by Johnny Rogers, RAAA President

Decade of Discovery Soon, I will be the Red Angus Association of America’s immediate past president. My board tenure has been longer than most, as my rst year was lling a vacated board seat and COVID-19 added an additional nal year as president. In the middle were six years as Region C Director and two years as president. This could be called the “Decade of Discovery” for both RAAA and myself. This time provided me with many opportunities to learn, grow and to build relationships that I would not have experienced otherwise. RAAA also went through numerous milestones and continued its mission to serve the commercial beef industry. I have included a few highlights of our journey. The key tool for a breed association is its database. Data exchange between the association and its members is critical for successful outcomes. When I started my board term, REDBULL was our database system, and our IT staff did an outstanding job of keeping it functional. However, it was an aging program past its prime. An upgrade was in order and the decision was made to build our own program in house. This was a huge undertaking, and the journey was long and tumultuous. However, seeing members enjoy their experience with REDSPro today makes the difculties worth it. RAAA will continue to invest in REDSPro to add functionality and to ensure that it stays up-to-date with technological progress.

RED ANGUS Magazine n September 2021

During this time the Red Angus female received the distinction she deserves as the beef industry’s “most-favored female.” Red Angus stakeholders have long known about the positive attributes of these fabulous brood matrons. They have set a high standard for maternal excellence and continue to be the foundation for successful cattle programs across the nation. New programs like Red Choice will help build the next generation of great Red Angus females. The demand for Red Angus bulls has been strong during this time. The industry standard Feeder Calf Certication Program has delivered value to those investing in our genetics. New programs like Premium Red Baldy and American Red are beginning to yield results and we must look for new avenues to demonstrate Red Angus value. More work is needed with feeder cattle marketing and, appropriately, it is critical objective No. 1 in the RAAA Strategic Plan. The marketplace is very competitive, and we must continue our history of innovation to deliver value to commercial cattlemen. RAAA’s commitment to a membership-driven strategic plan has never wavered. I have witnessed the implementation of more than one RAAA Strategic Plan. Each has been unique in its contribution to our mission. I am very excited about the current plan because it is very aggressive. We operate in a dynamic industry, and it will be interesting to see how we adapt to achieve our goals.

Board Commentary – Decade of Discovery Moving the RAAA Ofce to the Denver area was a difcult decision. We had many good years in Denton, but we were going to need a new location at some point. The sale of the Denton property was nancially rewarding and the Commerce City location has provided us with access to a very talented pool of potential employees. Overall, it was a very positive outcome for Red Angus. As I look back on my RAAA board experience, I am pleased with the breed’s accomplishments. However, those pale in comparison to the personal relationships I have shared with many Red Angus stakeholders. So many special moments have happened over these years with members and staff. Our time together has made a profound impact on my life and words cannot express the gratitude I have for each of you. It’s been a great ride and my heart is full. Thank you for your support and the opportunity to serve this great organization. n

Red Angus Steers Provide Perspective on Value Creation Approximately 70% of every commercial calf crop is fed out and harvested for beef. All of the steers and around half of the heifers eventually end up in a feedyard and then on to a packing plant. Therefore, every commercial cow-calf producer can benet from a basic understanding of how to produce higher value cattle that yield superior nancial results as they move through the beef supply chain. There are large differences in the value of cattle. Fortunately, we can identify characteristics that build the bottom line.

the surface. The total per-head value difference between the high and low groups was large at $233 per head. Higher value steers notably had an advantage in carcass weight (110 pounds heavier) and in marbling (49 marbling score points higher). The math is easy on those extra pounds. At an example dressed weight price of $185 per cwt., 110 pounds of carcass is worth a little over $200 per head. Even if the heavier cattle ate an extra $50 or $75 of feed while they grew bigger than their contemporaries, the net nancial benet is still favorable.

A friend and long-time Kansas cattle feeder recently shared the carcass results from a pen of 84 Red Angus steers that were harvested in July 2020. He was pleased with how the cattle fed and how they performed on the grid, and since individual data was available, it is easy to make a high-value/low-value comparison using the top and bottom 25 head (see the table below).

Marbling, and the resulting benet in quality grade, are second on the list of dollar-generating traits in which the high-value cattle excelled. They graded 100% Choice and above, versus only 64% for the low-value group. They also had 36% upper 2/3 Choice and Prime, while the least-valuable steers came in at 20%.

