Curious, Courageous, Christ-Led What do you want most in life? For the vast majority of us, the answer is “to be happy.” In a 2007 survey of more than 10,000 people from 48 countries, published in Perspectives on Psychological Sciences, happiness was viewed as more important than success, intelligence, knowledge, maturity, wisdom, relationships, wealth and meaning in life. Happiness is a good thing. Yet, both in my professional and personal experience, I’ve observed that when we focus solely on what we think will make us happy, we can lose track of what actually does.

The community has heard me speak time and again this year about curiosity. One of the most reliable and overlooked keys to happiness is cultivating and exercising our innate sense of curiosity. That’s because curiosity — a state of active interest or genuinely wanting to know more about something — creates an openness to unfamiliar experiences, laying the groundwork for greater opportunities to experience discovery, joy and delight.

Curiosity is something that can be nurtured and developed. With practice, we can harness the power of curiosity to transform everyday tasks into interesting and enjoyable experiences. We can also use curiosity to intentionally create wonder, intrigue and play out of almost any situation or interaction we encounter.

It all starts with wanting to know more. Over the holidays, I encourage our community, young and old, to find their inner Sherlock Holmes. Our innate curiosity can easily become dulled by the tedium and familiarity of daily routine, even or most especially school! Reawakening it starts with shifting how we pay attention — even in situations we’ve experienced a thousand times before. Here are some tips for shifting our attention and boosting curiosity: find out something new every day; try something you have never done before; make new friends; try something again that you had already decided you disliked… sometimes our tastes and interests have changed over time and we haven’t realised; become a better listener by treating every conversation as an opportunity to discover something truly interesting and thought-provoking.

We also explored the concept of courage. My own curiosity has led me to explore what it is to be courageous and how this relates to kindness. Maya Angelou was an African-American poet, author,

memoirist, actress, director, producer, writer, singer, dancer, and civil rights activist. She spoke about courage this way: “I would encourage us to try our best to develop courage. It’s the most important of all the virtues, because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. You can be anything erratically — kind, fair, true, generous, all that. But to be that thing time after time, you need courage. We need to develop courage, and we need to develop it in small ways first.

You develop a little courage, so that if you decide, ‘I will not stay in rooms where women are belittled; I will not stay in company where races, no matter who they are, are belittled; I will not take it; I will not sit around and accept dehumanizing other human beings’ — if you decide to do that in small ways, and you continue to do it — finally you realize you’ve got so much courage. Imagine it — you’ve got so much courage that people want to be around you. They get a feeling that they will be protected in your company.”

That we should all cultivate such courage to be kind.

Therefore, my second holiday homework for us all is to practice this courage to be kind every day.

Then there is Christ–Led. What does it mean to follow Christ each day? My mind went straight away to our most senior graduate this year … Miss Frieberg, retiring from school after 40 years of teaching and 27 years at Redeemer. Miss Frieberg encompasses all of these: being curious, being courageous and being Christ-Led. I am reminded of the many acts of kindness and service I have witnessed from our students and staff this year.

Each year our students and staff readily fill our weekly roster for the Helping Hands van, bringing comfort and companionship to those in our surrounding community for which this is in short supply. I have witnessed older students mentoring younger students in sporting teams, music groups, debating, chess, robotics and in many fields of study. Students have once again supported charities such as Shave for a Cure, Operation Christmas Child, Gifts of Grace and for the first time this year Sister Snips and Daughters of Cambodia with 30 of our senior girls cutting off their ponytails in support of these organisations. Beyond the academic accolades, sporting trophies, music awards and prizes, all very worthy endeavours, here is a group of young people who understand the heart of Christ.

I would like to thank all of our staff for their dedication and commitment to our students and our community this year. As I sat with each of our Year 12 students this year for lunch, time and time again they wished to relay to me their deep respect for our staff and their fellow students and that they felt cared for and known as individuals. This is the expression of community that is a pillar of what makes Redeemer special – that our hope is in Christ.

Finally, I wish to personally thank you all for this year.

Redeemer is truly a special community and it has been my deepest honour to be your Principal. As we close this year I extend to you all blessings as we lead up to the holy Christmas season and I wish safe travels and rest for you all.

Truth and the

WHOLE TRUTH During the last holidays, my travel buddy and I had the privilege of travelling to Germany. We purposely went at this time of year because it was close to 31 October. This has become the “official” date of the beginning of The Reformation.

While it has been widely accepted as the day which Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the Wittenberg Castle Church door, there is no evidence that he actually nailed them there. The guide who accompanied us on our tour said that it is a popular misconception.

There is no doubt however. He did write 95 theses challenging the church on many issues of belief because he posted these to his bishop and that is a fact. He followed the protocol of the day, wanting serious discussion among the clergy about the Christian faith.

We live in a world today that enjoys the results of his work 500 years ago. As I view history, I do not think Luther had any idea of the resulting ramifications the reformation made.

I find it strange that such an epic moment in history becomes enshrouded with other aspects that distracts from the central truth.

The Christmas story is a lot like that. I challenge you to take a moment of time to read the story straight from the Bible and contemplate the detail that has enveloped the event and transformed it into the story today. You will find it in two Gospels: Matthew and Luke.

Take one small piece from the event as an example: the birth of Jesus.

Most plays/pantomimes that I have seen always include an “inn keeper” who invariably says, “There is no room at the inn” and so Mary gives birth to Jesus in a stable and lays the babe in a manger. When you read the texts (Luke in particular), there is no mention of an “inn keeper” let alone what he said.

The fact is that Jesus was born and laid in a manger. True God has become true man. Inn is better translated to “guest room” and most houses had a guest room. Mary and Joseph would have searched out family and because of Mary’s condition and the distance involved would have arrived after another relative had taken up the offer of the room. This is the most likely scenario.

Another thought is: Mary was pregnant and she was not yet married to Joseph. I am sure that this created a stigma for them. Perhaps family received them reluctantly and so a stable attached to the house was a good option.

It is interesting that when the wise men arrive, they see the baby in a house, not a stable.

Jesus was born into this world; vulnerable and into unpleasant circumstances, yet He was the greatest gift of all time. I hope and pray that you are not distracted from this central truth and have a wonderful Christmas.

A New

TIME CAPSULE

Earlier this year on 28 February 2017, we opened a time capsule which was laid in the grounds of the College in 1992. As part two of this process, we were honoured to have had representatives from the Rochedale Springwood Lions Club join us on 14 November at Redeemer to seal a new time capsule, commemorating the 10th birthday of our Junior School!

Representatives from each of the Junior School classes each placed items inside of the new time capsule, together with a letter from the Principal, Mrs Tanya Crooks and Assistant to the Principal, Miss Rosilyn Frieberg. The time capsule will be opened on 4 February 2030 in Redeemer’s 50th year.

We’re grateful for the support and generosity of Rochedale Springwood Lions Club for donating this new time capsule, as a way of commemorating 100 years of Lions Club International!

THE COLLEGE Redeemer Celebrates the 500th Reformation Redeemer Lutheran College has celebrated the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with a range of special events across 2017. Most notably was the Reformation 500 Celebration Concert at St Peters Lutheran College on Saturday 29 July together with Faith Redlands, Grace Rothwell & Caboolture, St Peters Indooroopilly & Springfield.

