LETTER

FROM THE EDITOR “TODAY IS YOUR DAY! YOUR MOUNTAIN IS WAITING. SO….GET ON YOUR WAY!” — DR. SEUSS For the ‘21 seniors, the time has finally come for you to place the graduation cap on your head, decide your future degree plan, schedule a graduation party, write what feels like 1,000 thank you letters, and say goodbye to your normal for the past four years. No one can deny that you specifically deserve an award for just graduating in less than ideal situations over the past year due to COVID-19. Life has been challenging, uncontrollable, and often overwhelming while navigating virtual learning, virtual senior student activities, and even virtual cattle shows! During this edition of Buckle & Banner, we highlight six individuals who have risen to the top of the charts during this uncertain time at school and have also been excellent Red Angus junior members in this time. As we consider all that is the Junior Red Angus Association, I often remind myself of the JRA mission statement, “The Junior Red Angus Association, the junior affiliate of the RAAA, strives to equip and prepare all members to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for the Red Angus breed, the beef industry and agriculture.” Individuals who age out of the JRA are not only the people who will be successful in climbing the mountain that Dr. Seuss mentioned, but are also looking forward to the challenge. These six young adults, who are the Junior Red Angus Association’s 2021 scholarship winners, are looking forward to climbing the mountains they will face within the beef industry and becoming the future leaders of the Red Angus breed. Find out who those six individuals are on pages 16-17. Some of those six faces will also be in attendance at multiple Red Angus events this summer before they head off to their respective colleges or trades. The juniors will start the summer at the National Junior Red Angus show hosted at the North American Junior Red Angus Event (NAJRAE) during the week of June 20-26. Buckle & Banner highlights the full detailed schedule as we start to pack our trailers and bags to head to Lebanon, Tennessee, for an exciting week of Red Angus fellowship, shows, and multiple high-quality satellite events. After NAJRAE, juniors will have a few weeks at home before heading back to Tennessee for the annual JRA Round-Up and Annual Meeting. Juniors from all across the country come together for the week-long event to build friendships, industry knowledge, and communication skills during cattle tours, educational programs, junior board elections, and more. As you can tell, we have a busy summer ahead, especially for those graduating seniors! We look forward to seeing you down the road at either the National Junior Show at NAJRAE, JRA Round-Up, or the newly designated National Open & Pen Show in Oklahoma City. Make sure to stop a JRA board member or RAAA staff member to learn how you can get involved in Red Angus events to better equip you for challenging the mountains you will one day face!

Happy Trails,

STORY BY Fallon Flick, Manager of Performance Data Programs

ummer and all the activities that come with it are beginning to gear up. For many, this means it’s time to complete the neccessary paperwork and registration deadlines. To help you navigate all things Red Angus this season, a simple and accessible resource known as the How-To Guide was created.

This document includes everything from how to become a member to the ins and outs of tattooing animals. Additionally, we have included simple steps for processes such as how to register animals from other associations and how to submit DNA. If you’re curious about collecting carcass ultrasound data or what all the National Red Angus Convention has to offer, that information is included too. It can be challenging to remember every process and requirement that goes into owning and exhibiting registered cattle. We hope this document will act as an easily referenced resource to help you along the way! The How-To Guide is attached to every new member welcome email. It can also be accessed online at redangus.org under Herd Management, or we can provide you with a copy upon request.

FROM THE CHIEF: RAAA CEO, TOM BRINK

E

very five years, the Red Angus Association of America creates a new strategic plan. Completing this task involves soliciting input from RAAA members, plus a lot of discussion and work on behalf of the Strategic Planning committee. Our new 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, similar to those that came before it, will provide direction and focus to the organization during the years ahead. The overarching goal is to continue to strengthen and grow the Red Angus breed. If you have not yet reviewed the new plan, below is an abbreviated version, presenting the four critical objectives as well as related key outcomes/goals associated with each.

RAAA is staffed by knowledgeable and proficient professionals aligned with the strategic goals and objectives. RAAA is the most desired beef industry association for employment.

CRITICAL OBJECTIVE 4: Create and improve genetic prediction tools.

KEY OUTCOMES: • • • • •

Continuous growth in quality data submissions, improvement in data warehousing, and reliability of selection tools. The most structurally sound breeding stock in the industry. Position Red Angus advantages in contributing to continuous improvement in sustainability. Increased capability of breeders to leverage genetic tools to generate progress in economically relevant traits. Establish and leverage partnerships to increase the power and impact of RAAA genetic tools.

All four of the critical objectives and key outcomes shown above are supported by specific strategies and tactics that will guide the RAAA’s efforts in pursuit of the plan’s goals. For more information on the Red Angus 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, contact the Red Angus office at 940-387-3502. ROAD TO THE WINNER’S CIRCLE: RECORDATION SUCCESS BY HALLA PFEIFF, DIRECTOR OF OFFICE OPERATIONS

T

he road to the grand drive starts at the association. Maybe that sounds silly, as we know there is so much more to it than that, but to even be able to enter, there are necessary steps that have to be taken.

