Venezia torna a vivere e lo fa con quel coraggio e quella determinazione che ha sempre contraddistinto il suo essere Regina dei mari e simbolo di unità tra lo Stato da Mar e Stato da Tera. Un delicato equilibrio che da sempre caratterizza le diverse realtà che compongono il suo paesaggio - dalle isole a tutto il territorio metropolitano- creano un’offerta turistica e una realtà unica al mondo, che tutti sono chiamati a rispettare e preservare.

CanoVa e Venezia, un legame senza tempo

Era il 1776 quando una scultura neoclassica commissionata del mecenate vene ziano Giovanni Falier, viene esposta con grande ammirazione del pubblico in oc casione della tradizionale festività della Sensa: la statua doveva ornare il giardino della villa di campagna della famiglia veneziana, ad Asolo.

L’ispirazione era quella del mito narrato da Ovidio e da Virgilio, dove Orfeo, assalito dal dubbio, si volta disperato, per un ultimo sguardo verso la moglie Euridice. L’autore era Antonio Canova, a quel tempo, solo 19enne… Da qui la grandezza di quest’artista che la città ha da poco ricordato e che continua a ricordare, in occasione del bicentenario della morte, avvenuta a Venezia, il 13 ottobre 1822.

La sua figura, celebre al mondo per l’opera scultorea, rappresenta l’ultimo dei grandi artisti della Serenissima, ma anche un patriota che riuscì a recuperare im portanti capolavori che la città aveva perduto durante il periodo Napoleonico.

A Venezia il suo prezioso lascito spicca soprattutto dalle luminose sale del Museo Correr dove è allestito un percorso dedicato, con bozzetti e opere del periodo gio vanile, al quale, da pochi giorni, si affianca la splendida mostra di immagini sull’o pera canoviana del fotografo bassanese Fabio Zonta (dal quale appunto è tratta la nostra copertina).

Ancora in città l’opera del Canova è visibile alle Gallerie dell’Accademia, dove nell’Ala palladiana si possono ammirare una collezione di calchi in gesso e ritratti di personaggi famosi e, alla basilica dei Frari, dove è esposto il celebre monumen to funebre all’artista su disegno e modello che lo stesso Canova aveva ideato per il Tiziano.

A chi ancora, volesse approfondire la propria conoscenza, consigliamo una visita a Possagno, città natale dell’artista, dove gli è dedicata la Gipsoteca con la straordi naria collezione di gessi (gli originali da cui nascono i marmi) e un prezioso nucleo di dipinti, disegni, oggetti e memorie.

CANOVA AND VENICE, a timeless bond

It was 1776 when a neoclassical sculpture com missioned by the Venetian patron Giovanni Falier was displayed, gathering great admiration from the public, for the traditional Fête of the Sensa or Ascension: the statue was to decorate the garden of the Venetian family’s country villa, in Asolo.

The inspiration came from the myth recounted by Ovid and Virgil, where Orpheus, overcome by doubt turns around, desperate for one last glance at his wife Eurydice.

The author was Antonio Canova, barely nineteen at the time…

Hence the greatness of this artist that the city has recently remembered and that continues to remember, for the occasion of the bicentenary of his death, occurred in Venice, 13 October 1822.

His figure, known to the world for his sculptural skills, represents the last of the great artists of the Serenissima, but also a patriot who managed to recover important masterpieces that the city had lost in the Napoleonic period.

In Venice, his precious legacy stands out espe cially in the bright rooms of the Correr Meuse um, where a dedicated exhibition is set up, with sketches and works of the juvenile period, to which, in recent days, the wonderful photo dis play of the Canovian Collection by the Bassano photographer Fabio Zonta has been paired with (from which our cover is actually taken).

Canova’s work is also visible in town at the Galler ies of the Accademia, where in the Palladian Wing one can admire a collection of plaster casts and portraits of famous people, and at the Basilica dei Frari, where the famous funeral monument to the artist is displayed, based on the design and model that Canova himself had intended for Titian.

For those who want to deep en their knowledge further, we recommend visiting Pos sagno, the artist’s hometown, where one can visit the Gypso theca, dedicated to him, with its extraordinary collection of plasters casts (the originals from which the marbles are created) and a precious nu cleus of paintings, drawings, objects and memories.

In CIttà Con ARtE, musICA, tRAdIzIonE

Se fino a non molto tempo fa il mese di novem bre a Venezia veniva immaginato solo per le dolci atmosfere autunnali, velate magari da fascinose nebbioline o dai tenui riflessi di luce, oggi, pur non perdendo i suoi caratteri più romantici, la città appare ancora presa dal fermento della grande stagione e da una folta agenda di appuntamenti legati alla cultura e allo spettacolo. Vediamo allora, sintetizzando per punti, di scopri re quali potrebbero essere gli interessi del mo mento, partendo inevitabilmente dal panorama espositivo trainato come sempre dalla mostra per eccellenza, la Biennale Arte.

L'Esposizione internazionale d'Arte. Oltre che per l’indubbio valore intrinseco va se gnalata per il suo ultimo mese di presenza: la 59esima edizione chiuderà infatti definitivamente domenica 27 novembre.

La rassegna, promossa da La Biennale di Vene zia, si sviluppa lungo un percorso che idealmente prende il via dalla mostra principale articolata tra il padiglione centrale ai Giardini e gli spazi delle Corderie.