All of Redeemer’s Senior School ensembles joined forces together with the five other Lutheran Colleges, culminating in a mass choir of 350 students conducted by Redeemer’s David Law. On Friday 27 October, Redeemer enjoyed a wonderful whole school worship service in Redeemer Chapel to acknowledge and celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The service involved a lot of student input including items from the Senior Worship Band and Senior Singers. Our School Captains and Year 6 Leaders led us in prayer and student artwork and interviewing helped deliver the message. Mrs Stelzers address also importantly reminded all in attendance of why the Reformation is still relevant and indeed, why it is still worth celebrating today.

Redeemer Showcase: Celebrate 2017 Redeemer Lutheran College opened its doors on Wednesday 18 October for our annual Twilight Tour and Experience Redeemer Showcase. Parents, friends and many new guests to Redeemer enjoyed the amazing display of student work from the creative industries, technologies, Year 6 Robotics, together with scrumptious refreshments provided by Redeemer’s Hospitality students.

The night concluded with a Film & TV Gala Evening upstairs in the Multi-Media Theatre where an incredible selection of student work was presented on the big screen! Well done to all students and staff involved with tonight’s Showcase!

Helping Hands turns 3!

HANDS. Hands come in all shapes and sizes. Big hands, small hands.

Hands that can tell a thousand stories. But how much can a pair of hands do?

These words were introduced in a video at our Helping Hands Junior School chapel service on Wednesday 2 August. This chapel service was a celebration of three successful years of operation of the “Little Yellow” Helping Hands van. The Helping Hands van serves the Mt Gravatt community in partnership with Our Saviour Lutheran Church, providing fellowship and grocery items each Friday night.

Hands from Redeemer Junior School worked together in service to fill the Helping Hands pantry as part of a Two-Can Appeal.

Approximately 1,200 items were collected from the Junior School classrooms by the Year 6 Service Leaders.

Following the chapel service, a special presentation of $609.95 was made to Mr Stiller by Student Council from the Term 2 weekly chapel donations, to purchase fuel, tyres and other van essentials.

“When it’s a Helping Hand, we believe that every hand can make a difference.” Clearly, the entire Redeemer community is committed to the value of SERVICE in our community and in helping to make a difference. May God continue to bless the many hands that make up our Helping Hands Team!

Across 2017, a range of activities have been celebrated to mark the 10th birthday of Redeemer’s Junior School which opened in 2007. The year culminated in a party to which Brisbane was invited to on Friday 17 November!

Ken, Nicky and Steve along with the entire 96.5FM School Excursion team headed to Redeemer Lutheran College for a morning of fun and excitement to help celebrate Redeemer’s special occasion!

Students enjoyed fun on the bouncy castle, 96five Boxing Ring, Tennis Queensland Skills and Drills, First Swing Golf, Surf Life Saving, Scouts Queensland, and ‘Get Ready’ storm campaign, while 7 News weather presenter, Tony Auden, came along to help out with some interviews on the day too!

Appointment of

D E P U T Y P R I N C I PA L

Mrs Nicole Gregory I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Nicole Gregory as the new Deputy Principal of Redeemer Lutheran College. Mrs Gregory replaces the role of Miss Rosilyn Frieberg who has retired, following 40 years of service to Lutheran Education.

Mrs Gregory was previously the Head of Middle School at Grace Lutheran College Rothwell where she has held a number of key leadership roles including Acting Deputy Principal and Head of Rothwell Campus, Acting Head of Grace Lutheran College Caboolture Campus, and Acting Principal of Grace Lutheran Primary School.

Mrs Gregory’s academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Education (Drama & Dance), Masters of Counselling, and Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Leadership. Mrs Gregory is also a graduate of the Lutheran Leadership Development Program attaining Lutheran leadership credentials in 2015. Her experience

within the areas of Risk and Compliance, Child Protection, Cocurricular involvement, Outdoor Education, as well as Coordinator of various Year levels over a period of time, will place us in good stead and support Redeemer into the future.

Outside of her professional career, Nicole is actively involved in her congregation at Living Faith Lutheran Church, Murrumba Downs, where she has a passion for worship through the creative ministries of dance, singing and drama. Nicole is married to David and they have two adult children, who both attended Lutheran schools.

Redeemer Barrel Prize Winners

Redeemer places second nationally in Maths Competition One of Redeemer’s Year 9 Maths teams has achieved second in the Term 4 HSFOL (Have Sum Fun Online) Maths competition. This is a national competition which involves solving very difficult Maths problems in a team of three or four. Students work together to solve questions online.

Redeemer students have been involved in this competition across Years 7, 8 and 9 this year. This is the second time that a team from Redeemer has been awarded since being involved with the competition over the last five years.

Congratulations to Emma Bures, Rachel Chiong, Sohini Kundu and Vivien Lu who placed second in the competition!

The Redeemer Parents & Friends Committee thanks everyone who supported the Redeemer Barrel again this year! The prize draw took place after the 2017 Junior School Celebration Ceremony. MISS FRIEBERG! Redeemer’s Assistant to the Principal, Miss Rosilyn Frieberg was honoured on Friday 24 November with a standing ovation by the Senior School students, parents and staff at the 2017 Senior School Celebration Ceremony.

Miss Frieberg was presented with a Lutheran Education Queensland Service Award acknowledging 40 Years of Service in Lutheran education; and a Lutheran Education Australia Service Award in public recognition of extended years of distinguished service to Lutheran education.

Miss Frieberg retires this year following 40 years of teaching, with 27 of those at Redeemer Lutheran College.

Miss Frieberg personally produced 14 college musicals over her 27 years at Redeemer. In recognition of this, Rachael Stelzer penned the following lyrics to the tune of “The Very Model of a Modern Major General” from “Pirates of Penzance” as a tribute to Rosilyn.

New Principal

Master Plan

The year commenced with the arrival at the College of the fourth, and first female Principal. I was overwhelmed with the warm welcome that was extended to me and this has continued throughout the year. It has been a great privilege to get to know the members of the College community from the opening service held for our Prep to Year 12 students through to the final Celebration Ceremonies held in the final week. During my time this year, I have attended many events including the musical, art gallery displays, sporting fixtures and grand finals, robotic tournaments, eisteddfods and concerts.

Early this year, the College embarked on a master planning process in consultation with the College community. Architect firm Fulton Trotter, headed up by Mark Trotter (a former parent of the College), worked with all sectors of the community to envision what the College should look like from 2030 and beyond to cater for the future educational needs of our students.

The College also sought expert advice from Tony Ryan, a learning futurist and Dr Stephen Brown of the Brown Collective, an international expert and policy advisor in the area of change management and organisational development in education.

The driving force for this plan is the implementation of a College wide approach to teaching and learning focusing on the development of future skills, namely collaboration, creativity, adaptability, leadership, ethics, persistence, empathy, global citizenship, patience and excellence.

Added to this, many parents took the time to speak with me either informally or at various Parents and Friends meetings. I had the pleasure of hosting every student from Prep to Year 6 in the College Boardroom and my office to see what it is like to be College Principal. Some of my best ideas have originated from the exciting conversations that were had during these visits. I also had the privilege of hosting for lunch every Year 12 student. They shared with me their journey through Redeemer and their hopes for the future. Time and again these young people spoke about how they felt valued and supported by College staff and of the fine friendships they had developed with their fellow students over their time here.

