Student Achievements

Dear Parents and Caregivers, Welcome back to what we trust is going to be a productive and full term. I hope that all our students and their families, along with our teachers and coaches, had a restful and happy break. What a pleasure it was to see everyone back on campus, ready and raring to go. It was an especially exciting start to the term for the Year 5 and 6 students, who headed off for three wonderful days away on their camps, to Bathurst and Canberra respectively. What a pleasure it is finally to be resuming these very special times together, as they were sorely missed during the Covid pandemic. I have no doubt that memories to last a lifetime were made during the past three days, and that they will further strengthen the already strong bonds in the two year groups. The halfway mark of the year is always a good time to pause and to take stock of what has happened in our lives thus far. As we reflect on the first six months of the year, we can probably all recall moments of satisfaction, as well as other times during which we have been challenged. This is no less so for the students, as they look back on all that they have achieved this year, as well as areas which will need even more focus in the coming months. The Year 3-6 students had the benefit of the mid-year exams to assess where they are at with their learning, and by all accounts they made the most of the opportunity to go through their exam papers to see where they did well and where they are still able to improve. This coming term is the ideal opportunity to do just that, and our teachers are keen to build on what has been learned thus far and to keep helping our students to reach their potential. While the Year K -2 students might not have written exams, their ongoing assessments are also a valuable tool to indicate how they are excelling with what they have learned.

No less than on the sports fields or in the hours spent practising a music piece, drama monologue or dance move, practise really does make perfect. We hope that this will be the case for our students this term, as they apply themselves fully to their academics. A positive attitude can do so much to enhance the learning experience, and we hope that the interactive and engaging lessons will draw in all our students and continue to generate an excitement for learning. The term also sees a number of excursions and incursions planned, and we know that these will add much to the educational experience, as learning is taken out of the classroom and made even more fascinating. In addition, a full sporting and cultural calendar promises many opportunities for our students to involve themselves in the life of the school, as they hone their skills and abilities. Above all, we hope that the term brings with it a deepening of relationships. Ours is a school which values the individual, while also promoting respectful interactions between all in the Reddam community. As Aristotle once wrote, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” We trust that the coming months will be characterised by gentle hearts and warm relationships, and that all will be able to reflect on a term in which they felt affirmed and respected. After three weeks in the World Freeride Ski Academy in Queenstown, Aarin and Rainer Koopman Woods were invited to compete in the Mini Shred Junior competition. The ages range from 6-14, and Aarin and Rainer were among the four youngest children to compete. Rainer did really well, finishing 7th of 11 in the Under 11 freestyle ski category, and Aarin finished 8th of 10. This was a good showing, especially as this was their first competition, so our hearty congratulations to both these students. Also on the ski slopes, Jacob Lay and Elvin Ni raced in this year’s Sydney Interschool Snowsport Championships, which were held during the holidays. In the Alpine racing section, Jacob came 34th and Elvin 35th, out of 45 competitors, while in the Ski Cross competition, Jacob came 22nd out of 40. Well done to both these students. On Friday 22nd July two of our most talented runners competed in the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships. This event comprises of the best primary age runners in the state from public, catholic and independent schools. Michael Rodov (Under 10s) and Theo Zagora (Under 9s) braved the conditions and both ran outstanding races. Michael finished in 19th position and Theo finished in 66th position. An outstanding effort from our boys who have worked so hard on their running this year! As there was a team event, both of the boys took home medals on the day, with Michael’s CIS team finishing 1st overall and Theo's CIS team finishing 3rd overall. Well done boys for representing your family, school and associations so proudly! Isabelle Liu in Year 2 competed in the 2022 Australian 10th Anniversary Koala Mini Fencing Challenge. Isabelle competed in the group of U8 Girl Foil, she won the Gold medal and in the U10 Girl Foil she was ranked 15th. Well done Isabelle.

Last Saturday, the Reddam 13 netball team had an excellent win in drizzly conditions. Well done, girls, and keep up the great teamwork! Pictured are a few of those in the team, all of whom were: Samara Colquhoun, Elizaveta Gracheva, May Yue, Ines Buck, Lara Charoomi, Giselle Fuzi, Sienna Lim, Briony Hirshman, Romi Gor, Violet Douglas, Madeline De Souza and Chiara Di Lernia. The Year 4 mathematicians enjoyed their Maths Games on Wednesday, while the Year 5 and 6 students will get a chance to flex their brains in the Olympiads next Monday. On Tuesday, the Year 6s will no doubt have a fascinating time on their Science incursion, and then on Wednesday they will meet a very special person, Dr Dasia Black – a Holocaust survivor – who will share her experiences with them. This will make all the more real the experiences they will be reading about in their English novel studies and will no doubt be deeply meaningful. On Sunday next week, the eagerly awaited Music Studio Recitals will take place in the Adelaide Hall, which should be a real highlight of the week. Enjoy your weekend and have a great term! KINDERGARTEN And we are back! What a great start to Term 3! Kindergarten are straight back into their learning and the teachers are so impressed with how quickly the students have settled back into their school routine. The classrooms were abuzz with chatter at the beginning of the week as we welcomed each other back from a well-deserved break and shared all our exciting stories of travels and adventures near and far. In Literacy we spent time consolidating all the sight words learnt so far, focusing on rhyming words and writing our Term 3 goals. Throughout our shared reading we focused on our comprehension skills through predicting, inferring, and discussing key events and characters throughout the story. To kick off Mathematics for Term 3 we focused on showing numbers in many ways, breaking apart two-digit numbers and skip counting. It’s so exciting to learn a new skill and count forwards and backwards in different ways. Road Safety was our focus in our Personal Development and Health lessons this week. We learnt the 6 steps when crossing the road safely and how to behave safely when next to a busy road. We discussed many different scenarios and role playing what to do when walking near traffic. We had a BLAST this week as we introduced our topic ‘Here we are’. Students will be learning about the physical and material worlds through an exploration of Earth and Space. We started our inquiry off by looking at the relationship between the Sun and the Earth, experimenting with different materials to help deepen our understanding of how we experience day and night.