Cecilia Alemani, la curatrice, l’ha concepita su tre grandi aree tematiche, accentrate sulla rappre sentazione dei corpi e le relazioni tra gli individui con la tecnologia e l’ambiente. Alla mostra cen trale, dal titolo “Il latte dei sogni”, si affiancano le Partecipazioni nazionali (80 in questa edizione) diffuse tra gli storici Padiglioni ai Giardini e gli spazi allestiti all’Arsenale e nel centro storico della città. Completano la rassegna gli Eventi Collaterali, esposizioni indipendenti diffuse in città, promosse da enti e istituzioni nazionali e internazionali senza fini di lucro.

Le mostre d’arte.

Al panorama sull’arte contemporanea offerto da La Biennale si affiancano le mostre d’arte, promosse dalle principali istituzioni culturali che operano in città. A riguardo, ricordiamo la spettacolare installazione del pittore e scultore tede sco Anselm Kiefer, realizzata per Palazzo Ducale, presentata dalla Fondazione Musei Civici; le due importanti rassegne presentate dalla Fondazione Pinault, a Palazzo Grassi e a Punta della Dogana, accentrate su due grandi artisti del nostro tempo, marlene dumas e Bruce neuman; le mostre a cavallo tra arte e scienza rivolte alle potenzialità della mente umana A World of Potential, pre sentata da Human Safety Net nella splendida sede di recente restaurata alle Procuratie Vecchie e Human Brains realizzata dalla Fondazione Prada negli spazi altrettanto suggestivi di Ca’ Corner della Regina. C’è poi la mostra del fo tografo bassanese Fabio zonta dedicata al Canova presso il museo Correr. Si aggiungono le mostre dedicate al design e all’arte del vetro presentate da Le Stanze del Vetro, all’isola di San Giorgio, Venini Luce 1921-1985; da Berengo Studio, Ai Weiwei: la Commedia umana e Glasstress allestite presso la chiesa di San Giorgio e l’isola di Murano; dall’Istituto Veneto, sul movimento artistico International studio Glass.

In campo museale segnaliamo infine la riapertura al pubblico del secondo pia no del museo Fortuny presentato in un nuovo coinvolgente allestimento, con oggetti inediti frutto della straordinaria creatività di Mariano Fortuny.

La musica e il teatro.

Per la pagina dello spettacolo l’attenzione cade sull’apertura della stagione Lirica del teatro La Fenice. Presentata già a luglio, con quattordici titoli d’opera, due di balletto e diciotto appuntamenti sinfonici, si presenta per il debutto il 18 novembre con il Falstaff, un’opera che conferma uno stile ormai affermato in città tra il Maestro Chung, il Teatro La Fenice e Verdi.

Sempre alla Fenice ricordiamo i due concerti del maestro tedesco Hartmut Haenchen per la Stagione sinfonica mentre al teatro malibran, si aprirà il Ciclo Veneziaindanza 2022 con il Teatro Nazionale Sloveno dell’Opera (13 novembre) per un Gala con le étoiles del Marijnsky Theater di San Pietroburgo.

Ancora per la musica da segnalare il Festival Luigi nono, giunto alla sua quinta edizione (l’inaugurazione si terrà il 4 novembre presso la sede della omonima Fondazione alla Giudecca); i cicli musicali di Venice music Project presso la Scuola Grande dei Carmini; di musikamera, alle Sale Apollinee e dei Concerti allo squero, presso l’Auditorium “Lo Squero “ all’isola di San Giorgio.

Per la prosa, l'attenzione è per le celebrazioni dei 400 anni del teatro Carlo Goldoni (1622-2022) e per la sua Stagione, da poco ripartita, che a novembre pre senterà uno spettacolo dedicato al grande Pier Paolo Pasolini (17-20 novembre).

Le tradizioni.

Qui il focus è per la Festa della madonna della salute, un rito che da sempre, contraddistingue in città questo mese.

Il 21 novembre, da quasi quattro secoli, ricorda un momento drammatico: la fine della peste avvenuta nel 1631 per intercessione della Vergine Maria, invocata dal Doge e dal popolo, un anno prima.

Una chiesa e una Madonna, raffigurata in un antico dipinto arrivato da Candia (attuale Creta), sono i simboli di quella che ancor oggi l’intera città onora con un pellegrinaggio e un rito senza tempo, quello dell’accensione di un cero alla Vergine, quale ringraziamento e richiesta di protezione.

Nell’occasione verrà allestito un ponte flottante che faciliterà l’accesso alla chiesa dalla zona di San Marco. Si potrà così assistere alla messa solenne, visi tare la secentesca basilica per ammirare la celebre “Madonna Nera” e le straor dinarie opere; fare un giro tra gli affollati banchetti della zona o una passeggiata nei dintorni verso la suggestiva Punta della Dogana e la riva delle Zattere e ancora, assaggiare il piatto tipico del momento, la “castradina”. If until not so long ago the month of November in Venice was perceived only for the subtle autumn atmosphere, shrouded perhaps by fascinating mists or soft light reflections, today, while not losing its most romantic character istics, the city still seems to be caught in the excitement of the great season and a packed diary of events related to culture and entertainment. In addition to its undoubtedly intrinsic value, it should be mentioned also for its final opening month: the 59th edition will definitely close its doors on 27 November.

The maxi-review develops along a path that ideally starts from the main exhibition, articulated between the central pavilion at the Giardini and the spaces of the Corderie.

The curator, Cecilia Alemani, conceived it over three large thematic areas, focused on the representation of bodies and the relationships between in dividuals with technology and environment.

The central exhibition, titled The milk of dreams is accompanied by the Na tional Participations (80 in this edition) spread throughout the historic Pavil ions at the Giardini and the spaces set up at the Arsenal and in the historic town centre.

The review is completed by the collateral events, independent exhibitions spread around the city, promoted by national and international non-profit organizations and institutions.

The overview on contemporary art offered by La Biennale comes with art exhibitions promoted by the main cultural institutions operating in the city.

