Garbage In – Garbage Out! In terms of Red Angus seedstock... only accurate data input from complete, well defined contemporary groups yield the most accurate and meaningful EPDs. In 1954 the Red Angus Association of America revolutionized the seedstock business with a performance registry that required a weaning weight. Red Angus Females Warrant ‘Cornerstone’ Designation In late-August in north Texas, we were still experiencing 95degree temperatures after 8 p.m. and I feel it is worth bragging about the Red Angus cows that endure – and excel in – all climates and environments.
Myself, like most of you, are just proud of the cattle we own. Now, I’m not talking about individual cows. I’m talking about the group as a whole – cows out there doing what we expect them to do and doing it better than we even imagined. Whether it’s in the drought and extreme heat we’ve had here this summer, or the intense north country winters that make this Texas boy cringe, it always amazes me how well Red Angus females perform when faced with weather adversities. Red Angus females are resilient individuals that always get it done. I have been amazed with how our cattle have performed through possibly the worst summer most of them have seen. They maintain and even flourish in times when we are sure they will under-perform. We have fallen in love with the highly maternal traits of the Red Angus cow and she has truly become the cornerstone of our breed. The definition of “cornerstone” describes the Red Angus female to a tee: “An important quality or feature on which a particular thing depends or is based.” If we break down that definition, it makes even more sense. “An important quality or feature” describes the maternal traits, and “on which a particular thing depends or is based” applies to the Red Angus Association of America. The qualities or features that we lump together as the maternal traits are – when broken down – the traits we like to talk about, the ones that make our Red Angus cows profitable and the ones that make us happy as ranchers. Looking at the things we tend to appreciate
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2018
in our cows, specifically Red Angus females, it’s easy to start with their calm disposition because cows that are quiet to work and handle are very easy to like. Secondly, their hide color makes them more heat tolerant than black cattle which can also help in handling. We all know a hot, riled-up cow is no fun to work. Both of these qualities also help aid in breed-up and calf gain. The maternal traits that increase profitability are heifer pregnancy, calving ease and stayability. We all understand the importance of calving on time and heifers calving unassisted. Plus, cows that breed back on time each year and remain in the herd aids in the number of replacement females we can market rather than retain to replace a cow who can’t do her job. These are the things that make us happy to own Red Angus cows. The demand for Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced females has never been stronger, and you don’t have to search very far in the market reports to see Red Angus females are earning a premium. They’ve reached this point by being steady and reliable cows for our commercial bull customers as they retain heifers back into their own herds. The second part of the “cornerstone” definition is “on which a particular thing depends or is based.” The RAAA depends on the reliability of the Red Angus female and she has not let us down. We constantly discuss how to gain a marketing advantage over others and the answer still remains the same – just keep making females who work consistently and others will continue to notice. The RAAA has established itself as the fastest growing breed in the industry due to the Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced females that have changed the perception of cattlemen across the country. These girls just plain work. They’ve earned the respect and attention the market is giving them right now, proving Red Angus females truly are the cornerstone of the breed, maintaining those cowherd-building traits day in and day out. ■

Documented Cattle Production: It’s Key to Accessing Better Markets In just a few months the calendar will flip to 2019, and we’ll find ourselves trekking through the last year of the decade. Can that really be possible? 2010 doesn’t seem that long ago, but time marches on at a rapid clip. Cattle and beef production methods have marched ahead too, with many advancements made along the way. The U.S. beef industry has changed significantly since the current decade began, and many of those changes are permanent. There’s no going back, as much as we might sometimes like. Documentation of our production practices is one material change that is here to stay. Access to the best markets – and best market prices – now requires that commercial cowcalf producers document more of what they do on their farms and ranches. Aspects of the operation, like calf health program and genetics that were not specifically recorded in the past, have now become important on which to collect data because the market ‘wants to know.’ Yes, the cattle market is more demanding and we need to take notice. Some producers may resist this trend, believing that nobody has the right to know what they do on their own operations with their own cattle. Fair enough. That is their right and they can do as they choose. However, this kind of thinking could lead to reduced market access and lower selling prices. It could mean receiving a commodity price for a better-than-average – but wholly undocumented – group of feeder calves. It does little good to produce a superior calf crop then choose not to document and share all you’ve done to build excellence into it.
Documentation = Access to better markets = Higher prices received
The obvious questions that follow are: What type of information do cow-calf producers need to document? And who will use this information and how will they use it? Four of the most important data points you can collect today relate to 1) health program, 2) genetics, 3) Natural/NHTC/GAP, where applicable, and 4) animal care and handling. A growing number of value-added programs require such information, and you’ll need
12 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2018
hard data and information to qualify your calves into specific programs. A simple example is Red Angus’ Feeder Calf Certification Program. To qualify, the calf crop must be sired by Red Angus 1A or 1B bulls, and walking bulls need to have been transferred into the buyer’s name in the RAAA database. A signed lease agreement is required in all bull leasing situations. If producers use artificial insemination, RAAA needs documentation via a semen invoice. Birth date of the first-born calf in the calf crop is also required, since FCCP certifies source, age and genetics. FCCP has been well proven to add value to Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced calves, but like all value-added programs, there is a documentation hurdle that must be cleared to be part of this program. Top Dollar Angus is the other major valueadded marketing program Red Angus is involved with. Producers must have sires and maternal grandsires identified on the calf crop they wish to qualify for Top Dollar Angus, and the average genetic merit of those sires must rank in the top 25 percent of the Red Angus breed for growth and carcass traits. If that information is not available or is only partially available, DNA testing can be used as a substitute to quantify the genetic strength of the calf crop via testing a statistically representative portion of the heifer calves. Like FCCP, Top Dollar Angus feeder calves almost always sell at a healthy price premium, but it takes the right genetics – and the ability to document those genetics – to gain access to the large buyer network Top Dollar Angus has assembled. Many other value-added program examples could be discussed, but the main point is that more often than not, documentation is required for entry into these big-league markets where the money is better. Calf health was actually first on the list provided earlier and should not be overlooked. If you maintain a good health program for your cowherd and on each successive calf crop, be sure to thoroughly document what you are doing. Treatment dates and specific products used are of interest to potential calf buyers. You can actually turn your documented health program into a marketing tool, which can help you receive a higher price on marketing day. n
THE LINE PARASITES CROSS AT THEIR OWN RISK
Better health means better production. So why not choose better parasite control? Cydectin® (moxidectin) Pour-On dewormer kills key parasites that threaten your beef cattle and has little to no impact on beneficial dung beetles. Make a healthier choice for your herd. Choose Cydectin.
SAFETY AND RESIDUE INFORMATION: Cydectin Pour-On: When used according to label, Cydectin Pour-On has neither a meat withdrawal nor milk withhold time. Do not use in veal calves.

