John Carter: In Colour
In Colour
It is not as if I have never used colour before. My earliest work from the 1960s used colour quite significantly. It was based on commercial packaging, advertisements and other “Pop” sources. There, colour was a “given,” in that it was taken directly from the source material. Similarly, for a landscape painter, the blue sky or green of the trees are “given” colours, which can be imitated or interpreted as the artist wishes. With artistic starting points like these, there is no need to invent colours and there is nothing arbitrary in their selection. This is not the situation for an abstract artist, for whom colour must be as much a part of the invention of the work as its composition.
Two experiences form the background to the new works in this exhibition. The first was seeing an exhibition of Jeremy Moon and Philip King in London earlier in 2024. I knew Philip King, but I never met Jeremy Moon who sadly died at a relatively young age. This exhibition reminded me of the liveliness and creativity of the 60s – and particularly the use of vivid colour. The second, was my own exhibition at Champ Lacombe in France which covered my work from the 1960s to the 1980s. It was a surprise to see the use of powerful colours in my own earlier paintings. I found that it brought a different kind of energy and “presence” to the work even an
increased voltage! I realised this was something which could be reintroduced and in turn could form fresh possibilities of development.
For many years my work has been associated with greys and pale blues, but there have always been occasional forays into stronger colours. The technique I was using involved adding marble powder to a mixture of acrylic medium and pigment. This worked well with the lighter colours, but it was not so successful with the darker or more optically intense ones. The marble powder in the mix caused a sort of chalkiness which reduced the colour’s power. My major concern at that time though, was in creating tactile, tangible surfaces.
In the light of these recent experiences, I now want to reintroduce intense colour. To achieve this aim, I have begun to reduce the marble powder content in the paint mix and sometimes use none at all. This new approach allows the colours to appear in their full intensity.
The most recent works in the exhibition are evidence of this renewed interest. The difference can be seen in comparing them to my earlier ones where marble powder had been used.