Regarding this, we recall: the spectacular installation by the German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer, created for the Doge’s Palace, presented by the Civic Museums Foundation; the two important displays presented by the Pinault Foundation, at Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, centred around two great artists of our time, marlene Dumas and Bruce Neuman; the exhibitions, straddling art and science, meant to showcase the potential of the human mind, A world of Potential, presented by Human Safety Net in the beautiful recently restored venue at the Procuratie Vecchie, and human Brains, brought forth by the Prada Foundation in the equally evocative spaces of Ca'Corner della Regina. There is also the exhibition of the Bassano photographer Fabio Zonta dedicated to Canova at the Correr museum. Added to all this are the exhibitions dedicated to the design and art of glass, presented by Le Stanze del Vetro, Venini (Luce 1921-1985), on the island of San Giorgio; presented by Berengo Studio, Ai weiwei: the human Comedy and Glasstress set up at the church of San Giorgio and the Island of Mura no; presented by Istituto Veneto, on the International studio Glass artistic movement.

Finally, for museums, we point out the re-opening to the public of the second floor of the Fortuny museum, with a new engaging setting showcasing objects stemming from the extraordinary creativity of Mariano Fortuny.

For the shows page the attention falls on the opening of the Opera season of La Fenice theatre. Presented already in July, with fourteen opera titles, two ballets and eighteen symphonic events, it debuts on 18 November with

the Falstaff, an opera that confirms a well-established style in town between Maestro Chung, La Fenice Theatre and Verdi.

The first artistic outcome of an articulated and innovative project conceived by Irina Brook, set in Venice in the charming rooms of the Casa dei tre Oci, on the Giudecca Island.

Double Meaning is the accessibility path aimed at blind, visually impaired and sighted visitors in an inclusive key.

During the tactile exploration of the relief reproductions, guided by Valeria Bottalico, participants can enjoy a selection of paintings from the museum’s collection. This museum preserving the memory and history of the Jewish community in Venice is located in the historic and evocative Ghetto square in the Jewish district of Venice. Currently closed due to restoration work, it offers the possibility of a guided tour, from Sunday to Thursday, at the sixteenth-century Scola Levantina and Scola Spagnola, and on Friday at the Scola Levantina and the Luzzatto midrash.

La mostra, sviluppata tra il padiglione centrale ai Giardini e gli spazi dell'Arsenale sarà affi ancata dalle 80 Partecipazioni nazionali disposte tra gli storici padiglioni e varie sedi in città.

Aperta al pubblico presso le stanze del Vetro, nell’isola di san Giorgio e inserita nel ciclo dedicato alla storia della celebre vetreria Venini, questa nuova esposizione intende raccontare l’attività della celebre fornace nel campo dell’illuminazione, dalla piccola alla grande scala, mostrandone alcuni degli esempi più rappresentativi.

In occasione della mostra, verrà riallestito il celebre “Velario” realizzato per la copertura di Palazzo Grassi e, come omaggio a Carlo Scarpa, la ricostruzione del grande lampadario a poliedri progettato dall’architetto per “Italia 61”.

La mostra resterà visibile fino all’8 gennaio 2023.

Promoted by the Venice Biennale and curated by Cecilia Alemani, this great international exhibition dedicated to contemporary art will be outlined in 2022 around three thematic areas: an illustration of bodies and their metamorphoses; the relationship between individuals and technologies; the intertwining bonds between bodies and Earth.

The central exhibition, structured between the central pavilion at the Giardini and the spaces at the Arsenal, will be flanked by the 80 National Participations located amongst the historic pavilions and sundry venues in town.

The showcase is accompanied by 31 Collateral Events promoted by national and international bodies and institutions (see pages 40, 41).

• VENINI: Light 1921 - 1985.

Open to the public at the stanze del Vetro, on the san Giorgio Island, starting on 18 september and included in the cycle dedicated to the history of the famous Venini glassware, this new exhibition aims to narrate the activity of the famous furnace in the field of lighting, from a small to a large scale, by showing some of its most representative examples.

Specifically for this exhibition, the famous “Velarium” created to cover Palazzo Grassi will be setup again and, as a tribute to Carlo Scarpa, the large polyhedron chandelier designed by the architect for “Italia 61” will be reconstructed.

The exhibition will remain viewable until 8 January 2023.

Ospitata nella Sala delle Quattro Porte e inserita nel percorso del museo Correr è questa la prima mostra italiana dell’artista di origine vietnamita residente da molti anni a Parigi.

Si tratta di un’installazione creata e progettata per l’occasione composta da 14 dipinti, alti ciascuno tre metri, collocati in un mistico connubio tra antico e moderno attorno alla scultura lignea della “Madonna della Misericordia”, opera risalente al XV secolo.

Hosted on the third floor at the Old Procuratie, the headquarters of the human safety Net, a foundation created by the Generali group with the aim of offering new potential to vulnerable persons, this exhibition, by curator Orna Cohen, is presented as an experiential journey in which visitors are invited into a sequence of experiences which increase their self-awareness and the perception of the world at the same time.

In the final part, visitors will be able to gather information about the foundation’s activity and to donate half of their ticket cost to one of the programmes (freely chosen) managed by the Foundation itself.

Hosted within the Quattro Porte hall and included in the Correr museum circuit, it is the first Italian exhibition for this long-time Paris-resident artist born in Vietnam.

“Questi scritti, quando verranno bruciati, daranno fi nalmente un po’ di luce” E’ questa l’esposizione di punta di muVe Contemporaneo, la rassegna biennale della Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, rifl essione sulla relazione tra arte contemporanea e quella conservata nei musei.