YEAR 1 “Can you believe we are halfway through Year 1. Crazy!” “I don’t want to leave Year 1. It is my favourite so far.” “Maybe we can ask to stay here forever?” We overheard this conversation during lunch time this week. As teachers, we feel the same!! We were all very excited to get back to our classrooms this week, and the children were super enthusiastic about sharing their holiday adventures with each other. This week, Year 1 was introduced to their new topics for Term 3. In Science we shall be exploring the very hands-on topic of ‘Living Things’. In History and Geography, we delve into the world of ‘Shelter’ and how homes have changed over the years in Australia, and around the world.

In Maths this week we revised and consolidated skills from Term 2, and explored number words and numerals, and discovered how they help us in real life. In English we used an adjective word bank to write a recount of our holidays and we delighted over sharing our ‘Holiday Dairies’ with each other. The conversations that were inspired by these unique documents were truly heart-warming. We began to explore ‘Narrative Writing’, and explored the different parts of this genre, such as setting, characters, beginning, problem, resolution and ending. The students explored these elements using the familiar tale of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and were tasked with creating their own alternate ending to the traditional narrative.

Such an enthusiastic, and positive start to our third term of Year 1!

YEAR 2 There was lots of energy of excitement in Year Two this week as the students returned to school and chatted enthusiastically whilst sharing their holiday experiences. Many students and their families finally ventured abroad and connected with family and friends. This was clearly evident when sharing their holiday news. Year 2 students were so happy to welcome new friends into the cohort. In English we are excited about our upcoming literature study of the children’s classic “Charlotte’s Web”. The novel follows the story of Wilbur, a pig, and his friendship with Charlotte, a barn spider. The themes in this book will be integrated across all Key Learning Areas. This term in Science we will be looking at forces in our world and are very much looking forward to the ‘hands-on experiences’ in this unit. The focus for Geography will be on comparing different Wet and Dry Environments and exploring further the concepts of conserving our natural resources. The students are looking forward to a wonderful term ahead.

YEAR 3 The Year 3s returned to school, after a welldeserved break, with a refreshed and enthusiastic attitude. They were eager to see each other, share their holiday adventures, and discuss the events and topics that lie ahead this term. In the classroom, the students started their units on ‘Fractions’ in Mathematics, ‘Novel Studies’ in English, ‘Living Things’ in Science, ‘Communities’ in Geography, and ‘The World Around Me’ in PDH. The Year 3 teachers are extremely proud of their adaptable, motivated and inspiring attitudes. Let’s see what some of our students had to say about their holidays and the upcoming term: Jayden Thomson: ‘I loved having a really good rest after all of my hard work last term, and I have definitely come back feeling refreshed and ready for another fun-filled semester.’ Kiran Reddy: ‘I managed to see my cousins over the holidays, who I haven’t seen in two years. It was really nice. Computer Studies is going to be exciting this term as we have new computers.’ Isaac Fan: ‘I caught up with Jayden T over the school break, and we went to see, ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ at the cinema. It was really funny. I can’t wait for this term’s Cycle Tests. If I do well I will be extremely happy.’ Amy Bond: ‘I really enjoyed having a long, relaxing break after working so hard, studying for Exams last term. I had lots of time to watch TV. I expecially enjoyed watching different drawing tutorials and I can’t wait to share these with Mr Bailey.’ Alameda Fung-Love: ‘I spent my holiday in the outback of The Northern Territory. I held a cute puppy and went on a hike through Palm Valley which is beautiful. I’m so excited to start our new topics in each subject and to perform in The Lion King this term. It’s going to be fantastic!’ Emma Radlovacki: ‘I had a great time on Hamilton Island. We played mini-golf which was really fun. I have loved coming back to school as I was excited to see my teachers and my friends.’

Well done to all for making the most of your holiday time and a fantastic start to Semester Two. Way to go Year 3!

