IN 2003,
when RED HOT Magazine took its first steps out into the community, my grandson Hopper was born. A few years later, when he was steady on his feet, he jauntily stepped out on his first trick-or-treat adventure and on to the cover of this magazine. The moment caught for our family album spoke deeply to the heart of community and, here, in our 14th Anniversary issue, speaks perfectly to the heart of this publication as well. RED HOT Magazine is a love letter, pure and simple. We love reminding people why they’ve come here to live and work and play—to plant time, if not whole lives, along the banks of the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers and the vibrant towns and small cities within reach. In thousands of words and stories, in the building and placement of each advertisement, in the creative design and execution of every page, ours is a lyrical reflection that’s given back to our readers the intoxicating elixir they’ve come to drink from this flowing river area married to the sea. It’s our unique and cherished perspective to celebrate the culture and progress of place while always listening and honoring the heartbeat beneath.

“The Art Alliance is a humble place.” The modest adjective Bob Edelhauser chose to pay his compliments to the organization he’s belonged to for more than twenty years is one he knows goes to the heart of why the Art Alliance of Monmouth County has been beloved by its members since 1978 when it was founded based on the simple and deep belief that everyone can benefit from experiencing art, no exceptions. Jean Townsend was an abstract artist who saw the need for a place where doing art was a pleasure and discovery to be shared in the company of others, both in the process and in the presentation. She also knew that being an artist could be isolating and exclusionary. And so she started the Art Alliance as a low-key artist cooperative where art could be practiced without pressure. The Art Alliance gave the place where people could come together and grow as artists with the opportunity to exhibit and feel the satisfaction of offering up their your work to the community. In forty years, the original small group Jean Townsend brought together has expanded to over 200 members representing diverse artistic disciplines, including sculpture, painting, drawing, fiber, photography, collage and computer art. True to its unifying principle, everyone’s work is welcome at the Art Alliance, and membership is open to everyone, artists and supporters. The organization has always been all-volunteer, managed today by a fourteen member Board of Trustees dedicated to providing exhibition and studio space for area artists. Bob Edelhauser is the current president, and does the job in the community’s spirit of continued on next page

it’s-just-my-turn. “Jean Townsend started this place with a vision of what art really is that’s so alive and functioning,” he affirms. “We have to pass on.” Membership fees are modest: $40 a year, $20 for full-time students. The privileges are enormous and include affordable studio space, classes and workshops, exhibiting rights, monthly openings, a bimonthly newsletter and, importantly, the place to meet, discuss and exchange ideas about art in an artistic environment of studio, exhibition and classroom space. The annual exhibition schedule runs from September to June and includes monthly shows with unique themes. The majority of shows are open to members only, with September and December non-juried exhibits when all submitted work by members goes up. The Annual Jean Townsend Award Exhibition (members only) in November, The Statewide Annual Exhibition (members and non-members) in April, and the Ebba Osborne Memorial Award Exhibition (members and nonmembers) in May have cash awards. Work by artists from Shore House in Long Branch, an organization that helps people living with mental illness, will be exhibited at the January 2018 Invitational Show. The juried shows feature Window Exhibits that showcase the artist selected by the Curatorial Committee to judge works in the Main Gallery. Elaine Shor is a co-curator, artist, past and frequent board president, and long-time Art Alliance member who hasn’t missed the Monday Morning Life Drawing class since 1979. A regular at the legendary Wednesday Nite Class, she treasures the gathering that’s attracted many of the area’s most celebrate artists for years. “Everybody has some form of creative expression,“ she says enthusiastically. “Find your expression. It’s what makes us human.” The Art Alliance had its first location on Monmouth Street in the building that is now the Count Basie Theater. In 1992, 33 Monmouth Street became home, offering all the warmth and welcome that word can hold.
“Glass Berg,” by Marilyn Baldi, October Window Exhibit
This year, Jean Townshed’s original vision will be celebrated. Today, her wish, made forty years ago, for a place that would spark creativity in everyone continues to ignite the communities she loved.