Red-Headed Beauties
A Noticeable Difference While the Red Angus female has been identified as the beef industry’s mostfavored female in the past, her value only continues to grow. Superior Livestock Auction data has been evaluated by Kansas State University in partnership with RAAA since 2010 and, as more data has been added to the pool, the premium shown for Red Angus-sired heifers has consistently grown. The first set of results released included data from 2010 to 2014, and showed that Red Angus females commanded a $5 to $7 premium per hundredweight compared to other breed types. The most recent analysis shows that the price advantage for Red Angus-sired heifers sold through Superior has jumped to anywhere between $5 and $11 per hundredweight compared to others, based on breed type alone.
displaying the success that Toedtli Ranch in Colorado has experienced by using the DNA test. A Toedtli cow, which had always been a phenotypic standout, had a heifer calf last year that tested in the top 1 percent for both HerdBuilder and GridMaster on the Red Navigator test.
Another attention-grabbing moment was when Dick Cooper’s heifers, which were touted as the top-selling heifers in the same sale last year, actually outsold themselves compared to the year before. One lot of Cooper heifers had buyers competing until the gavel dropped at $201.75, confirming the chatter heard throughout the week at Sheridan that Red Angus heifers are simply worth more.
The quantifiable advantage in the value of Red Angus heifers has not gone unnoticed by cattle producers. At the Superior Livestock Big Horn Classic in Sheridan, Wyoming, held in August, the premium for Red Angus-sired females was obvious. Red Angus females first drew attention on Tuesday when both the highselling cows and bred heifers in the entire auction were Red Angus.
Making the Best Better The advantage of Red Angus over other breed types is a hot topic of conversation amongst beef industry enthusiasts, but, as the saying goes, ‘If you’re not moving forward, you’re moving backward.’ To continue the momentum that Red Angus currently has in the marketplace, we must focus on continual breed improvement and aim to increase the maternal advantages that Red Angus females already possesses.
As the week progressed and calves from the larger regions sold, Red Angus had more victories to claim. In the heifer division, Red Angus-sired lots topped every weight class from 500 to 650 pounds. One highlight included Dwayne and Buddi Anderson’s 530-pound heifers that brought $217 per hundredweight.
One way to improve on commercial females is by utilizing tools for genetic improvement such as Red Navigator. Investing in Red Navigator is really an investment in the future of the cowherd for commercial producers. Red Navigator was showcased at the recent National Red Angus Convention in Watertown, South Dakota,
16 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2018
While identifying these top-end genetics in commercial herds is crucial to continued improvement of the Red Angus breed, perhaps more important is identifying poor genetics which are holding your herd back, and culling those genetics from your inventory. In addition to the percentile ranks provided by Red Navigator, there are other advantages that may not be so readily apparent. Feedback received from current Red Navigator users indicates that the sire identification included with the Red Navigator results has been a valuable resource for many. One producer shared that, because of the sire identification received through Red Navigator, he was been able to identify a bull that had been siring females who fight their calves, creating unnecessary headaches during calving season. Once the producer was able to determine which bull was siring poor-dispositioned cows, they removed the bull from their bull battery. There is a lot to be excited about in the Red Angus breed. Producers certainly have the right to be proud about the high-quality cattle they have brought to market this year, and the premium prices those cattle have received. However, we must not get stuck in contentment, but continue utilizing the tools we have to advance the breed forward so Red Angus can thrive as the beef industry’s most-favored female. n