La mostra, che prende spunto da un passo di uno scritto del fi losofo veneziano Andrea Emo, ha come fulcro il ciclo di dipinti creati tra il 2020 e il 2021 appositamente per Palazzo ducale, dal pittore e scultore tedesco Anselm Kiefer.

L’installazione si dispiega nello spazio e nella magnifi cenza della sala dello scrutinio, in serrato confronto con le trentatré tele monumentali del soffi tto e dell’intero ciclo decorativo del Palazzo.

It begins with an Idea.

At Ca’ Corner della regina, the Prada Foundation’s prestigious Venetian venue, an exhibition scheme entirely dedicated to the study of the brain marks the third stage of the “Human Brains” project.

The exhibition, by curator Udo Kittelmann in a dialogue with its scientific committee, features an attempt to translate the history of the study of human thought, and the current state of scientific research, into an immersive exhibition format. Open to the public until 27 November.

• ANsELm KIEFEr “when burnt, these writings will finally provide some light”.

This is the flagship exhibition by MuVe Contemporaneo, the biennial showcase by the Venice City Museums Foundation, a reflection on the relationship between contemporary art and what is preserved in museums.

The exhibition, which is inspired by an excerpt from a writing by Venetian philosopher Andrea Emo, is centred on the cycle of paintings created between 2020 and 2021 specifically for the Ducal Palace, by German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer.The installation unfolds within the space and magnificence of the scrutinio hall, in a pressing comparison with the thirty-three monumental canvases on the ceiling and the entire decorative cycle at the Palace.

A selection of exceptional photographs celebrates the bicentenary of the death of the great neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova at the museo Correr venues.

The images, seen through the contemporary lens of the Bassano photographer Fabio Zonta, show the marble sculptures of the great master in a new light, discovering, through the discipline of still-life, materials and forms accentuated in their beauty both from an artistic and a sculptural point of view.

The exhibition, promoted by the Civic Museums Foundation of Venice and visible until 5 February 2023, joins the splendid Canovian Collection located in the Neoclassical Rooms of the museum.

Nei suggestivi spazi di Punta della dogana, la Fondazione Pinault presenta questo inedito percorso dedicato allo scultore, fotografo video e performance-artist statunitense: sono lavori storici affi ancati da un nucleo di opere più recenti, alcune delle quali esposte per la prima volta in Europa.

La mostra rende particolare omaggio ad una serie di recenti video, a partire dalla rivisitazione di uno dei primi lavori in cui Nauman sperimentava l’uso delle immagini in movimento: il celebre “Walk with Contrapposto” del 1968.

In the heart of a Palladian church of san Giorgio maggiore the vast hanging sculpture La Commedia Umana will finally be unveiled in Venice for the first time after its public debut earlier this year in Rome.

Handcrafted from over two thousand pieces of Murano glass, the sculptural installation acts as a vivid centrepiece, while a network of weaving roots and unexpected Lego pieces await within the exhibition spaces of the grand monesterial complex.

These strands bring together the central themes of Ai Weiwei's work: nature, spirituality, and the continual fascinations of the contemporary world. until 27 November.

Over one hundred works by one of the most influential artists in the contemporary scene, in a great exhibition tracing at Palazzo Grassi an itinerary centred on pictorial production, with a selection of paintings and drawings starting from 1984, and novel artworks created in the past few years from the Pinault Collection, from international museums and private collections.

Marlene Dumas’s work, concentrating on the depiction of the human figure and its related emotions, draws its inspiration from newspapers, magazines, film-frames or personally shot polaroids.

In Mestre, in the Candiani Cultural Center venues, the Civic Museums Foundation of Venice presents this new exhibition project drawn entirely from its own collections and in particular, from those of the Inter. Gallery of Modern Art in Ca' Pesaro.

Through about forty masterpieces including paintings, works on paper and sculptures, the exhibition tells the fascinating journey of abstract art from its birth to the contemporary, from Vassily Kandinsky to Paul Klee, from Joan Mirò to Antoni Tàpies to the Italians De Luigi, Santomaso, Tancredi, Vedova...

- Archinto, a series of previously unseen artworks by German artist Georg Baselitz, featuring 12 canvases set inside the original Eighteenth-century stucco frames where the Grimani family portraits had pride of place up to the 19th century.

L'esposizione a cura di Stefano Coletto, vede coinvolta una selezione di 14 artisti con opere realizzate e acquisite negli ultimi vent’anni, tra il 1998 e il 2018.

L'intervento si è svolto in diversi spazi della struttura carceraria e nell’orto biologico del carcere.

This display shows 20 years of history of the prestigious Venetian foundation drawn from a selection of works from its recent collection, established thanks to the purchase prizes of the annual Collectives and donations.

The exhibition, curated by Stefano Coletto, involves a selection of 14 artists with works created and acquired in the last twenty years, between 1998 and 2018.

Presented in the Galleria of st mark's square, the exhibition will remain visible until 4 December.

Visible in the institutional headquarters of Palazzetto Tito, this two-channel video installation questions the relationship of the individual and the community with the natural element, intended as an antidote and vehicle for a possible well-being.

The pivot of the exhibition is an important social project wanted and supported by the more than one-hundred-year-old Bevilacqua La masa Foundation, built inside the women's prison Le Convertite in Giudecca, over the course of 2022. The project took place in different areas of the prison facility and in the prison's organic garden. until 4 December.

A contemporary glass collection

This exhibition tells the story of a collection established between 1990 and 2020, born from the friendship between a gallery owner and a collector who shared a strong passion for the city of Venice and for glass as art. As of now, it is the only one in Italy documenting the "International Studio Glass" art movement.

