Marketing Badges, Verification Help Win the Race If you are selling calves sired by Red Angus or your cowherd is Red Angussired, you have just earned a starting gate in the Kentucky Derby of marketing. Now, will you win, place or show? Red Angus has earned an excellent reputation for delivering multiple traits of economic importance to the beef industry. We all know about the tremendous attributes of the females and we know Red Angus feeder cattle deliver consistent efficiencies on the feeding side of the equation, but is that enough to garner the highest premiums? Early marketing results on Red Angus feeder cattle this summer have once again shown us that the more badges your cattle carry, the more dollars they return. Verification is key – very similar to a racehorse who has a solid reputation and well-bred pedigree will garner the most attention. Feeder cattle that have third-party verification have removed a substantial amount of risk from the profit equation. I encourage anyone with cattle for sale to take advantage of the plethora of value-added badges available. The RAAA alone has five programs to help gather up premiums for your cattle. FCCP “yellow tag” program, Allied Access “green tag” Program, Top Dollar Angus, Premium Red Baldy and the American Red programs are all thriving options that drive profit back to producers. Along with the previous mentioned programs, we can now add all the vaccination, weaning and hormone programs that all have shown positive returns back to the producer. I encourage each and every one of you to research these programs and find the badges that work for your ranch and start dressing up these feeder cattle. Marketing of feeder cattle has taken a large shift towards verification and it appears that if we do not use this to our advantage, we may be that racehorse trotting across the finish line out of the money. Verification removes risk on both sides of the equation bringing more buyers to the table who are willing to pay more for a high-quality product that also removes risks on their end. Harold Bertz, director of commercial Marketing, and his team are very good at helping each rancher find and implement the program(s) that fit their individual ranch. Health, Genetics are Foundation of Successful Calf Marketing Cattle ranchers large and small are beginning to understand what it takes to be more successful at marketing. That is good news, because for too many years – decades actually – many producers were last-minute calf sellers. They did little advance preparation and planning. They simply gathered and sold their calves or yearlings and hoped for the best. However, times are changing. Today’s cattle market participants pay attention to much more than weight, hide color and shrink. Premium-priced feeder calves sold this summer were marketed with documented credentials that included their 1) health background, including previous vaccination treatments, 2) genetic merit and 3) other program qualifications, such as Natural, GAP, C.A.R.E. or NHTC. It is true that marketing cattle requires more work, documentation and cost versus simply selling calves on a given day in the fall. But the rewards are typically more than enough to offset the extra effort and expense. Feeder calves of the same weight and location can experience selling price differentials up to $15 to $25 per cwt, which translates to approximately $100 to $150 per head.

CattleFax recently documented that high-financial return producers are more likely to wean their calves for at least 45 days (see accompanying table), thereby staying in tune with buyer demands. In contrast, lowreturn producers shipped their calves straight off the cow more often, or when they did wean, the tendency was to do so for a shorter period of time. Here are two important takeaways from this difference in weaning practices. First, high-return producers have more knowledge about what the market wants. Secondly, they are more likely to follow what they know and take specific action, because doing so positively impacts their bottom line. Low-return producers do not align themselves with market desires as frequently, which is part of why they stay on the lower end for profit.

Top cow-calf producers who have become good at marketing realize it is important to listen to what the marketplace is saying. And what the market is saying, first and foremost, is that it wants weaned calves that have a complete vaccination program behind them. Buying only calves weaned 45 to 60 days is one of the most important ways backgrounders and feedlots manage health risk.

Association Commentary After health and weaning, breed and genetics are next in line for importance to buyers. Some breeds are more demanded than others. Producers that want to market calves in the top tier of available prices will want to build their herds and calf crops around breeds in high demand. Fortunately, Red Angus is among the top few breeds in overall desirability. Red Angus and Red Anguscross calves regularly sell at or near the top of the market in most geographies. This is particularly true for heifers and quite often for the steers as well. Specific genetics within the breed(s) of choice is also critical and is rising to the surface as something buyers want more information about before they bid on a group of calves or yearlings. Feedlots prefer cattle that gain weight rapidly and efficiently, reach acceptably heavy weights when finished, and then hang up a high percentage of
Prime and Choice quality grades without too many yield grade 4’s (overfat carcasses). Red Angus EPDs are great selection tools that are proven to add performance and carcass traits where it is needed (see table below from the RAFI- and JRAsponsored LiveWiRED Project). Cattle buyers are becoming more discriminating all the time, and producers who desire to top the market can benefit from aligning their health and genetic programs with these demands. ■

