hen they’re not whipping up custommade vegan wedding cakes or teasing their 32,000 Instagram followers with mouth-watering, animal-free donuts and pastries, the owners of the Cinnamon Snail food truck have quite a few furry friends to attend to at home. Adam Sobel and Joey Smith, the husband and wife duo from Red Bank who began the popular food truck back in 2010, have rescued, fostered, and rehabbed close to a hundred domestic pets and various wildlife over the past decade. If you stopped by the family’s house, you’d be greeted by two Border Collies, one cat, a bunny, two sugar gliders, and most unusually, a wallaby named Doyle Huckabee, a mid-sized macropod. Young wallabies, like their larger kangaroo cousins, are called joeys. “We don't have a typical life,” says Joey, as she strokes the cuddled-up animal in her lap. “This wouldn't work in a normal household” because wallabies are “not like dogs or cats.” For example, Doyle cannot be potty trained, will never answer to his name, and is startled extremely easily due to the instinctual nature of being a prey animal. Considering wallabies can live up to 15 years in captivity, caring for one is a long-term commitment, but there is no one better for the job than Joey. Doyle, also known by his nickname, Do-Do, was rescued by the couple in October of 2015 when he was around 8 months old. Wallabies are bred in the United States as exotic pets, and occasionally for exotic meat. When an organization in upstate New York saved two wallabies from being bred for consumption, they were shocked to find a baby still developing in one of the mother’s pouches. Unfortunately, the group had no room for an additional wallaby and had to scramble to find it a forever home: that’s when Joey came across the story online and decided to step in. “I called when I found out about it,” says Joey. “They told me the situation and I told them I’ve never had a wallaby before, but I’ve done my reading and I think I’m prepared to take this on.” Besides being an expert vegan baker, Joey is also an apprentice under a licensed wildlife rehabilitator at the Garden State Wildlife Center. She provides foster care to animals, rehabilitates and releases wildlife, and even adopts some of them indefinitely: Doyle was one of the latter. Since the only person a wallaby truly ever bonds with is its mother, Joey made sure to form a nurturing relationship with Doyle and give him as normal of a life as possible. “As heavy as he was, I carried him in a pouch everyday, all the time,” says Joey. She even slept curled around him in the pouch, and Continued on next page

adds that he is “really loving and snuggly.” He gets along well with the domestic pets, but is kept separate from the other wildlife that the family rehabilitates in their barn, such as the orphaned raccoons and squirrels. And as for his diet? Doyle enjoys vegan cuisine with the rest of his human family, but he goes through phases just like any picky child. He’s currently into spinach, carrot tops, and Timothy hay, and enjoys grazing in the backyard during the summer months. He’s an early riser, and likes to go downstairs around four or five in the morning to eat and play outside. Wallabies are crepuscular, which means that they are most active during the hours of dawn and dusk. Joey and family refers to this as “the hopping hour,” when Doyle goes crazy hopping around their downtown Red Bank yard. Joey still sometimes carries Doyle around town in his pouch, much to the fascination of the public. “We want to share him with the world, yet not encourage people to go out and adopt a wallaby because it's a crazy amount of work,” she says. Local rescue groups in the area that work diligently to find homes for pets include C.A.R.E (carenj.com), Wag On Inn (wagoninn. rescuegroups.org), the SPCA (monmouthcountyspca.org), The Associated Humane Society (ahscares.org) and Fur Friends In Need, with adoptions at Holmdel Petsmart 1–4pm every Sunday (furfriendsinneed.com). Joey urges the many other ways the community can help out, either by volunteering to staff adoption events, cleaning cages, walking dogs/cats, or through donating vital items like formula, blankets, carriers, bowls, and cleaning supplies. “I wish people would just be sure before they take on an animal, because so many pets end up in shelters. If you're going to take on something like this, you have to stick with it.” says Joey. “Adopt, don’t shop.” https://www.instagram.com/doyle_huckabee/