he biggest and best-organized lurch of the undead in the WORLD returns to the boards and boulevards of Asbury Park augmented by zombie-themed happenings and a special salute to George Romero, whose Night of the Living Dead (1968) film reinvented not only the idea of zombies, but also the entire horror genre and the way people were scared by movies. The undead will lumber onto the herringboned hardwoods of the boardwalk for the 10th annual Asbury Park paranormal phenomenon. The APZW set the audited and certified records for the largest such gathering of costumed zombies anywhere on the planet‌twice. In 2010 the record was claimed with 4,093 undead counted on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. The record was later reclaimed in 2013 with 9,592 participants.
The gruesome celebrations of Guignol goreplay and costumed chaos is scheduled to commence from the Grand Arcade area of the Convention Hall complex. The Zombie Walk remains fabulously free as ever, with participants invited to create their own look or, for a Makeover Ticket fee enjoy a makeover from a battery of professional artists. Zombies lurch down the boardwalk, past the screaming gorgon faces of the Carousel and west along Cookman Avenue to downtown haunts and happenings.

In Memoriam George A. Romero and...friend
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
S
ince his passing July 16, 2017, George A. Romero is being rightly remembered for his standing as a game-changing master of horror cinema—as well as his enormous contribution to independent, beyond-the-Hollywood-box filmmaking in general. But did you know that his calling-card classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD boasts a crucial Asbury Park connection?
That would be through its initial distributor, The Walter Reade Organization—an arm of the national theater chain founded by patriarch Walter Reade Sr., and based here in Asbury town through its grand flagship Mayfair Theater and other local holdings.
It was Walter Reade Jr. who would oversee the expansion of the family business into the distribution end of the industry—and soon the company's comedy/tragedy mask logo would appear at the beginning of commercially released films that ranged from the highbrow comedies of French auteur Jacques Tati, to Japanese "kaiju" imports like SON OF GODZILLA. But it was NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD that brought the Organization its biggest (if not necessarily most prestigious) success—and, thanks to the connection with dozens of small Reade movie houses, went a long way toward making the concept of the Midnight Movie a thing. The Reade logo (first seen in early 60s imports like LORD OF THE FLIES, and eventually copyrighted through an Oakhurst, NJ address in 1969) is now missing from all but a couple of early video releases of DEAD, although it has reportedly been spotted on scattered TV showings. A few years back here at Convention Hall, a group of cast and crew members from the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD took part in a panel on the making of that pivotal thriller, during a ZombieFest event keyed to one of original founder Jason Meehan's record-setting Zombie Walks on the Asbury boards; a curious signifier of a "dead" city's rebirth, and a novel acknowledgment from one generation of visionary showmen to another.

dvances in health care are being made every year. Whether these developments are in the field of new technologies, breakthrough medications, patient safety measures or benchmarks established by national organizations, hospitals across the country are working hard to provide the best possible patient care.
This also holds true for Hackensack Meridian Health Riverview Medical Center. Recently, Riverview Medical Center’s performance has been recognized on both a state and national level. In July, Riverview Medical Center was named one of the best hospitals in New Jersey by U.S. News & World Report, with special recognition in four adult procedures and conditions: heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), knee replacement and colon cancer surgery. “It was a tremendous honor to be named one of the best hospitals in the state,” says Joseph H. Reichman, MD, FACS, vice president clinical effectiveness and medical affairs at Riverview Medical Center. “We have a superb care team that is intent on providing the highest quality, compassionate, and innovative care possible and we’re thrilled to see that our hard work is gaining recognition. But, this is just one important milestone on our journey to provide every patient excellence in clinical care and patient experience. That is the mission of Riverview Medical Center.” The U.S. News & World Report honor comes on the heels of recognition as the first hospital in New Jersey to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. The Joint Commission, a national non-profit organization, is recognized as setting the benchmark for quality and performance standards. “To achieve this recognition, Riverview underwent a rigorous review by Joint Commission experts who evaluated every component of our program,” says Dr. Reichman. “They evaluated how we manage our orthopedic patients from consultations, pre-operative protocols, intra-operative techniques, and post-surgical follow-up care. They assessed the entire spectrum of care.”
Joseph H. Reichman, MD, FACS Vice President Clinical Effectiveness and Medical Affairs
Riverview also recently received accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only awarded to centers that provide the highest level of breast care and undergo a demanding performance review.
“We are intensely focused on providing the absolute best care to patients in every area of our hospital and it’s important for our community to know that each and every team member is committed to that goal,” Dr. Reichman says. In addition to its commitment to superb clinical quality, Riverview is also committed to ensuring that care is cost effective. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administers a “Value-Based Purchasing Program,” which evaluates cost, clinical quality and patient satisfaction. Riverview Medical Center was ranked as the top hospital in New Jersey. “Riverview has many achievements of which to be proud,” says Dr. Reichman. “All of these achievements are simply an acknowledgement of our ongoing commitment to excellence.” For more information about services or achievements at Riverview Medical Center, please call 732-741-2700. 26

