Strategic Growth Appreciation and celebration of events such as the construction of JG Block and the College signage update, need also to be placed in the context of being outcomes of Redeemer’s ongoing strategic planning. Redeemer operates on a cycle of five year strategic plans with 2011 marking the end of the previous plan and 2012 seeing the preparation of the next plan (2012-2016). In reviewing the previous strategic plan, it has been most pleasing to see how the planning has provided clear outcomes, sometimes literally in concrete, at other times in the form of services and programs, all aimed at providing the best possible education in a manner that does not diminish the values and mission of Redeemer. In looking to the future, the situation is no different. Redeemer will progress as a result of careful strategic planning. This year, the College Council has been undertaking a comprehensive strategic planning process, first commencing with a review of its mission and values before moving on and addressing the many practical issues that comprise the running of a P-12 college. Considering the changing and turbulent times in which we live, it is indeed fortuitous that Redeemer’s strategic planning cycle is occurring at a time when the recent State and Federal government initiatives can be aptly addressed. Throughout the past, Redeemer has been blessed with many opportunities to celebrate its growth and in this issue of Redeemer Record we find ourselves in the same situation. Recent visitors to the College, or people simply driving past the College on Rochedale Road, would notice further construction on the Junior School campus. This building will be named JG Block. It is anticipated JG Block will be completed in July with the official opening to be held towards the end of Term 3. The JG Block project is more than simply six classrooms in a double storey building, the project in its entirety will include an amenities facility and a large playground extending from JG Block right the way through the Junior School Campus to the Multi-Purpose Centre. At the time of writing, construction progress was excellent and we are keenly awaiting the completion of this important project. After an extended period of very little signage throughout the College, it has been pleasing to see the installation of phase two of our signage update. Phase one involved the construction of the large signs on Rochedale Road. Phase two includes directional signage across all three campuses, including new signs at Scurr and Fred Davey Ovals. Parents and students who attend evening activities at the College will appreciate that the college map signs at the entrance to each sub-school are illuminated. Phase three will involve the affixing of new building identification signs across the College over the next 12 months.

During Term 1, the College Council announced that Redeemer’s sub-school structure will change as from the beginning of the 2015 school year. With this change in place, the Junior School will be made up of Years Prep to 6, the Middle School Years 7 to 9, and the Senior School Years 10 to 12. This restructure is in response to a number of issues including the State Government’s decision to move Year 7 from primary school into high school; the State Government’s decision to implement the Australian Curriculum (incorporating Year 7 curriculum as a high school year); as well as pastoral care issues including student leadership development. Please read the accompanying article explaining these changes in more detail. Flowing out of the State Government’s decision to move Year 7 into high school, Redeemer is also planning for two additional Year 7 classes in 2015 to meet the demand of high school enrolments. Redeemer’s College Council and Executive are currently planning for all of these initiatives with a focus on ensuring that each sub-school retains its own identity and continues to provide excellent, age specific pastoral care to all students based firmly on Christian teachings and values. from the CHAPLAIN

The Lessons of Sport I have an ambivalent attitude to competitive sport. On the one hand I’ve seen some inspirational moments in sport. I’ve enjoyed the thrill of seeing my team win a premiership. I’ve witnessed heroic moments which have brought out the best in people. On the other hand, I’ve also seen sport bring out the worst in people. I’ve witnessed appalling and immature behaviour in disgruntled fans, and it does not impress me one bit when I see professional sports people get involved in melees, or in reprehensible or violent behaviour off the field. Perhaps the sports people are not entirely to blame. After all, it is our culture which places these top sports people on pedestals, and which idolises and indulges them in ways their psychology can’t really handle. But my experience of sport is not in the professional arena, but on a local level. In the first part of this year I assisted the Year 7 cricket team, and had my first go at umpiring. This literally put me in the middle of the game, so I got to know the players pretty well. I tried always to be fair, and giving a Redeemer player out LBW was not something I enjoyed doing. But there was no point in being out there if I was not prepared to play fair, and this was something I always admired about the way Adam Gilchrist played cricket.

Sport can deliver enormous and exhilarating highs. It is a really good feeling to enjoy the reward of victory after putting in the hard work. But sport can also lead to times of discouragement and disillusionment. It’s hard when you put in the work and don’t get the reward, or when you feel like you’re always the fodder for someone else’s glory. Sport can make people, but it can also break them. So what lessons would I encourage a student at Redeemer to learn from the sporting field? Firstly, it’s only a game, so keep it in perspective. Of course there is no point in being out there if you don’t give it your best, but if your best does not get you over the line, all is not lost. One essential lesson to learn in life is how to deal with loss. It is impossible for us to always be in the “winner’s circle” in every situation in life. Sooner or later, in one form or another, loss will come knocking on our door, and that is something we need to be able to work through and live beyond. For the early Christians, and for many Christians in many parts of our world today, to become a Christian is to join the “loser’s circle”. But Christians do not think of it as loss: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed in us.” (Rom.8:18). Times of victory. Times of loss. Times of victory in spite of loss. If sport can teach all of these things, then it has been worthwhile after all. Pastor Paul Thiele Senior Chaplain

