RED BANK PUBLIC LIBRARY / EISNER MEMORIAL LIBRARY CELEBRATES

75th

Anniversary & GREETS FUTURE WITH FOUNDATION LAUNCH, EVENTS, AND UPGRADES

Library L 75 YEARS WORTH CELEBRATING

R

by CORT SMITH

ed Bank’s local sanctuary—its bibliotheca— the Red Bank Public Library, opened on April 15, 1937, as the Eisner Memorial Library, in a converted Victorian at 84 West Front Street that dates back to 1856. That’s 75 years of library life worth celebrating, as are the Eisner family which gave it a home, and the community that embraces it. So the library is throwing a yearlong birthday party. In June, the library hosted a program presented by Jean Klerman titled “The Jewish Newport on the Jersey Shore: The HisThe current tory of the German Jews of Monmouth County,” one of whom building, 2012 was factory-owner Sigmund Eisner, who, with his wife, Bertha, bought the property at 84 West Front Street in 1906, renovatCathy Tobin ing it twice in subsequent years. After the death of Bertha in December 1936, greets visitors at the front desk the couple’s three sons—Monroe, Lester and Raymond (son, Victor had predeceased his mother)—deeded the property and house to the Borough of Red Bank as a permanent home for the once peripatetic Red Bank Free Public Library, which was created in 1878 as the Red Bank Mutual Library. They envisioned a repository of all things Red Bank where the community could come and experience a bit of Red Bank, as well as borrow books while enjoying the panoramic view of the Navesink. Before 1937, the library was housed in various locations throughout the borough. “One time there was a fire, and the only books that remained after were the twelve that had been checked out at the time,” notes the library’s director, Mary Faith Chmiel. A gala kick-off in April witnessed the grand reopening of the library’s unique New Jersey History Room. On display are historic items including old Red Bank postcards, atlases, reference books, and memorabilia of the Eisner factory on Bridge Avenue—at present, The Galleria Red Bank and, at one time, the largest manufacturer of uniforms in the U.S.—and the family’s strong connection to the municipality. There are also various ongoing displays such as the Deserted Allaire Village and Remembering Red Bank Fire Companies. New programs are in the works—all under the guidance of local-history librarian Elizabeth McDermott. According to Director Chmiel, one of the on-going challenges is keeping books and materials up to date. “The collection is core,” she explains. “It must be dynamic, contemporary, and have what people want. And we have so much to offer.” Efforts have paid off in the form of rising circulation statistics. Foot traffic—some 71,559 visitors were logged this past year—has increased as well. About eleven full and part-time employees oversee the 14,000 square foot facility. Over here are two preloaded Nooks and an iPad with apps that includes The New York Times. Over there are eight public computer terminals, four or five laptops, and over 100 periodicals. Downstairs, there are yoga classes, movie screenings, book club meetings, and a busy, updated children’s room. And there are the books: all 43,502 of them.

There are also various outreach programs, one for Red Bank’s Hispanic community— the library’s Spanish collection is expanding steadily—and another to increase the number of library cardholders. Anyone who lives, works, or pays taxes in town can be a library cardholder. Right now there are 4,000; the library seeks more. Money is another growth project. While salaries are modest (the highest paid employee earns less than $70,000), health insurance costs and related personnel expenses eat up almost $600,000 of the annual budget, leaving $127,000 for other operating expenses. The need, as Mary Faith explains, is to find additional sources of funding beyond that received from the borough, $741,000 in 2012. With this in mind, the library intends to create a foundation, and is presently seeking volunteers. A launch date is planned for March, to coincide with the final event of the Anniversary Celebration, something Mary Faith has dubbed as a sort of “Eisner extended-family reunion.” Separate from the foundation is The Friends of the Red Bank Public Library, established in 2009 under the guidance of Circulation Director Linda Hewitt. Its mission is to “support and enhance the library and its programs, to raise funds to support library services, and reach out to the community.” So far Friends has held four major book sales, and has become the sponsor of Red Bank’s annual town-wide yard sale. In July, as part of the 75th Anniversary celebration, the Friends presented a concert at Riverside Gardens—the first of what is expected to become an annual membership-drive event. A wine and cheese party opening the Friends annual book sale is slated for early November. “Over the past three years the non-profit has raised over $25,000.00,” reports Linda, noting that just $15 will make you a “friend.” As far as Mary Faith is concerned, the Internet notwithstanding, libraries such as the Eisner Memorial will always remain relevant. “They’re a foundation of our democracy,” she says, “but they’re also key in the sense that they provide an identity and a community and a core for the people who live in the area. This building’s been here since 1856, the extension from the mid-1960s. It was here before you, it’s going to be here after you. And it’s nice to be part of that continuum.” 9

STYLE THE INSIDE SCOOP ON EMILIA Maybe all you need to know about Emilia is how the shop got started—how, the night Jessy Krol gave her grandmother’s eulogy, she decided, on the spot, to open a dress shop named after the seamstress grandmother she loved and “wanted to be like her, every day.” For Jessy, that meant believing in yourself, taking risks, throwing off convention, and exposing a big heart and naturalborn talent for making women feel great about how they looked in clothes when they came to see her...just like her grandmother. At Emilia on Monmouth Street, every body type and budget are welcome. There are no fashion failures here. Jessy’s made sure that there’s a great look waiting for every woman who walks in her store, even if she doesn’t know how to find it on her own. Sometimes it means just making a good idea a little bit better. Clothing, shoes, accessories—for sure, Emilia is stocked with an eye for fashion—but not for what’s “in” but, rather, what styles and designers make a woman look and feel good at any age.

