A REAL GEM
If you haven’t found your way to Marie Santo’s studio and showroom (ML Design, 210 West Front Street/Suite 202), it’s time to put a visit on your Red Bank WestSide discovery list. Marie is a jewelry designer and her workshop is off the beaten path, up the stairs, in an attractive, but tiny, loft above her husband’s dental practice—Michael J. Santo, dds. But space limitations quickly fall away once you see the expansiveness of Marie’s creative world. Citrine, amethyst, turquoise, slices of agate, gemstones from India, silver beads from Bali, pearls from China…working with semi-precious gemstones, fresh water pearls, and precious metals, she designs opulent, radiant jewelry inspired by nature—exotic, sensuous, organic pieces of wearable art, “handcrafted adornments from earth and sea” that are priceless and priced right. mldesignsllc.net

FREE-FOR-ELLE
For three days in March, Glen Goldbaum’s Lambs & Wolves Den of Beauty, 66D Bridge Avenue, turned into a movie set, an art happening, and a big blank canvas for Elle—the artist whose vibrant, thought-provoking street art adorns public spaces all over the world…and the entire floor space of Glen’s salon where he’s commissioned a new Elle original now on permanent display. But that’s just for starters. For Glen, the sparks keep firing on ways to light up his beloved WestSide Red Bank neighborhood. Local filmmaker Kyle Mumford shot the Elle art happening (“A film about a girl painting”) and nearfuture screenings are already being planned, indoors and outside. (Glen is talking about projecting on the side Glen Goldbaum of the iconic Anderson Kyle Mumford Building at the corner is a female graffiti and street artist based of Bridge Avenue and in Brooklyn, noteworthy for her use of Monmouth Street.) Then there are diverse mediums and tools on the street spaces and places—big and including, but not limited to; small—for Elle art out in the fire extinguishers, rollers, streets…and art openings… aerosol, markers, acrylic and and outdoor events… “I silkscreens to create a variety want to play,” says Glen of tags, fills, murals, wheatpastes, sculptures, and bus gleefully. “The more we shelter AD replacements. do stuff that’s alive and She has scaled and painted moving and colorful and billboards along the Brooklyn creative, the more people Queens Expressway freeway, come out and we installed a piece in the Urban all have a good Nation Museum in Berlin, time.” and had a 200 foot video

I’m IMPORTANT As a Mom, I play many roles. I am the chauffeur, errand-runner, chef, and costume-maker to three daughters. Making sure my girls have everything they need leaves little time to take care of myself. But when it comes to getting my mammogram, I make it happen! I go to the Women’s Center at Riverview. Even though life as a mom on-the-go can get hectic, my children are everything to me, and I know I mean the world to them. So, with all the available technology and the knowledge that early detection is my best defense against breast cancer, why wouldn’t I make time for my annual mammogram? I am a mom. I am a leader. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305. RED BANK RIVERCENTER SUPPORTS PAINT THE TOWN PINK
For nine years, Red Bank businesses have turned pink during the month of May to support annual mammography. This year, Red Bank RiverCenter is challenging those businesses to become pinker than ever before, by offering a $500 advertising credit to the Pinkest Business within the RiverCenter district. The businesses will be judged based on their window designs, creativity with pink promotions, and support of Paint the Town Pink’s mission.
Please e-mail photos and descriptions of your business’ Pink activities to RedBankRiverCenter@gmail.com.