Curious, Courageous, Christ-led This year we focused on a whole of College theme – Curious, Courageous and Christ-led. We explored these concepts through devotions, staff professional development, Junior School Assembly awards, conversations and newsletter articles. Wherever I went, the community was able to speak about these concepts and how they were essential as part of modern life preparation. We saw these concepts in action through class work, co-curricular activities and service learning opportunities at all levels of the College. The College will continue to focus on these attributes along with its core values of Integrity, Care, Excellence, Service and Self-discipline.

The 2030 Plus master plan will have its official launch at the start of 2018. Further community consultation will be held early next year to determine which projects will be chosen as the first stage of the master plan for a possible construction commencement in the early 2020’s.

Celebrating 10 Years of the Junior School This year the College celebrated 10 years of the Junior School. From its inception in 2007 as a single stream P-4 school, with two streams of Year 5, to a triple stream P-6 school with just over 500 students today; the College has a great deal to be thankful for. Some of the activities held included the opening of a 25 year time capsule and the laying down of a new time capsule, donated by the Springwood Logan Lions Club to be opened on 4 February 2030 to celebrate 50 years of Redeemer Lutheran College. Additionally the Junior School hosted a 96.5FM celebration morning with the radio station broadcasting live from Fred Davey Oval.

Reformation 50/500 Celebrations This year the Lutheran Church of Australia and all of its schools celebrated 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Wittenberg church. Here in Australia we are also celebrating 50 years of unification of the Lutheran Church in to the Lutheran Church of Australia. As part of these significant anniversaries, Redeemer Lutheran College held its own Reformation service with students from Prep to Year 12.

Our singers and musician joined a 300 strong choir to sing traditional Lutheran hymns at a joint concert with a number of other Lutheran schools at St Peters Lutheran College, Indooroopilly.

Teaching and Learning Staff in both the Junior and Senior School have participated in a wide range of professional development activities this year. In the Senior School, there has been an emphasis on understanding and preparing for the introduction of ATAR from 2019 for 202 external examinations.

A number of our staff have been appointed senior markers for subject exams across the state. I personally attended the two-day QCAA Principals Conference where all senior educational leaders were briefed on the upcoming changes and how to best prepare at the school level.

A review of the senior subject offerings was undertaken in the light of the phasing out of old syllabus board subjects and the introduction of the new style “general” and “applied” subjects offered under ATAR. For example, Home Economics will be phased out statewide and students will now be able to take the new subject of Food Science and Nutrition. In addition to preparing for the new suite of subjects, the College has undertaken a review of its Curriculum Leader structure to balance workload for staff and to have subject specialists leading an integration of curriculum and ATAR preparation from Years 7 through 12. Our Current Year 9 students are experiencing their first taste of the new subjects in Year 10 next year.

Staff in the Junior School have focused on developing students’ future skills through multi-disciplinary project based learning and service learning. We witnessed wonderful examples of this approach in Year 2 through their STEM and Indigenous and Technology projects and in Year 5 with their integrated Art, Geography, English and Science unit on animals and habitats. Other year levels experienced new subjects such as Coding and Robotics.

Across Prep to Year 12, all of our staff had a focus on developing units of work under the Art and Science of Teaching (ASOT) framework, with a unified pedagogical approach across the whole of the College. These activities are part of a five-year professional development plan that incorporates annual professional learning plans for all teachers and cyclical appraisal processes.

NAPLAN Results 2017 In 2017, Redeemer’s NAPLAN results continued to reflect the academic success experienced across the College. For the fifth consecutive year, our student scores were higher than State and National averages in all areas tested in every year level. Tracking of cohorts over the last nine years continues to indicate that Redeemer students improve at a greater rate than their State and National counterparts.

Learning Mentor Time This year the College introduced Learning Mentor Time (LMT). All students in Years 7-12 participated in the Learning Mentor journey, a program developed to enhance student learning and wellbeing.

This innovative program will continue in 2018 with all students in the Senior School having two lessons per week scheduled with their learning mentor. One student, in their feedback to a recent survey, explained “more individual study time actually helped me to complete my work on time and made submitting my work that much easier. And the personal topics that were spoken about during LMT time was useful as they gave

me good strategies and ideas to cope with some of my problems as an adolescent.”

Parents responded with “We have really appreciated the time and effort each individual teacher has taken to help mentor each student in such a time rushed era.

I think LMT is a great program that with surveys like these will grow with strength each year.” The College will publish further feedback on the survey data at the start of 2018.Thank you to all those who took the time to participate in the survey.

Redeemer Plus In 2017 Redeemer introduced Redeemer Plus to the Junior School. This program assisted in identifying students in our community who would benefit from further learning enrichment and extension. Over 30 of our Junior School students were involved across the year and are to be commended on their commitment to academic extension. In 2018 Mr Michael Trott will extend this program into the Senior School.

Highlights to this program was our Year 6 students being awarded First place in the national competition held at the University of Queensland. Also of note was our rookie Year 6 robotics team who were awarded overall champions at the recent Brisbane Region competition of the FIRST Lego League competition held at Grace Lutheran College. This team then competed at the national competition in Sydney at the beginning of December.

Performing Arts The Performing Arts year started with the highly successful musical, “The Music Man”.

It performed to sell out audiences who were rapt by the professional level of the musical orchestra as well as the extremely talented cast. Comments from many of those that attended were that they would not expect to see a more professional production at a state or national level.

Frieberg will produce for the College. Miss Frieberg has produced the last 14 musicals over her 27 years at Redeemer.

This year we also saw a number of events where Lutheran schools joined to extend and enjoy music making. Early in the year, Redeemer hosted St Andrews, LORDS, Faith Redlands and Trinity Lutheran Colleges for a workshop with ARIA Award winning A Capella group “The Idea of North” culminating in a joint concert in Redeemer Chapel. This was a spectacular event and a wonderful opportunity for our students to work and sing with professional artists.

We look forward to more of these joint opportunities in 2018.

Elsewhere our music groups had huge success at such events as the Queensland Youth Music Awards achieving first place for Intermediate Concert Band, Senior Concert Band and Senior Singers. At the Gold Coast Eisteddfod, Senior Singers once again were awarded first place. At MusicFest, Senior Concert Band was awarded the muchcoveted Platinum Award in the highest grade possible, “A” Grade Secondary concert bands. At the same competition Chamber Strings, Intermediate Concert Band, Year 6 Band and Junior Concert Band all came away with Gold Awards in their chosen category.

This was an outstanding year of competition for our many ensembles, they and the music staff are to be congratulated on their hard work and fine achievements.

Drama continues to provide students with wonderful opportunities to extend their art form and a number of wonderful productions were held this year”. Film and Television also celebrated a years’ worth of hard work at their film night as part of the Experience Redeemer Showcase evening.

Redeemer teams entered the “Race Around Ekka” film competition and two of our teams placed second, an amazing achievement.

