Board Commentary by Connie Mushrush, Region B Director
Women in Agriculture RAAA has a long history of accepting all capable leaders regardless of their gender, age or otherwise. At its inception in 1954, four women were just as involved in the organization of RAAA as the five men. Since my involvement with RAAA, I have never witnessed a female being passed over for any position because of gender. Many are capable, smart, qualified women that have been put into leadership positions because they were the best choice. In addition to those who have served in leadership roles, I want to highlight others that impact agriculture and the Red Angus breed. Jean Croissant is integral to their operation. Some years ago, eastern Colorado was having a terrible winter and they were trying to survive and save calves. Husband Larry was exhausted, disheveled and feeling guilty for leaving the ranch for a meeting. However, he and Jean knew how important it was to participate in the business of the RAAA. While he was volunteering his time, Jean was home in miserable weather keeping the ranch together. Teresa Andras, a Christian, nurse and supportive wife, doesn’t do the day-today ranch work, but rather supports the family with a second income and by being present. While husband Steve was president of the RAAA, they included their son Will and his young family at convention, all staying in one room. They fully understand the importance of training up the next generation. During the demanding and stressful convention, Teresa hustled grandkids around and kept everyone busy to support her husband while he did his association obligations during a very challenging week.
Lois Bieber only served on one committee for RAAA and has always attended convention to support her husband Ron, and later son Craig. Lois used the Red Angus convention as an opportunity to take a vacation. At home she kept ranch records, organized sales and supported their business any way she could. When the time was right, her and Ron selflessly handed the management of Bieber Red Angus on to the next generation. When Joe finished his presidency, she confided that as the wife of a past president, I am obligated to pray for the RAAA daily. To this day, I do so. Summer Orton, mother of five schoolaged children and wife to Dan, juggles school activities and her many interests, plus is very hands-on in their ranching operation. She is also the ranch’s record keeper. Two years ago terrible floods were devastating Nebraska and their ranch, and I was humbled at her positive attitude, visionary goals and continued trust in our Lord. One final woman was a quiet, shy lady who wanted no recognition. My motherin-law Oma Lou spent years growing and nurturing their fledging herd of crossbred cattle that would later become the foundation for our registered herd. While Joe was in college and her husband Bob was working his ‘town job,’ she broke ice, fed cattle, fixed fence and baled hay. She did all of this while managing to have a hot meal on the table every day at 12:10 so that her and Bob could eat lunch together. As we applaud women in agriculture, look within your own families, friends and neighbors and celebrate those unsung women heroes who are quietly contributing to the Red Angus breed and agriculture! ■

10 Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2020
Association Commentary by Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer
Red Angus Foundation Sponsors Beef-on-Dairy Project There’s a genetic revolution taking place in the dairy industry. Increased use of sexed semen on top-producing dairy cows is creating ample numbers of replacement heifers without the need to breed mediocre or lower end cows to dairy bulls. As a result, many dairies are now utilizing beef semen to produce growthier, more marketable calves that are 50% beef and 50% dairy. A typical scenario is to use female-sexed semen on onethird to half of the best cows, and beef semen on everything else. This approach virtually eliminates all lowvalue dairy steers. With over 9.3 million dairy cows in the U.S., coupled with active use of artificial insemination, “beef on dairy” has become big business. A rough estimate would be that 7 to 8 million straws of beef semen are now being used by the dairy industry annually, with additional growth expected in the years ahead. Even though this semen sells for less per unit than conventional beef semen, it has become a market too big to ignore. That’s why the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. is sponsoring a research project in central-California to demonstrate that Red Angus genetics can be used successfully to produce fast-growing beef-dairycross calves that will excel in the feedlot and hang up valuable carcasses at harvest. About the Project Red Angus has not been extensively utilized in beef-on-dairy applications, though we are aware of some commercial use in the Texas Panhan-
dle and New Mexico region involving both Holstein and Jersey cows. The Visalia California project, funded in part by RAFI, was initiated in the fall of 2019. More than 50 head of Red Angus-sired calves were born to Holstein dams in July and August this year and wear the yellow FCCP tag. Calves will be grown to around 350 pounds on-site at the calf-growing facility on the dairy of origin before being moved to a small feedlot, also located in central-California. Eventually, both steers and heifers will be fed out to 1,300 to 1,400 pounds and harvested. Planned data collection includes actual live gains and feed conversion rates on a group basis, along with individual DNA and carcass results. Many of the project calves are mostly or entirely black-hided since black is dominant to red. However, a few red calves were produced, due to some of the cows being red-carrier Holsteins. White on the head, feet, flank and belly also showed up on some calves which is normal for beefdairy-cross animals given their blackand-white-spotted dams. Some believe Red Angus does a better job than other breeds in getting rid of the white and producing more solid-colored calves. More information will be provided on this project as the calves grow and progress during the months ahead. Thanks to RAFI for helping get this important research off the ground and we look forward to its results! ■

