Why Celebrate?

A Hopeful Goodbye Term 4 of the school year ends around the time that the Christian calendar begins, with the Season of Advent.

This adds to the celebrations of the end of the school year as the whole nation begins to embrace the season of ‘Good Will and Great Joy’.

The Christmas story as a whole is just like any year in the life of a school as it is filled with times of challenge as well as times of celebration, thanksgiving, and happiness.

When one reflects carefully on all the details in the story of Christmas, there are many challenging sections for Mary and Joseph to negotiate. In the very earliest stages of the Christmas story, Mary and Joseph both faced the very real social and family pressures of the Immaculate Conception prior to wedlock. Mary’s donkey ride to Bethlehem so late in her pregnancy would have been far from enjoyable and probably not without significant worry. Of course there was the considerable stress that both Joseph and Mary faced in finding suitable accommodation when they arrived in Bethlehem, not just for their personal comfort, but most importantly the accommodation needed to provide for an imminent birth. After the birth, Mary and Joseph faced the danger of Herod’s wrath, ultimately forcing them to become refugees in Egypt.

Despite these very significant trials, the central part of the Christmas story, the main message, the part of the story worth hoping and living for, is in fact the message that is loudly celebrated across the globe today, as it has been for two thousand years. ‘Unto us a child is born, unto us a Saviour is given’. Now that is worth celebrating.

The Christmas story, rightfully so, focuses on the Christ child, not the daunting experiences of the parents or other adults in the story.

Can we not make a similar comparison, in general terms, with the school year? What happens during a school year is sometimes challenging, but the efforts of all supporting adults should be very much secondary to the celebrations related to the students and these should be loud and most definitely joyful. Spanning the school year are many joyful events; however, it is Term 4 where a school like Redeemer really celebrates achievements, milestones and transitions, and Term 4, 2014 was most definitely a term of wonderful celebrations for the students of Redeemer. Thank you for a great year.

It’s the end of the year, and now we have to face the reports that encapsulate and evaluate the year’s progress. The good that has been achieved is made public, and the slips and omissions brought to light. It is a time of both celebration and commiseration.

I’m feeling this in an even stronger way this year. I’ve been here for nine years now, but, like the graduating class, won’t be coming back. I now have a complete record to look back on and see what I have received and achieved.

What I have received has been wonderful. I have had the opportunity to be in an excellent Christian school with exciting ministry partners.

I have good friendships and deep enrichment. I have received both intellectual stimulation and personal care. I have also had a chance to contribute. I’ve enjoyed my ministry here and have often been gratified by the impact in people’s lives.

But there is also another side. There are some areas where I have not done so well, and quite a few where I’ve left a lot undone. And now I won’t have a chance to make good on these things. There is no longer time to say, “I’ll do better next year,” “I’ll get into that someday,” or “Or I’ll fix that up next term.” A line has been drawn and the deficits of my ministry here are now permanent.

I have to admit that this was getting me down for a number of weeks.

But then I recalled the college motto, “Our Hope is in Christ.” Indeed if there is one thing that I have been passionate about, it has been this message that our value and our purpose, our hope and life, are given to us through faith in Christ. I would tell any student suffering with exam stress that it is important to strive hard, but that in the end their relationship with God and who they truly are is not dependent on their marks. Now it is time to remember that lesson for myself.

The freedom of having a grounding in Jesus allows me to be entirely honest about what I have not done well. My identity is not at stake, my sense of value does not rest on my achievements. It also frees me to rejoice in the good things I have achieved and been a part of.

The foundation of hope in Jesus creates room where celebration and commiseration can be truly honest and real, without determining who I am. It is truly freeing. I can learn my lessons and move on without being bound to those lessons.

My prayer is that we will all be able to rejoice in our successes, learn from our mistakes, and know that our hope is in Christ.

Over the past 6 months, Redeemer Lutheran College has been a hive of activity as our extended community celebrated and participated in various community activities and events.

In this edition of Redeemer Record, we look at some of the highlights of our community over Semester 2: from our first ever 30 Year Reunion of Redeemer’s foundation class of 1984 and Our Saviour congregation’s 30th anniversary, to Redeemer Fair, Helping Hands ministry and end of year ceremonies, including the Senior Formal, Sports Awards Evening, Valedictory Service and Celebration Ceremonies.

We give thanks and celebrate our Redeemer community and its partnerships.

Redeemer lends a Helping Hand If you have visited Redeemer Lutheran College recently, you may have noticed a bright canary yellow van which has recently appeared at the front of the Redeemer Chapel!

This van belongs to an organisation called “Helping Hands”. Helping Hands had its beginnings in 2009 with two founders working from a suburban garage. The aim was simple with profound effects - to reach out to those who struggle with life and lend a helping hand. They could be people who find themselves isolated, sleeping outside or in hostels, less advantaged, or just enjoy a cuppa and chat on a regular basis.

Our Saviour Lutheran Church and Redeemer Lutheran College commenced a joint partnership with Helping Hands in June, to undertake a similar venture in our local community. This outreach and service ministry has gone from strength to strength in a very short period of time, and we would formally like to acknowledge and thank the Redeemer and Our Saviour communities for their overwhelming support of this ministry.

The van is located at the front of Redeemer Chapel. Each Friday night, starting at about 5.45pm, it is packed with loads of fresh bread, canned food, sandwiches, hot dogs, frozen meals, cupcakes and hot water for tea/coffee/milo. And in the winter months – beanies and scarves.

Our three points of call in the Mount Gravatt area are in a block of Housing Commission flats where a good number of retirees live, followed by an indigenous hostel for mothers and children, and lastly, the Mount Gravatt Community Centre where an African youth group meets before heading off to the city to evangelise.

The aim was simple with profound effects – to reach out to those who struggle with life and lend a helping hand.

The Housing Commission flats have an eclectic range of folk. Some are lonely.

Some have health issues. Some are stuck at home with no vehicle. Some are disconnected from family and friends.

Some are struggling financially. Over the past weeks the Helping Hands team have become like family, and the oldies genuinely look forward to our visits where they can be amongst friends and be made to feel special. In the very first weeks there, a man called John introduced me to his precious Fox Terrier, Rosie. She is the apple of his eye. When I remembered both his and Rosie’s names the following week, he was overcome with joy that I had even remembered – or even cared.