Member Services Bulletin Registration Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Multi-Breed (IGS) NCE? The NCE (National Cattle Evaluation) is a process through which RAAA calculates EPDs for animals in the RAAA database. To ensure inclusion in the NCE, please provide all data possible. The process in which EPDs are calculated changed to BOLT. To learn more about the process please read articles written by Ryan Boldt in previous ARA editions, starting in May/June 2018 on. Ryan will continue to update members through his Breed Improvement articles and in weekly eNews. What are the requirements of Total Herd Reporting (THR)? Each cow on active inventory (16 months of age and older) should report one of the following THR requirements: 1) Calf record through weaning, 2) Reason code for no calf, or 3) Disposal code for the cow. Calving season for spring is Jan. 1 to June 30. Calving season for fall is July 1 to Dec. 31. Do I have to report calves born dead or that die shortly after birth? Yes, each cow must have a calf record or a reason code for no calf reported every calendar year (THR compliance). Sire, dam and birth date and/or birth year are required with applicable disposal code for calf. What does the registration type indicate? R – Registered, met all requirements for registration I – Incomplete, pre-registered prior to reporting weaning weight and date. Once weaning data is reported, the calf will move to registered status. C – Compute, record on file giving the cow a record for having had a calf, but the calf is not considered registered and cannot be transferred or used as a parent, and will not display EPDs. H – Lease agreement, not on file for natural mating of a non-owned sire
U – Has not met all genetic defect requirements Z – Has not met DNA parentage requirements B - On hold for DNA exclusion in pedigree What information do I report when submitting calving records? The following is a list of fields of information for data reporting of calving records under THR guidelines. Please note, RAAA does have an Open Herdbook, therefore fields of information may vary for the reporting process. If you have questions, please refer to the Rules and Regulations or contact the Member Services Department. • Dam Registration Number • Sire Registration Number • Calf ID/Prefix • Date of Birth/Birth Year • Sex • Birth Weight Group • Twin Code • Mating Code • Color • Horned/Polled/Scurred • Registration Code • Print Registration Paper • Name • Wean Date • Wean Weight • Wean Group • Feed Code
What data points can I report that will enhance my animals’ EPDs and Accuracies? For more information on EPDs, please visit the RAAA website at redangus.org/genetics/ranchers-guide-to-epds • Calf Record with Pedigree Information • Birth Weight, Weaning Weight and Yearling Weight • Calving-Ease Scores • Body Condition Scores • Dam Mature Weight • Udder Scores – Suspension and Teat Size • Heifer Exposure Data • Ultrasound Data • Actual Carcass Data • Genomic Test
24 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2018
Increased Data = Increased Accuracy = Increased Reliability What are No Progeny Reports? Females listed on the No Progeny Report are active on inventory, but have not yet reported a record for compliance of THR requirements for Fall 2017. The report should be used to submit a progeny record, reason or a disposal code for the previous calving year. If information is not reported for each cow, the females will be subject to inactivation in October. If all dams were reported on the weaning data worksheet, then you will not be requested to complete a No Progeny Report. The report can accessed on-line. A printed report can be mailed upon request, if needed. Please request as soon as possible. Reports are due the third week in September. Avoid Reactivation Fees Dams previously listed on the Fall Herd Inventory will be inactivated if a calf record or a reason code for no calf is not submitted for the calendar year 2017. Inactive females will be listed under the default group, Inactivated Cow Inventory. To avoid reactivation fees submit a 2017 calf record or reason code by Dec. 1. Spring 2018 Weaning Worksheets As a reminder, report Spring 2018 born calves after birth and weaning weights are taken. Data may also be reported online in REDSPro. Please reference the Registering Cattle video tutorial for stepby-step instructions. The video tutorial can be found at redangus.org/herd-management/how-to-guide. To ensure data is included in the next National Cattle Evaluation, data should be returned by the end of October. Time to Update All Cooperator Agreement(s) If you have been a participant in an agreement between Agent and Cooperator, those original agreements have become null and void. The terms have also changed and will need to be reviewed by each participant, new agreements will require both the Agent and the Cooperator's signatures, a start date and specific end date.

Member Services Bulletin The agreements should be renewed at the end of those terms. Once the agreement has ended, the access of the Agent is complete. The new agreement allows the Agent to gather data for marketing purposes (sale catalogs and promotion), complete registration status if needed, and transfer animals after the sale. The Agent only has access to animal data and not personal information such as billing, and the agreement lasts for the time specified by the Cooperator. The new updated agreement is available for review and print at redangus.org/herd-management/forms. All agreements should be forwarded to the RAAA National Office via mail, fax or email to attention of either Angelia or Amanda. DNA Frequently Asked Questions
When should I submit DNA? DNA samples cannot be submitted too early. With new sampling methods like TSUs, calves can be sampled at birth and then submitted for testing before weaning. Weaning time also presents a great opportunity to collect DNA samples. To prepare for DNA testing, consider the following: • Order Test Kits from the National Office ahead of time. You can always order more kits than needed! • If animals are being requested for Genomic (GGP-HD, GGP-LD, GGP-ULD, Zoetis 50K and i50K) testing, they are re-
quired to have a registration number. • Think about submitting an electronic order form to dna@redangus.org to help speed up the submission process. Why should I submit DNA early? • Completion of registrations or transfers in a time sensitive situation. • Ample time for pedigree and EPD updates to occur before a catalog deadline. • Ensure failed samples can be re-submitted and processed to receive results. • Excluded animals to be resolved and reflect the correct parentage results. What is the turnaround time? One round of testing will take 15 to 20 business days. This can vary depending on the quality of the samples submitted. Samples that fail the first testing process are always tested a second time in an effort to retrieve data from the sample. If this occurs, the entire testing time can take 30-plus days. This time does not include the short period an order will spend in transit and at RAAA.

