Molly Pitcher Marina
verlooking the picturesque Navesink River stands one of America’s most elegant waterfront hotels. Built in 1928, this national landmark echoes the charm and grandeur of the world’s grandest inns. The expansive upgrade of the Molly Pitcher Inn has been no mean feat. The new Molly renovations— an outdoor 17,000 square foot promenade with formal gardens not unlike an exclusive Manhattan terrace, being just one—follow on the heels of a multi-million dollar remake, that was completed in 2009, of the Inn’s sister property just down the road, The Oyster Point Hotel, also owned and operated by JP Barry Hospitality, Inc.
O
Once perceived as a traditional wedding venue, The Oyster Point has adopted a more chic contemporary feel and fun, lively attitude. This redesign and rebranding resulted in a positive impact on our business,” according to Operations Manager Kevin M. Barry. Weddings, restaurant—including the new lounge—and corporate use have increased. Guest rooms now have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river and iPod docks, to name a few enhancements. While improvements remain ongoing, the major work is complete. “It was time to focus on the Molly Pitcher Inn,” Barry explains. Work started on the Molly Pitcher Inn last year with upgrades to lighting in the hotel ballroom Ballroom and banquet space. “While keeping within our traditional heritage,“ he says, “we upgraded to elegant crystal chandeliers for a more luxurious ambiance.” Rich carpeting adorns the ballroom floors, but wall-to-wall has been removed from guest rooms and replaced with new flooring. All soft goods—bedding, draperies, wall paper, shower curtains, lamps—have been replaced and high definition televisions can be found in all of the guest rooms. A new grand promenade—replete with new railings and lamp posts and located off the bar and banquet areas—enables the hotel to realize a long held wish to expand upon the use of its outdoor space and spectacular river views to offer guests an incomparable outdoor experience...from dining seven days a week to outdoor events, including weddings and other special occasions. The new virtually-everything is based largely on customer feedback, along with creative input from staff and management, notes Rainey Alwell, JP Barry Hospitality’s director of sales. “We read our guest comment cards daily, and take them very seriously,” she says. Grand Promenade
International Bar
The Molly’s International Bar draws a large, eclectic clientele from all over the world that mixes with local regulars and weekend wedding groups. “You’ll hear all kinds of different stories and accents,” says Alwell. “Someone from Holland talking to someone from Rumson—very cosmopolitan.” The hotel’s renowned Sunday Brunch has been voted “Best Brunch in Central Jersey” by New Jersey Monthly for 15 consecutive years. Both The Oyster Point Hotel and Molly Pitcher Inn boast their own marinas, and offer seasonal rentals, as well as transient boat slips for dock and dining, a rarity for this part of the Navesink River. In keeping with the “everyday” image, both facilities maintain a full calendar of events. Social Hour at the Molly’s International Bar, for example, features $3 beers and $6 martinis, as well as $8 Shrimp Cocktail and $5 Pecorino & Rosemary Dusted Fries, Monday thru Thursday from 4pm to 7pm. “We’re doing everything we can to make this a place you can go during the week and not just for a special event,” says Kevin. While the two hotels now have extensive renovations in common, they have always shared the same view. As Kevin explains, it’s not just of the beautiful Navesink River, but towards the standards of quality and service they offer to their guests.

