REDEEMER UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

ANNUAL REPORT

CHAIRMAN’s MESSAGE

2

010-11 has been an exciting year for the Board of Governors at Redeemer University College. We have been blessed and we have also dealt with some challenges, but at every turn we have experienced the Lord’s leading and provision. Ironically for me, one of the highlights of this year involved an attack on the integrity of Redeemer University College as a Christian institution. When the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) decided to “investigate” whether Redeemer, as a confessionally Christian university, practiced academic freedom, I was concerned about a possible negative media storm. But our administration and faculty dealt with the challenge in a calm, rational and respectful way and Redeemer ended up receiving an overwhelmingly positive and supportive reaction in the press and from other academics, both Christians and non-Christians. It was a testament to Redeemer’s impact in the Ontario academic community. In part driven by the CAUT incident, we dedicated this year’s Board educational sessions to understanding the place of Christians and Christian institutions in the broader (secular) academic world. These sessions have crystallized for us both the importance of Redeemer’s institutional calling and the challenges our faculty and students face every day.

8

Another highlight of the Board’s work this year centred around the implementation of the four Great Goals of our strategic plan. To keep our momentum going and to measure our progress, the Board has approved a list of “Key Performance Indicators,” more than 80 quantifiable values which relate to the Great Goals. Developing and compiling these KPIs has been an enormous undertaking by our administration and staff and we are grateful for their hard work on this project. The most significant highlight of the year is God’s rich provision for Redeemer. We have enjoyed a record number of students, a balanced budget and, through the generosity of donors, a significant reduction in our overall debt. But nowhere is God’s grace seen more clearly than in His provision of people. He has continued to send us talented and enthusiastic faculty, as well as Board members who are committed volunteers gifted in the wide range of skills the Board requires. He has also given us President Krygsman, who has stepped into his role with skill and enthusiasm. He is a quick study and a genuine communicator who has quickly connected with the entire Redeemer community. He possesses great zeal for the Redeemer mission and presents a winsome face for the institution. The

transition has been as smooth as we could hope for and we are eager to see the great things God will do through Dr. Krygsman at Redeemer. We did experience some bumps and hurdles this past year, such as construction delays and overruns on our soccer dome. Even so, we have a plan to meet the additional cost and remain confident that this facility will not only pay for itself but become a revenue generator for Redeemer University College and more importantly, that it will be a strong link between Redeemer and the community in which we are planted. 2010-11 has been an eventful and rewarding year, and I am honoured and humbled by the opportunity given to me to chair this Board. From this position, the grace and provision of our powerful God can be clearly seen. I look forward to seeing you at the membership meeting. Yours in Christ’s service

President’s Message

I

must confess that when I began serving as President of Redeemer University College a year ago, I did not fully realize how powerfully God has been working to care for Redeemer. As I noted last year, several friends had reminded me that, as with the Old Testament Israelites, God goes before us to prepare the way for His people and kingdom. This year has gone by amazingly quickly in a whirlwind of meetings, strategic planning, assessing and reporting progress, pursuing new challenges and initiatives, and learning something new about Redeemer and its community every day. But even more amazing has been the way that God has been present in this whirlwind, going “before and behind” and blessing Redeemer in many wonderful ways. As Board Chair Enno Meijers has reported, 2010-11 has been an outstanding year for Redeemer. We have been blessed with record enrolment and record donations, we began implementation of our Strategic Plan, we had 222 graduates for a total of 3500 alumni, and we were able to realize balanced budgets along with a new salary grid and reduced over-all debt. In addition to these, many experiences stand out for me as highlights of the past year: • Staff working tirelessly to complete our KIP-supported office renovations in time for the beginning of the semester;

10

• • •

tudents appreciating the way Redeemer authentically connects S a vibrant Christian faith-life with academic learning that helps them grow as whole persons; Faculty sharing with the Board the great challenges they face in representing Christian scholarship in our predominantly secular context; Supporters demonstrating their strong commitment and ownership of Redeemer and its mission. As one supporter said to me, “we love Redeemer, and we will take care of it.”

All of these experiences have demonstrated to me the heart and core of Redeemer, its commitment to a Reformed Christian identity, and the way that it lives out its mission of providing Christian university education across the liberal arts and sciences from a Biblical, Christ-centred faith and worldview. As you can read elsewhere in this Annual Report, during 201011 we have taken many steps to strengthen and expand Redeemer’s educational mission and advance our strategic goals. The new faculty we have hired, the new programs we have begun and the new partnerships we have undertaken with community partners will all benefit Redeemer’s students and our ever-increasing community. We have also initiated plans to expand our recruitment of students across Canada and internationally, as well as outreach to alumni and potential new Redeemer members and supporters. And we have again developed balanced budgets and business plans to secure Redeemer’s long-term financial stewardship and viability. Across these efforts you will find the common themes of our strategic goals: a strong commitment to excellent university education from a Biblical, Christ-centred perspective; enhancing our international reputation and engagement; strengthening and expanding the Redeemer community, its impact on our larger context, and its long-term well-being; and intentionally providing a holistic learning community dedicated to the formation of our students as whole persons who are called to discipleship and service to God’s kingdom in all of life.

