Set on the campus of a New England, liberal arts college, professor Laurie Jameson (played by Annette O’Toole), accuses one of her students—an outwardly stereotypical jock nicknamed, ‘Third’—of plagiarism, and as a result throws her own life into disarray. A masterpiece about the dangers of identity politics and stereotypes, Third is also a moving, witty and funny play written by one of the best loved writers of the modern theater.

SECTION RED BANK

by ALISON BEEBER he Rockin’ Red Bank Country Festival is the hot new sound on the growing playlist of big-league special events that bring tens of thousand people to town for plenty of fun, food, and free music. Bracketed by the Red Bank International Flavour Festival in the spring (April) and The Red Bank Guinness Oyster Festival in the fall (September), the eat-drink-and-be-merry combo takes on a new twang with the Country Festival the last weekend in June, a kick-off to summer in a calendar slot formerly filled by the Red Bank Kaboom Fireworks. The main stage set up is in Marine Park overlooking the Navesink with Nashville recording star Maggie Rose the headliner on Saturday night. The two day event features country, country rock, folk, Americana and bluegrass musicians including After the Reign, Ronnie Brandt & Freewheelin', Madeline Smith, Scott DeCarlo, Citizens Band Radio, Tequila Rose, NashEast, Harper's Fellow and more. Non-stop live country music by local and national acts starts at noon and goes on into the night. Plus, line dancing and cowboy sing-a-long, specialty vendors, activities for kids of all ages, and twenty of Red Bank's finest restaurants and eateries serving up country fare at the outdoor food court. With Miller Lite a presenting sponsor, beers are on tap. Produced by Red Bank RiverCenter in cooperation with Red Bank Flavour and promoter Rue Events, the hard work behind the scenes of a major festival like this one is in experienced hands. “Big outdoor festivals require a tremendous amount of coordination,“ say James Scavone, RiverCenter, excutive director. “We’re uniquely geared for it and there’s the big payoff of bringing thousands of people to town for a wonderful Red Bank experience.” Borough-based beneficiaries of the fundraiser include the Red Bank Public Library, Red Bank Public School libraries, Red Bank Fire Department, Red Bank RiverCenter and Red Bank Flavour.

JIM & ROBIN FITZMAURICE Ying and yang, sweet and sour. Complementary opposites do stand out. Take Robin and Jim Fitzmaurice of Rumson. They’re of the left-and-right-brained variety, which, in a marriage pushing 35 years, has worked out nicely in a two-halves-make-a-no-holds-barred manner where the sum is greater than the parts. Truly. Ask them. “It’s like we’re a team, but we’re playing different sports,” says Jim, the creative one. “I don’t have a creative bone in me,” says Robin. “But I think Jim has some respect for the way I think and try to analyze things.” Robin, of course, handles household logistics. They’ve lived in Rumson for nearly 30 years and have two grown children. Robin, by the way, is vice president of Two River Community Bank; treasurer of the downtown business alliance, Red Bank RiverCenter; and serves on seven non-profit boards. “I don’t know how the hell she does it, to be honest,” allows Jim. At one time Robin was on as many as twelve. Robin: “I kind of play the devil’s advocate on everything while Jim thinks of the wonderful creative sides of things.” Jim: “I wouldn’t be able to really do what I do if it wasn’t for my honey. I’m a very lucky man.” What Jim does—and Robin prefers the focus be on him—encompasses an array of artistic pursuits that includes sculpting, stone carving, jewelry design, drawing, painting murals (his work can be found throughout the area), you name it. “I’m compulsively creative, I suppose,” he says, noting that even as a kid growing up in Matawan where he met Robin, a Springfield native who relocated there during high school, he was always “painting and drawing, designing and building stuff.” A former design build contractor, he transitioned into a decorative artist in 1992. Jim’s a founding member of Cre8tive Sculpture, a sculpture co-op studio in Long Branch, and over the past fifteen years has designed and installed numerous interactive exhibits, along with related murals, at the Monmouth Museum on the Brookdale Community College campus in Lincroft, where he sits on the building and grounds committee. He’s also on the Historic Preservation Commission in Rumson. Robin’s the beach person, Jim the home lawn-guy tinkerer, though he’s an avid runner, in-line skater, and loves the woods. And they are both, while independent, very social. At the moment, Jim has a commission to do a bronze sculpture for a church, and is working on a project to provide funding for the creation of public art. As for Robin, she’s got a bank to help run—and a meeting or three.