When carcass data is sorted and compared in this manner, key drivers in the value-creation process come to

All told, quality grade premiums separated the two groups by over $50 per head.

Association Commentary – Red Angus Steers Provide Perspective on Value Creation The comparison also shows a couple of areas in which the higher value steers did not best their low-end counterparts. Steers ranking high in total value actually had a bit more back fat, less favorable yield grades (despite a small advantage in ribeye area) and more Yield Grade 4’s and 5’s. Such an outcome is very common, given the construct of today’s grid-pricing systems. Pounds and quality tend to pay handsomely, while disadvantages in yield grade are not discounted proportionately. Of course, this does not mean cowcalf producers should ignore selection for ribeye area and overall muscle. Nor does it mean that cattle feeders can carelessly overfeed cattle and expect no consequences. The point is to understand that current grids reward pounds and marbling rst and foremost, while yield grades tend to take a back seat (at least for now).

12

Red Angus cattle perform well on grids, excelling in marbling and yield grades. We could analyze hundreds of groups sold on grids, like these Red Angus steers, and the conclusion would be the same. Red Angus cattle, in general, do tend to perform well on grids. We receive quite a few compliments from cattle

RED ANGUS Magazine n September 2021

feeders on their marbling ability and even on their yield grades. Additionally, with the tremendous selection tools RAAA offers, including both EPDs and indexes, the ability to create valuable cattle via genetic selection has never been easier. n

Marketing Update by Barrett Simon, RAAA Commercial Marketing Specialist

Customize Your Approach to Calf Marketing All too often, marketing gets put on the back burner until the weather gets cooler or we ip the calendar and realize it is time to get paid for our previous year’s efforts. In most aspects of a working ranch, we think with a long-term mindset. Whether it’s range management, genetic selection or even transition planning, the agriculture community places a big emphasis on what life looks like ve, 10 or 20 years down the road. However, it seems as though we often look through a very narrow scope when it comes to getting paid. Given the recent volatility in most, if not all, ag commodity markets, a long-term – and potentially unconventional – plan may be in our best interest. It is easy to focus on a three-week window, it is easy to continue with the same marketing process we have always done, it is easy to get behind in the other aspects of managing a cow herd. One sale barn owner shared with me this spring that he could tell me two months in advance who was bringing calves to town and which week they were coming because, “That’s just the week they always come.” In the same breath

14

he mentioned that they work just as hard for cattle weighing 500 pounds as those that weigh 800 pounds and that they advertise in all of the same ways in September as they do in November. While calf marketing is likely not that steady for most of us, I do believe it is easy to narrow our focus to comparing costs and returns over a threeweek time period and then decide when would be the greatest opportunity for market success within that small window. There is no part of the cattle business that is “one size ts all” and, for many operators, it may prove to be exceedingly valuable to review the ranch’s current marketing plan and explore other more protable options. The USDA’s recent report highlighted a waning U.S. cow herd and a calf crop estimate that is approximately 3% lower from its peak numbers in 2018. Many producers are looking at alternative calving seasons and marketing outlets in the future due to a frustrating past couple of years. Unfortunately, our friends in the North and Northwest region of the

RED ANGUS Magazine n September 2021

country are getting dealt a tough hand as drought continues to set in. With that in mind, even though early summer tests for fall-delivered calves are showing signs of life, 2021 may be the year to take a deep dive into the positives and negatives of various market outlets. High-dollar corn and hard-to-nd hay in some regions may drive weaning breakevens higher than they already are. On the contrary, for those set up to do so, an unorthodox market dynamic due to the backlog of cattle may provide incentives for some to hold off on selling calves until after the October run as some analysts project calf prices to steadily increase as we move later into the year. While our commercial marketing team greatly appreciates the uptake and attendance of Red Angus special sales, we also encourage producers to make sure the date set by our team and your regional auction market manager are in YOUR best interest. If drought conditions and input costs make an earlier sale the more protable option or if the promise of rising markets show additional dollars to be made later in the year, our team is here to promote those cattle just the same. Ultimately, the marketing window that gives your program the greatest opportunity for protability with Red Angus and Red Angus-inuenced calves is our primary concern. Regardless of whether the most protable market falls within those same three weeks in October or November, we hope that your marketing venture starts with a Red Angus value-added program as we continue to use tag enrollments to not only better promote our commercial producers’ cattle, but also to leverage the inuence of Red Angus genetics, nationally, at the packer and retailer level. n

The onset of the IGS-BOLT evaluation, paired with the submission of phenotypic records, has led to a new era in genetic evaluation for the cattle industry. In an effort to collect necessary female genotype and phenotype information to improve genetic predictions, the Red Angus Association of America Board of Directors has approved the Red Cow Rally. The Rally research collaboration between RAAA and Neogen is designed to increase phenotypic data collection and submission for mature weights, body condition scores and genotypes on Red Angus ffemales. A limited number of research genotypes (GGP-LD) and rebate ffunds will be available for the project, so discounts and rebates will be iissued on a first-come, first-served basis.

