Ava is a dog. Part Chihuahua, part who-knows-what, she was rescued from a puppy mill in South Carolina by an organization called Mutts-N-More, which, presently, consists of a network of foster homes throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Some five years ago, Maureen, a friend of Mary’s who volunteers for the non-profit, called to say she had this little dog that would be “great for you and Danny.” Mary told Danny. Danny said, “No way we’re getting a dog.” Ava had spent the first ten months of her life in a small cage about two feet by two feet, surrounded by other dogs, some dead or starving, Danny explains. “A real crazy situation she was in.” Mary said to Danny, “It’s just a little dog.” Danny said, “Definitely not.” Mary put on her coat. “I’m going to go look at it.” So Danny went with her, mainly to make sure she didn’t come home with a dog. “So we’re there with Ava’s foster parent,” Danny recalls. “The dog’s ears are back, her ribs are showing, scales on top of her head, a very scared-looking little thing.” Well, that did it. He was sold. “And we’ve been inseparable since,” he says. Ava has watched Danny’s softball games from her VIP seat inside Danny’s equipment bag, and can often be found lounging about the photography studio on Bridge Avenue. “I’ve taken tons of pictures of Ava. She’s very photogenic and could probably be a model if she wanted to be,” he allows. Danny tried bringing Ava along for a ride on his Harley-Davidson Sportster, but logistics didn’t seem safe and the big 1,300 cc engine was scary music to a Chihuahua ear. If Ava can’t come, Danny often won’t go—he hasn’t ridden the bike in five years. When they’re apart, Danny often thinks of her. Mary feels the same way, and has been equally guilty of spoiling Ava silly from day one. “I don’t know where I’d be right now without her, let’s put it that way,” Danny admits. “Supposedly we rescued her, but, as Mary puts it, she rescued us.”

Many people know Danny Sanchez as a preeminent photographer who, in 1986, left a 20-year New York career (US magazine, Spin, Star) for a studio in Red Bank, whose portraits—sometimes startling, always insightful—grace home and office walls throughout the area. Others know him through the shared enjoyment of various pursuits that, for Danny, include softball, boxing, slot car racing, and motorcycles. Then there’s Ava. She knows him as the guy who, along with Danny’s wife Mary, is responsible for, probably, saving her life.

Megan Prenderville is at the counter of Frame to Please in The Galleria Red Bank, which she runs with her husband Mike Harper, when a customer enters the shop. The first thing the customer says has nothing to do with picture framing, rather, she wants to know about Chopper. “Hey, I just saw your post on Facebook that Chop wasn’t feeling good, how’s he doing today?” Chopper has cancer, and gets around fine considering a prognosis more than two years back that gave him four to six weeks to live. And today he’s good. Chopper has a following and so does “brother” Yoshi, both Galleria regulars who know and are known by retailers and customers alike. “They aren’t our dogs anymore, they belong to the community, which has totally embraced them,” Megan says. “We actually have a few people who have cancer that come and regularly visit Chopper.” Chopper and Yoshi are rescue dogs, the former a Border collie terrier mix, the latter a blend of shiba inu and husky. As for Megan, she’s a Middletown native and lifelong picture framer; Mike is a former illustrator turned picture framer. They stopped working separate jobs, launched a framing business out of the basement of their home in Red Bank, outgrew the space in the middle of the recent recession, and moved to the Galleria. Megan and Mike did have a dog, a keeshond named Keesley who died before “The Boys” came along (Yoshi fast on Chopper’s heels). Mike, for one, hadn’t planned on getting another dog, let alone two. Oh well. Chopper’s path to Megan was especially circuitous, with the puppy landing on her lap for safekeeping during a snowstorm. As Megan says, the snow went away, Chopper didn’t. He’s pushing twelve now. And Mike—“All the things I do wouldn’t be possible without my man!” Megan allows—couldn’t be happier. Chopper’s fight against cancer led her to become involved with Shrewsbury-based Save U.S. Pets Foundation, which grants money to people who can’t afford emergency health care for their pets. The non-profit—“Volunteers are needed!” Megan implores—works with 11 participating New Jersey veterinary hospitals, including Red Bank Veterinary Hospital (whose employees, in 2003, started the foundation that in 2007 became a separate entity under its present name). Megan expanded her animal-oriented efforts, taking over three empty kiosks in the hallway outside her frame shop, converting one to Paws for a Cause! in order to sell pet products made by local residents. Today Megan sits on the Save U.S. Pets board and “The Boys” serve as ambassadors and sit in on meetings. They’re quite opinionated, but very well behaved.

Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts is the insightful creation of Dick Palazzo who, armed with a pre-veterinary degree and a love of animals, set about, in 1969, to change the pet care business model in a way that, 40 years later, remains unique to this area, if not much of the world. “He had a vision that revolutionized the kennel industry, and was the first to provide pets with a fully controlled environment in an enclosed facility,” says Dick’s daughter Betsy Palazzo-Dudick, who, along with her sister Koren Palazzo-Spadavecchia and their mother, Dick’s wife Mary, run the family-owned business, taking it from one inspired level to the next. “Think of it,” says Betsy, “as The Atlantic Club and Molly Pitcher Inn for your pet.” Here, cats are top dog, with their own tranquil digs and specially built glassed-in funhouse replete with climbing walls, and so are animal rescue groups. The latter receive educational resources from the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals, established by the daughters as a present to their parents in honor of their 40th year in business. As Dick explains, his vision for Purr’n Pooch stemmed from “looking at things from a dog or cat’s point of view.” The end result is a place that says no to boredom and yes to self-expression and fun.

It’s summer. Do you know what your kids are reading?
ummer time, and the living should be easy, but these days, warm weather brings with it reading lists from school that can put pressure on both parents and kids. But take heart. The “book circuit” along River Road makes life easy for everyone when it comes to acquiring required books, getting children to read them, and engaging in book-oriented summer activities. The stops to make on readers’ row are River Road Books (759 River Road, Fair Haven); the Fair Haven Public Library (748 River Road); and the Red Bank Public Library (84 West Front Street). Each bookish venue has the summer reading lists sent out to them by local schools, and each location has something special to offer growing readers.