The exhibition itinerary, visible at the Veneto Institute of sciences, Letters and Arts at Campo Santo Stefano, testifies to the work of 53 international artists with a corpus of 106 works in glass made between the 1950s and the present in Venice, as well as in academies and glassworks in Bohemia, in European research centers, in the studios-furnaces of American, Canadian and Australian artists.

Allestita negli spazi del Portego di Ca' Giustinian, sede della Biennale di Venezia, questa mostra illustra e documenta la prima edizione della celebre rassegna cinematografica che si svolse dal 6 al 21 agosto 1932 sulla terrazza dell’Hotel Excelsior, al Lido di Venezia, con il nome di Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica.

Tra i materiali esposti - conservati dal 1932 all’Archivio Storico della Biennale - manifesti e locandine originali dei programmi, foto di scena dei film presentati e d’attualità nel contesto del Lido dell’epoca.

Dopo il successo riscontrato per la mostra sul Canova il Comune di Treviso dedica al suo più grande pittore la più ampia monografica mai realizzata, con opere molte delle quali mai esposte in Italia.

Set up in the halls at the Portego of Ca’ Giustinian palace, the headquarters of the Venice Biennale, this exhibition illustrates and documents the very first edition of the famous film festival, which took place from 6 to 21 August 1932 on the terrace at the Excelsior Hotel on the Lido of Venice island, under its name of International Exhibition of Cinematographic Art.

Among the items on display - preserved at the Biennale Historical Archives since 1932 - are original programme posters and playbills, photos from the sets of screened films and from topical events within the context of the Lido at that time.

• ABYss - City of Venice 2022

Annual review of the winning photos of the "Abissi Underwater Photo Venice" competition now in its fifteenth edition.

Thirty photos are displayed in the evocative setting of the Cetacean Gallery at the Natural history museum at the Fondaco dei Turchi, selected from over 500 images by photographers from 12 countries including Taiwan, Hawaii, Malaysia, Greece, Belgium and even the tiny island of Reunion.

The exhibition will be visible until 6 November.

After the success of the Canova show, the Municipality of Treviso dedicates the largest monographic exhibition ever made to its greatest painter, with many works most of which have never been displayed in Italy before.

The exhibition, visible until 15 January 2023 at the museum of santa Caterina, conveys the creativity and extraordinary quality of the work of Titian's pupil, gathering his masterpieces together from the most prestigious museums in the world, including the National Gallery in London, the Louvre in Paris, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, but also the Uffizi Galleries in Florence and the Vatican Museums.

Tradizionale pellegrinaggio e festa popolare a ricordo di un voto della cittàrivolto alla vergine maria contro la terribile epidemia di peste avvenuta nel 1630.

Un ponte di barche posato per l'occasione sul Canal Grande da sabato 19, favorirà il passaggio della folla dalla zona di San Marco.

Il programma che verrà diffuso alcuni giorni prima della festa, comprenderà una messa solenne celebrata dal Patriarca di Venezia, visite guidate alla chiesa e alle sue opere, aperture speciali dei musei circostanti.

The Venice Cemetery, born of a Napoleonic decree in 1804 and currently part of the European monumental cemeteries circuit, hosts the gravestones of the famous founder of Russian ballet Sergei Diaghilev, composer Igor Stravinsky and poet Ezra Pound, among others. Traditional pilgrimage and popular fete in remembrance of a vow made by the city of the Virgin Mary against the terrible plague epidemic of 1630. The program, which will be broadcast a few days before the feast, will include a solemn mass celebrated by the Patriarch of Venice, guided tours of the church and its works, special openings of the surrounding museums.

Few cities in Italy (and in Europe) may boast a museum scenario like this city’s. Set inside fine palaces and ancient abodes within a radius of a few hundred metres, they are an integral part of the huge cultural heritage the city assimilated over its centuries of history. But how to choose a museum, or museums, to most attract one’s curiosity and desire for knowledge? Here in brief, is how to find your way around.

City museums

Managed by the Venice City Museums Foundation known by its acronym MUVE, they represent a part of the city’s huge cultural heritage, with over 700,000 artworks. Eleven museums in total, run by a single body, boosted by MUVE also with notable art exhibitions. They include the Ducal Palace, the Correr, Ca’Pesaro, Ca’Rezzonico… Entry to such venues is by a single ticket, or the “Museum Pass” circuit system, or the “Saint Mark’s Museums” integrated circuit.

Five in town and three in Venetian territory, these museums managed by the Ministry of Culture - Regional Directorate for Museums - are part of a museum system featuring some of the area’s top museums, including the Galleries of the Accademia and the Giorgio Franchetti Gallery in Venice among others, and Villa Pisani in Stra along the Brenta Riviera.

This section lists privately-managed museums or ones run by individual Foundations. We may here mention for importance the Peggy Guggenheim Collection; the Querini Stampalia Picture-Gallery; the Palazzo Cini collections.

Churches, Devotion schools and religious museums

Churches and devotion schools, the latter being ancient town guilds, are also part of the city’s museum heritage. Among them, for importance, we find the basilica of Saint Mark at the very top with its precious museum, the monumental basilicas of the Frari and of Saints Giovanni & Paolo; the Scuole Grandi of San Rocco, San Giovanni Evangelista, the Carmini, San Giorgio dei Greci, true art coffers; plus the Jewish and the Hellenic ones among the museums.

All’interno visibili le sale del Maggior Consiglio, del Senato, del Consiglio dei Dieci, decorate con tele di Tintoretto, Tiziano e Veronese, gli appartamenti del Doge, l’Armeria e le Prigioni.

The ancient seat of Government and Justice and the Doge’s residence from the 9th century to the fall of the Republic. It is possible inside to visit the Greater Council, the Senate and the Collegium halls, decorated with paintings by Tintoretto, Titian and Veronese, the Doge’s apartments, the famous Council of Ten, the Armoury and the Prisons.

