THE WINTER OF OUR

CONTENT Y

It’s in that magic-time moment when anything seems possible; when the prospect of being transported from your surroundings (and being completely dazzled by the journey) is at its strongest. You know that moment? It’s like that in the Red Bank area all the time—perhaps never more so than the season of holiday traditions and New Year resolutions.

by Boris Kustodiev

A CURTAIN RAISER TO A RED HOT SEASON OF ONSTAGE DELIGHTS

ou know that moment. In fact, if you’re a fan of great entertainment, you live for that brief but intriguing interlude—somewhere after the obligatory announcement about the cell phones and the candy wrappers, and before the first performer appears onstage—when a hush comes over the auditorium, and scores of strangers prepare to share in an experience for which there can be as many interpretations as there are souls in the seats.

THE COUNT BASIE THEATRE SEASON OF LIGHTS for tickets and additional information COUNTBASIETHEATRE.ORG

You needn’t be among the generations of local families who have looked to Red Bank as the area’s “Holiday Capital” to feel a certain excitement in the air. The Count Basie Theatre—a place that presents an enticing picture window into the sights and sounds of the season of lights—is under the new management team of COO Justine Robertson and incoming CEO Adam Philipson. The venerable venue will ring out 2012 by reinforcing a commitment to some long-playing community favorites—while looking ahead to 2013 with an eye toward making some new friends.

2012-13 WINTER SEASON

That happy mix of the old and the new hits home in earnest with the annual holiday concert by the Monmouth Civic Chorus (December 2, 2012)—a performance of THE MESSIAH AND MORE that represents the debut of the acclaimed and awardwinning organization’s new Artistic Director, Dr. Ryan Brandau. The good doctor leads the assembled voices of the MCC in the Christmas portion of Handel’s beloved oratorio (without a doubt, one of those seasonal signifiers that define the Yuletide season in Red Bank), as well as in Vivaldi’s lively Gloria and other holiday favorites arranged by the conductor. A more recently minted Red Bank tradition—this one traveling all the way from the Midwest—blasts away the humbugs on December 15, when Nebraska Theatre Caravan returns with a large-cast, full-orchestra, high-tech staging of the Dickens classic, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, that draws its crowd-pleasing power from a score of traditional seasonal hymns and chestnuts. Another Red Bank tradition returns shortly thereafter, when the borough-based Company of Dance Arts brings its cherished production of Tchaikovsky’s ballet THE NUTCRACKER (December 8-9, 2012) to life, with a cast that mixes professional NYC dancers with the budding ballerinas of CODA. It’s a family favorite that can certainly serve to whet the appetite for the first of two appearances by the State Ballet Theatre of Russia, when the touring dancers of the world-famous Voronezh Academy present a TCHAIKOVSKY SPECTACULAR (December 21, 2012) that offers up a fantasia of Sleeping Beauties, elegant Swans and, yes, Nutcrackers. The SBTR troupe returns to the Basie boards with Prokofiev’s ROMEO AND JULIET (February 17, 2013), in a production choreographed by Michael Lavrovsky. The accent on dance extends well into the new year, when the Count welcomes back a genuine prince of Broadway. In his new touring showcase, tap dance top-dog SAVION GLOVER (January 11, 2013) pays homage to the great tap artists of the past century with SoLe SANCTUARY: A Hoofer’s Meditation on the Art of Tap.

THE TWO RIVER THEATER CELEBRATES STORY for tickets and additional information TRTC.ORG

Meanwhile over at Two River Theater, Artistic Director John Dias and his team from the borough’s newest performing arts center mark the transition from 2012 to 2013 by celebrating a pair of classic storytellers, in a way that’s simultaneously fresh and new. For the annual Two River Theater Company family show, the beloved animal characters of Kenneth Grahame return to the spotlight in A WIND IN THE WILLOWS CHRISTMAS (December 8-30, 2012), an original piece that musicalizes and Americanizes Mr. Toad and friends with a score of new songs by the team of Sarah Schlesinger and (ex NFL tackle turned Grammy winning Nashville songster) Mike Reid. Followers of TRTC know the Reid-Schlesinger partnership as the creative force behind the premiere of In This House from last season—the same slate that offered up the area stage debut of Tony nominated (and Obie winning) Michael Cumpsty. The Shakespearean star of stage and screen (who makes his home in nearby Middletown) makes his Red Bank return with a classic from a Bard of a different era—Noel Coward, whose “valentine to the theater” PRESENT LAUGHTER (February 16-March 10, 2013) promises to be a perfect fit for the Broadway veteran’s stellar skills.

MONMOUTH PLAYERS EXPLORE AND EXPAND for tickets and additional information MONMOUTHPLAYERS.ORG

Just a short country ramble from downtown Red Bank—past Many Mind Creek, the Old Stone Church and some of the most historyinfused scenery in the Two Rivers area—the longest-running stage troupe in Monmouth County rolls on into a truly amazing 60th season of live community theater—a slate of entertainments that, like the company’s longtime headquarters, harbors more than a few surprises.