GOOD FOOD, GOOD FOLK, GREAT FUN By LISA READIE MAYER
W
hen Atlanta native Beth Herbruck moved from New York City to Atlantic Highlands with her husband in 2004, she left behind a successful career as an event planner working on everything from intimate weddings to corporate conferences for 10,000-plus. Though she loved her new seaside hometown and found it an ideal setting to raise their son and daughter, Beth found herself feeling homesick and missing the joy and inspiration that came from creating events and working with good food.
“When we moved to New Jersey my focus changed,” Beth recalls. I didn’t want to go back into the city because, when do people have events? On nights, weekends, and holidays! I wanted to find a way to do what I loved and build the sense of community I was missing, while still being present for our kids at school pick-ups and drop-offs, and homework time,” she says. While contemplating her next steps, Beth began noticing a new trend gaining traction in some parts of the country: supper clubs. A cross between private, impromptu, home parties and gourmet restaurant dinners, these pop-up dining experiences gather an eclectic group of friends and strangers around the table for great food, conversation, and culinary adventure. While keeping tabs on supper clubs like the Blind Pig in Asheville, NC, and the Mosquito Supper Club in New Orleans, Beth set out to create this concept at the Jersey shore. In 2015, the Good Folk Supper Club was born, starting with an email list of 44 friends, which has since grown by word of mouth to nearly 600. Each dinner event is announced in an email blast a few weeks
is a do-good mission behind Good Folk Supper Club; each event donates a portion of the proceeds to a different, local, non-profit organization like Lunch Break, Interfaith Neighbors, Mary’s Place by the Sea, Clean Ocean Action, and Second Life Bikes. Dinner themes have ranged from a ninecourse sushi tasting prepared by chef Rick Lee of Xina in Toms River, to a rustic, family-style feast served up by chefs Laura Brahn and Grace Crossman of Cardinal Provisions in Asbury Park, to an amazing,

But the desire to get back to hosting was part of the healing process, and Beth has four events lined up for this fall. First up, on Saturday, Oct. 7, will be a multi-course vegan dinner prepared by chef-owners Alex and Cara of Seed to Sprout. Though Beth won’t reveal the exact location, she hints it might

