MARY LOUISE VAN DER WILDEN LE PAPILLON

Each morning when Mary Louise van der Wilden opens Le Papillon, her boutique in Rumson that features accessories and separates, the first one through the door is JJ, who tears about making sure no one is hiding under the counter or behind a clothing rack. Then he settles in, waiting for the first customer to arrive. It’s a routine, one of many that endears the scrappy six-pounder to its owner, along with his companionship and store smarts.

“The door opens, and he runs up to greet the customer,” Mary Louise explains. “The regulars know him. I think some people come to see him instead of the merchandise.” JJ’s modest about his importance, despite being a breed favored by the 18th Century queen of France, Marie Antoinette. As for the breed, JJ is a Papillon. Seriously. Mary Louise, an inveterate dog lover who once worked as a cosmetic and accessories buyer for Bendel’s and Bergdorf Goodman before launching her store in 1971 (she moved to her present location on River Road in 1997, integrating her deceased husband’s shop, The Brass Horn, in 2002), has owned many dogs over the years. Everything from Great Danes and Chows to Boxers and spaniels. Of them all, JJ is the most “portable,” Mary Louise allows, noting that his predecessor, Frazer, was also a Papillon, and a show dog. When Frazer died of old age, about a decade ago, Mary Louise vowed never to have another dog. “That lasted two months, I think,” she says. “I’d come home at night, and there’d be nobody there to greet me, and I thought, well, hmmm, I don’t know.” It wasn’t long before she was checking out the adoption offerings on Petfinders.com. One day JJ’s picture popped up. “He was just too cute to resist.” The dog’s foster mom called him Clark, though his name was Jay. “I went to school with a Clark who was sort of chubby and nasty, and I thought, no, this does not look like Clark to me.” So Mary Louise reverted to a variation of the Papillon’s original name. She has a strong bond with JJ, and is often amazed by his actions. For example, if Mary Louise is still at home (she has lived in Fair Haven since 1985) at around quarter to ten in the morning, “JJ will come up to me as if to say, come on, it’s time to go!” Her store in Rumson opens at ten. He’s not a bad guard dog either. His bark is huge. “It would be hard to judge his size if you didn’t see him,” she says, tucking JJ under her arm.

KAREN LEIPZIG LIZ, EMILY & JASON LEIPZIG Years ago, when Karen Leipzig was still a special education teacher in the Middletown Township school system, she left one of her beloved dogs at a local kennel while she and her husband went on vacation. When she picked him up, the dog’s tail was between his legs. “I felt so guilty,” she recalls. Something wasn’t quite right. She noted also that the kennel had limited daycare. It all got her thinking. Flash-forward to 2002. Karen left her 20-year job, and the children she once taught were replaced by a different sort, with the same boundless energy and inquisitive natures.

DOGS ON THE FARM

“I always loved kids, and that’s why I got into teaching. Now the dogs on the farm are my kids. They’re my new students,” she says. The farm in question is a five and one-half acre country estate and horse farm in the Chapel Hill section of Middletown, where Karen lives. The dogs (and cats, too) are guests at the business Karen launched there, called Dogs on the Farm. Today, the operation is a sophisticated, high-tech (including live webcams) family-run “play and stay resort” offering an array of services backed by well-trained staff. It can board upwards of 80 dogs, with an additional 50 in daycare, and provides a special facility for the felines—not to mention perks that include huge play yards and a custom swim park. When Karen started the business, she knew that her “kennel” was going to be different. Karen, a horse lover, and her husband bought the farm around 1992, and subsequently opened a summer horse camp. The business took off, and she built an indoor riding ring. Her son Jason, then about 13 and who, today, is Karen’s business partner, worked alongside her. They decided to phase out the camp, and upon the suggestion of friends, converted the indoor riding space into canine lodgings. “That started the whole thing,” Karen says, noting she was motivated by her love of animals and desire to stay at home. Jason —whose wife, Liz, is the company office manager—and Karen’s other son, Arthur, went away to college, and later returned and soon joined the family-business. “We took a chance,” explains Karen. “I knew nothing about business. But at the time I said, I’m going to do it. We’re going to be fine.” She went to doggie daycare workshops, learned the ropes, and decided to offer the benefits of daycare to boarders. It worked. Karen couldn’t be happier, doing what she loves, alongside her family. “It’s a wonderful business because it also makes people happy,” she says “Customers know their pets are being well taken care of.”