8 THINGS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THEIR BREAST HEALTH by DONNA SELLMANN for Meridian Health
PAINT THE TOWN PINK 2015
T
he thought of having breast cancer is frightening. But, ignoring the possibility that you may develop breast cancer or avoiding the processes to detect cancer, can be dangerous. According to Debra Camal, M.D., breast surgeon and medical director for the breast program for Meridian Cancer Care, “Early detection, a skilled team and a positive attitude provides the greatest possibility of successful treatment.”
Debra Camal, M.D.
Dr. Camal clarifies some of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to breast health.
1. If cancer doesn’t run in my family, then I don’t have to worry. The fact is that all women are at risk for breast cancer. Self-breast exams are important for all women, and you should get a baseline mammogram at age 35, and then annually at age 40. If there is family history of premenopausal breast cancer (in close relatives on either side of the family), then start your baseline 10 years before their age of diagnosis. Comparison of the images from year to year is essential for your doctor to detect changes over time.
2. I should only rely on my doctor’s visit for my breast health. If you notice any changes in your breast or feel an abnormality, always see your physician. Any nipple discharge (especially bloody or clear) should be checked out right away. Discomfort or pain in the breast should also be investigated.
3. All mammograms hurt. Yes, having a mammogram is uncomfortable, but it varies with your tolerance for pain. Pressure is necessary to get a good image, and the flatter the better.
For instance, think of a ball of clay with a seed under it. If you roll it out thin, the seed will eventually be visible as a bump.
4. Mammography is the only tool to diagnose breast cancer. Mammography is the only universally accepted screening tool to detect abnormalities, but technology such as ultrasound can complement diagnosis. 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, is the newest type of mammogram designed to look through dense breast tissue and minimize the need for unnecessary biopsies. In certain cases, a MRI can be used to help your physician make a better diagnosis.
5. An occasional self-breast exam in the shower is sufficient. It’s important to know your body and conduct a self-breast exam monthly in order to detect changes in your breasts and potentially benign lumps, regardless of your age. Your breast should be as flat as possible to feel all tissues, so lying down, with one arm over your head is the best position for a self-exam. If any lump is detected, it should be reported to your doctor. Any additional breast changes not resolved in a short period of time should also be reported and checked by your physician.
6. All imaging centers are the same. The saying “practice makes perfect” is a good one to apply when choosing a location to have a mammogram. Your best bet is to select a facility that has a fellowship-trained breast radiologist, which means that he/she has advanced training in reading mammograms and identifying potential problems. Also, comprehensive breast centers usually offer all of the testing needed to evaluate an abnormality, including ultrasound, MRI, and image-guided needle biopsy when necessary.
MAY 1–31
PINKY SWEAR TO GET YOUR MAMMOGRAM
For nine years, Paint the Town Pink has encouraged women to get their annual mammogram. This year, we invite you to join Meridian Health as we attempt to break the Guinness World Record® for the longest pinky swear chain to further our mission to raise awareness of annual mammography. Visit PaintTheTownPink.com or call 855-PINK-411 to find out how you can participate in this unique event. Pinky swear you will be there!
7. All breast lumps are cancerous. First, don’t jump to conclusions. Many lumps are not cancer, but instead cysts, benign nodules, or dense breast tissue. Second, don’t delay seeing your doctor to determine what is going on. A mammogram can help identify a mass or calcifications and determine the need for further investigation.
8. If I am diagnosed with cancer, I will lose my breast. This is usually not the case. A lumpectomy (removal of the lump) followed by radiation is often an option. In some cases, even large lumps can be reduced in size prior to surgery to allow for breast conservation. Promptly explore all your options and make an educated decision with your physician. “A mammogram is a great tool in the fight against breast cancer,” says Dr. Camal. “The technology is tremendous and can detect breast cancer before lumps can be felt or symptoms appear. Early detection of breast cancer not only helps provide a woman with more options, but also increases her chances of having the best possible outcome.”