2020 – What a year it has been! The twists, turns and bumps along the way seemed to keep on coming. Not very many things were certain this year, but one thing that stayed the same was the need for agricultural producers. Everyone needs to eat and the process of producing that food and other necessary resources was deemed essential. The focus of what is truly needed during these crazy times was brought back to agriculture. As producers we understand uncertainty and adapting to different challenges in order to succeed and overcome. We understand that things change, and we must keep moving forward. So, while we are closing up the year of 2020 and planning for the year 2021, what will you be doing to grow and adapt? What goals do you have for this next year? What programs will you get more involved in to better your operation? The Red Angus Association of America has an extensive portfolio of value-added programs that can help you and your bull buyers take a step forward into 2021.

Using Selection Indexes for Bull-Purchasing Decisions by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement
The spring bull sale season is just around the corner and there will be many that go out and identify their next exciting young herd sire this spring. With this important decision, time is spent looking through sale catalogs of bulls available for purchase.
process of which bull to purchase. Take for example two bulls that have the following ProS index values.
Different Red Angus breeders include different information in their catalogs to help their customers make more-informed purchasing decisions. However, it is often still complicated to determine what a commercial cattleman should be willing to invest on each of these potential herd sires.
We can see from this example that there is a difference in ProS index values of $15. So, between these two bulls, we would expect that each calf born out of Bull B should be $15 dollars more valuable than that of Bull A. While that is important information, it doesn’t really help us determine an appropriate purchase price difference.
While the method proposed here will not tell you the exact amount to spend, it can serve as a baseline metric for potential differences in purchase price. In November, the RAAA released three new economic selection indexes. Each of these indexes are designed to predict economic differences of each animal’s EPD profile in different aspects of the beef supply chain. For this example, let’s use the Profitability and Sustainability (ProS) index. This index covers all traits from conception to harvest, so improvement in this index will have a positive economic benefit across the entire beef industry.
To do this, we could assume that each of these bulls is going to sire 100 progeny in our herd. We would take the $15 difference in ProS and multiply this by 100 which gives us a value of $1,500. This means you could pay up to $1,500 more for Bull B than Bull A and the additional purchase value would make sense.
Bull A B
For all of the updated indexes the units that are used are $ per calf born. This is an important feature of the updated indexes because it can help in the decision-making 18 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2020
ProS Index 115 130
While the indexes are very valuable tools for summarizing genetic profiles, it is still important to study individual EPDs. For example, Bull B in this scenario may have a poor Calving Ease Direct EPD. If you are looking to use this bull on heifers, then we may not want to consider him. In addition, there are additional phenotypic factors that should be considered when making bull selection decisions. An example of this may be overall structural soundness or maybe foot structure. These factors are not directly included in the index calculations, so variations in the differences based on the index should be made based on the economic importance of that trait to your operation. Using the economic selection indexes to help in making bull purchasing decisions can serve as a basis to value different potential bulls in your operation. ■

Member Services Bulletin 4. Wait for the Herd Inventory Report Before Moving Calving Seasons Most importantly, if you plan to move a heifer to a
different calving season than designated by her
birth date, wait to move her until she is listed on
your Herd Inventory report. This allows for the
most accurate observation on heifers. Providing a

