When you visit Red Butte Garden this spring, slow down and take in the spectacular floral display along our entrance drive. That’s where staff and volunteers planted more than 35,000 daffodil and allium bulbs last fall—adding to the already stunning display of color that you’ll experience garden-wide this season. We’re excited for you to see it.

In the meantime, explore a behind-the-scenes look into our greenhouses. This is where staff pour their time, expertise, and hearts into cultivating thousands of plants for you to enjoy every season. Theirs are just a few of the names and faces we highlight in these pages. With this issue, we thank many of the people who help make the Garden everything it is—from new advisory board members and donors, to the 384 volunteers who gifted a whopping 25,000-plus hours of their time last year.

You are a valuable part of our team too. When you renew your membership, buy a concert ticket, or remember us in your will, you help ensure that we have the resources we need to maintain and elevate this incredible community resource. Our goal is to provide a place where everyone can “look and learn, play and rest,” as Dr. Melissa Bentley writes in “Why I Give.”

I hope that you enjoy all the beauty we’ve created together this spring.

We acknowledge that this land, which is named for the Ute Tribe, is the traditional and ancestral homeland of the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute, and Ute Tribes. The University of Utah recognizes and respects the enduring relationship that exists between many Indigenous peoples and their traditional homelands. We respect the sovereign relationship between tribes, states, and the federal government, and we affirm the University of Utah’s commitment to a partnership with Native Nations and Urban Indian communities through research, education, and community outreach activities.

Why I Give

When first invited to share my Red Butte Garden story, my natural shyness led me to hesitate. However, my love for the Garden and belief in its value emboldened me to do whatever I can for its promotion and sustenance. I trained at the School of Medicine at the University of Utah and completed my internal medicine residency here as well. During that time I escaped when I could to jog along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. As I ran along the Foothills, I enjoyed looking down into the beautiful garden beds and terraces, vaguely aware that it was a botanical garden, and marveling at the order and beauty—but rarely if ever did I take the time to go inside.

However, after a time working and living in Ogden, I returned to Salt Lake City. For the last five years , I have had a practice at a clinic downtown, lived in the Yalecrest neighborhood, and been a devoted Garden member. I go to the Garden’s fall and spring plant sales, art and orchid shows, and I take classes. I gradually replaced lawn and annuals in my yard with natives, perennials, trees. I have taken my goddaughter to the absolutely amazing BOOtanical at Halloween; we solved a mystery, wore costumes, and got just a little bit scared.

A highlight for me has been the 101 Plants to Know class with the plant records curator Jason Baker. It was the most peaceful evening of my month, without doubt, and maybe the most fun. I could walk monthly of an evening throughout the Garden areas, learn about plants, and sometimes catch bits of a concert or whiff some savory-sweet aroma from a catered party. I didn’t have to do anything, nothing was expected of me, I could look and learn, play and rest.

I love my work as a physician, but it is demanding, physically, mentally, emotionally. Especially during the pandemic, times and places of such peace have sometimes felt rare, precious. Though for a time the Garden was closed, I was able to take a class online, and fairly quickly the staff implemented a timed entry system. I could, with confidence, schedule a time to go, mask through the Visitor Center, and then be free to experience that peace, to learn, breathe, rest; to just look and smell and see.

Melissa J. Bentley is a physician board-certified in internal and integrative medicine. She is passionate about the care of her patients and our environment, which impacts especially the health of the underserved. She loves rambling the Foothills with her Australian Shepherd, Rockstar.

"Red Butte Garden is invaluable, and it means enough to me that I have listed it as a beneficiary in my trust, in the hopes that its life and beauty will be sustained for generations of plants and people to come."

Legacy Society

Red Butte Garden and Arboretum honors the following individuals who have made a meaningful Legacy Gift, giving a lasting investment and advancing our mission to connect people with plants and the beauty of living landscapes. When you include Red Butte Garden in your estate plan, you ensure the continued growth of the Garden for future generations.

