Summer is HERE And Youth Sports are back! This Summer we have a lot of fun planned between Summer Camps, Swim Lessons, and Youth Sports. There are even a few great things coming soon as we move into warmer weather and see restrictions starting to lift locally and statewide. This season we are stressing the importance of water safety. With our hot summers and the close proximity of lakes, rivers, pools and waterfalls, Summer is a season of swimming! Make sure everyone in your family is water safe. Even better, make sure the adults in the family are trained for water rescue. Redding Recreation offers hundreds of swimming courses each year for kids and adults as well as lifeguarding and basic water rescue classes. Water safety means water FUN!

COVID-19 Protocols Redding Recreation’s first priority is to make sure our community is safe while enjoying the camps and classes we have to offer. City staff works closely with state and local health officials to make sure we comply with the latest guidelines and best practices to help curb the spread of covid-19. Below you will find what you can expect when attending a Redding Recreation program. However, based on the type, location, and age group of the program or event, some guidelines may be modified or adjusted to comply with health regulations. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we work to allow for the best possible experience under these circumstances.
Face Coverings Face coverings are required for all individuals ages 9 and up inside public spaces. During any outdoor activity where 6 feet of physical space cannot be maintained, face masks are also required. Face covering policies may differ for specific classes if health guidelines specify.
Physical Space We know keeping physical space is hard. Especially when your friends and loved ones are near. We are asking all patrons to do their best to keep 6 feet of physical space between themselves and others while inside our facilities and participating in activities. Based on the type of activity, less spectators may be allowed. If spectators are allowed, please maintain adequate distance while watching. Based on the current COVID-tier, some changes in physical space protocols may be required.
Sanitation All staff have been trained in proper sanitation techniques. All facilities are throughly cleaned before and after each use, and sanitation procedures are followed during each activity.
Health Checks Participants of any program are asked before entering indoor facilities if they have been experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19. If the answer is yes, the participant will be asked not to join the program. Temperature checks are required for all participants before entering a program or activity.
Facility Rentals At this time, facility rentals are limited to events that can comply with current health regulations on attendee numbers, physical distancing and face mask requirements. Our facilities are required to comply and therefore will not be permitted to rent to any event that may not meet local and state health requirements.
Please Remember: • Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds or more. • Do not join any activity if you or your child are not feeling well. • Respectfully maintain 6 feet of distance between yourself and others at all times. • Wear a face covering at all times indoors & when social distancing cannot be maintained outdoors.

Join this technology-focused class that allows youth to learn introductory cyber skills in an inclusive environment that encourages problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. This session, kids will be learning stop motion animation. This is a great way to encourage s.t.e.a.m. concepts and provides children with a fun combination of storytelling and technology use. Stop motion is a filming technique where pictures are taken of objects that are moved in small increments. When the pictures are put together, it makes the objects appear to be moving (Isle of Dogs and Coraline are famous examples of this technique). To make these movies, we use flip books, iPhones/iPads, and free apps called Stop Motion Studio. CRS# 21218

A staff mentor will guide young men further into a holistic process of growth and transformation that includes four areas of human development: emotional, spiritual, psychological, social, and intellectual. The journey begins by exploring young men’s challenges, strengths, and coping strategies formed after a premature loss of love and protection. Then council members are guided through a process to rediscover a sustaining internal resource of protection, security, and belonging. The journey continues to build upon individual and collective resources to reclaim or create dreams, develop goals, increase social and cooperative skills, and choose and apply transformative behaviors in their relationships and activities in order to overcome barriers and create lives of contribution, meaning, and connection. Learn Water Safety at the Redding Aquatic Center 32
Summer Safely to Summer Fun. In Redding, we are surrounded by endless opportunities for fun in and around the water. But having access to so many lakes, rivers, waterfalls and swimming pools requires responsibility and education, too. Redding Recreation is committed to ensuring that community members of all ages are water-safe. That’s why we offer a full line up of water safety classes - including Spring and Summer swim lessons, American Red Cross Certification Courses, Diving Lessons and the Jr. Lifeguard Program. Swim lessons are more than just an opportunity to have your littles gain comfort in the water. The skill sets developed in our classes are a necessity. Swimming lessons have the power to reduce childhood drowning by 88%. Teach your kids young how to protect themselves and others in the water. Water Safety classes aren’t just for kids. Even if you are an adult who has grown up in and around water, taking time to refresh your water safety skills could save someone’s life - including your own. Classes begin in May. You can register today at reddingrecreation.org. Meanwhile, here are four crucial safety reminders:
The color of your swimsuit matters. While it’s fun to wear every color in the rainbow, some colors are much safer options than others where swimming is concerned. What can be seen in smooth water can completely disappear with water agitation. Choose a swimsuit with bright and contrasting colors. Neon pink and neon orange are ideal. Think of it like wearing reflective clothing at night to help motorists to see you better. Avoid dark colors that could be mistaken for leaves, dirt, or a shadow. A white swimsuit is the hardest to spot in a pool with a light-colored bottom, as it disappears almost entirely with any water agitation. Life jackets are for everyone. Most boating fatalities occur as a result of drowning. If you go boating, wear a life jacket. That goes for kids and adults. It may feel strange to wear one if you know how to swim, but it could be the very thing that saves your life in an emergency
"Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injuryrelated death for children ages 1–4. Our goal is to make sure every local child is water safe, especially during hot summers." —Jenny Moore, Redding Aquatics Supervisor
Effective supervision saves lives. Effective supervision requires a mental commitment! Make sure that when you are in charge of supervising others in or around water, you are not reading a book, checking your phone, socializing, coaching, doing yard work or participating in any other tasks that could distract you from being fully engaged in supervising. Stay safe, smart, alert and engaged in and around the water!
Know your skill level. Even those who would generally consider themselves “good swimmers” are at risk of drowning while trying to save someone else. Be aware that a panicked child, no matter their age, has the power to drown an adult.