A new look Sub-school Structure Over the past year, Redeemer has been reviewing its future subschool structures in order to address issues affecting education over the next five to seven years. These issues include: 1. the introduction of the Australian Curriculum; 2. the Queensland State Government’s decision to move Year 7 into high school in 2015; 3. pastoral care issues such as student leadership development, rites of passage and the engagement of Year 9 students. Redeemer is responding to these issues to ensure that development occurs smoothly over the coming years, and to ensure that we meet the pastoral care needs of students and families. These matters have now been thoroughly researched and considered resulting in the following outcomes: • Redeemer will continue to have sub-schools. • Redeemer’s sub-schools will be restructured from 2015 to include the following year levels: • Junior School Prep to Year 6 • Middle School Years 7 to 9 • Senior School Years 10 to 12 • Sub-schools are to be empowered to drive and manage the curriculum within the P-12 context of Redeemer. • Pastoral Care will be reviewed in line with any changes made to the sub-school structure. • Age appropriate leadership opportunities and development will be made available to all students. • Rites of passage are to be reviewed across the College and in each sub-school.

Implementation of some of these directions, such as student leadership initiatives and curriculum management, has commenced and will be developed further over the coming years. The major change for Redeemer will be the restructuring of the sub-schools in 2015. This change will be thoroughly planned throughout the remainder of 2012, and will continue through 2013 and 2014. At the forefront of this change is our commitment to serve our students and families with educational excellence and our dedication to pastoral care. It is important to note that these changes support Redeemer’s mission and values and will strengthen Redeemer’s ability to carry out this mission into the future.

Junior School Development: JG Block The next stage of the Junior School, currently under construction, is known as ‘JG Block’. JG Block will be a two storey classroom building with three classrooms on each level. Each classroom will have a wet area / break-out work area adjacent to the main classroom space, and each room will also be expandable with some rooms having the capacity to expand into the upper verandah space. This flexibility of usage will provide teachers with a relatively wide range of pedagogical choices in the delivery of their lessons. In keeping with present practice the classrooms will be IT rich with interactive white boards and wireless connectivity, and in keeping with Redeemer College Council policy, as a new building all rooms will be air-conditioned thus retaining the existing fact that all classrooms from Prep to Year 8 are airconditioned. Attached to the Eastern end (Rochedale Road side) of JG Block will be a new purpose built Junior School toilet block. Between JG Block and the MPC a new Junior School Playground will also be constructed. The playground will be developed in two stages.

Stage one (approximately two thirds of the total playground space) will be constructed within the same time frame as JG Block, with the goal of making this available to students when occupancy of JG Block is available in the second half of 2012. The remaining playground space to be developed is the existing playground immediately adjacent to the MPC. This will be redeveloped this calendar year. The completion of JG Block and the new playground will see all of the modular buildings behind the new Junior School Office removed.

Invitation Parents and friends of Redeemer Lutheran College are invited to attend the Official Opening and Dedication of JG Block, to be held on Thursday 20 September commencing at 11.15am. Please RSVP to mail@redeemer.com.au or phone 3340 8888 by Monday 17 September 2012.

Book Fair – Best Yet! The Book Fair held in the Middle School Resource Centre on 23-27 April was an exciting time for students to ‘shop’. A total of $9,607 was taken in four days with the college receiving 35% of this amount in books. A HUGE and grateful thank you from our students and teachers goes to our parents and grandparents who generously donated 48 books. All donated books proudly display the donor’s name.

2011 OP Achievements Redeemer is celebrating the success of the 2011 cohort. Analysis of our results demonstrate a high correlation between QCS testing results and the OPs they achieved. The QCS testing provides an insight into a student’s ability, while the results they achieve over their final year of summative assessment reflects their ability, application and consistency in their studies. In 2011 our graduating students achieved the following results:

ANZAC Dawn Service The initiative of the Christian Life Committee to hold an ANZAC service in honour of, and out of respect for, Australia’s Service men and women, both serving and for those passed on, is something our college community should be proud of. The Dawn service was held on Tuesday 24 April at the ANZAC Memorial and flag pole on the Chapel Green and was attended by approximately 100 students, parents, friends and staff of the College. A community breakfast followed the service at the Chapel Welcome Hub, with all proceeds going to the 2012 ANZAC Fund.

• Kelsey Britton and Jessica Collins were awarded an OP 1 • Over the past 5 years, an average of 5.32% OP eligible students have received an OP 1 • 12.0% of OP eligible students achieved an OP 1-3 (Comparison: 9.84% state average) • 29.7% of our OP eligible students achieved an OP 1-5 (Comparison: 19% state average) • 87.1% of our OP eligible students achieved an OP 1-15 (Comparison: 75.7% state average) • 56.4% of all students exited the college with one or more VET qualifications • 97% of our students who applied to QTAC for commencement of tertiary studies in 2012 were offered and confirmed a place in university courses or diploma courses at TAFE. This is a direct result of these outstanding results and the support provided by our careers advisors to assist students in exploring pathways consistent with their abilities and interests.

