BRIDES In

2010, Red Bank RiverCenter said “I do” to putting the Red Bank Wedding Walk on its burgeoning special events calendar. Five Wedding Walks later, the International Downtown Association 2014 Best Practices Award for Events & Promotions went to Red Bank for the day that has become a marriage-made-in-heaven for the hundreds of brides-and-grooms-to-be who have March 22, 2015 circled on their calendars for the biggest Wedding Walk ever. The free, festive, one-day event is primed for fun and serious shopping for everything from engagement rings and bachelorette parties to champagne cocktails and honeymoon suites. 2015 RED BANK WEDDING WALK

Weddings

Continued from page 13

The day begins at 10am with a continental breakfast and sign-in at The Oyster Point Hotel where maps are available for a self-guided tour to participating businesses and a trolley and limos for transportation downtown. The day planner offers dozens of stops— bakeries, bridal gowns, entertainment, fashions, accessories, florists, jewelers, invitations, personal services, photographers, venues and transportations, wedding-day wares and services. A reception at 4pm in the elegant atmosphere of The Molly Pitcher Inn is the highlight of the day where music, food, and Grand Prize raffles await. Thousands of dollars of wedding-related packages from Red Bank businesses are given away to lucky winners. “Wedding Walk shines a spotlight on wedding related businesses,” says James Scavone, Executive Director of Red Bank RiverCenter that is responsible for the event, along with the Red Bank Visitors Center and event sponsors. “Anyone getting married can plan—and have— a fabulous wedding in Red Bank. We have everything right here, every step of the way.”

heresa Hartman of Fair Haven came to Red Bank Wedding Walk 2013 looking for a gown and came away winning one in the Grand Prize raffle. If that wasn’t enough, there’s more. The raffle spinner cage—borrowed by RiverCenter from the Fair Haven First Aid Squad—that spun her winning ticket was built by her grandfather, Lou Hartman. But the real magic was on her wedding day when she married Evan Pearman on May 23, 2014 in her Theresa Hartman Wedding Walk gown from Sassy Chic Boutique.

SECTION RED BANK by TOM CHESEK

Even Better Than the Real Thing It’s a time-tunnel wormhole that extends from the 1950s, when a couple of fresh-faced, polite young guys from the rural sunbelt turned popular music on its ear—to the early 1960s, when a quartet of Liverpudlian lads heralded an invasion that would rechart the course of popular American culture. It runs through the psychedelic Summer of Love; past swinging London pads and upstate New York farmlands— on into the age of FM rock, and right up to the moment when video took aim at the radio star. Here in winter 2015, the Count Basie Theatre turns out to be a hotbed of activity for a collection of the most hallowed names in classic rock history—as channeled by some of the most in-demand tribute acts on the nationwide touring circuit. A cut above the bar-band cover scene—and light years beyond the earnest solo performer in the corner of the tavern—these returning favorites are theater-scale attractions in themselves; veteran pros fronting big (sometimes spectacular) shows, making generations of their own fans, and keeping the music alive and kicking even when death, dotage or diminishing energies have sidelined the original artists. ELVIS BIRTHDAY BASH with Mike Albert and Scot Bruce/January 16, 8pm Once upon a time, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi joked of forming a two-pronged salute to the King of Rock and Roll known as The Elvii—but when Scot Bruce and Mike Albert return to the Basie for their annual tribute to Elvis Presley, they’ll be seriously presenting this crowd-pleasing perennial for the tenth consecutive year. The two veteran entertainers (both of whom maintain busy careers on their own) team up once more for a winning formula that finds Bruce opening with a hip-shaking evocation of the early-days “Pelvis”—followed by Albert’s spot-on embodiment of the 1970s King, right Continued on page 22 RED HOT MAGAZINE We Love Local

