he purpose of the Navesink Business Group, a Red Bank-based network of business owners and professionals, is to promote new business opportunities among group members and give back to the communities where they all live and work and play. Over the years NBG has raised money for organizations such as Lunch Break, Operation Home Front (which supports the military and their families in need), the Ashley Lauren Foundation (which helps kids with cancer), and local businesses: for example, the group orchestrated a fundraising event to help the owner of Boondocks Fishery, in Red Bank, get her restaurant back on its storm-battered feet.

“A large aspect of our efforts is directed to local community assistance,” explains Rob Lowe, who founded NBG in 2006 and is a loan officer with Ocean First Bank in Red Bank, where he also lives. With much, but by no means all of the shore area well along the post-Sandy comeback trail to recovery, Rob watched in horror last September as a large section of the Seaside Park boardwalk (having just been restored following the hurricane) went up in flames, destroying 32 businesses including that of a friend’s. Although Seaside Park, geographically speaking, is “a little bit out of our footprint,” Rob knew “we had to do something.”

And do something they did. While the Navesink Business Group usually selects one business or non-profit each year to assist, Rob, along with Ken Scaggs, CEO of The Kerr Agency, and other NBG members decided to “go a little bit bigger.” What started as an effort to aid financially and draw attention to Seaside Park has grown into an ambitious multi-faceted undertaking that will also assist a number of storm-beleaguered shore towns—all while raising awareness to promote tourism with the message that the Jersey Shore is back open for business.

OP

“We want to be all-inclusive,” explains Rob. Towards that end, NBG has enlisted the aid of everyone from Cliff Moore, president of the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce, to Bob Hilton, director of the Jersey Shore Convention & Visitors Bureau, and New Jersey Promise, a non-profit established in 2013 to help people and businesses in Central New Jersey recover from Hurricane Sandy. Also on board are the Eastern Monmouth Area, Southern Monmouth, Ocean, and Brick Township Chambers of Commerce along with the Monmouth-Ocean Development Council, Red Bank Flavour—a culinary alliance of Red Bank restaurants, Freehold Network for Success, Rotary International, New Jersey Restaurant Association, Eatontown Industrial Park Association, and numerous individuals and businesses. According to Rob, ten communities or businesses that were impacted by Superstorm Sandy were drawn from a hat and include Highlands, Sea Bright, Keansburg, Union Beach, and Brick. “We just want to raise the money,” explains Rob, “and the local chambers or civic organizations can decide where they’d like their share to go.” The Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County is also a recipient, along with Seaside Park. A kick-off fundraiser was held in November in Seaside Park to announce NBG’s goals and schedule of “Waves of Support” events, produced in conjunction with Jersey Promise. NBG’s goal is to net $100,000 after expenses, through three gala events. Entertainment, facilities, and food and beverages will be donated. “We are fortunate to have so many willing to provide their services for free, keeping our expenses minimal,” says Rob, who serves as NBG’s event spokesperson. “It truly is a team effort. The evenings give like-minded organizations, as well as the people who love our coastal communities, the chance to celebrate and support tourism for the Jersey Shore,” he adds, “and proclaim that ‘The Jersey Shore is Open for Business.’”