SET ‘EM S UP, JOE…

ummertime, and the l i v i n ’ i s e a s y, ” t h e Gershwins declared in their monumental “Porgy and Bess;” a 1959 album by Miles Davis and Gil Evans which inspired a young-man-witha-horn hopeful named Joe Muccioli to make JAZZ his life’s passion and profession.

by

TOM CHESEK

While that 1959 album “drew me in and never let go…like discovering the Rosetta Stone,” the irony of the situation is that life in this season when “the fish Joe Muccioli are jumpin’, and the cotton is high” is anything but easy for the man nicknamed Mooche…at least not since the internationally acclaimed big-band conductor, arranger and jazz scholar became a resident of Red Bank, the Basie-birthplace borough where he promptly set about co-founding the nonprofit organization known as the Jazz Arts Project. Now in its milestone tenth trip around the sun, Jazz Arts keeps a pretty busy year-round schedule in and around town; from a Talkin’ Jazz lecture series in the Jazz Appreciation Month of April, to December’s annual Sinatra Birthday Bash at the Count Basie Theatre (as well as other concert events featuring the Muccioli-led Red Bank Jazz Orchestra). Then there’s the Jazz Arts Academy, a partnership with the Basie’s Performing Arts Academy and a full-year affair in which high school and middle school aged musicians are able to “supplement their school music program, meet new players from the entire region and gain valuable skills and experience in a safe, fun and professional atmosphere.” The program jams on well after the final school bell sounds, with a Summer Camp Week (July 27-31) in which players aged 13 to 19 can learn to improvise and hone their chops with a faculty of pros augmented by visiting guest artists. Here in summer 2015, there’s also an all-new slate of guitar, piano, vocal and jam workshops open to ages 14 on up to the most seasoned of adult jazz prospects. Still, if anything has served to bring a touch of cool-cat climate to the dog-days interval of July and August, it’s the Summer Jazz Café, the annual four-week series of star-quality sessions that transforms the “black box” Marion Huber room at Two River Theater into the most sophisticated, intimately in-the-know, and exclusive (yet all-welcome) nightspot in town.

Jazz Arts director Joe Muccioli serves up a Summer Jazz Café of legendary sounds

FRIDAYS & SATURDAYS JULY 10-AUGUST 1 8pm | Two River Theater | 21 Bridge Av

A favorite feature of the weeks between main-stage seasons at Two River, the 8 p.m. Café concerts conjure up an engagingly old-school vibe in which music lovers can thrill and chill to some top-shelf name artists (plus coffee, tea and desserts), in a candlelit BYOB environment that’s free of nightclub noise and highbrow pretension. Throw in free parking at Two River’s on-site lot, and you’ve a perfect post-dinner (or pre-pubhopping) night on the town, for a fraction of what you’d pay to drive and garage your ride in the big city. The 2015 schedule sounds a smooth keynote on the weekend of July 10 and 11, with the return of a frequently sighted figure in Café society: pianist and vocalist Tony DeSare, who’s been praised by The New York Times as “one of the most promising young male performers.” The Friday-Saturday set of July 17 and 18 offers up a tribute to one of the unmistakable vocal stylists in classic jazz history: Billie Holiday, as channeled by award-winning singer (and professor of jazz vocal technique) Charenée Wade and her band. Meanwhile, the following weekend sees the Red Bank return of a genuine exemplar of living jazz history; one who’s played with everybody from Benny Goodman and Les Paul, to Rufus Wainwright and the early rock hits of Dion and the Belmonts—and whose road has taken him from the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall, to multiple Presidential audiences at a certain White House in Washington, DC. At the age of 89, master guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli continues to gig extensively, and the nights of July 24 and 25 find the veteran performer (who specializes in the rarely encountered seven-string axe) teaming with fellow fretmeister Ed Laub. In a break from the series format, the Café calls closing-time on its final weekend with a one-night-only July 31 appearance by Jon Faddis, the Grammy nominated trumpeter (and Mooche-described “monster artist”). The Friday set by Faddis and his quartet will be preceded by an opening interlude with the students of the Jazz Arts Academy Summer Camp—and the “young lions” of the Academy return to wrap the 2015 series on Saturday, August 1, with a full-length showcase of their savvy skills. “We expect capacity crowds for these shows; our audiences have grown each year, and our faithful followers have gotten the idea that anything we present will be a thing of quality,” explains Muccioli. “These will surely be the most exciting and romantic evenings you will spend all summer.” JAZZARTSPROJECT.ORG TWO RIVER THEATER 21 BRIDGE AVE, RED BANK BOX OFFICE 732.345.1400