PEOPLE BEHIND PINK F
or nine years, Paint the Town Pink has encouraged women in Monmouth and Ocean counties to get their annual mammogram. How has something that began as a week-long event in one town grown to a month-long event in more than 35 towns? The simple answer— passionate people. In the beginning of the year, hundreds of volunteers come together to support one common cause—annual mammography. Led by a town chairperson, volunteers form into committees that strategize plans for how they want to Pink their town in May.
by RANDI RUSSELL for Meridian Health
PAINT THE TOWN
PINK 2015 MAY 1–31 Volunteer Here: Call 855-PINK-411 or visit PaintTheTownPink.com to learn more about how you can get involved and see a full list of events
Committees might encourage businesses to become “Pink Partners,” decorating their windows for the month of May or offering special promotions like discounted Pink manicures or specialty Pink cocktails. Or volunteers might organize a town event in May, like a Pink family-fun day or Zumbathon. When it comes to Pink, the possibilities are endless. “I have participated in Paint the Town Pink for years, since Red Bank was the first town to become Pink nine years ago,” says Kris Rovell, town chair for Red Bank. “It’s amazing to see the businesses come together to support the same mission. When Broad Street is lined with pink windows, you have to believe that some woman walking down the street is reminded to get her mammogram. And that’s the real reason why we put so much time into painting our towns pink.” For new volunteers and towns, the Paint the Town Pink mission is exciting and inspiring. “Sea Bright is becoming ‘Sea Pink’ for the first year and we are thrilled to be part of the mission. I was so inspired by the enthusiasm of the towns who have been involved since the beginning,” says Liz Homer, town chair for Sea Bright. Every volunteer, every committee, and every town has a reason to be passionate about Pink. As volunteers help to spread the hue further every year, more and more women and men become educated about the importance of annual mammography, a test many women have credited as being life-saving.
M
ay is a welcomed month at the Jersey Shore, with warmer weather, beach days, and summer nights all in sight. In Monmouth and Ocean counties, May has also become synonymous with Paint the Town Pink, Meridian Health’s annual campaign to raise awareness of the importance of annual mammography. From rosy landscapes to pink storefronts and school buildings, Paint the Town Pink has made a visual and powerful impact in dozens of Monmouth and Ocean County towns over the past nine years. Because each participating town plans its own Pink events, there is a wide variety but Red Bank’s Girls Night Out at The Downtown remains a long-standing tradition.
NK TRADITION
Women gather their “breast friends” and head to the popular restaurant on West Front Street for a carefree evening of delicious food, specialty pink drinks, live music, and prizes, but a much deeper purpose lies beneath the surface. One hundred percent of the ticket sales goes directly to the Pink Fund—a local fund at each Meridian Health hospital—that provides mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women in the community. Tickets are $60 and, thanks to the generosity of The Downtown management, every cent goes to benefit a woman in need.
Since Girls Night Out began in 2008, The Downtown has donated its venue, menu, and services, all in the name of Pink.
By CAITLIN COYLE for Meridian Health
“It's safe to say that everyone has been affected, in one way or another, by cancer. It’s an epidemic,” says Kiera McElwain, events coordinator for The Downtown and red, its sister restaurant on Broad Street in Red Bank. “We are happy and proud to stand with Meridian in its efforts to bring awareness, funding, and support to this important event. The work that the team at Meridian does every year is epic.” In addition to The Downtown, many local businesses have gotten involved to help make Girls Night Out a success by donating items for door prizes and swag bags. Even entertainment has been donated throughout years, including the Mike Dalton Band, a Jersey Shore favorite. “After working with Meridian from year to year, we realized that Girls Night Out is just one way that this team strives to broaden its reach every year,“ say McElwain. “Donating this party to Paint the Town Pink is our small way of supporting their efforts. We look forward to the 2015 party, as well as many more in the years to come.“ RED HOT MAGAZINE We Love Local