LONG-TERM. That’s Why You Need LongRange®(eprinomectin) For Up To 150 Days Of Parasite Control.1 Looking out over your herd, the sight is full of potential. But if you used a short-term dewormer like Cydectin® (moxidectin) or Dectomax® (doramectin) on your stockers, you’re not getting the most out of your pasture. That’s because cattle were probably reinfected with parasites just halfway through the grazing season.
Only LONGRANGE delivers true season-long control.1
40 lbs.
In just 104 days, LONGRANGE steers gained 40 lbs. more over those treated with CYDECTIN + SAFE-GUARD® (fenbendazole).2
Out here, there is no time for shortcuts. This year, think LONGRANGE.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extendedrelease anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. STORAGE Store at 77° F (25° C) with excursions between 59° and 86° F (15° and 30° C). Protect from light. Made in Canada. Manufactured for Merial, Inc., Duluth, GA, USA. What sample type should I collect? Tissue (TSU) is the best, but blood is acceptable as well. Hair is the most time consuming as the lab has to manually handle each sample to extract the DNA. Due to these reasons, there is a $4 processing fee for hair samples. The only time hair should be submitted is if TWIN animals will be tested (blood samples on twins will fail). However, TSUs are recommended for twins, and preferred for all animals. How can I prevent any delay in results? Submit high-quality samples with a completed order form that includes payment. Filling out your order form in Excel and emailing it to dna@redangus.org will help streamline the submission of your order. All orders must include a signature that accompanies the RAAA Terms of DNA Submission. If you complete an Excel form, be sure to print and sign the first page and include it with the samples. Should animals be registered prior to submitting DNA? If at all possible, yes. This ensures that DNA results will automatically be updated to REDSPro. When registration numbers are provided, we will correct the animals in REDSPro to match the parentage results. Registration numbers are required for all genomically enhanced tests (50K and GGP). If samples submitted for any other tests do not have a registration number, the member is required to provide them to RAAA for results to be entered in the database. Why do samples fail? • Cross Contamination (fresh, wet samples stacked on top of each other, needle used more than once, twins, hair samples not carded or trimmed and mix together during shipment to RAAA).
28 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2018
• Dirt, feces, dust, fly spray, tattoo ink, extreme heat, lotion, direct sunlight, etc. • TSU not sealed properly or crushed, fluid leaks out and sample deteriorates. • Blood card is flooded, not dried and felt cloth sticks and dries to card. • No TSU in tube, one drop of blood, hair does not include visible follicles. What does Qualified, Excluded, and Not on File mean? Qualified = Match – A sample from the sire/dam listed is on file and, when compared to the tested sample, was confirmed as the parent. Excluded = Not a Match – A sample from the sire/dam listed is on file and, when compared to the tested sample, did NOT confirm as the parent. Results in a “B” status/hold. Not on File = A sample from the sire/dam listed was not found. The parent does not have a DNA sample at the lab or in SNP format, and cannot be Qualified or Excluded. Failed = The sample on the animal tested did not receive data. There was an issue with the sample and resubmission will be required if data is desired. What is Red Navigator? Red Navigator is a test designed for commercial females that are at least 75 percent Red Angus. Females submitted for Red Navigator receive a percentile rank for the RAAA EPD suite and indices. The test is designed as a tool to use alongside phenotypic selection of replacements and includes verification to the sire (if on file). Upon the completion of the test, RAAA Commercial Marketing Specialist Katie Ochsner, will follow-up with producers to help them sort and interpret the results to best fit their operations. The cost is $25 per head. Producers interested in this test should contact the RAAA for further information. ■

R
eproductive efficiency is job one. Our cows have always been expected to get a live calf on the ground, get bred back, and bring a healthy calf into the weaning pen. She must do that all on range, with a minimum input of time, money, and feed. And then she must do that year after year after year. Finally, those calves must go onto the feedyard, perform well, and hang the kind of carcass that brings you a PREMIUM. That kind of program takes YEARS to develop, and discipline to continually maintain and improve.

BOLT Upgrades Calculation Method for Calving Ease, Stayability EPDs Breed percentile rank assists stakeholders in learning new base
Red Angus Association of America Boosts Reliability of EPDs with BOLT by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications
Cattle producers can expect more accurate predictions with the release of the fall 2018 Red Angus EPD suite, calculated using the much-anticipated new genetic evaluation software Biometric Open Language Tools, or BOLT, by Theta Solutions LLC. The new BOLT-generated Red Angus EPDs will enable producers to make more informed, lower risk selection decisions. Ryan Boldt, RAAA director of breed improvement, stated that BOLT-generated EPDs are very beneficial for Red Angus producers moving forward.
by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement
“The BOLT analysis is able to use pedigree, performance and genomic information simultaneously to calculate EPDs. Through this method, we are able to improve reliability and squeeze more valuable information out of the data.”
By examining the genetic trends in Red Angus, it is obvious the traits Calving Ease and Stayabilty have long been important factors in selection decisions. With the release of the IGS Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT, several notable changes will be occurring to the way that EPDs will be calculated for these traits.
One factor lending itself to the increased accuracy of the EPDs is the sheer size of the database, which is composed of nearly 17 million animals from 13 different breed associations. Generally speaking, the accuracy of prediction increases proportionally with the size of the data pool. Additionally, BOLT uses a subset of DNA markers that influence economically relevant traits. This method of analysis reduces the statistical noise of unimportant markers, which boosts the accuracy of its EPD predictions. Another advantage of the BOLT software is the frequency of data analysis, which can be done weekly.
For both traits a large change is that RAAA is moving from a single breed to a multi-breed data set for EPD calculations. Both of these traits were previously calculated using only data available in the REDSPro system. Now these EPDs will be calculated using the data from the entire 17 million pedigree and performance records in the IGS database. This vast amount of data allows for the ability to better account for heterosis in EPD calculations which can have large affects on both Calving Ease and Stayabilty. Additionally, this allows for more progeny to be incorporated in to the EPD calculations of animals that are used across different breeds. Another notable change is the transition from a “blending” approach to a “single step” for incorporating genomic information. Using the single-step approach, the genomic information is included simultaneously to their EPD calculations. By doing this the genomic information not only benefits the animal with the genotype but its relatives and contemporaries as well.
36 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2018
"We've reached a real milestone in the history of Red Angus with the release of BOLT-generated EPDs," says Tom Brink, CEO of the Red Angus Association of America. "One of our long-standing core policies is to utilize the best science available once it's ready, and that is certainly true with BOLT. Breeders and commercial customers will now have access to better genetic prediction tools, which will enable them to make multi-trait improvement like never before." Red Angus was the first breed to implement Total Herd Reporting and has been doing so for two decades. The utilization of THR has created an accurate database of Red Angus genetics and EPDs, which are trusted by farmers and ranchers. Furthermore, Red Angus EPDs are displayed with their in-breed percentile ranking to assist with selection decisions in the context of how individual animal traits rank within the Red Angus population. BOLT plus Red Angus’ strong base of THR data, combined with a large volume of genomic data from tests provides EPDs with unsurpassed reliability. The information from genomic data can be as informative as a bull’s first calf crop or a cow’s lifetime production record. For more information on BOLT and Red Angus EPDs, visit the Genetic page on RedAngus.org or contact Ryan Boldt, RAAA director of breed improvement at ryan@redangus.org or (940) 387-3502, Ext. 12.