DNA – Time Management is Key

by Leoma Wells, Strategic Account Manager, NEOGEN Genomics, for the Red Angus Magazine “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” – Abraham Lincoln Popular TV shows such as CSI lead us to believe we can collect one lone hair follicle and receive results back within minutes of inserting the DNA sample into a machine. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a great CSI episode as much as the next ctional crime junkie, but unfortunately, the instant turnaround isn’t possible in today’s world. Imagine missing out on a potential sale or breeding opportunity simply because the DNA testing wasn’t completed on the animal. In today’s seedstock industry, any opportunity to add value to an animal is benecial. Whether it is to be sold or retained, the ability to gain a competitive advantage is key. If we can approach DNA testing with realistic expectations and create a timeline with a little extra cushion built in, we’ll be able to set our herd up for success. When it comes to DNA testing, the earlier you’re able to submit samples, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to capture the full value of your investment. Outlined below are the simple steps each breeder can follow to submit your DNA samples and receive back results in a timely fashion. The most critical part of submitting DNA is to establish your expectations based upon facts, especially if you’re operating with a deadline on the horizon. Let’s say you absolutely need results posted by Jan. 14, 2022, so you can nish the catalog for your sale in February. Assuming all RAAA submission instructions are followed, you should submit the samples for testing no later than Dec. 3, 2021. An even more optimal time frame would be sending in samples by Nov. 19, allowing some extra time, especially to account for holidays.

All calendar dates and timelines have been estimated for the purpose of this example. With DNA, it’s always best to start early and give each area of this wheel a little extra time and potentially save yourself and others unnecessary stress and frustration. We have taken each step and translated to expected business days and turnaround times. Step 1 It is highly encouraged to ship your samples to RAAA via a method that allows the shipment to be tracked. In my opinion, it is worth the additional $8-$30 to have peace of mind, especially since you’ve already invested a signicant amount of time, energy and expense into collecting the samples. Typical mailing time can vary from 1-10 days depending on shipping method. Step 2 As long as your samples arrive with the proper RAAA paperwork included, they will go into test within three to seven business days. This timeline uctuates depending on the sample volume being received at the lab which varies based on the time of year. The lab tends to be extremely busy September through March so plan on the seven business days for this step when creating your testing plan just to be safe.

20

RED ANGUS Magazine n September 2021

Step 3 DNA is being run on the samples and results are reported electronically to RAAA via our Lab Information Management Software. Typically, from the time a sample enters testing to when results are reported to the Association is 17-28 days, depending on testing selected and current lab testing volume.

DNA – Time Management is Key

*All estimations are in days. Individual experiences may vary. Step 4 RAAA uploads the results into its database and reports them to the breeder. This process is streamlined and efcient, but remember, we are creating an ideal timeline, so we suggest using three business days for this step. Step 5 RAAA runs genetic evaluations weekly. If the animal has a genomic test conducted, the results will be incorporated into the genetic evaluation and genomic-enhanced EPDs will be published on the animal. Depending on when the genomic test is completed and uploaded into the genetic evaluation, it could be up to 14 days before GE-EPDs are available. Given these steps, it could take three to eight weeks from the time a breeder mails their samples to RAAA to receive DNA results back from the Association. If there’s any re-testing or incorrect paperwork delays, six weeks can quickly turn into eight. Sticking to an ideal testing calendar and plan provides time to re-sample if the initial submission ends in a sample failure. From experience, approximately 2-3% of samples

There is not a way to expedite DNA testing or magically make the results appear by the push of a button, so planning ahead is crucial. 22

RED ANGUS Magazine n September 2021

fail testing. For example, if you submitted 100 samples there may be up to three samples you would need to re-collect and submit through the entire process again. It’s important to note there is not a way to expedite DNA testing at NEOGEN or magically make the results appear by the push of a button. Our best recommendation for success is to make sure you follow your Association’s DNA submission instructions closely, gather samples using proper collection techniques and mail samples at least two months before results are needed. It is also advised for breeders to create a DNA testing calendar that works for your operation and do your best to adhere closely to it. You may end up testing a few more animals than ultimately needed by submitting samples earlier than normal, but the benet of having all the information before the nal deadline is well worth it. Cost versus worth. DNA testing is an important investment in the future of the genetics for your operation and that of your customers.

n

By collecting and submitting DNA samples earlier rather than later, there’s built-in time to collect new samples if a test fails, ensuring accurate data at sale time.