down to the rhinestoned jumpsuits, championship belts, oversized shades and jet-black helmet of lacquered hair. It’s a welcoming whistlestop in what Scot Bruce calls “a beautiful town…the King is alive and well around Red Bank.” THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY Live On Stage/January 25, 7 pm When Elvis first took his radical new look and sound out on the road, a camera-toting young Buddy Holly was there—observing, recording, and being inspired to make his own unique contribution to the music of the 1950s. Before his death in a February 1959 plane crash, the bespectacled kid from Lubbock, Texas crafted a small but significant body of heartbreakingly personal songs (“Rave On,” “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue” and more) that have really stood the test of time—as has “Buddy,” a jukebox musical that was first produced in the UK 25 years ago, and that comes to Red Bank for the first time. An onstage band of actor-musicians portray Buddy and the people in his life—including Ritchie Valens (“La Bamba”) and The Big Bopper (“Chantilly Lace”), who also met their untimely end on “the day the music died”—in this hit show that follows Holly from Nashville to New York’s Apollo Theatre, climaxing with a recreation of the final Winter Dance Party date in Iowa. RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles/February 22, 3 pm Since The Beatles first touched tarmac on their way to the Ed Sullivan Show, the greater New York area has had a special fondness for the Fab Four—and more than fifty years later, the region doesn’t lack for top-shelf Beatle tributes. That said, perhaps only RAIN constantly works in new material—and with nine songs recently introduced to the set for the first time (including “She Loves You” and “Here Comes the Sun”), this fully costumed, multi-media tour of the legendary band’s brief but brilliant history is worth an encore look. From the cheerful chirp of early hits like “I Want To Hold Your Hand” to the studio sturm-and-drang of “Sgt. Pepper” and beyond, this touring version of the Broadway production has it covered. PINK FLOYD EXPERIENCE: 4 Sides of Floyd/February 27, 8pm According to Canadian-based guitarist-bandleader Tom Quinn, “PFX” is not an “impostor show” tribute to the trippy prog pioneer foursome—there are six musicians on stage for one thing, none of them impersonating the late Floyd founder Syd Barrett—and with some $2.5 million of equipment on stage, the program known as “4 Sides of Floyd” is an experience that competes head-on with the original band in its classic-rock heyday. Performing one complete album side from each of four Floydian masterworks (“Dark Side of the Moon,” “Wish You Were Here,” “Animals,” “The Wall”)—and encoring with a set of greatest hits that include “Money” and “Comfortably Numb”—the Experience deliver the flying pigs and more, augmented by a spectacular light show (“the likes of which haven’t been seen since the halcyon days of the major record labels”) and, naturally, quadraphonic sound. ONE NIGHT OF QUEEN/March 3, 8pm It was fourteen years ago that singer Gary Mullen took the top place in the British TV talent competition “Stars in Their Eyes,” with a spot-on impersonation of the late and legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury— but rather than focus on a micro-managed solo career, he instead formed what would become the world’s most popular Queen tribute band. Having performed huge sold-out concerts on several continents, Gary Mullen and The Works bring their “One Night of Queen” extravaganza back to the Count for a set that boasts spot-on recreations of the band’s signature rockers (”Stone Cold Crazy”), anthems (“We Will Rock You”), epics (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and more—with a savvy sense of musicianship and showmanship. Glen Burtnik’s SUMMER OF LOVE V/March 14, 8pm With a resume that boasts a long run as Paul in Broadway’s Beatlemania, as well as stints with Styx and the 21st century version of ELO, Shore-based Glen Burtnik is a classic rock star in his own right—but even as a hit songwriter and solo artist, there’s nothing he’d rather do more than lead a hand-picked band of local allstars in a “tribute to the music of the Woodstock Generation, performed note for note and absolutely live.” For the 5th anniversary edition of the Summer of Love concert, Burtnik and bandmates focus on the pivotal year of 1967, and the artists who changed the world—from The Beatles, Hendrix, The Doors and Cream, to The Beach Boys, Donovan, and Jefferson Airplane—on to the decade-ending signature songs of Santana, The Rascals, Creedence, Janis Joplin, Arlo Guthrie and Crosby Stills Nash and Young. All this, plus Marc Rubinstein’s legendary “Pig Light Show,” the original display from NYC’s Fillmore East.

Full details and ticket reservations on these and other Count Basie events—including May 2015 appearances by Get the Led Out: The American Led Zeppelin, and Pat Guadagno’s annual Dylan birthday salute Bobfest—can be found at countbasietheatre.org.

DEDICATION | The Cheryl L. Diamond Cancer Care Pavilion

Mary Pat An gelini/Asse mblywoman , and Phil Vi llapiano

A pledge of $2.5 million to establish the Cheryl L. Diamond Cancer Care Pavilion at the Leon Hess Cancer Center at Monmouth Medical Center is the meaningful way Warren Diamond and his son, Scott, chose to honor a beloved wife and mother, and express their gratitude for the care she received during her seven year battle with breast cancer. The dedication ceremonies of the Pavilion on December 11 marked the occasion of the gift to the community, as well as a personal family milestone.