For this four-part series we will walk you through the steps for a seamless show entry for Red Angus regional and national shows. This will include obtaining a membership with RAAA, registration requirements and the data entry process, DNA submission, what to expect with your DNA results, and how to enter the show. No differently than many other businesses or groups you are committed to that require a membership, so does the Red Angus Association. You must decide which membership type fits you best—junior or regular.

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP This is for individuals under the age of 21. The date of birth of the individual must be on record. The individual can carry a herd prefix of another junior member, or of a regular membership until the junior member ages out on their 21st birthday. The annual membership fee of $20 must be paid to stay in good standing. One membership is allowed per junior. The junior membership type allows for registration and recordation in the RAAA database, receive access to complete performance programs, and participate in National Cattle Evaluation (NCE). Unlike the regular membership, the junior does not have to have an active cow on inventory to stay in good standing as long as membership dues are paid annually.

REGULAR MEMBERSHIP

$100 annual membership fee must be paid to stay in good standing. The account typically is in the ranch name with listed authorized representatives. This membership type allows for registration and recordation in the RAAA database, receive access to complete performance programs, and participate in NCE. The individual is also eligible to participate in RAAA committees and run for the Board of Directors. A buyer account (animal(s) transferred for ownership purposes) may preexist and RAAA will convert this account number into the membership number. Both membership types require following all rules and regulations at the time of acceptance. When the membership has officially been processed, a welcome email will be sent as notification that it is live and ready for use. After you have a membership, you can determine how you want to go about the registration process—paper or electronic database (REDSPro). No matter the option, the data reporting requirements are the same. Paper applications must be mailed or emailed to the national office for processing. Once received, it will be placed in order received, by date. The following registration requirements are for an animal that is 100 percent Red Angus and would be classified as category 1A (100% Red Angus) or category 1B (87% or greater Red Angus).

RED ANGUS SIRE AND DAM REGISTRATION NUMBER

This is typically a 7-digit number. The account registering the calf must be the owner of the dam at the time of calving.

The main authorized representative is over 21 years of age, must have one active cow on inventory, and the 22

UNIQUE ANIMAL ID

This is given to the animal by first owner and must be tattooed in the animal’s ear with herd prefix assigned in the membership process.

EXACT DATE OF BIRTH

This is the month, day and year.

EXACT BIRTH WEIGHT

This is taken via scale within 24 hours of birth.

SEX

Specify cow, bull or steer.

TWIN

EXACT WEANING WEIGHT

Weaning weight is taken via scale on the weaning date. Note: if a weaning date and weight are not provided after a year of age the category of the animal will drop to 2. An example of the paper registration application form is below. The online database is real time and has interactive warnings and errors. Also, each data field box has a drop down menu to select from: sex, mating, etc. If a job has an error listed, you will not be able to process until it is resolved. If there is a warning, it must be reviewed and approved before processing can move forward. If a warning exists in the job at the time of process, it may indicate fees that will be applied or notification that the animal will go on hold due to missing DNA requirements.

Is the animal a twin? If so, is it a twin to a bull or heifer? The owner must also record the other twin if applicable.

MATING

Record if the calf was a result of artificial insemination, embryo transfer, or natural pasture exposure. Note: All sires and donor dams must have a DNA sample on file for parentage.

COLOR

The animal must be red to be a 1A or 1B classified animal.

HORNED, POLLED OR SCURRED

The animal must be polled to be a 1A or 1B classified animal.

PRINT

Would you like a paper registration? If a paper is requested, it will be printed and mailed the day following processing, as long as it did not go on hold due to DNA requirements needed.

NAME

The animal’s name can be 28 characters, including spaces.

EXACT WEANING DATE

This is the month, day and year.

It is important to double check the data inputted, by viewing the printable report. This can be found under the complete job tab, under data entry>online. The newly formed registration number of the animal will be listed here, along with exact information input, and can now be searched under the animal search within the database for more information such as the EPD profile If an animal goes on hold due to DNA requirements, it will be shown in this report with the appropriate on-hold status—U for needs of genetic defect testing or Z for needs of a parentage test on the parent(s). This will be covered more in depth in the coming months. As with anything important, being timely and strategic in all steps of the process will help ease the stress of making the deadline for show entry. Start the membership and registration process at least six months in advance to be able to resolve any unknown problems if they occur. If you have questions or concerns along the way, let us know. We are happy to help! Member services can be reached at data@redangus.org or 940-387-3502, ext. 1. In the second part of this series, we will cover the DNA testing process and what to expect to see when DNA results are returned. This can be a time consuming step, so make sure you stay tuned for the information.