The New Normal? To say 2020 has been unprecedented is an understatement. We’re all looking at a new normal, with much uncertainty as to how long it will last or if we will ever fully return to the old normal. For me, making the conscious choice to focus on the positives and not linger too long on the negatives has been crucial during this time. Let’s take a look at a couple positives to focus on at this time. 1. Calf prices, given the situation Obviously, there has been much uncertainty and concern from producers with calves to market. In early summer sales, the offerings were slim compared to previous years as many producers have opted to hold their calves back, hoping things would improve. As our marketing team has watched these sales, we’ve been weary but also pleasantly surprised with the results we’ve seen. In our observations, calf prices have been on par or slightly higher than last year. There is a clear premium for cattle that are weaned or enrolled in an added-value program such as the Feeder Calf Certification Program. Yearlings have sold extremely well in the early summer sales. If you have yet to sell your calves, know that the Red Angus team is rooting for you and we will do all we can to ensure you achieve success when marketing your Red Angus calves.
2. Embracing technology Part of the new normal has been learning to do some of our business virtually. We saw many spring bull sales embracing online bidding for the first time and some were forced to move to an ‘online only’ format. Many summer beef conferences were moved to a virtual format, and we will also be meeting virtually for the 2020 National Red Angus Convention. While we’d prefer to see each other face to face, virtual meetings do decrease travel time and cost, while allowing participants more flexibility to engage while also fulfilling responsibilities at home. Another positive development from the increased use of technology for learning is the addition of the Learn From the Best - Seedstock Series that will educate up-andcoming producers through a series of virtual meetings. Risk Reduction Will Dominate Cattle Markets in 2020 and Beyond by Jared Wareham, Top Dollar Angus General Manager As I am writing this article, the annual fiveday-long Superior Livestock “Week in the Rockies” sale is beginning to wind down. Throughout the week, I observed close to 190,000 head that were traded across the country. There are some valuable insights that have surfaced and are worth your consideration. This year, more than any in recent memory, will require an aggressive marketing strategy for the remaining 2019 yearlings and the “wall” of oncoming 2020 calves. A large national calf crop combined with substantial economic uncertainty, a feeding segment that has suffered substantial losses, and the continued COVID-19 pandemic has created an environment brimming with risk. Recognizing the critical areas of enhanced marketability can help you offer true “lowrisk, high-value cattle,” which is absolutely essential in this environment. It was crystal clear that unweaned calves will be worth even less than they have in years past. They simply represent too much risk, particularly with the “never-ever” cattle with Verified Natural programming. The losses that can be incurred when a sickness outbreak occurs in any group of cattle is substantial. However, losses in Natural cattle can be devastating. Many times, pens of Natural cattle that have broken with sickness require mass treatment, which automatically disqualifies them for any Natural-fed-cattle program premiums they once qualified for. Every cattle feeder I speak with has made a commitment to paying premiums only for

