BULBS AND TREES AND ARBOR DAY
DROUGHT-TOLERANT TREES AT RED BUTTE GARDEN Abies concolor, White Fir Acer grandidentatum, Bigtooth Maple
In 2003 Red Butte Garden set out on an ambitious program to plant a half a million bulbs throughout the Garden. With the planting of 52,473 bulbs last fall in our Water Conservation Garden, Fragrance Garden, and Martin Wayside at the base of the great wall, we have reached that goal.
Carpinus betulus, European Hornbeam
As more and more bulbs were added over the years, the Garden saw its March and April attendance numbers take a quantum leap—and deservedly so—as a half a million bulbs blooming in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains are a sight to behold. The Garden has marketed this springtime display as “Bulbs and Blooms.” More accurately, we could have called it “Bulbs and Trees in Bloom” as a peak bloom time of the bulbs in April coincides with the blooming of the Garden’s magnolias, crabapples, viburnums, and many other trees and shrubs that create a three-dimensional layering to the springtime display. The peak blooming period for the miniature bulbs in the Rose Garden occurs in March.
Cercocarpus ledifolius, Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany
Lost in statements about Red Butte Garden, such as the one above, is that “Red Butte Garden” is really shorthand for our formal name Red Butte Garden and Arboretum, which reflects that the State of Utah designated the University of Utah campus a State Arboretum in 1961 in recognition of Dr. Walter Cottam’s pioneering work in bringing into Utah horticulture a large number of diverse tree species not previously grown in Utah. That State Arboretum honorific accrued by association to Red Butte Garden and Arboretum when we were founded in 1983. Since that time, Red Butte Garden and Arboretum has worked to live up to the arboretum portion of our name and Dr. Cottam’s legacy by planting a wide variety of trees throughout our property. At present we have 154 species and 219 varieties of trees growing throughout the Garden, including over 30 drought-tolerant species (see sidebar).
Juniperus monosperma, One Seed Juniper
Dr. Cottam's tree planting program followed in the footsteps of an earlier tree planting pioneer, Julius Sterling Morton. Morton brought a passion for trees with him when he left Michigan to settle in what was then a treeless Nebraska Territory. He proposed to the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture that a special day—an arbor day—be set aside for planting trees and to increase awareness of the importance of trees in providing shade, fuel, food, and soil erosion-reducing windbreaks. That first Arbor Day in 1872 saw more than one million trees planted throughout Nebraska. Since that time, the concept of Arbor Day has spread to all 50 of the United States and many countries throughout the world.

Eric Cook, Greenhouse Coordinator, shows a calico plant (Alternanthera ficoidea ‘Party Time’) that will be ready for planting this spring.
A PEEK INSIDE THE GARDEN GREENHOUSE Did you ever wonder how Red Butte Garden is able to create such beautiful displays of blooms and flowers in our outdoor containers, hanging baskets, and indoor plant displays? The answer can be found in our 14,000-square-foot main Greenhouse. Here you will find seedlings, cuttings, and plants in various stages of growth—all timed to reach maturity or bloom according to the specific needs of the Garden. The Greenhouse is also where the full-sized palms, citrus trees, orchids, and other interior plants are maintained when not on display in the Orangerie or Visitor Center. Each year as the seasonal display designs are approved by the Garden Horticulture Design and Maintenance Committee, requests for annuals, herbs, vegetables, and perennials are submitted to the Greenhouse staff who create a production plan that factors in growth rates, environmental requirements, and the different display schedules of each plant. According to Greenhouse Coordinator Eric Cook, “Our busiest production time begins in January of each year, but we start cool-season annuals in the fall so they will be ready by the end of March for our spring containers. We start our peppers and tomatoes in February and March so they’ll be available for the annual spring plant sale in May.” When you consider the thousands of flowering annuals, vegetables, herbs, and perennials being grown in the Greenhouse, it’s a tall order to make sure everything flourishes on a set schedule. The Greenhouse Team regularly orders perennials, trees, shrubs, and seasonal color for the Garden’s interior displays and outdoor containers. The interior displays in the Orangerie and Visitor Center are changed out almost monthly, and there are more redbuttegarden.org

than 70 outdoor containers that are changed out seasonally. “Even though it’s snowy and cold outdoors, we make sure there’s always plenty of color available for our designer to use,” said Cook. Four climate-controlled bays in the Greenhouse enable the Garden staff to program different temperatures, humidity, and light levels. Among these is a dedicated bay maintained to replicate cooler conditions to enable staff to ‘harden off’ plants before they are moved outdoors and ultimately planted in the Garden. Watering and fertilizing schedules are also established to make sure each item receives the nutrients needed to thrive. Greenhouse grower Kara Hastings waters cuttings that will soon be available at the spring plant sale in May.
In addition to Cook, the Greenhouse Team includes a grower, designer, an integrated pest management specialist, several part-time staff, and as many as 50 volunteers. Together this team plans, manages, and grows all the annuals used in the interior displays and all of the outdoor gardens, as well as vegetables for the spring plant sale and perennials that can’t be obtained through other sources. More than 200,000 visitors are delighted by the outdoor gardens and indoor plantings at Red Butte Garden each year, and the Greenhouse Team plays a large part in making that happen. Jayne Anderson joined the Garden in September 2018 as the Marketing Communications Director. She is a graduate of the University of Utah (BS, MBA).
Bougainvilleas were planted in November to be ready for display in spring.