A Decade Old, RAFI Envisions an Impactful Future by Tracey Koester, RAAA Editorial Coordinator
Philosopher and teacher Confucius said, “If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of 10 years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people.” As we reflect back 10 years to the organization of the Red Angus Foundation, Inc., the initial planted seed has grown into a tree. Now the challenge to teach our people is at hand with the mission of RAFI to investment in leadership development, scientific research and educational opportunities. In 2010, the Red Angus Association of America began the reorganization of its foundation, which had gone dormant over the years. Forrest Dunning, RAAA director and finance expert, was tasked with setting up the three areas of RAFI – Sal Forbes Research and Development, General Fund and Junior Red Angus. Esther Fischer of Harlowton, Montana, served on the inaugural RAFI board of directors in the president’s seat along with directors Larry Daniels of Georgia, Judy Kay Ferguson of Texas, Ryan Ludvigson of Montana, John Montgomery of Alabama, Raymond Prescott of South Carolina, Steve Newberry of Montana, and RAAA Executive Secretary Greg Comstock. “There was a foundation originally, but it had turned dormant and no one knew anything about it,” recalled Fischer. “It hadn’t been designated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and we had to jump through hoops to get incorporated.” The fundraising started small with the commission of the Tim Cox painting, “Where Change Comes Slowly” and the auction of limited-edition prints at the 2010 National Red Angus Convention in Springfield, Missouri. In 2012 at the convention in Reno, Nevada, RAFI hosted its first annual dinner and debuted the 12’x12’ 96-page coffee table photo book, “Red Angus Trails.” Special auction items included leather-and-hairon-hide custom-covered books and a cus-
tom-made mesquite-and-inlaid-turquoise coffee table. Then in 2013, RAFI hosted its first large fundraiser, gathering nearly $60,000 through raffle tickets for the “6 for 60” heifer project, where six Red Angus breeders donated a heifer and the winning raffle ticket holder, Wildcat Creek Ranch of Newton, Kansas, won all six heifers. Fischer said, “We finally had built up enough reserves and could start to fund projects.” Those initial projects included a test herd in Wyoming and three university research projects. “RAFI is important for the future of the Red Angus,” she said. “The only way we are going to move the breed forward is with research and development and a commitment to our juniors. If we don’t continue to support RAFI through fundraisers and contributions, we aren’t going to have those resources.” Fischer reminded that all donations – large and small – add up. Annually, RAFI’s fundraiser includes “Pick of the Herd” donated by generous Red Angus breeders. Additional donated items are auctioned off including historical breed memorabilia, artwork, rifles and unique ranch tours and hunting trips. “My dream is for RAFI to be self-sustainable with enough funds in our account that we could pick and choose the research projects that will help Red Angus become even more prevalent in the beef industry,” she said. “It’s like a child,” concluded Fischer. “RAFI needs to be nurtured, nurtured, nurtured. It is still in its infancy because it hasn’t blossomed yet and we need to continue to help it grow.”

Winter Season Allows Time to Analyze Herd Performance by Kacey Jacobson, Top Dollar Angus Field Representative
As winter approaches, fall projects have been checked off the list left and right for cattle producers. The cows are home, calves are weaned and the hay is in the yard. With the steers on feed and the replacement heifers settling in their new pen, we get to see just how well the cows did for the year. The favorite cows that always have a scale topper, once again, didn’t disappoint, and some of those first-calf heifers really out-did themselves. However, other females’ calves failed to weigh up like we had hoped.
As cattle producers, it’s important to take time to make written notes on the performance of your cows, especially before bull sale season. Culling cows that barely make the cut each year and replacing them with a genetically stronger replacement heifer can result in more efficient genetic improvement and increased herd productivity. Oftentimes, we take for granted the amount of free information our cattle put right in front of us that can give us the data we need to make informed culling decisions.
The same can be said for your bull battery. While many commercial producers run in multiple sire groups, there can be opportunities to determine how certain sire groups are performing and make adjusted breeding decisions – or even culling decisions if the need arises. Don’t forget the ability to look up current EPDs on those bulls as well. Take the time to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of not only the phenotype of your bulls, but also their genetic profiles.