“We are deeply grateful for all who make this Christcentered education possible”

We are deeply grateful for all who make this Christ-centered education possible, including our faculty, staff, donors and supporting churches, and those who serve on our boards and in other volunteer roles. We thank all of these for their contributions. With confidence in God’s faithful and strong help, we anticipate that these efforts will bear fruit in exciting developments during the coming academic year in order to advance Redeemer’s mission, enrich our students’ education, and serve God’s kingdom.

ANNUAL REPORT

INSTITUTIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS • 915 FTE students were enrolled for the 2010-2011 academic year. • There were 222 graduates in May. • Three of our full-time faculty-members were inaugurated at the rank of full Professors: Dr. Deborah Bowen (Professor of English), Dr. James Vanderwoerd (Professor of Social Work), and Dr. Kevin Vander Meulen (Professor of Mathematics). • Teaching Development: Under the leadership of Chaplain Dr. Syd Hielema, close to half of our faculty have voluntarily been engaged in a project of spiritual formation, reflecting on how to make spiritual and devotional disciplines more integral to academic work and teaching in the classroom. • Teaching Quality: On national surveys, our students continued to rate very highly the quality of teaching they receive at Redeemer, our faculty members’ knowledge of their fields, the level of interaction between faculty and students, and the availability of faculty to students outside of class. • The past year has been a good year for research and research funding at Redeemer, although Redeemer is beginning to feel the impact experienced by all smaller universities in Canada of reduced federal research funding for smaller universities: • Redeemer faculty have published in the past year eight books, twelve chapters in books, ten peerreviewed academic articles, and some thirty popular non-peer-reviewed articles.

• Dr. Kevin Vander Meulen was awarded a $50,000 NSERC “Discovery Grant” over five years to carry out combinatorial and spectral analysis of matrix patterns. • The following faculty were awarded Internal Research or Instructional Development grants by Redeemer University College for a total of $ 20,837: Drs. Adam Barkman, Edward Berkelaar, Mark Bowald, Deborah Bowen, Darren Brouwer, Gary Chiang, Timothy Epp, Gene Haas, Sharon Klassen, Russell Kosits, James Payton, Jr., Derek Schuurman, Steve Sider, Paul Thorlakson, and James Vanderwoerd.

Library • With a new Library software system, the Library began an inventory of its collection for the first time in 15 years. This work will greatly enhance the accuracy of our online catalogue. Information Technology • We have initiated an IP-based phone system, meaning that staff phones are connected to their computers for easy access to phone extensions regardless of location. • The IT department also began using a thin client solution for student computers and for some staff prolonging the life of desktop computers and saving funds that can be used elsewhere. • We have begun upgrading both our web-page and our Datatel database.

13

REDEEMER UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

ANNUAL REPORT

14

Registrar’s Office • The Registrar’s Office welcomed two new staff members, Kim Lammers and Kristin Van Dyk. • On Course, a bi-monthly print newsletter for students, has been replaced with an electronic version. • We reviewed our evaluation process for applications and transfer equivalencies and made our processing time for transfer credits more efficient. We also have begun updating our degree audit and other Datatel software applications.

Continuing Education • Our Continuous Learning and Education At Redeemer (CLEAR) office launched an ambitious program of adult learning opportunities, supported by a strong advertising program in the Hamilton Spectator. Approximately 1150 participants attended the programs, many of whom were attending a program at Redeemer for the first time. A Youth Ministry Certificate program was successfully launched and the first participants started classes this summer. A study revealed that the annual Worship Conference meets the needs of the churches more effectively than a formal certificate program.

Athletics • Our Men’s Volleyball team won a silver medal, and also made great gains toward our holistic student development goals. We see evidence of strong character in our athletes regularly throughout the year and our efforts to make spiritual formation a part of our regular program have been well received. • We have appointed a professional Athletic Therapist to help our student-athletes, with the result that game preparation and recovery from training and competition are much improved. Our student-athletes are very grateful for the improved services and safety.