businessmen launched a YMCA branch in modest quarters in Red Bank (the Young Men’s Christian Association was started in London in 1844). “It’s been 140 years of improving lives in the greater Red Bank community,” says Rhonda Anderson, president and CEO of what today is called The Community YMCA. “We’ve always been a place for people to gather for socialization and I think it’s still a really important part of our heritage and will continue to be, but there is so much more we have to offer—more than many people imagine.” Much has changed as the Y has expanded its scope from fostering Christian principles of a healthy “body, mind and spirit” to becoming, as Rhonda explains, a multi-faceted, cause-driven organization with a focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. It is a mandate far removed from any notion of the Y as a simple local swim-and-gym. “I think we’ve done a pretty good job of evolving and looking at what are some of the critical issues facing our communities and what can we do as a charitable organization to successfully address them,” says Rhonda, a 20-year veteran of both non-profit and Fortune 500 companies who joined the Y in 2012. For example, in recent years the Y has adopted a holistic approach towards wellness with an eye towards prevention, becoming a resource to help families make healthy lifestyle choices at a time when childhood obesity and diabetes run rampant throughout the state. Another significant growth area is childcare. The Y has expanded its after-school programs; they are now conducted at 30 separate school locations. The Y’s counseling and social programs and services, an array of initiatives that are not typically associated with the YMCAs nationwide, have also evolved. Here, the Y works closely with the New Jersey’s Department of Children and Families to offer stabilization and support to families. The state thinks so highly of the Y’s ability to get things done that it asked the volunteer-powered organization to partner with them in creating and running the Family Success Center, which opened last June in Union Beach to provide services to residents there and throughout the Bayshore—currently some 1,000 families—still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. “Today’s Y has the ability, resources, and commitment to better the overall health and well being of all of our constituents, from children to senior citizens, regardless of anyone’s financial situation,” adds Rhonda. “Going forward, I think you’ll see us take even more of a leadership role in affecting positive change.”

KATHY KARLEN DONNELLY Why Beauregard? Kathy Karlen Donnelly explains that she fell in love with art on a 1978 high school trip to Paris. In homage to this experience she gave her fine art gallery, now celebrating it’s 12th anniversary, a French name that symbolizes what she feels is one of the most important attributes of art—beauregard—beautiful to look at. With a focus primarily on contemporary American art, ranging from established names to emerging artists, the works at Rumson’s Beauregard Gallery embody this sensibility.

BEAUREGARD FINE ART

After receiving her MBA from Northeastern, Kathy launched her career as a financial consultant basing herself in London. She explains that while she worked in finance, her heart belonged to art. “Something I always took solace in was that every lunch hour I’d go to various museums. So even though I was making my living in finance, I remained passionate about art”. In 2000, Kathy moved to Rumson and, while raising two young children, started hosting shows at home, initially selling her sister artist Megan Karlen’s work and soon, the works of other artists. She recalls “Everybody kept saying, you ought to open a gallery!” On October 27, 2001 that’s just what she did. Her first show featured artists from Wellfleet—an art mecca on Cape Cod—where Kathy has visited every summer for the past five decades. Among the painters who’ve been shown on Beauregard’s walls include students of Hans Hofman, the German-born American painter who brought Abstract Expressionism to the United States in the 1950’s, and Tobi Kahn, renowned New York-based painter and sculptor of abstract, biomorphic forms. Unlike the typical traditional gallery owner, Kathy enjoys meeting clients at their homes. She explains “We find that it can be daunting to look at the art in a traditional gallery setting, so at Beauregard, we bring the art to you. We hang it in your home on a trial basis, and we install it when the work works. Our goal is to marry beautiful pieces of art with a client’s lifestyle and tastes.” When describing her passion for pairing clients with suitable art she says that her searches take her even beyond Beauregard Gallery’s inventory, “I’ve even sold the paintings of artists that I have never shown in the gallery”. This having been said, Kathy is always on the lookout for emerging artists and maintains a wide-ranging inventory including paintings by artists working in different styles and in different phases of their careers. And as Beauregard Gallery’s offerings expand, the client list has been expanding to not only include the local community, but also collectors nationwide.

CAROLYNN DIAKON As Carolynn Diakon jokingly tells her agents: “We’re not in the lawn decoration business. Go buy a gnome if you want to decorate people’s lawns.”

