Benvenuti in una Città che, dopo i mesi bui iniziati nel novembre del 2019 con la disastrosa acqua alta e continuati con la terribile pandemia, è pronta a rinascere e lo fa proprio in concomitanza con l’avvio delle celebrazioni per i 1600 anni dalla sua fondazione.

Venezia torna a vivere e lo fa con quel coraggio e quella determinazione che ha sempre con traddistinto il suo essere Regina dei mari e simbolo di unità tra lo Stato da Mar e Stato da Tera. Un delicato equilibrio che da sempre caratterizza le diverse realtà che compongono il suo paesaggio - dalle isole a tutto il territorio metropolitano- creano un’offerta turistica e una realtà unica al mondo, che tutti sono chiamati a rispettare e preservare.

ANCHE QUESTA È VENEZIA

Un esplosione di gioia… è forse il momento più bello di un atleta dopo tanta pre parazione e fatica.

Siamo ad un passo dal traguardo e, come in uno stadio olimpico, l’ultimo giro è quello dove si sogna l’ormai imminente traguardo.

E’ evidente, siamo in Piazza San Marco, il salotto della città.

Il campanile, guardiano della laguna, la millenaria basilica che ha visto dogi e pa triarchi e le Procuratie, prestigiosa residenza dei senatori della Repubblica, fanno da straordinaria cornice ad una manifestazione che ha toccato il cuore della città: la Maratona di Venezia, nota a tutti gli appassionati della specialità come la Veni ceMarathon

Non bastava la storia, l’arte, i grandi eventi della tradizione come il Carnevale o le grandi rappresentazioni di musica e lirica… anche lo sport ha conquistato l’onore di calcare uno del palcoscenici più suggestivi al mondo e, la Venice Marathon, ormai alla sua 36esima edizione, ne ha tutto il diritto.

Lo dimostrano la partecipazione di migliaia di atleti, ma anche di semplici runner che ogni anno con entusiasmo si iscrivono per partecipare a questa, che in molti considerano una delle più spettacolari maratone al mondo e, che in questi ulti mi anni ha saputo abbinare passione a solidarietà con una importante iniziativa di Charity Program.

Ma non basta. Il mese di ottobre ofre un’altra straordinaria occasione sportiva, la Veleziana, l’unico appuntamento velico al mondo che permette ai regatanti di rag giungere a vele spiegate lo spettacolare bacino di San Marco.

Qui, i protagonista saranno il mare, la laguna e centinaia di appassionati che con le loro eleganti barche a vela si sfderanno, ma soprattutto sogneranno, la grande parata davanti a quel Molo e a quella Piazza, che hanno visto per secoli vele pro venienti da mari e luoghi lontani.

Due grandi spettacoli, per chi partecipa, ma anche solo per chi avrà la fortunata opportunità di assistervi. Anche questa è Venezia...

THIS IS ALSO VENICE

An explosion of joy… it is perhaps the best mo ment for an athlete after so much preparation and efort. We are one step away from the goal and, as in an Olympic stadium, the last lap is where we dream of the now approaching fnish line. It is clear, we are in St. Mark's Square, the parlor of the city.

The bell tower, guardian of the lagoon, the mille nary basilica that has seen doges and patriarchs, and the Procuratie, the prestigious residence of the senators of the Republic, are the extraordi nary setting for an event that has touched the heart of the city: the Venice marathon, known to all enthusiasts of the specialty as the VeniceMarathon.

History, art, great traditional events such as the Carnival or great music and opera performanc es were not enough ... even sport has won the honor of treading on one of the most evocative stages in the world and the Venice Marathon, now in its 36th edition, has every right to do so. This is proved by the participation of thousands of athletes, but also of simple runners who en thusiastically sign up to participate every year, to what many consider to be one of the most spectacular marathons in the world and that in recent years has been able to combine passion with solidarity throughout an important initiative by Charity Program.

But it is not enough. The month of October of fers another extraordinary sporting opportunity, the Veleziana, the only sailing event in the world that allows racers to reach the spectacular St. Mark basin under full sail. Here, the protagonists will be the sea, the lagoon and hundreds of enthusiasts who will challenge each other with their elegant sailing boats but, above all, will be dreaming of the grand parade in front of that pier and that Square, that for centuries have seen sails coming from seas and distant places.

Two great shows, for those who participate, but also for those who simply will have the lucky chance to attend them. This is also Venice...

OTTOBRE CON ARTE, MUSICA E SPORT

Prosegue con il mese di ottobre una delle stagioni più ricercate dal turismo internazionale. Sopito il clamore, ma anche la ressa, dei grandi appuntamenti settembrini, Venezia torna ad ofri re le sue cose più semplici… gli inimitabili scorci lungo canali e fondamenta, le incantate atmosfe re notturne, la dolcezza dei paesaggi lagunari, la magnifcenza delle sue architetture che il tempo e l’uomo, hanno saputo fondere in capolavori as soluti.

Al visitatore della città non servirebbero quin di consigli se non quello di lasciarsi liberamente andare, ma ecco in ogni caso qualche spunto sui principali eventi, per il resto, rimandiamo come sempre alle pagine a seguire.

La Biennale Arte.

E’ il must assoluto per quanto concerne il pano rama espositivo, almeno per ciò che riguarda il contemporaneo.

L’Esposizione internazionale d’Arte - questa la dizione ufciale rappresenta un’occasione pra ticamente irrinunciabile per tutti gli appassionati d’arte, ma non solo per questi.

La spettacolarità dei suoi allestimenti e degli ambienti che li contengono, oltre che il valore in trinseco delle opere, interessano non solo i tradi zionali spazi ai Giardini di Castello e all’Arsenale, ma tutta la città, dove sono difuse Partecipazioni nazionali e mostre collaterali.

Il tema dell’esposizione, lanciato quest’anno dalla curatrice Cecilia Alemani, raccoglie varie forme di ricerca artistica esplorando i mondi del sogno, del fantastico, dell’esoterismo ma anche soggetti attuali quali l’ecologia e il sociale.

Le mostre d’arte.

Si afancano alla Biennale e rappresentano da sempre uno dei valori aggiun ti al patrimonio artistico della città. Tra queste, ricordiamo la coinvolgente in stallazione del pittore e scultore tedesco Anselm Kiefer realizzata per Palazzo Ducale, presentata dai Musei Civici; quella dedicata al maestro britannico Anish Kapoor che negli spazi espositivi delle Gallerie dell’Accademia e di Palazzo Manfrin rappresenta l’intera gamma visionaria dell’artista (fno però al 9 ottobre).

E ancora, sempre per il contemporaneo, la mostra dedicata da Palazzo Grassi a Marlene Dumas e quella rivolta al performance-artist statunitense Bruce Neu man, presentata sempre dalla Fondazione Pinault, ma a Punta della Dogana.

Il panorama espositivo prosegue poi, tra le altre, con le mostre su Afro Basaldella, a Ca’ Pesaro; Rainer-Vedova, ai Magazzini del Sale; Joseph Beuys a Palazzo Cini; Antoni Clavé a Palazzo Franchetti; Murillo alla Scuola della Misericordia; Danh Vo, Isamu Noguchi, Park Seo-Bo, alla Fondazione Querini Stampalia.