Carolyn Napier turns back the clock at Vintage Variety.

RH1_15_PGS30_39:Layout 1 1/7/15 9:39 PM Page 31

S E C T I O N AT L A N T I C H I G H L A N D S by CORT SMITH einz Ketchup’s much hyped “57 Varieties” have nothing over what’s in store at the Vintage Variety Shop. Need authentic clothing from, say, the 1930s for that period party or photo shoot? Right this way. Old 45-RPM records? On that shelf next to the vintage toys. How about some cool T-shirts once worn by Don Jamieson of VH1’s That Metal Show? Got ’em. Belts and buckles, band-tour T’s, home décor, rare magazines, unusual gift items? You bet. And let’s not forget the unique tour jacket (worn only by record company execs) from Bon Jovi’s 1986 Slippery When Wet concert tour. Vintage Variety owner Meredith Peltz didn’t actually say that variety was the spice of life, but her shop has been just that for her many loyal local customers and visitors from New York City and elsewhere. It wasn’t always that way: the variety, the volume, the community involvement, the specialty vintage niche. For more than 17 years, Meredith worked as a retail manager for stores including Sears and Macy’s and a host of smaller retailers while she shared a house in the area with her sister, Melanie, who in July of 2004 asked Meredith if she would like to open a store. Meredith, by her own admission, had “an awful lot of stuff.” Six months later, they had their own shop on First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands. The reason it has survived for more than a decade is because Meredith knows retail from years of experience. The idea for “vintage,” however, came about by chance.

AnthrA xx Lette

On her way to work one day early in her entrepreneurial life, Meredith passed a yard sale. Most of the items there were old. “But I bought a bunch of things and they sold like crazy to all the New Yorkers who were coming down to the Sandy Hook beaches,” she recalls. It wasn’t long before the majority of the shop’s items were vintage authentic. Today, her store is Monmouth County’s largest source for men and women’s vintage clothing, according to Meredith, featuring thousands of pieces from the 1930’s through the 1990’s...and new items added daily. It’s important to Meredith that people trust her to be knowledgeable. “You could walk out looking kind of crazy, because some of the styles are a little outrageous,” she explains. “But most of our inventory is ‘everyday’ wearable.” Her know-how is especially important with professionals (some of her customers are wardrobers for films, theater and television) who are planning a photo shoot or are involved in a film or play. “I know what’s what in a given era, and believe me, every little detail makes a big difference,” she says. “My customers count on me.” At her price point, renting out inventory items is not a viable option. The majority of vintage dresses, for example, run, on average, from $16 to $40. Old records range from $8 to $19, with the occasional $2 steal. That Bon Jovi tour jacket, at $275, is currently the most expensive item in the shop, except for a piece of art selling on consignment for $1,800. For those on a tight budget, there are items that cost 25 cents. “Every little kid who’s walking the Avenue can find something in the store,” she notes. Although Meredith’s sister no longer works at Vintage Variety, Meredith has, nearly from the start, been assisted by Samantha, a “personality” who works with several bands and goes by the name AnthrAxx Lette. Also helping out is another friend, crochet artist Susan Bulavinetz of Beckoning Yarn, who sells her items in the store. Lisa Walling is the in-house Tarot Card reader, working out of space on the shop’s second floor. Then there’s Tommy Stratton, a retired Highlands policeman who’s been collecting toys since he was a child; Tommy runs a section of the shop called Little Tommy’s Toy Box, where he sells mostly vintage toys, specializing in G.I. Joes, Star Wars, Star Trek, and other icons from the 1960s. But not everything at Vintage is old. Available are new jewellery, accessories, recycled clothing, stageware for musicians, housewares, home décor, original art work by area artists and more. In past years, the shop was host to live bands and pot luck dinner parties. These are two traditions that Meredith plans to revive, all in keeping with the notion of variety. “We really grew into the name,” she says laughing. These activities, along with hanging local art, selling local-made product, promoting local bands, and providing selective vintage and recycled merchandise are, as Meredith sees it, all about community. “Small helps small,” is how she puts it, with pride.