RESOURCES REAL ESTATE

But she’s serious about the lawn signs coming off as quickly as possible. It means a successful sale for a client by Resources Real Estate, a firm she started in 2000 that today has offices in Rumson, Red Bank, Monmouth Beach and Atlantic Highlands. “We give honest, good sound advice in terms of pricing—we’re not taking a listing at any cost—so our job is to get the property sold, rather than just getting the next listing,” she explains. “I’m very results based, obviously, because that’s what my clients are hiring me for.” It is a way of doing business that has earned the firm a consistent ranking in the top 5% of realtors throughout Monmouth County. Her way is fundamentally different. For starters, agents work in a very collaborative manner. There’s no cutthroat competition, no drama, Carolynn explains, having experienced both since entering the industry in 1986. If agents happen to be talking to the same prospect, a meeting is held to discuss what’s best for the client and how best to proceed. Unlike most firms, a paid receptionist sits at the front desk, to direct calls to the right person. “I believe that the listing agent is the person who should be handling all inquiries into their listing. And that’s really what I think the client would expect, though that’s not always what they get at other companies, and they may not even be aware.” Born and educated in England—and presently living on a farm in Middletown—Carolynn worked at several high profile firms before going out on her own. “In traditional agencies the bottom line is very, very important, and it is—it’s a business, I get it—but I feel that the client experience should be at the top of the list and not somewhere halfway down,” she maintains. Taking the philosophy a step further, her firm offers clients a concierge service. Airport pickups, limo arrangements. There’s even a company boat—a 36-foot cruiser docked at the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club in Fair Haven. “Pretty unusual,” she allows. In early August, a local newspaper dubbed Carolynn “the most powerful woman in Rumson,” referring to a section of her firm’s web site called “Monmouth Social Calendar,” created to promote causes she deems worthy. Highly regarded as both broker and philanthropist, Carolynn sits on three boards and is involved with numerous committees. “We’re really community based, and get involved with a variety of social events and fundraisers,” she says.

“los er” TAKE ALL

J

ust walking into Two River Theater, the nervous energy is palpable; even viral. From the parking lot and lobby, to the elevator and the second floor walkway, a passing parade of people—all makes and models, from balding heads to Brooklyn beards, to barely out of braces—paces around, muttering memorized words and doing anything necessary to psych themselves up. No question about it: despite the playful name, the poetry event called Loser Slam is serious stuff. Inside the building’s Victoria J. Mastrobuono Library, MaryCae Vignolini explains to a group of aspiring “slammers” how to combat the squeamishness that comes from getting up in front of an audience. “I practice in the car, in the shower, look at myself in the mirror and run my poem quickly,” says the Freehold-based “core member” of the Loser Slam collective that began life at Brookdale Community College in 2006. “If you’re still nervous, then pick a short poem.”

FREE FOR ALL

SLAM SESSIONS

Monday Evenings 7pm MARCH 17 | APRIL 14 & 28 | MAY 5 & 19 Two River Theater/Victoria J. Mastrobuono Library 21 Bridge Avenue Free admission. Workshop sessions commence at 6pm. “First come first served” open mic sign-up start at 6:30. Follow the Losers on Facebook for updated details on local happenings.

According to fellow Freehold resident Nicole Homer, a live Loser Slam is something altogether “louder, more uproarious” than a traditional podium reading…one in which “we go out of our way to establish a community feeling, to make every new person feel at home.” Indeed, a night at one of Loser Slam’s Monday happenings can blast away many of the myths and misconceptions that come to mind when imagining the “poetry slam” experience. For one thing, while the atmosphere is charged and interactive, the readers are treated with respect and attentiveness— you’ll see no bottles hurled from the cheap seats. The language, while veering at times into PG territory, is nothing like the blue blur of a typical comedy jam—and while competition is keen, a typical faceoff between two poet finalists is infinitely more likely to end in a handshake than a headbutting. “It’s a friendly vibe...nobody’s booing, and win or lose, we’re all very happy that you read your poem,”

Loser Slam inside the Victoria J. Mastrobuono Library

says Nicole of the open mic interludes that precede the competitive slam sessions. “We’ve got a lot of new people when we came to Red Bank...every race and class and age, ranging from 14 or 15, to 60 and 70.” The writer-educator took over as “Slam Master” of the group from founder Chad Anderson a few years ago, when Nicole, MaryCae and fellow core organizer Josh Ballard established a residency at Long Branch’s legendary Inkwell coffeehouse. From there it was on to Green Planet in Neptune—a place that never reopened after being smacked by Superstorm Sandy. The “nomadic” troupe rebounded into brief engagements in Belmar and Asbury Park—after which the Slam gang was approached last fall by Two River Theater Company’s Cassie Galasetti to initiate what Nicole describes as “a great relationship...and a collaborative process, in which the theater has brainstormed ideas with us, allowing us to take artistic risks instead of dictating policy.” It also helps that the facility offers ample parking, easy access from the nearby train station…and close proximity to the Broadway Diner (“if you’re running a poetry slam, you’ve got to have a diner”)...making for a scene in which “the community has really come out to support us.” The second floor library—a nicely appointed space that boasts comfortable accommodation for 30 to 40 slamfans, plus a fireplace, coffee/snack bar, wood shelves lined with volumes on theater history—offers what Nicole describes as “just the right ambience.”

