Light the candle and explain that it is a sign and reminder of the Lord’s presence. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” and “where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (John 8:12 and 9:5; Matthew 18:20). Begin with this prayer: Heavenly Father, through the gift of your Son and the power of your Holy Spirit, we ask you to guide us in our faith journey. There are many people searching for a way to meet their spiritual needs and identify with a community of faith. People who feel the desire to know more about the Catholic Church and to explore its life may simply need a friendly invitation. Perhaps your spouse or a close friend is Catholic, or you saw or read something that prompted questions and inspired interest. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the Church’s way of extending an invitation.

No need to rush; it makes sense to go at your own pace and move thoughtfully through the biggest decisions of our lives. People rarely get married, buy a house, change careers, or move cities without giving such significant decisions appropriate time and consideration. Our initial interest leads to further exploration, helping us get to know our options and ourselves better. You might have felt this tug at your soul before and have only now chosen to act upon it.

Before moving forward with your lesson, ask if any inquirer is unfamiliar with the Bible. Briefly review its organization before you begin (see Q5: The Bible). Distinguish between the Old and New Testaments but emphasize the importance of each and their unity as the inspired word of God. The Old Testament, or Hebrew Scriptures, covers the beginning of salvation history within and through the Hebrews’ (or Israelites’) covenant relationship with God. The New Testament covers the fulfillment of salvation history in and through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection and includes teachings and letters from the early Christian Church.

How Long Does the RCIA Last?

• The Christian community is strengthened by the conversion of all people, who are created in God’s likeness and called to discipleship.

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.”

This is because we believe that:

• “Come, follow me” (Mark 10:21; Luke 18:22). “Follow me” is perhaps the simplest definition of our faith. The RCIA is like a winding road: hard to see far down, but revealed as you go. Fortunately, Jesus leads the way.

FAITHOFJOURNEY INQUIRY

Most processes are a series of weekly sessions with a team of catechists (religion teachers), sponsors, and fellow participants. Each session is a safe place to discuss the faith and explore questions about Catholicism or religion and spirituality in general. All questions are welcome and honored.

It depends. People come with their own unique stories and needs. While many classes begin in late summer or early fall and end at Pentecost, some schedules will vary or run year-round, allowing you to proceed at your own pace.

Is the RCIA New?

“I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

John 10:10

• Following Jesus makes people happier and more at peace, both here and in the life to come. We believe the Catholic Church has the fullest and most authentic understanding of Jesus.

Jesus doesn’t just want us to follow him into the faith blindly. He wants us to make the choice freely and with all the information we need to make a decision.

• “Come after me” (Matthew 4:19). These are some of the first words Jesus spoke during his ministry. He didn’t say, “Understand me” or, “Obey me.” He allowed people to consider his ways and to freely make up their minds.

• What questions do you have today?

Jesus Says, “Come!”

God invited Mary to be the mother of Jesus because Jesus couldn’t be born without her free and informed consent. Before giving her consent, Mary asked “How can this be?” (Luke 1:34). Like Mary, we all have free will to accept Jesus into our lives and to ask our questions. That’s how much God respects— and even expects—your honest questions.

This process began in the earliest years of the Church. In those first centuries, it was a challenge to convert to Christianity because the Roman Empire often persecuted those who didn’t follow its pagan religion. The Church wanted to make sure that candidates really knew what they were doing and were willing to stand up for their faith in a hostile environment. In the 1960s, the Church called for a return to this early model in order to provide Christian formation in the same gradual way people experience and enter any lasting and loving relationship.

• “Come, and you will see” (John 1:39). Jesus invites people to observe him to see if he accomplishes what he says. You will study Jesus closely in the RCIA.

If any inquirer is unfamiliar with the Bible, briefly review its organization and how to look up readings before you begin. Light the candle and explain that it is a sign and a reminder of the Lord’s presence. Ask for a volunteer to read aloud. Afterward, allow a moment of silence, and then welcome reactions to the words. Share a few words of encouragement and affirmation. Let the participants know that God is leading them and has been with them from the beginning. Before you go into the discussion of the lesson, ask participants to think about all the things that happened to bring them here to the RCIA.