GOOD VIBRATIONS RED BANK HOLISTIC LEARNING CENTER
A
rts, entertainment, dining, special events, cultural happenings, song writers in the park, entertainers on the street...Red Bank has them all, and more, to offer as attractive reasons to come to town, but, thanks to the Red Bank Holistic Learning Center (RBHLC), Tibetan monks performing Buddhist ceremonies and angel channelers tuning into the heavenly realm, on-going metaphysical connectors and “soul smorgasbords” are now in the mix. The Center is a work in progress that has the potential of expanding the definition of Red Bank as a regional destination for mind/body/spirit development. According to founder Jeff Cherney, the current robust calendar of programs being offered is just the beginning of a concept that came in through the side door of his career as a pharmacist in Manhattan. A business acquisition brought with it Best of Nature, a supply company with a wholesale line for the massage and body work market that included clays, seaweeds, oils and other products. Although he still holds his pharmacist license, Jeff’s interest has turned toward the

The remaining space is a warren of rooms for classes and programs in a wide range of subjects from continuing education for massage therapists to a variety of classes and workshops for yoga and fitness, energy healing, spiritual development and personal improvement. A roster of more than twenty-five instructors is on the website (rbhlc.com), along with bios that present the backgrounds for Feng Shui consultants and energy clearers, spiritual facilitators, Reiki Masters, clairvoyants, healers, life coaches, yoga instructors, aura readers, a trademarked Inner Angel Alchemist to “tune in with the heavenly realm for help, healing and divine guidance,” and a growing list of other practitioners of holistic healing modalities. Recently, Laraine Schigotzki brought To Your Health Holistic Spa and Wellness Center to the RBHLC, leasing the facility three days a week to offer spa services (facials, massage and body treatments using only all-natural and/or organic ingredients), as well as holistic health counseling, energy healing, and yoga and fitness classes. “We all innately have a wisdom we can learn to tap into, “says Laraine. “I grew up understanding the relationship we have to our own healing and to nature. It’s in my DNA to pass it on and educate people on how to benefit themselves.” Jeff Cherney opened up his doors, on an hourly rental basis, to welcome practitioners who shared his idea of creating a place where people could come be part of a community dedicated to a holistic route to wellness. The Red Bank Holistic Learning Center might be off the beaten track, but people are finding a way to its door.

THE NEW SURGICAL DAY STAY OPENS AT RIVERVIEW MEDICAL CENTER
Patients and loved ones will be greeted by a team member when they enter the oversized surgical waiting area. This area offers lounge style comfortable chairs, a flat screen television, calming fish tank, and nourishment area to provide a more relaxed “at home” feel.
A BIGGER, BETTER PLACE FOR HEALING
by TOM PAOLELLA for Riverview Medical Center Last spring, Riverview Medical Center announced the creation of a nearly 22,000 square foot center for surgical excellence to be constructed in the Blaisdell Pavilion, on the Medical Center campus, supported by the Riverview Medical Center Capital Campaign, Life. Changing. Riverview is pleased to announce that the first phase of this expansion, the new Surgical Day Stay, is open and caring for the community.
“Surgical Day Stay at Riverview has a long history of delivering exceptional pre and post surgical care and service to the communities it serves,” says Timothy J. Hogan, FACHE, regional president for Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital. “Environment of care plays a significant role in the total hospital experience and the new area affords Riverview an increased opportunity to provide our patients and families with a personalized health care experience in a more comfortable and healing environment. In addition, the relocated and renovated Surgical Day Stay will keep Riverview on the leading-edge in the delivery of care and surgical innovation and education.” “Over the past three years, Riverview’s surgical volume has grown by more than 20% and has created a need to improve and enhance our current operations,” says John Rose, M.D., chairman of surgery at Riverview Medical Center. “The establishment of this high-tech facility is the next step in advancing the Medical Center’s mission to provide exceptional care to the community in an environment that is comfortable and close to home. Riverview continues to make significant advances in surgery and we are looking forward to the completion of the next phases of our expansion project for improving surgical services.”
FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE NEW SURGICAL DAY STAY AT RIVERVIEW MEDICAL CENTER VISIT | www.RiverviewMedicalCenter.com
The new space is designed with the patient in mind. Once in the unit, patients will be placed in one of 23 new healing areas. Each space is equipped with a 26” television, along with individually keyed lockers for personal items, and comfortable chairs for family or friends. To create a more healing environment, each area will also have three options for overhead lighting that can be controlled by the patient. After a procedure, should the surgeon wish to discuss private matters with the family, a new private consultation room is available within the space.

C ROSSIN G AFFORDABLE HOUSING FINDS A HOME IN RED BANK
The Red Bank Affordable Housing Corporation (RBAHC) was established in the spring of 2007,
H
ope and faith might very well be the imaginary cornerstone at the brand new town home of Rose Gomez, 38, a first time homeowner. This past December, she moved into one of the 36-units of Cedar Crossing of Red Bank, the newly constructed, affordable housing devlopment located on Cedar Street on the west side of town.