KELLI O’BRIEN Some impressions are indelible, engendered in this case, by a root beer float. Back in the late 1990s, while

RIVERVIEW MEDICAL CENTER

studying to become a registered dietitian, Kelli O’Brien was at a hospital visiting her terminally ill father. He wanted nothing more than the frothy elixir, and rather than lecture about health implications, the staff RD immediately went out and bought him one. “We knew he wasn’t going to be with us much longer and all we wanted was for him to be happy,” explains Kelli. The dietitian understood this, and acted from the heart. A small gesture, perhaps, but one that Kelli will never forget. “I keep that with me always, because everything I do is really about the patient experience,” says Kelli, who today is the chief operating officer at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. “If I can impact that patient experience one little bit, then I’m doing my job.” The role of a COO is generally highly situational, which describes Kelli’s job to a T. Her day starts at seven to handle myriad responsibilities that often are in flux. The early start allows her to spend time with doctors, patients, “team members” (staff), and be out in the community in which Riverview—having grown from a local hospital to a leading, technologically advanced medical center—plays such a vital role. Riverview has been Kelli’s home for virtually her entire professional career—testament to its commitment to the nurturing of its employees and Kelli’s love of the facility and surrounding area. The East Brunswick native lives, today, in Little Silver with her husband and two young twin boys, and is a graduate of Rutgers University, where she studied nutritional science. Although Kelli completed her internship at Montclair State, she served most of it at Riverview. She was hired, in 1997, to run the food and nutrition program, and the dietetic program at Riverview’s former nursing home in Red Bank; less than two years later, she was in charge of the hospital cafeteria. In 2001 Kelli was asked to head the guest relations program, and in 2005, the same year she received her MBA from Farleigh Dickenson, became senior director of surgical services. As chief operating officer, she joined the Riverview Medical Center Executive Team reporting directly to the president. “I’ve always been interested in leadership. I love the responsibility, working with teams,” she notes—ensuring Riverview’s profitability, fine-tuning the patient experience, exploring new programs and services. “It’s exciting to work with an organization that’s always looking to move forward,” says Kelli. “It’s very fastpaced and energetic, and I’ve been challenged every day. There’s nowhere I’d rather be.”

AMY MANOR People often ask Amy Manor what kind of interior designer she is. “So what do you do? Traditional? Contemporary? What’s your style?” explains the owner of the studio that bears her name at 12 West Front Street. “And I always say, ‘I have no style. I’m a blank canvass. My style evolves with the client.’” It’s not, really, the usual way of doing business in an industry full of designers all-too quick to offer their own style as inspired solution to a client’s needs, as though even those needs were their own.

