Many of our students came here with the intention to just ‘give Redeemer doriel moulton, a try for a year or so,’ only to realize how close-knit we are as a community. That led to Associate vicepresident, marketing them developing very special relationships with other students, faculty and staff. As a result, they were unwilling to trade our close community for just being another face in the crowd, where the interest in and attention to their success would not even come close to what Redeemer offers. This culminated in the decision to stay and complete their degree, and the truth is, that’s what we want…we want you to come and to stay—through graduation, and if possible, beyond. going green! Redeemer is committed to modeling good stewardship. We have been working hard to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. Being ecologically sensitive and environmentally responsible changes the way we think about school policy, about our residences, about our campus, about our food service, and about our teaching practice. The recent announcement of government infrastructure funding will allow Redeemer to further reduce its carbon footprint by installing a 150 kW solar voltaic array on the roof of the academic building. The funding also opens opportunities for the installation of a roof-top weather station and of more energy efficient windows and plumbing fixtures. We are planting trees, reducing the use of harsh chemicals, replacing light bulbs and shower heads, and eliminating the use of styrofoam. We’re committed to recycling and composting programs throughout campus, to making our residences energy efficient, to developing sustainable practices in the classroom and the dorms, to purchasing fair-trade, locally produced organic products, and, perhaps, most importantly, we’re committed to helping you become well-informed, stewardly agents of change. There are plenty of ways, too, for you to get involved in environmental leadership on campus and in our communities. We’re looking forward to partnering with you in making Redeemer, and our world, a greener place.

Take advantage of Redeemer’s unique meal plan. Redeemer’s flexible meal plans are designed to help promote good stewardship, wise consumer choices, and environmentally friendly practices. Also, instructional cooking sessions are offered throughout the year to assist you in your culinary skills.

Your Degree You will explore relationships between faith, learning, and living at Redeemer. Redeemer University College offers 42 majors and 37 minors leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Education degree. Detailed descriptions of each degree program can be found on the following pages. Your Faith Because Redeemer is first and foremost a Christian university, every course you take will invite you to reflect on the implications of following God in all of life. Your University Program University College: An accredited undergraduate university that grants bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degrees. Liberal Arts and Science: The opportunity to specialize in a specific area of interest and build upon a solid foundation of courses from a wide range of subject areas. Bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Degree: A program of study, also known as an undergraduate degree, that normally takes four years of full-time study to complete. Your Degree Options Combined Honours: A double major at the honours level. Honours Major: The most intensive study of a specific subject area, consisting of 16-20 courses. An honours major is recommended for students considering graduate studies. Four-Year Major: An in-depth study of a subject area, usually consisting of 14-18 courses in a specific area. General Major: The study of a chosen area of specialization, usually consisting of 10-12 courses. Minor: A foundational study of a chosen discipline which complements your main area of study and consists of 6-7 courses. Service Area: Service areas provide opportunities to augment a major with an investigation of 2-4 courses.

Graduates have been successful in entering the work force, performing service, and in pursuing further education. Your courses Core: The focus on liberal arts and science is developed through participation in a range of core courses. These foundational classes provide a background and a context for everything else you will be learning. Within the core, you will have flexibility to choose courses which develop your gifts, inspire your imagination, and advance your calling. Concentration: In addition to a strong liberal arts and science core, you will choose a number of courses related to your field of interest. Referred to as your major and minor, concentration courses give you the opportunity to explore specific disciplines in depth. Electives: Courses that fall outside the core and concentration requirements. Electives give you the opportunity to study topics about which you are curious or passionate. Semester: An academic period of 12 weeks. There are 2 full semesters at Redeemer: Fall (September through December) and Winter (January through April). Selected courses are also offered in the summer. Courses last for the duration of a semester and usually require 3 hours of class per week. Credit: University courses are measured in credits. At Redeemer, a semester-long course is usually worth three credits.