The single mother of two daughters—Fatima, 21 (who attends Bloomfield College) and Ashonti, 17—Gomez’s journey to homeownership was fraught with staggering burdens that might have caused the average person to falter along the way. First there was the eviction notice that Gomez received from one landlord. Relocating, she had to share the tight quarters of a one-bedroom apartment with her daughters. Meanwhile, she was amassing bad credit.
Rose Gomez
for the purpose developing affordable housing opportunities for low and moderate income families in the city of Red Bank.
“Thank God for Pastor Porter,” said Gomez, who is a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Red Bank, where Reverend Terrence K. Porter presides. Appointed by Red Bank Mayor, Pasquale Menna, Porter—president and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Red Bank Affordable Housing Corporation (RBAHC), the developer of Cedar Crossing—encouraged his parishioner to enter into the lottery pool of applicants vying for one of the new units. In the October 10, 2010 lottery, Gomez drew lucky number 22 which allowed her to start the application process. “I went to credit counseling seminars and cleaned up my credit,” said Gomez, who is employed at Riverview Medical Center. “I was then put in touch with the New Jersey Mortgage and Finance Company that helped us through the process.”
According to Porter, all municipalities need to have a plan for affordable housing. The vision for affordable housing in Red Bank started under Red Bank’s former mayor, Edward McKenna, and was embraced by Mayor Menna. Through a land acquisition grant of $2.3 million that the city received from former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine’s administration, Cedar Crossing broke ground. In order to obtain the resources to have the homes built, The Red Bank Affordable Housing Corporation partnered with the Housing, Mortgage, and Finance Agency of New Jersey, the Monmouth County CHOICE Program, and Investors Bank that provided construction loans. It was important to Porter that Cedar Crossing not be rental space but rather homes that would be purchased. “If they were rentals, I wasn’t going to get involved,” said Porter. “There’s a renter’s mentality that doesn’t always buy into community. In order to develop a quality community to allow them (homeowners) to become vested in the community as property owners and tax payers, it [Cedar Crossing] had to be homeownership.” The homes range in price from $72,000 to $165,000, with consideration in pricing given to a homeowner’s financial eligibility. For Rose Gomez and her family, owning a home is living a dream that’s now come true with hope, faith, and help from the Red Bank Affordable Housing Corporation.

Don’t Stop the Music Funds Needed for Jazz in the Park Fans of Jazz in the Park—the popular free summer outdoor concert series in Red Bank’s Riverside Gardens Park—might be in for disappointing Thursday nights this August. For the first time in almost twenty years since the popular music program came to town, sponsorship funding is not hitting the bank notes needed for its standard two months of programming.
Jazz in the Park has long been a collaborative effort between the Red Bank Parks and Recreation Department, Comcast, and Brookdale Community College, with Comcast being the lead sponsor for years. Of the $25,000 needed for a full calendar of concerts to continue, Comcast is providing $5,000 for the 2012 season. Parks and Rec can fill in some of the gap to assure that the concerts go on in July, but August is not in the budget…yet. Cheryl Cummings, Executive Director of the Brookdale Network, has been a member of the steering committee for music programming in the park since its inception. “Jazz in the Park is well attended and very much appreciated,“ she explains. “It’s a great sponsorship opportunity for any company that wants community presence.” The lion’s share of the budget goes for staging, sound and lighting— non-negotiable costs. Red Bank Parks and Recreation Director Memone Crystian is working out logistics, dates and details with headliners for the July concerts. “The musicians have been terrific,” she says. “They’re working with the situation and I’m really thankful.” On Friday nights, Songwriters in the Park is on schedule for the summer. The sidewalks of Red Bank will be alive with music and entertainment on Saturday nights in June, July and August when Red Bank RiverCenter presents
StreetLife, now in its 12th year. The Red Bank Public Library is planning a series of big band concerts in the park to celebrate its 75th anniversary. But in Count Basie’s hometown, funding for Jazz in the Park needs to pick up the tempo. Sponsors are needed. All contributions help.