Taking Aim at a Moving Target You have paid for that information, so why not continue to utilize it? As you sit down this winter and enjoy a bit slower time, we encourage ranchers large and small to take a few hours and analyze their cow and bull records. Determine if those marginal bulls and females have earned their place on the ranch, or if they need to head down the road. When evaluating herds for potential qualification into the Top Dollar Angus program, we often see lower EPD bulls that fall well below the rest of the bull battery. For example, suppose eight bulls in a 10-bull battery average in the top 20% for Marbling EPD, while the remaining two bulls rank in the bottom 30% of the breed. Eliminating such sires, and replacing them with better genetics, can significantly improve

‘The Prairie Crocus’ Blooms in all Seasons by Tracey Koester, Red Angus Magazine Editorial Coordinator
Perched on a snowy hill above their working corrals, Richelle Barrett peeled through the layers of her winter clothes to find her cell phone. With numb, gloveless fingers, she snapped a quick picture of the weaning activity below as the chorus of cows and calves blended into the shipping song that the Montana ranch family knows as payday. She quickly opened the Notes app on her phone and tapped out her ideas so she didn’t forget. Later that night, back in the warmth of the house, she completed the blog and posted it to her Facebook page. Her talent of capturing the emotions of day-to-day ranch life and voicing the unspoken words of the heart resounds with ranchers, especially women.

Her blogs are brief – generally only a few paragraphs a day. Her following, however, is extensive as evidenced by her fans’ engagement. Some posts have been shared more than 270 times because readers can easily relate to the rawness of making ends meet with an annual calf check or still being an American regardless of the outcome of the election. Ranching on the Hi-Line Richelle, her husband Shane and daughters Macy (9) and Ainsley (7), ranch with Richelle’s parents, Robert & Debbie Molitor. Their commercial cowcalf operation is nestled in the rolling prairie hills of north-central Montana, an area known as the Hi-Line because of the northernmost U.S. railway.
The Prairie Crocus’ Blooms in all Seasons “As far back as I can remember, we have raised Red Angus cattle, said Richelle, a fourth-generation rancher. She and Shane purchased 10 heifers when they married in 2006 to start their own herd and have grown it over the years. Richelle holds degrees in Equine Sciences and Agriculture Operation Technology, working fulltime as a financial specialist in Havre, Montana, at Northwest Farm Credit Services. “I always wanted to be able to come home and work on the ranch fulltime but it’s hard without outside income, she said. “My role is a part-time cowgirl. I take time off work on the days we get to ride, move cows home and work cattle. I really enjoy that, especially now that our kids are getting old enough to help. I also help make ranch decisions when I can. Creative Expression Richelle started her blog, The Prairie Crocus, at the

The Prairie Crocus’ Blooms in all Seasons things I’ve shared over the past two years have just been my reflections, and I thought, ‘Who’s going to read this? I’m just sharing a ridiculous portion or event of my day.’ But those are the posts that are often very popular. Others are going through the same things and can relate.” Blooming Where She’s Planted “Growing up, I was always the horse-crazy girl,” Richelle recollected. “I liked to write, but I was told I wasn’t very good. My teachers would say, ‘Your papers are just OK.’ So, I never pursued writing because I thought I wasn’t talented in that area.”
But writing became an outlet for stress when she wrote about topics for which she was passionate. She found her voice. “I have found my niche, and people seem to like it,” she said. “My style has evolved. It’s very different from when I first started writing when it was more of a diary where I blurted out my feelings. Now, I want my blog to be a positive space for both women and men, even when the ag sector is struggling, and we are surrounded by negativity on social media.” She also wants to reach young people who are interested in ag even though others advise them

to run the other direction. “Another young woman can read my blog and see that ranching isn’t always perfect or pretty, but it’s worth it.” She doesn’t want to sugar coat the lifestyle, but instead put a positive spin on even the hard parts. “Sometimes I get personal, heartfelt comments and messages from my readers. I can’t believe people would share that with me, a perfect stranger. But that’s good for my heart too, to know I’m not the only woman who works a fulltime job that maybe isn’t doing exactly what I want to be doing every day.”