C'è poi Personal Structures a Palazzo Bembo e Palazzo Mora con opere di oltre 200 artisti; per la fotografa, la retrospettiva su Sabine Weiss alla Casa dei TreO ci; per l’arte vetraia, la mostra dedicata a Venini (Luce 1921-1985) alle Stanze del Vetro e il tris espositivo presentato dalla Fondazione Berengo: Ai Weiwei, alla chiesa di San Giorgio; Tony Cragg, al Museo del Vetro; Glasstress allo Spazio Berengo.

Arte e scienza infne si fondono in due interessanti esposizioni dedicate alle potenzialità della mente umana: A World of Potential ospitata alle Procuratie Vecchie e Human Brains a Ca'Corner della regina.

La Musica e il Teatro.

Seguire un concerto a Venezia ha una doppia valenza. Ascoltare musica, ge neralmente di qualità e vivere luoghi che trasudano storia e arte. A riguardo segnaliamo a Palazzetto BruZane la rassegna dedicata al compositore francese Jules Massenet (1842-1912); il Festival Galuppi, i cicli Mitica Barocca e Concerti allo Squero, quest'ultimo nell'isola di San Giorgio.

C’è poi l’opera e la prosa rappresentate dai cartelloni dei due storici teatri della città: La Fenice e lo Stabile del Veneto Carlo Goldoni. A riguardo, nel mese, la prima opera di Mozart Apollo et Hyacintus (rappresentata al Teatro Malibran);

La Fille du Régiment di Donizetti, alla Fenice e, per la nuova stagione del Gol doni Le Vertige Marilyn con Isabelle Adjani.

Gli appuntamenti sportivi.

Chiudiamo con tre spettacolari appuntamenti, diversi per struttura e carattere ma con una comune passione e contesto scenico. L'efetto spettacolare è per tutti assicurato, partecipanti e spettatori.

- Venice Hospitality Challenge, vero e proprio Gran Premio sull’acqua riservato ai maxi-yacht. Presentata da Yacht Club Venezia sarà in scena sabato 15 ottobre sulle acque antistanti il bacino di San Marco e il Canale della Giudecca, qui ogni imbarcazione rappresenterà con un colore i più prestigiosi Hotel di Venezia.

- Veleziana, regata non competitiva, ideale festa di chiusura della stagione velica. Promossa dalla storica, ultracentenaria Compagnia della Vela, sarà come da tradizione in programma la terza domenica del mese, quest’anno il 16 di ottobre. Il percorso prenderà avvio dalla bocca di porto del Lido per giungere attraverso un tratto di laguna in pieno Bacino San Marco. Questa sarà la sua quindicesima edizione.

- VeniceMarathon, una delle più spettacolari maratone italiane, da molti anni nel novero delle più prestigiose competizioni internazionali della specialità.

Giunta alla sua 36esima edizione si distingue per la spettacolarità del percorso che dalla Villa Reale di Stra accompagnerà gli atleti, lungo la Riviera del Brenta, fno a Piazza San Marco.

Da tempo rappresenta l’appuntamento sportivo più seguito e popolare della città dove migliaia di partecipanti afronteranno la gara in varie versioni, da quel la classica di 42 chilometri a quella ridotta e non competitiva di 10. D.R.

OCTOBER WITH ART, MUSIC AND SPORT

Continuing in the month of October is one of the most sought-after sea sons by international tourism. Once the buzz, as well as the rush, of the great September events has wound down, Venice returns to offer its sim plest things ... the unparalleled views along canals and fondamenta/walking banks, the enchanted nighttime atmosphere, the sweetness of the lagoon landscapes, the magnificence of its architecture that time and man have been able to merge into absolute masterpieces. Therefore, visitors of the city would not need any advice other than to let themselves wander about freely.

Here are some ideas on the main events of the month anyway, for the rest, as always, we refer to the following pages.

The Biennale Art

It is an absolute must as far as the exhibition scene is concerned, at least regarding the contemporary.

The International Art Exhibition - this is the official denomination - represents a fundamentally not-to-be-missed opportunity for all art lovers and not just for them. The spectacular nature of its installations and the venues that hold them, as well as the intrinsic value of the works, affect not only the traditional spaces of the Giardini of Castello and the Arsenal, but the whole city, where National Participations and collateral events are scattered.

The theme of the exhibition, launched this year by curator Cecilia Alemani, collects various forms of artistic research that explore the worlds of dreams, the fantastic, the esoteric but also current topics such as ecology and the social.

The art exhibitions.

They stand beside the Biennale and have always represented one of the added values of the cities’ artistic heritage.

Among these, we remember the engaging display by the German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer, created for the Doge’s Palace and presented by the Civic Museums; that of the British master Anish Kapoor which pre sents the entire visionary range of the artist in the venues of the Accademia Galleries and Palazzo Manfrin (until 9 October). Also regarding the contem porary are the exhibition dedicated to Marlene Dumas by Palazzo Grassi and the one aimed at the American performance artist Bruce Neuman, also presented by the Pinault Foundation, but at Punta della Dogana.

The exhibition scene then carries on, among others, with the exhibitions on Afro Basaldella, at Ca ‘Pesaro; Rainer-Vedova, at the Magazzini del Sale; Joseph Beuys at Palazzo Cini; Antoni Clavé at Palazzo Franchetti; Murillo at the Scuola della Misericordia; Danh Vo, Isamu Noguchi, Park Seo-Bo, at the Querini Stampalia Foundation; Personal Structures at Palazzo Bembo and Palazzo Mora. Concerning photography, we point out the retrospective on Sabine Weiss at the Casa dei TreOci, and, in regards to the art of glass, the exhibition dedicated to Venini (Luce 1921-1985) at the Stanze del Vetro and those promoted by the Berengo Foundation: Ai Weiwei, at the Church of San Giorgio; Tony Cragg, at the Glass Museum; Glasstress at the Beren go Art Space.

Finally, we recall two interesting exhibitions dedicated to the potential of the human mind: A World of Potential set up at the Procuratie Vecchie and Human Brains at Ca'Corner della regina.

Music and Theater.

Attending a concert in Venice has a double value: hearing music, generally of quality, and experiencing places that exude history and art. In this regard,

we point out the cycle dedicated to the French composer Jules Massenet (18421912) at Palazzetto Bru Zane; the Galuppi Festival, the Mythical Baroque and Lo Squero Concert cycles.

Opera and prose are also presented by the billboards of the two historic theaters in the city: La Fenice and the Stabile del Veneto Carlo Goldoni. Mozart’s first opera Apollo et Hyacintus (performed at the Malibran Theater) is expected in the month; La Fille du Régiment by Donizetti at La Fenice and for the new season of Goldoni Le Vertige Marilyn, with Isabelle Adjani.

The sport events. Let’s close with three spectacular events, different in structure and character but with a common passion and scenic context. An astonishing effect is guaranteed for everyone, both participants and spectators.

- Venice Hospitality Challenge, a real Grand Prix on the water reserved for maxiyachts. Presented by Yacht Club Venezia, it will be on show Saturday 15 October on the waters in front of the St. Mark basin and the Giudecca Canal. Each ship will represent one of the most prestigious hotels in Venice through a color.

- Veleziana, non-competitive regatta, ideal closing party of the Venetian sailing season. Presented by the historic ultra-centenary Compagnia della Vela, it will be scheduled on the third Sunday of the month as is tradition, this year on 16 October. The route will start from the Lido harbor mouth and, passing through part of the lagoon, will reach the heart of the St. Mark Basin. This will be its fifteenth edition.