“Arts build communities and, during the tough times, it’s what gets us through.” Cheryl Cummings for Jazz in the Park 22

alk to the town dock at the end of Fair Haven Road, and with a little imagination you can see the steamship Albertina leaving nearby Chandler’s Dock (built in the late 1840s) with a load of Navesink River oysters bound for New York City. Come back, say, in the years before the turn of the 20th century, and watch the vaudevillians debark and head for the Atlantic Hotel (today the Nauvoo Grill Club) up on Fair Haven Road. Mix up your time travel, and you might run into Vince Lombardi, who lived here while coaching with the New York Giants in the mid-1950s.
W
With a history as rich as that of Fair Haven, there’s much to celebrate, and that’s just what Fair Haven is doing. The borough, whose first permanent dwelling dates to 1816, was incorporated in 1912 (the Albertina was depicted on the town’s official seal in 1962), is throwing a year-long Centennial bash with scheduled monthly events that, so far, have included a January kick-off reorganization meeting at Bicentennial Hall, a school assembly writing contest and photo contest in February, the Centennial Gala in March, and publication of a Taste of Fair Haven Cookbook in April. May features a Concert of the Century on the19th at the Fair Haven Dock, with three local bands offering a wide range of music, followed by a grand Centennial Celebration June 16 complete with a parade, picnic, games, music and more—all free. There’s a July Regatta, a Centennial Night at the Fireman’s Fair in August, a garden party, golf tournament, lecture series…the celebrating continues into December culminating with a holiday open house. The idea for a big Centennial celebration belongs, primarily, to Michael Halfacre, former Mayor and former President of the Foundation, according to present Fair Haven Mayor Benjamin Lucarelli. “A 100th anniversary is a 100th anniversary, and it’s an excellent opportunity to celebrate the town and all the wonderful things we enjoy here,” says the Mayor, pointing out that the Centennial, as with most endeavors in the borough, is driven entirely by volunteers—“the backbone of our municipality”—and thus it is a good time to honor them as well. Michael was also the driving force behind forming the Foundation of Fair Haven, which is a volunteer group and is responsible for raising funds for the Centennial efforts (its first major project). The Foundation officially was formed in 2009, and will continue on well after the Centennial celebrations are over, according to Borough Councilwoman Susan Sorensen, who serves as the Foundation’s President. It is hoped that the Foundation will back other events unique to Fair Haven, helping offset costs that otherwise might be borne by the borough, she notes. Scholarships are under consideration as well. “We’ve had a lot of help from the Fair Haven Business Association whose members have been instrumental in working with us,” says Susan. The Centennial Celebration, as it unfolds, has generated much enthusiasm. More than 300 attended the March Gala alone, which featured visiting dignitaries including state Senator Joe Kyrillos and Grace Hanlon, New Jersey’s director for tourism. “Our aim is to develop outstanding events that leave the participants with a strong sense of pride toward the Borough and a lasting memory of this historic occasion,” notes Fair Haven’s web site. For the complete Centennial Celebration schedule, updates, and related information, go to FairHavenNJ.org.
Centennial Gala | FAIR HAVEN Hundreds of neighbors, local business owners and community leaders gathered at the Raven & the Peach March 10th for “the night of the century” that brought lovers of Fair Haven together to celebrate their town’s Centennial year with an evening that included dancing to the River Road Band, a silent auction featuring art with a focus on Fair Haven and the surrounding area, and a live auction.

PRESSING
MATTERS by CJ ANSORGE
Forty-five years of continuous service to the dry cleaning needs of her neighbors pleasantly blur the line between business and pleasure. “Sarah Devlin used to get off bus and play here,” Vicky recalls. “The kids would hide in the boxes when customers came in. The day Sarah was getting married, she got a big lipstick stain on the front of her wedding dress. She stopped here on the way to the church, in one of those antique cars that went five miles and hour. I ran out to the car, took the spot out, and she went on her way.” Sam Jones, presser, has been on the Flair team since 1980.
ow can a gal who grew up in the wide-open spaces of a cattle ranch in northern California find happiness inside the (almost) windowless world of a busy cleaners in Fair Haven, New Jersey? For Vicky Heard, the answer comes as easily as her ever-ready smile: bring your own sunshine with you wherever you go. For Vicky, that has meant making a big place for her family, friends, pets and community—in other words, all her loved ones—at Flair Cleaners, the business she has owned at 761 River Road since 1967.