in advance, along with the time and date that tickets go on sale. The average cost is $125 per person and dinners typically sell out in 30 minutes. The number of attendees is purposely kept small to encourage connection and conversation— anywhere from 14 to 50 guests—depending on the location, which is usually somewhere between Atlantic Highlands and Asbury Park, but changes every time and is kept secret until the day before the event. Beth collaborates with a different chef— whose “day job” is typically in the kitchen of a top restaurant in the area—on each dinner, giving them full autonomy on creating the menu, which also remains a surprise until attendees arrive. Beth has partnered with a local craft brewery, distillery or wine sponsor on some events, while others are BYOB. In addition, there
locally sourced seafood supper prepared by Mosquito Supper Club founder Melissa Martin, who acted as guest chef. Each event is beautifully styled, often with handmade pottery, glassware and linens pulled from Beth’s personal collection to create Pinterest-worthy tablescapes and décor that reflect her design expertise and innate Southern hospitality. Farms, boat houses, Convention Hall in Asbury Park, and even a coffee shop have served as locations, each lending its own charm to the experience. “Each dinner is totally unique, and every aspect changes every time,” Beth explains. And, don’t expect assigned seats at the long farm tables. “There’s something wonderful about the awkward anxiety of sitting next to someone you don’t know and leaving as friends at the end of
be on a private farm and feature some of its produce. Then, on Sunday, Nov. 5, Good Folk Supper Club will collaborate with a dinner club in northern New Jersey at what Beth promises to be “an incredible location,” with a menu and theme focused on agricultural sustainability, and a charity partner helping to solve the problem of inner-city food deserts. Beth is also available to orchestrate supper-club style private dinners for birthday parties, anniversaries and other events. We can promise one thing about the Good Folk Supper Club: a good time will be had by all. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT GOODFOLKSUPPERCLUB.COM

On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately for George and Charlotte, everything that could go wrong does go wrong.

Nov. 4, 11, 17, 18 at 8:15pm; Nov. 5, 12, 19 at 2:00pm Described by Edward Albee as “…the greatest American play ever written,” the story follows the small town of Grover’s Corners through three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage,” and “Death and Eternity.” Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually—in one of the most famous scenes in American theater—die.
+ events throughout the season The building that houses the Monmouth Players, the Navesink Arts Center, is about to turn 100. Built in 1917 in the Colonial Revival style, the structure was erected by Ellen W. Duryea as a memorial to her husband Herman B. Duryea who 2017 had spent his boyhood in the area. The building has always been privately owned and operated by a nonprofit group evolving through time from the Duryea Foundation, the Navesink Duryea Library Association, and now the Navesink Arts Center. The original endowment from Mrs. Duryea survives to this day.
The building housed a reading room, a gymnasium with a stage, and a bowling alley in the basement. The library was founded in 1921 and became part of the Middletown Public Library through 2013. Today, the reading room is much as it was originally and is used as a lobby for the theater, a small performance space, a meeting room for various community groups, and an exhibit space. The gymnasium is now 1917 exclusively used by the Monmouth Players as the Dean K. Anderson Theater, and the bowling alleys are now a part of the theater’s “green room.”
The Realistic Joneses by Will Eno Feb. 10, 24 at 8:15pm; Feb 11, 17, 18, 25 at 2:00pm Bob and Jennifer and their new neighbors, John and Pony, are two suburban couples who have even more in common than their identical homes and their shared last names. As their relationships begin to irrevocably intertwine, the Joneses must decide between their idyllic fantasies and their imperfect realities. I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick | Apr. 14, 21, 27, 28 at 8:25pm.; Apr. 15, 22, 29 at 2:00pm After his television show is cancelled and his career lingers in Limbo, Andrew Rally relocates to New York, where he is offered the opportunity to play Hamlet onstage, but there's one problem: He hates Hamlet. His dilemma deepens with the entrance of John Barrymore's ghost, who arrives intoxicated and in full costume to the apartment that once was his. The contrast between the two actors, the towering, dissipated Barrymore whose Hamlet was the greatest of his time, and Andrew Rally, hot young television star, leads to a wildly funny duel over women, art, success, duty, television, and yes, the apartment. Aside from the Main Stage productions, the Players will also be offering Spoken Word evenings and a special Christmas Show.

