Reddam House High School Newsletter

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Every year in week three of this term, we find a buzz of interest and excitement around the school as students start thinking about their elective subjects for the following year. The subject selection forms and videos detailing what each elective might comprise have been sent home. This is particularly important for the current Year 10 cohort, who must select their five subjects with English with which they will proceed to the HSC. They have been working on this with Mrs. Jones this term, and the Reddam team of teachers is always available to assist where needed.

Into Year 9, many of the compulsory subjects become electives, so current Year 8 students need to select their two electives as students narrow their field of interest from 13 to 9 subjects.

In Year 8, a language is no longer compulsory, so the choice of Year 7 students is between continuing the language they were studying or selecting a different elective.

As always, any of our team of teachers is there to help clarify a decision. Still, in particular, Mr Garratt, Mr. Cawse, and the Year Coordinators have significant experience helping students with their choices. My advice to students would be to select a subject in which they are good and, more importantly, enjoy. Good luck with the process.

Follow this link to make your selection.

Mr Garratt reports, "Last weekend, our Year 12 Geography students embarked on an enriching viticulture expedition to the renowned Hunter Valley—the trip aimed to provide students with a handson experience in viticulture, complementing their HSC studies.

Our first stop was the Tamburlaine Organic Winery. The educational wine tour here, an essential case study for our HSC examinations, delved into the intricate details of wine farming, production, distribution, and the future trajectory of the industry. This comprehensive tour set the tone for the insightful weekend ahead.

After a quick lunch and cleanup, we headed to the First Creek Winery. This visit was exceptional as it is a case study in our textbook, and we were privileged to have Greg Silkman, the founder and CEO, personally guide us through the facility. His detailed discussion of the industry's inner workings and the company's operations was an invaluable experience for our students.

Saturday began with a hearty breakfast before venturing to the local markets. Here, students observed the informal tourist trade that supports the wine industry. We then explored the Hunter Valley Gardens, the original site for wine growing in the region, highlighting the formal tourism sector's role.

An enlightening visit to Tulloch Wineries followed this. The students were treated to a formal Kombucha tasting with cheese and crackers and an insightful presentation by Jay Tulloch OAM, the third-generation owner, and his daughter, Justina Tulloch. They covered topics pertinent to the HSC syllabus, focusing on international wine trade and future industry directions. We thank Jasmin Parker (Year 12) and the Tulloch family for their generosity and invaluable insights.

Sunday morning was dedicated to fieldwork and fieldwork techniques relevant to the Geography syllabus. Students engaged in hands-on activities using all necessary equipment to construct detailed fieldwork methodologies.

We returned home Sunday evening with knowledge and memories from a truly extraordinary experience. This expedition enhanced our students' understanding of viticulture and provided them with unforgettable practical insights, making their HSC studies all the more relevant and engaging” Having spoken to many Year 12 students since this tour, I can confirm that they loved it, and the experience has elevated their understanding and belief that they will achieve excellence in their upcoming examinations in the subject due to the experience. Thank you, Mr Garratt, for creating these unforgettable experiences for our students.

Gemma Squadrito reports another great week of Netball, "Reddam Netball is thriving as we reach the final stages of the season! After a week of much-needed sunshine, the girls have been truly shining on the court. Their dedication to their sports lessons and training was evident last Saturday with an impressive 10 out of 13 big wins! The teams are performing exceptionally well, and their hard work is

clearly paying off. We’re excited to see what this Saturday has in store and are looking forward to more fantastic performances. Keep up the great work, everyone!"

As we gear up for the highly anticipated Athletics Carnival, Bella Kable perfectly captures the excitement and spirit of the event. "Forget Stade De France, E.S Marks is the place to be on Wednesday to witness athletic prowess across both track and field events. From the javelin to the 3000m race to the 4 x 100m relay to the high jump, there is an event for every student to get involved in at our carnival. With close finishes between the houses each year, this carnival is sure to be a tough competition. Bring your house spirit and get excited for our upcoming Athletics Carnival on Wednesday, 14th August. Looking forward to seeing some school records being broken!"

Bella's words set the stage for an unforgettable day of competition, camaraderie, and school pride. Let's all come together to support our athletes and make this year's carnival one to remember!

On Monday evening, we held the Finals to our Instrumental Competition and it was a wonderful celebration of the talent in our school's music programme.

In the Year 7 - Year 9 section, I congratulate Janie Kogan for her piano piece and the bronze medal. Sophia Yu, also on piano, received the silver medal, and Zoen Song, who played the violin, received the gold medal.

In the Year 10 - Year 12 section, the competition was even more fierce with the exemplary standard of performance of all ten students. Final honours went to Sam Daniels on drum kit, receiving the bronze, Jacob Mueller the silver, and I congratulate the effervescent Felix Coster for his Gold medal performance.

We were honoured to welcome Dr Bernadette Harvey, a renowned pianist and education from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, as our adjudicator. She commented on the stage presence and musicality of our students, and commended the work being done in our music department. We were proud to showcase a broad range of repertoire, instruments and musical styles. We also thank our hosts Sylvie Pasvolsky (Year 9 Judiciary) and Alex Marucci (Year 12 Judiciary), and the talented Year 9 Creative Portfolio students for their backstage and technical assistance. A final thanks to the many students in our wonderful String Orchestra for playing beautifully during the adjudication.

Please enjoy our students' work at this competition by visiting this link: Instrumental Competition Finals 2024

In Public Speaking on Monday, Mrs Karney reports that “Sarah Mueller and Emma Bradburn competed in the Junior Secondary Speaking Award - both girls spoke superbly, acquitting themselves equally well in both the Impromptu and Prepared sections. While they did not progress to the next round, their performances impressed the audience, and they were congratulated on their outstanding efforts."