- VeniceMarathon, one of the most spectacular Italian marathons, for many years now among the most prestigious international competitions of the discipline. Now in its 36th edition, it stands out for the magnificence of the route that from the Villa Reale of Stra will accompany the athletes, along the Riviera del Brenta up to St. Mark’s Square. It has long been the most followed and popular sporting event in the city, where thousands of participants will face the race in various versions, from the classic one of 42 kilometers to the shorter and non-competitive one of 10.

Closing the 2021-2022 Opera Season, La Fenice Thea tre will offer a new staging of Gaetano Donizetti’s op era, considered one of the best opera comedies of all time. Nello storico campo del Ghetto, nel quartie re ebraico a Cannaregio, si trova il museo che conserva il ricordo e la storia della comunità ebraica a Venezia. Attualmente chiuso per la vori di restauro, ofre nel periodo la possibilità di una visita guidata, dalla domenica al giovedì, alla cinquecentesca Scola Levantina e alla Sco la Spagnola, e al venerdì alla Scola Levantina e al midrash Luzzatto.

This museum preserving the memory and history of the Jewish community in Venice is located in the his toric and evocative Ghetto Square in the Jewish dis trict of Venice. Currently closed due to restoration work, it offers the possibility of a guided tour, from Sunday to Thursday, at the sixteenth-century Scola Le vantina and Scola Spagnola, and on Friday at the Scola Levantina and the Luzzatto midrash.

The tours will take place in Italian at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm and in English at 11am, 12 noon, 2, 3 and 4.30pm.

"Il latte dei sogni".

Promossa dalla Biennale di Venezia e curata da Cecilia Alemani, la grande rassegna internaziona le dedicata all’arte contemporanea si delineerà nel 2022 attorno a tre aree tematiche: la rappre sentazione dei corpi e le loro metamorfosi; la re lazione tra individui e tecnologie; i legami che si intrecciano tra i corpi e la Terra.

La mostra, sviluppata tra il padiglione centrale ai Giardini e gli spazi dell'Arsenale sarà afancata dalle 80 Partecipazioni Nazionali disposte tra gli storici padiglioni e varie sedi in città.

Aperta al pubblico presso le Stanze del Vetro, nell’isola di San Giorgio e inserita nel ciclo dedi cato alla storia della celebre vetreria Venini, que sta nuova esposizione intende raccontare l’attività della celebre fornace nel campo dell’illuminazio ne, dalla piccola alla grande scala, mostrandone alcuni degli esempi più rappresentativi.

In occasione della mostra, verrà riallestito il cele bre “Velario” realizzato per la copertura di Palazzo Grassi e, come omaggio a Carlo Scarpa, la rico struzione del grande lampadario a poliedri pro gettato dall’architetto per “Italia 61”.

“The milk of dreams”

Promoted by the Venice Biennale and curated by Cecilia Alemani, this great international exhibition dedicated to contemporary art will be outlined in 2022 around three thematic areas: an illustration of bodies and their metamorphoses; the relationship between individuals and technologies; the intertwining bonds between bodies and Earth.

The central exhibition, structured between the central pavilion at the Giardini and the spaces at the Arsenal, will be flanked by the 80 Nation al Participations located amongst the historic pavilions and sundry venues in town.

The showcase is accompanied by 31 Collateral Events promoted by national and international bodies and institutions (see pages 38, 39).

• VENINI: Light 1921 - 1985.

Open to the public at the Stanze del Vetro, on the San Giorgio Island, starting on 18 Septem ber and included in the cycle dedicated to the history of the famous Venini glassware, this new exhibition aims to narrate the activity of the fa mous furnace in the field of lighting, from a small to a large scale, by showing some of its most representative examples.

Specifically for this exhibition, the famous “Velar ium” created to cover Palazzo Grassi will be setup again and, as a tribute to Carlo Scarpa, the large polyhedron chandelier designed by the architect for “Italia 61” will be reconstructed.

The exhibition will remain viewable until 8 January 2023.

Dall’Italia all’America e ritorno.

Negli spazi della Galleria Internazionale d’Ar te Moderna di Ca’Pesaro, inserita nell’ambito di MUVE Contemporaneo, questa mostra presenta uno dei grandi protagonisti della pittura italiana del secondo Novecento, Afro Basaldella.

Quarantacinque suoi capolavori, provenienti da collezioni e musei internazionali, rendono omag gio a questo autore, già ben rappresentato dalle collezioni di Ca’ Pesaro, esplorando la relazione che negli anni Cinquanta si è instaurata tra l’arte italiana e quella statunitense e più in particolare dell’Espressionismo astratto e dell’Action pain ting.

La mostra, curata da Udo Kittelmann in dialogo con il comitato scientifco, rappresenterà un ten tativo di tradurre in una forma espositiva immer siva la storia dello studio del pensiero umano e lo stato attuale delle ricerche scientifche.

• A WORLD OF POTENTIAL

Hosted on the third floor at the Old Procuratie, the headquarters of The Human Safety Net, a foundation created by the Generali group with the aim of offering new potential to vulnerable persons, this exhibition, by curator Orna Cohen, is presented as an experiential journey in which visitors are invited into a sequence of experienc es which increase their self-awareness and the perception of the world at the same time.

In the final part, visitors will be able to gather information about the foundation’s activity and to donate half of their ticket cost to one of the programmes (freely chosen) managed by the Foundation itself.

From Italy to America and back. Inside the venues of the International Gallery of Modern Art at Ca’ Pesaro, within the framework of MUVE Contemporaneo, this exhibition is pre senting one of the great protagonists in Italian painting of the second half of the Twentieth cen tury, Afro Basaldella.

Forty-five of his masterpieces, from international collections and museums, pay a tribute to this au thor, already well represented by the collections at Ca’ Pesaro, exploring the relationship which was established in the Fifties between Italian and American art and more specifically that of ab stract Expressionism and Action painting. The exhibition, will remain visible until 23 October 2022.

“Questi scritti, quando verranno bruciati, daranno fnalmente un po’ di luce”.

E’ questa l’esposizione di punta di MuVe Contemporaneo, la rassegna biennale della Fon dazione Musei Civici di Venezia, rifessione sulla relazione tra arte contemporanea e quella con servata nei musei.

La mostra, che prende spunto da un passo di uno scritto del flosofo veneziano Andrea Emo, ha come fulcro il ciclo di dipinti creati tra il 2020 e il 2021 appositamente per Palazzo Ducale, dal pittore e scultore tedesco Anselm Kiefer.

L’installazione si dispiega nello spazio e nella ma gnifcenza della Sala dello Scrutinio, in serrato confronto con le trentatré tele monumentali del softto e dell’intero ciclo decorativo del Palazzo.

La mostra, a carattere retrospettivo, pre senterà i momenti chiave della carriera dell'arti sta accostando ad opere note, un nuovo corpo di lavori recenti ed inediti. Tra questi nuove opere fortemente innovative, create utilizzando la nano tecnologia del carbonio.

It begins with an Idea.

At Ca’ Corner della Regina, the Prada Founda tion’s prestigious Venetian venue, an exhibi tion scheme entirely dedicated to the study of the brain marks the third stage of the “Human Brains” project.