by Boris Kustodiev

Beyond the back wall of one of the area’s oldest (and tiniest) libraries, the Navesink Library Theatre opens up into a comfortably scaled auditorium that boasts a raised proscenium stage, a fully up to date tech booth, and a famous spread of home-baked desserts that have helped make the Monmouth Players one of the “worst kept secrets” on the Garden State’s nonprofessional stagescape. Under producers Lori and Paul Renick, the respected Players brand has been subject to an intriguing degree of exploration and expansion—the result being shows like WIT (November 30-December 16, 2012), Margaret Edson’s Pultizer Prize winning drama of a college professor in the final stages of terminal illness. A complex tapestry of life, death, memory and brief nudity, it’s presented under the “Not Necessarily the Players” banner as part of an ongoing commitment to new and different works. The Players return in earnest with ALMOST, MAINE (February 2-23, 2013), a “midwinter night’s dream” by John Cariani that enchants an ensemble cast of lovers and neighbors beneath the northern lights. 13

ART TO ART by CORT SMITH

A GIFT OF ART IS A GIFT FROM THE HEART THE RED BANK ART WALK

FREE AFTER-PARTY Jamian’s Food & Drink 72 Monmouth Street

NOVEMBER 24 | 5 - 9pm

T

he art scene in Red Bank has been described as everything from vibrant and eclectic to funky and fantastic. A 2004 article in The New York Times went so far as to say that the borough “has fashioned itself into a mini-center for the arts.” But what many people may not know is that art—original fine art, especially— can be found, not just in galleries, but all over town: in restaurants, cafés, churches, and other non-traditional locations.

What better way to enjoy, appreciate, and, perhaps, purchase these oftentimes local creations than by taking a leisurely walking tour along a prepared route throughout Red Bank with stops at a variety of art spaces? That’s what The Red Bank Art Walk is all about.

+

Originated several years ago by a group of Red Bank art enthusiasts, the Art Walk was reintroduced, after a four-year hiatus, in May 2012 and held again in August. The event received its new lift-off thanks, in large measure, to the efforts of Robert Langdon, a professional photographer and the gallery manager/curator of Gallery U, located at 80 Broad Street and part of Universal Institute Medical Rehab Therapy Center, which serves individuals with traumatic brain injuries. Continued from page 15

“Red Bank has been a strong artist community for decades, and we really think that having the Art Walk is a great way to bring the focus back to that,” says Robert, who heads the newly formed Red Bank Art Walk Committee. The group has representatives from Amy Manor Interior Design, The Art Alliance of Monmouth County, Frame to Please, Gallery 135 at Red Bank Community Church, Gallery U, Red Bank River Center, and Studio 25. According to participants, the summer Art Walk in August drew hundreds of people who visited dozens of art spaces all over town. Megan Prenderville, a committee member who runs Frame to Please in The Galleria on Bridge Avenue, was thrilled by the turnout. The theme of the November walk is A Gift of Art Is a Gift from the Heart, which is fitting, explains Robert Langdon, since November 24— the Saturday after Black Friday—is National Small Business Day. In support of National Small Business Day, America Express will be offering a $25 statement credit per card for shopping at any small business (card members can register their Amex cards in early November). “We will use the Art Walk to bring attention to the many unique small businesses in Red Bank that exhibit original art...and their owners, who are working hard to showcase quality art that is affordable as the perfect holiday gift.” More than twenty venues are on the self-guided tour of art spaces that include traditional galleries such as the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, Frame to Please, Studio 25, and Gallery U, and nontraditional spaces—art-friendly restaurants and cafes such as Front Street Trattoria and Jamian’s Food and Drink; interior design spaces including Amy Manor Interior Design; places of worship such as Gallery 135 at Red Bank Community Church, an exhibit space curated by artist and associate pastor Gerda Liebmann; and beauty salons including Glen Goldbaum Salon (Lambs and Wolves). Painting, sculpture, photography, glasswork—are all on exhibit in a town lit up with holiday festivities and decorations. Going forward, Robert and fellow committee members—with support from Red Bank RiverCenter, the borough’s downtown management alliance—would like to see the Art Walk held four times each year. “The event is such a wonderful opportunity for everyone, whether from the area or from out of town to come into a quaint little art community and really discover what Red Bank has to offer—and there’s a lot,” says Robert.

I SING GOD’S MUSIC BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL FREE.

Spiri “The Queen of Gospel,” Mahalia Jackson

LET THE The Monmouth Civic Chorus in concert, 2011

THE SONGS OF GOSPEL Jesse Moorer and The Anointed Sons of Jersey

By GILDA ROGERS

Behind the closed doors of the Pilgrim Baptist Church Sunday morning worship service, there’s a joyful noise going on. If you have a heartbeat, before you know it, you’re up on your feet. That’s the power of gospel music—a staple in the tradition of the black church. And one more truth: it makes you happy, even at times when you want to cry. Jesse Moorer Jr., has been bringing a lot of joy and happiness to the 116 year-old church at 172 Shrewsbury Avenue in Red Bank, as its Minister of Music since 1996. “Gospel music gave me a platform to witness to people about what it means to be a Christian,” said Moorer, “and to inspire them in a way that would draw them closer to God.” The deep tradition of the music heralds such icons as Mahalia Jackson, Cissy Houston, James Cleveland and contemporaries like BeBe and CeCe Winans and Mary Mary, all of whom moved the riveting sound from the black church to the main stage. Moorer, who is no stranger to the performance stage, also sings and formed The Alliance Singers with Antonio Lawrence, Corinda Carford, Michelle Moore, Antoinette Moore and Tiffany Andrews. The group sang backup on Bruce Springsteen’s album, The Rising, which was in tribute to 9/11.