Owned by Laurie Potter and Karen Rumage, River Road Books is one of the only independent bookstores in Monmouth County. Its bright, airy space provides ample space for browsing at any age. “Oedipus Prep Class”— taught by Kara Keale from Teach for America—is a four-week session at River Road Books that is open to in-coming high school freshman taking English Honors to help students prepare them for the fall semester. “The program is designed to give a leg up with a book, like Oedipus, that is a more of a challenge,” explains Laurie Potter. For children ages six to eight, the store has book clubs that are organized by parents, but customized by Laurie and Karen who suggest books the children might like to read. Scheduled around beach time, the clubs usually meet either in morning or late afternoon. Across the street at the Fair Haven Public Library, “Fizz, Boom, Read” is a current reading program with the focus on science and technology. Created by the Collaborative Summer Library Program and used by many libraries each year, “Fizz, Boom, Read” was launched in Fair Haven in early June as part of the “Vacation Reading Club.” According to Library Director Donna Powers, by June 2 over 152 children were enrolled. “They have read for 20,000 minutes,” she added. The books are offered online and reading hours are combined with in-person activities such as weekly drawings and prizes that include gift cards for River Road Books and Crazees Ice Cream Parlor in Rumson. At the Red Bank Eisner Memorial/Public Library in Red Bank, “Fizz, Boom, Read” is being held in the Children’s Room—a large space set apart from the adult floor—where science and technology books are prominently displayed. Because the library sits on a grassy knoll overlooking the Navesink River, some activities can be held outdoors. “We are fortunate here to have a separate Children’s Room,” explains Sira Williams, the energetic coordinator. “Children don’t have to whisper here. They can play, read and talk to each other.” This is “Miss Sira’s” third year running the “Fizz, Boom, Read” program, and she has added many embellishments along the way. The core lies in reading books. Children (ages 3 to 12) are invited to sign up to be “Reading Robots” and, for every ten books read, they can win prizes in a weekly raffle. An “Ice Cream Social,” a “Super Duper Science Blow Out” and a “Summer Reading Finale” are big group events on the program calendar. In addition, there are science-themed videos (for ages 3 to 5) and movies (for ages 5 to 12). All events are free, but some may require pre-registration. As for those books on the required list, you can get them on the book circuit—off the shelves or by quick order…and a lot of summer reading fun to go with them. he summer is a special time of year for all of us living along the Jersey Shore. For children, the sunny season represents so much more: freedom! Not only are they free from homework, classrooms and bus rides; they are free to play outside longer in the sun. While they enjoy this time, it’s important to make sure your children stay hydrated in order to avoid illness due to dehydration. Stephanie Reynolds, D.O., Medical Director of Riverview Medical Center’s Emergency Department shares her expertise on keeping kids safe while having fun in the sun. “Water accounts for 60 percent of body weight,” says Dr. Reynolds. “It also plays a critical role in just about every bodily process.” Nearly everything you do during the day—talking, walking, and even eating—requires energy that, in turn, generates heat, which escapes the body through perspiration. Simply put, perspiration is how your body stays cool. Under normal conditions, we all lose water through perspiration, and other bodily functions. In a healthy person, this water is replaced by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. “When your children are playing outside for long periods of time and not drinking enough water, dehydration occurs.” Dr. Reynolds says. Symptoms to look out for with dehydration include thirst, irritability, fatigue, dry mouth, and dizziness.
Water melon is 90% water and can help keep your kids hydrated. Stephanie Reynolds, D.O., Medical Director Riverview Medical Center Emergency Department “In cases of mild dehydration, I recommend my patients simply rehydrate by drinking fluids.” says Dr. Reynolds. “If you have trouble getting your kids to drink water, try mixing things up a little with lemonade or flavored water. Even better, watermelon is 90% water and can help keep your kids hydrated.” Dehydration should be treated as soon as possible to avoid further injury or complications. If your child is exhibiting any symptoms of dehydration and symptoms do not improve after drinking fluids, it may be time to consult a medical expert. The Pediatric Care Center at Riverview, part of Meridian Pediatric Network, is staffed by in-house pediatricians, board certified emergency medicine physicians, and magnet-recognized pediatric nurses so parents can have peace of mind knowing their children are in the most capable hands.

It was once an iron-clad truism of Show Business: the rule that says audiences will NEVER pay money to see someone who gets beamed into their living room, for free, on TV. Somewhere along the line—perhaps right around the time the neighbor’s kid asked you, “What’s a TV?”—the old rules got flipped on their rabbit-ears. Fast-changing ways of producing, delivering and consuming content have “big-banged” a whole new galaxy of unlikely stars—and at places like the

Count Basie Theatre, the real reality is that these newly minted celebs are among the most reliable tickets on the live entertainment circuit. The roster of acts that have filled the Basie’s seats in recent seasons can read like a channel-guide of top rated favorites, as slick touring tie-ins to dance and talent competitions share schedules with bare-bones Q&A presentations by America’s best-loved Ghost Hunters, Dog Whisperers, Cake Bosses and Long Island Mediums. It’s a new breed of headline attraction, about which Izzy Sackowitz says, “Fans of these shows have a very personal relationship with these stars…many of them come from very ordinary, humble beginnings to which the average viewer can relate.” “Stars like Cesar Millan just connect with people…who doesn’t have a dog at home that misbehaves?” says the Basie’s Vice President of Operations about the host of Nat Geo’s Leader of the Pack, who returns to Red Bank this October. “His shows have sold out for a few years running now and he manages to keep the act fresh. He even adopted a dog himself last time he was in town.” As Sackowitz explains, “We saw this trend beginning to develop around 2008-2009,” and while for some “making the switch from unscripted TV