• Think about a time when you heard about a great new movie. Maybe friends told you or you heard through social media that this was the mustsee movie of the year. You trust the reviews and make plans to go see it. But once the movie starts, you realize it takes a while for that great story to happen. You have to sit through every scene in order to see the really good parts. Great events often take time. Sometimes we have to be patient before we get to the good part!

• Ask participants to share what brought them to the RCIA. Share what brought you to the RCIA as a leader, too.

• How did you decide to start the RCIA?

• The RCIA has four periods.

• For today’s lesson, start with the activity at the end of the participant handout (see “Activity” section of this lesson plan for instructions). This will help the group get to know each other and enable participants to open up and participate in a lowpressure way as you get started.

Most RCIA programs involve a series of weekly sessions with a team of teachers, sponsors, and fellow candidates.

Jesus invites people to observe him closely over time to see if he accomplishes what he says he will. We will observe Jesus closely during these RCIA sessions.

This learning program began in the earliest years of the Church. Christians then knew it was hard to convert to Christianity because the Roman Empire persecuted Christians. The Church wanted to make sure that candidates really knew what they were getting into and that they were willing to stand up for their faith in a sometimes hostile pagan environment. In the mid-twentieth century, the Church decided to return to this process by offering solid Christian education in the same gradual manner that people enter any lasting and loving relationship.

The letters stand for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is the learning program for people to become initiated or enter the Catholic Church. It also includes rites, or rituals, usually done at Sunday Mass (see lesson C1).

These three words are the simplest definition of our faith. In fact, they are the first words Jesus spoke when he began his ministry. Notice he didn’t say, “Understand me” or even, “Believe in me.” He simply asked people to observe him closely and then freely choose on their own to follow in his footsteps.

Each session is a safe place for you to hear about our faith and to ask questions about Catholicism or faith in general. If the team leaders do not know the answer to a question, they will research it and get back to you with a response. All questions are welcomed and honored.

What Happens in the RCIA?

Is This a New Process?

Go Ahead and Ask: Mary questions God when she’s told she’s going to be the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:34). God answers because Jesus could not be born without her free and informed consent. That is how much God respects and even expects your honest questions.

Its main purpose is to help those who are interested in becoming Catholic do so or to help those who want to receive sacraments like Communion or confirmation that they missed earlier in life but would like to receive now. (More on the sacraments in later lessons.)

Jesus doesn’t just ask us to follow him into the faith blindly. He wants us to make the choice freely and with all the information we need to make a decision. We can see examples of this in Scripture:

• What do you think about the early Christians’ mission to make disciples?

“I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

Jesus asked those first Christians to “go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19). Christians made disciples because they believed that following Jesus would make others happier and more at peace. We believe the Catholic understanding of Jesus’ teachings is the fullest and most authentic understanding of Jesus. Your RCIA classes will be led by a catechist, someone who teaches the principles of the Christian religion to others.

Leader Meditation

Think about your own faith journey. Consider the many times God has protected and guided you. Now, consider the ones this same God has entrusted to your care. Imagine the trust God has in you. You have been given the opportunity to be their companion and guide on their faith journey. Pray for wisdom and courage. Rely on the Lord’s help.

Leader Preparation

• Identify the RCIA as rooted in early Christian history.

• Read the front sections of this Leader Guide. Publications on usccb.org may also help you explain the RCIA and the Catechism further.

• Gather copies of the New American Bible and the Catechism for each participant as well as any required materials. Enlist creative ways to supply prayer journals and other unique items.

Greet the children as they arrive. Check for supplies and immediate needs. Solicit questions or comments about the previous lesson and/or share new information and findings. Begin promptly.

If any of the children in your group are unfamiliar with the Bible, briefly review its organization and how to look up readings before you begin (you will probably have to do this multiple times before the children get familiar with how to do it). Light the candle and explain that it is a sign and a reminder of the Lord’s presence.

After reading the selection, ask the children what the Psalm made them think of as they were listening to it. Share a few words of encouragement and affirmation. Let the children know that God is leading them and has been with them from the beginning.