BOLT Upgrades Calculation Method for Calving Ease, Stayability EPDs The models used for calculating Calving Ease and Stayability in the BOLT evaluation now allows inclusion of a larger amount of the available data. The previous models had restrictions on which records were able to be used in the analysis. However, these new models remove some of these restrictions and allow for a higher percentage of the data to be used. Several of the changes that affect the calculation of Calving Ease Direct and Calving Ease Maternal EPDs are changes in the phenotype and the base. The previous genetic evaluation used binary scores of assisted or non-assisted births in the analysis. The BOLT analysis uses the actual calving ease scores. What this allows for is the ability to differentiate observations by the level of assistance required. By moving to the BOLT analysis, the base of calving ease EPDs has also changed. A base is essentially a number that is added or subtracted to every EPD in the analysis. With the new BOLT analysis Calving Ease Direct EPDs tend to be higher than previous EPDs due to this change in base. This is very important because these numbers are now higher therefore it is important to look at percentile rank for these EPDs to familiarize yourself with this new base.
Red Angus Ranch Tested. Rancher Trusted.
The Stayability EPDs also have undergone an improvement in the model that is used for EPD calculation. The BOLT Stayability EPDs are calculated using a Random Regression model. A Random Regression model is designed to evaluate observations that are taken over time. Now all of a female’s observations from her second to fourth calves will be included in the analysis. In the previous genetic evaluation, females were given one observation for Stayability that was determined by all of her calving information up to that point. Another important distinction is that the Stayability analysis uses data only on females that first calved as a 2-year-old. With these changes, re-ranking of animals will occur for not only the EPDs themselves but for indexes as well. The HerdBuilder index uses both Stayability and Calving Ease EPDs in the calculation of that value. If an animal re-ranks for either one or both of these traits, we would expect their index value to change as well. It is also important to remember that both of these traits are important pieces of the HerdBuilder index. Therefore changes that are seen within the rankings for each of these traits in the new analysis will also be reflected in each animal’s HerdBuilder index value. ■

Programming Adds Pull-Through Marketing Along the Supply Chain
by Jared Wareham, Top Dollar Angus General Manager I finished up last month’s column by touching on “program” cattle and the steady demand they’ve seen. A substantial price divide between conventional, non-program cattle and those with documented, program-driven value was easily observed by watching hundreds of thousands of forward-contracted cattle sell over the course of this summer. Furthermore, as I visit with cattle feeders and yard managers all over the country, a common thread amongst many was their preference for cattle with programs or programming behind them. To better understand what is driving this demand, let’s define what programming means and why it has become such a pull in the marketplace. The following are all examples of programs: Top Dollar Angus, Red Angus FCCP, NHTC (Non-Hormone Treated Cattle), Certified Natural, GAP 4, and so on. Cattle that carry these labels or badges have been audited, evaluated or scrutinized by an independent third party to differentiate them from conventional feeders. These added layers of third-party documentation reinforce value through relationships between genetic potential and profit, as well as enhancing the attraction of those cattle within the value chain all the way through the consumer. As I mentioned last month, the more value your cattle have when the next owner becomes the seller, the more potential you have for premiums. Consumer demands for source and age, non-implanted and/or antibiotic-free cattle has created a pull-through motion within our supply chains, domestic and global, for cattle that are documented to meet these specs. By providing linkage to the consumer and establishing the foundation for transparent production that comes with a “story,” additional margin has been built into the value chain. Audited genetic evaluation also has an important role to play. For example, feeder cattle with documented genetic ability to excel for growth may be highly advantageous when feeding and marketing non-implanted NHTC calves. Programs, like Top Dollar Angus, help connect the ranch to the feeder by pinpointing cattle that feed cheaper and harvest better. Whichever way you look at it, increasing the opportunity for profit or decreasing the risk for loss, having an advanced “scouting report” on available feeders has value. As with most things, there are costs associated with programs. The classic sentiment that “you don’t get paid for that stuff” still remains in parts of our industry. Though these cattle currently demand premiums, the participation expense must be evaluated by each individual ranch through breakeven analysis.

Is the juice worth the squeeze? Furthermore, you must also consider how well your current ranching strategy aligns with the programs that do exist. For example, if you don’t have the resources to sell weaned calves, participation in a Natural program may not be as valuable to the next buyer. The increased health risk of bawling calves doesn’t match well with a program that has the potential for disqualification of calves that require treatments. Remember, decreasing the discountable nature of your calf crop for the next guy, will open up the door to more margin (i.e. potential profit). There are two sides to the risk equation you must evaluate when deciding how to market your calves. Do you expend the resources to have your cattle audited, verified and documented, risking that they won’t bring enough to justify the effort or expense? Or, do you commit to being conventional and place a cap on their value. Both scenarios offer a risk position that must be evaluated ranch by ranch. Moreover, many of the available programs are driven by the consumer and directed by an industry undulating toward alignment. I wouldn’t count on them fading away. More than likely, they will simply evolve. ■