At the indigenous hostel where single mums and kids are recovering from the breakdown of relationships, you should see the little kids’ eyes light up when they get a hot dog or a cupcake or a beanie, or when Hagen does magic tricks! It is just beautiful. Their smiles are priceless!

What we do is about building relationships.

It’s about building people up.

It’s about being Jesus’ hands and feet.

It’s about serving.

It’s about giving.

It’s about being inclusive. It’s about love – sharing Jesus’ love with others.

I personally have derived a great deal of pleasure from serving others through Helping Hands. This experience has changed me. Just like my 2008 ALWS Teacher Study Tour to PNG, when I was deeply moved afterwards.

I find myself once again deeply moved.

I’m excited at the prospect of a deeper relationship between Redeemer Lutheran College and Our Saviour Lutheran Church.

And I think that Helping Hands is the answer. The fellowship that I have shared, not only with those whom we serve, but other Redeemer and Our Saviour members on the van run, has been remarkable and life changing. We as a collective group have shared wonderful times getting to know each other as well as serving and showing love to people in our community.

Thank you for giving of your time, your gifts and talents, for your prayer and encouragement and support, and sharing what you have with others. Each week we feel uplifted at what God has helped provide through you.

Helping hands provides an opportunity for Redeemer and Our Saviour congregation to work in partnership to minister to vulnerable people in our local community. Every Friday, people wait eagerly at the various stops for the van to arrive. Some need food, others require clothing, but all enjoy a hot drink and conversation. I’m sure that for many, it is the highlight of their week. This real life experience helps students develop compassion for others, learn about poverty and gain a better understanding of the vulnerable and disadvantaged. Serving in this way is personally rewarding and humbling.

I pray that the Lord continues to give us the donations and resources to continue His work through Helping Hands.

I saw Helping Hands as an opportunity to serve people less fortunate than myself. I have loved making a difference to their lives not only by giving them food but also companionship. I have realised that by giving up something so small – a few hours of my night makes a big difference to the life of others.

Helping Hands is simple and that’s what I love about it. We simply go out in Jesus’ name and help out – nothing more to it. Whether with a meal, a warm blanket, a coffee or a conversation. And God has been blessing those simple interactions.

We’re putting smiles on people’s faces, we’re having chats about God and we’re forging community.

I cook and make sure it’s something special for the kids. I had a ball serving food talking to the oldies but the best part of all was playing with the little kids with a ball – they cried when we left! A great experience everyone should try it. You will realise how lucky you are.

Junior School News Our staff ensure there is a specific goal in mind and purpose to every activity, whether it be to further our students’ understanding and awareness of issues, build relationships across the wider college or create a fun experience that fully engages all participants.

Our students love attending excursions, incursions and camps and other activities outside the normal classroom environment. With these events the students enjoy the opportunity to spend time with their friends from other classes, the chance to create relationships with other students across other year levels, being away from their books and pencils for a period of time and experiencing and learning something new.

Our staff spend a great deal of time selecting the appropriate excursion venue, incursion, activities or camp experiences for each year level. Staff ensure incursions align with curriculum content so that students can consolidate their learning. In regards to other planned activities, our staff ensure there is a specific goal in mind and purpose to the activity, whether it be to further our students’ understanding and awareness of issues, build relationships across the wider college or create a fun experience that fully engages all participants.

Early Years News The fun in the Early Years continued in Semester 2 with the P-2 students lighting up the stage with their performances at Redeemer Fair. Parents, grandparents and friends filled the pews to get a glimpse of their loved ones singing along and dancing to catchy tunes.

This wasn’t just a time for parents to respond with wonderment and awe but it also taught our students to work collaboratively and strive for accuracy. These performances sparked students’ creativity, gave them an appreciation of The Arts and many students increased in self-confidence.

The enthusiasm, teamwork and dedication of the students was pleasing to witness and they should be proud of their efforts.

The time and preparation put into these performances by teachers is also much appreciated.

Mrs Christina Bianchi Pastoral Care Leader: Prep-Year 2 (Early Years)

Upper Primary Years News 2014 brought about big changes in the Upper Primary Years. The Junior School expanded to include an additional 87 Year 6 students within the MH and MI Blocks precinct. From a pastoral care perspective, the leadership and behavioural example set by the Year 6 students in 2014 has been incredibly impressive and demonstrated their level of maturity.

Opportunities provided for all Year 3-6 students to participate in lunchtime sporting programs created opportunities for consolidation of existing and the development of new friendships. These bonds will be invaluable as students move through the years within collaborative learning environments.

Overall, the collegiality of students from Years 3-6 has been the defining factor of 2014. Their consideration and understanding of each other are personality traits that will ensure the continuation of the supportive, caring nature of the Upper Primary Years.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS | REDEEMER RECORD

Baby blankets and hats for Junior School Cambodian Orphanage Swimming Carnival A group of Year 6 students have been involved in a knitting club in the Junior Library to knit hats and baby blanket squares for a Cambodian orphanage. These items will be distributed by Mr Col Stiller and students from Redeemer Lutheran College at the end of this year.

Year 3 Visits to Senior School Design Technology In Term 3, Year 3 students have been involved in an incursion program to the Senior School Design Technology workshop. The visits have involved the Year 3 students working with Year 11 Technology Studies and Manufacturing students to “build� gifts for Fathers Day. Much hammering of nails took place, with only a few sore thumbs occurring in the process! Each student designed a unique gift to share on Fathers Day. The program provides opportunities for the design process to be implemented across year levels. The junior students were encouraged and supervised by the senior students to safely and confidently manipulate tools and materials in a workshop environment. The senior students enjoyed sharing their knowledge and experience.

Positive communication skills and partnerships were developed through this activity.

The Junior School Swimming Carnival was held on Friday 21 November 2014. Congratulations to Lavarack House for taking out first place with 472 points! Second place: Wilson (385 points), Third Place: Mansfield House (356 points), Fourth Place: Ramsay House (351 points).

Senior School News Philippians 2:1-2 declares, “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.”

We rise by lifting others Koinonia is a Greek word meaning ‘being in harmony and fellowship with others, being united in purpose, and serving alongside each other’. To rise, we must lift others - our fellowship with each other, should mirror our fellowship with Jesus Christ.

Beyond the classroom, parents, staff and students continuously work in partnership for the greater good of the Redeemer community.

The most tangible example of this shared effort would have to be the success of Redeemer Fair.