• List the four phases, or periods, of the RCIA.

• Describe the RCIA as a time to ask questions about the faith.

“The second stage is called catechumenate. You’ll learn about most of the major Catholic beliefs. You’ll also find someone to help you on your journey. That person is called a godparent if you haven’t been baptized. If you have, the person is a sponsor. This person can be a family member or a friend, but the person has to be a confirmed Catholic.”

“Yes and no,” said Mrs. Evans. “These classes are just for you. The process you’re going through is for kids your age, teenagers, and adults. It’s called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA for Lisashort.”frowned and said, “But we’re not adults.”

“What’s a rite?” Tanya asked.

Mr. Evans continued. “Mrs. Evans and I are your catechists. A catechist is someone who teaches you about religion using a book called a catechism. We’ll use a book called the Catechism of the Catholic Church since you’re here to learn about being Catholic.” Mr. Evans held up a huge book.

Will you be a catechumen or a candidate?

“Actually, you are to the Church. The Catholic Church says people are adults if they can think for themselves and tell right from wrong or good from bad. Then you can decide to be Catholic. It’s a big decision. That’s why we have these classes. They get you ready for the rite.”

“Initiation means to start something or what you go through to become part of a group,” Lisa answered.

“What does a sponsor or godparent do?” asked Tanya.“They’re like your personal guide. You can ask them questions or talk to them about being Catholic when you aren’t in class. They also make sure you take what we learn in class and use it every day.

Mr. Evans nodded and said, “It does. By the end of class you’ll all know exactly why you’re here. And what RCIA has to do with being Catholic.”

“You’ll all go through four stages. The first one is called inquiry. To inquire means to ask questions. In this stage you get to ask questions about God and being Catholic. But don’t worry! You can still have questions after inquiry.

Piensa en tu propia jornada de fe. Considera todas aquellas veces en las que Dios te ha protegido y guiado. Ahora, considera a todos aquellos a quienes Dios ha llevado a ponerse en tus manos. Imagina la confianza que Dios te tiene. Se te ha dado la oportunidad de ser compañero y guía de esas alamas en su jornada de fe. Pide sabiduría y valentía. Confía en el auxilio divino.

• Ubicar cada una de las cuatro fases del proceso del RICA.

• Lee el folleto correspondiente, la planeación de la clase, el pasaje de la Escritura y los números del Catecismo

• Consigue Biblias de Jerusalén versión latinoamericana y Catecismos para cada participante, así como el resto de los materiales enlistados antes bajo el título “Materiales y otras herramientas”. Haz una lista de maneras creativas en las que podrías presentar los manuales de oraciones y demás materiales (ver “Integrar a la comunidad parroquial”).

• Familiarízate con el vocabulario de esta lección: RICA, catequista, catecumenado, padrino, espónsor, Sacramentos de iniciación, mistagogia, escrutinios, catecismo. Podrás encontrar las definiciones en el glosario que se encuentra al final de esta guía.

Si se da el caso de que alguno de los estudiantes carezca de familiaridad con la Biblia, antes de empezar dedica un poco de tiempo a repasar su estructura y a explicar cómo encontrar las citas. Enciende la vela y explícales que es un signo y un recordatorio de la presencia del Señor.

Pide un voluntario para leer en voz alta. Deja unos momentos de silencio y escucha con atención las reflexiones que puedan hacer los participantes. Di alguna palabra de aliento y afirmación. Hazles saber a los participantes que es Dios quien los guía y quien ha estado con ellos desde el inicio. Antes de comenzar la clase, pídeles que piensen en todo aquello que al final los condujo al RICA.

• Lee las secciones que se encuentran al inicio de esta guía. El sitio web de la USCCB también te ayudará a explicar más adelante el RICA y el Catecismo.