Year 12 Music students had their Trial examinations this week, and feedback from Mrs. Wood is that they were exceptional and are on the path to success as they prepare for their Final Practical performances for the HSC Examiners later this term.

Year 9 Art students left this morning after writing their Cycle Test for the annual Bundanon Art Retreat. I look forward to feedback from this exceptional experience upon their return on Sunday.

Have a great weekend and week ahead,

Dave Pitcairn

Music News

Well done to all of the finalists who competed on Monday night at our extraordinary Instrumental Competition Finals! Now, we turn our attention to the upcoming Studio Recitals, where students will all have the opportunity to perform with their teacher's studio in Adelaide Hall.

String Orchestra & Senior Strings

The Reddam House String Orchestra had a great start to the second semester, launching into the term with a wonderful performance of Trepak from Tchaikovsky's famous ballet The Nutcracker at the Instrumental Competition finals. This is one of many orchestral works that the string orchestra have been working on during the year, and is yet another example of how well the orchestra have been progressing and developing this year. The string orchestra has covered a wide range of repertoire, mastering works by well-known composers such as Handel, Brahms and Tchaikovsky, as well as much loved modern string composers Stephen Chin and Doug Spata. Covering such a wide range of orchestral works has given the orchestra the opportunity to develop both their orchestral performance skills as well as individual string playing technique. We cannot wait for our next performance!

The Reddam House Senior Strings, made up of the high school members of the school's string orchestra, have been hard at work this term. The ensemble will be performing Vivaldi's Concerto in g minor for string orchestra as part of the school's studio recital series. The group are thrilled to also be performing Trilogy, a collection of works by the well-known film composer John Williams, at the end of term assembly. Both works have provided the ensemble with the opportunity to further develop and refine its chamber ensemble skills. The students have embraced the challenge of rehearsing and performing without a conductor, which is an invaluable skill for those aspiring chamber musicians. The Senior Strings are looking forward to their performances this term!

Big shoutout to Reddam's own superstar rock band Lunchbox who has made it through to the live finals of the national Boom Clash Rockstar competition. Book your tickets now to support @lunchboxtheband in the finals tomorrow August 10, 6pm at Paddo RSL: https://bit.ly/4eULF2p. See you there!

Dear Careers Advisors, Guidance Officers, and Year Coordinators

With the UCAT fast approaching, The National Institute of Education is running two final workshops to get candidates ready for their upcoming UCAT. This same workshop makes a good starting point for Year 10 and 11 students who are considering a career in medicine or dentistry and will need to sit UCAT in the future.

Should you wish to advise your students of the upcoming UCAT event, please feel free to share the following with your students via email, social media or careers newsletter.

If you are sitting UCAT in 2024

The NIE Intensive UCAT workshop can really help fast-track your UCAT preparation, especially if you have not done much work yet. Even if you have been preparing already, the workshop is a great opportunity to attain some additional strategies and to also assess your readiness by attempting an actual UCAT difficulty level trial test, which you will receive as part of this program.

If you are in Years 10 or 11

The NIE UCAT intensive training workshop is also beneficial for Year 10 and 11 students who are considering sitting UCAT in the future.

The ideal approach to preparing for the UCAT is to start low-frequency and high-consistency preparation in the early stages of senior high school years. While you can and will have to still spend some time preparing during Year 12, it would be much better if the bulk of your preparation has been completed prior to the start of the busy Year 12 schedule. This way, you would only need to spend 1-2 hours per week practising to maintain your UCAT pace, rather than spending more time on the UCAT preparation and stressing about the Year 12 work. Therefore, we recommend that you officially start your UCAT training by participating in our full-day intensive UCAT preparation workshop.

Don't forget about the medical school interview readiness!

Although many students apply directly to institutions for early offers, please remind them that not all institutions make early offers and not every course is available through these schemes. They should always aim for their dream course, even if it is not part of an early offer scheme.

A few things to note:

• International students will be able to apply from 17 April. They need to select 'International application' from the 'Apply or log in' drop-down on the UAC website.

• All IB students can now complete a UAC application as we have received their student data from the IBO.

• All interstate students should wait until 1 August to apply as UAC won't receive their student data until later in the year. I'll let you know if this changes.

Course preferences

While applications are open, please remind your students that not all courses are available to select within their application. However, they can still submit an application with at least one preference and then come back later to list additional courses when they become available.

Universities have until 1 August to have all 2025 courses available for selection in the application.

Starting an application: essential info

This year, students need the following details to start their UAC application:

Personal email address: For security reasons, when students start their application they will need to register with a personal email address and a password. They'll then be sent an email to validate their details. Once they've done that, they will use their email address and password to log in to their application.

Year 12 student number and UAC PIN: NSW and ACT students – We emailed UAC PINs to NSW and ACT students on 3 April using the email addresses NESA and ACT BSSS have on file. If any students didn't receive this email, please ask them to call UAC. Also remind them to register a personal email address in their NESA Students Online account.

Interstate and IB students: These students also need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN. Their UAC PIN is their date of birth: DDMM.

Students need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN early in the application. These details identify them as a 2024 Year 12 student, which means they'll be able to apply for an early offer through the Schools Recommendation Scheme.

Unique Student Identifier (USI): At the request of institutions, this is now a mandatory field for domestic applicants who are Australian citizens. Students can quickly and easily create their USI or check if they already have one.