Before all that, however, the area in and around the Count Basie will be alive and abuzz with a schedule of Wine and Dine events that commence at noon on August 2. The star power carries over into Saturday night, August 2, with an appearance by Emmy-winning Food Network host and best-selling cookbook creator Giada Di Laurentiis. he Jazz Arts Project and its artistic director Joe (“Mooche”) Muccioli are among the staunchest standard bearers of the musical art form that helped put Red Bank on the map and “The Kid from Red Bank”, William “Count” Basie, in the history books. Since the summer of 2006, the Red Bank non-profit Jazz Arts Project has been presenting straight ahead swinging classic jazz throughout the Greater South/Central NJ region and the Summer Jazz Café in the Marion Huber Theater in the Two River Theater in Red Bank is the highlight of the season. The atmosphere is intimate with the audience seated at cozy candle-lit tables listening to luminaries of the jazz world light up the night. Coffee, tea and treats are on the menu but the four-star musical fare in the reason to come early and grab a table. In past years, the jazz line-up has included Bucky Pizzarelli, The Les Paul Trio, and the Mingus Dynasty among many other. She’s worked with Bob Hope and George Burns, and as a guest with Les Brown and his Band of Renown. According to Bob Hope, “There’s one word for this gal—wonderful.” Pianist and cofounder John Colianni has been a force on the music scene working with Lionel
Hampton, Mel Torme (six albums as personal accompanist), and Les Paul as a member of the Les Paul Quartet. In the words of Mel Torme, “He’s the best you’ll ever hear.”

He is a professor of Saxophone Studies at Bard College and
principle jazz instructor for Jazz Arts Academy at the Count Basie Theatre. Radam Schwartz, Hammond B3 organist and jazz pianist, has built his reputation over the last 30 years playing with such great musicians as Arthur and Red Prysock, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Al Hibler, and Jimmy Ford. He continues to make music history today playing with renowned artists Cecil Brooks III, Russell Malone, and David Fathead Newman among many others. His recording, Organized (Muse Records 1995), was mentioned in the B3 Bible as one of the essential organ records of all time. He was music director at the Jazz Institute of New Jersey, artist-in-residence at Middlesex County Arts program, and is currently one of the instructors at the JAZZ ARTS ACADEMY. tlantic Highlands with its Victorian vibe, overlooking lower New York Bay and full of quaint shops and outstanding eateries, is home to the East Coast’s largest municipal harbor. It’s not only a stroller’s delight, but a springboard for myriad nautical pursuits. Included are the motorized kind where you can wet your line (and your whistle), take in the sights, or do a little of both.
“Give a man a fish and he has food for a day,” wrote author Zenna Schaffer. “Teach him how to fish and you can get rid of him for the entire weekend.” Or at least part of it. Captain Kevin Bradshaw runs his 60’ party/fishing boat Dorothy B. from a slip near the Seastreak ferry dock. A half day trip for an adult costs $42 (seniors and children less). Rod rentals are available, as are private charters. There’s a nicely stocked snack bar. Parking and bait are free, and so are the memories. “We mostly fish within 15 miles of Atlantic Highlands—in the summer six to eight miles out,” Kevin notes. Fluke are hot at the moment. There’s striped bass in the spring and fall (when three-quarter-day excursions are offered), along with sea bass, blackfish, and sometimes ling. Customers come from “all over.” Pennsylvania, Delaware, and recently a group from New York that had fished with Kevin 20 years ago. “A lot of people find out I’m down here,” he explains matter-of-factly.

Down here is down from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, where Kevin grew up. In fact, were Kevin to number the boats that have served the family business there, Dorothy B. would be ninth in a lineage that dates back to the Depression. “My grandfather was a painter. Doctors told him to get some fresh air because the lead paint was killing him,” says Kevin. “My grandmother said, ‘Let’s get a boat, go out on Sheepshead Bay, fishing and stuff.‘ They brought along neighbors, and my grandmother says, ‘Oh, this could be a good business.’” Kevin is third-generation proof. His retirement in 2007, after 33 years at various helms, was short lived. (“My daughter asked me, ‘Dad, what’s your exit plan?’ And I said, ‘Huh?’ ”). He was familiar with Atlantic Highlands, and, for several years, operated other owners’ boats. He subsequently followed his two daughters, who moved to the area, and bought a house in Tinton Falls. A slip opened up at the harbor, he bought a new boat. “So here I am, back in business,” he says. “It’s a nice place to be.” Then there’s Captain Dan Schade who, despite suffering from MBD, spends long hours running his business, Classic Boat Rides, which he launched in 2004. For landlubbers, MBD stands for Multiple Boat Disorder, an affliction that has left Dan with three to operate and maintain (one is a restored