emcee, warming up the crowd with the confident mien of a postmodern sideshow barker or ready-to-rumble wrestling announcer. With the help of some sweet snacks from the bar, he’s soon got the crowd testifying like a tent revival, even as he enforces the group’s ironclad rules regarding overlong running time and arrogant attitude. Open mic readers are free to “cover” another poet’s work, while the main event centers on readings of all-original poems and spoken word pieces (in three rounds of competition and elimination), for which audience members are recruited as judges who award points from 1 to 10—and in which, true to the Loser Slam credo, the lowest score wins (“a 10 is the worst score…it takes the pressure off that number”). It all adds up to more than just a $50 cash prize, a slot in the quarterly semifinals, and those all-important bragging rights to the winner. The ultimate goal of these competitions is to assemble a dream-team to compete at August’s National Poetry Slam finals in Oakland, CA—and to finance that team’s travel expenses. Future events promise the participation of published guest poet-performers. The Loser Slam collective has worked closely with TRTC’s Galasetti and Kate Cordero to conjure themes that tie into current mainstage offerings—permutations of Shakespearean sonnets for “As You Like It;” explorations of “life caught between worlds” for the immigrant drama “Pinkolandia.” So support your local poets by planning to devote about three hours of your time, as well as a few donated bucks in the passed jar. And, as MaryCae explains it, “Leave your ego at the door...we’re here for poetry, and for community.”

The Melting Pot mission is to make fondue a memorable fourcourse dining experience, a culinary adventure in a relaxed atmosphere with private tables, attentive service, fine wines and signature fondue courses. “There's just something about a fondue pot that brings people together, invites conversation, and is fun. It’s a great concept, and“ says owner Ken Kruse.

With fondue, you do you own cooking and, at The Melting Pot, you get to choose from a variety of entree cooking styles and dipping preferences— Coq au Vin (infused burgundy wine), Court Bouillon (seasoned vegetable broth); Mojo (Caribbean-inspired bouillon); and, European-style Bourguignonne (cholesterol-free canola oil with 0g tans-fat). Filet mignon, breast of duck, Portobello mushrooms, vegetable potstickers, cedar-plank salmon, cold-water lobster tail...pick your entree and begin dipping in the cooking pot right at your table. Fill the pot with melted cheese for the classic fondue experience...or melted chocolate for a decadent dessert.

SMALL-PLATE SHARING With Taste, Ken’s second restaurant in The Galleria, he wanted to do something different, while adhering to a similar theme of small-plate sharing. In similar fashion to the Melting Pot, Taste encourages sampling among friends. Salads, bruschettas, small bites, pizzettes, presses, sweet bites, tasters—a little bit of this: Wild Mushroom Bruschetta or Turkey & Gruyere Press...and a little bit of that: Po’Boy Slider or Coconut Shrimp Small Bite. Both restaurants draw a crowd. On the busiest nights, The Melting Pot, a destination spot and one for loyal locals, might see around 500 patrons; 1,200 over a weekend. Taste, more of a lively bar scene compared to Melting Pot’s relaxed vibe—the wine list does include over 400 labels, going up to $2,400 a bottle—has been known, on busy weekend nights, to close its doors by 11PM, the place being full.

COLORECTAL CANCER

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW by NOAH CARPENTER for Riverview Medical Center

M

ost people aren’t aware that March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, but even fewer people know that colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the U.S., with estimates for 2014 topping 50,000 deaths.