Conforme va llegando la gente, recibe a cada uno, repitiéndole su nombre. Muéstrales a los participantes dónde se encuentran los materiales, los gafetes, los snacks y los baños. Dedica tiempo para que los integrantes del grupo se presenten. Una vez que les hayas dado los avisos e indicaciones iniciales, dales unos minutos para que hagan preguntas y respóndelas brevemente. • Da a los participantes una breve visión de lo que sucederá en las clases del RICA. Este repaso será más bien general y centrado en lo que los participantes encontrarán en las reuniones, más adelante tendrás tiempo de explicar cada periodo a detalle.

• Para la lección de hoy, comienza con la actividad que se encuentra al final de esta lección en el folleto del participante (encontrarás las instrucciones en la sección “Actividad” de esta lección). Esto ayudará a los integrantes del grupo a conocerse entre ellos y les permitirá abrirse y participar espontáneamente mientras tú empiezas la clase.

• Anima a los participantes a llevar un diario espiritual o un diario de oraciones mientras dure el RICA. Haz hincapié en que puede usarse no solo para responder a las preguntas de reflexión que surjan en clase, sino también para cualquier otra luz o pregunta sobre la fe que pueda surgirles.

Jesús dijo a sus seguidores “vayan, pues, y hagan discípulos a todas las gentes” (Mateo 28:19). Ninguna otra religión de la antigüedad buscó la conversión de los demás: ni los egipcios, ni los griegos ni los romanos. Solo los cristianos —no solo los católicos— todavía acogen e invitan a quien desee a unirse a ellos porque están convencidos de que:

RICA significa Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos. Es el proceso por el cual los adultos y niños mayores no bautizados son instruidos en las enseñanzas y prácticas del Catolicismo e introducidos en la Iglesia Católica. Consiste en diversos ritos, que por lo general tienen lugar en la Misa dominical. Algunas veces participan en el proceso cristianos bautizados adultos o católicos que se están preparando para recibir los sacramentos de la Confirmación y la Eucaristía.

No hay prisa; tiene sentido que vayamos a nuestro paso y que seamos cautelosos y prudentes ante las decisiones más importantes de nuestra vida. La gente rara vez se casa, compra una propiedad o cambia de carrera o de ciudad sin una debida reflexión. Nuestro interés inicial nos lleva a una ulterior investigación, la cual nos ayudan a conocer mejor nuestras opciones y a nosotros mismos. Es posible que hayas sentido esta inquietud antes y que solo hasta ahora has decidido

decisiones que han sido bien tomadas y se han hecho libremente.

• El RICA es un tiempo para hacer preguntas.

No es una coincidencia que estés leyendo estas páginas. Algo o alguien ha hecho que estés considerando el Catolicismo como una posibilidad para tu vida. Quizás tu esposo o tu esposa, o un amigo cercano es católico, o viste o leíste algo que hizo que te surgieran preguntas y nació en ti un interés por saber más. Incluso la misma enfermedad o la muerte pueden llevarnos a pensar en Dios.

¿Por qué los católicos invitan a otros a su fe?

Todas esas son buenas razones. También es algo bueno el que les hayas prestado atención a esas experiencias y sentimientos. Dios nos habla a través de los acontecimientos importantes de nuestra vida, a través de nuestros deseos e inclinaciones y a través de otras personas. Procura seguir prestando atención a todas las señales que aparezcan en tu vida y no dejes de buscar hasta que te hayas encontrado una respuesta que te satisfaga.

¿Qué significa RICA?

Dios invitó a María a ser la madre de Jesús porque Jesús no podía nacer sin su consentimiento libre e informado. Antes de dar su consentimiento, María preguntó “¿cómo será esto?” (Lucas 1:34). Como María, todos tenemos la libertad de aceptar a Jesús en nuestra vida y de hacer preguntas. Así es como Dios respeta —e incluso espera— tus preguntas sinceras.

¿Cuánto dura el RICA?

• Seguir a Jesús hace a la gente más feliz y le ayuda a estar en paz, tanto en esta vida como en la futura. Creemos que la Iglesia Católica tiene el conocimiento más auténtico y completo de Jesús.

• “ Ven y sígueme” (Marcos 10:21; Lucas 18:22).

“Síganme” es quizás la definición más sencilla de nuestra fe. El RICA es como un camino sinuoso: es difícil ver todo desde el principio, pero se revela conforme avanzas. Afortunadamente, Jesús es quien nos guía.

