Fall 2020 begins!

It’s a different kind of fall this year. Redding Recreation has decided to launch this season’s guide entirely online. While much of our fall lineup has been canceled as a part of a nationwide effort to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, we are excited to announce that there are still great things happening at Redding Recreation. Tennis, grasshopper sports, fly fishing, and mosaics are still going on! We hope you’ll join in the fun with us. We encourage you to find special and safe ways to stay active and enjoy your family, friends, and the beautiful fall weather that should be here before we know it. Carve a pumpkin or two, start a fall garden, challenge your family to a race in the park, or take a leisurely bike ride. Even while we are social distancing, there are still so many ways to make the most of 2020.

On the cover! This year, we decided to include a DIY cover for kids to print out and make their own! If you’d like to participate in our first ever Activity Guide Coloring Contest, send a picture of your finished work to reddingrecreation@gmail.com, tag us @reddingrecreation, or use #reddingreccoloringcontest on social media to enter. Winners will have their work published on social media, and will receive free passes to Turtle Bay Exploration Park. We’d love to see what you all can come up with!

Stop motion is a filming technique where pictures are taken of objects (people, clay figurines, toys, etc.) that are moved in small increments. When the pictures are put together, it makes the objects appear to be moving (Isle of Dogs and Coraline are famous examples of this technique). To make these movies, we use flip books, iPhones/ iPads, and free apps called Stop Motion Studio.

Young Naturalists emphasis instilling environmental stewardship in youth through hands-on activities and project based learning. Young Naturalists will utilize the Project Wild curriculum which is a wildlife-based conservation and environmental education program that fosters responsible actions toward wildlife and related natural resources. Participants will focus on local wildlife, their habitats, and conservation practices to protect their environment. A healthy snack is provided during the program.

MEET THE REDDING REC STAFF!

Teresa Urricelqui Teresa Urricelqui has worked for Redding Recreation for 27 years. She serves as the Recreation Superintendent where she works to provide recreational opportunities like preschool activities, adult sports, adult & youth classes, and day camps. Additionally, she works with coworkers on special events and coordinates with other community-based organizations on joint projects. What Teresa loves most about her job is, “the people we work with and for.” “It is so rewarding for me to see a family with young children meeting other young families and making lifelong connections.” Enterprise Park holds a special place in Teresa’s heart: “I was an intern when the City built it. I was able to see how it went from a field of dirt to what it is today. I was fortunate to see the community come together to build Kids Kingdom and to still be there when it was redone and became shiny and strong again.” Teresa admits she cannot sing, dance or juggle, but, she says, “I have been lucky enough to be around very talented people who have the same goal in creating amazing programs, activities, and events for our community. Many of the programs Redding Recreation offers are because of people who have a passion for something and want to share it. They see an opportunity to create a program that will give Redding’s children new experiences and a chance to learn from those experiences.”

Jeff Hansen Jeff Hansen, Recreation Supervisor, knows the power of teamwork. He oversees more than 500 kids in Redding Recreation’s youth sports programs and hosts a six-week sports camp during the summer. In addition to scheduling classes and roster building, Jeff leads a team of coordinators, coaches, and volunteers. He also serves as the liaison between the parks and the organizations that utilize them for local sports programs. Jeff thinks of Highland Park as, “a hidden gem,” because of its fantastic playground equipment and its large grassy area that is perfect for accommodating an event of any kind. The work he enjoys most is working with the volunteers who dedicate their evenings and weekends to coach and organize youth teams. Their efforts ensure that the kids in the community have a place to play and no one is cut from a team. “These people are truly what make our community great.”