THE GOSPEL IN SONG Monmouth Civic Chorus

By CJ ANSORGE

For many music lovers, the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah sung by the Monmouth Civic Chorus is the highlight of the season, and will be, again, this year at the annual holiday concert at the Count Basie Theatre on Sunday, December 2 when Dr. Ryan Brandau makes his debut as the new artistic director and conductor. The Chorus, started in 1949, has grown from a small group of singers to an award-winning chorus of more than eighty voices.

MCC Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. Ryan Brandau

The concert, Messiah and More, features Handel’s oratorio along with Vivaldi’s Gloria and Dr. Brandau’s own arrangements of holiday favorites. A quartet of guests soloists include soprano Jo Ellen Miller, mezzo-soprano Kate Maroney, tenor Steven Caldicott Wilson, and baritone John Maynard. MCC has performed on tour in eleven European countries, and at numerous performance venues in the Northeast, including Carnegie Hall in Manhattan; the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D. C and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. The Chorus, a non-sectarian, non-profit, independent community group, has with a paid musical staff, but, otherwise, depends totally on dedicated volunteers, who either

“We were backup on four songs on the album,” said Moorer, who grew up in Red Bank. “My City of Ruins, Meet Me at Mary’s Place, Let’s Be Friends and the title cut, The Rising. We also performed with Bruce in 2001 at Convention Hall in Asbury Park. Michelle Moore is on tour with Bruce now.” “I got a call one day from Corinda who said, ‘Jesse, I need you to get on the next ferry to New York. Jon Stewart wants us on his show.’” The Alliance Singers performed on The Daily Show, appearing as a traditional gospel choir as Jon Stewart impersonated a preacher. “The music is my life,” said Moorer, who is also one of the founding members, along with Antonio and Stacy Lawrence, of The Anointed Sons of Jersey (TASOJ). Today, the award-winning group, together since 1983, is comprised of Daniel Grant, Shannon Stokes, Jeremy Jennings, Angelo Perrozzi, Bill Jones and Micah Savage. They recently travelled to Atlanta, Georgia, to receive the “Associate Gospel Promoter and Management Artist of the Year Award.”

Jesse Moorer Jr. stands in front of The Anointed Sons own tour bus that recently took the group to Atlanta, Georgia, where they received the “Associate Gospel Promoter and Management Artist of the Year Award.”

TASOJ has two CD’s, God Will Never Change and Christian Race. “When it comes to gospel music,“ said Moorer, “I’m doing God’s will.” Now let the church say, “Amen!”

love to sing and are members, or just love to listen. “Over the years the organization has grown in numbers and music quality,“ says Susan Metz, a member of the Chorus and the group’s volunteer marketing manager. “Our musical horizons have always expanded through the leadership of our musical directors.” Dr. Brandau, who received his B.A. in music, magna cum laude, from Princeton University, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the Yale School of Music, and an MPhil in historical musicology from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). According to Metz, an important criterion in his selection was his interest in new music and creative programming. A MCC rehearsal

with Director and MCC Conductor William R. Shoppell, Jr., 1973.

The Chorus returns to the Count Basie Theatre with I Have a Dream on Saturday, March 16, 2013— a concert that honors the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King iconic speech, and the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. The music will range from African-American spirituals and Civil War songs to more contemporary pieces like a choral arrangement of U2’s moving tribute, MLK. Since it was composed in 1741, Handel’s Messiah has become one of the best known and frequently performed choral works in Western music. “But it’s music that never gets old,” explains Susan Metz. “We know the notes, but music is not about the notes. It’s about the expression and the feelings. And our director is leading us to find a new approach, to hear the music with fresh ears.” Hallelujah!

Leonardo Jewelers

GETTING TO KNOW YOU When you walk into Leonardo Jewelers, there’s a fresh sparkle and spaciousness that comes with the major renovation that has just been completed, but to the couple who is there to pick up the beautiful diamond-studded watch that marks the happy occasion of becoming grandparents for the first time, it’s only the feeling of family at Leonardo that matters. “That’s why we’ve been coming here for thirty years,” says the retired physician. “These people know us. They’ve always been involved in the happy moments of our lives.” Lourdes Zeik-Chivi is beaming like a proud fairy godmother. “I believe that jewelry is, absolutely, the most emotional and personal purchase.”

“Nothing touches the body like jewelry.”

Her family-owned jewelry business has a history that dates back to 1964 when her father, Lourdes Zeik-Chivi, Leonardo Zeik, opened the original store in Leonardo Jewelers Elizabeth, and, within a few years, became the only Cuban American ROLEX dealer in the country. The new gleaming ROLEX Corner in Leonardo Jewelers, Red Bank marks the latest show of confidence in that longstanding partnership. Leonardo Jewelers is now the exclusive ROLEX dealership in all of Monmouth, Ocean, and Eastern Middlesex counties.

It's our customers who teach us.

Leonardo carries a wide selection of “the best of the best” timeless timepieces, and, as with all the fine jewelry here, the reference point is always what works and makes sense for the customers who count on Leonardo to offer only “the best of the best”—whether to add thoughtfully to purchases already made, or, for new customers, to begin to build a totally personalized collection. Diamond engagement rings and weddings bands…international estate jewelry from the most important collections…easy-to-wear cabled creations by American designer David Yurman…precious pearls from the most exotic oceans of the world…For all its breath-taking range, the selection represents choices carefully made, one piece at a time, with the understanding that Leonardo Jewelers is really in business to make the happy moments in life even happier.