2012 College Leaders As the College Captains of 2012, we hope to show Christian leadership not only through our words, but through our actions as role models to all in our school community. We believe that a student leader is someone who can take initiative in a variety of situations, someone who has the courage to do what is right and someone who cares about the school. We intend to not only honour this, but uphold the school’s motto, ‘Our Hope is in Christ’. As leaders we want to inspire, motivate and bring the best out of all our peers. In our roles we hope to guide the student cohort towards an encouraging environment which applauds teamwork, school pride and comradery. Proverbs 31:8-9 says: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” It is our hope that we can speak up for those who need it and embrace our peers’ individuality, strengths and weaknesses. This year we hope to form relationships with the younger grades at lunch times. By doing this we can encourage Christian values to each sub-school. We aim to bring unity among each cohort by encouraging friendliness and a positive attitude towards each other. All of the student leaders for 2012, the Music, Sport and House Captains, have the same goal to enhance the environment of Redeemer’s community and are all actively participating to achieve this goal. It is our aim that through these actions, we can promote the message of God and provide a

Junior School News The Junior School has been a busy place to date this year! In March we finally moved into the new Junior School Office. This is a purpose built and designed space to accommodate a larger reception area, new offices, as well as a sick bay and staff room facilities. The bright colours are inviting to the young students and the area has a professional feel to it. Also in March we acknowledged our inaugural Junior School House Captains. Students from Year 5 were given the opportunity to nominate themselves for these positions and a boy and girl from each House Team were selected. Congratulations to our Inaugural House Captains: • • • •

Lavarack: William Eivers and Ella Wenke Mansfield: Soumil Sharma and Kailee Muller Ramsay: Harrison Lavin and Taylor Pashen Wilson: Bailey Aslander and Mineka Vedamuttu

These students were awarded with a house badge during one of our Assemblies. Camps were a highlight in Term 1. Our Year 4 and Year 5 students had their year level camps at Bestbrook Mountain Resort and Camp Currimundi, respectively. Camps are organised for students in the Junior School in a variety of locations, focusing on different skills to ultimately help provide the students with the necessary competencies to enjoy the Tuchekoi experience when they reach Year 9.

The Prep Bible Presentation is an annual event that is an initiative of Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Members of Our Saviour congregation attend a special Chapel service where they give every Prep child their very own Bible. Prep parents are also welcome to attend this event and a morning tea is provided after the service. Once the students have received their Bibles, some members of the congregation then graciously give their time to come in weekly to spend time reading Bible stories to our Prep students. Building student relationships across the College is a key goal at Redeemer. Teachers look for appropriate ways that they can bring the Senior or Middle School into the Junior School or vice versa. Each year the Year 12 Manufacturing Students look for ways they can build or make something that will be of benefit to the Junior School students. This year the Year 12 Manufacturing class worked to design and create a storage system for outdoor play equipment. The class was given the task of building four mobile storage products that could be easily manipulated by the students. Once the boxes were complete, the students visited the Junior School to show our students how to use them appropriately. The Senior School students who study Early Childhood also spend time in our Junior School classrooms assisting where necessary. One of the big roles they played to date was assisting with the Mothers Day Stall by preparing, wrapping and pricing items. This is an annual event that the Junior School children eagerly look forward to. Students walk to the Senior School to enter the Mothers Day Stall and select a suitable item for their special Mum. The Early Childhood students assist again on the day by helping Junior School students with selecting and paying for their items.

Middle School News “Chemical composition of explosives is a relatively predictable thing … Kids aren’t. You can keep your job and I will keep mine.” These words of wisdom were part of a letter written to me recently by a past student who is currently serving as a combat engineer with the Australian forces in Afghanistan. His job is high risk research – locating and dealing with land mines and improvised explosive devices. His words made me stop and think about the unpredictability of kids, and the truth, for me, is this. It is the very unpredictability of kids that makes teaching such a challenging and interesting career. Middle Schoolers are wonderfully and terrifyingly unpredictable, as their parents would attest. In the space of a day, or even of an hour, they can say and do things that make their teachers feel proud, enthused, frustrated, cross and proud again. Overwhelmingly, there are positives for which we are grateful. We see students making academic progress, developing their social skills, growing in their Christian faith, making excellent contributions to music ensembles and sporting or debating teams, providing service to their school community. In 2012 Middle School has had a focus on Leadership. All Year 7 students have participated in a full-day Leadership incursion facilitated by Lutheran Youth of Queensland. Through games, team challenges, discussion and drawing, our students were motivated to think about what leadership is, who we admire as leaders and what qualities we value in our role models. Some students were surprised to learn that they could be leaders and they were awakened to the concept that there is no singular model of leadership. As well as recognising their own leadership capacities, they began to look for and appreciate the leadership attributes of their peer group members.