The exhibition, by curator Udo Kittelmann in a di alogue with its scientific committee, features an attempt to translate the history of the study of human thought, and the current state of scientific research, into an immersive exhibition format. Open to the public until 27 November.

• ANSELM KIEFER. “When burnt, these writings will finally provide some light”.

This is the flagship exhibition by MuVe Contem poraneo, the biennial showcase by the Venice City Museums Foundation, a reflection on the re lationship between contemporary art and what is preserved in museums.

The exhibition, which is inspired by an excerpt from a writing by Venetian philosopher Andrea Emo, is centred on the cycle of paintings creat ed between 2020 and 2021 specifically for the Ducal Palace, by German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer.The installation unfolds within the space and magnificence of the Scrutinio Hall, in a pressing comparison with the thirty-three mon umental canvases on the ceiling and the entire decorative cycle at the Palace.

The exhibition will take place until 29 October.

For the occasion of the International Art Exhibi tion by the Biennale, the Galleries of the Acc ademia in Venice are presenting this important exhibition dedicated to the British sculptor of Indian origins.

The exhibition, of a retrospective type, will feature key moments within the artist’s career by combining well-known works with a new corpus of both recent and novel artworks. They include extremely innovative new works, created by em ploying carbon nanotechnology.

The exhibition, visible until 9 October, will be structured between the exhibition areas at the museum and the historic Palazzo Manfrin gal lery in the Cannaregio district of Venice.

Realizzata a mano con oltre duemila pezzi in vetro dai maestri di Murano di Berengo Stu dio rappresenta i temi centrali dell'opera di Ai Weiwei: la natura, la spiritualità e il continuo fascino del mondo contemporaneo.

La personale espone anche una selezione delle opere più signifcative dell’artista e una provocatoria serie di fotografe in bianco e nero ricreate in mattoncini LEGO. Fino al 27 novembre.

Nei suggestivi spazi di Punta della Dogana, la Fondazione Pinault presenta questo inedito per corso dedicato allo scultore, fotografo video e performance-artist statunitense: sono lavori sto rici afancati da un nucleo di opere più recenti, alcune delle quali esposte per la prima volta in Europa.

La mostra rende particolare omaggio ad una se rie di recenti video, a partire dalla rivisitazione di uno dei primi lavori in cui Nauman sperimenta va l’uso delle immagini in movimento: il celebre “Walk with Contrapposto” del 1968.

In the heart of a Palladian church of San Giorgio maggiore the vast hanging sculpture La Comme dia Umana will fnally be unveiled in Venice for the frst time after its public debut earlier this year in Rome.

Handcrafted from over two thousand pieces of Murano glass, the sculptural installation acts as a vivid centrepiece, while a network of weaving roots and unexpected Lego pieces await within the exhibition spaces of the grand monesterial complex.

These strands bring together the central themes of Ai Weiwei's work: nature, spirituality, and the continual fascinations of the contemporary world. Until 27 November.

Over one hundred works by one of the most in fluential artists in the contemporary scene, in a great exhibition tracing at Palazzo Grassi an itinerary centred on pictorial production, with a selection of paintings and drawings starting from 1984, and novel artworks created in the past few years from the Pinault Collection, from interna tional museums and private collections.

Marlene Dumas’s work, concentrating on the depiction of the human figure and its related emotions, draws its inspiration from newspapers, magazines, film-frames or personally shot polaroids.

- Archinto, una serie di inediti lavori dell’artista tedesco Georg Baselitz, composta da 12 tele in serite nelle originarie cornici settecentesche a stucco, dove fno all’800 campeggiavano i ritratti della famiglia Grimani.

Pinault Foundation is presenting this novel cir cuit dedicated to the American sculptor, video photographer and performance artist, inside its suggestive spaces at Punta della Dogana: they are historic artworks, accompanied by a nucleus of more recent works, some of them on display in Europe for the first time.

Two installations located within this Renaissance-style abode once belonging to the Grimani family, stand side by side in an ideal dialogue be tween the ancient and the contemporary in the Doge’s Hall, a reinterpretation of one of the most spectacular and evocative rooms in the building:

- Archinto, a series of previously unseen artworks by German artist Georg Baselitz, featuring 12 canvases set inside the original Eighteenth-century stucco frames where the Grimani family por traits had pride of place up to the 19th century.

- The Flaying of Marsyas, a series of new paint ings created by Mary Weatherford, inspired by Titian’s great masterpiece. Until 27 November.

Una quarantina di opere alcune delle quali totalmente inedite presentano al museo del Vetro di Murano lo scul tore britannico noto per la capacità di comunicare con il vetro.

L’allestimento ripercorre le tappe più signifcative del percorso creativo dell’artista e comprende anche sei noti assemblages, lavori di grandi di mensioni dove Cragg accosta oggetti e accumula piccoli gruppi di cose. Seventh edition for this successful exhibition, a celebration of the creative potential of glass within contemporary art. The exhibition traces the most significant stag es of the English artist's prestigious career and includes six well-known assemblages, large-scale works in which everyday objects are juxtaposed and brought together.

Presentata dal Museo d’Arte Orientale di Venezia questa raccolta ofre una panoramica sulla produzione delle manifatture delle antiche forna ci di Yaozhou, attive tra l’VIII e il XIII secolo in Cina settentrionale.

Esposte un centinaio di opere caratterizzate dal la presenza di vivaci motivi decorativi intagliati o impressi sotto un rivestimento trasparente color oliva riconosciuto con il nome di celadon.

Yaozhou Ceramics from the Shang Shan Tang Collection. Presented by the Oriental Art Museum of Venice, this collection ofers an overview on the ware production of the ancient kilns of Yaozhou, active between the eighth and thirteenth centu ries in northern China.

About one hundred works are on display, charac terized by the presence of lively decorative motifs engraved or imprinted under a transparent olive-coloured coating recognisable by the name of celadon. The exhibition in collaboration with Cà Foscari University will be visible to the public until 23 October.

La poesia dell’istante.

Prosegue alla Casa dei TreOci, spazio veneziano dedicato alla fotografa nell’isola della Giudecca, il ciclo di mostre dedicato ai grandi della foto grafa internazionale.

Fino al 23 ottobre sarà di scena una delle più importanti rappresentanti del movimento foto grafco umanista francese, di recente scomparsa, Sabine Weiss, unica fotografa donna del dopo guerra ad aver esercitato questa professione così a lungo e in tutti i campi della fotografa dai re portage ai ritratti di artisti, dalla moda agli scatti di strada, fno ai numerosi viaggi per il mondo. L’e sposizione, primo e più importante tributo alla sua carriera, presenterà oltre 200 fotografe.

Lo spirito del guerriero.

A distanza dall’importante presenza alla Bien nale Arte del 1984 ottenuta con l’assegnazione dell’intero padiglione spagnolo, Antoni Clavé (Barcellona, 1913 Saint-Tropez, 2005) torna pro tagonista a Venezia con questa importante ras segna a Palazzo Franchetti.

La mostra, visibile fno al 23 ottobre, si compone di una cinquantina di opere tra dipinti e scultu re anche di grandi dimensioni, selezionate tra il 1958 e gli anni 90, per esplorare uno dei temi più cari all’artista: quello dei guerrieri.