I have always been thankful for being a part of a caring Redeemer koinonia. A community where Christ is at the centre and relationships with others are strengthened by the values of integrity, care, excellence, service and self-discipline; these guide our vision and our actions.

Each individual, staff, student and parent, has a part to play in a thriving community. Thank you to every individual who has given their time and toiled for the good of the Senior School. May our fellowship and unity always reflect the one body of Christ. May we rise by lifting others.

This year, we celebrated the genesis of a 7-12 Senior School, embracing a new identity and bigger family. The Year 7 students transitioned to Senior School with the help of their Home Group teachers and Pastoral Care Leader, Miss Lauren Krenske.

The Year 8 students blossomed under the care of their teachers and Pastoral Care Leader, Mr Michael Trott.

Mr Adrian Ford enthusiastically led the Year 9 students and prepared them for their four week outdoor education experience at Tuchekoi.

The Year 9 students ended the year with a trip to Dreamworld.

This was a wonderful opportunity to commune and celebrate the transition from the Middle Years to the Senior Years program.

Throughout the year, 7-12 Senior School students have bonded by spreading House pride, team spirit and challenging their rivals for the House Shield. Congratulations to Lavarack House for their victory in 2014. Thank you to the Pastoral Care Leaders, Mrs Janelle Hughes, Mrs Marie Hughes, Mr Brad Lawrence and Mr Grant Symons for fostering a caring community amongst the House members.

Each day the Senior School teachers foster community in the classroom by encouraging respect for others, engaging students through teacher-student mentoring and planning collaborative learning activities that strengthen relationships.

When the word koinonia was coined all those years ago, the Greeks couldn’t have imagined that in the future, learning management systems like My Big Campus would transform the learning dynamics in the classroom and online. My Big Campus has provided opportunities for students to peer mentor and to work collaboratively, outside the four walls of the classroom, anywhere, anytime.

Middle Years News 2014 has marked the first year of the new Middle Years program as part of the Redeemer Senior School. Years 7 and 8 have been the mainstay of the Middle Years cohort as the Year 9 students were still in their vertical Home Groups for this year.

A ‘precinct’ was established for the Middle Years students, which gave them exclusive use of a number of areas of the campus, whilst still allowing them use of all Senior School facilities and we looked to build on this physical space to establish an identity as Middle Years students.

It is difficult to know how to gauge the success of such a fledgling program after just its first year of being, but as Director of the Middle Years I have certainly rated this year as a successful introduction to the program and look forward to extending the program in 2015 when the Year 9 students will join us in Year 9 Home Groups and will be provided with the opportunity to display their increasing leadership potential.

At the start of the year we were very conscious of the need for students of Middle Years age to have the opportunity for physical activity. This was certainly embraced by the Year 7 students who were so keen to play ‘handball’ during their breaks that we needed to construct a second court to accommodate the numbers playing.

Our older Year 8 students in the main were not that keen on handball but were keen to use Scurr Oval, especially after a supply of sports equipment was purchased for their use.

The area surrounding the Middle Years classrooms was well used not only for physical pursuits as students enjoyed the responsibility and trust of being able to work outside of the classroom walls often utilizing the technology that was available to them and the extensive college wireless network. At almost any given time it was possible to see students either working alone or collaborating in small groups completing work in an environment which they found peaceful

and conducive to work. This did not detract from the rigour of the academic program which was evident by the success of many of the Middle Years students in academic competitions, NAPLAN and their own personal studies.

Each term we set goals for the Middle Years students, often surrounding involvement in the co-curricular program, uniform and becoming a more caring group of students. Some of these goals were certainly achieved with our set targets being ‘smashed’ by the enthusiasm of the cohort. I was particularly proud of the way our students wore their uniform – not perfect but displaying a real pride in their appearance and the fact that they were Redeemer students.

Others we will continue to work on as the success has not been as great as we would have liked it.

One area in which we cannot fault our Middle Years students is in their participation in activities outside of the classroom. In looking at the rate of participation, we find that over 95% of our students (all but 11 students) have been involved in activities of some kind; whether they have been part of the sporting program, the music program, service activities or other available co-curricular activities.

Our aim for 2015 is 100%. A bold target? Yes! But one which I think is achievable.

The achievements of the Middle Years program were certainly reflective of the wonderful staff who worked with them either as Home Group teachers, Pastoral Care Leaders or general subject teachers. These people have worked very hard to achieve our goals and I thank them immensely.

Like many of the first Middle Years cohort, I am looking forward to 2015 when we will once again look to making the Middle Years program a strength of the Senior School at Redeemer Lutheran College. As one of the students said to me at the end of the year – “Watch this space!”

The Community Service Committee held their last fundraising event for 2014 last Wednesday when they held Redeemer’s first ever Ice Bucket Challenge. Over $600 was collected and will be donated to Helping Hands and Motor Neurone Research. Thank you to the ‘cool’ Year 12 students who participated and to the staff who helped with set up, supervision etc.

Year 7s Explore Canberra Redeemer Races around the Ekka!

All 62 excited Year 7 students and four teachers hopped on the bus on Saturday night, ready for the 16 hour trip to Canberra. On the way to Canberra, we stopped at Taronga Zoo in Sydney where we saw lots of interesting animals and the Seal Show. We travelled from Taronga Zoo to Circular Quay via one of the Sydney Harbour ferries.

We walked to a park where we had a picnic of Subway. Then the tired students got back on the bus for the 4 hour trip to Canberra.

The next day we headed off to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

We were lucky enough to see the Australian Gymnastic team practising their routines before the Commonwealth Games. The equipment at the AIS was amazing and very impressive. After the AIS, we learnt about how money is made at the Royal Australian Mint. We then headed off to Questacon, a giant science museum. We particularly enjoyed the Free Fall slide, where you fall from 6 metres in air. Our last stop of the day was Black Mountain Tower where we were able to see an amazing view of Canberra.

On Tuesday 12 August, Redeemer’s Film and Television students participated in Race around the Ekka! This year we had four teams enter the 24 hour ‘Race Around the EKKA’ film competition. Last Tuesday, students filmed at the EKKA and spent the public holiday putting their advertisements together. The entries were uploaded to Facebook for viewers’ choice competition which closed last Friday.

While Redeemer did not win, the video clip titled ‘The Wizard of the EKKA’ created by Lewis Masters, Jeremy Lie, Nicola Wormwell, Jessica Bertschy and Jonathon Jones did do very well with 305 votes!