“A dress makes no sense unless it inspires men to want to take it off of you.” Francoise Sagan

“I shoot from the hip, not the Fall line.”

Jessy Krol

And speaking of hips, “There’s room in this dress for hips,“ she points out, holding up a sexy Dina Bar-el party dress. “Bernie Dexter was a pin-up model before she became a fashion designer,” she continues, showing off one of Dexter’s vintage-styled dresses. “Women can feel sexy in her clothes.” Emilia is not about playing it safe. But taking risks keeps Jessy up doing crazy research to find looks that work at different price points. Coats, jackets, dresses, skirts, shirts...items that build a wardrobe, never go out of style and, always, always make a body look good. “I love finding a dress that makes trouble happen,” says Jessy. Her grandmother would have loved it.

ART & HEART AT

Frame to Please by OLIVIA IANNONE A homey dining-room-size table made of smooth dark wood might not be the first thing you would expect to see upon entering a picture framing business, but in The Galleria’s Frame to Please, it makes for a warm welcome. The table embodies the attitude owners Mike Harper and Megan Prenderville have toward life, business, and community: that all three should blend seamlessly together. “You walk in a customer and you leave family,” is how Megan explains it. This inclusive view—combined with a keen sense of aesthetics and masterly framing skills—has earned many loyal customers, ranging from homeowners to corporate clients, local artists to international interior designers. Frame to Please has been a successful Red Bank business for more than a decade, but the move to The Galleria three years ago brought new clients and a convenient location near complementary stores that cater to home décor, such as Down to Basics and Tiled Interiors. “It’s a design center,” Megan said of The Galleria.

Riverview Medical Center, 2010

“When I completed my training in surgery and urology, I carefully researched many medical centers and found a group practice I wanted to join at Riverview. The primary care physicians and

exceptional; therefore I knew my patients would receive excellent care at this facility. As Chairman of the Department of Surgery, I have had the privilege of representing an outstanding group of physicians in the surgical specialties. My vision for this department is continued improvement by encouraging our surgeons to learn and adopt the latest surgical techniques, so that we may continue to provide outstanding care to our community.” John Rose, M.D. Chairman of Surgery Riverview Medical Center

N

estled on the banks of the beautiful Navesink River, Red Bank has been called the hippest town in New Jersey — the SoHo by the shore — mixing equal parts of Manhattan's trendy culture-and-cuisine district with a shopping experience likened to The Hamptons chic boutiques. Along with becoming a super-star destination, Red Bank has sparked a health care renaissance in the two river area that rivals much larger cities across the country and brings community members state-of-the-art health care offerings, many of them coming by way of Riverview Medical Center, the award-winning hospital located in the heart of downtown Red Bank. The quality of life in the two river area, coupled with the quality of care practiced at Riverview, has attraced physicians from some of the nation’s finest medical schools. They bring the best to our hometown in speciality areas such as pediatrics, cardiac services, oncology, neurosciences and women’s health and breast issues, with advancements that have positioned Riverview as a leader, fulfilling the Medical Center’s mission to provide exceptional care to area residents in an environment that is comfortable and close to home. In addition, the Childbirth Center at Riverview has set a new standard for families in the patient experience. In 2005, Riverview pioneered another regional advancement, becoming home to one of the most revolutionary radiosurgical technologies in the world: the CyberKnife® System, which offers a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors. Prior to the CyberKnife coming to Riverview, patients would have to travel upwards of an hour and a half for this advanced level of care. Riverview still stands as one of a limited number of medical facilities in the U.S. to host the CyberKnife System. When a patient visits Riverview, they have access to services offered throughout the five other hospitals within Meridian Health. Over the past fifteen years, Meridian has further developed its continuum of care to ensure patients receive the highest quality of care, from prevention and wellness to diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and home care services.

Riverview Hospital, circa 1929 18

For decades, Riverview Medical Center has been focused on creating a superior environment that will remain flexible to respond to future advances in health care, while attracting programs currently not available in the Monmouth County area. Riverview is committed to providing patients and their families with the finest health care experience, and is a lifelong community partner to those it serves.

I’m IMPORTANT As a Mom, I play many roles. I am the chauffeur, errand-runner, chef, and costume-maker to three daughters. Making sure my girls have everything they need leaves little time to take care of myself. But when it comes to getting my mammogram, I make it happen! I go to the Women’s Center at Riverview. Even though life as a mom on-the-go can get hectic, my children are everything to me, and I know I mean the world to them. So, with all the available technology and the knowledge that early detection is my best defense against breast cancer, why wouldn’t I make time for my annual mammogram? I am a mom. I am a leader. Q: A:

Do all people who are overweight develop type 2 diabetes?