Throughout this year Middle School students have been invited and encouraged to join the Leadership Group, a lunchtime activity that teaches young people about leadership, helps them to recognise their personal leadership potential and provides opportunities for them to show leadership in the College context. They are learning that it is not a matter of having a title and wearing a badge, but of putting into practice real servant leadership. The Golden Tin Trophy has been fiercely contested by the three Year 6 classes. An inter-class challenge, the students selected teams to compete in three challenges held during separate lunch hours: • Relay Schmelay – carrying a relay baton while jumping in a sack, carrying an egg and spoon, dribbling a soccer ball, balancing a platter of plastic cups and sprinting for the finish line. • Operation Skilful Endurance – mega-team skipping and handball challenges. • Undercover Art – design and execution of a coloured chalk pavement drawing representing the theme “The Culture of the Middle School”. The Year 6s had lots of fun competing in these events, supporting their teams and making their best efforts towards success. This series of events also provided an excellent opportunity for the Senior School Cultural Committee students to interact positively with the younger students, as this event was organised by them. Year 8s are eagerly anticipating the August visit of Simon Higgins, the author of critically acclaimed historical novels set in Asia. Ahead of his visit, borrowings of his novels Moonshadow and Tomodachi from the Middle School library have already increased. All things considered, the daily life of Middle School is busy, rich … and blessedly unpredictable. Mrs Judy Powell Head of Middle School

Senior School News Our College Captains and Deputy Captains began the year with the ‘Enthuse’ Leadership Camp. Enthuse is a Christ centred leadership program for student leaders in Lutheran schools. This camp was followed by a recent Recharge day at LEQ (Lutheran Education Queensland), which further inspired our student leaders in their Christian service at the college. The College Captains of 2012 have approached their responsibilities in an exemplary manner and have been outstanding in their service and commitment. College Captains: Tom MacElroy and Sydney Cock Deputy Captains: Peter Conomo and Kristy Anna Hampel The Year 11 students embarked on a leadership camp in February. This camp was an outstanding success. The camp challenged and inspired the students, but more importantly, it was instrumental in focussing students on servant leadership. The Year 11 students have offered their service in many areas of the college this year. The House barbecues provided an opportunity for students and families to spend valuable community time with their House and Home group family. This was also an opportunity for House Captains to show leadership and to generate House spirit for 2012. Students have enthusiastically participated in interhouse events and the competition has been strong. Wilson House won the swimming carnival breaking Lavarack’s winning streak. Achieving first place in the Cross Country, Wilson have proven to be a formidable team.

Leadership opportunities for students in Years 10-12 have included assisting in interhouse competitions in the Junior School and Middle School. Students have enjoyed this opportunity and have been excellent role models for younger students. Lavarack: Mansfield: Ramsay: Wilson:

The Community Service Committee has been very active in their support of our local community and charities. The annual Shave For A Cure held earlier this term raised over $5,000 and was supported by many Year 12 students and some teachers. Participation in this fundraising event has become a rite of passage for Year 12 boys. In Term 1, students donated Easter eggs which were packaged and delivered to the elderly in local nursing homes. A significant amount was also raised for the Hear and Say Centre for Deaf Children. Students departed for the Japan tour at the end of Term 1. The tour was a great success, giving students the opportunity to experience another culture, build strong friendships with their peers and meet new friends. In Semester 2, Year 9 students will embark on their outdoor education experience to Camp Tuchekoi. This experience will undoubtedly be filled with many challenging and memorable experiences.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Year 11 Leadership Camp ‘One for the Books’ The Year 11 cohort of 2012 embarked on a new, exciting journey that proved to be one of laughs, fun, learning and friendship. Mrs Eva Littleton, Mrs Marie Hughes, Mrs Janelle Hughes, Mr Adrian Ford, Pastor Paul Thiele, Ms Mel Chard, Mrs Jane Gado and Mr Brad Lawrence joined us on the journey to see what the Senior Class of 2013 had in store for Redeemer Lutheran College when it came to leadership. Luther Heights (Coolum), the destination of the Year 11 Leadership Camp, was familiar to most students, however we were all still buzzing as we hopped off the bus. After a lovely welcome from the Luther Heights staff, we had our first session with Emma Graetz (Lutheran Youth of Queensland Leadership Trainer), who guided us through the camp with her amazing knowledge and understanding of leadership. Our groups were made up of students who we didn’t necessarily know very well which gave us a chance to mix with new people and broaden friendships. We played a number of team building games which not only helped us to get to know each other, but also provided an opportunity for students to step up and lead through encouragement, communication and decision making. Students had to face fears of heights and the encouragement shown by peers was moving. Every single student put in 100% effort and proved to themselves and everyone else, that they can do amazing things. The Video Alphabet Scavenger Hunt was a camp highlight that saw us heading on an off-campus adventure. This activity required us to make a film about leadership, and also incorporate an A to Z list of random activities which ranged from singing YMCA to filming a takeaway menu. We had to ensure that each group member was involved in the film and that everything went according to plan. Organisation, communication and the ability to listen were some of the leadership qualities that needed to be utilised in this activity.