Art has excelled this year in a number of areas. Kareen Haddad (Year 10) represented the College with a portrait entry in the Young Archie competition. A big congratulations to Ethan Cho (Year 9) and Simone Coetzee (Year 8) who were finalists in the Beersheba 100th Anniversary Art Competition. The annual Pavement Art competition across both sub-schools remains one of the House competitions

where students can build relationships, and exercise their creativity in a fun and meaningful way. Once again, this year our Year 11 and graduating Year 12 students have their work displayed as part of an exhibition at the Logan Art Gallery.

Camps The College sent students off to camps from Years 3 to 11 as part of our commitment to outdoor education. For the first time in a number of years, our Year 9 students attended Mt Binga Outdoor Education Centre, which is owned and operated by Immanuel Lutheran College. Students and parents found the experience very fulfilling and commented on the renewed emphasis on the spiritual development as well as physical and social development as a feature of this camp. Year 6 also had a fabulous time once again in Canberra. As part of our life preparation for our students the College continues to place an emphasis on developing holistic education.

Sport Redeemer Lutheran College had a memorable year in sport in 2017. This was the first year that the College had competed in the Greater Brisbane Conference (GBC) competition. Overwhelming feedback from students and staff was that the matches were very competitive and promoted good sportsmanship. Overall, the College won thirteen premierships across the trimesters in the fields of Tennis, Volleyball, Netball and Soccer and placed second overall in the competition for all three trimesters - an outstanding achievement! All teams are to be commended for their perseverance and dedication to their sport.

The College had a very successful JTAS season with a record number of teams fielded from Junior School students. Once again, parents and students reported high levels of satisfaction with the opportunities offered for students to develop their sporting prowess.

Additionally the College was very strongly placed in carnival sports winning overall aggregate first place and per capita shield in the Logan District along with second place per capita for cross country and first place per capita for Athletics

Service At Redeemer, students are encouraged to be involved in community service activities.

In 2017, Junior School students made a decision to donate their weekly chapel offerings to Gifts of Grace from Australian Lutheran World Service and set themselves a very lofty goal of raising $5,000 to partner with a village. Year 6 students went from class to class to encourage the community in it’s giving along with busking at lunchtimes and raising awareness among the crowd that attended the 96.5FM morning event. Along with a donation from a staff group, the students managed to raise over the $5,000 target.

In the Senior School, the Student Committees enthusiastically ran activities including ReCykle raising money for the Leprosy Mission, World’s Greatest Shave raising funds for the Leukemia Foundation, and Lunch on the Green raising money for the Orange Sky Laundry. For the first time this year, 30 of our Year 12 ladies chose to cut off their ponytails to assist with Sister Snips, a charity that creates wigs for cancer patients as well as raise funds for Daughters of Cambodia which changes lives for victims of human trafficking.

Across the whole College, students were involved in delivering Easter gifts to local nursing homes and Meals on Wheels, and sent over 60 Christmas gift boxes to third world countries as part of Operation Christmas Child.

In addition to the numerous community service activities, the whole College continues to maintain support of the “Helping Hands” van. The yellow van has been in action now for three and a half years, and continues to touch the lives of those in our community less fortunate than ourselves. 2017 has seen strong support by students across the College as they have donated goods, and by Senior School students as they have given up their time on a Friday evening to help on the van roster. In the wider community, Our Saviour Lutheran Church continues to staff the van over the holiday breaks.

Bus

Our annual Grandparents’ Day was once again a great success with over 800 grandparents attending on the day. We are grateful for the involvement for all members of the school community as it enriches the lives of us all. Always memorable is our annual Anzac dawn service, which was much appreciated by the early risers.

Additionally a Prep to Year 12 Anzac Day service was held later in the morning and it was wonderful to witness the whole community come together to mark this important national day. The College’s annual Redeemer Showcase held earlier this term presented a rich, diverse and very high quality display of student work from the Visual Arts, Design and Technology, Home Economics, Information Technology and Film and TV. This event, held in the Senior School Resource Centre, combined with the largest Twilight College Tour ever held with over 180 community members registered to tour the school and visit the Showcase.

After numerous requests from the College community to consider a dedicated bus run for Redeemer students, the College is proud to announce that this service will commence from the start of 2018. Further information about this initiative is available on the College website. We look forward to seeing our new bus used to transport students to camps, excursions, music and sporting events as well as to and from home each day.

Normally our biggest event of the year for the community is the annual Redeemer Fair. Unfortunately this year it was cancelled due to extremely wet weather. I would like to thank once again all of the volunteers, Parents and Friends Committee members who planned and worked so hard. The College has announced that the fair will be held next year on Saturday 20 May, 2018.

Farewells It is with sadness that we farewell staff, both teaching and non-teaching, who have served the College for a number of years.

We thank each of them for their service to the families of the College and wish them all the very best for the future.

This year we especially farewell Miss Rosilyn Frieberg who is retiring after 27 years at Redeemer and 40 years in Lutheran education. Also retiring after 28 years at the College is Mrs Karen Flowers who has worked in Senior School Administration.

Both ladies were recognised with a Lutheran Education Australia Service Award for their long standing service to Lutheran education.

At the governance level of the College, the Council has worked diligently in such items as the Strategic Plan, the Master Plan, and a host of other governance matters. I thank College Council for their dedication, guidance and support of me personally over my first year as Principal.

The year has indeed been full and very rewarding and I look forward to the year ahead as we partner with parents in the education of the young people whose care we are entrusted with.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Year 1 – Helping others Each day students in our Prep and Year 1 cohort helped the teacher assistants unpack and put together their obstacle course in the playground. This was a great help to the teacher assistants, after all, many hands make light work. It was wonderful to see the students learning the importance of working as a team.

Year 2 – Making a difference

Curious, Courageous and Christ-Led This year the students and staff in the Junior School have embraced Mrs Crooks’ challenge of being Curious, Courageous and Christ-Led and in all that they do. It has been wonderful to walk alongside and witness students and staff rise to this challenge. There have been so many examples of how the Junior School community has used their hearts, heads and hands to do one or any number of these things.

In so doing, they have served not only themselves, but our Redeemer community in so many ways.

As the year draws to a close and Christmas approaches, it seems appropriate to share some of the special ways that the Junior School students and staff have been Christ-led this semester. What a true blessing it is to be able to share these special moments and actions with you. It just goes to show that everyone can make a difference.

Mrs Susan Hawke from ALWS led our Year 2 students in discovering the plight of people in developing countries as many struggle daily to access clean drinking water. The students knew about people having to ‘walk for water’, thanks to Awareness Week earlier in the year, but what they didn’t know, was that the water people walked for, was often not clean or healthy for drinking. Mrs Hawke challenged our students to improve the lives of people in developing countries by designing a way to make dirty water clean.

Though it sounds simple, their task meant that the students had to understand the properties of water, states of water and the water cycle and know what healthy drinking water looks like. They also needed to investigate the properties of different materials and their effectiveness in filtering sediment.

Their designs were only allowed to contain materials that could be found in the communities of the people they were tasked to help. To their credit, and their surprise, most of the groups created clean, sediment free water through experimentation and determination, which they showcased ‘in action’ to Mrs Hawke, their parents and the school community. This gave the students the opportunity to present their work, but also use their knowledge to raise awareness of the needs of others in the world around us.