Not all. Being overweight is a risk factor for developing diabetes, but family history, ethnicity, age, and body shape (apple or pear) are also risk factors that may cause a person to develop diabetes. There are also many people with type 2 diabetes who are not overweight. It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet, and exercise at least 30 minutes a day five times per week to lower your risk of developing the disease, especially if diabetes runs in your family. Losing as little as 10% of your body weight can drastically reduce your risk for developing diabetes.

Q: A:

Can I prevent colorectal cancer?

There are ways to lower your risk. Screening by colonoscopy can help prevent your chance of developing colorectal cancer. At colonoscopy, if a precancerous growth (called a polyp) is found, it can be removed during the colonoscopy. Understanding risk factors associated with the disease and maintaining a healthy lifestyle may also lower your risk. Diet, weight, and exercise are risk factors that can be controlled. Eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains, limiting the amount of high-fat and low-fiber foods, exercising regularly, and avoiding excessive alcohol are great ways to take control of your health.

Q: A:

What is the difference between varicose veins and spider veins?

Spider veins are a more mild and smaller type of varicose vein that often looks like a sunburst or a “spider web,” that is often red or blue in color. Varicose veins are larger and visible through the skin as blue or purple twists. Although neither condition is life threatening, symptoms may be painful especially for someone who spends a majority of their time standing. Varicose veins have a number of treatment options including many that are minimally invasive, including the VNUS Closure®.

Q:

Does a person with high cholesterol have symptoms?

A:

A person does not experience symptoms unless

persistently elevated cholesterol has progressed to

symptomatic cardiovascular disease (angina, heart attack, or stroke). Elevated cholesterol levels, specifically LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) is directly related to coronary artery disease. If elevated LDL cholesterol is detected, diet, exercise, and possibly medication is necessary to prevent the onset of clinically significant cardiovascular and cerebovascular disease.

Q:

Is there anything I can do to cope with hot flashes as a result of menopause?

A:

Each woman experiences menopause differently. Hot Flashes are experienced by many women during menopause but not by all women. Treatment of hot flashes if necessary is directed toward the specific symptoms that are present for each individual woman. The most effective treatment is estrogen; however there are several natural remedies that can be tried before. The natural remedies include dressing in layers; limiting spicy foods, caffeine and wine; increasing cardiovascular exercise; reducing stress levels; adopting a soy enriched diet; phytoestrogens ( plant estrogen) such as black cohosh; and Vit E Vitamin supplement which is prescribed by your physician.

Q: A:

Do you know your numbers?

Knowing your levels of cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, blood pressure, and BMI is important in your fight against heart disease. As recommended by the American Heart Association, a woman’s total cholesterol should be less than 200 mg/dL; LDL (“bad cholesterol”) levels should be less than 100 mg/dL; HDL (“good cholesterol”) levels should be 50 mg/dL or higher; triglycerides should be less than 150 mg/dL; blood pressure should be less than 120/80 mmHG; and BMI should be between 22 and 25. One of the best ways you can keep your numbers at a healthy level is through daily exercise at least 30 minutes a day. The most accurate way to learn and track your numbers is to have them regularly tested by your physician.

The best way to ensure success following surgery is to choose a program that provides exceptional clinical care with highly personal support. The most successful programs include counseling, nutrition advice, and exercise regimes, as well as a comprehensive team approach. Conduct research into different programs and attend physician lectures where you can learn not only about the surgery but about the entire program.

Q:

What is the difference between a screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram?

A:

Mammograms are low dose x-ray images of breasts. Screening mammography is performed to detect small cancers in women without any symptoms. Diagnostic mammography is performed for women who have symptoms such as lumps, nipple discharge, pain, or skin change, and to evaluate abnormalities found on screening mammograms. Screening mammography is recommended annually starting at age 40.

Women’s Health Reimagined HerSpace Breast Imaging Offers the Best Technology in An Inviting Atmosphere

DR. BETH DEUTCH DR. LORI GORMLEY by SARAH PAPPALARDO

Dr. Beth Deutch and Dr. Lori Gormley are two of New Jersey’s most experienced and dedicated breast imagers, with impressive training credentials from the country’s top medical schools and radiology residencies.

F

ounder and Medical Director Dr. Beth Deutch is proud to announce that HerSpace Breast Imaging Associates was awarded the ‘Breast Imaging Center of Excellence’ award by the American College of Radiology. This unique facility has won accolades due to its personal approach to breast imaging and its commitment to being at the forefront of technology in the early detection of breast cancer. Designed as an alternative to the annual hospital visit for routine mammography and breast imaging exams, HerSpace offers an inviting, spa-like atmosphere and a personalized experience. Their brand-new, “green” facility features 10,000 square-feet of soothing spaces, warm colors, music, and a oneof-a-kind art collection that makes HerSpace truly unique. There are a number of reasons that make HerSpace a cut above the traditional hospital setting; every part of your experience at HerSpace is thoughtfully and personally designed to get you more accurate, timely results and personalized attention in a setting unlike any other.

It Matters Who Reads Your Mammogram

Studies have shown that radiologists who specialize in breast imaging, e.g. have fellowship training, years of experience and concentration of practice, ultimately find more breast cancers than general radiologists. Finding breast cancer in a mammogram, ultrasound or MRI is not automatic. It involves pattern recognition that requires a broad mental database of imagery and feedback from numerous previous biopsies that comes with experience and focus, and it requires unwavering

HERSPACE

attention that is impossible in a multispecialty practice. We all recognize the value of specialists in many walks of life and do research to procure them for matters important to us. Dr. Beth Deutch and Dr. Lori Gormley are two of New Jersey’s most experienced and dedicated breast imagers, with impressive training credentials from the country’s top medical schools and radiology residencies.