The Prairie Crocus’ Blooms in all Seasons Her Dream Her passion for photography has evolved too. She purchased a high-quality Canon when their first daughter was born. She was determined to put the investment to good use and taught herself by studying and learning from other photographers. She currently has a coffee table book of her ranch images and a few popular blog posts available on her website. Richelle’s ultimate goal is to be on the ranch fulltime, but she doesn’t foresee not contributing with extra income. “I think that’s really important. Maybe I
can make some money off my writing. My dream is to write a book and make it big someday – to be a published author,” she shared. In fact, she has her book started but had to put it on hold when COVID-19 hit and work and school life moved into their home. “It wasn’t all bad,” she said. “The girls got to help with more ranch activities, such as calving, because they were home. Overall, I think they have experienced more than I did growing up and have a solid understanding of good, wrong or otherwise because of life on our ranch. They understand the value of work –

and the value of life – more than most kids their age.” Day-to-day life is slowly etching out a new normal for Richelle’s family with a hybrid of inschool and at-home education and a flexible work location for her depending on the school schedule. In the meantime, she will continue blogging about daily ranch life on the Hi-Line, sharing insight, images and inspiration on the newsfeed of Facebook – and touching the hearts of all who read her messages. ■

JRA Update by Andrea Rutledge, JRA President Scholarships and Scholarships That time of the year has come; and I am not talking about the time where we put up decorations and sing songs about some snowman. I am talking about the time of year where scholarship applications are starting to open. The awesome thing is that the Junior Red Angus Association is more than just college scholarships – that’s right the opportunity for our juniors to earn money goes beyond college. Scholarship Opportunities: · College Scholarships · Beef Industry Education Scholarship · Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship · Round-Up Commercial Cattlemen’s Scholarship There is a minimum of five $1,000 scholarships given out to graduating high school seniors or current college freshman. Even better, scholarship awards are not limited to one year; last year’s recipients may submit a scholarship application for the current year. Applications are due by Feb. 15. The Beef Industry Education Scholarship was created to encourage JRA members to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for agriculture, the beef industry, and the Red Angus breed. Scholarships are up to $200 to help offset registration and fees for the educational experience. The next deadline for this scholarship is Jan. 1. The Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship is to assist JRA members’ participation in national JRA leadership events throughout the year. This may include registration and travel expenses for major JRA events like the Young Stockman Program and RoundUp. The application for this scholarship is due at the time of registration for the respective event. Each year, JRA offers two scholarships to help facilitate the involvement of youth interested in commercial beef production. The intent of this scholarship is to provide the opportunity for individuals, who are not already JRA members to attend Round-Up. Participant suggestions are requested by April 1 so individuals have time to complete an application by May 1.
56 Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2020
For more information on all of these scholarships visit redangus.org/junior-redangus/programs-events. JRA values creating well-rounded individuals that are prepared to lead our industry – let us help with the process!

2020-2021 Board Andrea Rutledge, Montana President jraandrea1@gmail.com Izzy McGibbon, Arizona Vice President jraizzy1@gmail.com
The Board has been BUSY! The Junior Red Angus Board of Directors have been keeping busy and working to reach juniors all across the country. We were all finally able to meet in person for the first time since being elected. We flew into Denver, Colorado, and spent the next two days in a whirlwind, learning from RAAA staff and working to plan out our yearly goals, as well as our first event of the year. This was an incredibly valuable time that we were able to spend together learning about our breed and preparing for our upcoming year.
Tiffany Watkins, Florida Secretary jratiffany@gmail.com
From there, three board members flew to Kansas City for the American Royal. We also had two board members attend the Red Western Classic in Reno, Nevada. Last but not least, we were able to have two board members attend NAILE in Louisville, Kentucky. It is not every day that we get to interact with the juniors, and we were so excited to take advantage of these opportunities and we look forward to meeting more juniors down the road.
Dr. Kim Heller, Junior Program Coordnator juniors@redangus.org
Be sure to connect with your JRA Board of Directors on social media platforms.

Throughout this next year we want to interact with all of you even if we don’t get to meet face to face! ■
Register Now!
Registration is now open for the Young Stockman Program that will be held virtually. We are excited for the opportunity to offer so many juniors this educational, hands-on event. Our focus area for this year’s event is, “My Red Angus, My ResponseAbility.” Juniors will have the opportunity to learn about what abilities we have to create resilience in a changing industry. The live event is Dec. 5 and is open to all youth under the age of 21 who are interested in the beef industry. If you or someone you know would benefit from attending, what are you waiting for? Just sign up! Register by going to redangus.org/junior-red-angus/programs-events/. ■