$ ® Natural cattle that have been weaned a minimum of 45 days – preferably longer. Program cattle, in general, will see greater demand. In today’s market, cattle verified for NHTC, Natural and GAP (Global Animal Partnership) as a single package are in high demand. Supplies of GAP cattle appear to be tight everywhere, creating a robust demand for this three-way combo by feedyards of all sizes. NHTC alone has begun to see some slippage in demand. Many feeders would just as soon feed cattle that also carry the additional Natural verification because of the greater premiums for Verified Natural finished cattle. Non-third-party-verified programs, like Natural affidavits, have little to no value in the majority of regions across the country as the fed cattle marketing options for those cattle continue to shrink. Next, if you’re not going to use implants or growth promotants (NHTC), cattle absolutely need to have a lot of genetic performance bred in. Dry matter conversion and
cost of gain can be profit killers when feeding pens of NHTC cattle that don’t perform. Therefore, high-performance genetics will demand a premium. Precision buying through documented genetic value has emerged as a critically important tool to help identify the legitimately documented top performers. For this reason, knowing more about groups of feeder cattle throughout the procurement process with genetic verification is becoming more valuable. Price spreads between the pure commodity cattle and those with premium health, genetics, programming and pre-conditioning are on pace to be consistently wider than a year ago. Cattle that represent more potential reward with less risk will demand the highest level of interest from buyers. Testing, Management Reduce Loss to Brisket Disease by Trinity Lewis for Red Angus Magazine
In 1913, the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association initiated the first research into a disease that was causing cattle to display symptoms of weakness, bulging of eyes, heavy breathing, swelling in the brisket and eventually death. At that time, cattle had begun to outpace the sheep population in the high country of Colorado and the cattlemen were surprised to find otherwise healthy cattle, dead on the lush mountain pastures. The cause of the intermittent deaths was determined to be Brisket Disease, also referred to as High Mountain Disease (HMD), Dropsy and Big Brisket. “Brisket Disease results in death due to congestive right-heart failure, secondary to an increase in blood flow resistance in the lungs. This resistance is a result of chronic (most commonly but not a rule) low-oxygen tension experienced at a high altitude,” explained Timothy Holt, Colorado State University DVM and assistant professor of veterinary medicine and biomedical science. Put simply, low oxygen levels at higher elevations challenge the lungs and cause artery walls to thicken. This produces pulmonary hypertension making it difficult for the animal’s heart to pump blood into the lungs. The right ventricle of the heart goes into overdrive in its effort to pump blood through the restricted arteries. It eventually enlarges and loses its ability to contract, becoming very inefficient. If some type of therapy is not initiated quickly, the heart will go into congestive right-heart failure and the animal will die. Often the pressure within the heart and pulmonary artery is so high that the animal can experience an aneurysm and die very quickly. Affected Animals Cattle in areas above 6,000 feet in elevation are most at risk for Brisket Disease. Inci-

dence is especially high when producers turn their low country cattle out into mountain pasture for the summer. An upcoming concern now is that Brisket Disease is being seen in low elevation feed yards. Holt explained this isn’t necessarily High Mountain Disease. “When people refer to Brisket Disease, most commonly they are referencing Brisket Disease with elevation causing the hypoxia (low-oxygen tension) and the cascade of events leading to heart failure. With this in mind, we talk about them as hypoxia being the cause behind it. “At that point, we look at cattle in feedlots that are large and fat and growing rapidly. In essence, what we have created is obese cattle. They, in some way, are virtually out-
growing their cardiac and pulmonary systems.” Holt went on to explain that cattle were built to sustain a certain size and weight. When cattle are forced to grow and become virtually obese, their heart and lungs are no longer able to keep up with the body mass and the obesity makes for reduced lung size and efficiency. This in turn leads to fat being deposited within the lungs as well as around the heart making the cattle less efficient and results in starting a hypoxic state – the same cascade we see in high elevation. “In summary,” Holt concluded, “yes, we see Brisket Disease in lower elevations, and it is essentially the same, but the insti-
Testing, Management Reduce Loss to Brisket Disease gating factor is not elevation but possibly related to diets and genetics.” There is also research investigating if this lower elevation cardiac death may be associated with biventricular failure instead of just right heart failure as described in High Mountain Disease. Prevention Doug Carlson, of Sand Mountain Cattle Co., ranches north of Steamboat Springs in Clark, Colorado. Clark sits at 7,200-feet elevation while the ranch’s elevation ranges from 7,300 to 8,600 feet, a perfect storm for Brisket Disease. “We're primarily a commercial cow-calf operation though we usually run some outside yearling steers as well,” Carlson explained. “I first noticed symptoms of Brisket Disease at least 20 years ago when we bought some bred cows from the Midwest. A calf developed it during the summer and the cow later the following winter.”