Atlantic Highlands Arts Council A Very Cozy Corner on the Arts

rtists may work best alone, but then again, it can get lonely. Ask RJ Clawson, a 27-year-old painter who, after a seven-year stint with the Coast Guard, returned to his native Atlantic Highlands to put brush back on canvass. Before he left, RJ did not engage much in the borough’s art community; self taught, he worked alone, producing abstract acrylic paintings unlike, say, local landscapes, creating, as he explains, “the moments I feel and see, as I walk forward behind my mind.” But he was tired of working in a void and hopeful of joining others likeminded and eager to share. He found what he was looking for in the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council: a home for emerging artists like himself.
The Council’s mission is to strengthen community through the arts, explains Council President Maggi Moro, who is quick to point out that the mission statement does not read the community. “We’re not limited to what community, and we’re not limited by what arts are either.” As such, the Council and its inviting new headquarters at 135 First Avenue called The Arts Corner, serve musicians, film makers, photographers, performance artists, painters, writers—you name it—along with friends, family, and the casual passerby from down the block or far away. Robert O’Connor, a painter and print maker, moved to Atlantic Highlands in 2006 and feels very lucky to have landed here. Robert joined the Council as a board member and one of his first efforts was to launch, in 2009, the now hugely successful FilmOneFest which operates under the auspices of the Council. Held each July at the borough marina, FOF screens films of less than two minutes in length that are made by local and international film and video makers. Originally called the Mayor’s Arts Council, AHAC incorporated in 2008 as an autonomous non-profit committed to develop and execute events and arts-related activities, explains Maggi. Today, the Council—and its Programming Committee, under the leadership of chairperson Mary Rawlinson—offers a full creative calendar that includes exhibits, art classes, artist lectures, workshops, film screenings, concerts, author talks, festivals and more. Living Room Concerts are held in the homes of local residents. The Annual Sounds of the Highlands, Jr. Concert features talented youngsters between the ages of 7 and 16. The Eats and Arts Festival—on May 31 this year—brings Atlantic Highlands artists and restaurants together to showcase their respective creations. And don’t forget the Children’s Art Camp in the summer at the Free Mason’s Lodge. The Arts Corner building, a multifaceted center, serves as a gallery, boutique, and a place for exhibitions, workshops, classes, lectures, and the community to gather. At present, there are twelve board members, a mix of artists, educators, business leaders, and community organizers. The board spans all age groups and attracts as members artists like RJ who bring with them “a different energy,” says Robert O’Connor, and who have a forum now where “their kind of work is shown and celebrated.”
“You can’t wander far on First Avenue without walking into art.” Robert O’Connor, AHAC Member
“And the collaborative atmosphere that the council provides will be great with my art as far as developing it with the members that have been producing art for long periods of time. I definitely won’t feel so isolated.” says RJ, whose parents own Sea Sons, a photography and gift shop on First Avenue. “I believe there are professional artists here in Atlantic Highlands doing work, kind of quietly, but I think we’re pretty supportive of people who are just starting,” says Robert. “We could never compete with New York. We have to find our own identity. We’re small but vibrant and growing, giving a new kind of flavor to the town.”
Exhibit opening, Second Story Art Gallery 78 First Avenue, AH
While the future of the arts scene here can only look bright, there’s nothing wrong with the present. As RJ puts it, “It’s just so cool that there’s so many different types of art in town and that they all benefit the community in different ways. This is a great time to be in Atlantic Highlands.”

All About Animals U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Manuel J. Martinez
The Dogs of War Out in front of America’s troops, combat canines and their handlers lead the way onto the most dangerous battlefields in the world. The United States War Dogs Association, Inc. (USWDA) is a nonprofit organization of former and current U.S. military dog handlers and supporting members committed to promoting the long history of the military service dogs, establishing permanent war dog memorials, and educating the public about the invaluable service of these canines to our country. In January, the New Jersey based Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals, in association with USWDA and the general public, collected donations for U.S. military working dog teams in the Middle East.

Preparing boxes for shipment
The Foundation hosted a volunteer day at the Purr’n Pooch’s Training Hall (86 Gilbert Street West, Tinton Falls) for businesses, schools, organizations and individuals to write letters and pack the donations for shipment. More than 100 people participated and 1,324 pounds and 90 boxes of supplies were shipped overseas. Items accepted for the working dogs include K-9 products such as warming mats, boots, “doggles” (dog protective goggles), shampoo and conditioner, grooming tools, nail clippers, beds or sleeping mats, blankets, toothpaste and toothbrush, eye drops, ear wash, collapsible nylon dog bowls, Kong rubber balls and rope chews. Items accepted for the handlers include nonperishable food and drink items such as coffee and tea, lemonade and iced tea mixes, powdered Gatorade, instant foods, oatmeal, grits, Kraft Easy Mac, power bars, dried fruit and small canned foods.