Jenny Moore Jenny Moore, Recreation Supervisor, began her career with the City of Redding 23 years ago. Her first job was as a lifeguard and water safety instructor at The Redding Aquatic Center. After college, Jenny was able to build a career she loves with Redding Recreation. She jokingly says, “other duties, as assigned,” is her number one job duty, but all jokes aside, she is responsible for the Aquatics program, boating & water safety classes, contract classes, and special events. With a background in history and a passion for antique fashion, Jenny had plenty of opportunities to hone her writing skills. This hidden talent has led her to write grants for the Community Services Department—ones that have helped garner funding for some major projects in the City of Redding. “I love being able to see the direct benefits of my work in the community—whether it be a playground that was funded with grants I worked on or seeing children I gave swim lessons to grow up to become lifeguards.” It’s no surprise that Caldwell Park is Jenny’s personal favorite: “I spend most of my time there at the Redding Aquatic Center. It’s a beautiful regional park, right on the Sacramento River. How lucky are we?!”

MEET THE REDDING REC STAFF! What Advice does the Redding Recreation Staff have for Surviving the Pandemic? Take a breath, keep active, and enjoy those most important to you. Things will get better soon.” —Teresa

“Monitor your screen time! It does take work, but this is the number one thing that people can do to stay healthy. Getting outside and unplugging is a must. Schedule a time each day where there are no electronics allowed. From exercise to board games, you will be amazed how your family changes when they have to interact without technology.” —Jeff “Take this time to explore the outdoors. We have a wonderful trail system, and this is a great time to explore our town—while social distancing, of course.”—Jenny “With the uptick in childhood obesity during the quarantine, now is the time to explore the great outdoors and teach your kiddos to cook. Having your children help make a menu, including daily snacks, is a great way to get them engaged with their health and keep them full at the same time. Just like a restaurant, the kitchen isn’t always open. Setting “operating” hours is a great way to help set healthy limits.” —Christina

“Redding is such an amazing place to live! Go to the lake, go on a hike, or just go for a walk in the neighborhood!” —Brook 20

Christina Massey For 11 years, Christina Massey has worked with Redding Recreation as a Recreation Supervisor. She is responsible for the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, where she is involved in the development and implementation of programs, special events, and cultural experiences, in addition to planning for its future. “Our Redding Recreation department is a family, and everyone sincerely cares and supports one another, which is a positive atmosphere to work in. Working for Redding Recreation allows me to develop enriching and rewarding programs for the community and see them come to fruition. I’ve been able to build some really special relationships with the families in our community.” Her ability to problem-solve and her attention to detail have come in handy in her work at the MLK Center: “Working with youth has taught me that being consistent, with clear expectations, is crucial to my job’s success.” Of all of the amazing parks in Redding, Christina’s favorite is MLK Jr. Park because of her connection to the neighborhood kids, the playgrounds, grassy fields, the lighted basketball court, and its historical significance to the community.

Brook New If you’ve ever called The City of Redding to register for a class or make a reservation at a City park, chances are you have spoken to Brook New, Redding Recreation’s Clerk. For nearly two-and-a-half years, Brook has been one of the smiling faces that greets everyone who visits the Recreation office. She’s entered new class information into the online registration system, has processed payments & refunds, and has taken care of Recreation staff ’s payroll. What she loves most about working with Redding Recreation are her amazing coworkers who believe in making Redding a great place by providing a sense of community. “I love that we have the opportunity to promote character in our youth and encourage health and fitness to the residents of Redding.” Brook has been a personal trainer and nutrition coach for 20 years, a hidden talent she uses to encourage people to find ways to be just a little bit better everyday. Foothill Park happens to be Brook’s favorite park—not only because it’s in her neighborhood, but because it’s a great place to catch one of Redding’s beautiful sunsets and has the best views of Mt. Shasta, the Sundial Bridge, and Lassen. Brook and her family love playing yard games, including croquet, bocce ball, ladder ball, and ping pong. She is a firm believer that spending time outside is the best way to stay healthy right now.

proudly introduce...