THE TOY SHOP AROUND THE CORNER

M

aybe kids were different in 1984 when ToyMasters opened on White Street, but Denise Zappoli—who still owns and runs the same shop she started with her husband, Paul—doesn’t think so. “We’ve never been the place for the three-minute-attentionspan toys,“ she says with the knowing smile of a mother, grandmother, and card-carrying Santa’s helper. There are very few electronics here. At ToyMasters, generations of customers have counted on finding something special—and unplugged—to enrich the lives and playtime of their children...each toy personally selected, with years of experience, by Denise herself. “We specialize in the classics,” Denise explains, “and toys that become ones.”

Denise Zappoli

Board games, dolls, dress-ups, trucks, building sets, puzzles...there are literally thousands of play things for young children, infants to pre-teens, that fill the shelves and countertops of this cozy little toy store. Brands like PlayMobile, Lego (“always in the top three every year”), Calico Critters, Madame Alexander, Melissa & Doug are staples, with lasting play-power, that never go out of style. “This is a neighborhood store, a family-run business,“ says Denise. “My customers tell me what they want, and I listen.” The personal service is really personal, and a very different experience than big-box or on-line shopping. The new Brainsuite iCT Operating Room at Riverview is the first in the greater New York City area, second in the state of New Jersey, and one of only 10 sites throughout the country.

A CUT ABOVE Two new state-of-the-art operating suites now open “Riverview and Meridian Health saw a need for these larger, hybrid operating rooms for our surgeons to successfully perform scientific cutting edge surgeries and we now have the technology and the additional space in our OR that will take Riverview into the future.” John Rose, M.D., chairman of surgery at Riverview Medical Center.

by TOM PAOLELLA for Riverview Medical Center

N

early 8,500 surgical procedures are performed annually at Riverview Medical Center. Over the past three years, Riverview’s surgical volume has grown by more than 20% and has created a need to improve and enhance our current operations,” says John Rose, M.D., chairman of surgery at Riverview Medical Center. As more patients continue to realize the quality of care and convenience of Riverview for their surgical needs, Riverview recognized the importance of adding more operating room capacity for surgeons, team members, and the most advanced surgical equipment. As a result, last spring Riverview announced the creation of a 22,000 square foot center for surgical excellence to be constructed in the Blaisdell Pavilion, on the Medical Center campus. Riverview is pleased to announce that the second to last phase of this expansion, two new operating suites, are open and caring for the community. This opening marks the completion of the most significant surgical project in the Center’s history. These two new operating suites enable patients to continue to receive advanced surgical procedures close to home, instead of traveling to New York City or Philadelphia.

The hybrid OR combines conventional operating room capabilities with state-of-the-art imaging which not only provides improved, clearer pictures for the surgeon, but a wider angle view and enhanced depth of field, making the surgical procedure and instrument location more precise. In a hybrid OR, the technology is brought to the patient, offering access to the highest level of equipment necessary in minimally invasive procedures, without ever moving the patient or delaying surgery. The range of clinical applications that benefit from use of the iCT/BrainLab technology includes: cranial, spinal, ear/nose/throat, head & neck, trauma, orthopedic, and vascular surgery. Additional benefits of this advanced technology includes the elimination of physically moving a patient away from the operating suite during procedures and increased patient safety by identification of hematomas during surgery. “Technology of this magnitude plays a significant role in our surgical capabilities and the new operating suites afford Riverview an increased opportunity to provide our patients and families with the very latest in surgical innovation,” says Timothy J. Hogan, FACHE, regional president for Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital.

I’m IMPORTANT I believe in the power of early detection. I lost my husband to colon cancer at a young age. So, while my health has always been important, it is even more important now. I am my children’s only parent and their biggest cheerleader. They also know that Mom is a strong advocate for preventative medicine.

That is why I make it a priority to visit the Women’s Center at Riverview. The Center rivals any in New York or New Jersey. I feel incredibly lucky to have Dr. Won right here in our community. I continue to put my health in her hands because I believe she is the best. I am a parent. I am an advocate. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305. Or visit www.RiverviewMedicalCenter.com/WomensCenter

Care In Need. Care Indeed. Oldest archival photo of VNA Health Group nurse providing child health care at home in 1920’s.

tory has it that the daughters of local social reformer and philanthropist Geraldine L. Thompson were riding their ponies on the outskirts of the family farm in Lincroft, when they came upon a frail six-yearold boy at the side of a dirt road. The boy begged them to follow him to his dilapidated home nearby, where the girls found the rest of his family sicklier than he. The girls brought back their mother, who recognized the symptom of tuberculosis, and proceeded to care for them. The year was 1912. And the incident was likely the genesis of what today is known as the VNA Health Group—Visiting Nurse Association Health & Hospice, headquartered in Red Bank. From that seminal moment, Geraldine Thompson worked relentlessly, not only to eradicate the ravages of TB, but to help charter an in-house nursing service to address the health needs of the greater Middletown area. The energetic group created well-baby clinics, took care of the homeless, and sent out nurses to care for the elderly—everything Geraldine could manage to “care for her neighbors in need.” In this regard, not much has changed.

