Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 23, Issue 30 | 20 October 2023

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The HSC Class of 2023 is completing the second week of their Final Examinations, and to date, teachers and students have reflected positively on the exams that have been written. Seeing the delight on most students' faces following any exam is very satisfying, knowing they have been well prepared by their teachers and have put in hours of preparation in the buildup. We are also excited to announce that we have received some excellent news regarding Callback nominations for our HSC Dance students. A total of 9 nominations have been received amongst the group, with each student presenting their practical examinations receiving at least one. This is a fantastic achievement from a creative and talented group of young dancers and a well-deserved acknowledgment of their hard work and determination.

Congratulations to the following students: Core Performance

With the arrival of Gina Neilson in the role of Marketing, our social media footprint is expanding. In addition to our Facebook and Instagram account @reddamhousesydney she has created a Linktr.ee account (a mini "website" that we can amend ourselves to keep parents up to date).

She has now updated the school Linktr.ee account. https://linktr.ee/reddamhousesydney. Parents can now check Linktr.ee for all upcoming school events, sporting and performing arts.

The Year 10 organisers of TEDxYouth@ReddamHouse, Jessica Levy and Emily Miller, and their team will be congratulated on providing another fantastic TED Talk event. This year, for the first time, it was hosted at the Woollahra Library, which added to the event's enjoyment. Their theme of “A Lightbulb Moment” saw the six presenters speak on topics ranging from the future of renewable energy and cognitive psychology relating to students to the Voice referendum. TED Talks have always been about ideas worth sharing, and this year's speakers did live up to that ideal. I thank our speakers, Jeremy Liebman, Noam Antonir, Steven Most, Alex Ryvchin, Darren Miller, and Nigel Russell. Their presentations will soon be posted on the website https://www.tedxyouthreddamhouse.com/ Also, thanks to Lox Stock and Barrel for providing the lunch.

Congratulations to our Year 9 team of Future Problem Solvers, who attended the 2023 National Finals in Brisbane last weekend. The team of Ivan Ngyuen, Zac Levin, Xavier Hanna, and Jessica Zhu qualified to attend the National Finals and, having finished 4th out of thirty participating teams, have now qualified to progress to the international finals in Bloomington, Illinois, USA, next year, during June. My thanks to Mr Ehrlich, who accompanied the students and is now ensuring his passport is ready for the trip to America next year. Also, thanks go to Anna Messarati for her help in initiating the program and the initial preparations of the team.

The Reddam House Drama Company proudly presented two plays at the Bondi Pavillion on Wednesday and Thursday. Scaredy Cat, directed by Chris Montgomery featuring our Year 8 and Year 9 Drama students, and Year 9 Are Animals, directed by Will Hodgson, with actors from Year 10 and Year 11, and audiences enjoyed all three performances. I thank Will and Chris for creating such fantastic opportunities for our students. There was a buzz of excitement from each cast following the shows on Thursday night. Well done to all involved! We're excited to share more photos next week.

Other impressive student achievements include:

This year, Tali Ereira has been a member of the Sydney Dance Company Youth Ensemble. Entry into the group is by audition only and involves young dancers from all over Sydney who train and rehearse together with professional Dance artists and choreographers to hone their skills and enhance their creativity. The program aims to teach students not only how to become stronger dancers but also how to interpret movement and become Dance makers themselves. Tali has been working with this group throughout the year and finished with a final showcase at the Neilsen Theatre at Sydney Dance Company in Walsh Bay. Her performance with the group was a beautiful example of Dance as an artform and the power of working as an ensemble. Tali absolutely shone and displayed a sophisticated understanding of how to embody movement to communicate with others. Congratulations on an outstanding performance!

We would also like to congratulate Devan Fuchs in Year 12 who was one of only 50 students selected across NSW to participate in the UBS Finance Academy. Below is what Devan had to say about that fantastic opportunity.

