WALK THIS WAY Before you walk down the aisle, you’ll definitely want to take a walk around Red Bank on Sunday, March 11 as Red Bank RiverCenter hosts the eighth annual Red Bank Wedding Walk. The award-winning, fun and free happening has become a destination experience and essential planning guide for brides, grooms, partners, attendants, and families preparing for their special day. The Wedding Walk begins with check-in and continental breakfast between 10am and 1pm at The Oyster Point Hotel, a co-presenting-sponsor of the event along with the Molly Pitcher Inn. Armed with a free tote bag, map and “passport,” attendees head out on a self-guided tour of Red Bank’s many wedding-related businesses. Trolleys and limos, courtesy of Great American Trolley, Long Branch Trolley and Arrow Limousine, chauffeur attendees in style throughout town, with helpful Wedding Walk ambassadors from Barbizon stationed at shuttle stops. “This is an ideal way to see all the wedding businesses in their actual locations—not just in a ballroom,” says Amanda Lynn, Red Bank RiverCenter Program Manager. “Red Bank has everything start-to-finish for a wedding, from save-the-date announcements to the guest favors.” In one information-packed and very entertaining afternoon, attendees can check out numerous restaurant venues for showers, rehearsal dinners and receptions; try on wedding, bridesmaid, and mother-of-the-bride dresses; select favors and sample cakes; stop at hair, nail and skincare salons; meet dee-jays, photographers, florists, event planners, and other serviceproviders; choose home furnishings for a first home or apartment; and much more. Still need the rings? You can find those, too. At 3 pm, the festivities conclude with a reception celebration at the elegant, waterfront Molly Pitcher Inn. While enjoying tasty bites and lively music, attendees turn in their passports (stamped at each of the participating businesses they visited), to be eligible for fabulous door prizes and grandprizes donated by Red Bank businesses.

Leigh Ann Brienza Bridges of Astoria, New York, says last year’s Wedding Walk was invaluable to planning her June 16, 2017 wedding to Taylor Bridges. She found her floral designer (Craig Kiely and Darryn Murphy Designs) and favors (mini bottles of flavored olive oils from Carter & Cavero) during the Wedding Walk. And, although the couple had previously booked the Molly Pitcher Inn as their venue, the event helped Leigh Ann fine-tune appetizer selections and gain a better sense of the hotel’s ceremony and reception spaces. Sugarush, too, was already locked in for the wedding cake and groom’s cookie cake, but Leigh Ann says, “Having the opportunity to taste samples again, confirmed we made the right choice!” Leigh Ann adds that exploring Red Bank during the walk also helped the couple create a list of recommended local restaurants and shops for out-of-town guests visiting for their wedding weekend. “Participating in Wedding Walk was a great bonding experience with my mom (Ann Marie Brienza of Ocean Township),” says Leigh Ann. “The whole event got me very excited for my wedding.” 10

Angel’s Gowns—A MAGICAL KIND
OF PLACE WHERE BRIDES CAN COME FOR DRESSES AND LEAVE FEELING LIKE PRINCESSES. From the outside, the charming, Tudor-style building at 17 Monmouth Street in Red Bank is reminiscent of a fairy cottage. Inside, one might imagine it as the dwelling place of a princess, festooned, as it is, with luminous fabrics and sparkling beads. In fact, it is the home of Angel’s Gowns. Shop owner, Angela Paganoni,a fashion designer and clothing manufacturer for 32 years in her native Mexico, opened Angel’s Gowns four years ago and named the business in honor of her daughter Claudia, who, Angela believes, earned her angel wings after passing away at age 16. In her shop, the grandmother of three, and mother of Lily Avery, owner of Coba Yoga in Little Silver, offers brides-to-be a wide selection of wedding gowns from designers like Christina Wu, Mon Cheri and Mary’s Bridal, in styles to suit every taste from traditional and timeless, to modern and sophisticated, to romantic and beachy. Lining the walls of the tidy shop are more special-occasion dresses for other ages and stages of a girl’s life. Angela has a huge selection of christening gowns (plus suits and rompers for baby boys), First Holy Communion dresses and veils, as well as Bat Mitzvah, Sweet Sixteen, Prom dresses and Quinceanera dressesworn by girls of Latin-American heritage to celebrate their fifteenth birthdays.