Our final day was a lot of fun. After watching everyone’s Alphabet Scavenger Hunt videos, it was our turn to make each other smile. The touching words from student to student really reflected the great group of Year 11 students we are and also the impact that the camp had on our grade. The adults didn’t go unmentioned as two students took the initiative to stand up and say something lovely about each teacher and instructor in the room. The teachers also took their turns to speak to us as a group and their kind words really meant a lot. We left Luther Heights wishing we could have stayed longer but knowing that in just three days, we grew as individuals, we grew as a group and we grew as leaders. Kate Lawson Year 11

Sport in 2012

TAS and JTAS Sport – Semester 1, 2012 The sports year has been a busy but exciting time so far in 2012. We hit the ground running playing our first round of TAS (The Associated Schools) sport after only three days of school and the level of support shown by the students to get all the teams on the field in such a short time was fantastic. This demonstration of commitment and school spirit has continued all semester resulting in some amazing successes for many teams and individuals alike. Trimester 1 sport saw a renewed interest in the Boys Cricket and Girls Tennis programs. The Boys Cricket entered all teams from Year 5 to Year 12 into the TAS competition

This welcomed new attitude saw all of our teams dramatically improve and challenge for titles in all year levels. Our Open A and Open B teams both qualified for finals with the Open As final finishing in a tie and the Open B girls becoming Champions of 2012. Girls Basketball and Boys Volleyball have always been popular sports at Redeemer and this year was no exception. The teams were over flowing with willing participants who trained hard and looked to improve every week. The Boys Volleyball teams all battled hard into the last round of games with all teams narrowly missing out on finals berths. The Girls Basketball was again very competitive in all year

At Redeemer we judge our success through supporting our friends and team mates, respecting our opponents and competing with integrity at all times. for the first time in many years. This level of enthusiasm shown by the boys across the entire school led to our First XI, Year 10 and Year 9 teams all playing on Finals weekend, with the Year 9 Cricketers officially being crowned TAS Red Division Champions. The Girls Tennis was a great success in Trimester 1 with many girls playing the game for the first time. Our new coach’s enthusiasm for the game was infectious creating a positive experience for all of the girls, encouraging them to improve their skills and enjoy their Tennis.

levels with the Open A and Open B teams making it into the finals. The Open As went down in a hard fought final but the Open B Girls were crowned TAS Red Champions after an undefeated season. The JTAS (Junior TAS) season was also a great success in Term 1 with our Year 6 Cricket team showing great commitment and spirit maintaining an undefeated record all season. The Softball girls were outstanding with their attendance and commitment to improve their individual skills. This resulted in many victories during

the course of the season and led to three girls being selected for representative honours. Our Redeemer ‘Racers’ swimming team had a great year starting off well with a record number of swimmers qualifying for the district team. We then participated strongly at the Lutheran Schools carnival before entering the TAS swimming arena, where we dominated the Red Division. The JTAS swimming squad also had an excellent season showing great determination and commitment to training. It is this attitude and desire that will help develop Redeemer swimming and keep us competing at the highest level when these students enter the middle and senior schools. After the completion of the Swimming season comes Cross Country season, where again participation is the key to success. The commitment and efforts of many were clear to see despite the cold, early morning starts for training. We placed sixth overall out of 14 schools in the South District. The TAS Red Carnival was next and again our goal was to finish first to gain promotion back into the Blue Division. Some close races and great competition saw us fall just short of our goal with an overall third placing. The Junior Cross Country team performed well at all carnivals and again demonstrated a high level of commitment to improve as individuals and as a team. As a group the Junior Cross Country team won the Southern Lutheran Associated Primary Schools Red Division Carnival. JTAS for Term 2 has had some mixed results on the field but once again the commitment and positive attitude must be commended. The Year 7.1 and 7.2 Netball teams are currently undefeated for the

season and are looking to finish the season on a positive note with more victories. Our Rugby teams have demonstrated some amazing skill and team developments throughout the season leading to the Year 6/7 team having their first win of the season. Trimester 2 has been an outstanding success. As a school we have worked hard and successfully qualified six Netball, three Hockey, four Tennis and one Rugby team to play in the finals. On the finals day all teams performed well with the Open A, Year 9 and Year 8 Girls Hockey dominating and winning the championship. The Boys Tennis also did an amazing job securing the Open A and B titles, whilst the Open B Netball girls demolished their opponents on the way to collecting the trophy. Many individuals have gained selection to representative honours this year at District and Regional level. Congratulations to all students selected to represent Queensland in 2012! We sometimes judge our successes through medals and trophies won but I believe our success in sport has come in a different form this year. The display of pride in our school teams and commitment to participation across the school this year has been outstanding. At Redeemer we judge our success through supporting our friends and team mates, respecting our opponents and competing with integrity at all times. Through this we have proven to be champions so far in 2012! Mr Brent Arnold Head of Sport