INTERIOR DESIGNER

Amy is different; she gets involved, asks questions—“How do you want the room to function? What’s your budget? What do you like?” She listens, and comes to know the client and family; the other day she was busy texting with some of one’s kids. She draws upon her deep professional experience for guidance to assure that all decisions make sense, throughout a process that is as rewarding as it can be demanding. “I can’t start unless I have all this information. I get inspired by my clients and their challenges, and that’s how I go to work.” Amy’s work—her passion—began in the fashion industry in the late 1980s under iconic fashion designer Georges Marciano (co-founder of Guess), serving as regional manager of visual merchandizing for over 500 of his showrooms. This was a time that saw high-end designers begin their move into the home-store, interior furnishings market. With Ralph Lauren, she notes, think a mix of casual mid-century modern; or Calvin Kline: a paucity of color and simple clean lines. Amy, a pioneering, keen-eyed risk taker—“I love the journey of finding new product and what the next trend is”—was right there with them. “I could see the connection, the influence of how people live and dress, how it all trickles into interior design,” she says, “and where I could take it.” After working for different firms in the Red Bank area, she opened Amy Manor Interior Design in 2008. While most designers have an office, Amy maintains, as a client resource, an exquisitely outfitted showroom. She carries what’s trending and best: the Christopher Guy, Arbol Flooring, Shine by S.H.O, and the luxe Dorya handcrafted furniture line. “I’m always looking for what’s most intriguing,” she notes, which has her globe hopping in search of new brands, artisans, and vendors. She considers her longtime vendors as part of the team. “I just love what I do, the space planning, the creative design and implementation, all of it,” she says. “I don’t feel like I’m working.”

DR. DAVID DUPREE Patients don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care, maintains David Dupree, who, as a surgeon, is profoundly aware

SURGEON

why this reality is vital to his career and sense of self. He points to a group photo on his office desk. The inscription reads: “Thank you for saving Jenny’s life. You are, without a doubt, the best of the best.” David is rocking back and forth in his chair, keeping time with another 100-hour work week, explaining that when he studied for the general surgery boards in 2011,his notebook entries were color-coded, straight-lined perfection and that one mistake meant a re-do of the entire page. In the photo, Jenny’s dad is far right; he is retiring as the oldest, highest ranking Navy SEAL in commission. The others are bin Laden’s nemesis, Navy SEAL Team Six. Jenny had fallen in a boat. Unresponsive in the ER, a call went out over the hospital PA system for a surgeon. Fate had it that David was in the building. Jenny was bleeding to death: he had 20 seconds. In a state of calm clarity, eyes closed, he reached inside and found the torn vessel and clamped it. Then he got to work. Three hours later, Jenny was in the ICU watching a Mets game. “That probably was the biggest save of my career,” he says. Thus far. If that was the biggest save, then the case of the woman with the 51-pound tumor he operated on at Riverview Medical Center brought him the most notoriety. He was Googled some three million times and featured in media around the world. David didn’t earn a cent. With a nickname like Dr. Dofree, he’s clearly not in it for the money. “It’s a privilege,” he explains. “I awaken each day and thank God I’m a surgeon.” He inherited this passion for serving others from his father, a diesel mechanic, who routinely did “heroic things” for people in Ogdensburg, New York, where David grew up. His journey to get through medical school, after ten years as a respiratory therapist, was circuitous and challenging. He commuted to classes in the Caribbean on a donkey, and put in another two years in the South Bronx, sleeping in his car before moving to matchbook quarters near a boiler room. He trained at Monmouth Medical Center for six years of residency and was accepted for a speciality train position at the prestigious Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School, turning it down to spend more time at home in Fair Haven with his wife, Kelly, and their young children. Today, he is affiliated with both Riverview Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center. “As a solo general surgeon, I’m a dinosaur,” he says at the ripe age of 41, with no intentions of becoming extinct. Still rocking in his chair, he points to a neat stack of patient charts. “These are people who have been operated on nine and ten times, who have lost all hope—and are coming to me.”

THE by TOM CHESEK

For actor-director MICHAEL C

H

e’s a veteran of nearly twenty Broadway shows; performing star turns in everything from Shakespearean tragedies (Timon of Athens) and historical dramas (Copenhagen), to Tin Pan tunefests (42nd Street) and other musical flights of fancy (Sunday in the Park with George)—in the process earning a Tony nomination for 2012’s End of the Rainbow.

He’s worked with some of today’s most acclaimed theatrical directors, from the West End of London to the East Coast’s premier regional playhouses—in addition to enjoying recurring roles on hit TV series (All My Children, Boardwalk Empire, Star Trek Voyager), and sharing the screen with various crowned heads of Hollywood. Oh, and he’s snared himself an Obie award as well, for playing no less melancholy a Dane than Hamlet. But don’t for a moment doubt Michael Cumpsty when he stands on the stage of Red Bank’s Two River Theater and declares, “This is where I want to be…I fell in love with this theater.”