H
May 1 marks the anniversary of the day she and her first husband, Kenneth Brett, a master tailor, opened their business in Fair Haven. Together they ran it and raised their two daughters, Liz and Corrie, until his passing in 1990. “I remember I worked to within hours of Elizabeth’s delivery, “says Vicky, “and then I kept a crib at the cleaners. It’s always been our home base.”
Fair Haven playmates lunching al fresco at Flair (circa 1976): Nicole Rice (now, owner of Coastal Décor on River Road), Liz Brett (U of Penn graduate and mother of Vicky’s two grandchildren), and Brian Rice (financial advisor, Twin Lights Financial, Tinton Falls).
Flair team, front and center: Sam Jones, Josh Lukert, Vicky Heard, Walter Jones, Susan Hartsgrove, Reyna Vera, Joseph Gutridge and Christopher Keeton (not pictured).
For all the touches of home at Flair—like Vicky’s blooming sidewalk garden out front, the steady stream of rescued animals (including, recently, 57 kittens adopted out of the shop and Claudette, the white bull dog who took up permanent residence), and a bulletin board loaded with photos of local friends and families—this is a hard-working environment with a staff of eight that delivers dry-cleaning and laundry services to thousands of customers who depend on them.
With the exception of laundered shirts, all work is done on premises. Dry cleaning, spot cleaning, pressing, laundry services…every garment is handfinished and touched-up with a hand iron. Vicky does free home delivery herself to regular house accounts in the local area. After decades of encounters, there isn’t a stain she hasn’t met, and, if at all possible, conquered. “Fabrics play an important part in what they’ll release in the way of stains,“ she explains. “And red wine is a killer.” By Vicky’s account, hundreds of thousands of soiled shirts have entered her doorway over the years, only to leave cleaned and ready for action. It continues to be her pleasure to make it happy for them—and countless other items—to be taken to the cleaners.

A WINNING TICKET LITTLE SILVER FAMILY PHARMACY
O
n March 18, a woman from Tinton Falls walked into the Little Silver Family Pharmacy, out with her prescription—and what she later learned was the winning ticket in a Powerball lottery drawing. When Matt Parisi, manager of the family-owned pharmacy, heard the news the next morning, “I was just screaming. I couldn’t believe it!,” he recalls. Neither could Celeste Tamburello, having just won $70 million.
Celeste Tamburello bought her $70 million Powerball winning lottery ticket at her long-time favorite pharmacy.
L-R: Joe San Diego (customer service/ medical equipment specialist), Tamara Fawal (Rutger’s pharmacy extern), Amanda Muscillo and Erica Snyder (customer service), Mariza Wyckoff (veteran pharmacy technician), pharmacist Ross Brown (has practiced here since the store opened), Alison Major (registered pharmacist/ Pharm D, who started here when she was 16), and Patrick Noble (customer service).