YEAR 4 A huge welcome back to all Year 4 students! It was great to see the excitement and enthusiasm of our eager learners returning after a well-deserved holiday. All students started school on Tuesday, and they were thrust into the thick of learning our brand-new topics for this term. Literacy: Students were given the opportunity to read specific books over the holiday as part of our Term 3 novel study. One class will be studying ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, whilst the other classes will be studying Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda’. Both novels represent a great insight into the world of magic and wonder. It will be amazing to see how students will interpret the stories and be able to write in the role of the character. Science: In Science, students began to look at ‘Our Changing World’. This unit of study looks at how the Sun, Moon and Earth interact to cause the planet to change. Students began this unit by showcasing “What I already know” about space. The level of inquiry and thinking was extraordinary, and we cannot wait to build upon these pre-existing concepts. History: Students investigated “What makes a community?”. We all belong to different communities. This could be our place of worship, our local area or even our school. However, communities are forever changing and where we belong now, doesn’t necessarily mean that it will stay the same way. By looking at our communities, it will help shape a good sense of identity and belonging. It has been a brilliant first week. Well done Year 4!

YEAR 5 & 6 ENGLISH Year 5

This week, Year 5 studied the social context of the novel ‘The One and Only Ivan’. They learned that though this novel is fictional, it is based on real events. They watched a video detailing Ivan’s birthplace and the events that changed the course of his life. Here are two students who did excellent mind map work on the protagonist Ivan.

Matilda Lehrer and Nikita Lyandvert.

Year 6 Sometimes history is best taught through the imaginative medium of fiction. This week, Year 6 began studying the social and historical context of the Nazi Holocaust. This is to prepare them for their study of the novel ‘Once’ written by Morris Gleitzman. By delving into the context, our students were offered an important opportunity to learn about the catastrophic impact of Nazi Germany’s program of annihilation on Europe’s Jewish population in the early 20 th century. That this history remains relevant and all too real to many families in our Reddam community, is evidenced by the stories students have bravely shared in class this week. We study these events through the medium of fiction, to give students access to alternative histories that provide hope. Through the eyes of children, Gleitzman’s tale highlights the bravery, companionship and selflessness of children in the face of adversity. Well done, Year 6, for engaging with the topic.

YEAR 5 & 6 MATHEMATICS Year 5s started Term 3 by refreshing their skills in measuring and constructing angles. These mathematicians adeptly honed their proficiency in forming reflex angles by first measuring an acute, obtuse, or right angle and subtracting from 360 degrees. They differentiated between types of angles and naming angles (always using the mathematical symbol for angles, uppercase letters, with the vertex in the middle). Furthermore, they distinguished between complementary and supplementary angles. They used the words ‘complement’ and ‘supplement’ as well as ‘adjacent’ to describe angles summing to either 90 or 180 degrees. The Year 6s too displayed an excellent understanding of the content covered in the last week of Term 2. They reviewed and tackled deductive geometry questions using their prior knowledge of angle theorems, such as angles on a straight line, angles around a point and vertically opposite angles. Next week, they look forward to investigating polygons and what defines a 2D shape as a one, with the intention that all prior knowledge will have paved the way for a deeper understanding of these concepts.

YEAR 5 & 6 SCIENCE In Science this week, Year 5 and 6 students began their new module of Physics. Year 6 students focused on the law of conservation and explored a variety of energy stores, identifying each store's definition and some examples. Next week, students in Year 6 will study how these energy stores are transferred between one another. Year 5 students studied Newton's first law of motion, identifying what the law is, how it is defined and where we encounter this law in everyday life. Next week, students in Year 5 will move onto studying Newton's second law of motion. In Science Club, students explored chromatography. Students carried out a chromatography experiment and separated the dyes in different coloured pens. Separating these dyes allowed students to create chromatography butterflies. Students discovered that to make certain colours a mixture of colours is used and by carrying out a chromatography experiment these colours can be separated.

YEAR 5 & 6 MUSIC It was an enjoyable start to Term 3 in Music this week. The Year 4 students diligently revised the Concepts of Music and enjoyed completing a practice listening task. They also honed their aural skills by completing a rhythmic dictation. Meanwhile, in Year 2, the students had a lot of fun singing, playing and moving. They especially enjoyed the song ‘Roll Catch’ which we used to help understand the feel of the compound time signature 6/8. While singing, the students rolled a ball to one another in time with the song in order to help feel the 3 beat subdivision of a compound time signature. Roll catch, roll catch Roll catch the ball. Roll catch, roll catch Roll catch the ball

MUSIC PERFORMANCE It was a joy to welcome our musicians back to their lessons and ensembles this term. There is a much stronger focus on collaboration in the second half of this year, meaning that musicians will work together to create performances and support each other. We will present many more ensemble performances in our school assemblies, and work towards more opportunities and recitals in Term 4. Of course, most of our students will also enjoy the opportunity to perform a solo piece for their families and friends at our Studio Recitals, scheduled throughout the term! Please be reminded of our two Term 3 competitions below, and be sure to submit your entries on time.