Outdoor Education – An experience of a lifetime At dinner we were mixed around to sit with new people. It was fun getting to know people better.

The surprising delicious camp food products, the quiet yet lively environment and the warm campfire were all something I’ve never experienced before.

The hike in all was a great experience. We got to know everyone a lot better and had a blast while being challenged.

At night, our group had a camp fire and looked at the stars in the sky. It was a very great experience for me and everyone who is in our group.

Principal’s Report • Further strengthen teacher practice which is responsive to student needs and teacher professional development so as to equip and empower teachers in this dynamic period of change in education.

Survey results and general and specific feedback continue to highlight Redeemer’s excellent pastoral care across the whole college. Be that as it may, Redeemer seeks to continually improve its Pastoral Care service to its families and where possible the wider community. Our Vertical House system provides many avenues to strengthen relationships across the various year levels.

In the nationwide scheme of Lutheran Education, 2014 is a very special year as it marks the 175th anniversary of Lutheran Education in Australia. Redeemer, along with Lutheran schools across Australia, celebrated this significant milestone in thankful recognition to the pioneer German Lutherans who sought to improve life for their children by building schools and in so doing gifted to the wider community the Lutheran Education system serving Australia today.

The focus on the academic life of the College for 2014 commenced with the OP1 ceremony involving Kristen Bertschy, Lucy Griffin, Kobe Ko, and Karl Ko with the four OP1 recipients perfectly matching Redeemer’s average. The graduating class of 2013 performed almost 10% above the State average in the OP1-5 category, which again is the expected range for this Redeemer statistic.

In 2014, Redeemer’s NAPLAN results continued to reflect the academic success experienced across the College. For the second consecutive year, our student scores were higher than State and National averages in each area tested in every year level. Tracking of cohorts over the last seven years also indicate that Redeemer students improve at a greater rate than their State and National counterparts. This success is testament to the support of our parents, the commitment of our students, and the dedication of all staff across the College.

Throughout 2014, broader learning activities continued across the College with the Canberra Tour being unusual this year in that both the Year 6s and the Year 7s visited Canberra as a consequence of Year 7 moving to the secondary level of schooling in 2015. The Canberra Tour’s move to Year 6 in 2014 changes in significance to some extent as it transitions from being a Middle Years activity to being the pinnacle or mountain-top experience of the Junior School.

Over the next two to three years as Redeemer moves to becoming a 21st Century Learning Community, I assure parents that Redeemer will: • Maintain its high standards in literacy, numeracy, scientific inquiry and in the subject disciplines, retaining the teaching of traditional academic skills and practices.

• Utilise IT as both teaching and learning tools, not just teaching tools (hence Redeemer’s My Big Campus & BYOD initiatives); • Develop new pedagogical strategies to incorporate teaching and learning approaches such as more individualised student learning, collaborative learning between students, and an increased focus on encouraging creativity;

In response to specific concerns from parents and staff, significant resources at Redeemer were allocated to strengthening the transitioning of Year 6 and the new Year 7 students to the Senior School for 2015 and beyond. Mr Matt Fasso (Pastoral Care Leader Years 3-6) and Ms Lauren Krenske (Pastoral Care Leader Year 7) coordinated very well across the Junior School - Senior School divide, making the most of Redeemer’s Prep to Year 12 environment. Earlier in 2014, the Year 6s were provided a Transition Passport to Year 7 which has included a range of familiarisation activities during 2014. Year 6s also competed against the Year 7s in the ‘Transition Cup’ which involved sporting and trivia contests throughout the year. The Year 6s had their timetable modified as 2014 progressed, preparing them for the two week cycle that operates in the Senior School, including daily homework and learning to use their pigeon hole as a locker.

Other personal-organisation initiatives also assisted the Year 6s in their awareness of what will be required of them in 2015.

Year 7s played their part in welcoming new Year 8s for 2015 by writing to incoming Year 8s, making them welcome and sharing their experiences of life at Redeemer. Final transition preparations for 2015 have included a Parent Information Evening and an Orientation Day. I take this opportunity to thank all staff who have supported these initiatives in 2014 and I especially thank Mrs Kelli McKeiver (Head of Junior School) and Mr Michael Trott (Director of Middle Years) for their leadership in developing this program.

There has been an abundance of highs in the 2014 Performance Music year with all ensembles consistently exceeding expectations through regular rehearsals and memorable, outstanding performances. 2014 has been one of the finest years for Music at Redeemer.

In the Junior School, all Performance Music students have experienced great musical highs. Our Junior Choir, bigger than ever with over 60 voices, performed beautifully at every occasion.

This choral ensemble is not only an introduction to College vocal ensembles, but a strong musical force in its own right. The same can be said for Junior String Ensemble which has truly flourished this year.

Senior Concert Band won the Queensland Youth Music Awards for the second year running. Placing first in such a high-profile and prestigious event is a great achievement for these hard-working students. Chamber Strings also received a silver award at the same competition and all Senior School ensembles gave equally stunning performances at the Redlands Eisteddfod. Intermediate String Ensemble and Intermediate Concert Band both placed first in their sections, which is wonderful for these ensembles that are growing from strength to strength each year. All choral ensembles had a strong year, also, including a superb performance as part of the Queensland Youth Orchestra’s Concerts at Twilight series

at Brisbane’s Old Museum Building. Redeemer can be very proud of the partnership that it has formed with QYO over the last few years, with numerous Senior School and Junior School students gaining positions as players within that very competitive and world-class organization. Obviously, the music department is full of very fine developing instrumentalists of whom we can be very proud. They continue to inspire us, and each other.

We thank the entire College community for their ongoing support and encouragement of our hard-working and talented young musicians. They are fine ambassadors for the College.

The development of Sport at Redeemer in 2014 continued building on improvements from the previous two years. It was most pleasing to see the increased level of student participation across the board in TAS and JTAS sports and the increased support from parents for the Parent Supporter Groups. It was only fitting then that this increased commitment was rewarded with the introduction of the Sports Award Evening and the three new Sports Awards recognising achievement and most importantly commitment or service to Redeemer Sport. All indications are that the Sports Award Evening will grow to become one of the annual highlights of the year for the Redeemer community.