Simply put, colorectal cancer is the formation of malignant cells found in the colon or rectum. The colon and the rectum are parts of the large intestine, which is part of the digestive system. Because colon cancer and rectal cancers have many features in common, they are sometimes referred to together as colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women excluding skin cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 140,000 new colorectal cancer cases and more than 50,000 deaths occur each year. Robert Gialanella, M.D., of Riverview Medical Center, provides important information on the risks and prevention of colorectal cancer.

“Knowledge is the first step to beating cancer. One of the most effective forms of prevention is having screening tests at appropriate ages.” Robert Gialanella, M.D., Riverview Medical Center

“While this form of cancer can occur at any age,” says Dr. Gialanella, “the majority of those who suffer from it are over the age of 50.” Besides age, there are a few important risk factors everyone should be aware of. “Colorectal cancer is most often associated with a diet high in red meats and processed foods” says Dr. Gialanella, “ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease also increases the risk of colorectal cancer.” Although the exact cause of colorectal cancer is not known, it may be possible to lower your risk of colorectal cancer.

“It’s important to manage the risk factors you can control,” says Dr. Gialanella, “diet, body weight, and exercise are all within your ability to change.” Eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain foods, and limiting red and processed meats, plus exercising appropriately, even small amounts on a regular basis, can be helpful. Screening may find some colorectal polyps that can be removed before they have a chance to become cancerous. Because some colorectal cancers cannot be prevented, finding them early is the best way to improve the chance of successful treatment, and reduce the number of deaths caused by colorectal cancer.

t the moment, Hans Mikaitis is restoring an iconic 28-ft. Herreshoff sailboat, built in 1964 in Barcelona, Spain. But that project is for himself, for the fun of it—keeps the caulking mallets and irons, adzes, pin mauls, whisps, and other boatbuilding staples busy too—but he’s still got to make a living, pay overhead on the shop, so he continues to take on jobs he can make a buck with. And then he goes back to the Herreshoff. It’s all in a long day’s work, one way or the other, for the shipbuilder who has plied his time-honored trade for some 55 years, more than 40 of them in Atlantic Highlands as owner of Master Shipwrights, Inc. There, in a modern 4,000 square foot “Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; facility near the borough’s municipal harbor, he has built and whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever restored all manner of antique and classic wooden craft that I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, float—and one that through celluloid magic flies.

and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet...then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.”

“When it comes to any kind of difficult woodworking specialty job, we can do it,” says Hans, which explains his admittedly unusual involvement with a project calling for an - Herman Melville, Moby-Dick extensive overhaul of the Galileo, the 3,000 pound, 24-foot long wood-on-metal-frame prop used in the filming of the 1960s “Star Trek” TV show. Abandoned for decades in an Ohio warehouse, Hans was commissioned to bring the shuttlecraft back to life. “Now it’s on display at the Houston Space Center, and I think they’re going to use it in the movie again,” he says. “The project was different, and I got to meet a lot of interesting people.” Of course, the major restoration of a 70-ft. yawl, Petrel, once owned by President John F. Kennedy is not exactly devoid of interest. Nor are the scores of other projects Hans and his crew at Master Shipwrights, Inc. have under their tool belts. These include North Light, a 130-ft. Canadian Light Ship converted to a luxury pleasure cruiser; Ship’s Café, a 40-ft. custom sport fishing vessel that Hans designed and built from scratch, as was the case with Crescent, a 26-ft. fan-tailed steamboat similar to those from the 1920s. There’s Blackberry, an all-mahogany 1950 Century speedboat that Hans restored to “gleaming splendor,” and a 34-ft. glass bottom tour boat that he designed and built for viewing marine life in the waters off Cyprus. Hans learned the finer points of boatbuilding and design—along with general woodworking skills suitable for virtually any application—the old-fashioned way: by doing. “Oh yea, it’s a hands on type deal, so that’s how that goes, you know,” he says, which offhandedly belies the countless hours he actually spent. A native of the seaport city of Klaipeda, Lithuania, Hans was first exposed to the trade through his boatbuilding father, and began to learn in earnest during the years spent in Germany, where Hans moved in 1944 when he was about seven. Then, in 1951, he relocated to the United States. While Hans once considered art as a career, his affinity with and aptitude for woodworking and boatbuilding were so strong that, following his formal education, he apprenticed at several yacht and boat works in Massachusetts, before moving yet again in 1957—this time to New Jersey’s Bayshore area. He left New England for Keyport because the Boston-area boat business “just went to pot; everybody folded up.” But at the time, boatbuilding in the Bayshore was still booming. Hans built lobster-rigged skiffs, flush-plank sailboats, power boats, sport fishing boats, you name it. He worked for Ulrichsen Boat Works, Clipper Craft, and Kulas Sea Skiffs. He owned and operated Twin Lights Yacht Works in Highlands and was partner in Zuber’s Sea Coast Basin in Brielle. And in 1973, he launched Master Shipwrights, Inc. “Oh yea, I’m past retirement now,” says Hans with conviction, before adding, “I mean, I’m 76 years old, but I just love it. It’s fun, you know.” He’s concerned, however, that few today embrace the profession with the passion he has always possessed. And while there are a handful of reputable schools for woodworking and boatbuilding, mostly in New England, he says, there are many more “shipwright wannabes” who have desire but “no follow-through. In this trade to know woodworking, you’ve got to know how to handle woodworking tools, and you’ve got to know boats,” Hans maintains. “Just to be a carpenter and trying to build a boat is not enough.” Apart from the craftsmen, the nature of boatbuilding has changed as well. “Right now everything is fiberglass,” says Hans, who successfully has melded his old world wood skills with new world technologies in the form of advanced putties and epoxies. While Hans may have followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a master shipwright, there’s no one to follow in his. That’s okay, for now, because Hans doesn’t plan to quit anytime soon. “They’ll have to get me out of here in a wooden box,” he jokes, “one that I’ll probably build myself.” MASTER SHIPWRIGHTS, INC. | 25 West Highland Avenue, Atlantic Highlands | 732.872.7500 | mastershipwrights.com

ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS The Kid-Powered Food Brigade

In Atlantic Highlands, front porches aren’t just for sitting around. They’re places for inspiration and conversation that become the launching pads for all kinds of activities that bring residents and neighbors together in the Front Porch Club (frontporchclub.com) “to improve the community and have fun. The more the merrier!” And that includes kids! So when the holiday drive got under way in November to benefit the local Food Pantry, a group of friends at the AH Elementary School— kindergarteners to 4th graders—decided to do their part. They went door to door one afternoon and then set up at the holiday tree lighting, filling their wagons with some 200 cans and raising close to $100. “It was the first time I did it and it was fun!” reported Jude Bowbliss. It was the first time, too, for 3rd graders Eddie Payne and Nicholas Bigotto who said “It’s nice to help people. I want to do it again.” Andrew Chiles did do it again with his brother, Benson, and friends on Martin Luther King weekend and collected “a wagon full.”

Two River Realty THE RIGHT MOVE

T

he Little Silver office of Two River Realty has a warm personality that extends a friendly welcome to all who enter. The space itself is cozy, yet spacious with its open floor plan where sales agents share with each other and their clients, free of cubicles and closed doors. This “service center,” as owner and broker Philip Von Schondorf calls it, is a reflection of the attitude of the firm—one of openness, familiarity, and flexibility coupled with high-quality professional services.

Two River Realty specializes in eastern Monmouth County communities with its experienced team members all local experts on Two River Towns on the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers that include Little Silver, Fair Haven, Rumson, Red Bank, Sea Bright, Oceanport, Shrewsbury, and Monmouth Beach, as well as in-land to Middletown, Tinton Falls, and Colts Neck. Philip, with his wife Deborah, opened the firm as a licensed broker in December 2009 after working for a large real estate firm and gaining years of experience. Today, Two River Realty has eighteen full-time real estate professionals and is an established presence in the community. From day one, the goal has been to provide the best for both buyers and sellers by providing flexible brokerage fees (fees are negotiable in the state of New Jersey) and individualized service that means a unique, personalized approach to every client. Philip is an Accredited Buyers Representative who has received special training to work with clients through the most complicated real estate transactions. Buying or selling real estate is a process that requires the right resources to help make informed decisions toward a successful real estate transaction. Using the latest technologies and innovative marketing strategies, Two River Realty has the ability to search for homes, get school and neighborhood reports, and essential real estate information to assure that clients successfully negotiate the entire process. As longtime Little Silver residents, business is home for the Von Schondorfs. “We live, work, and play here,” says Deborah, a former Wall Streeter who manages the administrative duties of the firm. “We take care of people in the area.” Clients become neighbors and friends—folks the Von Schondorfs and their staff see on a regular basis. Being an active part of the community they serve has helped Two River Realty thrive, but as Deborah says, “For us, it’s got to be all about the client, and people know that.” Philip Von Schondorf Two River Realty Owner & Broker Awarded NJAR Association of Realtors Circle of Excellence – Silver 2013