“Our mission continues to be to caring for those in need,” says Kathy McKeever, VNA’s director of marketing who has compiled much historical material and written extensively about the century-old non-profit. Today, VNA is the state’s largest nonprofit community provider of home care and hospice and communitybased services.

and grants don’t cover it. At VNA, charitable dollars will. The need for VNA has increased substantially in the wake of a Medicare ruling resulting in hospitals not getting paid for patients who return within 30 days of discharge. “With our home care,

No one knows this better than Bridget Murphy, VNA’s chief philanthropy officer. “The generosity of community, whether in the form of attending an event or including us in their state planning, allows us to continue taking care of the most disabled, complex patients,” she explains, noting this is something that sets VNA apart. Other organizations may not offer programs such as wound care, for example, because it’s expensive to maintain

VNA is more than “visiting nurses” (there are 500plus), but nurses do, indeed, visit. Last year, they and other professional staff (VNA has more than 1,700 employees, as well as volunteers) traveled more than five million miles to care for patients. Geraldine Thompson (white straw hat and hands clasped) The stats are astounding: and Geraldine's friend Eleanor Roosevelt looking at the architectural plans for the VNA Health Group Geraldine The VNA Health Group Thompson Building (then MCOSS) in 1949 in Red Bank. cares for 120,000 throughout 13 counties representing 78% of the state’s population; 4,000 patients, on average, receive care at home on any given day, with over 100,000 individuals and families receiving care and support annually— and this includes 10,000 individuals who benefit regardless of their ability to pay. While VNA is a Medicare-certified organization (in 2011 62% of revenue came from Medicare) and accepts managed care commercial insurance, those revenue sources are never enough to cover the full costs of what VNA provides. It’s those monies from grants, fundraising, and personal donations that make the critical difference.

we can provide a range of services—from nursing care through education, teaching, home rehab, and medication management—to help keep those who can’t care for themselves independently, from going back to the hospital,” explains Kathy. There’s no shortage of challenges ahead, and VNA feels well poised to meet them. The new president and CEO, Dr. Steven Landers, “is a really passionate man with a vision and a lot of great ideas for us going forward,” says Kathy. With more than 78 million

aging baby boomers on the horizon, there is an increasing need for new approaches to home and community care for patients of all ages, Dr. Landers wrote in VNA’s annual report. To which he added: “Our story is only the beginning.”

RYAN’S WAY

Galleria Gold A GEM OF A JEWELRY STORE

GALLERIA SHOPS

by OLIVIA IANNONE

DIRECTORY

It can happen at any moment. A call comes in from a man, five minutes down the road, who needs to find “the perfect piece of jewelry for a unique woman”—and fast!

Frank Ryan

For some jewelers, such a request would be too ambiguous—and ambitious—to fulfill, but Frank Ryan, owner of Galleria Gold, excels at just this sort of assignment. By the time the customer arrives, Frank has his shop’s collection narrowed down to a handful of pieces and, inevitably, one of them is exactly what the visitor had in mind. A small gem of a shop set amidst the charming collection of boutiques and eating establishments in the historic Eisner building on Bridge Avenue, Galleria Gold opened in 1994 and has seen loyal patrons return, year after year, ever since. No matter who walks in the door, Frank takes time to get to know his customer. According to him, success stems, not just from the quality of his merchandise and a sharp eye for style, but a proven knack for reading and remembering personalities that translates into an ideal piece of jewelry. When called for, he will design custom pieces. In addition to his own creations, Frank sells the work of a variety of handpicked designers, and has collected a wide range of high-quality jewelry. Since it opened 18 years ago as one of the first shops in The Galleria, Galleria Gold has evolved with the times, expanding its collection while staying in tune with current styles. Its gleaming display cases are brimming with options that offer a range of prices and styles. For Frank, The Galleria has been the perfect home for the business that he has built from the ground up. The Galleria Shops plays host to a community of small businesses that Frank compares to a family that helps each other, while providing a personalized shopping experience in an enclosed, intimate space like no other in Red Bank. It’s truly unique... just like every one of his customers.

The marionette artists Trevor Silakowski, Jim Racioppi, and Hal Holst learn every part in every show, as the puppeteers often switch off characters as they move with lightning-fast precision backstage.

by TOM CHESEK

STRINGS ATTACHED. MAGIC INFUSED. Paper Moon Puppet Theatre… a place with its own identity, with fairy tale murals on the wall keyed to the classic children’s stories that comprise the company’s core repertory There are probably parents out there who would think such a thing as a marionette show to be hopelessly old-school. Too gently paced to compete with the hyper-stimulated sugar-rush of millennial kids’ entertainment. Too honest in its presentation; too lacking in the wisecracking pop-cultural references that pepper the multiplex CGI blockbusters.

NOVEMBER 17

THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS/ THE SNOW QUEEN

But the kids know. The kids always know—and as James Racioppi could tell you time and again, it’s the kids who stand to teach the grownups a thing of three.