MINIMIZING YOUR RISK FOR COLON CANCER

Most recently, Riverview became one of the few medical centers in the country—and one of only a few in New Jersey—to offer Combined Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery (CELS) for colon polyp removal.

by CAITLIN COYLE for Meridian Health

A

t Riverview Medical Center, small incisions, expert physicians, and outstanding medical care set the surgical patient experience apart from the rest. Thanks to advances in technology, as well as a highly-skilled group of physicians working together on many cases, Riverview is consistently at the forefront of surgical advances and provides the community with many options when it comes to surgery. Most recently, Riverview became one of the few medical centers in the country—and one of only a few in New Jersey—to offer Combined Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery (CELS) for colon polyp removal. Using this hybrid approach, Douglas Weine, M.D. and Subha Sundararajan, M.D., gastroenterologists at Riverview, approached a polyp endoscopically, while David Dupree, M.D., a general surgeon, approached it laparoscopically to remove it more easily, while sparing the colon. This combined approach allowed the physicians to view both the inside and outside of the bowel wall to locate and treat the polyp.

The CELS team of physicians at Riverview—(L to R) General Surgeon David Dupree, M.D. and Gastroenterologists Subha Sundararajan, M.D., and Douglas Weine, M.D.

“Most polyps found during a colonoscopy are safely and completely removed using different tools that we can pass through the scope itself,” says Dr. Sundararajan, director of advanced and therapeutic endoscopy at Riverview. “However, sometimes, due to location of a polyp or its size, removal through endoscopic techniques alone isn’t always possible or feasible. In the past—prior to having CELS as an option—traditionally, surgery was the next step, and this often involved removing a section of the colon.” According to Dr. Dupree, being able to remove the polyp using the endoscopic-laparoscopic hybrid approach is a patient-satisfier, in that it decreases procedure time, as well as time spent in the hospital. “Patients will have minimal scarring, thanks to smaller incisions, and it will reduce post-operative complications associated with more complex surgeries,” says Dr. Dupree. According to Dr. Weine, director of Medical Day Stay at Riverview, while most polyps are benign (or noncancerous), it is important that every polyp be removed to prevent the risk of it becoming cancerous later on.

TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT GETTING SCREENED FOR COLON CANCER.

“Colorectal cancer is currently the third most common cancer among men and women (excluding skin) and the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States. While the majority of people who suffer from it are over age 50, it can occur at any age,” says Dr. Weine. “It is important that everyone be aware of the symptoms or screening recommendations for colon cancer, as well as be aware of changes in bowel habits.”

I’m IMPORTANT I believe you should always maintain your health. You take your car in for tune-ups and maintenance. So, why wouldn’t you take just as good care of yourself? That is why I eat right, go to the gym, and stay active with my grandchildren. That is also why I get my annual mammogram at the Women’s Center at Riverview. The doctors at the Women’s Center are phenomenal. And, the new design makes it feel like you are at a spa. I especially like that you can coordinate your other diagnostic tests at the same time as your mammogram — so I can schedule my own “tune-up!” I am a grandmother. I am active. I am important. W

henever “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” Sly & The Family Stone’s 1969 hit, blares from an outdoor speaker somewhere along the Jersey Shore, it is hard for Navesink resident Zach Brinley not to hear it as “Spiced Rum in the Summertime.” Make that Brinley Gold Shipwreck Spiced Rum, if you would, bartender. Molasses-based, four-year-aged in once-charred American oak barrels, and blended with natural vanilla extract, nutmeg, clove, and orange, and exotic island spices. The island, in this case, being St. Kitts in the Eastern Caribbean, roughly 1,600 miles from Atlantic Highlands (and not much bigger) where rum company owners Zach and his father, Bob, ply the tricky spirits-trade waters from their headquarters in funky Avenue D digs a stone’s throw from Sandy Hook Bay. “Rum season is upon us!” Zach pronounces happily (at the crack of June), as though he had just won the lottery, which in a way he feels he has. He loves his work, partnering with his dad, and, after a decade of struggle, enjoying no small measure of success. That spiced rum, which DrinkHacker.com wrote, “Carries a big and flavorful kick” (all Brinley rums are 72 proof, as opposed to some popular brands that are 42 proof), was deemed Favorite Caribbean Rum by the About.com Readers’ Choice Awards 2013. Other flavors—Vanilla, Coffee, Mango, and Coconut—have been recognized as well. A sweep of his hand takes in a few open old oak barrels; kids’ sand buckets that, in a bar, carry rum; an empty bottle with a “shipwreck” message printed on the inside. Zach declares: “We’re growing like gangbusters.” Last year, Brinley and Co.—which, since 2012, has peddled its products as Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum (the spiced rum recipe is dedicated to an actual British troop ship that sank off the treacherous St. Kitts’ coast in 1782)— sold 180,000 bottles. This year, they expect to top 200,000. “We’re up to the point now where we’re probably a small annoyance to some of the bigger guys,” Zach says, citing the advantages of being a small-batch, family-run producer using only the best ingredients, whose growth has been organic and, lately, swept along with the small-craft beer revolution that has engendered consumer loyalty and passion for anything exemplary and unique. Today, Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum all but sells itself—and does so all over the greater Red Bank area, New Jersey, and in some 40 other states.