HIGHLANDS by APRIL W. KLIMLEY

Bay Avenue Wishing Gazebo

CREATIVE HIGHLANDS A FRESH NEW ARTS SCENE IN BLOOM

Innovation in the arts is blossoming in the Highlands, planted as an initiative by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and cultivated by the newly formed Highlands Borough Arts Council (HBCA). Aimed at uniting residents to actively participate in rebuilding their town after Superstorm Sandy, the original organizers were part of the Hurricane Sandy Recovery Committee. By Kathleen Ligon

HBAC, which officially started work in January 2014, has sponsored over 15 arts events in its first year, co-hosted and using venues provided by Highlands businesses, residents, and local government. The Council promotes an expansive definition of the arts—painting, sculpture, film, art happenings, cultural events, and more. A core group of volunteer organizers—and more volunteers are always welcome—includes Maureen Welch (event programming), furniture-maker Arnie Fuog (community outreach), singer/songwriter Maureen McCrink (treasurer), and Lois Bajor (director). As Maureen explains, “Art is something that crosses all boundaries and includes all interest groups—political and social. We look at the arts as something that brings people together and creates a sort of connective tissue.”

Creative programming encourages community participation and gives rise to one-of-akind events like “Throw Your Cares to the Wind” held on June 21 to celebrate the Summer Solstice. Residents were invited to put notes with their wishes, concerns, hopes or dreams in glass containers to be hung from the Bay Avenue Wishing Gazebo (92-98 Bay Avenue) By Stacey Pritchard as a public art installation. “The Sketch Crawl” in October—part of an international event (sketchcrawl.com)—was a three-hour drawing spree around town that wound up at the Bay Avenue Bakery & Cafe (111 Bay Avenue) as an improvised gallery where participants displayed their sketches. In November, a festive “Holiday Artisan Fair” at Francesco’s Italian Restaurant (279 Bay Avenue) was a showcase for local artisans to display and sell their handcrafted items. “Pop-On” galleries have created new exhibition spaces in town, thanks to HBAC. Valerie McLaughlin’s Water Witch Coffee & Tea Company (67 Water Witch Avenue) was the first to host a show of the artwork by painter Stacey Pritchard, and continues to be an arts destination offering song writer and open mic nights, as well as art openings and exhibits. Chef William Nassar’s new bistro, FRESH (144 Bay Avenue), was the Pop-On Gallery for works by Highlands resident and fine artist Gerda Liebmann. In December, HBAC launched a series of bi-monthly FilmNITES with screenings in a newly renovated space at Bahr’s Landing Restaurant (2 Bay Avenue). John Schneider kicked off the series with his video footage of the Jersey Bayshore. By harnessing the creative energy and talent of artists, the Highlands Borough Arts Council looks to bring together residents and business owners to build a stronger community. “We have a very broad definition of the arts,“ says Maureen Welch. “If you are an artist,” she adds, “We will help you realize your idea. But you have to be part of the team!”

2015 Tips for Getting Tuned In to Your Health in the New Year

by TRIA DEIBERT for Riverview Medical Center

O

n any given day, there are a million priorities. Amidst the daily hustle and bustle, it’s easy to lose sight of taking care of ourselves. But there are some easy ways to make sure your health and well-being make it to your “to-do” list.

We asked Robert Penney, M.D., a board certified OB/GYN affiliated with Riverview Medical Center, to share his advice and tips on how can get tuned in to your health this New Year.

Find a doctor with weekend and evening hours. Between soccer practice, work, school and the many places we go each day, finding time for a doctor’s appointment can be a challenge. “When I talk to my patients I find they have very challenging schedules, says Dr. Penney, “and, in many cases, their only availability is not during traditional office hours. So we offer extended weekday and weekend hours to accommodate their schedule. TIP: Check with your doctor’s office to find out if they offer extended or weekend hours. Many of us do!

Pick a specific date for your mammogram and stick to it. “For women ages 40 and older, annual mammograms can detect breast cancer at its earliest stages, when it is most treatable,” says Dr. Penney. “I encourage my patients to schedule their mammogram around a significant date or time of year— their birthday, Mother’s Day, or an anniversary—so they don’t forget!” TIP: Sign up for Meridian Health’s Mammogram Reminder at MeridianHealth.com/Mammo so you never miss your mammogram.

Exercise 30 minutes each day. According to Dr. Penney, “Exercising as little as 30 minutes a day can have huge benefits for your health by reducing your risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke. Physical activity also helps with weight control, as well as maintaining healthy bones, muscles, and joints.” TIP: Keep yourself motivated by joining a fitness related event like a 5K run, a charity bike ride, or walkathon. A clearly defined goal will give you something you can work towards and eventually accomplish.

Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. “Although sleep needs vary from person to person, most healthy adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night,” Dr. Penney recommends. “When you don’t get enough sleep, daily life can become more stressful and less productive and, in the long-term, can lead to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and depression.” TIP: If you’re having trouble sleeping, try turning off all your electronics 90 minutes before you go to bed. The light emitted by electronic devices can trick your body into thinking it is daytime, hampering your body’s ability to fall asleep naturally. 36

Sagittarius; and the astrological symbol for Saturn (below)

Heads Above Water

by ALICE LOFFREDO

SATURN SEGUES INTO SAGITTARIUS December 24, 2014 – December 20, 2017

Expect the “vibe” of the times to become action-oriented. It’s time to get going!

W

henever any of the slow-moving outer planets changes signs it’s big astrological news because its evolving energies influence us not only personally, but societally and globally as well. For the past several years, we’ve all been swimming in deep, dark waters because three of those outer planets—Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune—have been passing through all of the water signs. Neptune started the trend in 2011 by entering Pisces, a particularly strong combination because spiritual, visionary, “go with the flow” Pisces is the sign associated with that planet. Then, in October 2012, on the eve of Hurricane Sandy, Saturn moved into powerful Scorpio, a sign whose energies can heal the deepest wounds of body, mind and spirit, bring order out of chaos, and help us transform into our highest evolutionary potential, but rarely offers smooth passage through the process. Finally, in July of 2013, Jupiter entered sensitive, nurturing, subjective Cancer, activating and expanding the qualities of the third water sign. We can all look back over these recent years to see how all this watery energy has affected us not only personally, but also nationally, environmentally, and globally. We started swimming up from the deep this past July when Jupiter moved into fiery, confident, optimistic Leo. In December, we take another giant step towards the surface when Saturn enters Sagittarius (December 24, 2014–December 20, 2017), another fire sign that shares Leo’s action-oriented optimism, and confidence, and adds dimensions of non-judgmental tolerance, a strong sense of justice and a desire to spread the word about what it believes and knows. This is an especially significant passage for Saturn, because one of its key roles is to be our astrological teacher, and Sagittarius is the sign of the “higher mind,” the intelligence that takes information and fashions it into patterns of meaning in disciplines such as philosophy, law, higher education and religion. Saturn demands discipline, hard work, and the achievement of tangible results, so we can use these energies to learn more about our world and our own place in it (Sagittarius) and work to establish and secure firmer foundations (Saturn) in the areas of equality and justice (Sagittarius), both close to home and farther afield. Which brings me to another Sagittarian theme: travel. With Saturn in this sign, we are urged to travel far and wide (literally or metaphorically, through reading or workshops, for example) to learn about how other cultures and societies operate, and use that insight to create new opportunities for mutual understanding and growth. With both Jupiter and Saturn now in fire signs, we can expect the “vibe” of the times to become more energetic and actionoriented. It’s time to open the next page of the astrological teacher’s curriculum and get going.

All About Animals by CJ ANSORGE

Kate Grady Stained Glass:

THE FINE ART OF ANIMALS “My love of animals borders on insanity,” artist Kate Grady is the first to admit. A visit to her stained glass studio in Middletown might just happily confirm her diagnosis. Her atelier is a beautifully crafted workspace in a bucolic setting with a chicken coop in the backyard (home to four rescued hens and one rooster), a field full of horses next door, Spec her cat upstairs carried back from Taiwan, a dog named Lemmy on premises, and animal images resplendent in stained glass pieces created by Kate. Although certified as a veterinary assistant, it is Kate’s artistic work that expresses her love of animals for all to share. While her background in liturgical restoration and private residential and commercial commissions provide the framework for her life as a stained glass artist, Kate finds a special joy in the hand-made, hand-painted fused glass pieces she creates with animals as subjects. The exacting stained glass technique fuses brilliant color fields of glass, kiln-fired at 1350 to1500 degrees. Starting from a photograph or drawing, Kate literally paints with finely ground colored glass to produce her one-of-a-kind portraits of beloved dogs, cats, roosters, horses, birds...creatures great and small. It is an amazing menagerie to behold. Recently, Kate returned to Taiwan to drink tea at the Cats Got Nothin’ to Do Cafe and leave a piece of fur to rest on Cat Mountain. It belonged to Face, one of two stray cats she had rescued years ago and brought home from Taiwan to live with her in New Jersey. And it’s that kind of good “insanity” that’s behind the masterpieces you can find at Kate Grady Stained Glass where you’re invited to go a little “crazy” yourself.