Timing is Everything In most hospital-based mammography practices, women do not receive their results on the same day as their exam, but rather in a form letter mailed to them a week or two later. If there is a finding that requires additional workup, this is indicated in a form letter written in broad, impersonal language, and there is no one at the facility who will answer specific questions. At HerSpace, all studies are interpreted and all results communicated to you directly by the breast imager on the day of your appointment. If an abnormality requires a biopsy, it can usually be accomplished the same day, with results available within 24 to 48 hours. HerSpace reduces what can be weeks of anxiety into a single day.

Women are Not All Created Equally Mammography alone is not enough for a percentage of women. At HerSpace, all women who are identified as at-risk for breast cancer will automatically undergo additional risk assessment. Similarly, HerSpace gives special attention to women with dense breasts: fifty percent of women have dense or heterogeneously dense breasts, which means that at least half of their breast tissue is glandular or white on the mammogram, obscuring a percentage of breast cancers. Half of all breast cancers in women with dense breasts will not be seen on mammography. Mammography alone is not enough for densebreasted women, but few facilities in the area routinely offer ancillary ultrasound screening. HerSpace has offered screening breast ultrasound to its dense-breasted patients for a decade, which has increased the cancer detection rate in this population by 40 percent.

Technology Saves Lives HerSpace prides itself in being at the forefront of breast-imaging technology; it was the first breast-imaging facility to be fully digital and the first facility in Monmouth and Ocean Counties to offer Breast Specific Gamma Imaging, a molecular imaging study used for screening in dense-breasted and higher-risk women. HerSpace was also the first facility in our area to initiate a comprehensive screening breast ultrasound program for women with dense breasts. HerSpace is now one of the first facilities in New Jersey to offer digital Tomosynthesis, the latest mammography technology that allows the display of the breast in 1 mm thin sections, and will soon be the only facility in New Jersey to offer digital Tomosynthesis to all of its patients. HerSpace believes that its investment in technology is an investment in the health of its patients.

You Get What You Pay For State-of-the-art, personalized, timely care delivered by experts in a beautiful facility cannot be provided within the insurance paradigm. HerSpace participates with Medicare, which covers 100% of screening mammography, but does not accept private insurance. Women who value their care at HerSpace understand this; many use their out-of-network benefits, health insurance spending accounts or simply savings put aside just for this purpose. Because there is no better money spent than on one’s health.

Your Personal Best Vision CUSTOM ALL-LASER LASIK

DR. DAN GOLDBERG by CORT SMITH

A member of the elite team of doctors who performed clinical trials of LASIK in its early stages that led to FDA approval of LASIK, Dr. Goldberg has performed LASIK on patients worldwide

D

r. Daniel Goldberg is a boardcertified comprehensive refractive ophthalmologist—both a pioneer of LASIK surgery in the U.S. and an accomplished corneal surgeon. He has performed more than 10,000 laser eye surgeries in over 30 years, all with a very clear, sharp focus: the correction of vision so that people can see without glasses.

LASIK is the most frequently performed refractive procedure on the cornea, correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. It is the specialty of the Atlantic Laser Center—a division of Atlantic Eye Physicians founded in 1960—where Dr. Goldberg and his team are able to correct vision at different distances through the utilization of a presbyopic intraocular lens. For people who are either too near sighted for LASIK or cannot have it for other reasons, there is ICL, or intraocular lens implant surgery. For eye patients, these are life-changing options.

Personal Attention to Every Aspect of Your Care

Dr. Goldberg personally sees every patient considering surgery and follows up with regular patient check-ups for a year following surgery. Beyond the initial recommendation, he stays involved with all aspects of care—including the pre-operative exam and the post-operative care. “I couldn’t provide all the services that we have without being part of a great team,” he allows. In addition to Dr. Goldberg, the practice has five highly qualified doctors and more than 50 technical and support staff.

ATLANTIC LASER CENTER The Latest Technologies in the Most Expert, Experienced Hands Dr. Goldberg was one of the first physicians to perform laser surgery in New Jersey using technology in the LASIK procedure that revolutionized the field. Dr. Goldberg recently became the first New Jersey (and Monmouth County) eye surgeon to use the implantable contact lens (ICL)—a new technology to correct nearsightedness in individuals with extremely high prescriptions. To utilize these advanced procedures and equipment as they evolve, they must be in the hands of someone with incomparable knowledge and expertise, for there is little room for error. Dr. Goldberg’s surgical technique comes from his more than thirty years of experience. “Over the years we have brought leading-edge technologies to Monmouth County that had never been used here before,” Dr. Goldberg explains, “and, we’re still bringing in the best.”