Carlson had a neighbor who, at that time, had been getting information from the nearby Dr. Holt, so Carlson began following Holt’s research and attended his presentation which Carlson described as “very informative.” After that, Carlson began testing the pulmonary arterial pressure in his bulls. “I was able to weed out one high-PAP-score bull I had bought in Nebraska.” That first testing would change the trajectory for their genetic decisions moving forward. Even with taking extra precautions, Carlson still has incidence. “We seem to get one calf affected per year, usually when they are yearlings. However, we're not sure of the underlying conditions that led to the swelling and edemas. Was it pneumonia early in its life or something else? Regardless, we do cull the dam and go back through our records to see if that maternal bloodline has had issues before.” PAP Testing Pulmonary Arterial Pressure is a measure-

The test includes inserting a large-diameter needle into the animal's jugular vein, and then feeding a catheter through the right atrium and right ventricle into the pulmonary artery. A pressure transducer attached to the catheter measures the pulmonary arterial pressure.

Testing, Management Reduce Loss to Brisket Disease PAP tests consider the mean pressure – the PAP – and systolic and diastolic pressure. By evaluating all three pressures, the veterinarian can determine what the PAP measurement is as well as how much damage has already taken place – or the overall health of the cardio-pulmonary system. An ideal PAP score is less than 41 mmHg – 42-46 mmHG is moderate to high risk, and above 47 indicates high risk. Holt outlined three rules to follow regarding PAP Testing: 1. The higher the altitude, the more accurate and reliable test results will be. Any PAP measurement taken below 5,000 feet should be utilized only as a screening tool to eliminate extremely susceptible animals before they are taken to altitude rather than for genetic selection. Cattle tested at elevations of less than 5,000 feet should always be retested at elevation if they are intended for breeding purposes. 2. Cold environmental temperature can cause pulmonary hypertension. Temperatures less than -10 degrees Fahrenheit have been shown to increase PAP by 25-55%.

Brisket Disease – characterized by an enlarged brisket – can affect animals at high altitude or feedlot cattle that have outgrown their cardiac and pulmonary systems.
3. Testing cattle less than a year of age should be done only as a screening tool to eliminate extremely susceptible animals. PAP measurements in young cattle are not always predictive of PAP measurements as adults. It is advisable to retest these cattle at high altitude after 12 months of age. This is especially important for cattle that will be used as breeding stock. According to Carlson, the work conducted and currently in process by Holt has made
all the difference. “We certainly appreciate the work being done by Dr. Holt and others, as well as the purebred breeders doing PAP scores.” Genetic Testing According to Holt, the issue relating to Brisket Disease which seems to confuse producers the most is the cause of the disease. “There is not one cause for Brisket Disease. There is not one gene that makes an animal get the disease or prevents one from

As of now, we have found many genes contributing to this cascade and it is doubtful we will ever identify one gene causing the problem. Brisket Disease is referred to as a polygenic disease syndrome or a disease with multiple genes involved in the disease process. Although no DNA test currently exists to mark cattle who will perform poorly in high altitudes, Colorado State University (Enns, Thomas) is currently conducting DNA analysis. Yet, Holt believes discovering a genetic marker is a long shot. “A DNA solution, even though receiving lots of research and attention, may

This, coupled with the amount of loss due to Brisket Disease, reveals the economic impact of the disease. RAAA Year in Review Resilient During Trying Times by Harold Bertz, Director of Commercial Marketing
The 2019-2020 fiscal year for the Red Angus Association of America encompassed one of the most unique periods in the history of the United States. The beef industry endured a pandemic, riots, killer hornets and food shortages along with the ever-present challenges of weather and markets. Despite the chaos, RAAA posted another solid year. Breeders were able to continue marketing seedstock and commercial ranchers were able to incorporate top genetics into their herds and access industry-leading marketing programs. Membership in the RAAA grew 6% to 2,755 members while the Junior Red Angus Association posted 4% growth to record 1,101 members. Increased membership indicates the growing popularity of Red Angus cattle, their steadfast data and valuable market share. Our junior program continues to be vibrant in its leadership opportunities, programs and educational reach. The Feeder Calf Certification Program and Allied Access again set a record for the largest year in the program’s history with 214,200 enrollments. Commercial cattlemen continue to find the FCCP and AA programs valuable in helping them differentiate their cattle in a very noisy marketplace. The FCCP turns 25 this year. Congratulations to our breeders and commercial cattlemen for supporting an industry-leading program that continues to shatter records 25 years later.