The museum offers a compelling tour of Venetian history and art. Most noteworthy are the painting gallery, with mainly Venetian 14th to 16th century masterpieces, the Neoclassical section with a collection of works by Canova, the precious historical institutional collections, studies on urban development and everyday life.

Considered a temple to the Venetian 18th century, within a monumental building by Longhena and Massari, it holds noteworthy paintings set in a context of precious period furnishings and ornaments as well as the Martini and Mestrovich collections (15th - 20th century Venetian school paintings).

A collection of paintings, fabrics, objects and a series of scenic lamps in a striking Gothic palace describe the life and passions of eclectic Catalan artist Mariano Fortuny. The venue, now included within the city museums circuit, hosts seasonal art exhibitions.

di ambiente settecentesco con arredi, abiti e accessori, figurini, tessuti, libri di varie epoche. Si aggiunge una sezione sulla storia dell’arte profumatoria veneziana ed italiana, attraverso una collezione di oggetti, flaconi, strumenti ed una serie di “stazioni” olfattive.

Residence-museum: an exquisite space with 18th century interiors and a collection of dresses and accessories, fabrics, books and fashion-plates from various periods. A section presenting the history of Venetian and Italian perfumery art is included within the circuit, thanks to a collection of objects, vials, instruments and a series of scent “hubs”.

Casa di Carlo Goldoni

Casa natale del celebre commediografo veneziano del Settecento. Oggi l’edificio ospita un piccolo museo goldoniano, una Biblioteca, l’Istituto internazionale per la ricerca teatrale, oltre al celebre teatrino di marionette proveniente da Ca’ Grimani ai Servi.

The native home of this famous 18th century Venetian playwright. The building now houses a small Goldonian museum, a Library and the International Institute for Theatre Research, together with the famous puppet theatre from Ca’ Grimani ai Servi.

In un’isola concessa nel Settecento dalla Serenissima Repubblica, nasce la congregazione Mekhitarista di Venezia e, da questa, quella che diventerà la più importante Biblioteca armena in Occidente. Si affianca una raccolta di opere, miniature e documenti di storia armena.

Un’antica chiesa medioevale, un monastero, una Scuola Grande rappresentano quello che è stato il grande complesso di Santa Maria della Carità, oggi Gallerie dell’Accademia, splendido percorso nell’arte veneziana per eccellenza, la Pittura. Dal ‘300 al ‘700, con un itinerario che si sta rinnovando grazie al restauro dell’antico monastero, scopriremo con graduali passaggi, il mutamento della sensibilità nella rappresentazione del divino che, dalle Vergini bizantine su sfondi dorati di Paolo e Lorenzo Veneziano, si umanizza dolcemente nei volti delle Madonne nelle Sacre conversazioni di Giovanni Bellini. Gli enigmi di grandi e piccole tele, la Venezia dipinta nel ciclo di Sant’Orsola del Carpaccio, la Tempesta di Giorgione, La Cena in casa Levi di Veronese, la Pietà di Tiziano, solo per citare gli esempi più importanti, ci aiuteranno a conoscere e vedere Venezia con occhi nuovi. Inizialmente le gallerie dell’Accademia nascono proprio in relazione allo studio della storia dell’arte promosso dall’Accademia delle Belle Arti che in questi luoghi ha operato fino a tempi recenti. Oggigiorno le attività dell’Accademia si svolgono in quello che un tempo era l’Ospedale degli Incurabili sorto all’inizio del XVI secolo alle Zattere, con affaccio sul canale della Giudecca. Interessante dunque non solo scoprire l’arte veneziana che qui è raccolta, ma anche la storia degli edifici, non meri contenitori.

This superlative collection of Venetian paintings is housed in the historic monastic complex of Santa Maria della Carità, which has recently benefitted from a major expansion and refurbishment. Through examining the artworks with your private guide, you will trace the gradual shifts and developments in Venetian painting over the course of the centuries, from the 14th century to the 19th century. You may compare, for instance, Paolo Veneziano’s Byzantine-style images of the Virgin Mary set against gold backgrounds, with the softer and more naturalistic depiction of Mary in paintings by Giovanni Bellini and other early Renaissance artists.

Other highlights of the galleries include Carpaccio’s St Ursula cycle, Giorgione’s famous and enigmatic Tempest, Veronese’s extravagant Feast in the House of Levi, and Titian’s Pietà to name just a few. Thanks to your guided tour of the Accademia, you will see Venice and its art in a completely new light. At the beginning of its history, the Gallery was part of the Fine Art School of Venice which was housed in these same premises. Offering an opportunity to scholars to study ancient art developed throughout several centuries, the art collection had very high educational character. GettinG to Venice

Venice is an island-city, or rather, it is a city made up of a multitude of tiny islands (about 110): a configuration that is practically unique in the world. Accessing it would thus seem complex. But this is not the case.

Venice maintains an “umbilical cord” with the world, or rather with the mainland (as the Venetians call everything off the island). It is the Libertà Bridge, once called Littorio from its construction period, the 1930s.

However, its origin is earlier and dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, precisely to 1846, the inauguration date of the Milan-Venice railway line. Since then, the city not only became accessible by water but also by land… it would be the turning point of an era. But here are the main access points to the city today, in brief.

PIAZZALE ROMA

E’ lo storico terminal automobilistico di Venezia dove spiccano le due grandi autorimesse pubbliche: il Garage San Marco e il Garage Comunale AVM (quest’ultimo con un’area predisposta anche alle biciclette).