“They shape the performance,” says the founder of Paper Moon Puppet Theatre, in describing his loyal audience. “The kids give you back so much more than you can ever give them—and they make it possible for me to wake up every morning loving what I do.” As master puppeteer, producer, director, playwright—and designer-crafter of sets, costumes, and characters—what Racioppi does is nothing short of summoning a magical little world into being with each Paper Moon performance; an ongoing endeavor that’s infused at every level with the very real passion and artistry of the man who pulls the strings. And he’s been doing it locally for some 15 years—initially at the First Avenue Playhouse in Atlantic Highlands and since 2010, the professional puppet troupe has had its very own Paper Moon Theatre. It’s the culmination of a dream for the Cooper Union graduate. Having studied his craft with the acclaimed Puppetworks founder Nick Coppola (who memorably staged Haydn’s marionette opera “Philemon und Baucis” at Lincoln Center)—and having worked with the likes of Wayland Flowers & Madame and TV’s Captain Kangaroo—Racioppi has become mentor, in turn, to artists who have gone on to establish

Jim Racioppi, Trevor Silakowski, and Hal Holst.

puppetry programs at major universities, and (in the case of Paper Moon alumnus Doug Strich) operate the well-known Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park. Forever on the lookout for “new ideas and input, particularly on the design end of things,” the veteran puppeteer has recruited new assistants from places that range from Monmouth University, to a neighboring barbecue restaurant. The level of dedication is evident in the Saturday afternoon performances at Paper Moon, when Racioppi and a crew of three to four assistant puppeteers present their own adaptations of such beloved tales as “Rumplestiltskin” and “Snow White” on a detailed miniature proscenium stage—scripted shows (performed to a recorded soundtrack of dialogue and music) for which every character, every prop and every stick of scenery has been custom-designed and built from scratch. When taking in a Paper Moon production from the audience, it doesn’t take long before all sense of relative size melts away; the hand-crafted marionettes assuming the scale of actors on a full-size stage as the viewer is drawn into the compelling story—and it’s not until one has a look behind the scenes that the marvelous illusion is placed back into its real-world context.

Often conducted by Racioppi’s partner John McAllister, those post-show backstage tours and mini-lectures are an illuminating journey in themselves for young audience members who may very well represent the next generation of puppetry professionals. The troupe also boasts three self-contained “touring” productions that circulate throughout regional schools and even nursing homes—and a hand-puppet unit is available for appearances at such venues as the Avice Noblett Children’s Room at Red Bank Public Library. It’s at the Paper Moon home stage where the bond between artists and audience is most evident; the performers respecting the timeless strengths of the source

material, and the kids immersing themselves in the performance to an extent that dispels modern notions of fragmented attention spans. “Some of our best audiences have been special needs kids,” observes Racioppi. “An autistic kid won’t look at you, won’t talk to you—but he’ll open up and talk to a puppet.” The coming months promise the introduction of some exciting new features at Paper Moon, including the company’s first productions designed for hand-rod puppets (“they’re so eloquent...things become more lyrical with them”) and an ambitious Puppetfest in the spring of 2013, boasting guest “icons and mentors” from New York, as well as returning graduates of the Paper Moon crew. Also on the back burner is a plan to do “an introduction to opera, using puppets”—and the theatre continues to serve as host venue for special presentations by the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council. A special program through the holiday season combine marionette productions of two seasonal classics—“The Night Before Christmas” and “The Snow Queen.” Performances are 12:30pm on Saturdays (with weekday performances available to schools, camps, preschools and other organizations), and reservations ($9 per person).

RIVER ROAD BOOKS a classic

R

iver Road Books is a marvel of an independent bookstore that not only has stood the test of time as a treasured member of the Fair Haven business community, but also bucked the trend of closing bookstores...and thrives while doing it.

Laurie Potter, one of the store’s four owners, credits the shop’s success to a simple philosophy: really get to know your customers, and connect them with great books. Here, in the cheerful, relaxed atmosphere of this neighborhood gathering place, customers are greeted like old friends, which, in many cases, they are. “It’s a trust that the community has with the staff,” says Potter. “We have a lot of loyal customers.” In an era when websites and e-readers are driving large booksellers into bankruptcy, River Road Books experienced a 15% increase in sales from last year. Seven years ago, Laurie Potter and coowners Sharon Everett, Kim Robinson, and Karen Rumage decided they “wanted to design a bookstore where we would want to shop” and, together, they did it. River Road Books “brings together classic literature and the best current titles in a fun place to browse, right next door.” Today, the store reaches out into the Fair Haven and Rumson school system, working with the Superintendant of Schools to order textbooks for the district, and organize in-school literary events.

by OLIVIA IANNONE

Authors regularly come to the store for signings and readings, with many River Road events geared toward children. Young readers can come to browse, attend writing workshops in a kid-friendly environment or, always, have their own book talk with a friendly member of the staff. After school is a busy time of day when the children’s section becomes like second home, for parents and youngsters alike. The store is brimming with titles for all ages and interests, carefully chosen by the staff. Recommendations—written on white slips of paper—lead customers to the favorite works of wellread employees. And if, perchance, you don’t find what you’re looking for, you can order any book and, almost always, pick it up the next morning— a service to customers that Potter says is much appreciated and one of the store’s key features. While the book display at the front door may change to make room for new titles, visitors to River Road Books can trust that they will find one of the store’s owners on-site to help, or simply say hello. And trust, as Laurie Potter pointed out, is the key to a happy ending for everyone.

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

In 2008, our bank launched a program that offered no-fee, below-market residential mortgages to any homebuyer purchasing a home from any of the builders the bank financed. It was a proactive initiative with a trickledown effect that helped to stimulate the local economy. BILL MOSS | President/CEO, Two River Community Bank

YOUR COMMUNITY. YOUR BANK.