Red Angus Cows are Key Component to Life Well-Lived by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications
58 American Red Angus Magazine â– October 2018
“Red Angus has been a God-send for us,” said Gary Schreiber. That’s enough for commercial producers near and far to perk up their ears.
On their ranch, nestled in the rolling hills of northeast Kansas and abundant with brome and fescue, Gary and Annette Schreiber strive to produce the best set of calves possible from their Red Angus cows. Utilizing value-added marketing, sound scientific protocols and sustainable conservation practices, they pursue the American dream: building a life they love and passing down their business, and knowledge, to the next generation of ranchers. The Schreibers aren’t unlike many other commercial cow-calf producers. They both have full-time “town jobs” near their hometown of Soldier, Kansas, where they have lived for nearly 35 years. The Schreibers, who are the true definition of a team, have three sons – Luke, Matt and Garrett – who all live nearby with their respective families. The Schreiber ranch is unquestionably a family operation at its core. Garrett and his wife Kayla have started their own herd and often work side-by-side with Gary and Annette. “Our family has been committed to the long-term goal of building a herd of moderate, productive and docile cows since the very beginning,” Gary affirmed as he and Annette shared a smile and set a jovial tone – a tone which anyone can tell has been a constant presence in their 40year marriage. Red Angus became a major player in that long-term goal approximately 15 years ago when Gary and Annette decided to buy some Red Angus cows. Prior to that, the Schreibers had chosen to run primarily Simmental cows crossed with Red Angus bulls, however they were experiencing challenges with birth weights, so they purchased some Red Angus cows to help mitigate those problems. Over the years, they have also transitioned from a spring-calving herd to a fall-calving herd in order to lessen their stress.
Annette and Gary Schreiber
“Ever since we incorporated Red Angus females into our herd, our stress level has gone down and we are coming home to fewer wrecks,” Gary insisted. “Calving season is far less time intensive since we now pull fewer calves – our cows have definitely made our lives easier and they have a wonderful disposition.” Gary and Annette also point to cow size as one reason for introducing Red Angus genetics into their herd. American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2018 59
Red Angus Cows are Key Component to Life Well-Lived “With land availability and prices being as high as they are, we have to do more with less. We try to get multiple sessions of grazing or cuttings of hay off of our land. We practice rotational grazing and try to make the land go as far as it can. Big cows eat more hay and feed so we lessen their impact by keeping our cows moderate, yet productive.” They are proud of the heifers they raise every year, so they retain the best 20 percent of their females as replacements. This year, the Schreibers plan to incorporate the Red Navigator DNA test to help them determine which females to retain in the herd. The Red Navigator test provides vital genetic information regarding HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices, EPD traits and parent verification, and provides results in the form of individual percentile rankings compared to all other Red Angus genotyped animals. Not only are the Schreibers exceedingly pleased with their cowherd, they have been avid promoters and users of the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program and point to it as one of the keys to their successful business. Purchasing Red Angus bulls has been a mainstay of their decades-long ranching legacy. The FCCP, or the “yellow tag” program, is the beef industry’s longest running and best recognized USDA-verified genetic,

Red Angus Cows are Key Component to Life Well-Lived Furthermore, data from Superior Livestock Auction shows that FCCP-tagged Red Angus-influenced calves bring a $2.80-perhundredweight premium over Red Angus-influenced calves without the yellow tag. “Our FCCP-tagged red calves sell right at the top of the market with the black calves and have for the last several years. We do our best to set our calves up for success for the next guy in line and do as much as we can to help them out and make it easier for them at the next stage.” In line with their “pay it forward” attitude, the Schreibers are committed to a thorough vaccination program and wean their calves for 45 days before sending them to the auction market. Even though they do not retain ownership through the feedyard, Gary maintains that they try to do the right thing to produce consistent calves every year that work for all producers. Over the past several decades, the Schreibers have built a herd – and a life – of which they are tremendously proud. They are also deeply entrenched in their community and devote much of their spare time to their church, where they coordinate a marriage preparation mentor group for soon-to-be married couples. Paying it forward is a constant thread in their lives and it runs central to their cow-calf operation as well. As Gary and Annette look towards the future, like many beef

Want High-Performing Feedyard Cattle? Don’t Overlook the Basics. by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications
Dr. Gary Bryant has seen his fair share of feedyard cattle. A Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine graduate, he has made a living working in the cattle feeding industry, first as a private practitioner in Dodge City, Kansas, and then, for the past 19 years, as a consulting veterinarian for backgrounding yards and commercial feedyards in southwest Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado. A cattleman himself, he grew up in the feedyard business and has a cowherd of his own. To say the least, he knows his way around the business end of a bovine.
Bryant is also well aware of the challenges associated with managing newly arrived calves at the feedyard. According to Bryant, there are three to four key factors to preparing calves for life after the ranch of origin and the first might not be what you expect. “The most important thing for cow-calf producers to do is to have an established mineral program for their cowherd. Copper and selenium significantly impact immune function so producers should supplement mineral accordingly, based on the deficiencies in their pastures,” said Bryant. Bryant said that mineral should be available at all times in order to create healthy liver stores, which build immune function in newborn calves. “Starting out on the right foot with a strong immune system is critical to long-term success in the feedyard,” he added. Caring for the cowherd doesn’t stop at the mineral tub, however. A solid cow vaccination program is also key to successful and healthy calves at the feedyard. “Ideally, producers should be vaccinating with a 4-way viral program for IBR, BVD, PI3 and BRSV and also include rotavirus, clostridium perfringens type C and salmonella, depending on the herd. Additionally, first-calf heifers
should receive a scour prevention booster four weeks prior to calving.” Bryant maintains that the choice of modified-live or killed virus is dependent largely on individual herd situation, but added that regardless of the program, it should be conducted annually to keep immune status of the herd high and the passage of maternal antibodies high. But what about the calves – the animals that are actually headed to the feedyard? Two key health management components can help producers, especially those who retain ownership, prepare their calves for optimum results during the finishing phase. Bryant maintains that as with the
72 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2018
cowherd, it’s vitally important to provide solid immune system function via viral protection for calves at both preweaning and weaning. At pre-weaning vaccination time, which should be done two to four weeks prior to weaning, Bryant advises that calves be treated with a 4-way viral, in addition to pasteurella, 7-way blackleg and possibly a haemophilus vaccination. Additionally, if calves aren’t already castrated and dehorned, it should be completed at that time. When weaning rolls around, calves should receive a modified-live 4-way booster and be dewormed. Bryant also advised running a coccidiostat through water or feed to help prevent coccidiosis, which is a significant immune system killer.