"Over the September school holidays, I had the opportunity to take part in the UBS Finance Academy, a selection of 50 students across NSW to provide us with information and knowledge about the finance sector. The academy took place over 3 days, each filled with lectures, activities, collaborative workshops and discussions from 8:30-5 every day. It was an amazing opportunity to meet with other like-minded students from all across the state - many travelling hours just to attend the academy. A personal highlight was our visit to the UBS trading floor (which processes $11.5 billion worth of purchases, trades and swaps a day!), meeting all the passionate traders who were kind enough to share what their work entails with us. Overall, the academy provided me with invaluable insight into a massive industry and gave me an understanding of what day-to-day life in the finance sector entails."

Finally, our HSC artists have begun working on their Body of Work for submission in 2024. Showcased here we share Jasmine Spira's stunning clay work.

New single application for scholarships Students can now complete one form to be considered for most scholarships at the University of Sydney*. High School students will need their most recent school report or HSC trial results, to answer self-reflective questions about their motivation to study and let us know what areas of study they’re considering. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, students must have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September. They only need to complete the form once (unless their circumstances change) and upon successful completion will be considered for equity and/or meritbased scholarships depending on their circumstances. Note, scholarships that have previously been awarded automatically (e.g. MySydney) will continue to be awarded automatically depending on a student’s eligibility. However, we still recommend students apply for scholarships using this form so they can be considered for as many as, and to the highest value, possible. * Some University of Sydney scholarships will still require individual application per scholarship. See sydney.edu.au/scholarships for a list of all scholarships, including terms and conditions. Admission pathways and entry schemes Our entry schemes help students make the most of their qualifications by recognising their circumstances, special achievements and other abilities and activities. Most of our entry schemes are

currently open, with fast-approaching application deadlines. To learn more and apply, students can visit the admission pathways webpage or email Sydney Future Students at admission.pathways@sydney.edu.au with questions. New admission scheme: Regional and Remote Entry Scheme The Regional and Remote Scheme – for domestic students residing in or attending a school in a regional or remote area – offers admission to a Sydney Uni undergraduate degree on a reduced ATAR. Students are also encouraged to submit an application to be considered for scholarships through the University's new single scholarship application form. Applications close 29 September and students must also have the University of Sydney listed as a preference on this date. Please note: most accommodation scholarships still require a separate application through the relevant college website. MySydney Entry and Scholarship Scheme MySydney offers eligible students residing in a low socio-economic areas entry on a reduced ATAR, an $8,500 per annum scholarship for the duration of their undergraduate degree, and additional support. Students simply submit a UAC application and list the University of Sydney as a preference. If the student is eligible, we will notify them via email on the dates listed on the MySydney website.

We offer a wide variety of scholarships for domestic undergraduate students. To make the process easier, we've created a centralised form where students can be considered from a pool of $1.5 million worth of scholarships through one simple application. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, current Year 12 students must complete the form and have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September. Visit the domestic undergraduate scholarships webpage to learn more about the eligibility criteria and application process, to view a list of the scholarships covered in this form, and to submit an application. UAC

Applications Applications are still steadily rolling in. Please remind students that to be considered for many highdemand courses, and to avoid a higher fee, they should lodge a UAC application before 29 September. If they wish to be considered for an SRS offer, both applications must be lodged by 18 September. Many people ask about the benefits of applying through UAC compared to applying directly to an institution for an early offer, so here are a few key points: •

Not all courses are available for early offers.

An early offer is not guaranteed.

A UAC application provides more options for preferences.

Students who have experienced difficulties/disadvantages in Year 11 or 12 can have their circumstances taken into account through an EAS application.

Students should make the most of their options and list different course preferences in their UAC application and their direct application. However, if they miss out on an early offer from a direct application they can add that course preference to their UAC application and compete for an offer based on their ATAR. The majority of students will be made an offer based on their ATAR and the hard work they have put into their Year 12 studies. Preferences While attending uni open days this year, the UAC Community Engagement team has answered many questions from students about how to list their preferences. In some cases a university has told them they need to list a course as their number one preference in order to receive an offer, but the course is not their first choice. Students should always: •

place their dream course as their first preference

include a back-up course as a lower preference.

And they should find out: •

the previous lowest selection ranks for the course – is it a realistic choice?

if they are eligible for any adjustment factors.