Year 3 – Bucket fillers The students decided to fill each other’s days with positive thoughts, making each other smile and feel valued. They decorated their own bucket and attached a paper bag to it. The paper bags became the post box for each student’s bucket. Students wrote little anonymous notes to each other, drew pictures or wrote a letter of encouragement. This was a wonderful example of sharing God’s love and creating a sense of inclusiveness within the cohort.

Year 5 – Christian Studies The Year 5 cohort used information learned in Christian Studies to plan and organise special Christmas ‘helping hands’ for people in the community that may be in need of an extra measure of love and support during the Christmas period. One class put together hampers and individual gifts with Christmas cards that were given out to people during the college’s regular Friday night Helping Hands visit to members of the local community. Their teacher Mr Weil participated in the Helping Hands visit to see the impact the students gifts had.

Another Year 5 class working in conjunction with one of their parents prepared welcome gift bags for a domestic violence organization. Yet another real life example of the students being hands-on in their learning and using their knowledge to serve others within the community.

Year 6 – Gifts for Grace Inspiration and Action Throughout the semester, our Year 6 cohort studied ethical frameworks and decision making processes. This study created some great discussion and inspired the cohort to set a goal of raising awareness and fundraising as a whole school to be able to

contribute to the ALWS (Australian Lutheran World Service) Gifts of Grace campaign by sponsoring a village in Cambodia. The students felt that this particular Gift of Grace was going to provide the greatest amount of good to the greatest number of people and have lasting impacts for generations to come.

To do this, the Year 6’s decided the Junior School needed to raise $5,000. To raise awareness and funds, the Year 6’s actively engaged the whole Redeemer community by: • Busking throughout the Junior and Senior Schools. Those students who were confident in playing a musical instrument, shared their gifts and talents to raise money for their cause.

• Speaking on the radio during the 96.5FM Breakfast show during the Junior School 10 year celebration morning. This helped to raise awareness to the broader Brisbane community of the life changing work that ALWS does but also allowed the students to talk about their goal in wanting to sponsor a village.

• Students visited classes to spread awareness of the work of ALWS and encourage students to bring in a small amount of money for chapel offerings, each week, to help meet the goal.

•

Students spoke with teaching staff and parents about their goal and how they felt it would make a difference to the lives of others.

The students used their passion and enthusiasm to inspire the Redeemer community to work together. Their enthusiasm was contagious and spread amongst the community. Donations came from staff groups, parents, grandparents and students. It was a truly inspiring thing to watch a group of passionate students working so hard to achieve a goal that would benefit the lives of others they had not even met. They were being Christ-Led in all that they were doing, to make a difference in the lives of a village community in Cambodia.

Year 6 Readers Cup

The Quest Challenge – International Finalists!

Readers Cup is a competition that is organised by the Queensland Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Readers Cup is for students who love reading and are enthusiastic about it. It allows readers to compete against other students who have the same passion for reading as they have.

On Saturday, 11 November three of our Year 6 students Dominic Duval, Alex Black and Trya Arthur competed in the State Final of The Quest – an academic challenge facilitated by BRAINWays Education.

This year Redeemer hosted the South Brisbane regional finals for Readers Cup on Thursday, 15 June 2017, with approximately 27 schools participating. Our team of Annabelle Marshall 6AH, Tyra Arthur 6HB, Lilly Parkes 6HB, Ryan Wang 6HB, Jasmin Wu 6LC achieved second place overall. What a wonderful sight…so many young people enthusiastic about their reading. A big thank you also to our 28 Year 6 students who volunteered to help run the event and volunteers from Our Saviour Lutheran Church; their service was outstanding.

The State Final was held at UQ on Saturday and consisted of three 90 minute challenges focusing on the disciplines of Mathematics, Science and Humanities.

Theories of Relativity, GPS tracking, triangulation, vectors, what is knowledge and philosophy were some of the aspects which our students grappled with alongside of other teams in the Year 4-6 section.

At the presentations we were over the moon to be awarded: • Humanities – 2nd Place • Mathematics – 1st Place • Science – 2nd Place • Overall 1st place!

Book Week Costume Parade What an amazing parade in our Junior School on Friday, 25 August as we celebrated the finale to our Book Week celebrations of “Escape to Everywhere!” Well done students, staff and parents on some fantastic and creative costumes!

These results were a wonderful recognition of the way the three students, in sessions lasting a total of 9 hours over two separate days, were able to use Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking and Collaboration to apply knowledge to which they were introduced in a four and a half hour day a mere 3 weeks ago.

They now move on to the International Final on 9 December also being held at UQ.

Year 6 Robotics National Finalists On Sunday, 12 November the Brisbane Regional Competition of the FIRST LEGO League Hydro Dynamics Competition was held at Grace Lutheran College. Redeemer entered the competition for the very first time with a very keen bunch of Year 6 students. This team has been working throughout Term 4 to prepare a robot for the robot games as well as a project element presenting an innovative solution for a problem within the human water cycle.

Our team were incredible all day. They participated in three robot games, robot design presentation and presented their project. They received such positive feedback from the judges who told them they exemplified team spirit, had the most creative presentation of the day and demonstrated the FIRST LEGO league values throughout the competition.

These students excitedly sat through the presentation ceremony congratulating all the teams who were presented with individual category prizes. As we came to the end of the presentations the presenter spoke about how excited he was to be presenting the overall winner to a team who had entered for the very first time. The RLC Year 6 Robotics team were named the Champions of the competition and were presented with an incredible LEGO trophy!

Congratulations to our Year 6 Robotics who competed in the National Finals in Sydney on 1-3 December!

SENIOR SCHOOL Ever Present, Now and Always Transitioning from one phase to another phase in life is essential and necessary. Whilst transition brings excitement and joy, it can also fill us with fear and anxiety, as we experience disruption of our usual routine and new challenges. When changes or disruption occurs in our life, it usually means that what follows will be a period of growth and learning.

Our current Year 6 students joined students from other schools to attend the Orientation Day to our Senior School on 23 November, 2017. The students were very curious to find out all about the Senior School and showed courage as they walked in to the Chapel for the beginning of orientation day.

Our Christ-led staff and leaders welcomed the students with a devotion on gifts of grace and introductory speeches about having fun, adopting a positive attitude and getting involved in school and co-curricular life.

The 2018 College Captains showed leadership on the day by running various activities, serving the Year 6 students by engaging them in a scavenger hunt, tour and information about the Senior Resource Centre, an introduction to co-curricular activities and daily school life including the ins and outs of locks and lockers.

Celebrations included a sausage sizzle, cake and a lot of fun. This was a wonderful day for all students which demystified some Senior School myths.

In order to assist parents with their child’s transition to Year 7, parents were invited to an information night. This night assisted parents to get a picture of the expectations, routines and processes of the senior school, including the pastoral care system, curriculum and the cocurricular program offered at the College.

At the end of the year, we welcome students transitioning to high school, but we also, sadly, farewell our Year 12 students. The 2017 graduates celebrated their final year achievements with worship and a special presentations and speeches on Valedictory night. The students marked this occasion with a rousing Redeemer War Cry outside the Chapel marking the transition from school on to the next phase of their journey. I wish them well in their future endeavors.

In life, there will always be change, unexpected turns and the need to navigate through transitions, but the one constant that remains in our lives is God’s presence.