Amazing Graces TEATIME AT OASIS FARM Tea Cakes by John Cleary
There are many fine reasons to go to Oasis Farm and support its mission as a Therapeutic Life Center (tlc) for autistic individuals, but its Social Graces Tea is reason enough to head there for a food experience all its own—and a heart-warming afternoon in the bargain. The setting is the elegant, light-filled Lafayette Ballroom in the 18th century farmhouse that is home to Oasis—its programs, volunteers, staff, students, residents and visitors. The afternoon tea menu is seasonal, farm fresh, homemade and, whenever possible, homegrown. Goat cheese, eggs, jams, jellies, breads, scones and more are all products of Oasis Farm and made with ingredients organic to the place. A greenhouse and gardens for fruits and vegetables…goats for milk and cheese…chickens for eggs… The seven acre farmstead gives ample opportunity for learning and vocational training in agriculture, the arts, and the environment, as well as plenty of good food for the table. With Social Graces, Oasis students are learning how to make and prepare foods, be hosts, wait tables, WEDNESDAYS | 3:00-4:30pm set up and clean up and, as with a (last seating at 4:30pm) culinary school restaurant, guests are MARCH 11 & 25 | part of the training. But there’s a special understanding that’s needed APRIL 8 & 22 | MAY 6 & 20 here that adds a sense of purpose and oasisfarm4@gmail.com for reservations participation in an important process. The bone china tea sets and tiered serving trays piled high with sandwiches, savories, sweets and pastries make for a lovely repast and beautiful presentation, but it is the life of this community that makes the afternoon shine and you are welcome to become part of the glow.
Social Graces Tea
Social Graces is the thoughtful expression of the Oasis Farm philosophy—to provide encounters between people that will foster positive human growth through nature and the acceptance of human differences. One bite into a freshly baked scone from the Oasis Farm kitchen at afternoon tea is just that kind of encounter—warm, joyful, and not to be missed. Reservations are requested and tables fill quickly. A suggested donation of $10 for smaller plates or $15 for larger plates is appreciated.

xcept for the Sun and the Moon, every planet in our solar system has times when, due to its elliptical pathway, it appears to slow down to a stop and start moving backward. (In truth, no planet ever literally moves in reverse.) During the period between this event and when it again stops and slips its cosmic gearshift into “Forward,” the planet is said to be retrograde and its energies are not being expressed as clearly and strongly as they are when it is moving forward. In a recent article in “The Mountain Astrologer,”* Kenneth Johnson uses the metaphor of an illness to illustrate the principle. When a planet goes retro, it’s like when you’re coming down with a bad cold: your strength and energy is slipping away, weakened by whatever microbe has breached your immune system. Then, there’s the day you wake up and know you’ve turned the corner (the planet has stopped and turned direct) and recuperation speeds forward (it’s covering the same terrain it backtracked over in retrograde motion, only now it is moving forward) until you’re “back in the pink” (the planet is now moving straight ahead over new zodiacal ground.) Down here on Planet Earth, we are particularly attuned to the directional comings and goings of versatile, communicative, quick-moving Mercury, who, in classical mythology, was the only god who travelled between Heaven, Earth, and Hell, delivering messages from one realm to the other. It’s no wonder that, in this digital age of ever-increasing communication frequency, urgency, and speed, when the winged messenger goes retro it’s big news. To quote Johnson, it can seem that “your right brain is where your left brain ought to be, and your left brain is nowhere at all.” Traditional advice for Mercury retrograde periods still holds up: Go inward. Try to postpone major decisions until the planet goes direct. Do “RE” things: RElax – REtrospect – REview – REnew – and, if possible, try to REschedule discretionary travel to minimize snafus like lost baggage and missed departures because Mercury rules transportation. But let’s face it: the reality of our fast-paced times doesn’t always allow for a three-week hiatus in our own forward motion. After all, not everything goes awry by a long shot. Planes land on time. Contracts get signed. Plans work out. The old adage about positive expectations upping the odds for the delivery of positive results can go a long way during these times. Back that up with an extra measure of due diligence, attention to detail, and heightened awareness of your contribution in any communication situation, and the trickster with the wings on his heels won’t be able to work you over! * Johnson, Kenneth. “The Many Faces of Mercury Retrograde.” Cedar Ridge, CA: The Mountain Astrologer, June/July 2014