Promoted by the Emilio and Annabianca Vedova Foundation, and laid out in the exhibition venues at the Magazzino del Sale and at the Spazio Vedova, this exhibition reveals the meeting point between the artwork of two great protagonists in post-World War II European artistic research: Arnulf Rainer and Emilio Vedova. Despite differences in their generations and ed ucations, the two artists were linked by a long standing friendship, and shared a similar concept about the artistic experience, conceived as being in responsible contact with the events in one’s era. • SAVERIO TONOLI. Tinture - Dyes. Placed within the Stanza del Camino in the Clois ter of SS. Cosma e Damiano on the Giudecca Island, this exhibition presents some works by this artist, who trained in Italy and now lives in Berlin. Distinguishable by a very personal tech nique, in his most recent works Saverio Tonoli blends the experience of Western colour with the tradition of paper, refined during some vis its in Asia, by working on large vertical and hori zontal surfaces.

Winner of the Turner Prize 2019, the Co lombian-born artist introduces himself to Venice, on the premises of the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, with an ex hibition plan thought specifcally for the lagoon city.

The work is presented as a large-scale installation that includes a new series of paintings and a wide selection of canvas es taken from the interactive Frequencies series, a long-term collaborative project that involves students from all over the world. The display is accompanied by a program of live events within the exhibition path curated by SAV VY Contemporary.

Nell’ambito del ciclo espositivo 2022 di Ocean Space, TBA21 Academy presen ta due nuove commissioni che prendono spunto da vicende coloniali le cui narrazioni intrecciano passato, presente e futuro: in terpreti della ricerca, l’artista sudafricana Dineo Seshee Bopape e l’artista portoghe se Diana Policarpo.

A raccontare le storie sono microrganismi, alghe, rocce, elementi che coesistono sin dagli inizi dell’evoluzione e che conservano i ricordi e la sostanza delle azioni passate che hanno compromesso la vita in diversi modi. Poetry of the instant.

This cycle of exhibitions dedicated to top interna tional photographers is ongoing at the Casa dei TreOci, the Venetian venue dedicated to pho tography on the island of the Giudecca.

Until 23 October, the limelight will be on Sabine Weiss, one of the most important exponents of the French humanist photography movement, who recently passed away, the only post-war female photographer to have practiced this profession for such a long a period, and in all fields of photography - from reportages to artists' portraits, from fashion to street-shots, up to her many journeys around the world. The exhibition, the first and most important tribute to her ca reer, is presenting over 200 photographs.

• THE SOUL EXPANDING OCEAN

#3: Dineo S. Bopape & #4: Diana Policarpo.

As part of the 2022 exhibition cycle for Ocean Space, TBA21 Academy is presenting two new rendez-vous inspired by colonial events whose narratives intertwine past, present and future: the research illustrators are South African artist Dineo Seshee Bopape and Portuguese artist Di ana Policarpo.

These two installations recount their tales through certain natural elements from sea and from land, which preserve the memories and the substance of past actions that have compro mised their life in differing ways.

Organizzata e fnanziata dalla Fondazione Vene tian Heritage, in collaborazione con la Direzione regionale Musei Veneto questa esposizione si presenta come la prima grande mostra venezia na dedicata alla scultura veneta. Allestita (fno al 30 ottobre) al piano nobile della prestigiosa Galleria Giorgio Franchetti, alla Ca’d’Oro, la mo stra è incentrata sul dialogo tra opere di maestri che hanno lavorato a Venezia e nei territori della Repubblica tra il XV e il XVII secolo proponendo, oltre a opere già note al grande pubblico, alcune sculture mai viste in contesti museali.

Questa mostra presentata negli spazi del Museo nazionale Archeologico, nel complesso dei Mu sei di Piazza San Marco, segna il nuovo capitolo del progetto decennale History Paintings che l’artista rivolge a rifessioni sulla società passata e presente toccando grandi temi sociali. La mostra visibile fno al 23 ottobre, presenta 48 nuovi dipinti e una grande scultura chiamata “Ste le” posta tra antiche sculture classiche di epoca greco-romana. Nell’occasione il museo celebra la riapertura dello storico ingresso (gratuito) dalla Piazzetta San Marco (n.17) dopo oltre vent'anni di chiusura al pubblico.

Una personale nella sede della nota fondazione francese presenta una inedita serie di immagini del fotografo sud-coreano focalizzate sulla città di Venezia. • FROM DONATELLO TO ALESSANDRO VITTORIA, 1450 - 1600. 150 years of sculpture in the Republic of Venice. Organised and fnanced by the Venetian Herit age Foundation, in collaboration with the Veneto Museums regional Directorate, this display is pre sented as the frst major Venetian exhibition ded icated to Veneto sculpture. Set up (until 30 October) on the main foor of the prestigious Giorgio Franchetti Gallery at the Ca’d’Oro, the exhibition focuses on a dialogue between artworks by masters who worked in Venice and in its Republic’s territories between the 15th and 17th centuries, by displaying certain sculptures never previously viewed within museum contexts in addition to works already known to the general public.

• ANTONI CLAVÉ. The warrior’s spirit. Following his important presence at the 1984 Art Biennale, granted with the allocation of the entire Spanish pavilion, Antoni Clavé (Barcelona, 1913 – Saint-Tropez, 2005) is back as a protago nist in Venice with this important exhibition at Palazzo Franchetti. The exhibition, visible until 23 October, consists of about fifty artworks among paintings and sculptures, also in large formats, selected be tween 1958 and the 90s, for exploring one of the artist’s favourite themes: warriors.

• PETER PAN. The need for dreams. • HUONG DODINH. Ascension. Ospitata nella Sala delle Quattro Porte e inserita nel percorso del Museo Correr è questa la prima mostra italiana dell’artista di origine vietnamita residente da molti anni a Parigi.

Si tratta di un’installazione creata e progettata per l’occasione composta da 14 dipinti, alti cia scuno tre metri, collocati in un mistico connubio tra antico e moderno attorno alla scultura lignea della “Madonna della Misericordia”, opera risa lente al XV secolo.

La mostra, inserita nel percorso di MuVe Contemporaneo, percorso espositivo promosso dai Musei Civici di Venezia in occasione di Biennale Arte, resterà visibile negli spazi del museo fno al 6 novembre 2022.

• SAVERIO TONOLI. Tinture - Dyes. Inserita negli spazi della Stanza del Camino nel Chiostro di SS. Cosma e Damiano nell’isola della Giudecca, questa mostra presenta alcuni lavori di questo artista formatosi in Italia e residente a Berlino.

Distinto da una tecnica personalissima Saverio Tonoli fonde nei suoi lavori più recenti l’esperien za del colore occidentale con la tradizione della carta, rafnata durante alcune residenze in Asia, lavorando su ampie superfci verticali e orizzontali. La mostra che si inserisce in un progetto espositi vo nato nel 2021 nella sede di Palazzetto Tito sarà visibile fno al 6 novembre.

Ascension. Hosted within the Quattro Porte Hall and included in the Correr Museum circuit, it is the frst Italian exhibition for this long-time Par is-resident artist born in Vietnam. It features an installation created and designed for this occasion, con sisting of 14 paintings each three metres high, placed in a mystical blending between ancient and mod ern around the wooden sculpture of the “Madonna of Mercy”, a work dating back to the 15th century. This exhibition, included amongst the collateral events of the 59th Biennale Art Exhibition, is pre senting an accurate selection of artworks (about twenty) created by the Korean master throughout his career, inside the venues of Palazzetto Tito, the headquarters of the Bevilacqua la Masa Foundation. Promoted by Kukje Art and Culture Foundation, the exhibition is curated by Sunjung Kim. Until 27 November.