Surfer Girl

Shrewsbury native Melissa D’Anna was always into surfing, a passion that grew when she moved to Hawaii after graduating college to be a middle school English teacher. But, although she lived for the sport and fully embraced surf culture, she never imagined opening a surf shop. That is, until her longing for the Jersey Shore pulled her back home. Today, Melissa is the proud owner of Lucky Dog Surf Co. in Sea Bright, named for her rescue dog “Guinness.” The 26-year-old is a trailblazer for women surf shop owners in the area, and even around the country. “I hope to make surfing accessible for everyone,” she says. “I don’t want people to feel intimidated. I want to create a fun, comfortable and supportive atmosphere, where people feel welcome, no matter their skill level.” Melissa caters to both surfer guys and girls, stocking a huge selection of surf goods and equipment, including surfboards, skimboards, wetsuits, leashes and related gear. She also sells swimwear, clothing, sandals, flip flops and accessories for men and women, and has surfboards and paddleboards for rent. The store offers private and small-group lessons in surfing and paddleboarding, as well as surf birthday parties. As part of her community-minded mission, Melissa will feature the work of local artists in the in-store gallery, employ local board shapers, and work with area high school surf teams. Lucky Dog Surf Co. will host a Grand Opening celebration from 12-4 p.m. on June 3, with popcorn, popsicles, cotton candy, raffles, giveaways, music, and a chance to meet Lucky Dog Surf Co.’s mascot, Guinness! FILM STS

2nd Annual Monmouth Film Festival AUGUST 10–13

Two River Theater, Red Bank monmouthfilmfestival.org

Founded in December 2016 by Nick Marchese of Holmdel when he was a senior in the film program at Montclair State University, the MFF was launched in Red Bank under the banner “By Filmmakers. For Filmmakers.” From the get-go, the non-profit’s mission included “educating and inspiring artists,” as well as creating serious opportunities for filmmakers for “exposure and networking with local and national artists, press and industry professionals.” In short, MFF means business as well as the pleasure of seeing the best selections of independent works in the submission categories of feature, short and student films (all genres), screenplays, trailers, TV pilots and web series. The four-day event includes an Industry Networking Event and Industry Film Panel with producers, distributors, filmmaker/directors and more. Ticket per feature or short film block, $12; Festival Pass, $45-$95

2nd Annual Indie Street Film Festival JULY 26–30

Red Bank indiestreetfilmfestival.org The exuberant spirit of the first Indie Street Film Festival spread across Red Bank like a smile last year. Returning with its unabashed love of community this summer, the five day “celebration of film, the arts, and diverse voices” screens narrative, documentary and animation films by New Jersey and independent filmmakers at multiple venues—the Count Basie Theatre, Bow Tie Cinema, Two River Theater and Red Bank Middle School. Workshops, panels discussions, filmmaker Q&A’s, live art happenings, music performances, and after-parties go on all over town. Filmmakers, writers, photographers, you...everybody’s welcome! An all-access pass is $169; film-only access, $99.

Nobody Does It Better.

W

hen Marilyn Schlossbach acquired the famed Rumson steakhouse formerly known as What’s Your Beef back in 2016, she knew she needed to find a way to preserve the building’s spirit while also leaving her distinct mark upon it. The re-branded establishment, now charmingly called Russell & Bette’s (named after the headmasters of Ranney School, where Marilyn attended high school) still offers diners a familiar cozy atmosphere: the same horseshoe-shaped bar, the pre-served stained glass windows, the exposed brick walls, and even many of the same staff members who faithfully stuck around during the restaurant’s transition. Patrons can still rely on Russell & Bette’s to satisfy their cravings for a juicy steak, but much of the menu has been up-dated to reflect a “farm-to-table, neighborhood French” flair. What does this mean exactly? For Marilyn, it means “taking the traditional a little bit outside of the box,” inspired by her “offbeat” travels to other countries. Boeuf bourguignon is served with buttered spaetzle, an homage to Marilyn’s German roots; French onion soup is made from a vegetarian mushroom base instead of beef stock; the Asparagus Mimosa features grilled asparagus topped with a locally grown, sunny-side up egg from Merrick Farm, garnished with shaved butterscotch gouda. “Restaurants to me are art,” says Marilyn. “It’s not just about the flavor. It’s also about the presentation, the care, and the love that goes into the products.” Much of this love is evident on Russell & Bette’s newly-launched summer menu: the lightened up fare includes tuna tartare with watermelon radishes, farm-raised organic salmon, oysters, pink scallops and coq rosé- a twist on the classic coq au vin. Russell & Bette’s does much more than just please the palate. In likeness to all of the other Jersey Shore restaurants in Marilyn’s portfolio, which includes Langosta Lounge, Labrador Lounge, Pop’s Garage, Asbury Park Yacht Club, and Marilyn Schlossbach Catering & Events, Russell & Bette’s is committed to giving back to the community. Marilyn formed an alliance with local winemaker Jim Foley to launch Community Vines, a wine label that donates a portion of proceeds from the bottles to local nonprofit charities fighting hunger in New Jersey. A wine tasting event will take place at Russell & Bette’s on June 8th, where $10 of each ticket sold will be split between the FoodBank of Monmouth Coun-ty and Lunch Break in Red Bank. Russell & Bette’s has something for everyone, like Sunday Brunch, live music on Fridays and Saturdays, craft beers, Tuesday Lobster Nights, Wednesday Burger Nights, and countless opportunities to help neighbors in need. Once a month, a local charity sets up a table to speak at Community Night, and ten percent of that night’s revenue will go to-wards the organization, a list which so far includes places such as Parker Foundation and Monmouth Conservation. “We get what charity is all about, and it’s who I am,” says Marilyn. “Everything I do publicly should be attached to helping somebody.” The cost of tweaking an old steakhouse? Pricey. The cost of making the world a better place? Priceless.

