Reddam House High School Newsletter 2 June 2023 Volume 23, Issue 15 | 2 June 2023

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I have been following the progress toward the Grand Final of the Year 9 debating team with interest for several reasons. Firstly the team is made up of Year 8 students and secondly, they are fantastic at what they do. On Friday night, Ms. Guinea, Dee, and I went to support this team in the Grand Final when they debated against Sydney Boys High School, and I’m pleased to announce that they continued their run of victories and were awarded the trophy for the best Year 9 team in the Eastside competition for 2023. I was so impressed. Congratulations to the team of Evan Zhu, Emma Bradburn, Katherine Seki, and Maddie Wenmohs

The highlight of the Visual Art Calendar, the HSC Art Showcase, was held on Monday evening. I imagine at least five hundred parents and their children from all Year groups viewed the exhibition. The Year 12 installations were once again awe-inspiring. These students' exceptional talent was on display for all to see. This artistic process does not happen in a vacuum, and the entire Art department, under the leadership of Laurellen Symonds, has created a safe space in which students can imagine, explore, make mistakes, and develop their deep conceptual connection with their craft: an exceptionally inspirational evening and my thanks to all involved. I have included an online version of the HSC Visual Arts Showcase Guide for those who could not make the evening.

SHOWCASE GUIDE

Tuesday was Wellbeing Alpaca Day at the Bondi Campus. Students and staff could pet alpacas, Louis and Marilyn, then purchase the bake sale. The very successful meet and greet included fundraising

for the charity "Reach Out" and was organised by the Year 12 Wellbeing Portfolio. Congratulations to them.

Dr. Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services (www.enhanced-learning.net) ran a study skills session with Year 11 The session focused on helping students identify changes and improvements they could make to their approach to their studies to maximise their results in their final years of school. The main areas covered with Year 11 were working effectively in the evenings and dealing with distractions, managing time efficiently, planning for assessments, making brainfriendly study notes regularly, and using various active study techniques to suit individual learning preferences. Parents are encouraged to review the handout from the session with students and discuss the main areas identified where changes need to be made. Parents can also find additional study skills tips on the following website: http://studyskillstoptipsparents.com/.

This week our talented Year 8 Drama students presented their Half Yearly Drama Performances, demonstrating their flair for mask and mime techniques. Our students created their white face masks with unique character traits and expressions. They then brought these masks to life on stage, developing quirky exaggerated characters and creating original and entertaining narratives. We are incredibly proud of all of our Year 8 Drama students and congratulate them for their hard work and creativity this semester.

The Instrumental Competition Finals were held on Wednesday evening in Adelaide Hall. The adjudicator for the evening, Karen Carey, was so impressed with the standard of performance from all of our finalists that she had to include other criteria in her judging rubric to distinguish between musicians. Stage presence, connection with the audience, and interpretation of the music became factors that she looked for. Congratulations to all twelve finalists in both sections but special mention to those she awarded bronze, silver, and gold medals.

In the Year 7 - Year 9 section:

Bronze: Eitan Gottheiner on the clarinet.

Silver: Sam Daniels on the drum kit.

Gold: Aliana Ray playing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto

In the Year 10 - Year 12 section:

Bronze: Frankie Kogan on the piano

Silver: Haines Sayer playing the tuba

Gold: Felix Coster on the saxophone playing Gotkovsky’s Brilliance

In Science, the Year 7 students are learning about specialised cells and how they are adapted to perform their functions. We have such a great variety of cells that students are building. Great fun was had while learning these valuable lessons.

The Year 11 Biology students enjoyed an excursion to Longneck Lagoon on Thursday. They travelled to the northwest fringe of Sydney to study the forest and freshwater ecosystems around Longneck Lagoon. For many, it was their first exposure to fieldwork. They learned to record various observations, such as air moisture, soil pH, slope, and canopy density, as they drew a transect of the trees in the forest. The activities around the creek feeding the lagoon were, perhaps, the most memorable. As well as learning various water tests such as turbidity, salinity, and dissolved oxygen, students used dipnets to catch aquatic organisms and identify them. One discovery was the backswimmer, a most exciting insect propelling itself upside down through the water with its back legs acting as oars.

The students felt they had gained a worthwhile learning experience my thanks to Dr. Aan Tham for arranging this learning opportunity for our students.

Year 12 Biology Excursion

Last week the Year 12 Biology students spent the day at the Museum of Human Disease. There they had the opportunity to view real human diseased organs and diagnose infectious and non-infectious diseases. They also did some study on Genetics and Genetic diseases. Students who are completing IB or Year 12 in WA can now apply via UAC, as we have their details in our system for them to lodge their application.

I have had many questions about not finding courses on the UAC website. Please advise your students that if they can't find the course/s they are looking for, it just means that the uni hasn't provided UAC with all details as yet. All courses will be listed progressively and no later than 1 August.

Schools Recommendation Scheme

At the end of April, UAC received 2000 SRS applications which is up by 18% at the same time last year.

And a reminder that schools won't be able to rate students until early to mid-August. We will be in touch soon to confirm the timing of this. We want to thank you for your patience while we are working on changes to improve SRS.

Early entry offer schemes

As you are all aware, there are many different early-entry applications, including SRS, so here are a few tips for students.

• If students want to keep all opportunities open to them, then they should apply for both early entry as well as through UAC for ATAR-based offers.

• Don't duplicate preferences across applications.

• Keep track of all applications lodged.

• Early entry isn't a guarantee of entry, as students must meet the minimum entry requirements.

For more information about each early entry offer scheme, check the UAC website here.

Educational Access Scheme

The UAC website has a great deal of information on the disadvantages students can apply for under EAS. We would recommend students check each category of disadvantage for details on documents they may need to provide to get themselves prepared for what's ahead.

To date, we have received just under 3000 EAS applications, with many who have already uploaded the required documents for a full assessment of their application.

The Access booklets are available online for you to download and provide to students if need be.

Introducing UNSW Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offers

We are excited to announce that for Term 1, 2024 onwards, domestic students who are successful in applying for the UNSW Portfolio Entry Scheme will be eligible for an Early Conditional Offer.

Portfolio Entry provides students applying for most Arts, Design & Architecture and Engineering degrees with the opportunity to showcase their passion and talent through a portfolio of work, alongside their ATAR.

What is a Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offer?

Successful applicants will receive an early conditional offer which has an adjusted ATAR requirement up to 10 ATAR points below the lowest selection rank for a specific degree or range of related degrees.

If a student meets or exceeds the adjusted ATAR requirement for an eligible degree and lists this as their highest eligible preference in UAC for the specified UAC offer round, then they will be issued a firm offer to that degree.

For Term 1, 2024 entry, firm offers for Portfolio Entry will be issued in UAC December Round 2 (NSW and ACT applicants) and January Round 1 (Interstate and IB applicants).

When is the Deadline?

Submissions for Term 1, 2024 are already open, with early conditional offers released Friday, 1 September 2023.

A late round of Portfolio Entry applications will open Saturday, 2 September 2023 and close on Wednesday, 22 November 2023. Late round early conditional offers will be released on Friday, 8 December 2023 Find out more