But, where Angela really shines is alterations. Beyond ensuring a perfect fit, she can customize a dress by adding lace, beading, sleeves or other embellishments, or even changing parts of the design. The skilled designer can even transform a family wedding gown or heirloom dress into an extraordinary, custom christening gown or communion dress for the next generation. “I love to help make a dress truly unique and personal for my customers so it is exactly what they want,” she says. “I am an artist with alterations and can hide what you don’t like to make you look better, but my alterations are still very affordable.” Angela wraps all her customers in genuine warmth and kindness, and her calming presence takes any stress out of the process. “I treat my customers like my children and grandchildren,” she says. “They know I love them.”

enna Rocca and Louis Castano met four years ago at a middle school performance of Pirates of Pezance;
Louis was playing drums in the pit and caught Jenna’s eye in the audience, where she sat watching as Associate Director of Marketing for the Two River Theater (TRT). They started dating six months later and share a passion for the arts. On November 17, 2017—the day Louis proposed to Jenna—the stage had been set for a most romantic “I do.” Inspired by the marriage theme of The Importance of Being Earnest, Louis chose opening night of the Two River Theater’s production of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy for the performance of his lifetime. In the afternoon, the Two River staff cleared the Rechnitz Stage, where The Importance of Being Earnest would be opening that night, and contrived a reason for Jenna to go into the empty theater. To her shock, Louis walked out to center stage on the dreamlike garden set designed by Charlie Corcoran, got down on one knee and proposed. Music— I Choose You by Sara Bareilles—started playing on the sound system, and a photographer was in the wings, ready to

hen Valerie Browning returned to her Highlands home, after being displaced for eight months due to Hurricane Sandy, she found a community still struggling in the storm’s wake. “It was such a sad time, and I thought starting a support group might help,” she recalls. The owner of the local coffee shop, Water Witch Coffee, offered to host the meetings there. Before long, the owner made another offer: Was Valerie interested in buying the place? “Was I interested?!” laughs Valerie. “Owning a coffee house was my dream since I was 15 years old. I was obsessed with coffee houses as a teenager. This was so cool!” The place was always popular, but under Valerie’s helm over the past three years, it has grown to become a community magnet, attracting a host of regulars who are welcomed like family. Valerie says a group of retired gentlemen are usually the first to walk through the door every day at 6:30 a.m., claiming a table to discuss the events of the day. Ferry commuters and locals pop in throughout the morning on their way to work, while the “afternoon crowd” lingers over lattes and fresh-baked pastries, or enjoys a smoothie or other selection from the menu of inventive egg dishes, crepes, Panini sandwiches, homemade soups, and daily specials. But, clearly, the buzz surrounding Water Witch Coffee is not simply from the caffeine alone. Valerie, who has a degree in music history and theory from Fordham University, has incorporated her love of the arts into the space and turned it into a lively hub of music and art. The café’s monthly events calendar is jam-packed with jam sessions, open-mic nights, and art exhibits. Through the front door between the awning-covered windows, is a homey vibe and thrift-store-chic esthetic, with mismatched tables and chairs on a black-andwhite checkered floor. Corrugated tin panels contrast with dark-painted walls, nearly every inch of which is covered with an eclectic collection of art and artifacts like old license plates, signs from Highlands’ landmarks like Doris and Ed’s and the Clam Hut, and original paintings from the art exhibit that rotates every couple of months. Valerie personally curates the gallery, showcasing artists from around the country, and the works are all available for sale. A recent exhibit featured an artist from New Mexico, with southwestern-inspired paintings of animals, skulls and desert images dramatically painted in bold colors. Toward the rear of the cafe, a living-room-like space is home to a piano, ready for playing.