ablo Picasso once asked, “Why do two colors, put one next to the other, sing? Can one really explain this?” Meryl Blinder can. The artist’s paintings and drawings showcase, celebrate, and study the interactions, intensities, saturations, and subtleties of color. Her lifelong interest in color found expression first as a silk-screener, and later as a courtroom artist. But, Bauhaus Abstract it was truly honed during a decade as a colorist under renowned architect 40x30 Acrylic Michael Graves, creating color-rich, water-inspired designs and patterns on Canvas for wallcoverings, carpets and murals for Walt Disney World’s Swan and Dolphin Hotels. One notable exception to her colorful art is a black and white pencil drawing depicting the geometric pattern of a World Trade Center tower; it was acquired by the Library of Congress as part of its permanent collection of art in response to 9/11. “My work puts the color principles and theories of Josef Albers into practice,” Meryl explains. “Color is all about its context and the interaction with other colors.” Her latest series of paintings includes an exploration of clouds, landscapes, and abstraction. A showing of Meryl’s work will take place on Tuesday, June 6 from 5:30-8:30 p.m., with the artist presenting a talk on color on Wednesday, June 7 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at Gallery Jupiter, the Little Silver gallery owned by her sister, Judi Trammell. “Judi and I have a very similar esthetic,” Meryl says. “We grew up with an appreciation for art and beauty.” The artist will be on hand to discuss her work, and maybe even reveal her favorite color.

Photos & Feature COURTESY OF MONMOUTH ARTS

ummertime nights in Red Bank are carnival flavored. The sidewalks are festooned with colorful flower plantings. Couples stroll about town, or relax on benches people watching. The tinkle of cutlery and glass accompany the buzz of al fresco diners. Above all of this wafts strains of music coming from the musicians tucked into cozy nooks about town. In other spots, painters work at their art. The presence of these plein air artists and musicians has led many to liken downtown Red Bank to Greenwich Village, but unlike the Village, the musicians and artists in Red Bank’s public spaces are by no means random. Their presence is carefully orchestrated by Red Bank RiverCenter, the 501(c)(3) that manages Red Bank’s Special Improvement District (redbank.org/rivercenter).

“We developed StreetLife to create a festive atmosphere and to make sure that both the artists and the audience have the best experience possible,” said Amanda Lynn, RiverCenter Program Manager. “Over the more than 15 years we have been running this program, we have refined it based on feedback from our businesses, the artists, and visitors to town.” Through open auditions, RiverCenter has amassed a pool of talented performers, aged 18 to 80, working in a variety of genres including jazz, blues, classical, pop, rock, folk, and country. Auditions are also open to magicians, mimes, and other types of acts that will entertain and attract people to town.

Thursday Night Live! June & July 6–9pm

Jazz in the Park Thursday Nights July & August 7–9pm May Darlings

In 2014, StreetLife expanded to include visual artists. Since then, painters, jewelry designers, sculptors and potters have set up their easels and work tables on Broad or Monmouth Streets and offered the public new insights into how art gets done. For many artists, StreetLife provides their first paid “gig.” Others are seasoned performers and have been playing clubs and festivals for many years. RiverCenter pays the artists for their time and provides signage to inform the public about who they are. Because they are being paid under contract, the performers do not accept tips; they are, however, permitted to distribute their promotional literature and sell CDs, T-shirts, and other merchandise. Visual artists are permitted to sell small original works and prints. On a Saturday night during June, July, and August, there will be 4 to 5 musical performers positioned throughout town and one visual artist. Last year, RiverCenter expanded the program to Thursday evenings to build on the infusion of people in town to hear Jazz in the Park later in the evening and Thursday Night Live! continues this year. StreetLife is not only about creating a vibrant atmosphere in downtown Red Bank; it’s about providing unique opportunities for local artists and a way for them to reach people whom they would not otherwise encounter. “StreetLife is a fun way to reach people through music, young and old, right on the sidewalks of a very cool town,” says Thoraf Tollefsen, vocalist and guitarist of Square Head (squarehead2.bandcamp.com). The band—with Mark Jones on bass guitar and Dimitri Kulaga on drums—describes itself as a musical smorgasbord that includes Beatles-esque, Stones-ish, bluesy music done their own way, with anything in-between. Unlike musicians, visual artists can actually hold a conversation while they perform. Last summer, husband and wife team Lizzi Schippert and Sven Widen were stationed at the intersection of Broad and Monmouth Streets when a young girl and her parents stopped to watch Sven paint a watercolor of the view down Monmouth Street. The 8-year-old was fascinated. “We talked for about an hour. Sven explained his process as he painted,” said Schippert. “She ended up taking classes with us for the rest of the summer.” (schippert-widen.com) Jewelry by Dana McKay