Life-Changing Results Among the most important tasks a LASIK surgeon does is determining whether a patient qualifies for LASIK at all. Atlantic Laser Center has the latest equipment to make a highly-calibrated analysis of the cornea in order evalutate a patient’s candidacy for LASIK surgery. LASIK involves two steps. First, Dr. Goldberg uses IntraLase, a highly precise laser, to create a corneal flap. Many other refractivesurgeons use a microkeratome, or a thin razor blade. IntraLase is safer, more accurate, and consistently delivers better results. Then, to reshape the cornea, Dr. Goldberg uses the Allegretto WaveLight® laser, the most advanced technology platform available to refractive surgeons today. In the past, LASIK surgery simply corrected your vision based on your current glasses or contact lens prescription. All-laser Allegretto WaveLight® corrects your vision based on your eye’s unique attributes. Used successfully on hundreds of thousands of eyes, the results are nothing short of life changing.

One of the “Best Doctors in America”—Rights Here in Monmouth County Dr. Goldberg’s parents and brother were medical doctors, and, from an early age he knew he would be one as well. The man who was named by colleagues as one of the “Best Doctors in America” takes a bit of a renaissance approach to his role as a comprehensive refractive surgeon in that he is a teacher and clinical researcher, the latter in the fields of surgical monovision, which involves correcting one eye for distance and the other for reading, and in the development of refractive correction for presbyopia. Dr. Goldberg has a rare dual certification from both the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance—an independent, nonprofit, patient and consumer health organization that evaluates and verifies the quality of the surgeries provided by select refractive surgeons in the United States—and the American College of Eye Surgeons. He regularly speaks about LASIK surgery to audiences in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and around the country. But it was his own early health problem that put him in touch with the empathy that characterizes his practice. As a child, he had lost hearing in one ear. “I could relate to people who were having a problem with one of their sensory organs,” he explains. “What’s especially gratifying is that there are very few medical procedures like refractive surgery that a physician can perform, on any part of the human body, where you end up with better function than if you never had the Dr. Goldberg uses Allecondition to begin with. I’m lucky. I get gretto Wavelight® Laser to do that. And, I’m grateful that God technology— gave me a steady hand.” the most advanced and trusted LASIK surgery available today.

GOLD Making a Joyful Noise for Kids with Cancer

U

nless you have a child with cancer or know one, you might never know these facts. Take it from someone who does: Gerri Daneman of Little Silver. Fact: one in 320 kids gets cancer before the age of 18. Fact: more kids die of cancer than any other disease. Fact: Gerri’s daughter, Lilly, an athletic, bubbly 10 year old who hadn’t been sick in eight years, in May 2009 was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare, highly aggressive and malignant bone tumor. Then there’s this: it has been 30 years since a drug was developed specifically for pediatric cancer. “Is that amazing?” says Gerri. “There are no new drugs for my daughter, and only 3% of the federal funding goes to pediatric cancer research!” So Gerri set out to do something about it. In the process, she became the board vice president of the New Jersey-based Make Some Noise: Cure Kids Cancer Foundation—started by 11-year old Malcom Sutherland-Foggio, a kid with cancer—and a driving force behind local fundraising for pediatric cancer research and awareness efforts. It was a revelatory span of time, beginning in 2009, when Gerri realized she wasn’t alone— that there were other parents in Monmouth County with kids fighting cancer. She became fast friends with Little Silver residents Beth and Tim McLoone, whose son, Jack, had been diagnosed with leukemia at age nine. And there was Mari Kovach of Middletown, whose daughter, Rachel, was eleven when diagnosed. And Kelly Terry of Ocean Township whose daughter Mya, age ten, is once again battling cancer for the fourth time. “Without those three ladies,” Gerri says, “I wouldn’t be doing any of this.”

The Paint the Town Gold campaign in September—National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month—is a Make Some Noise effort. Businesses in participating town are free to raise funds in whatever manner they choose. The Foundation partnered with Monmouth Medical Center and its fund-raising arm, the Monmouth Medical Foundation, the gold flag sponsors. "If I receive chemo at age 50, my normal lifespan is another 20-25 years,”says Gerri, “but, if a child is diagnosed at age 3, that's a whole different ballgame. Even if the initial cancer is cured, the occurrence of a secondary cancer appearing into early adulthood—because of toxic non-specific treatment of pediatric cancer—is a real and frightening statistic. It’s a whole long bit of life on the bench.” Of course, not all kids end up on the bench. Lilly, in remission for some three years, swims, bikes, and plays rec basketball. Rachel, about one and a half years out, swims and has taken up golf. And Jack, a sophomore in high school, is looking forward to a career as a sportcaster.

As thousands also know, he backs up that easy style with a beyond-his-years musical wisdom and a guitar/vocal technique that’s wowed audiences variously characterized as blue-grass, Americana, blues, folk and alternative.

It’s a funny, musical celebration of the rivalry between Hanukkah and Christmas and an irresistible and affectionate reclaiming of the true meaning of the holidays created by two brilliant creative minds. It’s a unique blend: two parts Smothers Brothers, one part sincere goofiness of Laurel & Hardy, one part song and dance routines of Kelly & Kaye, and one part holiday variety show of Hope & Crosby.