GOAT STRIKE FORCE! Craig Wittner, Fire Marshal at Redding Fire Department, had been watching the growing trend of using goats to control vegetation in larger California cities for years. With more than 15,000 service calls to the Redding Fire Department last year, finding crews to conduct controlled burns has been challenging. Wittner reached out to Redding Electric Utility and the Redding Parks Department, Redding Fire Department’s partners in fuels management, to see if they would be willing to help fund and oversee the program for a trial period, since the goats had already proven successful in fuels reduction in areas with similar vegetation. With support from both entities, the job was sent out to bid. Western Grazers, a goat farm in Red Bluff, was up to the task.

We’ve had greater success with the goats in municipalities, as there is a greater awareness that green belts can create an issue with fire,” says Arrowsmith.

Tim Arrowsmith, owner of Western Grazers, began his vegetation management venture with just a few goats. Nine years later, his Red Bluff based farm is home to several thousand goats who travel up and down the state to aid in vegetation management efforts. Arrowsmith is glad to have secured a contract closer to home. His herd of goats, all of which are Kiko-Savannah crossbred goats, with origins in New Zealand, are doing invaluable work here in Shasta County.

“With so much natural beauty in Redding, finding a natural way to remove excess natural materials seemed fitting when it came to Fire Mitigation efforts,” says Dan Beans, Electric Utility Director with Redding Electric Utility. Aside from being a cost-effective way to manage vegetation, Beans sees the animals as an inspiration for the community to be mindful of the responsibility that comes with living in an area where wildfires are a part of life.

Goats are particularly beneficial in communities like Redding, since they don’t require a large crew of personnel to manage them. The cost to hire the Goat Strike Force is comparable to hiring a hand crew, and the per-acre rate goes down the longer the goats stay in a given area.

The goats work quickly, quietly and effectively at clearing “When the Carr Fire came through the area, it was a thick blackberries, poison oak and brush so that Redding reminder that something needed to be done about fire Electric Utility’s Arborists have easier access to trees that fuels - not only in rural areas, but also within the city limits. are in proximity to power lines.

“Just getting to access our poles can be problematic due to excessive vegetation. Having the goats go in first can help clear the way so that Apprentice Fire Fighters and Maintenance Workers can get in to cut, chip or burn larger branches. Together these efforts significantly reduce the risk of utility-caused fires - those that threaten our facilities and the community,” says Beans. “Having the goats here is a tremendous help to the Parks Department and to the community,” says Travis McNeill, City of Redding Parks Department Superintendent. “They are doing important work and they are doing it in a cost effective way. Two of the parcels they worked on this summer were over 20 acres each. It would take the team the rest of the summer weed-eating that much space.” This year, there are more than 1500 goats in the Redding Area, munching away at the fire risk and winning hearts in the process. On average, 300 goats can remove about an acre of vegetation per day. This season the goats have already cleared upwards of 80 acres in the Redding area.

“The goats do great work. They remove the flashy fuels like grasses —the ones that are easy to ignite.” “The goats do great work. They remove the flashy fuels like grasses —the ones that are easy to ignite. They break the continuity from the ground as they trample the grasses and they remove up to six feet of vegetation in bushes and trees. If a fire starts on the ground, it doesn’t grow with as much intensity or speed, thanks to the goats. Since they aren’t mechanized, there’s no fear of sparking a fire with equipment,” says Wittner. One additional benefit to having the goat strike force on hand is that it means that less herbicides are used to control the vegetation, which helps protect the local watershed. While spraying the vegetation with herbicide is a normal part of the process of fuels reduction, the goats provide an environmentally-sound alternative. Redding Electric Utility, who funded the program, sees the goats becoming a regular part of vegetation management for the foreseeable future. “As with any problem, having the right tools is important,” says Beans. “The goats are a great tool for specific applications in vegetation management.” “We really appreciate those four-legged coworkers of ours,” says Wittner. “We’re grateful to REU and Parks for supporting the program. The public enjoys having them here as much as we do, and they are a big help in keeping fire mitigation at the top of mind for the community. And that’s a win.”