“Yo he venido para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia”.

El proceso es una serie de sesiones semanales con un equipo de catequistas (profesores de religión), animadores y otros participantes. Cada sesión es un lugar donde se puede hablar de la religión con libertad y examinar preguntas sobre el Catolicismo o la religión y la espiritualidad en general. Todas las respuestas son acogidas con respeto.

• “ Vengan y lo verán” (Juan 1:39).

• Jesús invita a la gente a verlo y a comprobar que cumple lo que promete. Tú vas a estudiar a Jesús de cerca en el RICA.

Depende. La gente viene con su propio pasado y necesidades. Mientras muchos comienzan al final del verano o al inicio del otoño y terminan en Pentecostés, algunos calendarios pueden variar y tomar todo un año para permitirte caminar a tu propio paso.

• “ Vengan conmigo” (Mateo 4:19). Estas son algunas de las primeras palabras que Jesús dijo en su ministerio. No dijo, “entiéndanme” u “obedézcanme”. Permitió a las personas que reflexionaran en sus palabras y que libremente sacaran sus conclusiones.

¿Qué sucede en el RICA?

• L a comunidad cristiana se fortalece con la conversión de todos los seres humanos, que han sido creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios y están llamados a ser discípulos de Jesús.

Jesús dice, “¡ven!”

Este proceso comenzó en los primeros años de la vida de la Iglesia. En aquellos primeros siglos, era todo un reto convertirse al Cristianismo porque el Imperio Romano a menudo perseguía a los que no seguían la religión pagana. La Iglesia quería asegurarse de que los candidatos sabían realmente lo que estaba haciendo y que estaban decididos a defender su fe en un ambiente hostil. En los años sesenta, la Iglesia quiso volver a este antiguo modelo para proporcionar formación cristiana de manera gradual respetando la forma en que la gente entra en cualquier relación de amor duradera.

• Consigue Biblias de Jerusalén versión latinoamericana y Catecismos para cada participante, así como el resto de los materiales enlistados antes bajo el título “Materiales y otras herramientas”. Haz una lista de maneras creativas en las que podrías presentar los manuales de oraciones y demás materiales (ver “Integrar a la comunidad parroquial”).

Objetivos

• Ver al RICA como el tiempo para hacer preguntas sobre la fe católica.

Si se da el caso de que alguno de los estudiantes carezca de familiaridad con la Biblia, antes de empezar dedica un poco de tiempo a repasar su estructura y a explicar cómo encontrar las citas. Enciende la vela y explícales que es un signo y un recordatorio de la presencia del Señor.

P1: Bienvenido al RICA

Conforme va llegando la gente, recibe a cada uno, repitiéndole su nombre. Muéstrales a los participantes dónde se encuentran los materiales, los gafetes, los snacks y los baños. Dedica tiempo para que los integrantes del grupo se presenten. Una vez que les hayas dado los avisos e indicaciones iniciales, dales unos minutos para que hagan preguntas y respóndelas brevemente. Inicia con agilidad.

Piensa en tu propia jornada de fe. Considera todas aquellas veces en las que Dios te ha protegido y guiado. Ahora, considera a todos aquellos a quienes Dios ha llevado a ponerse en tus manos. Imagina la confianza que Dios te tiene. Se te ha dado la oportunidad de ser compañero y guía de esas alamas en su jornada de fe. Pide sabiduría y valentía. Confía en el auxilio divino.

• Ubicar cada una de las cuatro fases del proceso del RICA.

• Describir los orígenes del RICA.

• Entrar en un clima de profunda reflexión espiritual.

• Lee el folleto correspondiente, la planeación de la clase, el pasaje de la Escritura y los números del Catecismo

• Lee las secciones que se encuentran al inicio de esta guía. El sitio web de la USCCB también te ayudará a explicar más adelante el RICA y el Catecismo

Lectura inicial

Pide un voluntario para leer en voz alta. Deja unos momentos de silencio y escucha con atención las reflexiones que puedan hacer los participantes. Di alguna palabra de aliento y afirmación. Hazles saber a los participantes que es Dios quien los guía y quien ha estado con ellos desde el inicio. Antes de comenzar la clase, pídeles que piensen en todo aquello que al final los condujo al RICA.