“You can’t ask for better advertising than that,” Matt adds, of all the media attention, or a better customer, for that matter: Celeste had been making the trip to the Little Silver Family Pharmacy for years. This is not unusual, someone eschewing closer-to-home pharmacies in favor of this one. As Matt explains, customers come from Lincroft, Oceanport, Red Bank, Eatontown, Middletown. One regular, a woman who had moved from the area and whose husband recently was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, now drives a good 40 minutes to get here. Why? “She had tried everything around her and wasn’t getting the service that she used to get here,” Matt says simply. “She trusts us, counts on us, and feels comfortable with us.” Being privately owned, like Little Silver Family Pharmacy, has its advantages: all decisions can be made inhouse, quickly, and without jumping through hoops for corporate okays, whether it is the cost of non-insurancepaid pharmaceuticals, the selection of shelf stock, or involvement in the Matt Parisi (manager/owner) community. “As a familyrun business we have the kind of stake in the community that chains don’t,” he says. “We’re here to stay.” Matt, his sister, brother-in-law, father, and a few other non-family partners, together or in part, own three pharmacies (one in Lyndhurst, and two in Newark), along with the Little Silver location. Matt’s father, Matthew Parisi—a respected long-time pharmacist in Newark— bought the enterprise in June of 1999. “He loved the town, loved the community,” Matt said of his father. Initially, the new owners filled 40 to 60 prescriptions a day but that soon changed. Five or six years later, in one year alone, business increased ten-fold. “Right now we are at a great growth pace, each year expanding steadily,” says Matt, who took over operations full time in about 2004. Today, the store is stocked with everything from toys, gifts, and cards to medical supplies, products for expectant mothers—and full prescription drug services. “We want our customers leaving with a smile on their face; I mean that literally, and we see that happening,” says Matt with pride. “It’s very gratifying.” LITTLE SILVER FAMILY PHARMACY | 10 Church Street, Little Silver 732.741.1121 | littlesilverfamilypharmacy.com 39

THE NEW
ZEBU by CJ ANSORGE
A BIG STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
RH3_12_PGS38_48_Layout 1 4/27/12 10:31 AM Page 41
I
n downtown Red Bank, businesses open and close, expand and contract, but moving a full-blown food service operation a few hundred feet down Broad Street almost never happens. The recent move of ZEBU Forno from 20 to 12 Broad Street is one of those exceptions and owner Andrew Gennusa considers it one of the luckiest moves of his entrepreneurial life. “My expectation here,“ he says, enthusiastically, about his new space, “is to double the business.” If the bustling lunch crowd around him is any indication, he’s on his way.
THE ORIGINAL The new location opened March 1, 2012, almost eleven years, to the day, that ZEBU Forno first opened its oven doors (forno means oven in Italian) to serve up piping hot pizza in a self-service, congenial, art-filled environment. The board of fare featured breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, pastries and sundries, along with soft drinks and all the coffee you could drink. Always intended to be a community gathering place, ZEBU became a networking Mecca as well. “There were high-level headhunters who did every single interview in ZEBU for years,“ he reports. “It was a suit-and-laptop office for a lot of people, in all kinds of companies...publishing, real estate... some of them seven days a week.” Business professionals and downtown shoppers, moms with baby strollers and kids after school, young couples and retirees, breakfast clubbers and families out together—people came to meet and eat and ZEBU expanded to make room for them. “From 2001, when we opened,” explains Andrew,“ through 2008, everything was terrific. Then the economy went south. People stopped patronizing the town and business changed.” Although some businesses chose the exit route, Andrew stayed the course through 2011 when, for the first time in years, he saw store vacancies being filled without others leaving, a steady pick up in shopper traffic, and an opportunity for a rebirth of his own business— starting with an attractive real estate package for a new Broad Street location where he could put into practice important lessons he had learned. As one of the original founders of Manhattan Bagel, Andrew’s experience had taught him that businesses
evolve—take the best and move it forward, as you revise a better and better concept.
the order of the day and night; ZEBU is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (BYOB).
THE REBIRTH
Cooking is still done on premises in a full-view kitchen that includes the forno from the original ZEBU. “Everything is highest quality and done ‘old school,’” says Andrew. “Our mozzarella is made from our own hand-blended curd. We are constantly regenerating the masa madre (the yeast based starter dough) used in our artisan breads.“
“I know that I love making people happy,” he says, “and I love making them happy in Red Bank. Staying in town was important. We could have taken ZEBU anywhere, but we have such a connection to this town. People wanted us here and we wanted to be here.” 3,000 square feet of prime Broad Street space sealed the deal.