Travis Shaffer (605) 280-0693 Brian Brigham (970) 481-5192 hansineranchsd@gmail.com hansineranch.com

How to Stay Top-of-Mind to Buyers Year-Round by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Editor and Director of Communications Late summer. Synonymous with baling hay, state fairs, chopping silage and bull sale prep. Wait, what? Yes, even though it’s September we are already on the topic of the 2022 spring bull sale season. And while many producers are focusing on the tangible work to be done such as DNA sampling, foot scoring and nutritional planning for fall and winter, it’s also critical to analyze and implement an online marketing strategy to build brand awareness leading up to the sale. Yes, that means social media and website updates. Quite frankly, if online promotion isn’t part of a ranch’s marketing strategy, potential buyers and sales are left on the table. And in an industry with already tight margins, no stone should remain unturned. Survey data from Forbes showed that 72% of Americans use some sort of social media daily – that’s quite a big chunk of the population scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and several other platforms every day. It’s a fair assumption that quite a few farmers and ranchers fall into that data gure, as well.

Hypothetically, if you learned that 72% of bull buyers read the Red Angus Magazine, wouldn’t that entice you to advertise every month? One might wonder, “My sale isn’t until March. I don’t need to worry about promoting it until January.”

“Survey data from Forbes showed that 72% of Americans use some sort of social media daily.” Which might be true, but the key to an online marketing strategy is the promotion of an entire brand, not just one single event. Take for example Chevrolet’s employee pricing sale that takes place in December annually. While its marketing department heavily promotes that specic sale leading up to and during it, the brand doesn’t disappear or stop its marketing efforts once the sale is over. Chevy has a consistent marketing strategy to keep its line of trucks and cars in front of potential buyers year-round. In fact, that kind of strategy is so successful that the

communications department at Red Angus has adopted it as our own over the past several years, striving to keep Red Angus in the media spotlight on a consistent basis to ensure name and brand recognition 24/7/365. If it works for Chevy and the RAAA, it will work for individual ranches, too, and you don’t have to have a huge advertising budget to make it happen. Brand awareness can be developed on social media with a little bit of creativity and time. Not surprisingly, whenever the subject of social media comes up in a room of ranchers, there are almost certainly two reactions: 1) Facebook and/or Instagram are ridiculous – that’s no place for ranch promotion, or 2) Social media is so big and intimidating, where should I even start?! The rst thought is 50% accurate – social media can be a huge mess on any given day. However, there is absolutely still room for promoting a ranch online. Just by having a Facebook or Instagram prole for their business, producers can carve out a spot to promote their ranch and share their practices, activities and, when the time is right, a nished sale catalog for buyers’ perusing.

Take lots of photos of moving cattle and other day-to-day ranch activities to build up a bank of images to use later on social media.

How to Stay Top-of-Mind to Buyers Year-Round Conversely, there are some who genuinely wish to dip their toes into online promotion yet feel overwhelmed, which is understandable. To get started and ease some of the anxiety, create a Facebook page for the ranch and focus on posting three to four times per week to get the feel for it. Don’t worry about Instagram, YouTube or the rest of the gamut until you feel that you’ve got the Facebook page under control. Another common misperception is that content must be “viral” for it to be valuable. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Sharing pictures of summer and fall ranch work, branding, chopping silage, calving season, etc. are all great examples of content and photos that can be shared outside of sale season to pique interest in an operation. Another way to approach the “What to post?” conundrum is to think about what kind of content you nd

30

appealing, and then try to mimic or create similar content to share. For example, I’m a sucker for a picture or video of a new calf taking its rst steps. Seeing a photo like that stops me mid-scroll immediately. If I never grow tired of seeing that, I bet other ranchers don’t either, so I incorporate a lot of those kinds of photos into the social media strategy for the pages I manage. If all else fails, share a popular meme until the creative juices start owing. Another common objection to utilizing social media is the lack of time needed to take photos, write captions and post consistently. Again, this is understandable but can be worked around with a little bit of strategic planning. Spending all day moving cows across pastures? Get out that phone and take lots of photos of the crew, cattle and horses from several different angles. Those photos can be used anytime there is a lack of “something interesting” on the ranch.