Bienvenida

• Pídeles que compartan con el grupo aquello que los trajo al RICA. Comparte tú también, en cuanto líder, lo que te llevó al RICA

• Preséntales el Catecismo. Explícales cómo usarlo y explícales que no hace falta leerlo de principio a fin.

• Anima a los participantes a llevar un diario espiritual o un diario de oraciones mientras dure el RICA. Haz hincapié en que puede usarse no solo para responder a las preguntas de reflexión que surjan en clase, sino también para cualquier otra luz o pregunta sobre la fe que pueda surgirles.

• Da a los participantes una breve visión de lo que sucederá en las clases del RICA. Este repaso será más bien general y centrado en lo que los participantes encontrarán en las reuniones, más adelante tendrás tiempo de explicar cada periodo a detalle.

• Para la lección de hoy, comienza con la actividad que se encuentra al final de esta lección en el folleto del participante (encontrarás las instrucciones en la sección “Actividad” de esta lección). Esto ayudará a los integrantes del grupo a conocerse entre ellos y les permitirá abrirse y participar espontáneamente mientras tú empiezas la clase.

• El RICA es un tiempo para hacer preguntas sobre la fe.

Conforme vayas recorriendo el RICA, irás entendiendo el camino de Jesucristo y tendrás oportunidad de hacer todas las preguntas sobre religión que tengas, tales como:

• ¿Quién es Jesús? ¿Es él el único camino a la salvación?

Los sentimientos pueden ser fuertes y maravillosos, sin embargo; no te gustaría una amistad que se basa solo en los impredecibles impulsos del sentimiento. Nuestras amistades son fuertes en la medida en que son fruto de decisiones bien ponderadas y libres por parte de ambos amigos. Estas son las relaciones que se vuelven sólidas y duraderas.

Jesús sabe cuánto queremos disfrutar la vida y por eso nos ofrece un camino para encontrar la verdadera felicidad, una que no depende ni de la edad ni de la cultura. Pero recorrer ese camino lleva tiempo.

El RICA se trata precisamente de esa felicidad duradera. Por ello vale la pena hacer todos los preparativos necesarios para poder alcanzarla.

• ¿De verdad existe Dios? ¿Por qué existo yo?

Elegir tus cursos de preparatoria o de la Universidad es una decisión que vale la pena hacer con calma. Lograr que las amistades sean duraderas toma incluso más tiempo. Pasar tiempo con los amigos implica compartir experiencias, sueños, miedos y fracasos. En el caso de los amigos, uno emprende un camino en el que sigue creciendo, aprendiendo y confiando en el otro. Lo mismo sucede con Jesús.

• El RICA tiene sus raíces en la historia naciente del Cristianismo.

Los católicos creemos que nuestra fe no es tanto un conjunto de creencias (¡aunque en parte lo es!), sino más bien una relación de amistad con nuestro Señor que comenzamos, desarrollamos y hacemos crecer.

• El RICA tiene cuatro fases.

• ¿Cuál es la forma en que normalmente tomas decisiones importantes?

• ¿Qué es la Iglesia Católica y por qué debo ser parte de ella?

Así que hoy empiezas el RICA. Tal vez estás aquí por cuenta propia, porque sientes el llamado de la Iglesia Católica. Quizá toda tu familia se encuentra haciendo el proceso del RICA. Quizá tus padres quieren que recibas los sacramentos de la Eucaristía o de la Confirmación. Todas estas son buenas razones. O quizás te está costando entender qué sentido tiene todo esto. Esto último también es bueno.

En breve:

Piensa en alguna ocasión en que oíste hablar de una buena película. Quizás se lo oíste a tus amigos o viste en las redes sociales que era una película que “tenías que ver” ese año. Les haces caso a las críticas y te organizas para poder verla. Sin embargo, cuando comienza la película, te das cuenta de que tienes que esperar un poco para que esa gran historia comience a tener sentido. Tienes que ver todas las escenas para poder apreciar las realmente buenas. Lo mismo sucede con los grandes acontecimientos: ¡tienes que esperar y ser paciente antes de llegar a lo bueno!