Among the more than thirty acts on the 2017 Streetlife program are returning favorites—including Clan Suibhne, The Wag, and May Darlings—as well as exciting new artists. See Events at redbank.org for the weekly schedule. Even better, come this summer for plein air Red Bank, live and in-person.

By LISA READIE MAYER

WITH STUNNING RIVERS, BAYS, COVES, LAKES, AND THE MAJESTIC ATLANTIC OCEAN ALL MINUTES AWAY IN MONMOUTH COUNTY, SUMMER IS THE PERFECT TIME TO MAKE THE COASTAL CONNECTION. SO JUMP IN! THE WATER’S FANTASTIC! PIRATE PARADE Arhg! Thar’ be pirates, for sure, when the PARADE OF LIGHTS illuminated boat parade kicks off around 8:30pm on Saturday, June 17, with more than 150 boats adorned, emblazoned and bedazzled with lights and other decorations. Boaters can join in for free (donations accepted), from any of the three starting points in Red Bank, Sea Bright and Atlantic Highlands, then parade to Highlands where all boats rendezvous and parade together to the Rumson bridge and back again. Not to be outdone, riverfront homeowners along the route often deck-out their docks, adding to the spectacular. The thirdannual event is hosted by PIRATES CARE, a home-grown nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Shrewsbury and Navesink Rivers, and local environmental and humanitarian causes. This year’s beneficiaries include the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, The Valerie Fund, and the Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Fund. No boat? No worries. You can book a ride on THE MARINER, a classic wooden charter boat out of Atlantic Highlands (classicboatrides.com), and join the parade. Or, watch from any of the waterfront restaurants, public parks or docks along the route. “It’s a fun night for a good cause,” says Jerry Homiak, founder of Pirates Care. “And this year it happens the night before Father’s Day, so it would be a great way to celebrate with the family.” piratescare.org

LOOKING GOOD,

LONG BRANCH! By LISA READIE MAYER with TOM CHESEK Been to Long Branch lately? It’s definitely time to take a new look. After considering locations throughout the state, Holly Migliaccio and business partner Shawn Kingsley chose Monmouth County’s largest city to be the site of the big, new 10,500sq. ft. company headquarters, warehouse and roasting facility for ROOK COFFEE, their specialty coffee company that currently has 10 coffee bars, an on-line store, and 140 employees (and growing). The two entrepreneurial dynamos and childhood friends, who both grew up in West Long Branch, were excited about joining in and contributing to the new vitality of the city and their neighborhood on North Third Avenue. “We wanted to invest in an area we believe in,” says Holly. “We’re three blocks from the beach. It’s a great place to work.”

playwrights. In addition to its main playhouse, the company is spreading its sphere of cultural good stuff with the creation of the WEST END ARTS CENTER. Housed in the former the West End Elementary School at 132 West End Avenue (purchased for $2.25 million from the city), the center will be a one-stop locale for live theater, music, dance, gallery exhibitions and film screenings. A formal, ambitious, multi-phase capital campaign is in the works to repurpose existing classrooms into performance/rehearsal/ lecture spaces, instructional studios, a scenery shop, and administrative offices, but the building is already officially open as a venue for instructional classes in theater (Improvisation, Actors Gymnasium, Acting Basics), beginner and advanced playwriting, and visual arts (Drawing, Water Media, Tapestry, Jewelry Workshop). This fall, look for NJ Rep's multidisciplinary FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS, running October 1 through 8. The event includes the Theater Brut Short-Play Festival and a “mixed-bag anthology” of art, poetry, photography and music, interpreting this year’s theme "All About Eve."