THIRD May 31–June 22 By Wendy Wasserstein Directed by Michael Cumpsty Two River Theater Rechnitz Theater tworivertheater.org

Am American citizen since the aftermath of 9/11, the 54-year old native of Yorkshire has, for the past few years, divided his time between NYC and his Middletown Township home. “I am very fortunate to be here,” says the actor who, last year, fulfilled a long-standing desire to take on the work of Noel Coward, when Two River cast him in the lead role of the sparkling and sophisticated Present Laughter. The Coward comedy marked Cumpsty’s second mainstage production on Bridge Avenue following a 2011 turn as Benedick in a Much Ado About Nothing. For his third major engagement in Red Bank, the actor turns director—a role that he previously performed when he officially co-directed the 2007 Classic Stage Company production of the Bard’s Richard III—with an intriguing (and aptly named) choice: Third, the final finished work of the late Wendy Wasserstein. In the 2004 script by the Tony and Pulitzer winning author of The Sisters Rosensweig and The Heidi Chronicles, middle aged liberal arts college professor Laurie Jameson finds her most fundamental beliefs and philosophies shaken by the arrival of a student named Woodson Bull III—the “Third” of the play’s title, and a young man who comes to represent everything she is against. When Third turns in a brilliantly written paper on King Lear that runs counter to her own take on Shakespeare’s tragedy, her default reaction is to accuse the student of plagiarism.

MAN

L CUMPSTY, third time’s a charm at TRTC “I’ve become invested in this very beautiful play,” says Cumpsty. “It’s about a powerful, intellectual, self determined woman with very firmly held opinions; who believes they are right and good, but who has not been able to see any other person’s point of view.” For the director, Wasserstein’s play—a comedy that’s “filled with dynamism, combativeness, wit, intelligence, and good humor”—has much to say at a time in which “we’re erecting barriers between us that are so black and white, so enormous, we’re losing the ability to see and hear and communicate with each other.”

PHOTO: Mike McLaughlin

PHOTO: Joan Marcus

Further serving to place Cumpsty’s choice into perspective is the fact that the spirit of King Lear—a play that the Shakespearean specialist has expressed an interest in tackling some day—inhabits every aspect of Third, from the professor’s own extreme views on the topic (“she dislikes what she sees as the ‘girlification’ of Cordelia”), to her relationship with her aging, Alzheimer’s-afflicted father Jack, and what the director sees as the “intriguing” fact that “the mother figures have disappeared from each of the two plays.” Also hovering over Third is the fact that its original New York run was overshadowed by Wasserstein’s sudden hospitalization and death from lymphoma, and indeed, the play features a supporting character who’s struggling with cancer—a fact that leads Cumpsty, who “met Wendy, but can’t say I knew her personally,” to suggest that “she may have known she was seriously sick while she was writing it…in an odd way, it’s not overly concerned with the politics. In effect, she’s saying for God’s sake, don’t be so blinded by your own thoughts that you fail to see the possibility of a connection with another person.” Starring as Laurie, in the Red Bank production is Annette O’Toole—an Emmy nominee with a formidable stack of credits in films (Cat People, Superman III, 48 Hours, Cross My Heart), television (Smallville, It), and—with husband Michael McKean—musical projects that include a Best Song Oscar nod for their work on A Mighty Wind. For Cumpsty, it marks a reunion with the actress who played Rose Kennedy in the TV miniseries The Kennedys of Massachusetts— a project in which he appeared as Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy’s husband. The supporting cast of the Two River production also includes Emily Walton, Amy Hohn, JR Horne and, as Third, Christopher Sears. “It’s not a dark, unhappy play…at the end there’s an extremely connected, life-affirming moment,” Cumpsty emphasizes. “(Wasserstein) inhabited such a progressive, intellectual environment…with this play she took a step back from the careerism and ambition; the things that we wear as badges and uniforms, and saw a broader vista.”