Parents and students will have noticed that during 2014 Redeemer has significantly increased its use of surveys. Adding to this, the College is able to gather much useful data from Redeemer’s new Web Site and the College App. I assure parents that the constant gathering of information is both helping the College improve protocols and policies or the information has been useful in identifying new and emerging needs. Via the use of these tools, Redeemer seeks to better serve its student and parent community, both in its day-to-day operations as well as its forward planning.

These tools add to the on-going practice of parents providing direct feedback via traditional communication, meetings and the P & F processes.

Community partnerships with the P & F and Our Saviour Lutheran Church have once again been of great benefit to the College in terms of building a strong caring community that models responsible citizenship to our student community, participation through service to others and expressing and exercising the care and love of Christ.

Many parents who arrive at the College each day for drop off and pick up may have noticed a bright canary yellow van. This van belongs to an organisation called “Helping Hands”. Helping Hands had its beginnings in 2009 to reach out to those who struggle with life and lend a helping hand. They could be people who find themselves isolated, sleeping outside or in hostels, less advantaged, or just enjoy a cuppa and chat on a regular basis.

Our Saviour congregation and Redeemer Lutheran College have formed a joint ministry with Helping Hands to undertake a similar venture in our local community. This joint mission venture will become a regular part of Service Learning at the college.

Our Saviour Lutheran Church also supports the co-curricular program via Christian Dance, the reading and giving of Bibles to the Junior School, and their support of Redeemer Fair. Our Saviour continues to be a significant contributor to the community life of Redeemer in 2014, for which we are very thankful.

Parent Supporters Groups and Redeemer Fair, they continue to investigate new initiatives with regards to new community building and fund-raising activities. An uncommon event was the 96.5 and Channel 7 visit just prior to the Fair. P & F’s support of this event was outstanding, with P & F working tirelessly for many hours well before most of us were out of bed.

As per College Council policy, further air-conditioning of the Senior School will take place during the Christmas holidays, the additional air-conditioning will mean that Redeemer will be only about 15% shy of having all classrooms air-conditioned P-12.

We acknowledge the P & F’s on-going financial support for the air-conditioning program.

As announced last year, Senior School redevelopment continues to be the focus of the College’s capital program in order that Redeemer as a whole has contemporary facilities which effectively support all programs offered by the College. The development of the Middle Years precinct will continue with an additional recreation space, the Senior School will see the courtyard completely redeveloped with the provision for outdoor flexible learning spaces, the swimming pool toilets will be upgraded, and a new flexible learning classroom with appropriate furnishings will also be created in the Senior School. The Junior School has not been left out and will see the Science Room modified so that it can ably provide for both Science and Art lessons.

Redeemer has a wonderful staff culture, one that is rich in service, care and professionalism. Throughout 2014, staff have worked very hard in their service to families of Redeemer. Looking across the College, I see overwhelming evidence of hard working, committed and loyal staff in the non-teaching area as well. The beautiful grounds of the College always impress community members and visitors alike and are evidence of a dedicated and creative grounds and maintenance staff; and the cleanliness of our facilities equally reflects a cleaning crew who are professional and proud of what they do. Elsewhere, the academic support staff of the College directly serve the needs of parents and visitors through the various administration roles or in their roles of assisting teachers. In all cases the compliments that flow from the community to the College about the work of our staff are always appreciated.

It is with sadness that we farewell staff from across the College, both teaching and non-teaching. We thank each of them for their service to the families of the College and wish them all the very best for the future. Please join me in thanking Ms Natalie Andrews, Mr Gavin Andrews, Mr Matt Fasso, Mr Frank Ford, Mrs Kellie Hardke, Mr Andrew Kennedy, Mrs Sue Moloney, and Pastor Matthew Thomas, for their service to the students and families of the Redeemer community.

In closing, I thank the College Council for their leadership of Redeemer this year, at the governance level of the College it has been an interesting year as the Council grappled with the ever changing Government policies and emerging needs of 21st century education. I thank College Council for their dedication, guidance and support of the Staff Executive and of me personally.

College Council Report As 2014 draws to a close for Redeemer Lutheran College I report as follows.

The sub-school restructure was introduced at the beginning of 2014. The State Government mandated “Year 7 into High School”, formally commences in 2015. Redeemer decided to commence this change in 2014 as it was considered the best way to meet the needs of the students and allowed the College to introduce other sub-school changes to facilitate improved pastoral care. The College now has two sub-schools: Junior School (Prep-Year 6) and Senior School (Years 7-12). Within the Senior sub-school, the College has introduced the Middle Years (7-9) program. This program will continue the many positive attributes of the Middle School as well as incorporate new features that will facilitate the transition from Junior School to the final years of Senior School. This program has a strong emphasis on Pastoral Care.

The College introduced the learning management system, “My Big Campus”, in the second semester of 2013. Use of this system has increased in 2014, with some imaginative presentations being placed online by staff. The introduction of “My Big Campus” will allow the College to continue bringing 21st Century learning to the students.

One of the objectives of the 2013-2015 Strategic Plan is to review the College’s Chaplaincy program to assess its effectiveness. With Pastor Paul Thiele accepting the call to Good News Congregation and School at Middle Park, Brisbane at the beginning of the year, College Council agreed to complete this review prior to calling a replacement Pastor. The review was completed and College Council is now in the process of determining to whom they should extend a call. After Pastor Paul moved to Middle Park at the end of Term 1, Lay Chaplains were appointed to continue the pastoral care program. At the end of this year, Pastor Matt Thomas, who served Redeemer on a part-time basis, leaves to accept a call to a position in Melbourne. College Council appreciates the contributions that both Pastor Paul and Pastor Matt made over the many years they served at the College and thanks them for their efforts.

I acknowledge the partnership that Redeemer has with Our Saviour Lutheran Church as we celebrate its thirtieth year. This partnership sees a regular worshipping community in the Redeemer Chapel.

This community provides a living witness to “Our Hope is in Christ”.

The College has had a focus this year on revitalizing the older existing facilities. This revitalization will continue over the summer holidays with remodelling occurring in the senior school courtyard and a number of classrooms having air conditioning installed.

During the September school holidays in 2015, Redeemer will be hosting the Lutheran Church of Australia General Convention of Synod. Delegates from Lutheran congregations from all around Australia and New Zealand will be attending this convention which is generally held every 3 years. The Synod helps to set the future directions for the Lutheran Church.