RED ANGUS Magazine n September 2021

The same rules apply for hauling hay, working with kids on the ranch, riding around in the feed truck, etc. Fill up your phone with photos and then choose one if you’re feeling uninspired or short on time. Facebook also has a great scheduling tool that allows multiple posts to be scheduled days or weeks in advance. These tactics are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to social media but nothing worthwhile was ever accomplished immediately. Taking small steps, consistently, to build ranch and brand awareness online will ultimately lead to a broader audience and more potential buyers. And who knows, you might even like it! For more answers to the burning questions about the world of social media and digital promotion, contact brandi@redangus.org to set up a consultation with Red Angus Creative and get started with your own spotlight strategy. n

BETTER TOGETHER...

For over a decade the Dykes and Mehlhoff families have been friendly competitors, compelling each other to do a better job of supplying bulls and service to our ranching customers. During this time we’ve shared herd sires, donor dams, quite a few bull customers, a strong friendship and family adversities. Now we’re going to work together - to better serve our respective legacies and to better supply Red Angus seedstock to the families that depend on our genetics.

Vigorous Red Angus Demand Mirrored in Association’s Growth

The 2020-2021 scal year for the Red Angus Association of America was completed June 30 and saw the United States and the beef industry regain its footing as it recovered from a truly unique period of time. As businesses reopened, beef demand surged and prices slowly rebounded to exceed the previous year. The RAAA posted another solid year with growth and enthusiasm, experiencing vigorous demand. The Red Angus female continues to be the industry’s most favored, providing superior maternal ability to the American cowherd. Membership in the RAAA grew 6% for the second year in a row, reaching 2,931 regular members while the Junior Red Angus Association saw a 7% increase with 1,181 members. The number of cows on THR inventory again topped 100,000 – the second highest in history. The popularity of Red Angus cattle with their diverse set of positive characteristics and industry-leading convenience traits have fueled this rapid growth. The junior program continues to prepare Red Angus youth to become valuable assets for the beef industry. Commercial Marketing team members witnessed the most spirited bull sale season in many years. We were privileged to see 7,516 bulls sell this spring averaging $4,977. This thriving demand led to bull transfers increasing by 8%. These transferred bulls allow commercial cattlemen to enroll in Red Angus value-added programs. The Feeder Calf Certication and Allied Access programs have enrolled over 2.9 million head of cattle since their inception. These programs are an effective method for cattlemen and women to differentiate their calves and receive added value at a very low cost. A new ve-year Strategic Plan was nished, providing clear direction for the RAAA. This plan outlines critical objectives, strategies and tactics for implementation of programs and processes that will keep Red Angus moving forward and accomplish its long-term vision: “Dominate the beef industry with Red Angus genetics.” The plan is available on the Red Angus website under the “About Red Angus” tab. We encourage you to view the plan and embrace the opportunities ahead, knowing that RAAA has a clear vision for the future. The RAAA is in a great position for the future. The board, breeders, stakeholders and staff are committed to a prosperous beef industry powered by Red Angus genetics. We must continue to be the innovators, relentlessly pursuing industry leading techniques, tools and services and continue doing this with integrity. n 36 RED ANGUS Magazine n September 2021

CYDECTIN ® (MOXIDECTIN) POUR-ON: LET THE GOOD GUYS ROLL. The industry's #1 selling pour-on brand contains the active ingredient moxidectin, which controls 33 parasite species and stages while remaining dung beetle friendly.2,3 In a study, manure from cattle treated with Cydectin showed no visible difference in the number of dung pats destroyed or buried compared to dung pats from untreated cattle.2 Dung beetle adults and larvae play a vital role in pasture manure management, recycling cattle dung, improving soil health and keeping other cattle parasites in check.