• ¿Cómo llegaste a tomar la decisión de empezar el RICA?

“Les he dicho esto para que mi gozo esté en ustedes y su gozo sea colmado”.

• ¿Qué piensas de la misión de los primeros cristianos de hacer discípulos?

Vayan y pregunten: María le hace varias preguntas a Dios cuando el ángel le anuncia que será la madre de Jesús (Lucas 1:34). Dios le responde que Jesús no habría nacido si ella no hubiera dado su consentimiento libre e informado. Dios respeta —y espera— nuestras preguntas sinceras.

Cada sesión es un lugar seguro para escuchar cosas sobre la fe y hacer preguntas sobre el Catolicismo o sobre la fe en general. Si los líderes no conocen la respuesta a alguna pregunta, se darán a la tarea de buscarla. Todas las preguntas son bien recibidas y serán tratadas con respeto.

• ¿Quiénes son algunos de los católicos que más admiras? ¿Qué admiras de ellos?

Las letras que conforman RICA significan Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos. Es el programa de formación para que las personas puedan iniciarse antes de formar parte de la Iglesia Católica. También incluye ritos o rituales, comúnmente llevados a cabo en la Misa dominical (ver lección C1).

¿Qué significa RICA?

Su finalidad principal es ayudar a aquellos que desean hacerse católicos o a ayudar a aquellos que ya lo son pero que desean recibir los sacramentos de la Comunión o la Confirmación porque no los pudieron recibir antes (hablaremos sobre estos Sacramentos más adelante).

La mayoría de los programas del RICA comprende una serie de sesiones semanales con un equipo de maestros, padrinos y otros candidatos.

Un día Jesús dijo a los primeros cristianos: “Vayan, pues, y hagan discípulos a todas las gentes…” (Mateo 28:19). Los cristianos hicieron discípulos porque creían que seguir a Jesús ayudaría a los demás a encontrar la felicidad y la paz. Nosotros creemos que la forma en que la Iglesia Católica conoce y explica a Jesús es la forma más plena y auténtica de conocerlo.

Jesús no nos pide que lo sigamos con una fe ciega. Quiere que tomemos una decisión libre, contando con toda la información necesaria para tomarla. De esto podemos ver muchos ejemplos en la Escritura:

Este programa de formación comenzó en los primeros años de la vida de la Iglesia. Los cristianos de aquel entonces sabían que era difícil convertirse al Cristianismo porque el Imperio Romano perseguía a los cristianos. La Iglesia quería asegurarse de que los candidatos supieran realmente a dónde entraban y de que estaban dispuestos a defender su fe en un ambiente pagano a veces hostil. A mediados del siglo XX, la Iglesia decidió retomar este proceso ofreciendo así una formación cristiana sólida. La formación se daba de manera gradual, como sucede en una relación de amor duradero entre dos personas.

Jesús invita a las personas a estar cerca de él por un tiempo para que vean si cumple lo que promete. Nosotros veremos a Jesús de cerca durante estas sesiones del RICA.

Esta expresión es la definición más simple de nuestra fe. De hecho, son las primeras palabras que Jesús dijo cuando comenzó su ministerio. Fíjate que no dijo, “entiéndanme” o incluso, “créanme”. Simplemente invitó a las personas a que lo vieran de cerca para que pudieran decidir por ellas mismas si querían seguirlo.

Jornada de fe para niños, Preguntas Guía del Maestro

Piensa en tu propia jornada de fe. Reflexiona sobre cuántas veces Dios te ha protegido y guiado. Ahora reflexiona sobre quienes ese mismo Dios ha confiado a tu cuidado. Piensa cuánta confianza tiene Dios en ti. Te ha sido concedida la oportunidad de ser su compañero y guía en su jornada de fe. Ruega por que te sean concedidos sabiduría y valor. Confía en la ayuda de Dios.