Il vasto Piazzale, di recente collegato da un moderno ponte pedonale alla Stazione ferroviaria (il ponte della Costituzione), fa attualmente da riferimento al servizio di collegamento urbano ed extraurbano con la terraferma.

Da qui arrivano e si diramano le corse dei servizi pubblici (Actv e Atvo) e privati (taxi) che collegano Venezia alla città metropolitana e ai due aeroporti, quello di Tessera e di Treviso.

Un servizio su monorotaia (People Mover) collega inoltre Piazzale Roma all’isola del Tronchetto.

Allacciata da una “bretella” al ponte automobilistico, ospita il Venezia Tronchetto Parking (uno dei più grandi garage in Europa) dove possono trovare posto quasi 4000 mezzi compresi camper e motociclette.

Al suo esterno, a pochi metri, si trovano gli imbarcaderi dai quali si dipartono le linee del servizio pubblico Actv (Linea 2) e privato per il cuore della città. Una linea speciale denominata People moover collega in pochi minuti l’isola al terminal automobilistico di Piazzale Roma.

L’isola ospita inoltre un porticciolo e il casello di accesso al servizio di Ferry-boat della linea 17 di Actv che collega il Tronchetto alle isole del Lido e di Pellestrina.

LA STAZIONE FERROVIARIA DI SANTA LUCIA

Situata in posizione ideale, questa primaria porta di accesso alla città, posta al termine del ponte della Libertà si affaccia all’ultimo lembo del Canal Grande.

Qui sono disposti gli imbarcaderi da dove si diramano le principali linee Actv per la città e le isole: la linea 1 (tutte le fermate) e 2 (diretta) per il Canal Grande e il Canale della Giudecca; la 4.1 e 4.2; 5.1 e 5.2 (circolari) per laguna nord e Murano).

Alla stazione di recente ammodernata e ampliata con servizi e centri commerciali, arrivano tutte le linee veloci che collegano Venezia alle principali città italiane ed europee.

TERMINALS - ACCESS VIA LAND

PIAZZALE ROMA

It is the historic car terminal in Venice, where two big public garages stand out: the San Marco Garage and the AVM Municipal Garage (the latter also has an area for bicycles).

This large Square, linked recently to the railway station by a modern pedestrian bridge (the Costituzione Bridge), is currently the hub for urban and extra-urban connection services with the mainland.

Public (Actv and Atvo) and private (taxis) services arrive and go from here, connecting Venice to its metropolitan city and the two airports of Tessèra and Treviso.

A monorail service (People Mover) also connects Piazzale Roma to the Tronchetto island.

THE TRONCHETTO ISLAND

Connected to the automobile bridge by a flyover, it houses the Venezia Tronchetto Parking (one of the largest garages in Europe), where almost 4000 vehicles may be accommodated, including camper vans and motorcycles.

Outside, a few metres away, are the boat-stops from where public ACTV service (Line 2) and private lines depart for the heart of the city.

A special train line called People Mover links this island to the Piazzale Roma cars terminal in just a few minutes.

The island also hosts a small port and toll-booth for boarding the Actv Ferry-boat line 17 service, linking Tronchetto to the Lido and Pellestrina islands.

THE SANTA LUCIA RAILWAY STATION

Ideally located, this primary gateway to the city at the end of the Libertà Bridge overlooks the last stretch of the Grand Canal.

Here are the boat stops from where the main ACTV lines lead to the city and the islands: lines 1 (all stops) and 2 (direct) for the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal; n. 4.1 and 4.2; 5.1 and 5.2 (circle) for the northern lagoon and Murano.

All the rapid lines connecting Venice to the main Italian and European cities arrive at this station, recently modernised and enlarged with services and shopping hubs.

MARCO POLO AIRPORT - VENICE

Located on the edge of Venice’s northern lagoon, about 13 kilometres from town, today it is the third airport in terms of passenger numbers in Italy. Managed by the Save company and expanded in 2017, it is now equipped with a vast services area, as well as parking and public transport links both by land and by water, managed respectively by Atvo (with a Shuttle service to Piazzale Roma), and Alilaguna with direct motor-launches to the city centre and its islands. Several airlines operate there, with a large network of national and international flights.

ANTONIO CANOVA AIRPORT - TREVISO

Born as a hub for charter and cargo flights, thanks to major investments which have recently expanded its runway and terminal Treviso airport is effectively one of the major airports in the Veneto region.

Located a few kilometres from the city of Treviso and about thirty from the city of Venice, today it is a base for one of the leading international Low Cost companies. Managed by the same company as the Venetian airport, it is connected to the city by an Atvo Shuttle busline.

Una linea speciale, la 17, collega invece con una spola di ferry-boat il Terminal automobilistico del Tronchetto, all’isola del Lido e, a proseguire, quella di Pellestrina.

Dal 2020 ACTV sta investendo sul trasporto “green” puntando ad inserire lungo la principale via d’acqua della città, il Canal Grande, i primi mezzi a propulsione elettrica eliminando così sia l’inquinamento acustico che quello dell’aria, favorendo allo stesso tempo, la riduzione del moto ondoso.

La compagnia nasce come servizio di collegamento acqueo tra l’Aeroporto Marco Polo e i punti focali della città: i terminal del Tronchetto, di Piazzale Roma e della Stazione, le zone di San Marco e di Rialto, le isole della Giudecca, del Lido e di Murano. The opportunities for getting around and discovering Venice are many.

A first choice, maybe the best, is no doubtthanks to its short distances - to move on foot. But sometimes, due to lack of time, heavy luggage and, last but not least, the physical impossibility of crossing the lagoon, it is comfortable, as well as pleasant from a scenic point of view, to board a transport vehicle.