Our Continuing Teacher Education program certified two new Additional Qualification (AQ) courses and recertified five existing AQ courses. A decrease in new teacher positions in the province along with increased competition in the AQ market resulted in significantly lower AQ registrations. Two off-campus courses are planned in Ottawa and Windsor for the summer of 2012 and strong registrations continue in the Summer Institute.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

• Our coaching staff is strong and committed to making a big impact. We will look to them for help in attracting new student-athletes to our campus and in raising funds to enable us to deliver the quality programs that are expected at the university level. • We are looking forward to the completion of the soccer complex this summer. Planning for programming is well under way. Caell Huyer has been hired as Soccer Development & Campus Recreation Coordinator (75% FT) to enhance our recreational services as well as the quality of our soccer programming. • Additions to our programming for the 2011-2012 season will also focus on leadership development, sport psychology training sessions, and improved strength and conditioning programs. The Athletic Department is humbled to be able to serve our student-athletes as well as the communities of which we are a part in these many different ways. We pray that all of our efforts will bring glory to God in addition to helping to fulfill the great goals of Redeemer University College. Student Life • The tone on campus was positive this year. Student Life actively supports Redeemer’s mission by inviting and enabling students to develop their relationship with God and each other and to actively engage the world of which they are a part. The following summarizes the main ways that was accomplished this year. • Student Life contributed to our strategic goals for international engagement and excellence by participating in the international engagement group, by facilitating

Mosaic Club events and by advocating for off-campus work permits for our international students. An International Student Acculturation Advisory Committee was struck and began planning programming for the upcoming year. • Student Life contributed to our goal of cultivating a liberal arts and sciences program with a distinctive Reformed worldview by providing many volunteer and service-learning opportunities. The Amsterdam Missions Trip gave 13 Redeemer students a week of unique opportunities to learn about another culture and to offer some encouragement to those in missions in Amsterdam. • Student Life serves many parts of our goal of being a holistic learning community dedicated to developing and equipping our students as whole persons, including: • Housing: With 432 students placed in Redeemer residences in the fall, and an anticipated increase next year, addressing housing needs for 2011/12 and beyond is a priority. A Housing Working Group has begun exploring options to increase our residence capacity at Redeemer. • Increasing Counselling Services: Due to rising demands, we increased counseling service hours which enabled some coverage every day during the second semester. • Technology: We worked at using Datatel, databases, project management software, voice files, and doodle tracking to ensure holistic service delivery. • Services: Disability Services underwent review due to increased demand. Commuter Student services saw the creation of an advisory group. Educational Programming focused on alcohol and sexuality.

15

10 11

REDEEMER UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

ANNUAL REPORT

• The Student Life department has begun a comprehensive departmental review to strengthen its identity and goals, policies and procedures, and transparency and professional service. Financial Aid • Students qualified for just over $6 million in government student aid in 2010-11 and approximately $1.62 million of institutional scholarships, named awards and loans. We reviewed our financial aid program and provided recommendations to develop more need-based aid for students and to modify the allocation of some meritbased awards. During 2010-11, 5 new named awards were developed and awarded, and an additional 5 awards for 2011-12 were given to students for the first time. • Disbursement of OSAP loan funding will be through the usual loan documents to the students for 2011-12. MTCU is planning a major change for the following year when funding will be disbursed via direct deposit. Although this is a welcome development, we anticipate that there will be major challenges and delays in the first year.

16

Chaplaincy • The work of chaplaincy this past year at Redeemer has been shaped by two primary goals: continuing the ‘traditional’ daily tasks of chaplaincy and engaging in several pioneering ventures. These new ventures included: • Directing the faculty spiritual formation project. • Initiating new ministries for student small groups and athletes. • Leading discernment prayer for our succession review process. • Leading a team of 3 professors who each taught a section of INT 113, “Spiritual formation and university life” to first-year students. • Supervising Dr. Robb Powell, who came on board this year as a one-day-a week assistant chaplain. • The pioneering tasks did not take as much time as the traditional ones, but they did take considerably more emotional and spiritual energy, and they were also extremely gratifying. The testimonies that flow from these pioneering activities are filled with thanksgiving, peace, delighted surprise and joy. In addition, I’m thankful for a substantial grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship that funded several of these pioneering activities.

Co-op • This year, we successfully placed all the business students in placements and were able to initiate placements for the summer science co-op students. The program benefited from the addition of workshops to prepare students for the placement search process, work life, career development, and business etiquette. Application processes have been revised to ensure that students are planning for co-op within their program. The program is being managed with a 40% position, but growing the program beyond current registrations is difficult without additional staffing.