Every Wednesday night, Water Witch Coffee stays open late for its Open-Mic Jam. Talented singers take their turn at the mic, backed by musicians who bring their own instruments to collaborate on impromptu concerts that rival any on professional stages. Fans also pack the house for the café’s Sunday Jam Sessions, where local musicians, who share the love of making music, meet up and rock the house. The rotating Sunday schedule includes blues jams, New Orleans Style jazz and blues jams, and The Water Witch Jazz Band, a pianist-drummer duo that formed out of playing in other Water Witch jam sessions. Every second Sunday of the month, a group of veteran Irish musicians from as far as New York City, gather to play in a toe-tapping, hand-clapping jam session of traditional Irish tunes. Valerie also peppers the events-calendar with performances by groups and solo artists, including both seasoned and undiscovered talent, playing original and cover music in a wide range of genres. “We had a musician from the Blues Hall of Fame perform one Friday night this past fall,” says Valerie. “The place was packed.” Its “Merry Witchmas” event included a strolling band of musicians and carolers serenading the neighborhoods of Highlands, followed by a spirited open-mic jam back at the Water Witch. A talk, reading and book-signing by an author is in the works for this year. “It’s amazing to see how the arts bring people together from all over,” Valerie points out. “Water Witch Coffee is becoming a destination for wonderful music and art.” A mom of two young daughters, Valerie credits her employees with helping to run the business and create its fun and welcoming vibe, while ensuring her time to take her daughters to and from school. “I have the best staff ever. They are like family,” she says. “I call them the ‘Water Witch Caretakers.’ They would never call out sick, because they know what the place means to our customers.” According to many, it means a lot. Some, in fact, credit Water Witch Coffee with being instrumental in the post-Sandy recovery and healing of Highlands. “I think we have created a real sense of community here that feels safe and welcoming,” Valerie says. “People have said to me, ‘You’re helping to turn the town around.’ But, I just want to spread happiness.” WATER WITCH COFFEE | 67 WATERWITCH AVE, HIGHLANDS | WATERWITCHCOFFEE.COM

A
heart attack can strike out of nowhere. Each year, one in three deaths is caused by cardiovascular disease making it the number one cause of death in the United States. Acting quickly is crucial to a patient’s outcome, which is why it’s important for individuals to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. The most classic sign of a heart attack is chest pain, which can occur in many forms, including uncomfortable pressure, a squeezing sensation, a feeling of fullness, or pain in the center of your chest.
Shortness of breath is another common heart attack indicator, as are palpitations. Feelings of anxiety or impending doom can also be a symptom of heart attack. “It’s important to note that men and women often experience different heart attack symptoms,” says Dr. Vlahos. “Chest pain or discomfort is the most common sign for both, however women are more likely than men to experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.”

Women also tend to minimize symptoms, waiting an average of 54 hours before seeking treatment compared to men who wait about 16, which is one of the reasons that women are two times as likely to die when a heart attack strikes under the age of 50.

BROOKDAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE: DISCOVERING A WOR

he Center for the Visual Arts (CVA) building at Brookdale Community College, located at the north end of the Lincroft campus, has three floors dedicated to nurturing artists of all ages from all over Monmouth County in many varied disciplines. There are studios dedicated to Metals and Jewelry, Ceramics, Digital Animation, Oil Painting, Drawing, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Architecture.
On any given day, a tour through the building could reveal a stunning variety of artworks on display in the corridors or in the classrooms. Art incubated on hard drives springs to life on double screens in dedicated classrooms within Brookdale’s Digital Animation Studios. Images from a Digital Sculpture class can leave one wondering where the computer image ends and reality begins. Students in the BCC Interior Design Program draw by hand and then load those drawings into Autocad from which they are printed out and cut using a laser cutter.
Brookdale Fine Arts Student Ashley Prior, who plans to graduate in May, says of her experiences at work in Brookdale’s ceramics studio, “Shaping clay gives me a sense of order and balance in all my pieces. As my hands are moving the clay, I am thinking of nothing but what it feels like. No thoughts of what I have to do today or tomorrow are on my mind. Finding pottery was one of the best things that has happened to me,” she says. “The second I started using clay, my creativity sprouted.” Kathleen Eovino, a continuing education student from Manasquan, has been using the jewelry studio at Brookdale for 20 years. "Jewelry is my art form," she says. "I express myself in metal, not pencil or charcoal." Eovino appreciates the camaraderie in the CVA building. Brookdale staff has opportunities to showcase their own creativity in the CVA Building. Following Hurricane Sandy, technical staff member Kevin R. Burkitt’s took more than 100 photographic images in the dark of night, between the hours of 10pm–4am, in small towns from Sandy Hook to Manasquan. A few months before the fifth anniversary of the storm, Burkitt shared 50 of those images, printing them with the help of a $500 minigrant awarded by Monmouth Arts matched with funds from Brookdale Foundation’s Visiting Artist Program. The resulting show, entitled “91 days; countless nights,” drew record crowds to the CVA Gallery.”

t wasn’t so long ago, when Marilyn Schlossbach bid goodnight to the staff at her oceanfront Langosta Lounge, and retired to the place she called home at the time: a large cardboard box, smack-dab on the heavily trafficked Asbury Park boardwalk.
with “an all new customer base” in the post-Sandy era—with its flagship berths at Asbury Park’s Second Avenue Pavilion joined by bands-and-beers boardwalk bar Asbury Park Yacht Club (the adjacent retail shop Lightly Salted Surf Mercado closed at the end of 2017).
The arrangement wasn’t so much testament to the vagaries of the restaurant business, as it was a (highly visible) commitment to the homeless youth services network Covenant House, and a planned local shelter for its (often invisible) clientele.
Up in Rumson, the French-American bistro Russell & Bette’s— owned in part by Marilyn and Richard—continues to stake a flavorful new claim to the landmark property long occupied by What’s Your Beef.
“It was very enlightening, putting yourself in the position of having no control over your life,” explains the self-described “chef, restaurateur, philanthropist,” who joined fellow Shore culinary legend Joe Leone for the fundraising project.
Slightly less visible but equally significant is Catering by Marilyn, the expanding endeavor that recently acquired both a full-time director and its own dedicated van—and which is actively scouting its own self-contained facility.
“Being forced to sit still was actually a nice change of pace,” says the mother of twin five- year old girls—adding with a laugh, “it was also nice to take a little break from the kids!”
Ask Chef Marilyn about the fastest-growing sector of her professional life, and she’ll cite her culinary education non-profit Food for Thought by the Sea—part of a good-works gumbo that includes an association with The Boys and Girls Clubs (everything from a community garden to surfing lessons), a successful collaboration with city-based Interfaith Neighbors (with whom she established the west-side community restaurant Kula Cafe), and consistent support for entities ranging from Clean Ocean Action, to the Promenade of Mermaids.
While she soon vacated that cardboard condo, and returned to daily life with husband Scott Szegeski and their children Hari Mar and Rubi Dee, the experience impressed upon Marilyn a renewed sense of priorities, during “a major shift for me personally... as our business grew, parts of me kind of got lost.” “I’m looking for more balance between the personal and professional,” says the city resident whose public profile has included bids for elective office. “Day to day business operations can squash the spirit, and as a creative person, you want to revive that balance.” While the title of “mom” doesn’t top her official bio, it’s as much a component of the Schlossbach philosophy as “environmentalist, community activist, traveler and surfer.” And even that barely summarizes the former waitress who took the spotlight in the mid 1980s, when she stepped, ready-or-not, into the role of chef at Oshin, her brother Richard’s vanguard Asian fusion restaurant. Working with businessman-artist and dedicated surfer Szegeski, the self-taught chef would go on to found Labrador Lounge in Belmar; re-establishing it (with the original “sustainable Mexican” eatery Pop’s Garage) near the couple’s Normandy Beach home. From there, Marilyn and Scott brought their signature “vacation vibe”and “effortless cool” to several projects around Asbury Park—some of them (like the Langosta and its adjoining edition of Pop’s) becoming consistent attractions, while others (such as downtown Cajun/Creole restaurant Trinity and the Pope) remain the stuff of fond foodie memories. “We’ve always had a passion for Asbury Park,” says the daughter of a family with deep local roots. “My father lost money here; I lost money here…but I’m not one to back out.”

