period of graduates also appealed to the judges.

Most Effective Employer Brand Development

inancial services firm LV= exemplified how a product brand has effectively been connected into the recruitment brand, with simplicity, and stayed true to its roots. The judges felt LV= was clearly an organisation that totally rebranded with great success. Back in 2007, Liverpool Victoria rebranded to become LV= and since that time, the company has grown significantly its general and life insurance business, from around 1,750 employees in 2007 to over 5,000 across 20 UK regional sites in 2011. LV= processed 26,000 job applications and filled just over 2,000 vacancies last year. Accommodating this growth has led to a need for more talent — meaning the company has had to stand out from similar businesses in a highly competitive field. At the heart of the new LV= brand is the proposition ‘Sharp with a heart’. LV= people are the sharp with the heart at the end of the phone — and so the LV= brand and value proposition became the employees. Working with media partner, employer marketing agency ThirtyThree, LV= built its employer branding campaign around the people — the LV= ambassadors. The strapline ‘A job you’ll love’ was introduced, along with a style and tone of voice that would stand out and resonate in a crowded marketplace. The judges described the entry as very comprehensive, engaging and detailed — simple and fun! It was a great example of how the new vision embraced not just the new hires but took into consideration the thoughts and opinions of existing employees. Creative executions included advertising on trams and buses, pop-up banners for exhibitions and talking posters. People can interact with the posters by taking a photo of it, texting it to LV= and the person in the poster will call them back and talk to the interested person about jobs, culture and life at LV=.

ity-based financial recruiter Goodman Masson scoops the award for Best Professional Services Recruitment Agency for the second year running, impressing once again with its thought leadership credentials, as well as the firm’s support for up-and-coming talent. Among the initiatives, Goodman Masson’s Finance Director Seminar Programme expanded when the company invited serving members of the cabinet to speak at two of its events. The judges admired the use of these relevant and engaging seminar speakers, which, in conjunction with the ongoing Finance Director Workshops, continue to offer advice and networking opportunities to the top finance directors in the business community. Goodman Masson’s support for students of CIMA — the world’s largest professional body of management accountants — was also recognised. The CIMA Bursary is a scheme designed to help aspiring accountancy students fund their studies and successfully complete their journey to qualification in a time when many companies were cutting study support. The Bursary occurs twice a year in conjunction with the CIMA exams in November and May. So far £36k has been distributed to 24 students. As well as supporting such students, the initiative also develops client relationships for the future. The judges also noted the well structured approach to actuary recruitment, praising the great results of six out of 12 offers in such a difficult and highly competitive marketplace. The innovative method included putting on a careers evening of presentations, networking and interviews in the client’s head office — and taking just six weeks from start to completion.

lobal engagement, implementation of a career centre that gives ease of use for managers and candidates, and demonstrating a number of providers working together in collaboration were just some of the points that made G4S an outstanding winner in this category. G4S recruits on average 200,000 staff per year and employs 635,000 people across the globe offering specialised security solutions, sometimes in hostile environments such as in Iraq and Afghanistan. Operating in more than 110 countries, the 135 corporate websites affiliated with G4S were disparate and required separate logins for candidates. There was no central database: no joined-up recruitment processes, no talent sharing — and candidate experience was disparate. The G4S Resourcing team wanted to create an exceptional brand experience which truly engaged with candidates. They wanted a recruitment process that would be ultimately self-serving, an innovative software solution, which promoted job opportunities to employees and global jobseekers. From numerous different systems, in just 14 weeks the small team (including five key suppliers) created one sleek, high-performance recruiting machine, launching it globally and exceeding corporate objectives. The G4S Global Careers Centre was implemented (November 2010). Existing recruitment campaigns were streamlined into the G4S Global Career centre and for the first time, hiring managers could post SEO-friendly vacancies from anywhere in the world. These vacancies appear in Google Search, on numerous social media channels and on the G4S Global Career Centre. G4S has revolutionised its recruitment process, embarking on an end-to-end technology solution encompassing multiple ATS integration, advanced matching and community functionality, and ensuring the end result works in more than 30 languages.

s its entry states: “Only at Antal can you speak with a Swedish consultant in Spain to be referred onto an English-speaking person in Shanghai who, together with the local Chinese team, finds a Mandarin-speaking European with exceptional experience.” In fact, that example is not rare for winning multi-national, multi-sector recruiter Antal International. In its entry, Antal demonstrated that it could set the international network to actually work together for the benefit of clients and candidates. For all its placements, an in-depth knowledge of the local market, culture and understanding of the required skills are paramount. Antal was given the challenge of sourcing a candidate for a particularly hard-tofill role in North Africa. The position was for a distribution account manager for a Dutch electronics, calibration and networks company. The niche skills for this role were in short supply on a global scale, but particularly uncommon in North Africa. To add to the complexity, the client required a candidate that was already based in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia or Libya. And coupled with the uprisings taking place at the time in many Arab countries, this was a tough assignment. Regardless of the challenges presented in this difficult brief including the unusual skill set, the location, language requirements and the social-political turmoil of the Arab Spring uprising, Antal was still able to source candidates for the role. Antal presented the client with a short-list of five potential candidates, of which one was successful. With all the political and social unrest, Antal was still able to find the right person for the job.