201 PARK AVENUE— a timeless estate

Asymmetrical rooflines—with cross gables and roof sections of different pitch, wings, turrets and bays— create a sense of depth and organic shape.

Formal rooms downstairs are anchored by a huge living hall with a fireplace and adjacent grand staircase.

Extensive porches give a cottage air and connection to the outdoors.

A VERY SPECIAL HOME

The Shingle Style home blossomed in the Victoria era & has been referred to as “the architecture of the American summer.”

T

201 PARK AVENUE | OCEAN/LONG BRANCH

here’s an elegant history of Ocean/Long Branch that lives on in a residential property like the mansion at 201 Park Avenue—or rather “seaside cottage” as such grand retreats were called in the Victoria era when they were being built in places like Newport and South Hampton and Manchester-by-the-Sea for the high-society clients of firms like Peabody & Staems and McKim, Mead & White. An example of the American Shingle Style architecture that emphasized the flow of space, fluent planning, and dramatic internal views, the newly renovated house at 201 Park was designed to enhance the good life with plenty of room, inside and out, for sumptuous living, splendid entertaining, and luxurious relaxing. Sited on 1.35 acres, the house invites the original intent to be enjoyed by its owners today...but with conveniences, renovations and updates that include a thoroughly modern media room, a home theater and seven-zone central air conditioning. The open floor plan—with almost 10,000 square feet of living space and expansive 9-foot ceilings—gives an interior flow that is brightened by dozens of large windows that bring in natural light from the outside. With eleven bedrooms and eight full baths (plus two partials), this single family home is ready for company, family fun, and mega gatherings. There are parlors, porches and decks for lounging, a 30-foot formal dining room, and five fireplaces to add to the pleasure. Despite its grand scale, this style home was designed to convey a sense of informality and be visually at ease in its airy seaside setting. Built at the turn of the century, this is a house that contains the vestiges of another era that continues to fascinate millions of viewers of Downton Abbey—a time when households of a certain station included a serving staff to maintain them and a butler’s pantry, maids quarters, and back staircases so that a guest never bumped into a laundress with a basket of bed linens. Winslow Homer, one of the foremost artists in 19th century American art, stayed in Long Branch in 1869 and painted scenes along the ocean front while world-renown architects like Stanford White designed homes like this one that would capture the period and preserve it for future generations to live in and enjoy.

t makes Gail Doherty happy that more people are taking the initiative to be healthier. Coming into her Good Karma Vegan Café for gourmet vegan, gluten free and wheat free dishes. Eating more fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Curbing their appetites for processed foods and animal proteins. But most of all, she’s glad that she’s finally lightened up and relaxed about the folks who aren’t. “My dogmatic edge is gone,“ she says with a laugh. “People are coming around on their own and I’m just happy to be here showing the way with kindness.” The founder and co-owner, with partner Tiffany Brett, of Good Karma Vegan Café has been eating meat-free herself for decades and feeding people delicious animal-free cuisine in her restaurants for years. Her first restaurant, Down to Earth was on Broad Street. Gail and fellow Natural Gourmet Institute alum, vegan chef, and business partner, Lacey Sher, brought vegan cuisine to detectable new heights and wrote their You Won’t Believe It’s Vegan cookbook as a paean to the period from 1999 to 2006 when they ran New Jersey’s first organic vegan restaurant together. Then, after a few years away in Ashville, Gail returned to Red Bank and opened Good Karma four years ago with Tiffany Brett, another NGI graduate.