A Look at the Updated GridMaster Selection Index by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement
As discussed, several months ago RAAA has been going through the process of updating and improving the selection index tools that we offer. Over the next couple of months, we will be including articles that examine these updates in-depth. The goal is to provide these educational updates to inform all users of these tools and provide insight as to how these tools work. For the first part of this series lets take a look at the RAAA terminal index known as GridMaster. The GridMaster selection index looks to identify differences in the profitability of non-replacement animals through the feedlot and slaughter portion of the production cycle. For commercial cattle producers, this group of animals is important because it represents the largest source of income each year. Therefore, RAAA provides a tool to help commercial cattlemen identify sires that will be more profitable during that stage of production. The EPDs that RAAA currently publishes relating to this phase of production include: ADG, DMI, MARB, YG, CW, REA and BF. These traits help to predict differences in performance due to these important genetic factors. Within this selection index, each of these factors are weighted based on their contribution to the overall post-weaning profitability. Due to this index looking strictly at terminal performance, it does not include traits such as fertility, longevity or calving ease into the calculation of the resulting index value. This is important to keep in mind because if replacements are going to be retained in the herd, GridMaster will not be the most effective selection tool. When indexes are being developed, prices for different portions of the economic model must be established. For these indexes, data was collected from several reputable sources using a five-year rolling averages of prices. tant for the calculation include premiums and discounts for different carcass grades, ration costs, discounts for heavy carcasses and prices for different weights of cattle. The input assumptions for some of the more influential factors included in the terminal index are included in the table above. The prices above are then entered into economic models that determine the relative contributions for each of the traits in the resulting indexes. One way to look at the results of the general weighting that this index will put on different traits is through the pie chart on page 46. This chart represents the relative emphasis that the index would put on the different traits included in the index. As you can see, the bigger drivers of the resulting index values include growth traits and marbling. Although the index has a lot of positive influence on growth, this index also has checks and balances built in.
A Look at the Updated GridMaster Selection Index Dry Matter Intake is also included in the index to select for cattle that are more feed efficient. Another way to examine these indexes is to look at a graph that is known as a “response to selection” graph. This graph provides an estimate of the change of the genetic merit within a herd that makes selection decisions for all traits assuming they solely selected on the GridMaster index.

This graph shows what the expected change in the EPD profiles would be if selection was carried out using only the GridMaster Index. The graph shows that selection on this index will result in a more favorable combination of terminal traits. Selection on this index will result in higher weights and gain, higher marbling and higher ribeye area. Additionally, only minor increases of DMI and BF are expected when selection on this index is used. These changes in traits will lead to more efficient animals that excel in post-weaning performance. ■