Sister Snips Raises $8,300 for Charity On Wednesday 18 October, Redeemer’s Community Service Committee hosted its ‘Sister Snips’ fundraiser where close to thirty Year 12 girls cut off their ponytails for charity! Their hair will be used for wigs for cancer patients, online donations to ‘Love Your Sister’ and cash donations to ‘Daughters of Cambodia’.

Lunch on the Green Community Service Committee’s annual ‘Lunch on the Green’ allowed us to enjoy the amazing winter weather whilst listening to the talented musical abilities of some of our Senior School students. The proceeds from the sausage sizzle and drinks stall will be donated to Orange Sky Australia. Thank you to all for supporting this popular event!

Year 8.1-2 Art and Years 9-10 Art were challenged to create an artwork to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Light Horse Charge which took place at Beersheba in Palestine. 31 October, 2017 was the 100 years anniversary of this event and Redeemer students were especially reminded of the Light Horseman at this year’s ANZAC Day ceremony. This competition encouraged students to study this lesser-known part of WW1 history and visually portray the ANZAC characteristics of mateship, courage, perseverance and sacrifice displayed by the Light Horsemen, with special reference to the interaction of horses and riders.

A selection of Redeemer Years 8 to 10 charcoal entries into the Beersheba 100 Year Anniversary Art Exhibition were selected to be on show in Melbourne. Congratulations to Merit Award recipients: Year 8 students- Alistair Chow, Joshua Cheung, Isaac Clarke; Year 9 students: Rachel Chiong, Ethan Cho, Evelynne Lee; Year 10 students: Ella Wenke, Teresa Poon and Jasmine Kaye. It is an exceptional achievement that Simone Coetzee’s work was award 5th Place and Ethan Cho, Year 9 was commended with a Medallion Award.

The Prize-winning ceremony was held on 18 August at Caulfield and Ethan travelled to Melbourne for the presentation. These top prizewinning entries were displayed at Caulfield Race Course at their big Beersheba Commemoration Day on 19 August, 2017 and then remained on display at Caulfield RSL until 31 October.

MUSIC A Landmark Year of Music at Redeemer!

2017 was an undeniably landmark year for Performance Music at Redeemer. The list of specific achievements for ensembles and individual musicians alike continues to be endlessly staggering and we could not be more proud of their superb efforts.

MR DAVID LAW Head of Performance Music

The year began with a rich and joyous production of one of Broadway’s most beloved stage musicals, Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man. The cast performed with tangible enthusiasm (led by an astonishingly commanding Peter Kleinschmidt as Professor Harold Hill), the design and backstage crew brought the show to life, and the student orchestra played the entire 1957 original Broadway score with panache and spirit. This is no small feat, and all students are to be commended for approaching the College musical, once again, with professionalism and great pride.

Despite occurring just four days after The Music Man, two of Redeemer’s Concert Bands competed in the Queensland Youth Music Awards. Both Intermediate Concert Band and Senior Concert Band received a Gold Award, with both ensembles winning their sections; Intermediate Concert Band received the Peter Campbell Perpetual Trophy for Secondary Intermediate Concert Bands, whilst Senior Concert Band was awarded the Sacbut Shield. Our College vocal ensembles also competed at these same awards, with Junior Choir placing third in their section whilst Senior Singers placed first, winning the Brisbane Chorale Perpetual Trophy for Auditioned Secondary Choir.

At the Redlands Eisteddfod, Intermediate String Ensemble, Intermediate Stage Band and The Fellas all placed in their sections.

Most impressively, Junior Concert Band won the Primary Beginner Band section despite only beginning to play together in Term 2 – this is a significant achievement, highlighting the strength of Redeemer’s Year 5 Band program. Senior Singers and Redeemer Chorale competed in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod, with Senior Singers awarded the highest choral prize, the Harley Mead Memorial Award for their performance in the Premier Grade choir section.

MusicFest saw Stage Band deliver their finest performance of the year, receiving a Silver Award in the ‘A Grade’ Stage Band section, whilst Junior Concert Band, Year 6 Band, Intermediate Concert Band all received a Gold Award in their respective sections. Chamber Strings, competing in the ‘A Grade’ string orchestra section received a Gold Award whilst Senior Concert Band competed in the ‘A Grade’ secondary concert band section and were awarded a Platinum Award, the highest possible award at this event. This is the second year in a row that students in Senior Concert Band have been awarded at this level, the only Queensland school band to have done so during these two years. All of these results are remarkable achievements from our College musicians, at all of their individual levels, and they are most-certainly to be congratulated on such fine commitment, persistence and hard-work.

Of course, there is far more to the Performance Music calendar than the aforementioned competitions, and 2017 also saw many unique, enriching events take place. Through concerts and workshops, Redeemer’s Senior School ensembles continue to foster the long-term relationship that has been established with the Queensland Youth Orchestra and, once again this year, numerous outstanding college musicians were successful in auditioning for and gaining a position within this inspiring and world-class organisation. These partnerships, and many others, bring great joy to all involved, with Redeemer’s students always stepping up to lead, support and make new friends – some that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Redeemer’s 2017 Concert Series was also full of inspiring music-making. The Junior School ‘Hootenanny’ saw the youngest members of our Redeemer Music family performing for the very first time, and our quarterly Solo Recital Series gave all students undertaking solo and group tuition with our first-class, peripatetic instrumental music tutors a stage to

share and develop their performing skills.

Our Senior School concerts featured performances of top-tier repertoire such as Three Australian Bush Songs (Singer Singers), Groovy Loops (Senior Concert Band), Parisian Thoroughfare (Stage Band) and original compositions for Chamber Strings by Year 12 Music Extension student and Music Captain, David Kwong, whilst also celebrating the achievements of our developing musicians in all of the Middle Years’ ensembles.

A sincerely warm thank you from all College students and staff is extended to the members of our Performance Music family who have given so much time and endless energy to the department – our Music Tutors and Accompanists. Their dedication and expertise is genuinely valued by all.

Finally, congratulations to our astounding Year 12 students on their many, many years of musical accomplishments, and for their good-humoured and vigorous leadership.

It must be mentioned that this graduating group of Year 12 students were part of the very first Year 5 Band in 2010, signifying

a major milestone in the College’s music program. It brings great joy to step back and consider that all students from Year 5 have had the opportunity to play an instrument at the highest possible level.

We hope that this sense of true, meaningful accomplishment and collaboration continues to flourish within all music students at Redeemer.

My personal philosophy comes from Colossians 3:12-14.

Why did you apply for this role, and what brought you to Redeemer?

A readiness for something new is what brought me to Redeemer. I have had a number of wonderful leadership experiences over the past 7 years and it is now time to share my gifts in a different context.

What are you looking forward to the most about being Deputy Principal of Redeemer?

I am looking forward to getting to know the students and staff and understanding the Redeemer way. I am keen to understand the strengths of the Redeemer community and then see what value I can add along the way. I am excited to learn new things in this role and look forward to particularly to working in the P to 12 environment.

I believe that love is the greatest gift we can share with each other. A love that comes from God requires wisdom and understanding in its execution. It acknowledges that while love can be comforting and caring and seem like a big teddy bear hug, that sometimes life can be tough and love may mean being firm to be fair, as we confront the truth no matter how hard that challenge might be.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone.

Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

What does true leadership mean to you?