Redeemer Fair, which is organised by the Parents and Friends Association, was a very successful event again this year. On behalf of College Council, I thank the many parents, students and staff who volunteered their time over an extended period of time to make this such a great event.

Redeemer would not function as well as it does without all the work of the auxiliaries, such as Parents and Friends Association, Sporting Supporter groups, Music Supporters, Past Parents and Friends, Alumni, Redeemer Foundation, Our Saviour congregation and the list goes on. To all of the auxiliaries and the associated volunteers, I and College Council thank you.

I want to thank College Councillor, Caroline Ryan, who retired this year, for her service to the College over many years. I take this opportunity to thank the members of College Council who volunteer their time to function as the College’s governing body and ensure that the College remains founded on God’s Word, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Redeemer Lutheran College Foundation The Redeemer Lutheran College Foundation was reactivated at an Annual General Meeting held on Monday 24 November 2014. On Tuesday 2 December 2014 the Foundation Board met for the first time. Parents and Friends Association Firstly, I would like to say that it has been an absolute privilege to represent the college as President. Although my inaugural year as president has not been without some challenges I would like to acknowledge some of the highlights for the P & F Association:

I would also like to thank Mr David Radke and Mrs Kelli Mckeiver for their support of the P & F and availability to attend most meeting and quite often be able to answer questions that have been raised by other parents.

• Complete funding of the Junior School slide to enable it to be usable now and in the future.

• Funded the cost of three additional water bubblers around the college.

• Contribution to decking around the mango tree in front of the chapel for better use of this area.

• Funding of Redeemer Fair / Channel 7 – 96.5 FM visit.

• Funding inaugural Sports Awards with trophies for major award winners and ongoing support of this event.

• Purchase of two 6x4 Redeemer branded marquee’s for the Sports department.

• Junior School Disco continues to be a success.

• Funding of the subscription for ‘Sustainable School Shop’ for all parents.

The ongoing success of the Redeemer P & F Association relies very heavily on the support of all parents within the school and I would encourage you all to come along in 2015 and get involved by supporting your Parent body that has a real voice within the school.

I would also like to acknowledge the Management team of the P & F publicly because without the efforts of these wonderful ladies a lot of things may never have got off the ground.

Meetings are held once a month from 7.00pm on a Monday night and all are welcome to attend, the more support our association gains the easier it is for us all to assist the children of our wonderful college in whatever way required in the future.

If attendance at monthly meetings is not your thing then volunteers are always welcome for everything from Supporter Groups to assisting at the Fair.

In closing, it would absolutely remiss of me to not acknowledge the many years of support of some of the colleges most loyal servants as both supporters of the P & F and willing volunteers for many years in many ways. A large number of these parent’s children graduated from Redeemer this year and their commitment to the college has been unwavering and for this we are forever grateful.

Rugby Supporters

Music Supporters

Redeemer Rugby Supporters would like to thank family, friends and students for their contributions during the 2014 season.

The Supporters Barbecue has been a tradition for many years.

On home game Saturday mornings, the barbecue provides refreshments for spectators and players. I encourage new parents to get involved. It is an opportunity to support the players, meet other parents and creates a sense of community at the grounds.

New members are most welcome.

The year started off busy with the issuing of the school Music uniform to all students involved in ensembles, either instrumental or vocal. Members of the Music Supporters Group came in during lunch times and other rehearsal times to issue the uniforms.

New uniforms had to be purchased this year due to the continued growth of the school’s music program.

All proceeds from the barbecue benefit Redeemer Rugby. This year funds raised were used to purchase Training Shirts for the players across all year levels.

It is time to farewell to the Year 12 families who have played an integral part in Redeemer Rugby and the Supporters group.

In particular our thanks go to the Furlonger, Martyn, Schwarz, Lobegeier and Grant families who have donated their time and efforts over many years to the benefit of Redeemer Rugby.

We wish them all the best with their future endeavours.

Soccer Supporters Redeemer Soccer had a great year thanks to the dedicated players and coaches. Congratulations to all those involved, your achievements are a credit yourselves and the school.

Soccer Supporters provide refreshments at home games and relies on the support of volunteers. The Soccer Supporters Barbecue provides the opportunity to meet other parents and encourage our teams. Proceeds from the barbecue are used to benefit players. Thank you to the parents who have helped out this year on the barbecue.

2014 was another highly successful year for all the music students at Redeemer. The annual concert program was as jam packed as usual which kept the Music Supporters Group very busy organising, managing and cleaning up the supper offered to all students and parents at these events.

The group also helped to feed the music students, at afternoon tea time, during weekend workshops for all of the senior music groups. These workshops were organised to help further develop the musical abilities of our students in preparation for the competitions they were involved in throughout the year.

Redeemer Fair was another busy time for the group as they operated the Coffee Shop in the Multi-Purpose Centre. The group also worked with the staff to help in fundraising for new instruments for the expanding program.

As mentioned, the music department had a fantastically successful year. We would like to sincerely thank the staff for their dedication and continual support of the students both in and out of school hours. Their passion for their job certainly motivates the groups and inspires them to be the best they can.

Thank you also to the parents of the music students. Your support of your child’s musical education through your early drop offs, late pickups, weekend visits to the school and night time concerts and eisteddfods is outstanding.

2014 saw our group grow in numbers which was wonderful.

As they say many hands make light work. Children love to see their parents involved in their school life (from a distance sometimes) and do appreciate their interest even if they don’t always show it. What better way to help out than join a supporters’ group. We meet for 1 hour each month and would love to see new faces, so please take up this invitation in 2015 and help us to help support the staff and students in another wonderful year of music at Redeemer.

At the end of 2014, we are also sad to farewell the following executive staff member, and staff who have served Redeemer in excess of 10 years.

“End of an Era” Farewell Sue Moloney It is with both sadness and celebration that we farewell our Head of Information Services, Mrs Sue Moloney, at the end of the year. There is joy in this announcement for Sue as she will be the new Director of Libraries at Methodist Ladies’ College in Melbourne from next year. Sue was appointed to this position based on her proven track record here at Redeemer of supporting students and teachers in the teaching and learning process. She is also recognised as a leader in information and digital literacies, for her innovation and her understanding of educational trends.

It is quite ironic that her era at Redeemer began during the heights of Y2K hysteria in July of 1999. Sue has masterfully evolved the Information and Library service facilities and resources during this time. Her love of literature and young people has ensured that an extensive Fiction collection can be enjoyed in print and digital form in comfortable surrounds at the college or at home.