The company now has offices based in London, Manchester, Dublin and Hong Kong. The judges decided this entry showed fantastic examples of client service — creatively and proactively, they are committed to delivering the best experience for candidates and clients. An example given was with a Belgian-based international insurance business. Having excelled in delivering a number of actuaries in what is a candidate-driven and highly competitive market, the recruiter was asked to find the client a chief risk officer for a new Turkish operation in Istanbul. Despite having no previous business experience in Turkey, Oliver James Associates successfully placed the candidate within the expected eight-week process to the huge satisfaction of the client. A thorough knowledge of their market area also extended to finding actuaries in the Asia Pacific region, sourcing either local Chinese-speaking actuaries or finding expat actuaries with experience in international blue-chip insurance businesses. Oliver James provided a fantastic level of candidate support in terms of helping people to move internationally, and went the extra mile by extensively researching the Hong Kong education system should any of their candidates have children.

Most Effective Recruitment Campaign cCann London was a unanimous winner in this category due to the advertising agency’s appreciation of graduate values at the heart of the campaign. The strategy to attract graduates was to use a completely honest, ‘no holes barred’ approach, which basically told would-be graduate trainees that if they thought the advertising world was a glamorous, celebrity-filled, non-stop party working environment, then they had better think again. The best way of discovering honesty is through talking to people, so McCann set up The Truth Line. Using Skype, a dedicated line was introduced where interested candidates could dial up and ask any questions they liked. And the company would ensure callers would be answered openly and honestly. They also recognised that the best did not just exist in London. It was decided that the graduate recruitment team needed to go national with its talent search, and so McCann developed an innovative scheme, visiting 10 cities around the country in 72 hours. People were given the chance to ‘Win their way in’ and gain an interview through a competition using clues posted on Twitter. Using this approach gave McCann a face, a personality, approachability and credibility. More importantly it created a buzz not only among graduates but also within the industry and beyond. Leaving the tired old clichés to one side, it started an attitudinal shift towards recruitment advertising — and McCann.

he judges were certainly impressed with Nicoll Curtin’s international reach, placing contract and permanent staff in London and across the UK, Switzerland, Europe and global territories. The firm’s solid track record of delivery and innovative approaches to filling vacancies have produced a 70% sales growth last year, despite the tough economic conditions. Being thorough and really getting to know clients’ needs shone throughout Nicoll Curtin’s award-winning entry. The company undertook a complete analysis of the reasons behind a client’s ‘inability to recruit’ for a particular project, looking at the previously submitted candidates then investigating the client’s interviewing techniques. And using untrained interviewers was one of the problems that Nicoll Curtin unearthed. By demonstrating their knowledge of the client’s project and understanding of the right type of candidate, the client decided to use Nicoll Curtin as an extension to its HR team, allowing the recruiter to guide them on which candidates to hire. In addition, Nicoll Curtin’s experts offered the client coaching to improve the style and process of the interviews, which provided added value to the client. The judges were also bowled over by Nicoll Curtin’s consultants going the extra mile for their candidates. One candidate testimony summed up the general feeling of this support: “I cannot thank Nicoll Curtin enough for the support and help you gave during the interview process. You were an amazing ally during the entire process — the fact that you are still checking in with me is testament to that. he judges chose UK pharmacy-led health and beauty retailer Boots UK as the winner in this category due to the exceptional scale of the ambition to genuinely transform, deliver and engage with the large number of candidate applications. According to the judges, Boots UK’s entry was “a very well devised proposal in a category that everyone wants to win”. The innovation revolved around a new online assessment tool to help deal with the three-fold increase in applications for the company’s store colleague roles. The result is a new role profile being created for its customer assistant role, a new online assessment tool to select the very best candidates, a new in-store assessment and also training in the new process for hiring managers across the business. To date more than 200,000 candidates have completed the online assessment process and the time taken to hire new store colleagues has been significantly reduced. Previously, some stores would interview up to 12 candidates for a single role, whereas now they tend to invite three candidates to store for assessment — an impressive figure, according to the judges. “Boots should be very proud,” they concluded.

When a French mobile phone company in Kent faced the prospect of a service backlog relating to technician shortages, Transline Resource went from local recruiter to international recruiter and trainer in the blink of an eye, sourcing skilled staff from abroad to fulfil the client’s needs. As well as securing new contracts from the client at different sites, Transline established a new division, Transline Resource Technical, as a result of its experience. Both examples offered huge benefits to the clients and their businesses — as well as establishing Transline successfully in a new sector.