Follow these 4 simple steps to determine what swim lesson class is best for your swimmer. Group Swim Lessons Swim lessons taken by class. Spring lessons are four 30-minute lessons completed M–Th in one week. Summer and lessons are comprised of eight 30-minute lessons completed M–Th over the course of 2 weeks. Sign up for as many sessions as you’d like! Our goal is to get your swimmer comfortable & skilled in and around the water. Twice-a-Week Option for Parent & Me Classes Swim lessons 4 times a week might be too taxing on the littlest swimmers, so we have created a special 2/Week Option for Parent & Me age groups in the summer only! You still get eight 30-minute classes, but they happen twice a week over the course of 4 weeks instead of over 2 weeks like regular classes. Private Lessons You might want to sign up for Private swim lessons to give you or your swimmer more individual attention. We have private lessons available individually or private lesson packages, which include 4 private lessons that take place in a one week session. Lessons are for all ages, toddlers to adults! Individual Private Lessons Private: $25/student/half-hour Semi-Private: $20/two students/half-hour; Semi-Private lessons are for 2 students who will be signed up together and are at a similar skill level. Great for siblings & friends. Private Lesson Package Deal Private: $82/four 1-on-1 private swim lessons Semi-Private: $124/four 2-on-1 private swim lessons for students who will be signed up together and are at a similar skill level. Great for siblings & friends.
1
Step 1. Choose an age group
Swim lessons are divided first by age group. The chart at the right breaks the groups into Parent & Me, Preschool, & School Age. Aqua Athletes are school-age students who are more confident in the water and are ready for more of a challenge. You will select your swim lessons from age group first.
2
Step 2. Choose the water skill level
After age, swim lessons are divided by skill & confidence level. If your child is timid around the water, start at the very beginning of the lesson tier and move your way up during the season. If your child is confident, likes the water, and likes putting their face in the water, you can decide which skill level to start with. It is always recommended to start low and grow into the appropriate level.
3
Step 3. Select your session & time slot
Swim lessons are divided into sessions: Spring & Summer. Choose the week your child can attend (session), and select the time slot you can commit to that week. Swim lessons will be held at the same time each day.
4
Step 4. Register Online Search & register online for swim lessons. These will be organized by age group and skill level (fish name).
To schedule private lessons, call the Recreation Office at 225.4095 or the Redding Aquatic Center (after June 10th) at 245.7247.

It’s recommended that all participants carry their own insurance coverage. Waiver: In consideration for being allowed to participate in City of Redding recreational programs, I accept the terms and conditions required for participation, and agree to indemnify and hold harmless the City of Redding, its employees, agents, volunteers, officials and officers (collectively the City) from and against any injury, damage, claims, actions or suits arising out of my participation, or that of the child listed below, including those caused by negligence of the City and/or any dangerous condition of property of the City and further agree to defend and indemnify the City from and against any injury, damage, claims, actions or suits arising out of or connected with my participation or that of the child listed below (further agree to take responsibility to insure all registered minor children) and assume all risks for any injuries received. I further represent and warrant that I am advised of the existence of California Civil Code § 1542, which provides as follows: A general release does not extend to claims which the creditor does not know or suspect to exist in his favor at the time of executing the release, which if known by him must have materially affected his settlement with the debtor. Notwithstanding this provision, this will constitute a full release in accordance with its terms. I knowingly and voluntarily waive the provisions of Section 1542, as well as any other statute, law or rule of similar effect, and acknowledge and agree that this waiver is an essential and material term of my participation or that of the child listed below. Payee/participant may also request an account credit that is processed immediately. Transfers: Participants may request a transfer to another program seven (7) days prior to the first class meeting, provided the fee for the new program is equal to or greater than the original program fee. Severability: If any term clause or provision of this Waiver, Release of Liability and Disclaimer is held to be illegal, invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of this Release of Liability shall not be affected thereby, and shall be enforceable to the fullest extent permitted by law. I have read and understand the above agreement and fully assume all risks for any injuries. It is understood that the City of Redding does not provide health or accident insurance for participants. Consent is given for the leader in charge to perform first–aid or take any other emergency action he/she deems necessary in his/her best judgment.