This exhibition, presented in the venues at the National Archaeological Museum within the Saint Mark’s Square Museums complex, is mark ing a new chapter in the decade-old History Paintings project addressed by the artist to refections upon past and present society, touching on major social issues. • THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL VENICE FILM FESTIVAL, FROM THE VENICE BIENNALE ARCHIVES.

Set up in the halls at the Portego of Ca’ Giustinian palace, the headquarters of the Venice Bien nale, this exhibition illustrates and documents the very frst edition of the famous flm festival, which took place from 6 to 21 August 1932 on the terrace at the Excelsior Hotel on the Lido of Venice island, under its name of International Exhibition of Cinematographic Art.

Among the items on display - preserved at the Biennale Historical Archives since 1932 - are original programme posters and playbills, pho tos from the sets of screened flms and from topical events within the context of the Lido at that time.

Stra, Brenta Riviera - Venice: Sunday 23 October. 36th edition of one of the most established Ital ian marathons.

The race itinerary, which will depart from the splendid framing of the (formerly royal) Villa Pisani at Stra, will wind along the suggestive Brenta Riviera, the centres of Marghera and Mes tre and the Park of San Giuliano, reaching Venice along the Ponte della Libertà.

Here athletes will run on the Zattere quaysides (alongside the Giudecca Canal), reaching Punta della Dogana, where they will cross the Grand Canal over a purposely-built floating bridge.

Going by Saint Mark’s Square, the track will reach the finishing line set at the Riva Sette Martiri.

The programme also features various collateral events including the VM10K, a non-competitive race open to all in the final 10 kms of the mara thon, starting from San Giuliano Park and arriving in Riva Sette Martiri.

The initiatives also include the VM Charity Program, a programme supporting projects and ac tivities aimed at solidarity.

Few cities in Italy (and in Europe) may boast a museum scenario like this city’s. Set inside fine palaces and ancient abodes within a radius of a few hundred metres, they are an integral part of the huge cultural heritage the city assimilated over its centuries of history.

But how to choose a museum, or museums, to most attract one’s curiosity and desire for knowledge? Here in brief, is how to find your way around. Information in detail follows instead about the major ones.

City Museums

Managed by the Venice City Museums Foundation known by its acronym MUVE, they represent a part of the city’s huge cultural heritage, with over 700,000 artworks. Eleven museums in total, run by a single body, boosted by MUVE also with notable art exhibitions. They include the Ducal Palace, the Correr, Ca’Pesaro, Ca’Rezzonico… Entry to such venues is by a single ticket, or the “Museum Pass” circuit system, or the “Saint Mark’s Museums” integrated circuit.

State Museums

Five in town and three in Venetian territory, these museums managed by the Ministry of CultureRegional Directorate for Museums - are part of a museum system featuring some of the area’s top museums, including the Galleries of the Accademia and the Giorgio Franchetti Gallery in Venice among others, and Villa Pisani in Stra along the Brenta Riviera.

Other museums

This section lists privately-managed museums or ones run by individual Foundations. We may here mention for importance the Peggy Guggenheim Collection; the Querini Stampalia Picture-Gallery; the Palazzo Cini collections.

Churches, Devotion Schools and religious museums

Churches and devotion schools, the latter being ancient town guilds, are also part of the city’s museum heritage. Among them, for importance, we find the basilica of Saint Mark at the very top with its precious museum, the monumental basilicas of the Frari and of Saints Giovanni & Paolo; the Scuole Grandi of San Rocco, San Giovanni Evange lista, the Carmini, San Giorgio dei Greci, true art coffers; plus the Jewish and the Hellenic ones among the museums.

The Museums spread over the Venetian hinterland territory are many, and important. In addition there are the Veneto villas, exceptional examples of harmony amid architecture, art and landscape. As with the museums, this scenario is also quite vast. We are (unfortunately) mention ing just a part.

The museum offers a compelling tour of Venetian history and art. Quest’anno ricorre il 150° anniversario dalla morte dell’esploratore, musicologo, geografo, etnogra fo, collezionista e patriota italiano Giovanni Miani (1810 1872).

Miani visitò le capitali e le università europee per approfondire gli studi scientifici e la ricerca musi cologica con l’intento di redigere un’enciclopedia della musica mondiale. Venne imprigionato ed esiliato per aver preso parte ai moti rivoluzionari del 1848. È famoso per essere stato tra i primi a intraprendere spedizioni nel 1859 e nel 1861 alla scoperta della sorgente del Nilo. Lungo il suo cammino raccolse 1800 manufatti: armi, stru menti musicali, tessuti, utensili di uso quotidiano appartenenti a vari gruppi etnici di grande finezza e che Miani donò alla città di Venezia. La Bibliote ca del Museo ospita le mappe, gli archivi e i suoi diari, che furono parzialmente pubblicati nel 1865. Durante il periodo di rivalità tra le nazioni euro pee per l’egemonia sui nuovi territori dell’Africa subsahariana ancora inesplorati, Miani ottenne il sostegno di Napoleone III per la sua prima spe dizione. Nonostante i terribili disagi, le malattie, i compagni di viaggio inaffidabili e pericolosi, rac colse oggetti e informazioni di eccezionale valo re scientifico ed etnografico. Forse il reperto più noto è la mummia di una sacerdotessa dei coc codrilli. GIOVANNI MIANI’S ROOM IN THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF VENICE.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the death of explorer, musicologist, geographer, eth nographer, collectionist and Italian patriot Giovanni Miani (1810 – 1872).

Miani led a peripatetic life. He travelled through Europe’s capitals and universities developing his cultural and scientific interests and was an early exponent of musicology. Miani was imprisoned for taking part in the Revolution of 1848 and then exiled. He is famous for leading early ex peditions in search for the source of the Nile in 1859 and 1861 during which he amassed 1800 artifacts: weapons, musical instruments and every day utensils of various ethnic groups along his way. Miani bestowed these on the city of Venice. The Library of the Museum houses Miani’s dia ries and archives including maps which were first published in 1865. Miani endeavoured to draft a Universal Encyclopedia of World Music on his ex peditions up the Nile.

During a time of European rivalry over new territo ries in uncharted sub-Saharan Africa Miani found patronage from Napoleon III. Despite the terrible hardships and disease, unreliable and dangerous companions, he garnered items and information of exceptional scientific and ethnographic value. Perhaps the most famous is the Mummy Priest ess of Crocodiles, but also exquisitely crafted arms, musical instruments, clothing and everyday items. Miani gave detailed descriptions about their design and how people used them. His di aries describe the musical instruments and their sounds, how they are played and when.

GETTING TO VENICE

Venice is an island-city, or rather, it is a city made up of a multitude of tiny islands (about 110): a configuration that is practically unique in the world. Accessing it would thus seem complex. But this is not the case. Venice maintains an “umbilical cord” with the world, or rather with the mainland (as the Venetians call everything off the island). It is the Libertà Bridge, once called Littorio from its construction period, the 1930s. However, its origin is earlier and dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, precisely to 1846, the inauguration date of the Milan-Venice railway line. Since then, the city not only became accessible by water but also by land… it would be the turning point of an era. But here are the main access points to the city today, in brief.