Jazz »» Perform in regular student recitals Sinfonia Your music education can be extended through participation in Sinfonia, a chamber orchestra made up of Redeemer students and community musicians under the baton of Dr. Paul Thorlakson. You will have opportunities to audition for Sinfonia each fall. Redeemer’s orchestra is committed to exploring a wide variety of orchestral literature and exposure to its technical and expressive demands. The mission of the orchestra is to foster musical excellence as a function of the stewardship and awareness of God’s gifts to us. Redeemer Concert Choir As a student at Redeemer, you will have the opportunity to audition for the Redeemer Concert Choir, a choral ensemble of 40-45 voices conducted by Dr. Christiaan Teeuwsen. The Concert Choir performs repertoire spanning five centuries, showing great diversity from chant to twentieth century spirituals, and oratorios such as Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, and Elijah by Mendelssohn. This ensemble tours across Canada and the United States annually. They have recorded three CDs and have performed recently with Tafelmusik Orchestra, Orchestra London and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. redeemer jazz ensemble The Jazz Ensemble is a new and vibrant addition to the Redeemer music scene, led by Sean Meredith Jones. This ensemble provides you with experience and training in playing in a jazz combo, and allows for the practical application of historical and contemporary musical knowledge through the performance of jazz literature. Your Studies As you delve into psychological theories, you will gain insight into who you are, and you will learn to more fully appreciate the people around you. Your professors will guide you to see and to appreciate each individual as a whole person created in the image of God. Psychologists are interested in why people feel, behave and think as they do. Underlying these interests are fundamental assumptions about what it means to be human. As Christians engaged in the study of psychology, we believe that the highest level of human wellness is found in the context of a life devoted to God. All psychological study at Redeemer is guided by two assumptions: that we are a part of the natural world, influenced by natural, social and biological factors, and that we also possess self-awareness and are capable of making choices about our thoughts, feelings and actions. If you major in psychology, you will choose either the clinical track or the experimental track. Both tracks share some courses; however, if you are on the clinical track, you will have the opportunity to write your Honours Thesis – excellent preparation for graduate studies. If you are on the experimental track, you will have the option of completing an Independent Research Project – a hands-on alternative to the Honours Thesis requirement. Program Options Concurrent or Consecutive The Concurrent Bachelor of Education Program enables you to integrate two degrees into five years of study. Along with your Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, you will take the education courses and practica necessary to achieve a Bachelor of Education degree. Consecutive Education is a two-year program open to students who have already completed a Bachelor’s degree. Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate The P/J Level qualifies you to teach kindergarten through grade 6, while the J/I Level qualifies you to teach grades 4 through 10. If you wish to teach at the J/I level, you must have at least six term courses in one or more of the teaching subjects available. Experiential Learning Seminars and Professional Workshops Redeemer faculty and members of the broader school community provide workshops on many different professional topics, including special presentations by school boards and the Ontario College of Teachers. Inner-city Partnerships Redeemer education students may volunteer in the MVP innercity reading program or may choose a practica in an inner-city school. off campus studies There are a variety of opportunities for off campus study at Redeemer. These programs enable you to travel and to experience other parts of the world while fulfilling requirements towards your degree program. ABU-Oxford Program You can experience theatrical productions, museums, and historical sites in England while you study. Live with a British host in the welcoming country town in the picturesque Cotswolds, just outside Oxford. The program is available in your third or fourth year of studies at Redeemer. Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies The Environmental Studies major at Redeemer allows you to take two summer courses at the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies. You will engage in discussion on various topics, gain valuable field experience, and develop tools that recognize the importance of caring for your environment. The Institute offers programs in the Great Lakes Forest of Northern Michigan, in the Florida Everglades, in East Africa, and in South India. Canada Institute of Linguistics Prepare for effective cross-cultural communication and study language analysis leading to translation and literacy work. Creation Care Studies in Belize or new zealand You will encounter powerful opportunities to connect your Christian faith with complex and urgent global issues. In your 3rd or 4th year, you can study for four months in a learning-living community at Nabitunich — a collection of cottages in a garden setting on the edge of the rainforest, near the Mayan ruin of Xunantunich.

Netherlands Term Earn up to five courses in the Netherlands as part of a partnership with Dordt College (Sioux Center, Iowa). Learn about all things Dutch, from language and literature, to art and architecture. By studying overseas for a semester, you’ll explore culture, develop global perspective, and experience personal enrichment. Redeemer in France You have the unique opportunity of spending one or two semesters in Paris. Studying at the Sorbonne in Paris is a great opportunity for you to immerse yourself in French culture and to become comfortable with expressing yourself in French. As the language becomes second nature to you, you will also be studying courses in a variety of fields, including literature, history, social and economic geography, philosophy, and politics. Trinity Western–Laurentian Leadership Program This program, offered by Trinity Western University, gives you the opportunity to live and study in a unique heritage site in the heart of downtown Ottawa. With courses in Governmental Leadership, Public Affairs and Ethics, and Canadian Cultural Change, you will be taught by experts in the field who will show you how your faith can make an impact on public life. The focus of the program is two internships that will provide you with valuable concrete experience.

REDEEMER STUDENT FUND If you have exhausted all other sources of financial assistance, and still fall short of the funds you need to cover the costs at Redeemer, you can apply for a Redeemer Student Fund Loan. This loan includes a forgiveness factor, which means that up to 20% of the loan can be forgiven (to a maximum of 80%) for each year you complete as a full time student. GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE Government student assistance programs are designed to help you pay for your post-secondary education. Government-sponsored assistance is based upon financial need. Applications must be made directly to the appropriate government agency.

ON CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT Be part of the Redeemer team. On campus employment is a great way for you to gain experience, have fun, and earn some extra money. Students have opportunities to work in places like Campus Security, Athletics, Recruitment, and the Library. You must fill out a Student Employment Application Form and the Financial Aid Application in order to be eligible.