Then it’s a short walk to THE WHITECHAPEL PROJECTS, scheduled to open this summer after five years in development and a multi-million dollar investment. Named for the gritty The ELBERON MEMORIAL CHURCH, 1 Park Whitechapel neighborhood in London that has been revitalized Avenue in the Elberon district of Long into a vibrant culture hub, the Branch, is a cultural treasure, as well as a Long Branch version transforms a nondenominational house of worship, that dilapidated industrial warehouse, has been in continuous operation since Artist Kashink with her mural at Whitechapel Projects with five interconnected buildings, at 1886 when it was built as a memorial 15-17 Second Avenue, into a world-class cultural destination to Moses B. A SAVVY NEW WAY TO TARGET BREAST TUMORS

W

ith the help of early detection, awareness campaigns such as the annual Hackensack Meridian Health Paint the Town Pink initiative and advanced technology, outcomes for women facing a breast cancer diagnosis are gradually improving. While there is still much work to be done, advancements are being made that can significantly enhance the experience during a distressing time. One such technology helping to improve a patient’s comfort is called SAVI SCOUT surgical guidance system, which offers targeted breast tissue localization to precisely locate and direct the removal of specific breast tissue during a lumpectomy for cancer or for a surgical breast biopsy. ®

“The standard method of removing an area of breast tissue that you can’t feel is to insert a guidewire into the breast tissue on the day of surgery to mark the location,” says Debra Camal, M.D., medical director for breast surgery at Riverview Medical Center. “That technique works well, but patients often complain about extra waiting time and express concern about the presence of the wire, which is visible outside the breast.” With SCOUT however, radiologists can insert a small reflector into the tissue in question up to 30 days prior instead of inserting a wire on the same surgical day. During surgery, the surgeon uses the SAVI SCOUT probe to detect the location of the reflector and, therefore, the tumor or suspect tissue. It offers non-radioactive, radar technology to provide real-time surgical guidance during breast surgery. “This technology has a myriad of benefits,” Dr. Camal continues. “Not only can we eliminate the use of a radioactive seed—which some facilities use—and the discomfort of using wires in select patients, but it allows for increased scheduling flexibility, which helps to reduce the stress and anxiety that accompanies these procedures. Perhaps one of its greatest benefits is its accuracy, which may help surgeons preserve healthy breast tissue during the procedure.”

Debra Camal, M.D.

Precision is key when fighting cancer. SCOUT potentially enables surgeons to increase the likelihood of complete cancer removal and can help to eliminate the need for additional surgeries in the future.

“This is a great piece of technology that can really make the process better for people needing a breast biopsy,” says Dr. Camal. “It is a viable option for many patients, but there are numerous factors to consider, which may not make it appropriate for all cases. A patient’s surgeon and radiologist will suggest the most accurate and safest method to remove a breast tumor. It’s also important to note that while technology to diagnose and treat breast cancer is getting better, the best bet is catching it early.” Dr. Camal advises women to beware of breast changes, obtain a yearly exam from a physician and to follow the guidelines for obtaining mammograms. MAKE LOVE NOT WAR JUPITER IN LIBRA SEPTEMBER 9, 2016 TO OCTOBER 10, 2017

As a new chapter opens in our nation’s history,

the zodiacal source of good fortune, benevolence, and optimism is currently passing through the peace-loving, relationship-savvy, creative, romantic and sociable sign of Libra. This is a very comfortable combination of planet and sign: Jupiter is fiery, energetic and expansive, non-judgmental and honorable. Law and justice are among the areas of life experience that it rules. Libra, symbolized by the scales of justice, is airy and fair-minded, seeing balance and equality, and is well-versed in the arts and skills of diplomacy, negotiation, and compromise.

The outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) operate on both the personal and societal/global levels, so this passage opens the door of opportunity to work on relationships of all kinds. Personally, floundering relationships can gain new life and hope, building on Jupiter’s eternal confidence that things can always get better and Libra’s expertise on how to make that happen. At the societal and global levels, new peace-making initiatives can have real hope of bearing fruit. A world weary of anger and accusation and discrimination and intolerance and, yes, war can look toward brighter solutions with the thought of success being not just a pipe dream. Energy is neutral. It’s how it is used that determines whether it manifests positively or negatively. The dark side of Jupiter is always excess: too much of a good thing that can lead to disregard of necessary details and red flags, or cockeyed optimism that expects things to work out no matter how much or how little effort we put into the cause. Libra is self-indulgent and not inclined to do any heavy lifting. Both love the good life. If we’re not careful, we could fritter away this stunning opportunity in a flurry of charming sociability and idle pleasures. Talk about a Universe with a great sense of timing! Let’s all make the most of it.