Best Technology Innovation

he judges agreed this was a genuine new technology that empowers hiring managers to have direct contact with candidates efficiently on a large scale. Launched in November 2010, TribePad brings the benefits of the internet to recruitment strategies. The SaaS (software-as-a-service) platform enhances the hiring process, making it ultimately quicker, more efficient and cost effective, enabling organisations to recruit and retain the best talent. TribePad connects hiring managers, jobseekers and employees in a seamless online environment. It is built in a similar way to a smart phone. All modules are like ‘Apps’ that sit within the platform. For the main recruitment apps there are candidate multimedia profiles, advanced candidate profile search, CRM/ATS functionality, ATS integration and onboarding. In addition, community features include groups, forums, a video channel and messaging. The platform enables organisations to locate, track and match talented and suitable candidates in one move as they continue through the recruitment process. In addition to having 200,000+ users with online profiles to search against and match jobs to, with on average 650 new users per day registering, by enabling organisations to have a direct resourcing strategy TribePad was able to save security solutions firm G4S an impressive £1m in just one section of their recruitment costs from launch November 2010 to October 2011.

ot only did Mark Kelly, sales team manager for SThree company Computer Futures in Dublin, achieve extraordinary figures for the IT business, he showed what good recruitment practice, discipline and sheer will can achieve. His billings topped £880k, also winning him the Number 1 Top Global Biller Award for SThree last year. Of his 103 placements, 85% have represented repeat business with 23 clients and a high percentage of these clients have entrusted Mark to fill multiple roles within their organisations. Mark is not interested in short-term one-off placements but long-term repeat business that will benefit him and his team. Ensuring the client gets the right candidate is his top priority. One of his many clients said: “Mark has tremendous energy and passion which I believe clearly comes across in his interactions with candidates. Mark always does a good job of finding the best candidate for any given role rather than try to shoehorn a candidate into a role for which they are not suitable.” And in the words of the judges: “Role models within our industry are difficult to find and when you see someone that exemplifies the right behaviours, you must recognise them.”

Agency of the Year

n the words of one of the judging panel, the “young, high-growth organisation is entrepreneurial” and is a “great company that breeds great people and has the environment to make them stay”. Established in 2006 to deliver specialist niche professionals across its four divisions in IT, engineering & power, SAP/ERP and banking & finance, last year Amoria Bond continued investing in marketing and its staff. And the investment has certainly paid dividends, going from a start-up to a turnover of £14m in 2011, with profits increasing by 50% to around £1m. The company has expanded overseas, with new markets including Singapore, Australia, Malaysia and Brazil, and staff numbers have doubled to 62. Amoria Bond’s CSR (corporate social responsibility) achievements also impressed the judges. Through the Amoria Bond Charitable Trust, the company hit is CSR target of raising £28k to build homes in a shanty town in Peru and a group of employee volunteers self-funded a trip to assist in the building of the homes. The company provided paid time off for the staff and matched donations — as well as taking the financial loss as a business resulting from 15 key players being away at the same time. The UK directors of the business have also given something back through a series of lectures to undergraduates at the University of Manchester on recruitment as a career and entrepreneurship. In addition, the thought leadership continues by providing expertise of the markets the company is in, as well as advising on changes to employment laws, to clients.

Best Recruitment Team

T

he recruitment team at global professional services firm KPMG stood out from the crowd by demonstrating an impressive turnaround in two years. From being described as ‘broken’ by one of the stakeholders, the KPMG team now delivers great talent into the business, providing strategic advice and adding value to the bottom line. This has been achieved through implementing a multi-disciplined strategy combining in-house expertise with outsource and offshore partners, making best use of leading-edge direct sourcing techniques, embedded social and digital media strategy and a review of the company’s graduate assessment process. Another key reason was the successful restructuring of multiple teams, enabling focused delivery of cross-function expertise — Experienced Hire, Senior Hire, Graduate and Mobility — through simple business-aligned account management teams. The team took on a much closer alignment to business strategy, so they could provide deep expert knowledge combined with flexibility to adapt quickly to ever-changing business and market needs. An internal professional headhunting team was set up, delivering market mapping, which the business commented was “more impressive than external paid headhunters”. Offshore recruitment process outsourcing (RPO), London-based RPO and outsource partners were separately integrated to provide the most cost-effective, seamless and flexible recruiting methods. An embedded social and digital media strategy resulted in a 500% return on investment in the first year. Despite initial reticence from the business, the recruitment team shifted the culture from agency reliance to direct sourcing from 40% to less than 2% in one area. All of which has delivered a £9m cost saving to the business and halved the cost-per-hire in one year.