Red Hot and No Bother by Rudy Pooch for the Red Angus Magazine

Summertime can be a vile season for cattlemen in southern states. Producers must manage hot temperatures and high humidity. These factors can cause severe cases of heat stress for cattle resulting in reduced intake and gains. Simultaneously, producers must manage fescue endophytes. Fescue serves as a large portion of the grazing forage that many producers throughout southern states have available. In northwest Arkansas, along the southern edge of the Ozark Mountains, the topsoil is shallow and rocky. All of these added stressors can leave producers with second-rate cattle performance in the summer months if not managed properly. Rolling Hills Farms of Boone County, Arkansas, has found a leg up on their environment’s tough conditions thanks to the power of Red Angus genetics. “They work really well for the type of environment we have,” said Laura Wilburn. Robert and Laura Wilburn, along with their children Katie and Hunter, are the rst and second generations of Rolling Hills Farms. Robert and his father ran a commercial cowcalf operation until he and his wife, Laura, purchased their rst parcel of land in 2013. A few years later, they had the opportunity to purchase additional land with a breeder hen operation included. Another breeder hen house was added two years later and is now housing its third ock. They also raise a few show goats. “We are unique because we are diverse. The Red Angus genetics add to that,” mentioned Laura. Hunter, Laura, Robert and Katie Wilburn made up of,” said Robert. He had tried many breeds, at one time leaning toward a Charolais cross and chasing bull sales across the country. “Where we live, it’s very steep and a lot of the ground is pretty rough. I had trouble keeping bulls more than a couple of breeding seasons. Their feet couldn’t handle it,” stated Robert. Lo and behold, their solution was found with the purchase of Red Angus bulls from a local breeder. “The cattle were raised in the same environment without being pushed, and were ready to work from the moment of purchase. These bulls could handle the environment without falling apart,” said Robert. Red Hot and No Bother “They don’t hair-up on the fescue grass compared to other breeds. Those other cattle will hair-up and want to go stand in the pond all summer while the Red Angus are out there grazing and gaining,” said Robert. Primarily, the forages are fescue and bermudagrass. These grasses are extremely important in southern states due to their drought resistance. “Where we live, even though the spring has been super wet, we are always two weeks away from a drought. It dries up in a hurry,” said Robert. “When it gets dry and the ground is hard, these Red Angus don’t fall apart on you. They hang in there and work for what they are,” he added. A good mineral program is supplemented to combat fescue foot, fat necrosis and fescue toxicosis. “Overall, the Red Angus cattle just perform,” said Robert. “You don’t want to feed any more than you have to because that eats away prot,” he said. When sufcient forage is not available for grazing, Robert feeds hay to supplement the herd with protein. “That’s another reason we have stuck with Red Angus. They take care of themselves. You don’t have to push these cattle.” Before weaning, calves are fed creep feed to make the transition easier. The calves are then weaned and fed a pre-mix until they are sold. Robert keeps up with the local markets weekly and maintains a routine of selling calves around the rst week of August. He holds his spring calves until November. Robert mentions how shocking it is to some at the sale barns how much weight the moderate-size Red Angus packs. “The cattle don’t have to be 6 feet tall to reach 700800 pound weights. With feed prices high this year, I had to cut the amount of what I normally feed to about half, and those cattle still nished out the heaviest we have ever sold,” said Robert. “They did it all on grass.” Robert’s biggest draw to the Red Angus females is their fertility even at a young age. He jokes that it’s sometimes a challenge to keep a fence strong enough to ward the bulls out. “That’s what we want though,” said Robert. In the last ve years, they have pushed Red Angus genetics, which has resulted in a shorter calving season from 120 to 60 days without any hormone regimens. Today, they use AI for heifers and their base set of Red Angus cows. The main group of cows calve September-October while the remaining cows calve late February-March. “We make sure our cows are on a good mineral program even when they are carrying, not just when they have the calf,” said Robert. Robert also attributes year-round rotational grazing to a consistent calving season, moving them every seven days. 54