The cozy 900 square foot space on Front Street seats twenty people and serves more than 100 lunches and dinners a day, including take-out and quick-stop curbside pick-ups. Close to 100% of everything served is real organic, grown without synthetic chemicals, additives, or fertilizers and bought from local farms in the region. Flavorful, fresh, eco-friendly fare is

“…a great collection of recipes, from earthy to elegant…” - Erick Tucker, Executive Chef at Millennium Restaurant and author of The Artful Vegan the only thing on the menu, from the soup of the day to the decadently delicious Chocolate Ganache Cake. The organic, whole-foods menu is packed with delicious, flavorful world cuisine so tasty that you don’t miss the animal products. Among the best sellers are the Raw Cheese Plate ("Dr. Cow's Raw Cheeses" served on a bed of baby spring mix, crisp apple slices, and homemade gluten-free wheat-free garden flax crackers), the Pineapple Mango Tempeh (coconut crusted tempeh served with jasmine rice and sauteed seasonal vegetables and served with creamy thai coconut sauce and pineapple mango chutney) and the Indian Plate (an Indian inspired tasty plate of curried tofu, jasmine rice, chana masala and sauteed seasonal vegetables. served with banana ginger chutney and toasted garlic herb pita). From vegan versions of classic meat-filled entrees to kid-friendly meals, there’s something for everyone here, whether you are new to vegan cuisine or have been preparing animal-free meals for years. And this summer, look out for Good Karma “pop-ups” in surprise, spontaneous locations around towns like a theater lobby or an outdoor dining space After losing her home in SuperStorm Sandy, Gail has taken a humbling life experience as an opportunity to reach out further into her community, get closer, and do good things, in and out of her kitchen. “I used to just keep cooking with my head down,” she says. “The storm made me look up,” says Gail. “Pop-up, “ she muses. “I like that idea.”

Saturn’s goal is to take the earthy elements of which we are made and change them into the gold of our highest potential.

by ALICE LOFFREDO

SATURN

The Top Personal Trainer on Your Celestial A-Team

M

ost people with even a smidgeon of astrological knowledge will tell you that, of all the planets, it is Saturn that they worry about most and wish would simply “go away” when it pays a visit to their charts. The truth is that this no-nonsense planet has a bad rap.

In its role as the Karmic Teacher, Saturn is a key player on the celestial team that quarterbacks each of us as we try to make the most of this lifetime’s experiences. It helps us identify goals, create strategic and tactical plans to achieve them, and holds us accountable for our progress. Operating like a personal trainer getting an athlete ready for the Olympics, Saturn creates and administers a program designed specifically for each of us, modeling and demanding discipline, hard work, and the achievement of cold, hard results. It operates by creating situations in our biographical lives that draw our attention to areas where we may need to correct course in some manner. These issues manifest so that we can deal with them in the world of the here and now, in pragmatic, common-sense ways. Saturn ways. Of course, it is up to each one of us as to whether or not we will to take on the challenge of the curriculum: do the homework, and pass the tests. Let’s say that you chose to play hooky while Saturn passed through the part of the chart having to do with money, and have spent the last several years dancing between the raindrops of financial disaster: borrowing from Peter (read “plastic”) to pay Paul (the mortgage company); cashing in half of the 401K retirement account (Penalties be damned!) to replace the family jalopy because you can’t get a decent car loan thanks to your horrific credit score. Saturn may just have to dish up the grace of a job loss to get you out of the juggling act and help you start rebuilding from limited, but solid ground. It’s not punishment (though it certainly may feel that way.) It’s simply the delivery of consequences in alignment with the grade on the Karmic Teacher’s report card, in quantities strong and dramatic enough to get your attention. Are these times easy? Of course not. But if you can reframe experience as opportunity and demonstrate that you’re ready to do your part through commitment, responsibility and hard work, Saturn’s discipline and motivation will help you “Ace” the assignment. And if you do, the Karmic Teacher will come through with rewards of success, stability, and security, in nice, tangible, Saturn-loving form.