FALL SEASON

W

hen Smithsonian Magazine placed Red Bank in the top three “20 Best Small Towns in America,” it was no accident that they represented their selection with the borough’s oldest and largest performing arts center. Both the historic Count Basie Theatre and the state-of-the-art Two River Theater have played a major role in the town’s “astonishing cultural and economic comeback”—and with the coming of autumn, a new stage season shines the spotlight not only on some first-rate performers, but on the people, businesses and civic institutions of Red Bank. A glance at the calendar of events reveals centuries-old classics side-by-side with world premieres; fun musicals rubbing shoulders with challenging drama. It all happens within Red Bank’s compact and crowd-pleasing “theater district,” with the co-starring venues joined by a stellar supporting cast of restaurants, galleries, shops and public places.

TWO RIVER THEATER With not one but two top-notch rooms at their disposal, artistic director John Dias and his Two River Theater Company team continue to make the TRTC brand one of the fastest growing and most exciting entities on the regional artscape. Coming off a summer that boasted major jazz and pop concert series and the original dance work “Bolero Red Bank,” the fall season steps out with voices that range from a Pulitzer-winning chronicler of modern urban life, to that talked-about upstart named Shakespeare. Ten years ago, Suzan-Lori Parks became the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama—and on the anniversary of TOPDOG/UNDERDOG, Dias and TRTC managing director Michael Hurst return to the work that they helped to develop in its New York premiere. A bitterly comic, bracingly adult tale of two brothers (named Lincoln and Booth), played out against a panorama of poverty, racism, domestic discord, damaged relationships and Three Card Monte, the Broadway hit opens the season on TRTC’s Rechnitz Theater mainstage, with the playwright herself as director. (SEPTEMBER 8-30) A deliberately paced tour of scenes that range from back-porch blues to the smokiest city-slicker lounge, the worldly-wise, hiply humorous songs of Ethan Lipton are nothing if not contemporary— and in his acclaimed show NO PLACE TO GO, the Brooklyn-based vocalist and playwright is joined by his guitar-bass-sax Orchestra in a “compassionate musical ode to America’s work force” from the perspective of a guy whose job has moved away to another planet. Obie Award winner (and TRTC Associate Artist) Leigh Silverman directs the intimately scaled presentation, hosted inside Two River’s black-box Marion Huber Theater space. (OCTOBER 6 – NOVEMBER 4)

In The Theater by Honore Daumier

Once more unto the breach—as Two River returns to the canon of William Shakespeare for a fresh stab at HENRY V, the bloody, romantic and inspiring history play that’s lost none of its relevance through the centuries. The portrait of a young heir to the throne—and his impassioned attempts to unite his troops and countrymen behind an ambitious war—features many of New York’s finest young Shakespearean actors. Rallying the troops is The Shakespeare Society’s Michael Sexton, artistic director of the nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering an appreciation of The Bard’s works through performance, commentary and education. (OCTOBER 20 – NOVEMBER 11)

COUNT BASIE THEATRE With new CEO Justine Robertson overseeing the show—and with expanded guest services, educational programs and VIP options that have placed the restored 1926 auditorium in the pantheon of regional arts venues—the Count Basie continues to provide a showcase for top-ticket touring talent, even as it honors a tradition of offering the area’s finest nonprofessional troupes a chance to strut their stuff. Having celebrated their 25th anniversary with a special event at the Basie early this year, Red Bank’s own Phoenix Productions continues their 2012 season of musical entertainments—surely among the biggest and best “community” stagings you’ll see anywhere—with a golden age perennial, and a relatively recent revival. Adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s classic “Pygmalion,” MY FAIR LADY marries the tale of the pompous professor and the Cockney flower girl to a spectacular Lerner and Loewe score that features “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” and “On the Street Where You Live,” with the end result hailed as “the perfect musical” in its 1956 premiere. (SEPTEMBER 14-16 and 21-23) The final show of the Premier season is traditionally a more unorthodox and experimental effort, and in RAGTIME, E.L. Doctorow’s sprawling novel of early 20th century America (and its 1981 film version) becomes a 1998 musical that boasts a book by edgy dramatist Terrence McNally. Balancing stories of a Harlem musician confronting entrenched racism, a struggling Eastern European immigrant, and a comfortable but conflicted middle-class family, the snapshot of a still-young country in transition features such cameo characters Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, and Henry Ford. (NOVEMBER 9-11 and 16-18)

A

s we approach our fifth anniversary, Atlantic Highlands Arts Council members are looking forward to an exciting autumn. We will be continuing successful programs like our Artists Lecture Series at the Paper Moon Puppet Theater, Live on the Deck, a monthly open mic at On The Deck Restaurant in the Municipal Harbor, and PaintOut, a social plein air painting group. We are initiating a new series of Living Room Concerts in smaller venues—including private homes—and are very excited about new office, exhibition, and meeting space donated by Keith Mitterman of Fineline's in Atlantic Highlands. The all-volunteer Arts Council has, from the beginning, been collaboration among many different parts of our community. We are the grateful recipients of funds raised by the non-profit Community Events Committee's Mayor's Ball and will receive funding from the Atlantic Highland Front Porch Club's October 13 ChiliFest. Our July film festival, FilmOneFest, brought 1500 film lovers to town with the support of more than 25 local businesses and organizations, many individual donors, hundreds of hours of volunteer time, and a grant from the Monmouth County Council on the Arts. The FilmOneFest Street Fair was co-sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and the FilmOneFest Awards banquet was hosted by the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society in the Strauss Mansion, where we will be holding several Living Room Concerts over the fall and winter.