I TERMINAL - GLI ACCESSI VIA TERRA

PIAZZALE ROMA

E’ lo storico terminal automobilistico di Venezia dove spiccano le due grandi autorimesse pubbli che: il Garage San Marco e il Garage Comunale AVM (quest’ultimo con un’area predisposta anche alle biciclette).

Il vasto Piazzale, di recente collegato da un moder no ponte pedonale alla Stazione ferroviaria (il ponte della Costituzione), fa attualmente da riferimento al servizio di collegamento urbano ed extraurbano con la terraferma.

Da qui arrivano e si diramano le corse dei servizi pubblici (Actv e Atvo) e privati (taxi) che collegano Venezia alla città metropolitana e ai due aeroporti, quello di Tessera e di Treviso.

Un servizio su monorotaia (People Mover) collega inoltre Piazzale Roma all’isola del Tronchetto.

L’ISOLA DEL TRONCHETTO

Allacciata da una “bretella” al ponte automobilisti co, ospita il Venezia Tronchetto Parking (uno dei più grandi garage in Europa) dove possono tro vare posto quasi 4000 mezzi compresi camper e motociclette.

Al suo esterno, a pochi metri, si trovano gli imbarca deri dai quali si dipartono le linee del servizio pub blico Actv (Linea 2) e privato per il cuore della città. Una linea speciale denominata People Moover collega in pochi minuti l’isola al terminal automo bilistico di Piazzale Roma.

L’isola ospita inoltre un porticciolo e il casello di accesso al servizio di Ferry-boat della linea 17 di Actv che collega il Tronchetto alle isole del Lido e di Pellestrina.

LA STAZIONE FERROVIARIA DI SANTA LUCIA

Situata in posizione ideale, questa primaria porta di accesso alla città, posta al termine del ponte della Libertà si affaccia all’ultimo lembo del Canal Grande.

Qui sono disposti gli imbarcaderi da dove si dira mano le principali linee Actv per la città e le isole: la linea 1 (tutte le fermate) e 2 (diretta) per il Canal Grande e il Canale della Giudecca; la 4.1 e 4.2; 5.1 e 5.2 (circolari) per laguna nord e Murano).

Alla stazione di recente ammodernata e ampliata con servizi e centri commerciali, arrivano tutte le linee veloci che collegano Venezia alle principali città italiane ed europee.

TERMINALS - ACCESS VIA LAND

PIAZZALE ROMA

It is the historic car terminal in Venice, where two big public garages stand out: the San Marco Garage and the AVM Municipal Garage (the latter also has an area for bicycles).

This large Square, linked recently to the railway station by a modern pedestrian bridge (the Costituzione Bridge), is currently the hub for urban and extra-urban connection services with the mainland.

Public (Actv and Atvo) and private (taxis) ser vices arrive and go from here, connecting Venice to its metropolitan city and the two airports of Tessèra and Treviso.

A monorail service (People Mover) also connects Piazzale Roma to the Tronchetto island.

THE TRONCHETTO ISLAND

Connected to the automobile bridge by a flyo ver, it houses the Venezia Tronchetto Parking (one of the largest garages in Europe), where almost 4000 vehicles may be accommodated, including camper vans and motorcycles. Outside, a few metres away, are the boat-stops from where public ACTV service (Line 2) and private lines depart for the heart of the city.

A special train line called People Mover links this island to the Piazzale Roma cars terminal in just a few minutes.

The island also hosts a small port and toll-booth for boarding the Actv Ferry-boat line 17 service, linking Tronchetto to the Lido and Pellestrina islands.

THE SANTA LUCIA RAILWAY STATION

Ideally located, this primary gateway to the city at the end of the Libertà Bridge overlooks the last stretch of the Grand Canal. Here are the boat stops from where the main ACTV lines lead to the city and the islands: lines 1 (all stops) and 2 (direct) for the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal; n. 4.1 and 4.2; 5.1 and 5.2 (circle) for the northern lagoon and Murano. All the rapid lines connecting Venice to the main Italian and European cities arrive at this station, recently modernised and enlarged with services and shopping hubs.

Posto ai lembi della laguna nord di Venezia, a circa 13 chilometri dalla città è oggi il terzo aero porto per numero di passeggeri in Italia.

Gestito dalla società Save e ampliato nel 2017 è oggi dotato di una vasta area di servizi, oltre che di parcheggi e collegamenti con mezzi pubblici sia via terra che via acqua gestiti rispettivamente dalle compagnie Atvo (con un servizio Shuttle su Piazzale Roma) e Alilaguna con motoscafi diretti sul centro città e le isole.

Vi operano numerose compagnie aeree con una folta rete di voli nazionali e internazionali.

AEROPORTO ANTONIO CANOVA - TREVISO

Nato come scalo per voli charter e cargo l’aero porto di Treviso grazie ad importanti investimenti che hanno di recente ampliato pista ed aerosta zione è a tutti gli effetti tra i maggiori aeroporti della regione Veneto.

Posto a pochi chilometri dalla città di Treviso e circa a trenta dalla città di Venezia oggi fa da base ad una delle massime compagnie inter nazionali Low Cost. Gestito dalla stessa società dell’aeroporto veneziano è collegato con la città tramite la linea Shuttle di Atvo.

MARCO POLO AIRPORT - VENICE

Located on the edge of Venice’s northern lagoon, about 13 kilometres from town, today it is the third airport in terms of passenger numbers in Italy. Managed by the Save company and expanded in 2017, it is now equipped with a vast services area, as well as parking and public transport links both by land and by water, man aged respectively by Atvo (with a Shuttle service to Piazzale Roma), and Alilaguna with direct motor-launches to the city centre and its islands. Several airlines operate there, with a large net work of national and international flights.

ANTONIO CANOVA AIRPORT - TREVISO

Born as a hub for charter and cargo flights, thanks to major investments which have recently expanded its runway and terminal Treviso airport is effectively one of the major airports in the Veneto region.

Located a few kilometres from the city of Treviso and about thirty from the city of Venice, today it is a base for one of the leading international Low Cost companies. Managed by the same company as the Venetian airport, it is connected to the city by an Atvo Shuttle busline.

NICELLI AIRPORT - LIDO OF VENICE

Tra i più suggestivi aeroporti italiani, esempio perfettamente conservato di architettura degli anni Trenta, l’aeroporto Nicelli è noto come il più antico scalo commerciale italiano, e considerato da una speciale classifica, tra le più belle superfi ci aeroportuali al mondo. La sua pista in erba fa oggi da scalo ad elicotteri e piccoli aerei charter e privati con motori ad elica. Posto in un’estremità dell’isola del Lido è rag giungibile via acqua con linee private o il servizio ferry-boat della linea 17 Actv.

One of the most evocative Italian airports, a per fectly preserved example of 1930s architecture, the Nicelli airport is known as the oldest Italian commercial airport, and deemed by a special ranking to be one of the most beautiful airport areas worldwide. Its grass runway is now a hub for helicopters and small charter and private planes with propeller engines.

IL SERVIZIO DI TRASPORTO PUBBLICO

E’ l’Azienda del Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano.

La sua fotta di imbarcazioni raggiunge ogni punto della città, comprese le isole maggiori.