A New Look TAS Sports Uniform Throughout 2011-2012, a committee made up of Sports staff, Executive members and P & F representatives have been working toward the introduction of new TAS Sports and PE uniforms which are being progressively rolled out across 2012. (A new PE uniform will not be ready until 2013.) The introduction of the new TAS Sports uniform will see a gradual separation between the PE uniform and the TAS Sports uniform. • The new TAS Sports uniform incorporates the use of the college colours, college crest and logo, ensuring that it remains true to our history. • The TAS Sports uniform is designed in such a manner so as to be able to be worn for a number of sports across the year (not a separate uniform for each sport) and yet is still ‘smart and distinctive’. • The Firsts uniforms are distinctively different from the ‘generic’ uniforms as well as complying with TAS numbering requirements. • The new uniforms provide both a male and female cut for relevant garments and the supplier is also able to provide one-off specials for unique student needs. • A new coaches and staff uniform is also being introduced as part of the new look.

New Signs for Ovals – What’s in a Name? Visitors to the college will now be able to find their way around each of the sub-school campuses, thanks to updated maps and directional signs which have recently been installed. The new signs are designed for visitors to the college to be able to easily navigate their way around to the main buildings on campus. As part of the upgrade to our maps and directional signs, replacement signs have also been installed onto our two ovals on the main Rochedale Road campus. Since the installation of these new signs, it has raised questions by some students as to who these people are that our sports ovals have been named after:

Fred Davey Oval One of the many who made Redeemer Sport what it is, was Fred Davey. Fred came to Redeemer in 1982, and from that time he exerted a powerful influence on both the students and the sporting Physical Education programs. A talented sportsman, he was equally concerned for the physically talented, those who struggled, and those who were mediocre performers. Fred was the first male teacher in a succession of outstanding male and female PE teachers at Redeemer, and firmly established both Physical Education and Health and Physical Education as dynamic and popular elements in the curriculum. He was diagnosed with cancer in 1993 and passed away early in 1994. The naming of the Middle School Fred Davey Oval is a fitting tribute to his contribution to Redeemer Lutheran College.

The A T Scurr Oval Scurr Oval was named after Arthur T Scurr, a very significant local identity and General Manager of Scurr Brothers (Mitre 10) at Mount Gravatt. He proved to be a loyal and generous supporter and advocate of Redeemer for many years, even though his three daughters were too old to be prospective students of the college. His support was an expression of his commitment to his local community and to the value of Christian education. Arthur Scurr’s contribution to the college was so outstanding and wide ranging that already in early 1980 the Planning Committee was seeking a special way to recognise his work. The outcome was to honour him by giving his name to the main sports oval at the college, The A T Scurr Oval, which first came into use in March of 1981.

D G Stolz Sportsfields The college’s sporting fields situated on 40 acres (16 hectares) on Priestdale Road at Burbank was purchased in February 1985 for $140,000 and came into use in July 1988. The complex was named D G Stolz Sportsfields to honour the contribution of Dr David Stolz to the foundation of the college. It was also fitting because he had been a fine athlete in his youth. COLLEGE NEWS

Japan Tour 2012 It was an early, yet exciting start to our first day of holidays arriving at the Gold Coast airport at 6.00am ready to fly to Cairns. Then after having our last taste of Australian food in Cairns, we boarded our long flight to Tokyo. When we finally landed in Tokyo that same day, we were all a little nervous as our Japan homestay families were there waiting to take us home. However, being put straight into a Japanese home was amazing, and a great experience we wished went for a much longer time. Japanese houses are very small and close together; they don’t have backyards and most houses don’t have space to park cars. They walk and catch the train to travel places. We spoke as much Japanese as we could to our families and learnt a lot of new things: They have heated toilet seats, they bow a lot, they eat a lot and they are very polite and kind people. It was hard to say goodbye, but good to see everyone and speak some English again. We firstly headed to Kyoto by bullet train which they call the Shinkansen. Kyoto had beautiful Cherry blossom displays, castles and was also very cold! After Kyoto, we travelled to Hiroshima. We saw the remains of the Atomic Bomb and the Peace Memorial Museum, learning a lot more about that tragic day for Japan. In Hiroshima we also visited Miyajima Island where we took pictures in front of the famous Red Gate, saw deer everywhere and shopped and ate some great food in the street markets.

Cherry blossoms and lots of great markets for shopping. We went to Tokyo Disneyland which was awesome, and had a subway challenge. The subway challenge was our four groups being given a subway route map, four places to visit and take a photo of and then be back on time. It was hilarious running through the stations like maniacs trying to beat each other to the finish line, and we all finished before our deadline. Our last day in Tokyo was just as busy as the first, but sad that we were leaving such a great place that we had grown so used to. Our homestay students met us at the airport and said goodbye as we flew to Cairns and back to the Gold Coast. I’ll never forget my time in Japan and definitely know I have made some special friends and hope to go back soon!