Bill Moss

I

f actual example is the best way to illustrate what the Two River Community Bank means by superior personal customer service, its president and CEO Bill Moss is ready:

One of our loan officers received a Friday call on his cell with a ‘rather urgent’ request for financing. While loan officers do not normally work over the weekends, we contacted our loan committee that afternoon, said we’re working on this over the weekend, and here’s a heads up. On Monday, the loan was approved, to the borrower’s considerable advantage. And, he adds, “We’ve done these types of things numerous times.” The Two River Community Bank new headquarters in Tinton Falls.

Going to extremes—routinely—on the customers’ behalf was one of the founding principals of Two River Community Bank when it opened in 2000. Just 12 years later, the NASDAQ-traded financial institution would break $700 million in total assets, and have 11 branches in Monmouth County and four in Union County, with plans for strategic expansion. The bank will be adding a second Red Bank location this month. From the beginning, what made Two River Community Bank different, made it better. While large banks tend to be transaction driven, this community bank is more hands-on, relationship driven. “We’re much more imbedded in the community we live in,” Bill explains. A 32-year banking veteran, he has clients who have been with him for thirty years. “Many clients have followed me and our team of lenders to Two River Community Bank. They regard us as their trusted advisor.” Nationwide, some 60% of loans, $1 million or less, are made by community banks. Two River Community is a preferred SBA lender with an approximate $600 million loan portfolio that is 85% commercial and 15% consumer. “Small business lending, private banking, medical professionals…these are some of our niches,” Bill notes, adding that, “At our bank, the loan process is not cookie-cutter, but individually ‘crafted’ with stringent underwriting criteria.” “We want the customer to be successful,” he stresses. “During the protracted economic downturn, Two River Community Bank has never stopped lending.” TRCB has attracted to its client roster some marquee names in Monmouth County that have left other banks. “I think we’re doing a better job, and people have come to know us as being the value that we are,” he says. “You need to make the right decisions for your business and for your personal finances. We’re part of the team that helps customers make those right decisions.”

BIG SHOW

K

ATHRYN BATEMAN, AN AGENT AT THE HERITAGE HOUSE SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY OFFICE IN

RUMSON, IS AT THE LAWYER’S OFFICE FOR A CLOSING. SHE TEXTS HER CLIENT: “WE GOT A BIRDIE ON THE 18TH!” THE REPLY COMES BACK: “YOU GOT AN EAGLE!” THE SALE WAS FOR A $4,450,000 HOUSE IN COLTS NECK, THE LARGEST THERE TO DATE. BUT IT WASN’T YOUR ORDINARY TRANSACTION: NOT THE HOUSE, NOT THE SELLER, NOT ANYTHING. AND THE NEXT THING KATHRYN KNEW, SHE AND THE HOUSE WERE THE PREMIER PRIME-TIME FEATURE ON BILLION DOLLAR BLOCK AIRING OCTOBER 19 ON THE HGTV TELEVISION NETWORK.

Working together as a team, (l. to r.): Kathleen Karlen Donnelly (owner, Beauregard Fine Art, Rumson), Joyce Wopat (broker/manager, Heritage House SIR), artist Cindy Barham (owner, The River Ave Atelier, Monmouth Beach) and Kathryn Bateman (sales assoiate, Heritage House SIR)

In a way, the text messages—golf metaphors and all—sum up a relationship forged between Kathryn and seller, Lance Primis, that began when the house was listed in September 2010, and strengthened over the 14-month period preceding its sale. By that time, Kathryn was intimate with every inch of the Northern Italian Villa. It was conceptualized by Lance and his wife, Ellen, along with their architect, and driven by the New Jersey couple’s love for Italy. An award-winning top producer at her office, Kathryn’s professionalism was not lost on the TV people who had seen the house photos and YouTube site Kathryn had prepared. "When we contacted [her] to get background information about the Villa, we learned that she had represented both the original owners, as well as the most recent buyers,” said Diane DeStefano, co-executive producer of the show. “Because we were so impressed by her detailed knowledge and passion for this property, we asked that she be the one to do the on-camera tour, and we're thrilled with the outcome!"

The show segment may not have happened at all if Lance hadn’t found Kathryn in the first place. As Joyce Wopat, the broker/sales person and branch manager at Heritage House in Rumson recalls, Lance had called area real estate offices, asking to speak with the broker/manager or owner about the sale of his home. He left a message for Joyce at Heritage House, saying that he was looking for someone with talent, someone who believed in a number that had not been seen in the Colts Neck area. “It was a rare type of message and one that struck a chord, since most sellers say simply, ‘I want to sell my house,’” she explains. Kathryn, a Connecticut native who relocated to Rumson six years ago, picks up the story: “So he called various broker/managers, and, because I was on the desk, on the floor—the agents rotate, and it was my turn—it fell to me. It could have been anyone sitting at the front desk—a chance to get a $4 million listing!” When Kathryn and Joyce drove out to Colts Neck to meet their prospect, they learned that Lance began his career in the circulation department at The New York Times, and worked his way up to the position of president. “A successful businessman, father, just a well-spoken, great, laid-back good guy, a real gentleman,” says Kathryn...and an avid golfer. The chemistry that drew them together, Joyce maintains, was a shared interest in sports. Kathryn played Division II soccer at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. “She still plays it in her head all the time,” Joyce jokes—and she remains active in other sports as well, including golf. “It was the way he thought,” says Kathryn, expounding upon the essence of her collaborative effort with Lance. “That athletic mentality of working together, as a team. Strategizing. Moving the pieces together to reach the number that he wanted and move on.”