Want High-Performing Feedyard Cattle? Don’t Overlook the Basics. “The goal of weaning is to make the transition from pasture to bunkline as stress-free as possible. If calves are properly vaccinated and provided with good quality forages and fed high-energy, palatable concentrates during the 45- to 60-day backgrounding period, they can be better prepared for their transition to the feedyard.
Bryant heavily stressed the importance of thorough vaccination and nutrition programs that will best prepare calves for success at the feedyard. Furthermore, results from the K-State veterinary health survey indicated that immunization is the most important component of a healthy beef cattle herd to aid in the prevention of infectious diseases.
His advice aligned squarely with results from a Red Angus Association of America and Kansas State University survey of recommended practices made by cow-calf veterinarians, (Fike, G.D., J.C. Simroth, Du.U. Tomson, E.F. Schwandt, R. Spare and A.J. Tarpoff, 2017). Responding veterinarians indicated that management practices such as nutrition, fly control and weaning prior to shipping are all key to healthy feedyard cattle.
“To a producer, a great vaccination and weaning program may seem labor intensive and costly. However, if a calf becomes sick early in life it can develop compromised organ systems which can lead to poor performance or even death at the feedyard. If producers skip steps, then those calves are at risk for health problems due to immunity naturally weakening at 6 to 8 months of age, which coincides with the time most calves
74 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2018
arrive at the feedyard. That’s why using a modified-live viral program is advantageous for boosting the immune system before shipping calves.” When it comes down to it, Bryant attests that preparing calves for the feedyard is essentially about doing the right thing, repeatedly. And repetition can yield big rewards. “I can easily identify those producers who are committed to doing things right,” concluded Bryant. “They tend to receive better dividends from their cattle. Red Angus producers typically fall into this category of producers. As a veterinarian, I try to help producers understand that investing in that calf’s early life pays back dividends resulting in far fewer health problems at the feedyard level.” n

Heifer Development Begins at Birth by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine
Heifer development is an ongoing task for beef producers although sometimes the management associated with heifers can take a back-burner to other chores on the priority list. By keeping in mind the heifer’s health from birth, the nutrition she is provided, planning for proper timing of breed-up and selecting the best heifers in the herd, one can be certain that these young females will provide a solid foundation for the future.
From Birth to Birth During calving season it is easy to focus on just that – calving season. However, producers working toward goals of superb fertility in their females can begin working prior to the heifer’s birth to improve her chances of productivity.
Optimal health and nutrition in the early stages of cattle pregnancy are imperative for the calf’s health and their future. Mineral availability as well as adequate nutrition for the mother cow during early fetus development play a vital role in fetal health. It is also important that cows are properly vaccinated to ensure that they are equipped to carry out a pregnancy and to increase health of the herd so that the calf is introduced to a disease-free environment from the moment they hit the ground. Heifers are born with several hundred eggs which are all of the eggs they will ever have. While bulls produce sperm daily following puberty, a heifer’s eggs are all present at birth and begin to develop and grow upon her reaching puberty, the dawn of ovulation. Hence the need for vaccinations at branding. A calf that is able to gain good immunity from drinking her mother’s colostrum while also being properly vaccinated will have all of the right tools for a sound immune system thus laying the foundation for maternal strength in the future. Common vaccine protocol for calves includes vaccinations at branding, pre-weaning and weaning.
Proper Nutrition From day one calves need to be properly nourished in order to grow. Their nutrition requirements only continue as they draw nearer to breeding season. As a rule of thumb, heifers should weigh 65 to 70 percent of their projected mature weight by breeding. This target weight will ensure that their body condition score is high enough for eggs to properly develop and cycles to occur without flaw, thus providing an atmosphere advantageous to breeding.
According to Professor of Beef Cattle Reproductive Physiology Rick Funston, “Body condition score at calving also influences response to postpartum nutrient intake and breed back.” In a 1995 study conducted by the USDA’s Southern Regional Project Committee, researchers fed first-calf heifers differing in body conditions
78 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2018
from scores of 4 to 6. They fed the heifers similarly until calving and then split them into two groups to feed; one group’s goal was to gain 1 pound per day and the other 2 pounds per day. The percentage of BCS 6 cows in estrus during the first 20 days postpartum increased from 40 to 85 percent when fed to the higher rate of gain. The cows in BCS 4 only increased estrous response from 33 to 50 percent during the first 20 day postpartum when fed to gain at the higher rate. Cattle should have an optimum BCS of 5 to 6 at calving through breeding to assure optimal reproductive performance. Body condition score is generally a reflection of nutritional management, however, disease and parasitism can contribute to lower BCS even if apparent nutrient requirements are met. Obviously, working toward optimal BCS doesn't end at breeding.