Andrew Gennusa
The “we” at ZEBU now includes Andrew’s wife of twenty-one years, Carole, who often can be seen in front of the counter orchestrating a positive customer experience. “I’m not a wife here,” she explains, “but a very important customer.” With years in direct sales, her focus is to make sure that positive is the only experience a customer ever has. Making ZEBU more of a full-service environment was part of that order. In the new ZEBU, customers place an order at the counter, find a seat, and then enjoy the experience of a fullservice restaurant. There is still a self-service coffee counter and takeout orders, but table service is now
Along with popular ZEBU pizzas and paninis, the expanded menu now includes new taste-tested lunch items and dinner entrées. “We listen to our customers,” say Carole, “and put new items on our menu that they asked for like the Eggplant Delight sandwich and our killer White Baked Mac & Cheese entrée made with white cheddar, white American, and parmesan cheese.” The single most popular pizza is still the classic Napoletano—a hand tossed thin crust pie topped with San Marzano tomato sauce and whole milk shredded mozzarella. Carole’s favorite is the White Pizza topped with fresh mozzarella, provolone, and parmesan. According to Andrew the ZEBU Carbonara—chicken, bacon, onion, whole tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and garlic in cream sauce—is number one in the pasta department. When you walk into ZEBU Forno these days, there’s a familiar sense of place, thanks, in part, to the colorful, witty Gregg Hinlicky murals on the walls that still characterize the space, but a new lift and lightness are unmistakable. The buzz is back—the happy sound of people gathering—better than ever, and the Gennusas love the sound.

On June 11, expect the pace of life and communication to accelerate big-time when Jupiter enters the communicative, sociable, curious, on-the-move sign of Gemini…and stays
I
n astrology’s medieval times, the planet Jupiter was called the Greater Benefic, there until June 25, 2013. the universal source of good fortune, benevolence, and optimism. Centuries later, the nickname still holds up. The fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet in our solar system (twice as massive as all the planets combined), extroverted, expansive Jupiter takes twelve years to spin merrily around the zodiac. The planet in charge of making sure we include pleasure and play on our “TO DO” list, it invites each of us to join in at the party of life. Also the philosopher of the zodiac, Jupiter urges us to have new adventures that expand our horizons beyond what we already know, to have faith in the goodness of life now, and in how it can be in the future.
Gemini
by ALICE LOFFREDO
JUMPIN’ JUPITER!
The characteristics of Gemini—the third of the twelve signs of the astrological zodiac—are associated with the planet Mercury, named for the messenger of the gods. Mercury’s job was to move between the depths of Hades and the heights of Olympus, the mountain home of the gods, with many stops on the earthly plane. Travelling at lightning speed, he gathered information from one realm and distributed it to another, linking the human and the divine. Any planet in the sign of Gemini will be expressed in mercurial fashion, and when the planet in question is expansive Jupiter, you can simply take those qualities to the “nth” degree. So after June 11, expect words, words, words, all the time, everywhere: e-mailing and texting (and you can count on more and more of the dreaded FWD: subject lines showing up in those e-mails.); phone calls and meetings; chitting and chatting. With the “dot connecting” philosopher planet in the sign of the curious, “dot collecting” communicator, there will be lots of new ideas to explore, leading to more and more information coming in so quickly that, unless we’re very careful, it will be misinterpreted or lost altogether. Let’s hope Google is expanding its capability to handle all the increased traffic!
Astro Intro If you could observe the motion of the Sun against the stars for an entire year, it would appear to trace out a large circle in the sky that is called the ecliptic. The zodiac is a thin band of the sky on either side of the ecliptic that encompasses the apparent paths of all the planets. (The word zodiac means "circle of life.") For astrological purposes, the zodiac is divided into 12 constellations or signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Astrology interprets and explains the influence of the planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by examining the positions and angles they form with each other in the sky as seen from Earth.
Our collective urge for pleasure and living life to the fullest expands as well. We’re all going to be more on the move and more sociable, for sure, but we’ll also want to be travelling. Jupiter loves travelling far and wide (like to Paris or Tibet), and Gemini travels as well, just preferring to venture closer to home (like maybe a couple of states away.)
Jupiter
But even the Greater Benefic can have a dark side, and, for Jupiter in Gemini, the coin of that realm is excess: love of life and pleasure morphing into extravagance, irresponsibility, and waste; information overload leading to intellectual and psychological meltdown; communication that becomes a meaningless Tower of Babel; an activity pace that accelerates to debilitating exhaustion. However, if we pay attention and put on the brakes before life becomes the energetic equivalent of a bad day at NASCAR, Jupiter in Gemini can bestow gifts of a deeper understanding of life and your place in it; of insight and information just how and when you need it; of everyone in, and not out, of each communication loop they belong in, and of experiencing a sheer, clear feeling of being just so happy to be alive. Have a great Jupiter-in-Gemini year!
