On a recent walk in the Garden, I ran into a group of children who were finishing a school field class with our educators. One little boy jumped up and down, and with a big smile on his face shouted, “I just learned the secrets of life!”
Reactions like that put smiles on our faces too, because we want everyone to appreciate plants as much as we do. As you’ll see throughout this issue, we work hard to create fun and meaningful experiences throughout the Garden’s living landscapes. That includes everything from summer camps and school outreach to personal wellness classes and plant-care workshops.

Garden experiences that generate revenue, including private event rentals and concerts, support our mission and allow us to deliver our education, conservation, and community outreach goals. The next time you attend a wedding in the Fragrance Garden or a night of live music in the Amphitheatre, notice how the spaces are purposely designed to deepen human connections with plant life. And smile, knowing that you’re supporting the important work of expanding our guests’ plant knowledge, inspiring their curiosity, and allowing them to directly experience how nature can improve human lives.
That’s the difference you make by supporting the work we do. Thank you. I hope that you come enjoy our beautiful Garden this summer!
Derrek Hanson, Executive DirectorWe acknowledge that this land, which is named for the Ute Tribe, is the traditional and ancestral homeland of the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute, and Ute Tribes. The University of Utah recognizes and respects the enduring relationship that exists between many Indigenous peoples and their traditional homelands. We respect the sovereign relationship between tribes, states, and the federal government, and we affirm the University of Utah’s commitment to a partnership with Native Nations and Urban Indian communities through research, education, and community outreach activities.
Garden Study Shows Immersion in Nature Benefits the Brain
Dr. Amy McDonnell and Dr. David Strayer of the University of Utah Department of Psychology have been using Red Butte Garden and Arboretum for the last few years to study changes in brain activity associated with walking in nature. The results are promising for those of us who love to stroll outdoors.
Scientists believe that our modern urban environments place high demand on our attentional resources, which can become depleted over time and cause mental fatigue. Natural environments, on the other hand, are thought to provide relief from this demand and allow our attentional resources to be replenished. Results from McDonnell and Strayer’s study suggest that nature walks are not only more restorative than walks in urban environments but that they also enhance attention at a neural level. Urban environments place high demand on attention, causing the prefrontal cortex to be fatigued by overstimulation. By contrast, nature places fewer demands on our attention, allowing the prefrontal cortex to rest and recover.
McDonnell and Strayer are conducting further research to understand who benefits the most from immersion in nature and how these brain-based benefits relate to changes in mood and perceived restoration. They’ve begun a new study at Red Butte Garden exploring the role that digital technology plays in our relationship to nature.
Propagating Hope at Primary Children’s Hospital
by Mindy WilsonYoung patients at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital, Salt Lake Campus, will experience the beauty of plants and the joy of the outdoors thanks to one of Red Butte Garden and Arboretum’s talented and passionate educators.
Garden experience coordinator Becca Speechley recently filmed a short presentation on horticulture for “Songs and Stories,” a monthly educational broadcast that patients watch in their rooms. Speechley demonstrates gardening tools like shovels, pruners, a soil knife, and a watering can, and shares live plants from our greenhouse—an oak seedling to show how an acorn sprouts into a tree and geraniums to demonstrate root systems and propagation. She wraps up by reading aloud Peter Brown’s The Curious Garden, a children’s bestseller that encourages a love of gardening and the environment.
“I tried to convey why I love being in community with plants and nature,” Speechley said. “I shared how spending time caring for plants and being in nature helps me feel more creative and hopeful for the future.”
Hospital music therapist Sara Langenberger said Speechley made an immediate impact on a young patient and her father who watched live during the taping.
“Together they sat right next to the glass of the studio wall, eagerly following along with Becca’s every move. Together they planted seeds, practiced taking cuttings from an existing plant, and learned all about plant propagation,” Langenberger said. “Becca’s incredible teaching skills were only enhanced by her total passion for plant life and nature. That patient and her father left with the biggest smiles on their faces, all thanks to Becca.”
Speechley’s inspiring message will go out to nearly 300 patients every spring throughout the month of March, educating children, and offering encouragement from the Garden, for years to come.
Mindy Wilson is the Garden’s marketing & PR director.
“Becca’s incredible teaching skills were only enhanced by her total passion for plant life and nature. That patient and her father left with the biggest smiles on their faces, all thanks to Becca.”
The Natural Area: Urban Meets Wild
By Neal DombrowskiThe backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains makes Red Butte Garden and Arboretum a unique and truly magical space. The Garden’s 100 acres are located on an urban-wildland interface, an area where development meets undeveloped land. Nearly 80 of these acres are Natural Area, including the Six Bridges Trail and the Meadow, and are maintained by two full-time horticulturists, a team of gardeners, and groups of weekly volunteers. The area features a trail system, more than 250 plant species, and the most scenic panoramic views.
The team’s priorities are to manage the Natural Area for everyone to enjoy. Restoration is a big part of the management, which includes controlling weeds, collecting and distributing seed, and revegetating with native plants, like claret cup cactus, mountain mahogany, sagebrush, bitterbrush, buckwheat, and sumac. The team also maintains trail vegetation and surfaces, as well as the boundary fence line, which protects plant collections from herbivory and bikes. By controlling non-native plant species, we help maintain the diversity of local plants that provide habitat for all things wild, like pollinators, predators, and prey.
The Natural Area offers a good variety of plant habitats to explore, including oak-maple forest, upland meadow, shrubland, and a riparian area in and around Red Butte Creek and Canyon. The urban-wildland interface creates opportunities to view wildlife such as bobcat, coyote, the occasional mountain lion or badger, and many others. Guests will find native wildflowers like mountain bluebells, yellow bells, balsam root, and sego lilies. The most-asked question about the Natural Area is when the sego lilies will bloom, and we have quite the population beginning to bloom in late May-early June.
Next time you visit, wear your hiking shoes, bring your water bottle, and plan to spend some time here. The cultivated gardens are exceptional, and the Natural Area offers a unique experience seeking the state flower along our trails!
Horticulturist Neal Dombrowski has managed the Natural Area for fourteen years. He has a botany degree from Weber State University.

Let’s Unite, Grow, and Bloom with Pride!
By Jason AlbaImmerse yourself in the vibrant colors of nature at Red Butte Garden and Arboretum on June 14 from noon to 8 p.m. for Blooming with Pride. This new family-friendly festival invites the LGBTQIA+ community and allies to unite and celebrate the rich beauty and diversity of the natural world. We invite everyone to join in this exciting new event!
Among the event’s highlights is a showcase of artistic floral and plant displays created by local artists and florists. The seven exhibits on display were selected from more than 45 proposals submitted by artists nationwide. Each exhibit represents the diverse experiences within the LGBTQIA+ community, showcasing that, like plants, love and diversity thrive in all shades and forms.
During the event, guests can also engage in family-friendly activities, including craft projects, on-the-go science experiments, a self-guided nature walk, and free health and wellness classes. The Garden’s Courtyard will also transform into a Unity Hub where guests can connect with local organizations that support and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community.
We invite you to experience this brand-new festival, where love, diversity, and the beauty of nature come together for Blooming with Pride, where plants are for everyone.
Friday, June 14