As a balance between a transformational leader and a servant leader, I believe my role is to serve others by listening to the unheard voices of a community and considering how they form part of the narrative. As a leader, there is a time to be up front and share the vision or take the reins, there is also time to be in the middle of the experience walking

the journey with staff and students encouraging growth and contribution.

The leaders place can also be in the background, gently steering and protecting people quietly as they are given the freedom to develop and share their gifting, taking ownership of the journey. Finally as a leader, it is vital to celebrate success through the journey.

True leadership is about intuition and a wisdom that comes from God alone.

What are you most passionate about as an educator?

I am passionate about GRIT! Education for me is about growing people who are passionate learners, who persevere through the muddiness of an experience and find personal success as a result. I believe that Grit is a key factor in personal success and achievement. I love more than anything encouraging people through the tough stuff whether they are a young person or an adult. GRIT is a conduit to personal and professional growth.

How do you define success?

Success is attained when passion and perseverance come together and something new is learned or accomplished by an individual or a group of people. Success is not how many A’s you get for achievement or the medals or trophies you have on the shelf, success is about personal accomplishment which is really about effort and learning from your mistakes through failures and challenges. Success that comes from grit is what creates growth and ultimately creates a space for success.

What are some words of wisdom you would like to pass on to students?

When a challenge or conflict presents itself, no matter how difficult, don’t run from it, find a way to engage with it.

See it as a gift to learn something new about yourself, someone else or the situation and get some help to make your way through the muddiness of it.

At our recent Celebration Ceremonies, we recognised those who have served for ten and twenty years. Mr Darren Pope, Director of Leadership & School Improvement of Lutheran Education Queensland, presented the Lutheran Education Queensland Service Awards and the Lutheran Education Australia Service Award at our recent Senior School Celebration Ceremony on Friday 25 November and Junior School Celebration Ceremony on Tuesday 29 November 2016.

Lutheran Education Australia Service awards are presented to people who retire from service, in public recognition of more than twenty years of distinguished service. They have demonstrated a loyal commitment to Christian education in Lutheran schools and have given dedicated and exemplary Christian service.

Miss Rosilyn Frieberg - 40 Years Service The Lutheran Church of Australia thankfully acknowledges the faithful and committed service of Rosilyn Frieberg to Lutheran education over a period of forty years.

Rosilyn started in the Lutheran school system in 1978 when she joined the staff of Concordia Lutheran College in Toowoomba as a teacher of Commerce, Accounting and Economics, serving as a subject coordinator in two of these disciplines. In her thirteen years of service she excelled in the classroom but took on many other responsibilities as well. The chief one was the role of Senior Mistress which, for two years, included the job of being in charge of Girls Boarding. She contributed broadly to the school program including the teaching of Mathematics, Christian Studies and Geography. She could turn her talents to anything: calling at bush dances, running ballgame carnivals, coaching volleyball, assisting with eleven musicals as wardrobe mistress as well as overseeing social activities for boarders.

In 1991, Rosilyn moved to Brisbane to take on the important position of Assistant to the Headmaster at Redeemer Lutheran College in Rochedale. She continued teaching, namely Economics, where she was also the Subject Co-ordinator, and Accounting. In 1999 she took on even more responsibility as Assistant Head - Administration. In 2002 she was appointed to the position of Deputy Head of College, followed by Deputy Principal, and currently Assistant to the Principal.

At all times, Rosilyn has performed her duties with distinction.

One of her many areas of responsibility at Redeemer has been the huge co-curricular program. Besides being in charge of the area generally, she has personally produced fourteen college musicals over 23 years, an astonishing contribution in itself. Added to these accomplishments Rosilyn has actively assisted with the school magazine, ball games, the arts and crafts festival, Redeemer Fair, the Student Representative Council and environmental committee.

Rosilyn has been an acknowledged curriculum leader and highly professional teacher. She acted as a panel chair for Economics both at regional and state levels, and has been a respected member and former secretary of the Queensland Economics Teachers Association.

Her students have regularly won prizes in state and national competitions. This excellence in teaching has been consistent

Staff we throughout her career and was as strongly evident for her final cohort in 2017. Within the Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District, she has served on various committees involved with education, Lutheran Youth of Queensland, affirmative action, tertiary ministries and human resources.

Two characteristics pervade all her endeavours. The first has been her amazing ability to manage a high degree of complex organisation. She has always worked hard, and everything she has done was performed with determined skill and attention to detail. The second is a caring heart. Rosilyn has always been concerned for the welfare of the people with whom she worked and was always in the background making sure they were looked after, especially in difficult, taxing or vulnerable times.

Motivated by her Christian faith, she is both efficient and loving.

Rosilyn has been a fine Christian leader who forged a pathway for many other Lutheran women leaders to follow. Her contribution to both Lutheran schools, for which she served, has been undeniable. This outstanding service is humbly recognised through this Award.

Mrs Karen Flowers - 27 Years Service Karen commenced her employment at Redeemer in the position of parttime Teachers’ Clerk in January 1990. Her position was renamed Administration Assistant – Senior School in 2008 and she will have fulfilled this position until her retirement at the end of 2017.

In her role Karen has been responsible for Senior School enquiries, student attendances and absentees, student health and safety including first-aid, data entry and record keeping, maintaining stationery stocks for Senior School as well as administrative support for the Deputy Principal, Head of Senior School, Pastoral Care Leaders and Teachers.

She has willingly provided support to her colleagues.

Karen’s faithful and conscientious service to her Lord and the Lutheran Church of Australia, through her service in Lutheran schools, has been excellent and is humbly recognised through this Award.

Report from

COLLEGE COUNCIL 2017 has been an exciting year at Redeemer Lutheran College.

The College Community warmly welcomed Mrs Tanya Crooks to the role of College Principal.

Mrs Crooks was installed into the role by the Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District during the College’s Opening Service on 2 February 2017, and she has enthusiastically taken up the role. Over the past twelve months, Mrs Crooks has worked tirelessly to progress the College, encouraging us to be Curious, Courageous and Christ-led.

MR ROSS WARBROOKE Chair

This was the year for the College’s biennial musical production. This year, the College presented “The Music Man”. All of the effort, teamwork and talent by the students and staff culminated in the performances that were presented at the end of April. I have been to a number of the College Musicals over the years and I am delighted to see that each musical reaches a very high standard. This year was no exception. The College Council sincerely thanks all the students and staff for their efforts to make each performance such a memorable experience.

The Strategic Plan 2017 to 2019 was finalised at the beginning of 2017 and released to the College Community in June. This plan details the strategic directions that the College wants to prioritise over the next three years. These directions were developed following input from the students, staff and parents in the Redeemer Community in 2016. I take this opportunity to thank those students, staff and parents for making the time to attend the various workshops. College Council will be monitoring, on an ongoing basis, the progress of the College Management Team with the implementation of each component of the plan.

I want to thank the staff, students and parents for their involvement and their enthusiasm in the development of the Master Plan for the College. This was an exciting time as we investigated how education and its delivery would look in 2030. We were capably assisted in this process by the Fulton Trotter Architect’s team. The Master Plan was released to the College in September. The plan contains a number of innovative concepts and will allow

for the significant changes in educational facilities that are required to accommodate the anticipated future delivery methods. It is interesting to note that by the time that the Master Plan is fully implemented, facilities which were built a number of years ago will be of a similar vintage to the current facilities that are proposed to be replaced. The College is now planning for an introductory stage which will allow for the future smooth replacement of the existing facilities. The Redeemer Foundation is excited about the prospect of being able to assist with the financing of these projects.