HEALTH & WELLNESS DURING PREGNANCY

Off To The Races Jessica Cini crosses the finish line (top), followed by Dr. Drew Jacoby (bottom).

by NOAH CARPENTER for Riverview Medical Center

J

essica Cini decided her final competitive race would be the Little Silver 5K on October 6, 2013. An exercise enthusiast with a competitive spirit, Jessica was more than ready to give her fellow contenders a run for their money, despite the fact she was three months pregnant. As she took her place on the starting line, Jessica couldn’t help but smile at a familiar face. Her Obstetrician, Dana Jacoby, M.D. was bibbed up and ready to run, just a few feet away. Jessica had been a patient of Dr. Jacoby’s for three years, and was well aware of his outlook on exercising while pregnant. “Through exercise,” says Dr. Jacoby, “pregnant women can regain control of vital aspects of their pregnancy by gaining less weight, minimizing the risk of diabetes or depression, and sometimes having faster labors!”

“I adamantly encourage my patients to exercise throughout their pregnancy.”

While Dr. Jacoby fully supports exercise to better handle the manageable facet of pregnancy, Jessica found solace in his advice on the not-so manageable features of carrying a child. “I’m a total Type-A Obstetrician Dana Jacoby, M.D. personality, I like to have control over my life.” Jessica states “Being powerless to something as intimate as my own body was difficult to accept at first, but with the help of Dr. Jacoby I was able to go with the flow, and even feel comfortable while doing so.” Despite her new Zen-like outlook, Jessica was far from helpless. As she crossed the finish line, she was pleased with her time of 21:12. Not only did Jessica finish 39th out of 531 runners, but more importantly, she beat Dr. Jacoby by a full 20 seconds. “I love telling Dr. Jacoby I wiped the floor with him!” Jessica says with a laugh. “We like to laugh about it, but it was his support and encouragement which motivated me to not only improve my health, but the health of my child as well.” For those of us who can’t run a 5 minute mile, Dr. Jacoby shares his advice on starting a fitness routine while pregnant. “If you are already exercising, continue moderate to vigorous exercise for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.” Says Dr. Jacoby “If you’re just starting out, begin slowly. Start with mild exercise like walking for 20-30 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week, until you feel comfortable increasing the intensity to a more moderate level.”

Hydro Sun Farms provides persons with disabilities a thorough foundation for future success.

W

hen Nicholas Harray—executive chef and owner of the 4-star gourmet Restaurant Nicholas in Red Bank—wants produce that can meet his high and exacting standards, he knows where to go. In fact, Hydro Sun Farms in Atlantic Highlands is now the only place he goes to supply his kitchens and his clientele with vegetables, herbs, and a myriad of hydroponic (grown in nutrient rich water, not soil) “living produce” that he deems “amazing!”

From a distance, the two retro-fitted greenhouses on the grounds of Windmill Acre Farms look deceptively conventional, but that impression changes instantly once in side. Opened in September 2013, in less than a year, the Hydro Sun Farms hot houses, under the direction of Bruce White, technical advisor, are bursting with produce and exciting possibilities—for plants and, most importantly, for persons with disabilities whose well-being is the primary mission of this 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization.

The Hydro Sun Tomato Plate, a house special at Drew’s Bayshore Bistro, Keyport. Chef/owner Andrew Araneo is happy to have Hydro Sun harvest on his menu. “Whatever they grow and can give us, we’ll find a use for.” , r

Hydro Sun Farms began as a work project idea in the Job Club at the New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) in Neptune, New Jersey. In addition to the goal to grow the best vegetables, fruits and herbs available for consumption, the greater purpose was to provide training and job opportunities for individuals with disabilities; a place where practical skills could be developed through on-thejob experience that would build the foundation for long-term employment. Today, trainees learn the process of hydroponic growing, retail, wholesale marketing, face-to-face interactions, and clerical skills, along with job search techniques. With DVR grant funding in place and two greenhouses up and running, Bruce is happy to report, “We’re filled to capacity with staff people we love.” It’s a win-win combination...and a lot of work. The greenhouses are going 24/7, every day, every season of the year with more than 4,000 plants and hundreds of varieties in each greenhouse. Lush tomatoes in the middle of winter? No problem.