“I like to surround myself with people who know more than I know,” says the multi-tasker who credits Interfaith’s Paul McEvilly and Roger Boyce, as well as Red Cross veteran Debi Heptig, for their mentorship and support. “We need a bigger motivation beyond just loving to make money...it matters that they also love people.” Signifying Food for Thought’s heightened commitment is the recent acquisition of a food truck—a literal “vehicle for change” (donated by Land Rover of Monmouth) which the Schlossbach group seeks to outfit for active duty in 2018. The businesswoman with the expansive vision has scarcely stepped back from her activities on the neighborhood level. The evening of February 2 finds Chef Marilyn presiding over a Farm to Table Dinner keyed to Kula Café’s Urban Farm project, while a series of free community meals—hosted at Langosta on major holidays, and coordinated with Pat Sherman of grass-roots charity Feeding Frenz—continues on April 1 with an all-welcome Easter Sunday dinner. The return of summer weather promises a new slate of Marilyn-sponsored free Movies on the Beach. For now, both Langosta Lounge and Russell & Bette’s maintain full operations for the winter. The clouds cleared and the full moon reflected over the ocean, shining on 250 ocean advocates at Clean Ocean Action’s Dancing in the Moonlight at the Surfrider Beach Club in honor of the 20th anniversary of ending ocean dumping. While New Jersey used to be known as the “Ocean Dumping Capital of the World,” it is now a premier vacation destination and highly valued place to live. Dancing in the Moonlight helped raise important funds for COA’s year-round work to protect the ocean. The Lobiondo family, who owns Surfrider Beach Club, welcomed the event which was held at their Windows on the Water venue under a spectacular “supermoon” in the sky. ivia

henever one of the slow-moving, outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) changes signs, it’s big astrological news because its evolving energies influence us not only personally, but societally and globally as well. On December 19, 2017 nononsense, goal-oriented, control-loving Saturn, the planet that represents large organizations such as governments and multi-national corporations, moved into Capricorn, the sign that it rules. This means that Saturn’s energies and influence are being expressed at their strongest—the qualities of the sign reinforce the characteristics of the planet. After it enters Aquarius to stay at the end of 2020, Saturn will take approximately 29 years to return again to the sign of the mountain goat.
Saturn’s job is to give us the ground rules for success on our earthly planet. It is all about organization and control, and demands discipline, hard work, and the achievement of tangible results. If we pitch in and do our part, we can be rewarded with success and strong, secure foundations. With the no-nonsense planet that demands discipline, hard work, and progress in the sign that strengthens these same themes, it’s time to roll up the sleeves and knuckle down to the business at hand. Every planet has a plan of what it wants to accomplish during its passage. For Saturn, the goal is always to leave a legacy of security and strong foundations. It slows the pace, carefully and deliberately measuring the days as they unfold here on Planet Earth. Spontaneity, accelerated action, sudden surprise, and short-cuts are simply not in its repertoire, no matter what sign it’s in. If we do our part, Saturn delivers stability, security, and a strong base from which we can launch initiatives that bring success and the satisfaction of a “job well done” in all areas of life.