RED ANGUS Magazine n September 2021

EPDs: A Powerful Tool Robert shared how one cannot have enough of the sought-after Red Angus commercial female. These females are in high demand for their longevity, fertility, adaptability and efciency, and coupled with their good disposition, make them the ideal cow. “As we kept buying more Red Angus genetics and understanding the EPDs, we noticed that we were raising better females than what we could buy,” explained Robert. His ideal bull has a well-rounded set of EPDs so he can retain heifers, sell big steers and raise easy-eshing, docile calves. Docility is highly valued with young Katie and Hunter working cattle and walking through pens to do chores. Robert cannot push understanding EPDs enough. “It’s been a game changer for us. The more you learn about using them as a tool, the better off you will be,” said Robert. He credits the local operation from which they rst purchased Red Angus bulls for their willingness to share knowledge with others. Robert is inspired by their drive to learn more and do more to better their program and the Red Angus breed. Value of Diversity Between the two barns, Wilburns house about 26,000 breeding hens at a time, collecting eggs to be sent out and hatched for Tyson Foods, Inc. broilers. “On a good peak, we will roughly gather 20,000 to 21,000 eggs per day, touching each one by hand,” said Robert. Poultry litter doubles as an excellent, low-cost fertilizer. Robert applies the litter across grazing ground for two to three years consecutively, contingent on soil tests. This returns nutrients and organic matter to the soil, giving the shallow topsoil an extra boost of fertility and quality. When no additional nutrients are needed for their soil, the poultry fertilizer is sold. The farm’s diversity offers the opportunity to increase prot while decreasing production costs. Together as a Family The Wilburn family continues to buy Red Angus bulls from the same local breeder. Over the years their appreciation for the breed and relationship with the breeder’s family has grown. Robert admires how both farms operate as a family. “We don’t hire anything out – cattle, chickens and show goats – we do it all. We do it as a family,” he said. Robert is especially thankful to everyone that has helped get him to where he is today and God for all His blessings.

Adaptable Cattle with Genetics and Style

JRA Update: Red Cow, White Lights and Blue Grass by Kim Heller, Director of Education and Junior Programs The ve days in Kentucky and Tennessee were jam-packed with both education and fun! Site visits highlighted the key commodities of the region’s agriculture as well as industry partners that assist in advancing agriculture. Team challenges and individual contests showcased participants’ knowledge of cattle production and evaluation. The JRA annual meeting provided an opportunity to guide continuous improvement for the organization and members elected the 2021-2022 board of directors. The entire experience was a chance for 60 participants from 14 different states to create friendships and memories of a lifetime.

Introducing the 2021-2022 Junior Red Angus Board of Directors These juniors will dedicate the next year to equipping and preparing all JRA stakeholders to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for the Red Angus breed, the beef industry and agriculture. Emma Ahrendsen is the daughter of Brian and Karla Ahrendsen. She resides in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, where she graduated from Sioux Central High School this last spring. During high school, she was involved in football and basketball cheer, individual and large group speech, student government, National Honor Society, FFA, 4-H, track and eld, band and choir, and the Iowa Junior Red Angus Association. As a board member, Emma hopes to encourage members to get more involved. She is very excited to serve on the board and cannot wait to see what the future holds. Peri Andras is the daughter of Will and Kim Andras of Manchester, Illinois. She will be starting her senior year of high school this fall. Peri is active in FFA and 4-H, where she serves as President and Vice President, respectively. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and Morgan-Scott CEO program. Peri looks forward to serving the Red Angus breed and encouraging others to pursue leadership roles. Isaac Berg of Pipestone, Minnesota, is the son of Philip and Laurel Berg. Isaac grew up with pigs, cattle and sheep. Isaac has been involved in 4-H and FFA all throughout high school and has been involved in livestock,

meats and poultry judging. Isaac was a team captain for his cross country and track teams. Isaac has really enjoyed his time at Red Angus events like Round-Up and learned a lot and had a lot of fun. He wants to give back and help others have the same amazing experiences that he had. Natalie Evans is the daughter of Sean and Amy Evans. She and her family run a small commercial and registered Red Angus cattle operation near Jacksonville, Illinois. Natalie is a junior at Routt Catholic High School where she has been on the High Honor Roll for ve semesters, competes in varsity track and is a member of the cheer squad. She has been a 4-H member for eight years and has held the ofces of president, vice president and secretary. Additionally, she is a member of the Morgan/Scott County 4-H Federation. Natalie is very passionate about Red Angus and wants to become even more knowledgeable about the breed while developing strong relationships with other members and breeders. Shannon Jenkins, daughter of Jeff and Liz Jenkins, is a junior education major at the University of Central Missouri. Raised on a cow-calf operation in Lebanon, Missouri, her family focuses on herd functionality and appeal. During high school, she was an active board member in the local 4-H and FFA chapters and she remains involved with the Missouri Junior Red Angus Association.