The others include the Mariner, a classic 54' Chesapeake Bay powerboat built in Virginia in 1978 that can hold 40 passengers; and, currently under renovation, a 24’ six-passenger Hubert Johnson Black Jack, named Mum Runner II and originally built in Point Pleasant, to replace a former water taxi. What makes them unique—and therefore Dan’s business—is that they all are wooden. “We always say ‘wood boats ride best,’” explains Dan, who lives in Leonardo. “There’s a warmth and charm about them—making for a more romantic, nostalgic customer experience—and they provide a nicer, gentler ride. There aren’t many around.” Though fishing is an option, Classic Boat Rides is all about pleasure cruising on the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers and Sandy Hook Bay (charters for up to 40 passengers start at $1,200 for two hours). Summer Friday night sunset tours are $29/per, plus a small fee. Mariner guests can enjoy sightseeing, cocktail cruises (cash bar on board), eco-tours, picnics or customized catered dinner jaunts; special events are accommodated, and dock & dine is available, too. There’s a three-hour Mansion Tour up the Navesink to scope out the homes of the stars. Starting in September, there will be open-boat Saturday afternoon cruises. The Mariner is also available for trips to the Statue of Liberty, and to various lighthouses that cannot be accessed by land. Dan, whose love of boating began when he was four, is a former production director at “The Rat,” a Point Pleasant-based radio station. Dan secured his captain’s license, and started business with an 18’ Chris-Craft out of Sea Bright. He left radio about two years ago, cashed in his 401(k), and bought the Mariner. His wife Vicky, a fulltime job in the city notwithstanding, helps out on board. The best part of the job? “The contagious joy of the passengers,” he says. When disembarking from a trip with either Captain Kevin or Captain Dan, passengers can take advantage of a harbour venue that itself is a summer destination for special events—check out “Harbor Happenings” on the town’s website www.ahnj.com/ahnj/Harbor/. MAJOR NEWS Jerry Vasto Colorado Rockies Draft Choice For Chief Vasto, Atlantic Highlands Chief of Police, “the boys of summer” is a phrase that takes on a whole new meaning since his son, Jerry, “made the draft.” This spring, the Colorado Rockies selected the 6-foot-2/200 pound left-handed pitcher in the 24th round with the 713th overall selection. “It’s every boy’s dream and he’s sure living mine,” says Jerry’s dad. “He’s put a lot of time and effort into playing the game and our family is very proud of him.” The Vasto family goes back four generations in Atlantic Highlands where Jerry lives with his dad, his mother Debbie, twin brother Nick, and sister Angela. The Henry Hudson 2010 graduate’s road to the majors is paved with years of winning seasons and awards, pitching for the HH Admirals and then the Golden Falcons at Felician College where he helped lead the team to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship and was voted the CACC Pitcher of the Year.
“I’m just glad a team thought enough of me to give me a chance. I’m excited to have a chance to pitch for the Rockies organization.”
With a 94 mph pitch, it looks like one of Atlantic Highland’s favorite sons is on a fastball to a pro-career.

he water-fronted houses on Locust Point Road are some of the loveliest homes in the county, if not the whole country, but Stephen Ferber never thought he would own one when he first saw—and loved—the stately Mansard-roofed Federal Colonial at number 459. The man who was to become the editor and publisher of national outdoor magazines was a young writer when he first saw the house while he was out bicycling in the area with friends. “I was crossing the Iron Bridge when I saw it,” he Circa: the New recalls. “I was enthralled. It seems like a thousand years ago, but I still remember the Amersterdam feeling. Years later, I bought the place.” He’s been the owner for thirty-five years. Hotel era

The house sits on almost 300 feet of frontage on Claypit Creek, a tidal estuary off the Navesink River, four-tenths of a mile from the Oceanic Bridge. It has unobstructed views of the creek, the river, and Hartshorne Woods, a state park with acres of protected land. Built in 1857, the private residence became the New Amsterdam hotel in the early 1900’s where composer Sergei Rachmaninoff was reported to be among the guests who passed summers there.