Behind the Glass with the Greenhouse Staff

In midwinter, as Red Butte Garden lies dreaming under a snowy coverlet, our greenhouses are teeming, leafy and lush. The air is heady with the oxygen-rich exhale of thousands of plants getting ready to be seen. Every plant you enjoy at the Garden is cultivated or nurtured here before it’s displayed, whether in the Visitor Center containers that greet you, in the outdoor gardens you wander, or at the spring and fall plant sales, where you can make some of them your own.

Four full-time plant-loving experts lead a team of seasonal workers and volunteers in a production cycle that hums year-round. Every July, horticulture teams start their wish lists for the next bloom season, handing them off in September to their greenhouse colleagues, who start placing seed and plant orders. The coldest months through spring thaw are the busiest. Greenhouse gardeners start annuals from seed germination, plugs, or cuttings, and water, fertilize, and monitor each plant for nutrient deficiencies and pests, guided by a monumental spreadsheet that tracks the needs of every species and cultivar. When the

“Our main goal is to produce plants for the Garden—annuals, vegetables, native plants, shrubs, and perennials. We focus on growing things that you can’t find in local garden centers . . . We have plants from the jungle next to plants from the desert, so it can be a very challenging growing environment. But that makes it a really fun place to work.” —Kara Hastings, greenhouse manager, BS in environmental science, St. Mary's College of Maryland

hort staff plant out the gardens in the spring, they’re already thinking about the next season. So is the greenhouse.

Our gardeners love the challenge of propagating native plants that resist greenhouse coddling, and they take pride in rehabilitating specimens that people gift us for expert TLC. They also care daily for the hundreds of plants in the fifty to sixty containers in and around the Visitor Center and change out those seasonal displays four times a year.

It takes hard work, expertise, attention to detail, state-of-the-art technology. Also, words of encouragement, a curated soundtrack—a lot of indie, a little bluegrass, some country & western, and pop—and a love for making things grow.

Mindy Wilson is director of marketing and public relations.

“I’m excited about the potential of biological controls and beneficial insects—they control pests in ways that are much safer for humans and the environment. If we have the right tools, we can stay one step ahead of the pests, or right with them, and avoid bringing in the big chemicals.” —Ben Gantt, horticulturist, integrated pest management (IPM) specialist, BS in horticulture and greenhouse business production, North Dakota State University

“I design, plant, and oversee the upkeep of all interior displays and planted containers throughout the Garden. I get to utilize all the beautiful, funky plants that our greenhouse team grows and cares for to create displays such as the living wall in the Orangerie or the summer cactus display outside the front entrance. When I’m planting out fresh containers or creating a new interior display, guests often stop to tell me I must have the best job— I always wholeheartedly agree!”

Come Volunteer with Us

If you or someone you know enjoys teaching children, engaging with people, meeting new friends, and spending time in nature, Red Butte Garden is the place for you.

Yes, we do a lot of gardening here, and we also offer guided garden tours, children’s programs, and mission-driven education outreach to young students across the state. In doing so, we rely on volunteers to help our staff fill in the gaps. A nice part about our volunteer program is that no experience or plant knowledge is necessary. We offer hands-on learning and monthly training workshops.

We appreciate our volunteers and offer many great benefits including garden admission and membership. And, best of all, our volunteers love Red Butte Garden and tend to stay with us for years. This year we celebrated the 35th season of our volunteer program and honored one of our founding volunteers from 35 years ago, in addition to six volunteers who hit their 20year milestone, and 35 others who hit their 3-, 5-, and 10-year milestones. We also have 179 volunteers who have served three years or more!

Marketing communications specialist Kate Randall joined the Garden in 2012.

Drop by our Volunteer Fair Open House from 11am-1pm on Saturday, March 9 and meet our volunteer coordinators to learn more, or apply on our website. redbuttegarden.org/volunteer-at-red-butte-garden