Plants are grown in a temperature-controlled environment in nutrient rich water, free of weeds or soil-borne pests. No soil is necessary. Neither are herbicides and pesticides. The result is larger, more uniform produce with a higher-volume of production, as well as a kinder relationship to the planet and its occupants. Or, as Bruce says, “Don’t wash our produce, you might contaminate it.” A Fertigator System is the mechanical heart of the operation, pumping nutrients and balancing pH levels around the clock. Water is recycled, rather than allowed to flow into streams. No run off. No drainage. No waste. Machinery and vehicle emissions are eliminated because there is no need for plowing or digging. A tour of the greenhouses goes past hundreds of metal feeding beds piped into the feeding system and thousands of growing plants in every stage of development. Not only is Hyro Sun a functioning farm; it is a laboratory with experiments going on to test and see what hydroponic technology is capable of growing. Considered a more environmentally sound method of farming, it uses a fraction of the water required—an estimated 90% water reduction—to irrigate a conventional soil-based farm, and often yields higher results.

“Hyroponics surpasses dirt farming. This is the future of agriculture as it relates to a restaurant like ours.”

The ultimate plan is for Hydro Sun Farms produce to be Chef Nicholas Harary sold to local markets, restaurants, institutions, wholesalers (right) Restaurant and other organization as a “boutique grower.” The farm Nicholas does not sell to retail. As Bruce explains, “As a non-profit, our success is measured in greenhouses. It’s an economy of scale: more greenhouses equals room to grow more produce that supports more trainees. We are a training center producing a very fine product and are looking for partners who are looking for the quality we provide.” A retired entrepreneur and executive, Bruce came to farming a few years ago through his friendship with the owners of Windmill Acres Farm, when he was looking for a way to decompress from an international career in software development. The Hydro Sun Farm concept was in the works, but not yet successfully off the ground. When Bruce took on the job of retrofitting the greenhouses for hydroponics, he was hooked. “I have an on-off switch, and nothing in the middle,” he explains. “I’m used to taking something and growing it, but this takes me to a whole new level I normally don’t get to.“ Turned on to hydroponics, he’s up at 5 in the morning to start the day like a true farmer.

SARAH HILTON

THE WILD ANIMALS OF LOCKHART FARM, 6’ X 9’ floor canvas by Sarah Hilton.

An Artist’s Life– Cheerful and Useful by OLIVIA IANNONE

S

arah Hilton Studio on East Avenue in Atlantic Highlands is a block or so off the main thoroughfare. It’s not conspicuous, but it is peaceful, and its owner and namesake likes it that way. Artist Sarah Hilton has found that people hungry for creativity—even if they don’t know it— somehow find their way to her colorful studio unbidden. Like so many of her patrons, Sarah found her own way to art serendipitously.

Years ago, a job in San Francisco in Macy’s display department served as an artistic “boot camp,” teaching her how to both explore creativity and repurpose a variety of projects at a quick pace. Recognizing that she had found something she loved, Sarah moved back to Monmouth County, where she had grown up in Rumson, and enrolled at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. After earning a BFA in graphic design at SVA, she went on to graduate from New York University with a Masters Degree in American Folk Art in conjunction with the American Folk Art Museum where she subsequently taught art classes. The first Sarah Hilton Studio opened in Sea Bright in 1990. In her classes, she took techniques and materials from American Folk Art—vinegar painting, canvas floor clothes, assemblages—and modernized them with the use of art supplies and methods not available to the itinerant painters who established the tradition in the early days of the country. These original artists were grounded in utilitarian purpose more than decorative art. One of Sarah’s specialties is coming up with her own techniques to produce modern versions of folk art in simple necessities that provide an opportunity for self-expression. “You could keep your things in a plain box,” she points out. “But people make furniture.” As Sarah explains, “Objects were cheerful and useful and I still subscribe to that in making art with my students.”