Sue will be sorely missed by all our students and staff, but we wish her all the best for the next chapter in her professional career.

Thank You and God Bless Pastor Matt As Pastor Matt prepares to leave the Redeemer and Our Saviour communities for his new role in Melbourne, I reflect on the six years of the past nine years which I have spent working with him.

I will always remember Pastor Matt for his illustrated devotions which often included props which he used so effectively to engage students. One of his most memorable devotions was the one he gave for the opening of the Multi-Purpose Centre, in which he used giant children’s blocks on the stage to illustrate the importance of constructing our lives on a firm foundation; there are many other memorable Pastor Matt devotions I could refer to.

As Principal, I will also remember Pastor Matt as the first Chaplain of the Junior School, a role he more or less had to invent, which at times I’m sure was difficult for him. But Pastor Matt is not the complaining type, despite the College constantly modifying his role where pastoral or ministry needs were evident.

Throughout his years of service to Redeemer, Pastor Matt always had the care of both students and staff on his mind as the most important of his tasks, to this end he was always trying to find ways to help or improve the lives of others.

Pastor Matt will be missed by many, especially those students, parents and staff who are active in both the Redeemer and Our Saviour communities. On behalf of the College, I thank Pastor Matt for all that he has done and wish him and his family God’s richest blessings as they move to a new ministry.

Mr David Radke, Principal We farewell Matt Thomas at the end of this year and thank him for his work in the Junior School. Matt has worked hard building relationships with parents, staff and students and consolidating the link with the Our Saviour Congregation. We thank Matt, in particular for coordinating the Bible Readers for our Prep students, for his work with Junior School House Leaders, the teaching and supervising the Junior School Chess Club, for his sense of humour and the care and concern he readily displayed to others.

Mrs Kelli McKeiver, Head of Junior School Pastor Matt Thomas and his family became part of our community in 2006, the year prior to the Junior School opening its doors. He has faithfully served in both the College and Our Saviour congregation and as of next year will take up a new call in the Victorian District of the Lutheran Church of Australia.

I wish you God’s blessings on behalf of the Redeemer community.

Redeemer introduces BYOD

Senior School Refurbishments A major landscaping project is currently being undertaken to transform the Senior School Court Yard area between SL & SM Blocks into a modern and highly usable hub for Senior School students. A number of areas of interest including an outdoor stage, seating nooks using a combination of timber and off form concrete, multi textured surfaces including colored and pebbled concrete, artificial turf and mounds, rubber flooring, lighting and new water bubblers will be incorporated.

Other works include a full refurbishment of the pool toilets, new carpet in the Kleinschmidt Centre, development of a new Middle Years recreation space including basketball and netball hoops with seating; creation of a new large creative flexible learning space in SM Block where the House Leader offices were previously located.

Redeemer Lutheran College is introducing a voluntary BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program in 2015, which will enable students in Years 3-12 to bring their own portable devices (eg, tablets, iPads and laptops) to school as part of their learning journey.

A BYOD program not only develops digital literacies and responsibilities in students, but also literacy, numeracy and collaborative, creativity and inquiry skills. Students come to appreciate ICTs not just as a social or entertainment device, but also a work tool.

Redeemer will continue to roll out new air conditioning in the Senior School with the installation of a new plant into eight classrooms across SE and SH Blocks in 2015. It is expected that the four rooms in SE Block will be up and running for Term 1, with SH Block to be completed in the June/July holiday period.

Springboard 2014 Wednesday 22 October 2014

Celebrating Technology Subjects at Redeemer The Senior School curriculum area of Technology at Redeemer Lutheran College encompasses the distinct, but related subjects of Home Economics, Hospitality, Early Childhood Studies, Food and Textile Technology, Design Technology, Graphics, Manufacturing, Technology and Manufacturing Studies, Technology Studies, Information Technology Systems, Information Processing Technology and Information Technology.

It is exciting to announce the 2015 College Musical, ‘My Fair Lady’.

This musical is based upon George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion.

My Fair Lady is a gloriously witty adaptation of the Broadway musical about Professor Henry Higgins, who takes a bet from Colonel Pickering that he can transform unrefined, Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a lady, and fool everyone into thinking she really is one, too! He does, and thus young aristocrat Freddy Eynsford-Hill falls madly in love with her. But when Higgins takes all the credit and forgets to acknowledge her efforts, Eliza angrily leaves him for Freddy, and suddenly Higgins realizes he’s grown accustomed to her face and can’t really live without it.

The musical’s 1956 Broadway production was a hit, setting what was then the record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. It was followed by a hit London production, a popular film version, and numerous revivals. It has been called “the perfect musical”.

The 2015 production of ‘My Fair Lady’ will be held on 1-2 May 2015 at the Logan Entertainment Centre.

Springboard Visual Art People’s Choice Award 2014 Springboard 2014 was a huge success, displaying the talents of many students across a diverse range of creative practical areas!

This year’s People’s Choice Award for Visual Art, donated by School Art Supplies, was won by Stephanie Lynch, Year 12 and the runner-up was Kacey Chalmers, Year 10.

2014 Sports Awards Evening On Wednesday 5 November, Redeemer Lutheran College held its first annual Sports Awards Evening in a number of years at Redeemer Chapel, acknowledging all of the outstanding achievements from each of our students involved in Sport across 2014.

The Sports Awards Evening aims to be as encompassing as possible of sports achievements for the year, it does so recognizing that sports is a genuine pathway to a successful career. Sporting ability is as much God given as academic, music, cultural or artistic abilities, and the evening will also recognize that Redeemer students achieve in sports outside of the usually recognized TAS sports.

We thank our special guests for the evening, 2011 Redeemer past student, Clay Cameron (AFL Gold Coast Suns) and Professional Basketballer, and Olympian, Natalie Taylor with us. It was also a special occasion having many of the original donors of the perpetual trophies with us to present their awards. The Parents and Friends Association also played a large role this year donating three new trophies that I am sure will become the most prized awards for many years to come.

Congratulations to Jessica Lynch (Sportswoman of the Year), Matthew Stanfield (Sportsman of the Year), Tamara Foster and Adam Barry (Blue Spirit Award) for winning these inaugural trophies.