During the June/July holidays, the roof for the Chapel was replaced and other maintenance items attended to. With thanks to the College’s Business Office, the works were completed ahead of schedule and with minimal interruption to the workings of the College.

I recently attended the College’s Sports Award evening and it was pleasing to hear that the College has performed very well in the Greater Brisbane Conference (GBC) for the Senior School and JTAS for the Junior School. I particularly want to thank the members of the Parent Support Reference Group for their time and input in 2016 to develop the “Shaping the Future of Redeemer Sport”. This development has clearly shown results this year. While the main objective of the Redeemer Sports program is to develop a healthy involvement of students in sport rather than the winning of pennants, it is great to have wins on the board.

Similarly, the College’s music program has seen many ensembles win awards for their performances. Again, while that is not the main aim of the program, I encourage you to attend a music concert (a number are held each term) to hear the great music that the students are making. My observation is that they are always highly polished presentations.

On behalf of College Council, I want to acknowledge the efforts of the volunteers who work on the P & F Committee. These people put in a lot of time to ensure that the opportunities for the students continue to be enhanced. While it was disappointing that the Redeemer Fair was cancelled due to weather

College Council Profile considerations (the first time in the life of the College), it was clear from the state of the grounds on 21 October 2017 that the P & F had clearly made the right decision. I also thank the P&F for planning and providing the new barbeque facilities at Scurr Oval. These facilities were put into use in March.

It has been exciting to hear about the team from the Junior School who are attending a Robotics competition in Sydney at the end of this year after having won the Queensland finals.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the 27 years of commitment that Miss Rosilyn Frieberg has given to Redeemer Lutheran College.

Rosilyn transferred to the College not long after it opened and has been involved in the transformation from a Secondary School to a P–12 College along with the associated increase in student numbers. Rosilyn commenced as an Economics/ Business Principles teacher and for a long time now, amongst other things, has been managing the day to day running of the College, organising the extensive co-curricular program offered by the College and ensuring that all new starters at the College are suitably welcomed to the College. We wish Rosilyn well for her retirement and pray God’s blessings for the future.

I and College Council extend our thanks to all of College’s auxiliaries and their associated supporters. There efforts help to increase the experience of each student at the College.

I welcome Judy Powell who has been recently appointed to College Council. Judy is a member of Our Saviour Congregation.

I thank all the members of College Council who volunteer their time to function as the College’s governing body and who ensure that the College remains founded on God’s Word, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

It is great to get to the end of the school year and look back on all the things that have happened; the memories that were made, the activities that have taken place and the people that were involved in our lives in this short snapshot of time. How good would it now be to be able to “clock-off” just for a short while, to catch our breath, to savour the moment, to smell the roses, to enjoy the view before we are again swept up in the whirlwind of life that pushes and pulls and tugs us in every different direction?

Most often in the busyness of our lives, it’s the short moments of contemplation, of reflection and of personal renewal that get lost amongst the chaos of lunch boxes, transport schedules and lost homework. Our spiritual life is most often the casualty of life’s busyness and yet it is that same spiritual life which enables us to manage when it appears that the mayhem around us is about to devour us.

At Our Saviour, we celebrate the active life of our community and we do so with great joy, but we also acknowledge and care about those life events which are less public, which include hurt and pain, which involve suffering and loss and which are so often, so totally out of our control. Our church office (Doorways) is a regular haven for people seeking comfort and support, our church people are so regularly engaged in prayer for people who need love and support, and our church worship is so often populated by people looking for a refuge from the troubles of life. And in all of these places, people experience Christ. “Our Hope is in Christ” is a statement beyond the feel-good notion of happy families and snapshot smiles. In Christ,

our hope extends beyond pleasant memories of the past and wishful dreams of the future. In Christ, our hope provides us with a platform to build our lives, to manage our fears and to deal with all that life might dish up to us, good and bad. In Christ, our hope equips us for life-long learning, to make positive contributions within our community and extend our mission of education and care. In Christ, our hope takes us beyond ourselves and into the loving arms of a God that cares for us, who wants us to live a full and abundant life and who is willing to give up His only son in order for that to happen.

In the life of Our Saviour Lutheran Church we celebrate the joy of partnership with Redeemer Lutheran College and continue the mission of the school in offering the message of hope that can be found in no other than Jesus Christ. Just look around and see the love that is shared, the grace that is extended and the peace that is experienced in the lives and activities of our faith community.

Bush Bonanza raises over $6,000!

The annual Bush Bonanza was held at Redeemer on Saturday 12 August! Over $6,238 was raised in support of the East Africa Hunger Crisis.

Reformation Sunday Our Saviour Lutheran Church celebrated the 500th Reformation of the Church with a special combined worship service on Sunday 29 October.

Playgroup Graduation The Our Saviour Playgroup is generally held in the Multi-Purpose Centre every Tuesday morning thoughout the term, however on Tuesday 21 November, a special graduation ceremony was held in Redeemer OSHC to celebrate our 2017 Playgroup graduates!

Christmas at Redeemer is always a special time together with Our Saviour. On Sunday 3 December, the Christmas season came alive for the Kid’s Christmas Celebration Service: “Jesus Christ is Coming to Town”. Redeemer’s Year 1 & 2 Christian Dance students blessed our worship with with the song, “Jingle Jingle Jesus”.

Athletics Australia has released its appointments of Technical Officials for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April 2018. Congratulations to three members from the Redeemer community who have been appointed. Ben Kleinschmidt (2014 College Captain), Peter Kleinschmidt (2017 Vice Captain), and Kerwyn Kleinschmidt (1988-2015 Staff member) will be officiating as track umpires.

Congratulations to Casey Curran (15) and Bradley Roe (13) who recently announced their engagement! Casey graduated from Redeemer in 2015 and since then she has fast tracked her Bachelor to 1 year and 7 months instead of 3 years. A week prior to her graduation, Casey took up a fantastic role as a HR Officer for one of Australia’s largest logistics and cold storage organisations!

Weddings Daniel Hammond (97) married Katherine Lubach (99) on 31 December 2016 at The Glass Chapel, Sanctuary Cove. A New Year’s Eve style reception was held with close friends and family at the Intercontinental Sanctuary Cove Resort at which Paul Psaltis (97) acted as MC. Guests travelled from as far as London and New Zealand to celebrate with the newlyweds. A total of 15 Redeemer Alumni attended.

Wedding party included: Groomsman: Alan Brown (97), Joel Krauel (97), Adam Krauel (01), and Brenton Hammond (01); Bridesmaids: Kylie Bogert (Thomas (99), Alison Frazer, Sarah Brown, and Fallon Hammond.

Former Redeemer student Samuel Wendt (2016) has represented Australia at the 6th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships, Indianapolis, USA. As well as individually competing in the 200M Individual Medley, where he placed 13th, Samuel was part of the 4th placed Mens 4x200M Freestyle Relay, and the Bronze Medal winning Mens 4x100M Freestyle relay.