Red Butte Garden
ANTICIPATING THE GARDEN IN BLOOM Last fall Red Butte Garden staff and volunteers planted 52,473 bulbs, including an astounding 42,000 bulbs in the Rain Garden and Prospect Point sections of the Water Conservation Garden. This latest effort brings the total number of bulbs planted in Red Butte Garden to over 519,000. The design for this impressive bulb display is based on techniques learned from the late Peter Lassig, former lead gardener of Temple Square for the LDS Church. Lassig designed and planned the bulb display in the Rose Garden and along the Floral Walk many years ago. Plans for early fall bulb plantings were slowed because of shipping delays and limited availability of bulbs from the bulb-producing areas of Europe due to drought conditions. This resulted in calls to volunteers and horticulture and Garden staff to stage a massive drive to get the planting done before Thanksgiving and before the winter freeze set in. With approximately 40 additional people joining the Water Conservation Garden team, the last 8,000 bulbs were planted in under two hours!
Top L: Fritillaria uva-vulpis, Top R: Eremurus x isabellinus ‘Romance’ Bottom: Chionodoxa ‘Violet Beauty’
The intent of the Water Conservation Garden bulb design is to provide two bloom periods that offer color from early spring into early summer. Early and late blooming masses of bulbs fill almost all of the space between existing perennials, shrubs, and trees. Garden guests can look forward to a colorful, ecologically well-suited, and vibrant display that will last for years to come. The early blooming group of bulbs is comprised of seven daffodil (Narcissus cv.) cultivars, two fritillaries (Fritllaria spp.), and the pink and blue miniature ‘Little Beauty’ tulips (Tulipa humilis ‘Little Beauty’). Three large-flowered daffodils make up the backbone of the early season display and include Narcissus ‘Arkle,’ which carries golden yellow flowers that measure up to five inches across. The double, peony-type yellow flowers of Narcissus ‘Sherborne’ are flecked with smaller orange petals and provide a striking contrast to the comparatively staid flowers of Narcissus ‘Pacific Rim,’ which boast a reddish-orange rimmed cup. Tying the larger flowered daffodils to the smaller, darker colored miniature tulips and fox-grape fritillaries (Fritillaria uva-vulpis) are two mid-sized daffodil cultivars— the intensely fragrant ‘Falconet’ and orange trumpeted ‘Classic Garden.’ Massed around redbuttegarden.org
7
the edges of the larger daffodil plantings are the dainty double-flowered favorite Narcissus ‘Rip Van Winkle’ and large-cupped Narcissus ‘Camelot.’ The later flowering combination sets brilliant pinks and bluish purples against the diminishing yellows of the early display. One star of this display is the four- to fivefoot-tall pink-budded, salmon-flowered foxtail lilies (Eremurus x isabellinus ‘Romance’). These tremendous performers are flanked by over 3,000 glorious Sicilian honey garlic flowers (Allium bulgaricum), which will hold their pink, green, and creamy silver dangling clusters of flowers above the blue-purple blooms of camas (Camassia leichtlinii ‘Caerulea’). Complementing these are new-to-the-Garden lavender mountain lilies (Ixiolirion tartaricum ssp. pallasii) and pink firecracker flowers (Dichelostemma ida-maia ‘Pink Diamond’). Rounding out the later blooming group are two brilliantly colored flowering onions, a dark-purple flowering onion (Allium ‘Miami’) and the diminutive pink lily leek (Allium oreophilum). Bridging the late and early groups are lilac blue and orange crocus (Crocus sieberi ‘Tricolor’), pink and lilac glory-of-the-snow (Chionodoxa ‘Violet Beauty’ and ‘Pink Giant’), and the aptly named ‘Rapture’ daffodil, which is prized for the swept back appearance of its petals that give it the appearance of flight. Threaded throughout the entire design is another bulb that is new to the Garden and has only recently become commercially available—the rare cream-colored giant fritillary (Fritillaria raddeana). The dark foliage of these beautiful blooms will carry the eye through the Water Conservation Garden to the glorious views up Red Butte Canyon only offered from Prospect Point. This year, enjoy the promise of more than 500,000 bulbs blooming throughout Red Butte Garden, including 42,000 new bulbs in the Water Conservation Garden. Fritz Kollmann is the Lead Horticulturist for the Water Conservation Garden. He has been with The Garden since 2007 and has a BS in biology from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Planting bulbs in the Water Conservation Garden last fall.
