SYNOPSIS OF SCENES ACT 1 Professor Harold Hill has developed a reputation among travelling salesmen and none of it is good. In order to sell his band instruments and uniforms, he promises to form a local student band. After he gets paid, he’s on the next train out of town, leaving the parents out of pocket and without a band. His eyes are now set on River City, Iowa. Harold stumbles across his old friend Marcellus Washburn, who has "gone legit" and now lives in town. Marcellus tells Harold that Marian Paroo, the librarian who gives piano lessons, is the only trained musician in town. To focus attention on the need for a boys' band, he attacks the town's new pool hall as a sign of depravity creeping into the community. His argument is convincing to all except Marian and Mayor Shinn who, it turns out, owns the pool hall. He orders the school board to check out Harold's credentials and Marian takes a closer look into Harold’s past. When the bickering school board approach Harold, he turns them into a barbershop quartet and disappears. The Mayor continues to push for proper credentials, but Harold is slippery. Marian's research pays off, but she withholds the evidence when she discovers Harold is helping her brother, Winthrop, to cure his speech impediment. As the band instruments arrive and Winthrop’s confidence grows, even Marian begins to see Harold in a new light.
INTERVAL (20 minutes)
ACT 2 The River City band members have been busily working on Harold's "Think System" of musicianship. The uniforms arrive but so does Charlie Cowell, the anvil salesman and Harold's arch enemy. Marian tries to prevent Charlie from getting to the Mayor, but is unsuccessful. She meets Harold at the footbridge where she confesses that she has known he was a fake since the third day he was in town. Now it is Harold who is off balance. He still has time to run, but can't - he's hooked on Marian. The angry town, hearing that he's a fake, drags Harold to the town meeting where everyone has gathered. The talk is ugly, but Marian speaks out in his defence. The band arrives in their uniforms and Harold is handed a baton. They ‘think’ their way through their performance and each struggling note is music to their parents’ ears. Even Mayor Shinn is won over, and, as the townspeople cheer, Harold is released into Marian's arms.