Zach is up now upon his open-laced sneakers to slide a business card across the table. Zach Brinley, Chief Bootlegger it reads. His current role is more product mover, brand ambassador, while his father, Brinley’s chairman, oversees the rum-making end of things, though they both do a bit of everything and always have. This often brings Bob to St. Kitts, where it all started. An accountant by trade and an aspiring entrepreneur by inclination, Bob, in 1980, met an engineer with an idea about temperature sensors that, six years later, led the partners from Fairfield, New Jersey, to St. Kitts, which, before the Far East manufacturing boom, was ideal for a couple of Americans to set up an electronics manufacturing plant. Zack, born in 1978, was the “lucky kid from Jersey” who vacationed there while his father “ran off with a brief case all stressed out.” The plant, in the 1990’s, was the largest employer on St. Kitts, with clients that included the U.S. Government. Soon, though, St. Kitts, as a manufacturing Mecca, found itself replaced by countries like China, and Bob was forced to close shop. “The Caribbean was going the way of tourism,” Zach explains, “so what do you do on an island my father loved, where there’s a new Marriot, a Four Seasons, cruise ships steaming in?” Fate intervened, in the form of a floundering distillery built there in the late 1980s by Baron Edmund Rothchild. “It wasn’t just an opportunity knocking, but more like it was punching my dad in the face,” Zach says. Circa 2003, Zach, then 25 and a 2000 graduate of Penn State, had left his Wall Street sales and trading job to join his father’s new venture, in partnership with the distillery. “They knew how to make the rum. We jumped into building the brand and marketing and the overhead.” The father-son team made up for a paucity of rum knowledge and shallow pockets with guts and enthusiasm, helping change the distillery’s image as a local “tourist bottle” to something bigger and better. By 2004, they were handcrafting their own Brinley Gold Vanilla Rum and had opened a small rum shop at the cruise ship port. Soon they were shipping product off island. The business really took off when the Brinleys forged a relationship with Opici Wines, a century-old New Jersey-based importer/distributor who, last year, invited them to join their newly formed import spirits division. Shipwreck now has over 600 accounts (400 stores and 200 bars) in this state alone. “It’s still our brand, our baby, but they handle everything from distribution and sales to marketing,” Zach says, which frees him up to conjure new products, attend trade events, and conduct in-store tastings, often in Atlantic Highlands. “I’m grateful to be in this business, and I’m loving being a local company, to have found this town,” says Zach. “It’s perfect.”

SECTION HIGHLANDS by CJ ANSORGE

TRYING TO GET

HOME It’s been almost three years since Hurricane Sandy swept through Highlands, but the Super Storm lives on for residents who are still caught in its wake, not able to get back into their homes. The St. Bernard project, the national disaster recovery organization founded in 2006, post-Katrina, in New Orleans (and named after St. Bernard Parish in that city) expanded its efforts after Sandy and is currently working in Highlands to help rebuild homes and lives here. SBP has rebuilt homes for nearly 900 families with the help of 100,000 volunteers in New Orleans, Joplin, MO, Staten Island, NY; Rockaway NY; and Monmouth County, NJ. Saturday, August 22, on the new boardwalk (once destroyed by Sandy and now rebuilt, thanks to the generosity of Barry Heffernen and his company, TriBar Services) in Veterans Park on Bay Avenue, Highlands comes together for a benefit concert to help raise $50,000 to support the St. Bernard Project and its work in the community. On SBP Wish List of “What your donation can do for a family in Highlands,” $50,000 is the cost for all tools and materials for one new home. $100 would buy one kitchen sink.