One of Sarah’s classes hosts a unique group of students: young adults with autism who visit weekly from Impact OASIS (Ongoing Autistic Success in Society, impactoasis.com), a supervised home and special community in Middletown. For Sarah, each class is a meaningful exchange: she gives her charges artistic instruction; they give her a glimpse of a refreshingly different perspective. No idle chitchat here. “They come into the studio and immediately hone in on their art,” says Sarah. “Their focus is incredible and the results are astounding. It’s like a window to a parallel world. I learn so much every week.”

Judith passed away in 2011. It was a time that would hold lots of change for Sarah: shortly afterward, her Little Silver studio was severely damaged in a fire. The very next day, she found the property that would become her Atlantic Highlands studio. Cozy and airy, the space abounds with art. Creativity covers the walls, as do dozens of prints and clippings for inspiration. Classes begin. Students gather. And, inspired by the folk art that she loves, Sarah Hilton goes about her day, cheerful and useful, making art happen.

Sarah’s involvement with different-needs artists (she prefers this term to “special needs”) began decades ago with her sister, Judith, who had Down syndrome. Sarah was doing a project for her Masters Degree on “outsider art”—a term for work done by untrained art-makers who create outside the art mainstream, and are often different-needs individuals. Sarah invited Judith and her group of friends to come paint. “They didn’t want to leave,” she remembers, smiling. “So they were there for about twenty years.”

On March 2, Impact OASIS teamed up with Sarah and other community members to host the students’ first-ever art show at the Beauregard Fine Art gallery in Rumson. “It was a group effort and it was flawless,” Sarah says, noting the contributions of gallery space by Kathleen Donnelly and photography by Avery Brighton of Shine Bright Photography. The show was a huge success: every picture sold and the artists enjoyed their spot in the limelight, leaving some of parents with tears in their eyes.

Photography by Avery Brighton of Shine Bright Studios

After relocating to Little Silver for a few years, Sarah moved her studio in January 2014 to its current bright and cozy Atlantic Highlands home that she considers a “perfect space.” While she frequently works on commissioned projects—including custom floor cloths, faux finishing, and full-scale murals—for interior decorators and private clients, her greatest joy is found in her classes. There is no pre-requisite for signing up and students come from all walks of life, with and without art backgrounds. What they receive is guidance that leads to discovery. “They always find out that they can do more than they thought they could,” she says.

Wait a Minute! The 6th Annual Atlantic Highlands FilmOneFest

T

he Atlantic Highlands 6th Annual One-Minute International Film Festival—aka the appropriately abbreviated FilmOneFest—is a celebration of the super-short film and a snapshot of the creative image-making happening online and across the world. Live-action and animated films (under 2 minutes in length) from local and international film and video makers are projected on a giant outdoor screen under the stars on the historic shores of Sandy Hook Bay in Atlantic Highlands Marina (rain date July 20th, in case of rain and/or high wind on July 20th, the festival will move to the Charles Hess Parish Center, South Avenue, Atlantic Highlands). Last year’s 2013 Festival screened some 60 short-short films from dozens of countries (including the UK, France, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia and, for the first time, Moldavia).