ADVANCEMENT Development • Donation results for 2010-11 were unprecedented. Contributions for the General Operating Budget exceeded the budgeted goal for a third straight year. The overall donation total for all categories surpassed $6.3 million. • Efforts to address Redeemer’s $30 million long-term debt continued to show positive results with over $2.5 million in gifts received specifically for debt reduction. • Federal and Provincial government infrastructure funding for renewal of the academic building and for the new seasonal soccer dome and fieldhouse complex started to come in while efforts to raise the necessary matching funds continued to be successful. • Redeemer alumni have been active in running an alumni/ student mentoring program and the Alumni Council has

been working to establish a more structured relationship with the University. Steps were also taken to strengthen relations with the grateful parents of current Redeemer students and graduates. • During Dr. Krygsman’s first year as President a series of welcome events at Redeemer and across Ontario gave supporters in many communities the opportunity to meet him. • Redeemer’s fifth annual golf tournament at Copetown Woods Golf Club attracted many newcomers and raised $55,000 for student support. Marketing & Recruitment • The quality of publications, advertisements and other promotional vehicles (Tangents, the Annual Report, the CLEAR booklet and the Viewbook) has been exceptional, and the consistent visual messaging in all our materials has strengthened the Redeemer brand. • The expansion and integration of multiple communication platforms (increased use of our website, media contacts and especially social media vehicles such as Twitter and Facebook) has enabled us to get our messages out to a wider and more diverse audience. • Redeemer benefitted from record enrolment during the year: 928 full-time equivalent students representing 9 Canadian provinces, 5 US states and 7 other countries as well as over 50 Christian denominations.

ADMINISTRATION & FINANCE Bookstore • We were pleased to appoint Sylvia van Wyngaarden as our new Bookstore Manager and Jennifer vanOosten as our new Assistant Bookstore Manager. • Several author-events were held, including one by Redeemer alumnus Sam Martin. We also participated in the Theo Plantinga Festschrift and book launch on January 21, 2011. Campus Services • Campus Services exceeded its conference revenue budget by $100,000 thanks to a number of large repeat conferences, like the annual convention of the Ontario Christian School Teachers’ Association with close to 1,000 Christian educators and exhibitors in attendance and the Golden Horseshoe Music Festival with over 2,500 students participating from local public and Catholic schools. • Campus Services also welcomed the Canada One Day Choir Festival and Foundation for two weeks in July 2010 consisting of over 350 people from the Netherlands who

18

enjoyed Redeemer hospitality while performing fund raising concerts in the Hamilton area. • Students living in residence now have online access to their R/uc Express and Market accounts which provide them with detailed information regarding their purchases so they can properly budget individual purchases and their dorms’ grocery spending. Child Care • Successful annual inspections by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and the Fire Department were made, and an increased wage subsidy was received from the City of Hamilton. • Child Care Centre staff served 30 families and 39 children with the extra help of a co-op student from Hamilton District Christian High School in Fall 2010 and Rehoboth Christian School in Winter 2011. Financial Services • A successful audit was achieved for 2010-11 with our auditors, KPMG.

Health and Safety • We continue to place a high priority on health and safety training for our employees, as well as regular monitoring and workplace inspections. Thankfully, no incidents of note occurred during the year. • Bill 168, an Act to Amend the Health and Safety Act regarding workplace harassment and violence, came into effect June 15, 2010. Programs to implement policies and employee training are being developed. Human Resources • We were successful in our application for maximum funding of $26,775 from Service Canada to support summer employment opportunities on campus for students. We also received wage subsidy funding in the amount of $6,374 through Mohawk College. • The Human Resources webpages continue to be developed, allowing employees greater access to information and improving communication. • In addition to casual and part-time hires, twelve full-time staff were hired to fill various vacancies as a result of normal staff turnover. • The HR Director, Jim Van Geest, was awarded a certificate for the Healthy Workplace Commuter Challenge from Smart Commute, City of Hamilton. Physical Plant • A number of projects were successfully completed under the Knowledge Infrastructure Program. All the original roof top units were replaced with high-efficiency units, improving

reliability and extending their life. A new computer science lab was constructed. The Executive Dining Hall was renovated, greatly increasing the dining capacity on campus. All the bathroom and change room fixtures in the academic building were converted to low volume fixtures, improving the University’s water conservation. • Construction is progressing well on the new soccer dome and artificial turf has been installed on the existing field. Environmental Stewardship • Redeemer University College, in partnership with Sodexo Canada, received the Eat Smart award of excellence from the City of Hamilton Public Health Services for exceptional standards in healthy food choices, food safety and supporting a smoke free Ontario. • The solar PV project design is complete. Installation of the 131 kW system will proceed over the summer with an anticipated fall start-up. This will help reduce Redeemer’s greenhouse gas emissions, ecological footprint, and increase the institution’s sustainability. Campus Development • Redeemer’s successful partnership with Starward Homes through Stonehenge Development Ltd in the single family condominium development at Kitty Murray Woods is being replicated to the southwest of campus with the completion of planning for the new Bungalows of Ancaster South, a condominium development of 100 units.