After Hiroshima we caught busses, trains, the Shinkansen and walked extremely far to a small place called Iga, the birthplace of “ninja”. Surprisingly Iga had one of the nicest hotels with beds. They also did have a great sushi train which had every kind of fish on sushi you could imagine. Tokyo had more beautiful

Easter Egg Gifts

Shave for a Cure

On Wednesday 28 March, a group of five Year 11 students from the Community Service Committee embarked on a journey to Bethany Christian Aged Care. Our primary purpose of the day was to hand out small Easter egg packages to the elderly as an Easter gift. We spoke to numerous residents that welcomed us with open arms and did not hesitate to share their inspirational stories and advice with us. One of the eldest residents, aged 100, spoke to us of her gratitude for friends, family and other people in the community that helped throughout her life. She made us realise how important appreciation is and how lucky we really are to be living in such a wonderful community. The visit reinforced that even a small amount of effort can go a long way and even a smile can brighten someone’s day.

In what has become almost a ‘rite of passage’, over 30 senior boys participated by either shaving their heads and/or waxing their legs in support of the Leukaemia Foundation. Over $5,000 was raised by these young men which is an incredible effort! Such events involve the contributions of many people. Thanks must also go to the School Spirit Committee and Mrs Dart who ran a drinks stall during the event, the maintenance staff for assisting with set up, Mrs Buck in the Business Office, and Ms Berlin, Mr Sharwood Biedermann, Mr Georgiou and Mr Arnold who either coloured, shaved or waxed! Staff and students from the Queensland College of Beauty Therapy and Matters In Grey gave up their time to rip, shave and trim. In honour of our past teacher, Mrs Karen Rowlands, the Community Service Committee would like to donate the proceedings from this great event to the Leukaemia Foundation. Donations can still be made online at http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/ redeemerlutherancollege?langPref=en-CA

Music @ Redeemer – The Year So Far Students have definitely been hitting the high notes this year with several significant performances highlighting how dedicated and talented our young musicians are. Senior School ensembles have all had productive workshops with renowned tutors and conductors and this certainly contributed to Senior Concert Band and Stage Band delivering knock-out performances at the opening of The Rochedale Estates. Students in Stage Band also got a major buzz out of playing for ABC 612’s breakfast program. Of course, our Concert Series continues to be well-attended and the quality of the music-making from all Middle School and Senior School ensembles is to be celebrated. Our annual ‘Road Trip’ with Junior Choir, College Choristers, Voiceworx, Flute Choir and Clarinet Ensemble was a big hit with the residents at The Plains Retirement Village, who were genuinely moved by the students’ beautiful playing and singing. All students are to be congratulated for the special contribution they made on this day. Excitingly, all Year 5 students have taken up the opportunity to learn a band instrument and as a result, Junior Concert Band is the biggest and most vibrant we have ever seen at Redeemer. Junior String Ensemble is also breaking attendance records this

year with terrific numbers of students from Years 3 to 5 attending rehearsals. The support and encouragement parents provide to these students as they begin their life-long musical journey as instrumentalists is invaluable – thank you. Imagine what Redeemer Music is going to look and sound like in 2019! Our Concert Series continued on Sunday 10 June at Brisbane’s Old Museum Building where the Senior Singers, College Chorale and Chamber Strings performed with the Queensland Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble. This has certainly become one of Redeemer Music’s annual highlights! Finally, Redeemer Music is proud to announce that a tour is planned to Victoria and Melbourne for 2013! Students in Senior Singers, Chorale, The Fellas, Chamber Strings, Senior Concert Band and Stage Band will be invited to take part in a series of fantastic concerts and of course, some great Australian sight-seeing. We can’t wait to take our amazing musicians on this musically-rewarding journey. Thank you to the College community for your ongoing support of our fine music program. Judy Powell announces retirement following 23 years of distinguished service Late in Term 1 this year, Mrs Judy Powell (formerly Wintour), (Head of Middle School) announced her retirement which will follow 23 years of distinguished service to Redeemer, and more than 10 years as an Executive member. In addition to the establishment of the Middle School, Judy’s distinguished contributions to Redeemer have been most evident in the fields of English teaching, public speaking and general leadership of staff. Judy’s retirement is effective as of 31 December this year. Judy leaves a great educational legacy to Redeemer, as well as her contributions to the relationship between Redeemer Lutheran College and Our Saviour Lutheran Church. There is no doubt that Judy Powell will be greatly missed, and we pray that this period of transition will be a smooth one for her. Judy’s service to the Redeemer community will be celebrated and acknowledged in our end of year formalities. With the retirement of Mrs Judy Powell at the close of 2012, it has been necessary to appoint a new Head of Middle School. At this stage, this appointment is for 2013 only as it is seen as an interim year before we start to gear up for the changes to all three subschools to take effect in 2015. During 2013, the Middle School will continue unchanged in order to support stability for this interim year. It is my pleasure to announce Mrs Kathy Stock as the Head of Middle School for 2013. Mrs Stock will move from her current roles of Year 8 Home Class Teacher and Assistant Head of Middle School into the position of Head of Middle School for 2013. We congratulate Mrs Stock on this appointment for 2013.