FilmOneFest 2014 Saturday July 19 7-10:30 pm Atlantic Highland Marina | 1 Simon Lake Drive

SmartMovieMaking.com called it the "best little film festival in the world." For the thousands who come—and attendees, as well as entrants, are growing every year since the festivals founding in 2008—it’s a night to remember. This free town-wide celebration of the short short film has become an exciting exhibition of the art of filmmaking and a must-see event at the shore. Festival co-creator and curator, Robert O’Connor, calls it “a whole community experience—one that’s about the community of filmmakers as well as the community of our neighbors.” The seasonal celebration of succinct cinema (presented by the all-volunteer nonprofit Atlantic Highlands Arts Council) is a mix of the local and the international—with elements of the most sophisticated big-city arthouse offering, and the most festive fairground of a small-town summertime.

Admission to FilmOneFest is free of charge and seating is “bring your own” (although there’s a preferred-seating VIP option available for a donation).

ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS

GEDNEY WEBB MUSIC EDITOR Gedney Webb is one of the judges in the homegrown Atlantic Highlands FilmOneFest, but his job for over twenty years has been as a music editor working on big screen films with some of Hollywood’s greatest directors including Ron Howard, Robert DeNiro and Ang Lee. He received a Golden Reel for his work on the the Academy Award winning film, “Chicago.” His current project is the film "The Hundred Foot Journey," directed by Lasse Hallstrom (Cider House Rules, Chocolat, The Shipping News) which opens August 8th. He grew up in Rumson and, a few years ago, decided he didn’t have to miss home anymore to do his work and moved back east from LA. In 2007, he and his wife, Nikki bought a house in Atlantic Highlands. She coaches soccer in town. Their son, Nolan, starts kindergarten in AH Elementary next year. For Gedney, life is good here, like when the music score matches up to the movie action and everything’s in sync.

All About Animals IN BALANCE Integrative Veterinary Medicine/ IVM by ALEXIA TSAKIRIS, BVet MD IVM focuses on all aspects of the animal and not just the physical manifestations of an underlying disease. In addition to how the body is working, IVM looks at lifestyle and diet, exercise, mental and emotional well-being, and supporting immune and organ systems of an animal. The use of antibiotics, surgery and other conventional modalities are still utilized when necessary; the point of IVM is to treat the whole animal and not just the disease. If balance can be maintained through proper nutrition, adequate exercise and energy balancing in the body, perhaps ultimately less drastic and invasive procedures will be necessary. As graduates of accredited veterinary schools, holistic vets receive comprehensive training in science and modern therapies, then complement that expertise with modalities which may include acupuncture, herbal medicine (Western, Ayurvedic, and Chinese), nutritional therapy, chiropractic, physical therapy, homeopathy, Bach flower essences, massage, and Reiki. When imbalances are corrected, the animal is in a better position to heal. A variety of treatment options are available: from the healthy puppy you want to keep that way with proper exercise, the right food for the breed, and customized herbs for its temperament, to the elderly cat whose mobility can be helped with a series of acupuncture treatments, Integrative Veterinary Medicine strives towards balance.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Mohandas Gandhi

Your Astrological

GARDEN

by ALICE LOFFREDO

Spring became official on March 20 when the Sun entered the sign of Aries. One of the season’s great graces is the return of the botanical world from its winter slumbers, which led me to think about how astrology and gardening can join together to make a recognizable, positive contribution to our lives. Each of the signs of the zodiac is associated with certain plants, flowers and colors. Including these in your environment stimulates the energies of your Sun sign in the most positive way, helping you feel comfortable and at home in your world.

You don’t have to get out a shovel and start digging (unless you’re an earthy sign like Taurus, or Virgo, that is— they often love to “play in the dirt.”) Planting a container garden on a sunny ledge, or picking just the right flowers for a kitchen table bouquet, or even hanging a carefully-selected botanical print on the wall can have the same effect.

“We must make our garden grow.” - Voltaire

56

If you know the sign of your Moon (emotions) or Venus (aesthetics and our response to beauty), so much the better. The energetic landscape and palette expand and connect you only deeper to your “center.” But knowing only your Sun sign is an awesome start. The Sun represents the basic nature of our personality, and Mother Nature can certainly work wonders with that. Happy Spring!