Objetivos

• Lee las secciones iniciales de esta Guía del Maestro. El sitio web de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos (USCCB) también puede ayudarte a explicar aún mejor el RICA y el Catecismo

Si alguno de los niños de tu grupo no está familiarizado con la Biblia, antes de comenzar explícale brevemente su organización y cómo buscar en ella las lecturas (probablemente tendrás que hacer esto muchas veces antes de que los niños se familiaricen con el modo de hacerlo). Enciende la vela y explica que se trata de un signo y un recordatorio de la presencia del DespuésSeñor. de leer la selección, pregunta a los niños en qué les hizo pensar el salmo mientras lo escuchaban. Comparte con ellos unas palabras de estímulo y reconocimiento. Hazles saber a los niños que Dios los está guiando y que siempre ha estado junto a ellos.

Saluda individualmente a cada niño según vayan llegando; cuando se presenten, repite sus nombres. Indícales dónde se encuentran los materiales, sus credenciales, los snacks y refrescos, y los servicios sanitarios. Dedica un momento para presentar el grupo. Después de darles las instrucciones iniciales y comunicarles los avisos necesarios, responde brevemente las preguntas que surjan. Comienza rápidamente.

• Adquiere copias de la New American Bible y del Catecismo para cada uno de los participantes, así como también cualesquiera otros materiales puedan ser necesarios. Ingéniate formas creativas para conseguir proporcionarles diarios de oración y otros artículos especiales.

“Hola”, respondieron tímidamente todos.

“Empecemos por conocernos”, dijo la señora Evans sonriendo “¿Quién quiere contarnos por qué está aquí?”

“¡Hola!” El señor y la señora Evans, sus maestros, los recibieron a la puerta.

¿Y tú qué serás?

“Algunos de ustedes fueron bautizados cuando eran bebés. Algunos se bautizarán al convertirse en católicos. Si vas a bautizarte, decimos que eres un catecúmeno o una catecúmena. Si ya estás bautizado como cristiano, diremos que eres un candidato”.

“Son como guías personales. Cuando uno no está en clases, puede hacerles preguntas o conversar con ellos de lo que significa ser católico. También comprueban si has entendido lo que se te enseñó en clases y si lo pones en práctica todos los días.

¿Catecúmeno o candidato?

“Todos ustedes pasarán por cuatro etapas. La primera se llama preguntas. Se llama así porque en esta etapa vas a hacer muchas preguntas acerca de Dios y de lo que significa ser católico. Pero no te preocupes, ¡después de esta etapa te quedarán preguntas por

“¡Bien!” continuó la señora Evans, “En estos momentos todos ustedes están pensando convertirse en católicos. Pero todos provienen de situaciones diferentes. Algunos ya estado en la iglesia. Algunos de ustedes fueron a una iglesia diferente.

¿Por qué estás hoy en el RICA?

“No”, el señor Evans reía. “¡Eso sería demasiado! Este curso es solo un comienzo”.

“¿Qué es un rito?” preguntó Tanya.

“¿Y qué es lo que hacen un espónsor y un padrino?” preguntó Tanya.

El señor Evans continuó, “La señora Evans y yo somos sus catequistas. Un catequista es una persona que da clases de religión usando un libro llamado catecismo. Nosotros vamos a usar un libro llamado el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica porque ustedes están aquí para aprender todo lo que tenga que ver con ser católico”. Dicho esto, el señor Evans mostró en alto un enorme libro.

“Un rito es una ceremonia religiosa muy importante. Este rito es cristiano. Eso significa que está relacionado con Jesucristo. En sus primeros tiempos, también la Iglesia iniciaba a los nuevos cristianos de una manera que se parecía muchísimo a esta. ¿Alguien sabe lo que es la iniciación?”

“Decimos que hay una iniciación cuando se empieza algo o cuando se hace algo para empezar a ser parte de un grupo”, respondió Lisa.

La Jornada de Fe para Niños, Discernimiento guía a los niños a lo largo de un periodo dedicado a mirarse por dentro y a la preparación para los sacramentos.