2020-2021 JRA Board of Directors The Junior Red Angus Association of America focuses on equipping and preparing all JRA stakeholders to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for Red Angus, the beef industry and agriculture. The JRA is an affiliate of the Red Angus Association of America and provides leadership and learning opportunities for Red Angus enthusiasts under the age of 21 who have the desire and passion to be involved in the breed. Six junior board members develop programming across five strategic focus areas to improve and maximize the membership experience. 1. State Leadership Relations – Establishing communication with state advisors, junior presidents and non-titled key representatives. 2. Fund Development – Generating funding to support junior opportunities and sponsorships. 3. External Partner Development – Building relationships with industry partners, other breed associations and other stakeholders. 4. Member Engagement – Improving strategies for increasing JRA opportunity, awareness, participation and input. 5. Commercial Member Development – Building relationships with commercial producers and utilize opportunities for new memberships. Andrea Rutledge is a 19-year-old junior at Montana State University, pursuing a degree in animal science – livestock management. She is the daughter of Kelly and Kristie Rutledge and the fifth generation raising cattle and small grains on their centennial operation in Big Sandy, Montana. In high school she was active in 4-H and FFA, serving as a state officer for both. An56 Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2020
drea is passionate about agriculture and Red Angus. She looks forward to connecting with members and producers, while encouraging youth to pursue a path of leadership. Elizabeth McGibbon of Green Valley, Arizona, is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The daughter of Micaela and Andrew McGibbon and a fifth-generation southern Arizona rancher, she raises registered and commercial Red Angus. Izzy is an animal science major with minors in Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars and Engler Entrepreneurship. She is a true leader of the beef industry and hopes to continue to promote the many benefits of Red Angus. She looks forward to serving the industry well into the future. Mia Gibson is the 18year-old daughter of Lin and Jim Gibson from Elgin, Iowa, and a freshman at Des Moines Area Community College majoring in agribusiness. In high school she was very involved in her FFA chapter, district and state, 4-H, county beef association, National Honor Society and Iowa Junior Red Angus Association. Mia is passionate about Red Angus and agriculture and wants to increase her advocacy while on the board to encourage juniors to become more knowledgeable and gain leadership skills. Peyton Nagel is the 20year-old son of Mark and Kris Nagel from Alhambra, Illinois. He is a junior at Kansas State University studying animal science with a pre-vet option and is involved with
the pre-veterinary and the Veterinary Voyagers clubs. In high school he was in FFA, where he served as chapter secretary and received multiple awards including his state degree. In 4-H, he was an officer for two years. Peyton is involved in growing his family operation and wishes to apply his experience to grow JRA, develop friendships and build relationships in the industry. Isaac Berg from Pipestone, Minnesota, is the son of Philip and Laurel Berg. He is a freshman at South Dakota State University this fall majoring in animal science, especially genetics. Isaac has been active in 4-H, FFA and the Minnesota Junior Red Angus Association. He was president of his FFA chapter and vice president of his 4-H club. Isaac is heavily involved in improving and managing his family’s purebred Red Angus herd. Fun fact: Isaac attended six Round-Up events starting at the age of 11 years. Tiffany Watkins is the 18-year-old daughter of Andy and Sandy Watkins, from Dade City, Florida. Tiffany is studying livestock production at Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College in Georgia. In high school, she was involved in FFA and 4-H, holding many officer positions, as well as her state junior cattlemen’s association where she held a board position. Tiffany has been raising Red Angus for three years and is very passionate about the breed. She looks forward to promoting Red Angus all around the country, especially in the Southeast. ■

Dr. David “Doc” Hehli Dr. David “Doc” Lavern Hehli, 77, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2020, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Doc was born Jan. 9, 1943, to Wilhelmina (Billie) and Lavern (Bud) Hehli in Eau Claire. He graduated from Regis High School in 1960 and married his high school sweetheart Mary (McCarthy) on June 2, 1962. Together they had four children. Upon graduation from Marquette Dental School, Doc started practicing dentistry in Mondovi, Wisconsin, in 1968. He was a trailblazer and visionary in the dental profession starting Midwest Dental and eventually growing his Mondovi practice to several dental offices throughout the state of Wisconsin. To those who knew him, Doc didn’t do anything on a small scale. He was passionate about helping people and working hard to achieve success and full potential. Besides dentistry, his other love was farming and over the years he cherished the opportunity to expand and improve farming. He became owner of Value Implement and never really retired as he spent a number of his later years growing his herd of Red Angus into grand champions under the Damar Farms name. Doc’s interest and success in dentistry and farming paled in comparison to the deep and prideful love he had for his own family. He is survived by his four children, Pete (Lynlee) Hehli, Todd (Tammie) Hehli, Angie (Joe) Eisenhuth and Beth (Toby) Salonek. Grandchil-
dren: Marissa Price, Karley (BJ) Coleman, Carson, Faye, Logan and Griffin Hehli. Emily (Michael) Benyaich, Steven Hehli, Lindsey (Colin) Peterson, Amanda, Avery and Cali Eisenhuth. Jacob, Max and Ben Salonek; and three great-grandchildren: Walker and Letty Peterson and Trey Coleman. Sister Anne Hehli Gust, sister-in-law Pat Bunk; brothers-in-law Jon (Joan) McCarthy, Mike McCarthy; cousin Pat Bennett and many nieces and nephews. Doc was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents Billie and Bud Hehli, aunts Jan (Emmet) Bennett and Helen (Howard) Drake, brother-in-law Dennis Bunk, in-laws John J. and Irene McCarthy, sister-in-law Michele McCarthy and infant brother Richard. A private funeral service was held July 25 with a Celebration of Life to be determined at a later date due to the current pandemic. ■