fter their nine-year-old daughter Valerie succumbed to cancer, Sue and Ed Goldstein were determined that no family should have to travel great distances to receive superior medical care. Along with a group of close friends, they began fundraising efforts —tireless work that would lead to the 1977 opening of New Jersey’s first pediatric oncology facility at Summit Overlook’s Hospital. Forty years later, there are seven Valerie Fund Children’s Centers treating over 6,000 children in the tri-state area, including one at The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch. The Valerie Fund’s mission remains that of supporting comprehensive health care for children battling cancer and blood disorders. Rook Coffee has partnered again with The Valerie Fund for The Fourth Annual Rook Run (and walk) presented by lead sponsor World Subaru. A raffle A raffle for a 2018 Subaru Forester SUV will raise money for the children of The Valerie Fund. Event festivities will be set up throughout The Great Lawn Amphitheatre section of the Long Branch Boardwalk located at 10 Ocean Avenue between Cooper and Madison Ave, just north of Pier Village. Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate. Tinton Fall’s World Subaru, led by Joe Wajda, Executive Manager stepped up their charitable efforts this year with a donation of a car. The sales team visited The Valerie Fund Center at The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center and got to see firsthand the top-notch care children from the area were receiving. “The entire team at World Subaru is excited to partner with The Valerie Fund as the Lead Sponsor of the 4th Annual Rook Run (and walk). We applaud The Valerie Fund for their tireless commitment to helping children with cancer and blood disorders and we are proud to stand beside you and work towards raising money,” said Joe. Over the past three years, The Rook Run has raised nearly half a million dollars in support of The Valerie Fund’s mission. This year’s fundraising goal is $350,000. Participants may register online at rookrun.com. Registration is $40 for runners and walkers. Adult registration includes food, beverages, an official Rook Run (and walk) t-shirt, swag bag and race-day activities. Prediction and Possibility
TAPPING INTO THE ASTROLOGY’S WISE GUIDANCE TO NAVIGATE LIFE, RECOGNIZE THE POSSIBILITIES, AND MAKE THE BEST CHOICE
L
ast October at a major national conference, a panel of noted astrologers who predicted the results of the then-upcoming presidential election was the main event. Although the technical rationales differed within the group, the logic in every case was solid and the consensus 100%: Hillary Clinton would win. I'll leave it to you to imagine the fall-out, both within and outside the astrological community.
Although convincing cases can be made for using astrology as a tool to predict future events, I stand with those who believe that certainty is as much an illusion in astrology as it is in life. Instead, I tap the discipline’s vast wisdom and use it to describe the "climate" against which life and its choices unfold. Like a weather forecaster, I can tell if storms may be brewing, as they might be for example, when Mars, Uranus or Pluto is stirring the energetic pot. But if they are, it's up to each of us to decide whether or not to get the rain gear out of the closet. What's more, astrology can provide important insight into how you might best use current or upcoming energies in the service of growth and progress and minimize disruption and stress. In the energetic cycles that underpin the astrological cosmos, there are times when energies flow smoothly and others when they exert pressure. Both are opportunities for positive forward motion, but the degree of comfort and difficulty varies and the strategies that can be used to maximize the outcome differ. Sometimes pleasure and relaxation in the service of replenishment are in order. At others, it's time to roll up the sleeves, grit the teeth, and get going, and there's a whole spectrum of possibilities and combinations in between. But at the end of the day, free will and choice are what determines the outcome, that and the Universe's unremitting commitment to pointing us in the direction of our highest good, not predetermined "fate." A quick example. Twenty years ago, I miraculously survived a boating accident that I had no business surviving. At the time the astrological signatures of potential transformation, including the “BIG” transformation, were abundant in my chart, and a fortune-teller type astrologer might have told me the week before to get my affairs in order and say my goodbyes. It was a very possible outcome, for sure, and certainly rough patch to navigate, but it led me to examine my life and make important shifts of focus. And thankfully I'm here to tell the story. Odds are that some predictions are bound to come true, but in this world of eternal “becoming" I'll stick to monitoring the astrological radar, trying to recognize the possibilities and make the best choices, and help those who seek astrology's wise guidance do the same.
BLESSINGS ON YOUR WAY, ALICE