Shannon believes the future of our industry lies with our youth, which is why both education and advocating are vital to her. She encourages all members to get involved with the RAAA. Mitchell VanderWal is the son of Jeff and Beth VanderWal of Brentford, South Dakota. In high school, he was involved in FFA, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, track, football, band, chorus, drama, robotics and student council. He has shown cattle, sheep and pigs through 4-H and numerous breed associations since a young age. As a board member he hopes to be an inuential leader in the breed and agriculture. He believes his extensive experience and passion for leadership, cattle and agriculture will provide a foundation for his board service. Tiffany Watkins is the daughter of Andy and Sandy Watkins, from Dade City, Florida. She is currently pursuing a degree in livestock production at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College where she is involved in the Sigma Alpha Sorority and the ABAC Cattlemen’s Association. She has also been involved in FFA, 4-H and the Junior Florida Cattlemen’s Association where she has held many leadership positions. Tiffany has been raising Red Angus for four years and is very passionate about the breed. She looks forward to promoting Red Angus all around the country, especially in the Southeast. n

Commercial Marketing: Connecting the Cow-Calf and Feeding Sectors by Nate Smith, General Manager As we pass the halfway point of my rst year with Top Dollar Angus, it seems an appropriate time to analyze and discuss what those actively involved in the marketing of commercial cattle are sharing with us and how helping them connect buyers and sellers is still the key to adding value for everyone involved. The industry sectors I’m referencing are primarily the cow-calf and feeding sectors, two parts of the industry that rely upon each other for success, but that continue to struggle to connect and communicate with each other. As a company that strives to bring value to both sides of this relationship, it has been rewarding to hear from each side about what they feel adds value and use those discussions to help connect the two, while bringing value to both. With that in mind, let me share what we are hearing from both sides with a focus on what we are learning from the feeding sector. Since joining the Top Dollar team in January, I have had the pleasure of meeting with many feedyard managers. Some operate smaller, privately owned yards. Others represent large corporate feeders with multiple locations. While the operations may vary in capacity, what weights and type of cattle are preferred, they do have similar thoughts to share with the people who produce the cattle

they feed. Several managers have shared that while quality has improved over the years, now more than ever, no one phenotypic trait can guarantee above-average performance. For example, in the past hide color could be an indicator of performance, but today scientically backed data is the only way to truly have a glimpse into the potential of a particular set of animals. That data can come in multiple forms, with past close-out and carcass data being one example. While such data can be helpful, it does have limitations. It can only be used after harvest, is never 100% repeatable due to unique environmental inuences and can be difcult for the cow-calf producer to obtain. Feedyard mangers consistently agree that genetics do matter and any time they can obtain genetic data on a set of cattle, it is helpful to their decision making. They regularly communicate knowing the genetic potential of a set of animals carries tremendous added value as a risk management tool. If the genetic potential is known, a manager now can make informed decisions that affect hedging and protability. One manager recently shared that knowing a group is Top Dollar Angus qualied allows him to keep the animals hormone free, while still getting the gains and performance he needs. It also gives the feedyard manager the

learn and help connect producers and all sectors of our industry, helping to bring value to all. n

During these discussions, the topic does come up around the emphasis on genetic selection for terminal traits. While managers do nd these traits important, they were quick to express an understanding that maternal and balanced traits are critical to rancher success. With this input from the feeding sector, it has been exciting to go back to cow-calf producers and share these thoughts and comments to help them improve. Bridging the gap between the cow-calf sector and the feeding industry sometimes requires an open mind. Some of our commercial cow-calf customers are surprised to hear those cattle feeders do want veried genetic information and have already been leveraging available genomic data into their programs. After conversations with commercial producers about interactions with feedyards, it is exciting to see how those producers start to plan their future marketings by using what we do as a Top Dollar Angus team. Yes, we’ve learned a lot from our feeding partners! And while there is still a gap between cow-calf producers and the feeding industry, it’s promising to have both sectors share ideas and observations that we as your Top Dollar Angus team can help communicate and add value for all parties involved. I look forward to continuing to

This award recognizes an individual or couple for their involvement in Farm Bureau and agriculture, and their leadership ability. Ideal candidates for this award are employed in some aspect of agriculture, however, the award is not solely based on the applicant’s occupation. During the GFB Young Farmers & Ranchers Leadership Conference, Lance and nalists Brian Fleming, of Hart County, and Ashley White, of Fulton County, gave presentations outlining what they do in their local communities to advocate for agriculture. The contestants also identied challenges farmers are facing and how the issues can be resolved. Lance grew up working on her parents’ produce farm in South Carolina. After teaching school for two years, she returned to the family farm to manage the family’s agricultural trucking business.