All About Animals HELP PETS COPE WITH THUNDER & FIREWORKS by KAREN FAZIO
Summer is in full swing and pets are enjoying travel, outdoor activities and longer days with their families. However, warmer months present some not-sofun events, too—namely thunderstorms and fireworks. For some pets, these experiences can be terrifying. Seeing a pet in such distress can be upsetting to owners because it doesn’t seem there is much that can be done to help. Here are some suggestions for making noisy events less frightening: Prior to a planned fireworks display, find an out-of-town lodging facility or relative’s house where the animal can stay during the event. For unpredictable events, such as thunderstorms, pets likely will want company. Sometimes, just being in the same room with them can help reduce stress levels. Many pets find comfort through petting and soothing tones of voice. Others may wish to hide. Allow the animal to choose a coping strategy that helps them most. For example, my foxhound chooses to hide for a few minutes, emerge for soothing and petting, then hides again. The most important factor is that you are present to lend comfort when needed. Never force animals to face their fears. Doing so will exacerbate their issues. If an out-of-town reprieve is impossible, try to provide your pets with a room void of windows, or pull down all blinds and drapes to block out flashes of lightning. Also, play music or increase the volume on the television to help drown out some of the louder sounds. You can create a den by draping a thick comforter over chairs and sit with them inside. The comforter’s thickness helps reduce sound intensity. Compression vests, such as a ThunderShirt, can help dogs relax and are available in most pet stores. If a pet is inconsolable, vomits, paces or shakes uncontrollably, speak with a veterinarian to discuss the possibility of a short-acting sedative to help your pet relax.

Now Is Your Time to Shine a Little Brighter
always like to know what Jupiter is doing, because we can identify where and how to get in touch with that planet’s optimism, confidence, and zest for life, even when things could be going better than they are. These upbeat qualities are getting doubled up over the next thirteen months (July 2014 to August 2015) when the largest planet in our solar system takes up residence in the fiery, confident, romantic and creative sign of Leo, the sign of the king of the beasts (and of royalty of the human variety as well.)
When energy is nurtured and stimulated, it grows stronger, and it diminishes when it is ignored. One great way to stimulate Jupiter in Leo energy is to “act as if” you already feel that good. Leo is the sign of the actor—someone who assumes the character of another person and is confident and comfortable taking center stage. Let’s say you’ve wanted to enter the cyberworld of on-line dating, but were hesitant to give it a try. Jupiter in Leo is the just the right time to work on your bio and lead with your strongest suits: not only are your odds of getting lucky (Jupiter) romantically (Leo) at a high, but you’ll be amazed at how much you like the person you’re describing. Did you cancel that long-overdue cruise when all those ships went toxic this winter? Now’s the time to get back on board. Jupiter loves travel, and Leo wants to go first class, which is what cruise ships are all about, even if you’re not in the penthouse suite. Both Jupiter and Leo love “living large,” but you can get in touch with their energies much more modestly. Play with some kids. They don’t have to be your own. Jupiter loves good times, and Leo is playful, like your own inner child. Or do something that’s defines fun for you. If you know where Leo colors the landscape of your birth chart, you can identify more specifically the kinds of activities and experiences that can give the energies an extra boost, because that’s where Jupiter is travelling this year. Energy itself is neutral. How it is used is what makes it either positive or negative. The dark side of both Jupiter and Leo is excess: generosity and expansiveness that become extravagance and waste; optimism going cockeyed; confidence leading to reckless risk-taking or self-involved egotism. So be careful. If we don’t go overboard, the time that Jupiter travels through Leo can help us all get out of the doldrums and shine a little brighter. And can’t we all use a little of that?