Any past students who would like to share memories or Mrs Powell (Wintour) at Redeemer, and wish her well for her retirement may send an email to: record@redeemer.com.au for inclusion in the December issue of Redeemer Record.

Farewell and Thank You Mrs Helen Charles Mrs Charles has served Redeemer for a little more than thirteen years as the College’s first Student Counsellor. In this role, and during her years of service, she developed Redeemer’s Counselling Department and helped many families of the College in the process, for which the college community is thankful. We wish Mrs Charles all the very best in her retirement!

Ms Katie Truss Congratulations to Ms Katie Truss, Curriculum Leader – English (Years 6-9) who has been awarded a Fullbright Queensland Scholarship, sponsored by the Queensland Government and universities. Through her Fulbright, Ms Truss will spend a year in the United States, undertaking a Master of Education in human development and psychology, focusing on developmental psychology, risk and resilience. She will use this to improve her ability to meet the needs of her students and to allow her to develop programs to enhance skills of Queensland teachers. The prestigious Fulbright program is the largest educational scholarship of its kind, created by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright and the U.S. Government in 1946. Aimed at promoting mutual understanding through educational exchange, it operates between the U.S. and 155 countries. In Australia, the scholarships are funded by the Australian and U.S. Governments and corporate partners and administered by the Australian-American Fulbright Commission in Canberra.

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE NEWS

Outside School Hours Care News This year, Redeemer Lutheran College’s Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) service has continued to grow and provide an invaluable service to our college families, with the After School Care program close to capacity on some afternoons. We continually seek ways to build the professional knowledge and develop learning communities. In the school age care setting all the interactions, experiences, activities, routines and events, planned and unplanned, that occur are designed to foster children’s wellbeing, development and learning. The My Time Our Place Framework has been implemented and is designed to inspire conversations, improve communication and provide a common language about children’s play, leisure and learning among children themselves, their families, the broader community, school age care educators and other professionals. The OSHC service provides a well-resourced program with activities and educational learning experiences for all children enrolled. Mrs Anita Noiesen Outside School Hours Care Coordinator

On Friday 15 June, the Middle School students danced up a storm and had a fabulous night! The Prep to Year 2 students arrived on Saturday 16 June at 4.00pm to be amazed by the lazer lights and disco moves! They had a great time but it was all over too soon as the Years 3-5 students arrived at 6.00pm and danced and jived until the end of the night at 7.30pm. All the students, teachers and parents had a great night and the children on Monday morning wanted to know when the next one was, perhaps next year.

Redeemer Veterans

Incorporating past parents, past and present grandparents, past College Council members and past employees

There is a new look for our Redeemer Veterans! Our members have found that we are all very busy people and don’t want to have committee meetings, so at the recent Annual General Meeting, it was voted… “to suspend the ‘Association’ and continue in a less formal format”. I’m happy to announce that there will not be a committee or any meetings or reports, but simply All Social!

Recent Functions In November 2011, our end of year function was well attended by 38 members and friends. It was held at the Rasa Malaysia Chinese Restaurant at Underwood. A most enjoyable luncheon to conclude the year. We were pleased to welcome two new couples, who are recent past parents.

Past parents, Carol Fisher, Robyn Bailey and Margaret Fletcher will be organizing a Christmas break up and the reunion gathering for 2013. With formalities aside, we hope to see many more of you joining us for fun and fellowship.

The 11th Annual Reunion was held in March and was an extremely successful cocktail evening held in the College Home Economics building. This was a wonderful two course finger food dinner catered for us by the college’s own Year 12 Hospitality Students under the capable guidance of teachers Mrs Jenny Ludwig and Mrs Kate Wilkinson. The food was superb, as was the wine, generously donated by Tyson Stelzer. Pastor Robin Stelzer (a past parent) was our MC for the evening and Principal David Radke welcomed us and thanked us for hard work at the college over past years. It was wonderful to see 56 guests enjoy the friendship and fellowship made through their involvement at the college.

Important Thanks

The new informal format allows us to be more flexible and so current parents and friends are also welcome.

The Redeemer Veterans group will continue to meet for coffee at 3.30pm (new time) on the second Sunday of the month at The Coffee Club on the corner of Cinderella Drive and Springwood Road, Springwood.

We have to thank the many people who have played a big part over these last years to keep the Association going. In particular, our retiring President, Noela Kleinschmidt and Secretary Pat Skytte. These two ladies have held positions on the committee and worked hard together in organising numerous successful functions.

If you know anyone that would like to come along, we would be pleased to hear from you, so that we can be sure to keep everyone informed. Carol Fisher (07) 3341 6713 (07) 3208 6650 Robyn Bailey Margaret Fletcher (07) 3423 1554