MAKING GOOD CENTS The Foundation of Fair Haven

I

by OLIVIA IANNONE

n March, there was the Fair Haven Centennial Gala to kick off a yearlong celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the borough’s incorporation. May brought a Centennial concert, June an old-fashioned town-wide Centennial parade and picnic, July a Centennial regatta...and there’s more happy happenings to come: the Garden Party on the Navesink September 8th; an Oktoberfest October 6th; a lecture series in November; and a Holiday Open House in December. The Foundation of Fair Haven, a hardworking corps of volunteers, is in charge of it all with board members Susan Sorensen, Nicole Rice, Jim Banahan, Erin Gotch, Marie Noglows, Chris Brenner, Betsy Koch, Amanda Lynn, and Art Pavluk at the center of the action. According to its mission statement, the Foundation is “an independent, communitybased, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, which seeks to set an example of community involvement in and support for the needs of the Borough of Fair Haven.” Originated by former mayor Mike Halfacre in 2009, it is, today, an established and active part of the community’s planning. “The Foundation was created with the Centennial Celebration in mind,” says Foundation Board President and Councilperson, Susan Sorensen. “Such an event would not be possible without extensive fundraising, and the Foundation is able to do just that.” The result is an on-going celebration that is not a financial burden on the town budget and its residents. The successful fund-raising efforts have allowed the Foundation to add to the town coffers and help finance improvements that would not otherwise have been feasible. “Without the help and support of the Mayor, Town Council, and borough staff,” Sorensen adds, “none of this would be possible.” Although the Centennial Celebration has been the primary focus of the Foundation, its work has expanded. This year, the Centennial Celebration was the beneficiary of funds raised by the 4th Annual Tour de Fair Haven bike race in August. In addition to being a day of recreation and fun, the event also served to raise awareness for bike safety. In collaboration, the Foundation has started to collect money for bike lanes and “share the road” messages to be painted onto streets. “We’re trying to not only get community involvement, but also awareness,” said Sorensen. Whatever jobs the Foundation of Fair Haven elects to take on, its goal remains the same: improving conditions in life in the town of Fair Haven using community support rather than taxpayer dollars—and having fun while doing it. 42

The Ferguson Dental Care team includes (l-r): Edy, Laurie, Dr. Paul Ferguson, Dr. Dorothy Hoyt-Rehm, Karen and Samantha.

A Happy Place for Healthy Smiles by CJ ANSORGE

W

hen Ferguson Dental Care recently moved to new offices at 811 River Road, it was the beginning of the next chapter in the long, happy story of Dr. Paul Ferguson’s life and practice of family dentistry in Fair Haven. It began in 1999 when he bought the 479 River Road home/office and practice of Dr. Alfred Thompson who was retiring after more than thirty-five years as a dentist in the community. Dr. Dorothy Hoyt-Rehm, who had grown up in Fair Haven the daughter of an orthodontist and had joined Dr. Thompson in 1985, continued on with Ferguson Dental Care and is still with the practice. Today, Dr. Ferguson’s multi-generational practice includes some of those original patients (his oldest patient is 97—and yes, still has his own teeth), along with many new ones (the youngest is 3) who have found a life-time relationship worth keeping—even if it means traveling all the way from Santiago, Chile for an appointment, as one does who moved away. “A happy place for healthy smiles” is more than a slogan here. It is a mission to deliver personalized, compassionate care that starts each morning with a “staff huddle,” a special time set aside to discuss each patient that includes not only dental concerns, but also any issues or events occurring in their family like sick parents, children heading to college, or new grandchildren on the way. ”Our new patient experience includes time for us to talk with the patient, learn about them, and for them to learn about us,“ Dr. Ferguson explains. “Ours is a relationship-based practice, and that means a genuine concern for the overall well-being of every patient.” For Dr. Ferguson, building a happiness-centered practice is key. His move to new offices gave the chance to expand and modernize while providing a friendly, comfortable environment. The science and technology of his dentistry are state-of-the-art. But taking time to form long-term relationships is what builds genuine smiles that last for generations. Paul and his wife, Carolyn, live in Fair Haven. To them, the purchase and extensive renovation and beautification of the building at 811 River Road is more about community than real estate. At Ferguson Dental Care, a family dental practice means being one of the family, with close ties to the people you care for.

Ken Kruse

Kruse Control Take Two with Restaurateur Ken Kruse at The Galleria by CORT SMITH

K

en Kruse wears—and has worn—a lot of different hats. It’s not uncommon for an incorrigible entrepreneur. There’s the one as co-founder of a Red Bank-based Internet company; another as a forensic investigator for AT&T; and those as owner of two restaurants in The Galleria of Red Bank—though neither resembles a chef’s hat: Ken doesn’t cook. But what he does have is a love of the business that first lead the culinary neophyte to become a franchise owner of a Melting Pot fondue restaurant and learn from the ground up. He got his training at the company’s campus in Tampa, Florida and was ready to open The Melting Pot of Red Bank in 2004 when the 5,500 square foot space became available in The Galleria.