There are no buses, no metro, no car-taxis in the lagoon city… nor bicycles.

Thus, public transport boats are vaporetti or battelli (traditionally so called by Venetians of yore) and fast motor-launches, called “lance”, which act as taxis, ending with one of the most iconic vehicles worldwide, which has characterised people’s transport along the city canals for centuries: the gondola.

Here are a few notes for those who, having just arrived in Venice, wish to move around by navigation.

It is the Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano Company. Its boat fleet reaches every part of town, including its major islands.

Buses and trams instead link the Piazzale Roma terminal to its metropolitan city.

Special line n. 17 links Tronchetto car-terminal to the Lido island by a ferry-boat shuttle, and further on to Pellestrina island.

Since 2020, ACTV has been investing in “green” transport, aiming at its first electrically-powered vehicles along the main city waterway, the Grand Canal, eliminating both noise and air pollution and favouring a wave motion reduction at the same time.

This company was born as a water-link service between Marco Polo Airport and focal points in town: the Tronchetto, Piazzale Roma and Railway terminals, the Saint Mark and Rialto areas, the Giudecca, Lido and Murano islands.

IL TRAGHETTO SU GONDOLE

Non molti visitatori sanno che al servizio turistico off erto dalle classiche gondole, si aggiunge il servizio delle cosiddette gondole “da parada”, cioè di quel tipo di gondola dedicata a far da spola da una riva all’altra del Canal Grande.

Antica istituzione, la gondola da traghetto è una versione “popolare” della gondola oggi usata per il turismo. Priva di ornamenti e condotta da due rematori, off re la possibilità - decisamente meno costosa - di provare l’ebbrezza di un passaggio a pelo d’acqua lungo la più famosa via d’acqua al mondo.

Il servizio, reso possibile grazie ad un accordo tra il Comune di Venezia e l’Associazione gondolieri, viene svolto tra le due sponde del canale attualmente da cinque stazi (approdi): Dogana, Santa Maria del Giglio, San Tomà, Riva del Carbon, Santa Sofi a.Il costo a tratta è di € 2,00 (o.70 con carta Imob).

GONDOLA FERRIES

Not many visitors know that in addition to the tourist service offered by classic gondolas there is the so-called gondola “da parada” service, that is, a type of gondola used for shuttling from one Grand Canal bank to the other.

An ancient tradition, the gondola-ferry is a “downto-earth” version of the gondolas used nowadays for tourism. With no decorations and guided by two rowers, it offers a - much less expensive - opportunity for experiencing the thrill of passage at water-level over the most famous waterway in the world.

This service, made possible thanks to an agreement between the Venice Municipality and the Gondoliers’ Association, is currently carried out between the two banks of the canal from five stazi (stations): Dogana, Santa Maria del Giglio, San Tomà, Riva del Carbon, Santa Sofia: the cost for one-way is 2.00 € (70 cents with an Imob card).

Il numero di emergenza unico Europeo (nuE)

Oggi in tutta Europa esiste un unico numero di riferimento per l’emergenza: il 112.

Chiunque ne avesse bisogno può con una chiamata, sia da telefono fisso, che cellulare o App, anche se usa una lingua diversa da quella del Paese in cui si trova, spiegare ciò di cui si ha bisogno.

Il sistema è gratuito e mette a disposizione il numero di telefono di chi chiama e la relativa posizione geografica.

Today there is a single reference number throughout Europe for emergencies: 112.

Anyone in need may explain what is needed with a call, whether from a landline, mobile phone or App, even using a different language from the country one is in.

The system is free and provides the caller’s telephone number and relative geographical location.

La Polizia municipale

Chiamata anche polizia locale è il primo riferimento per la pubblica sicurezza, il pronto intervento e la sorveglianza rivolto a cittadini e turisti. Il Corpo è anche responsabile della circolazione acquea e pedonale. Il suo centro operativo, presso la sede del Comune, a Ca’Farsetti, è contattabile 24 ore su 24 allo 041 274 70 70

La polizia di stato e l’Arma dei Carabinieri Sono i due corpi di sicurezza dello Stato. Riferimento primario, per smarrimento di documenti e denunce di furto. Le sedi principali sono dislocate presso campo San Lorenzo (Questura, tel. 041 2705511) e Campo San Zaccaria (Carabinieri tel. 041 27411) site entrambe nel sestiere di Castello. A focal hub in town is at the Venice Civil Hospital located in the Castello district in Campo SS. Giovanni and Paolo. Open 24/24, it is equipped with a fast motor-launch service (water-ambulances) for reaching any part in town quickly. Its number is 112

In case of need, illness or medical information, a first aid service is active at the HealthVenice clinics in Saint Mark’s Square (Procuratie Nuove 63/65) and in Piazzale Roma (Santa Croce 496). This service works every day, including holidays, from 8am to 8pm.

Fire Brigade

As everyone knows, Venice is founded on water, but its structure is made of stone and wood. This is its vulnerability, highlighted by disastrous fires over the centuries, most recently the one at La Fenice Theatre (1996). Hence the importance of this corps, located near the Rio di Ca’Foscari (Dorsoduro 3862). Its number is 112.

Also called local police, it is the first reference point for public safety, emergency response and surveillance for citizens and tourists. The Corps is also responsible for waterway and pedestrian circulation. Its operative centre at the Municipality headquarters in Ca’ Farsetti may be contacted 24/24 on 041 274 70 70.

state police and the Carabinieri Corps

They are the two State security corps. The primary contact for document loss and theft reports. Their main offices are located in Campo San Lorenzo (Police Headquarters, tel. 041 2705511) and Campo San Zaccaria (Carabinieri, tel. 041 27411), both situated in the Castello district.