Heifer Development Begins at Birth Keeping cows fed adequately through calving ensures the cow’s energy to produce milk to properly nourish the calf after calving and her recovery in order to breed up again.
ered by the Red Angus database and a GeneSeek reduced-panel DNA test, the RAAA has developed and released the Herd Navigator genetic panel to assist in heifer selection.
Mineral supplements play an important role for the progressive cattleman. Ensuring that mother cows are offered those elements not provided in their feed, whether feedstuffs or pasture grass, will allow them to gain better. It is not unusual for open cows to have been lacking a mineral necessary for proper cycling.
Red Navigator provides vital genetic information on tested Red Angus-influenced commercial females. Tested females receive genetic information in the form of individual percentile rank as compared to all other Red Navigator genotyped animals.
Numerous feed or mineral additives and pour-on applications are available to alleviate parasitism and should be considered when speaking with your veterinarian about vaccine protocol. On one thing all animal nutritionists can agree: immune suppressed cows will struggle to gain weight no matter the amount of feed they are being offered. Early Conception is Key During a presentation to The State of Beef conference, Funston noted, "Calving date for first-calf heifers may impact cow longevity and productivity. Calving late in year 1 increases the proportion of cows that either calve later next year or do not conceive.” He explained that the potential for longevity and a lifetime of productivity is highly reliant on the heifer’s first breeding season. “Research has indicated heifers having their first calf earlier in the calving season remained in the herd longer compared with heifers that calved later in the calving season.” In order to achieve an earlier breeding season, best management practices suggest turning bulls in with heifers a month earlier than with your cows. Also, requiring heifers to breed up in a limited amount of time, exposure during one cycle or about
Traits included in the Red Navigator are Red Angus’ HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices, all EPD traits and parent verification, given the potential sires have been DNA profiled.
45 days of keeping the bulls with the heifers, will compress the breeding season. Although some natural culling will take place as a result of heifers who don’t breed up during a tight breeding season, the most fertile heifers will rise to the forefront and allow for a lifetime of excellent breed backs. As a rule of thumb in the cattle industry, a 3-year-old cow has the hardest time breeding back. By allowing her adequate time before breeding season, as a result of her calving earlier, and properly maintaining her condition through birth of her first calf and into her second breeding season, she will have enough time to begin cycling again and increased odds of breed back. Keeping the Ones That Count Weighing personal bias, aesthetics, genetics and a variety of other considerations come into play when selecting the heifers of which your herd will eventually be comprised. Pow-

Commercial producers can apply the insight from the Red Navigator test to make selection decisions based on the traits that match their individual production scenarios. Then, they can market the remaining heifers as replacements or feeders depending on each heifer’s Red Navigator rankings. Cattlemen are able to advance the quality of their replacement females at a much faster rate than waiting to see how they perform once in production. Due to the DNA test being breed specific, the Red Navigator should only be used on females that are at least 75 percent Red Angus. The culmination of information delivered through the Red Navigator provides commercial producers with an unmatched tool for guiding their selection decisions. To order the Red Navigator tests, producers must complete and submit the DNA order form (Excel or PDF). Producers ordering the Red Navigator tests must own at least one registered Red Angus bull, and the bull(s) must be transferred to the ordering producer. ■

Member News In Memory
Eugene Reginald Hoff Born Jan. 1, 1949, Eugene Reginald Hoff vigorously fought his battle with cancer through August 10 in Scottsdale, Arizona, surrounded by his wife Lana and four daughters, Jamie, Lora, Kori and Kaycee. Reg, as he was known to everyone, was married to Lana for 49 years. Reg was born in Miles City, Montana, and raised in Baker, Montana, with his brothers Tom, Howard, Fred and Paul, and his sisters, Peg and Kay. Following graduation from Baker High, Reg and Lana moved to Billings where Jamie was born in 1970. He graduated from Montana State University with a degree in business agriculture in 1972 before moving to Philipsburg. Lora was born in 1973 while he was the Granite County Extension agent. From there, they moved to Forsyth and another little girl was born, Kori, in 1976, while Reg was the Rosebud County Extension agent. Kaycee was born in 1978 and, as Lana was giving birth, Reg handed her the paperwork to buy 80 cattle, thus the humble beginnings of the Hoff Ranch.

Reg and Lana took great pride in raising their four daughters into beautiful, hardworking, tough, no-excusemaking, successful women. Jamie, a Cal-State Northridge graduate, continues to climb the corporate ladder in Scottsdale after spending 22 years in Southern California. Lora, an MSU graduate, holds a Master’s Degree in educational leadership and has been married to Pat for 19 years. She has been a high school science teacher in Arizona since 1995. Kori, a 1998 South Dakota School of Mines graduate, wife of Brian for 13 years and mother of Brady, 11, and Trey, 5, is the head women’s basketball coach at Mesa Community College and a NJCAA National Championship Coach. Kaycee, a mortgage lender and 2001 graduate of MSU, is a mother of two, Parker, 9, and Kynzi, 6, and has been married to John since 2005. They currently reside in Bozeman. Reg began working at Peabody Energy for Big Sky Coal Co. in Colstrip in 1978 as the Reclamation Supervisor where he reclaimed surface-coal-mined lands during the day, and ranched at night and weekends, until retiring from Big Sky in 2015. Reg relied on his ranching experience and common sense to pioneer reclamation technology to restore surface-coal-mined lands to sustainable

land uses that endures today. His efforts were recognized by both the state of Montana and Federal Office of Surface Mining on multiple occasions, including several national awards of excellence in reclamation. While Reg was at the mine, Lana was running the ranch and farming while also raising the girls. They continued to grow their herd and acquire more land. Their cattle continue to be highly respected and sought after within the industry, so much so earning them the Red Angus Grid Master award in 2014. Through hard work, determination and the family’s “never give up” attitude – regardless of what challenge they faced – together they expanded to their current successful operation, which Lana will make sure forges on full steam ahead.
In between ranching, farming and raising a family, Reg always made time for fun too – including feeding his need for speed, from his days of racing cars as a youngster (and blaming it on his brothers) to his never-ending supply of $5 bills stashed in his visor on that boring straightaway stretch to and from Colstrip, to going to Las Vegas for the “Drive a NASCAR” experience for Father’s Day. Reg loved to laugh and make time for his family and friends. Even fulfilling a trip to Disneyland that he promised his grandkids and taking on the biggest coaster there – laughing and having more fun than they did. ■ Email your news items (sale reports, show reports, member news) to

to be included in the next American Red Angus Magazine. Sale reports will also be posted online at redangus.org/sales-and-events/red-angus-calendar/.
Reg was also actively involved in the local farming community, serving on the Hammond Valley Ditch Board, Weed Board, and Conservation District Board all while using his county Extension agent experience and knowledge to share with anyone who would listen and was interested in new ideas.