THE MELTING POT | Fondue Fun With fondue, you do you own cooking and, at The Melting Pot, you get to choose from a variety of entree cooking styles and dipping preferences—Coq au Vin (infused burgundy wine), Court Bouillon (seasoned vegetable broth); Mojo (Caribbean-inspired bouillon); and, European-style Bourguignonne (cholesterol-free canola oil with 0g tans-fat). Filet mignon, breast of duck, Portobello mushrooms, vegetable potstickers, cedar-plank salmon, cold-water lobster tail...pick your entree and begin dipping in the cooking pot right at your table. Fill the pot with melted cheese for the classic fondue experience...or melted chocolate for a decadent dessert. The Melting Pot mission is to make fondue a memorable four-course dining experience, a culinary adventure in a relaxed atmosphere with private tables, attentive service, fine wines and signature fondue courses. “There's just something about a fondue pot that brings people together, invites conversation, and is fun. It’s a great concept, and“ says Ken, the inveterate businessman, “it really doesn’t compete with anyone.”

Melting Pot

TASTE | Small-Plate Sharing When Ken opened Taste, his second restaurant in The Galleria, it shared more with The Melting Pot than ownership. “I wanted to do something different, while adhering to a similar theme,” explains Ken. The theme is small-plate sharing. This is a given at The Melting Pot, where a pot sits in middle of each table. Taste, in similar fashion, encourages sampling among friends. Salads, bruschettas, small bites, pizzettes, presses, sweet bites, tasters—a little bit of this: Wild Mushroom Bruschetta or Turkey & Gruyere Press...and a little bit of that: Po’Boy Slider or Coconut Shrimp Small Bite.

Both Taste and The Melting Pot showcase Galleria’s unique exposed industrial-style architecture, with Taste occupying approximately 3,000 square feet, seating 80 with a dozen seats outside. “I laugh when people say, ‘Why did you put those old-looking pillars in?’ And I say, ‘I didn’t, those are holding up the building,’” Ken relates.

THE MELTING POT OF RED BANK 2-10 Bridge Av/The Galleria 732.219.0090 meltingpot.com

Both restaurants draw a crowd. On the busiest nights, The Melting Pot, a destination spot and one for loyal locals, might see around 500 patrons; 1,200 over a weekend. Taste, more of a lively bar scene compared to Melting Pot’s relaxed vibe —the wine list does include over 400 labels, going up to $2,400 a bottle— has been known, on busy weekend nights, to close its doors by 11PM, the place being full.

TASTE 2-10 Bridge Av/The Galleria 732.219.9770 redbanktaste.com

As for life now as a busy restaurateur, Ken can only say: “It’s good! I’ve lasted eight years!”

No, December 21, 2012 is not really the end of the world. Centuries ago, the sophisticated calendaring systems of the Mayan civilization predicted that the “end of days” would come at the 2012 winter solstice— a forecast that lines up with Nostradamus’s thinking centuries later, as well as with the actual alignment of the Sun and the Earth with the center of our Milky Way. It’s no wonder that the doomsday buzz has been accelerating, but astrology has another think coming. by ALICE LOFFREDO

Following the Astrological Finger of God to the Winter Solstice

“Finger of God,” Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo

Chart for December 21, 2012 yod.

O

n December 21, 2012—the day of the winter solstice this year—as the Sun moves into the sign of Capricorn and aligns with the Earth in the exact center of our Milky Way galaxy, the powerful planets Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto will form an intense, highly karmic astrological configuration known as a yod or “finger of God.”

The yod is a relatively rare, karmically important planetary configuration. Three planets form a tall, skinny, equal-sided, narrow-based triangle. The energies of the base planets flow easily between one another, but, because of the signs of the planets in the configuration, each of the base planets is extremely uncomfortable being connected to the energies of the planet at the top of the triangle or apex. Within the yod are powerful, positive energies that are ready to be manifested in the world, but they are boxed in by the tensions of the planetary connections. The goal is to activate the highest qualities of the apex planet, using the energies of the planets at the base, a challenging task because of the complexity of the energetic mix. With inspirational, optimistic Jupiter, the planet of philosophy and the quest for meaning, at the apex of the pattern, the December 21, 2012 yod can represent a turning point in the positive unfolding of our collective worldwide destiny. Jupiter expands our consciousness and broadens our vision of how the world can be at its best. Saturn, the karmic teacher that helps create and guard strong, secure foundations, and Pluto, with its powerful transformative and healing qualities, form the base of the configuration, energies can be marshaled to actualize Jupiter’s vision of a better world. However, yods are restless and uncomfortable by nature. The configuration contains great power that is tightly constrained, and it must be carefully managed so that it doesn’t either explode uncontrollably, or go into lockdown mode, where all its potential is wasted in the effort to control its energies. It’s very tempting to “sit tight” and not rock the boat under the energies of a yod, and that’s precisely not what we should do. Nor are we advised to act impulsively or rashly, creating a self-defeating illusion of positive movement by our ill-considered actions. But, if we each slow down and go within ourselves to capture our own piece of the Jupiter vision, and then use our own Saturn and Pluto energies in the effort to build and transform, the potential of this powerful configuration can be released collectively in a measured, productive, and even miracle-producing way. December 21, 2012 can mark the opening of a doorway that leads our world to take a leap to a higher level of spiritual consciousness and, hopefully, usher in a new era of peace. Keep the faith. Stay the course. The best is yet to be. 56