THE SOUNDS OF RECOVERY CONCERT Saturday August 22 noon til dusk Veterans Park, Bay Ave. Highlands Rain or Shine Recommended donation $15

The fundrasier is a rousing collaborative effort spearheaded by Valerie Browning, owner of Water Witch Coffee (67 Waterwitch Avenue) and SBP AmeriCorps member Julie Giebler who has come back to Highlands where she grew up. Highlands Business Partnership and its director Carla Cefalo-Braswell are pros at putting on special events and were on board for handling the paperwork, permits, approvals and critical logistics for the concert. Valerie wanted to bring new talent and new ideas about music to Highlands, as well as make the Jersey Shore connection in selecting the bands. She’s thrilled with the lineup of all top-notch musicians who are donating their time and talent to the cause: Dark City Strings, Karmic Juggernaut, Shady Street Show Band, Subject to Change, The Cranston Dean Band, The Underwater Sounds, and students from The Lakehouse Music Academy in Asbury Park. “It’s going to take the entire community to finish Highland’s recovery,“ says Julie. The Sounds of Recovery are a sure way for all and more to show up. Donations can be made online at stbernardproject.or/donate and be sure to specify Sounds of Recovery in your pledge.

S Local Portuguese Water Dog Competes at Westminster Kennel Club Show

usan and John Soviero from Little Silver are self-described “dog people” who have had many canines in the course of their forty-year marriage. (Currently, they have four.) Seven years ago, the Sovieros decided they wanted to go “all in” on raising a dog capable of winning American Kennel Club (AKC) shows. Decker, their Portuguese Water Dog, was the one that would take them all the way to the top—the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club (WKC) Show—and gather enough AKC show points to be named a grand champion along the way.

"Conformation judging is the most rigorous," says Susan Soviero who is the president of the Bayshore Companion Dog Club (bayshoredogclub.org) in Eatontown, a 65-year old organization that specializes in training pets and purebred dogs in obedience and agility. With conformation judging, the dog is judged to the specific body structure and appearance of the breeding stock, per American Kennel Club standards. The dogs with best conformation are more likely to produce quality, purebred puppies. Show dogs are expensive, both to purchase and to train. An AKC registered puppy from a good breeder can cost upwards of $2500. The additional costs for training, grooming, travel to shows, and use of a professional handler in the ring can mount up quickly. In 2008, the Sovieros acquired Decker from Monmouth County breeder Carolyn Iraggi who had held back a couple of puppies from a litter. "Breeders will do that when they think a dog has the look and the body structure of a potential champion,” Susan explains.

Oraggi’s instincts about Decker were correct. In 2009, he won his first championship in just 92 days—before his second birthday. As part of the agreement with the breeder, Decker was cross-trained in various AKC show disciplines, including performance, obedience, and agility. To become an AKC champion, a dog must win a total of 15 points in a number of shows. A dog can win as many as 5 points at any one show, depending on the number of dogs of the same sex entered in the classes. In those 15 points, a dog must win two majors, defined as at least 3 points, and those majors must be won under two different judges. To be eligible for entry in the classes at Westminster, a dog must have won at least one major in a previous AKC show. By 2010, Decker had won enough AKC points to be named a grand champion. The Sovieros competed weekends for several years, entering Decker in shows from Maine to Florida, and as far west as Illinois, amassing championship points on his way to the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club (conformation) Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He competed at Westminster for three years (2012-2014). "Decker earned his way with show points in the first year," Susan Soviero says. "In 2013, he was ranked the number three Portuguese Water Dog in the country and received a WKC invitation."

President Barack Obama with Bo, one of his Portuguese Water Dogs.