It is recognition of their individual sporting abilities, hard work and service to Redeemer Sport in 2014. We look forward to continuing this tradition in 2015 and we look forward to seeing who the winners are in 2015. The only way to win is to commit yourself and be the best that you can be each and every week.

Principal’s Portrait Commissioned Following tradition at Redeemer, College Council commissioned a painted portrait of Principal, David Radke, to hang in the College Boardroom alongside portraits of our two former Principals.

We are delighted that a Redeemer student, Jason Lin (Year 12) was selected to undertake the portrait. Jason painted an impressionist oil on canvas painting, based on a posed photo, which now hangs with pride in the College Boardroom. Jason conducted himself most professionally, from commencement of the project by providing art direction with the photo shoot, right through to ensuring delivery of an exceptional piece of artwork.

The painting was presented to Redeemer’s College Council at their meeting on 16 October 2014.

96five Family Show and 7 News Chopper visit Redeemer Wednesday 22 October 2014, 6.00am–9.20am Come see the 96five Family Show, Liam, Robbie and Ness, and Romeo the Radio Dog as they take their breakfast show on the road with the Family Show School Excursion to Redeemer!

They’ll be broadcasting live from 6.00am–9.00am and there will be loads of other fun family activities including a jumping castle, sporting games, freebies and of course a coffee cart for the parents!

Redeemer and Our Saviour Dancing together for South Sudan

On Saturday 9 August, Our Saviour congregation and families from Redeemer came together for the annual ‘Bush Bonanza for South Sudan’. There was food, dancing and other family fun but the focus of the night was supporting ALWS (Australian Lutheran World Service) and the Kakuma Refugee Camp where many South Sudanese are fleeing. Over $12,500 was raised during the night, money that will go towards repairing classrooms and furniture and desperately needed text books and charts for the schools at Kakuma.

The evening started with a family focus. A jumping castle was inflated, faces were painted and the common area of the Redeemer Junior School started filling with goats, sheep, ducks, chickens and guinea pigs. The petting zoo was run professionally by the Rochedale High State School agricultural students who volunteered their time and animals free of charge – a big thanks to Rochedale High! But the highlight for many of the children was the amazing balloon artistry of Matthew Rentz. The queue for his balloon creations appeared to run the length of the MPC and he only finished up well past 10.00pm!

Next came a real Bush Barbecue, with many thanks from the Our Saviour ‘Blokes 4 Christ’ and many kitchen helpers. Over 330 steak burgers or sausages in a blanket were served throughout the night.

We must also acknowledge the donations of fresh vegetables from Rochedale Markets, Rochedale and Argery’s Quality Meats at Springwood for all the sausages. During dinner Sean Conry, Chaplain at Good News Lutheran Church, Middle Park, spoke with humour and passion about education and the hope that it brings to communities around the world.

At 7.00pm the dancing began led by the fantastic Our Saviour Bush Band. And if bush dancing wasn’t enough, this year Tim Kelly and the band even threw in some classic jazz tracks during the intervals.

Throughout the night, the target of $11,329 slowly grew until 9.40pm we could finally announce that the target had been reached and exceeded. A grand total of $12,532 for ALWS ongoing support for South Sudanese at Kakuma Refugee Camp!

Jonathan Krause, Community Action Manager at ALWS, congratulated the team after the event, ‘Absolutely amazing! The way you have connected with your local community and helped people in need and captured the joy of what it can mean to be part of a church where love comes to life ... it blows me away!

30 Years as faithful partners

Working Together… to build ‘Hope in Christ’

The applause was irresistible. We had to give vent to the emotions stirred by seeing little children, now young adults, dancing to the breathtaking ancient hymn of God as our Vision.

What does Redeemer’s motto “Our Hope is in Christ” have to do with it? The partnership with Our Saviour Lutheran Church is all about building that hope - every student, every staff member, every family, every church. We work together to build lives that are anchored in more than a good education. We nurture “Hope in Christ”. It is the motivation at Christian Dance, playgroup friendships, challenges at youth, lessons at Kids For Christ (Sunday School), the motive of College Council members, the theme of worship, the unity of small groups and the passion of our global mercy. And it works very simply: by hundreds of encouraging relationships. Look at the photos and you’ll see Redeemer grandparents, former students, staff, infants of graduates, youth leaders, band members, Carol singers… You’ll see an intertwining of generations, faith stories, talents, fun-makers, prayer partners. Countless relationships wide open to build “Hope in Christ” in every home and every church and every class.

What a thrill to remember joyful little students praising God, now adults serving him and changing the world. This is just some of the fruit of 30 years as faithful partners.

What kind of 30th anniversary is that? It’s the marriage of Redeemer Lutheran College and Our Saviour Lutheran Church begun on 14 October 1984.

300 gathered last Sunday to celebrate an odd couple, for church and school are different species. But what a match it is, serving a single priority: to make real a Christian culture of family encouragement, student care, teacher support, and life-long faith building.

300 voices have never lifted the Chapel roof like this! How does a choir, band, organ, trumpets, keyboard and lead singers bind nine songs and hymns into a medley of sheer joy? They did!

How do you celebrate so many memories, events, people, mercy missions, lives healed, youth trained, grief shared and families inspired?

We did!

How do you recall the thousands of Redeemer students impacted by creative Christmases, emotional Easters, Youth nights and camps, Christian dance days? Helping Hand efforts? We couldn’t!

Who knows how many weddings have followed, plus baptisms, graduations, faith breakthroughs, friendships built, disciples trained?

A PowerPoint scanned the 30 years (see the link below) recording the miracles of so many lives inspired, faith missions and mercy built, and bonds of deep community. It was a breathtaking journey.

We praised God for Redeemer’s founders, then the Youth group and family outreach parents who began Our Saviour Lutheran Church.

They were joyful worshippers and hard workers. They debated and invented ways to care and pray and worship and invite. Year by year they built. They gathered teachers and students and grandparents; and then a next generation from former students, now parents and teachers.

We rejoiced in all our partner churches too, everywhere and everyone, helping build the unity of Christian character and quality, far beyond a normal school or home.

That’s why this is such a marvellous marriage – Redeemer and Our Saviour. We are a family for families, sharing our hope in Christ, working together for more than we could ever do alone.

Melissa has been working for Education Queensland for the past eight years as a teacher, Head of Curriculum and Pedagogical Coach. Melissa and Jim have been married since April 2007 and live in Brisbane.