Autobus e tram collegano invece il terminal di Piazzale Roma alla città metropolitana.

Una linea speciale, la 17, collega invece con una spola di ferry-boat il Terminal automobilistico del Tronchetto, all’isola del Lido e, a proseguire, quel la di Pellestrina.

Dal 2020 ACTV sta investendo sul trasporto “gre en” puntando ad inserire lungo la principale via d’acqua della città, il Canal Grande, i primi mezzi a propulsione elettrica eliminando così sia l’inqui namento acustico che quello dell’aria, favorendo allo stesso tempo, la riduzione del moto ondoso.

La compagnia nasce come servizio di collega mento acqueo tra l’Aeroporto Marco Polo e i punti focali della città: i terminal del Tronchetto, di Piaz zale Roma e della Stazione, le zone di San Marco e di Rialto, le isole della Giudecca, del Lido e di Mu rano. MOVING IN VENICE

The opportunities for getting around and discov ering Venice are many.

A first choice, maybe the best, is no doubtthanks to its short distances - to move on foot. But sometimes, due to lack of time, heavy lug gage and, last but not least, the physical impossibility of crossing the lagoon, it is comfortable, as well as pleasant from a scenic point of view, to board a transport vehicle.

There are no buses, no metro, no car-taxis in the lagoon city… nor bicycles. Thus, public transport boats are vaporetti or bat telli (traditionally so called by Venetians of yore) and fast motor-launches, called “lance”, which act as taxis, ending with one of the most iconic vehicles worldwide, which has characterised people’s transport along the city canals for centuries: the gondola.

Here are a few notes for those who, having just arrived in Venice, wish to move around by navigation.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICE

ACTV

It is the Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano Company. Its boat fleet reaches every part of town, includ ing its major islands.

Buses and trams instead link the Piazzale Roma terminal to its metropolitan city.

Special line n. 17 links Tronchetto car-terminal to the Lido island by a ferry-boat shuttle, and further on to Pellestrina island.

Since 2020, ACTV has been investing in “green” transport, aiming at its first electrically-pow ered vehicles along the main city waterway, the Grand Canal, eliminating both noise and air pollution and favouring a wave motion reduction at the same time.

IL TRAGHETTO SU GONDOLE

Non molti visitatori sanno che al servizio turistico oferto dalle classiche gondole, si aggiunge il ser vizio delle cosiddette gondole “da parada”, cioè di quel tipo di gondola dedicata a far da spola da una riva all’altra del Canal Grande. Antica istituzione, la gondola da traghetto è una versione “popolare” della gondola oggi usata per il turismo. Priva di ornamenti e condotta da due rematori, ofre la possibilità decisamente meno costosa - di provare l’ebbrezza di un passaggio a pelo d’acqua lungo la più famosa via d’acqua al mondo.

Il servizio, reso possibile grazie ad un accordo tra il Comune di Venezia e l’Associazione gondolieri, viene svolto tra le due sponde del canale attual mente da cinque stazi (approdi): Dogana, Santa Maria del Giglio, San Tomà, Riva del Carbon, Santa Sofa.Il costo a tratta è di € 2,00 (o.70 con carta Imob).

GONDOLA FERRIES

Not many visitors know that in addition to the tour ist service offered by classic gondolas there is the so-called gondola “da parada” service, that is, a type of gondola used for shuttling from one Grand Canal bank to the other.

An ancient tradition, the gondola-ferry is a “downto-earth” version of the gondolas used nowadays for tourism. With no decorations and guided by two rowers, it offers a - much less expensive - oppor tunity for experiencing the thrill of passage at water-level over the most famous waterway in the world.

This service, made possible thanks to an agreement between the Venice Municipality and the Gondo liers’ Association, is currently carried out between the two banks of the canal from five stazi (stations): Dogana, Santa Maria del Giglio, San Tomà, Riva del Carbon, Santa Sofia: the cost for one-way is 2.00 € (70 cents with an Imob card).

I TAXI ACQUEI

Come avviene in tutte le città quando ci si deve spostare da un punto all’altro nel minor tempo possibile la soluzione migliore è il taxi.

Anche qui il riferimento, lo fanno i rispettivi stazi (stazioni) disposti nei punti nevralgici della città. Il servizio organizzato da più compagnie, avviene su motoscafi veloci chiamati “lance” e contraddi stinti da una fascia orizzontale gialla.

Le tariffe sono, secondo regolamento del Co mune di Venezia, uniche per tutte le società, e il servizio è accessibile presso le stazioni comunali Taxi, o qualsiasi pontile pubblico o privato chia mando lo 041.59.64 (RadioTaxi).

WATER TAXIS

As in all cities, when one has to move from one part to the next in the shortest possible time, the best solution is a taxi.

Here too the hubs are the respective stazi (sta tions) located in crucial parts in town.

This service, organised by several companies, takes place on fast motor-boats called “lance”, marked by a horizontal yellow stripe.

As per Venice Municipality regulations, tariffs are the same for all companies, and service is accessible at the municipal Taxi stations, or at any public or private jetty by calling 041.59.64 (RadioTaxi).

Come detto ci sono vari modi per arrivare in città, tra questi, quello forse più comune è con la propria automobile.

Il numero di emergenza Unico Europeo (NUE)

Oggi in tutta Europa esiste un unico numero di riferimento per l’emergenza: il 112.

Chiunque ne avesse bisogno può con una chia mata, sia da telefono fisso, che cellulare o App, anche se usa una lingua diversa da quella del Paese in cui si trova, spiegare ciò di cui si ha bisogno.

Il sistema è gratuito e mette a disposizione il numero di telefono di chi chiama e la relativa posizione geografica.

Unique European Emergency number (NUE)

Today there is a single reference number throughout Europe for emergencies: 112. Anyone in need may explain what is needed with a call, whether from a landline, mobile phone or App, even using a different language from the country one is in. The system is free and provides the caller’s telephone number and relative geographical location.

Le Farmacie

La polizia di Stato e l’Arma dei Carabinieri

Sono i due corpi di sicurezza dello Stato. Riferi mento primario, per smarrimento di documenti e denunce di furto. First Aid

A focal hub in town is at the Venice Civil Hospital located in the Castello district in Campo SS. Giovanni and Paolo. Open 24/24, it is equipped with a fast motor-launch service (water-ambu lances) for reaching any part in town quickly. Its number is 112.

Tourist First Aid Hub

In case of need, illness or medical information, a first aid service is active at the HealthVenice clinics in Saint Mark’s Square (Procuratie Nuove 63/65) and in Piazzale Roma (Santa Croce 496). This service works every day, including holidays, from 8am to 8pm.

Fire Brigade

As everyone knows, Venice is founded on water, but its structure is made of stone and wood. This is its vulnerability, highlighted by disastrous fires over the centuries, most recently the one at La Fenice Theatre (1996). Hence the importance of this corps, located near the Rio di Ca’Foscari (Dorsoduro 3862). Its number is 112.

Municipal Police

Also called local police, it is the first reference point for public safety, emergency response and surveillance for citizens and tourists. The Corps is also responsible for waterway and pedestrian circulation. Its operative centre at the Municipal ity headquarters in Ca’ Farsetti may be contacted 24/24 on 041 274 70 70.

State police and the Carabinieri Corps

They are the two State security corps. The primary contact for document loss and theft reports.