Each year Decker was entered at the Westminster show, he was competing with Matisse, the top-winning Portuguese Water Dog in the history of the breed. "There is no second place at Westminster," Susan Soviero explains. "When the judges pick the best of the breed, everyone else is runner-up." Today, Decker continues to train and compete in AKC events and the Sovieros also will show him, selectively, at conformation shows. As of 2014, Decker was still ranked in the top-twenty of his breed nationally. The Sovieros have had several Portuguese Water Dogs. Their first, Isaac, now ten, did not have a show career because of an injury. The breed has enjoyed new popularity since President Obama’s family chose two—named Bo and Sunny—to join them in the White House. The dogs have hair, not fur, and do not shed, making them a preferred choice for families with children who have allergies. However, John Soviero cautions that, while Portuguese Water Dogs are loving and loyal, they are strong-willed and need a lot of exercise and work, which takes time. “This is not a dog you leave at home for eight hours," he advises. With three Portuguese Water Dogs in their family, the Sovieros know what they are talking about—and would not have it any other way.

All About Animals A Three-Legged Cat Tale: THE STRAY THAT STAYED Lisa Scotppetuolo, pet technician at Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts in Tinton Falls, had been thinking for months about adopting a cat and was just waiting for the “right time.” As it turned out, a kitten was already on her way to going home with Lisa. The playful little stray was only a few months old when Ellen Garfunkle found her, limping and unable to get around easily on only three good legs. The fourth was missing its paw. An active committee member of the Purr’n Pooch Foundation, Ellen asked Foundation founder Dick Palazzo for help. First, Dick enlisted the medical services of Dr. Rachel Gordon of South Branch Veterinary Services. After the kitten was treated, he brought her to Purr’n Pooch Resorts for a foster stay where everyone fell in love with the tripod cat, especially Lisa Scotppetuolo who knew the “right time” (and kitten) had come. Recently, Lisa discovered that her long-awaited cat, Twinkie, loves doing tricks for treats. She’s learned to sit, twirl, lie down, “high five” and give kisses, loved and cared for at home with Lisa.

Lisa Scotppetuolo with her cat Twinkie

Unlike Twinkie, many feral and stray cats are not able to survive without the medical treatment, food and shelter provided by organizations that care for cat colonies and run trap-neuter-return programs that are key to combating cat over-population. The Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals (purrnpoochfoundation.org) awards annual grants to non-profit, no-kill animal and marine mammal rescue and welfare organizations, including All Fur Love (allfurlove.org), Alley Cat (alleycat.org) and Cat Assistance Network (facebook.com/pages/Cat-Assistance-Network) that make a difference in the lives of feral and stray cats. Donations to the Foundation support the good works of its grantees.

Jupiter Ventures Into Virgo August 11, 2015 September 9, 2016

by ALICE LOFFREDO

"Within man is the soul of the whole; the wise silence... to which every part and particle is equally related; the eternal One." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

F

or the past thirteen months upbeat, "lucky" Jupiter—the planet associated with optimism, confidence, and a big-picture point of view—has been twirling along happily in its orbit, passing through the fiery, outgoing, confident and creative sign of Leo. This highly complementary match-up of planet and sign urged us to expand creatively, to "live large," expand our view of the world and our place in it, and to simply have some fun. Now it's time to consolidate the gain, avoid going overboard, and start doing what it takes to manifest some of those big-picture ideas that may have come up during the last year or so. In other words, with its usual perfect sense of timing, the Universe is urging Jupiter...and us...to settle down and get real while the largest planet in our solar system spends time in the practical, detail-minded, hardworking, service-oriented earthy sign of Virgo. Now, as you may imagine, this is not the most comfortable combination of energies. Jupiter encourages expansion and "not sweating the small stuff" while Virgo is concerned with discipline, analytical thinking, and absolutely, positively "sweating the small stuff." But comfort isn't always, and shouldn't be, the highest priority. For example, when the skies of life cloud over, it’s perfectly OK to seek solace in a nice big bowl of your favorite gelato. But emptying the full container is another matter. There are times when self-discipline and constraint should be the order of the day, and can actually feel just as good as shoveling out that last spoonful of black raspberry/chocolate chip. That's the feel of Jupiter passing from Leo (“Scoops ahoy!”) into Virgo (“Close the lid and put the container back in the freezer!”). Jupiter traveling through the sign of the skillful helpmate ushers in a period when that planet's expansiveness can broaden Virgo's minutia-oriented energies, creating a combination that encourages creation of things that are the practical, useable results of Jupiter’s expansive thinking, but might never have seen the light of day without some earthy intervention. Jupiter is also about faith—faith in ourselves; faith in the world we live in; faith in the world beyond that. In Virgo, the planet urges us to pause and go within, and gives earthy life to the Emerson quote that starts this article, which speaks to both the big-picture “eternal One” and every “part and particle” related to it. Blessings on your way...