(Left) Kathryn Bateman (sales Associate, Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty) and Taniya Mayak (host, HGTV Billion Dollar Block).

The house sold to Drs. Zi Shan and Li Xiao Hong from Brooklyn, who had never been to Italy, but loved the Villa. The sale included most furnishings, but not the paintings—critical for the full-day HGTV television shoot—and the Chinese couple was not yet fully moved in. Kathryn—who, prior to joining Heritage House had worked for Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors and Saks Fifth Avenue and had once owned a home-styling business—knew how to get a house camera-ready. She scrambled to enlist the aid of local artists to showcase their art work throughout the home. Lance and his wife had built five houses previously and Kathryn and Joyce created a marketing plan they deemed worthy for what would be the owner’s final real estate “ta-da!” When Lance gave Heritage House the go-ahead, Kathryn recounts, he told them: “I’m counting on you guys, you’re on my team; if we’re not getting activity, you need to push back on me.” And this, which Kathryn and Joyce took to heart: “Tell me the truth. Don’t razzle-dazzle me.” They didn’t. Though you might say they did—in critical other ways.

FIRE TO WARM YOU — INSIDE & OUT

S A LT C R E E K G R I L L E A s cool autumn breezes give way to cold, frosty nights, we are naturally drawn to fire. No wonder that Salt Creek Grille, Rumson, where fire takes center stage, is a popular winter destination.

by KAREN IRVINE for Salt Creek Grille

From the moment you drive up to the Craftsman-style building (that many say reminds them of a ski lodge) and step out of your car, the fragrance of wood smoke wafts in the air from the mesquite wood grill inside. Outside, toasty flames from an out door fire pit are ablaze year round, surrounded by comfortable, Shaker-style benches that give a warm welcome, and perfect spot to sip a hot beverage, protected from the chill. Inside, there is the open, theater-style kitchen with its flaming, authentic mesquite fired grill. The wood—shipped monthly from Texas where mesquite is considered a weed—is stored in a barn nearby and brought to the restaurant as needed. The mesquite is favored for cooking since it creates an even, hot bed of coals while imparting a subtle savory flavor. The specially-designed Scandinavian grill costs $17,000 and has been replaced three times since the Salt Creek Grille opened in 1998—a commitment to a cooking technique that continues to deliver a delicious dining experience. Executive Chef Bob Belt and his staff must start the grill every day at 2pm to ensure that, by 5pm, the grill and coals are hot enough to cook meats, fish and vegetables in a flash—perfect for Salt Creek Grille’s new menu that focuses on fresh, seasonal and local ingredients. It takes considerable skill for the grill chef to cook on top of this finicky surface with its many hot spots. A powerful exhaust hood draws the smoke out, wafting the wood aroma into the chilly air outside. So if you are looking for a unique dining experience, Sunday brunch, or site for your next event, visit Salt Creek Grille with its panoramic views of the Navesink waterfront and blazing fires to warm you, inside and out.

UVOO L

A MOST “PLEASANT PLACE” TO EAT

ike clockwork, each manager, before closing, phones Richard Bahadurian with a status report, usually between 11 and 12pm. But the boss does not go home; rather, he puts in another two or three hours of work, in the office at one of his restaurants, where it’s quiet and conducive to accomplishment. With the restaurants shuttered for the night, he eventually retires to sleep a bit, only to get up and return to one of his businesses.

In Fair Haven, Richard owns the Nauvoo Grill Club, the Raven & the Peach, The Raven Tea Room and Fair Haven Commons, the building that houses the two Ravens. Soon he’ll open the all-day breakfast Blue Peach Café Fair Haven (770 River Road), a distant cousin of the Blue Peach Café he owns in Wall Township and the Peach Tree Restaurant that he’s rebuilding there. Richard grew up on the Jersey shore. As a young man, he enjoyed frequenting some of the restaurants “up north.” One of his favorites was called Lock, Stock, and Barrel. Years and restaurant deals later, after numerous iterations and extensive alterations, Lock, Stock and Barrel is the present day Nauvoo Grill Club. When he acquired Nauvoo—which means “pleasant place”—it was called the Sun Tavern (and before that the Varsity Club, Lock, Stock, and Barrel, Atlantic Hotel, and, originally, the Bennett Hotel, which opened circa1864). The building had been last been remodeled in the late 1960s.

“We had a hodgepodge of additions we tried to transform into one design,” he explains. Transform they did—huge fireplaces, glowing lamps, earth-toned accessories, over-stuffed leather seating, over 400 custom-designed windows, a new outdoor patio recently added—while adhering to an all-American look that includes Remington-influenced art and ample use of American walnut and Tennessee stone. Frank Lloyd Wright, whom Richard greatly admires, decidedly influences the choice of mission style architecture. Using his own core crew of builders and craftsmen, the renovation took several years. “We rebuilt every inch of it,” he says of the latter, “right down to the skeleton.“ As a restaurateur, Richard is as exacting as he is enthusiastic about food. The menu at Nauvoo Grill Club is new American cuisine with a Southwestern influence. Richard tells his staff that great is not good enough. He adheres to the dictum that you can’t make a great meal with cheap ingredients. Nonetheless, he tries to keep Nauvoo’s entrees under $20—a nod to the current economy—which helps to fill the 100-plus first-floor seats. Upstairs are rooms used for private banquets and special business events. On the menu, according to a diner writing on TripAdvisor.com, is “The best French onion soup on the planet.”
