SECTION ALL ABOUT ANIMALS

“If a man spires towards a righteous life, his first act of abstinence is from injury to animals.” Albert Einstein

TO +HE RESCUE

By LISA READIE MAYER

If you just gained a new family member with four paws, a furry coat and a wet nose, perhaps you were among the many who welcomed one of the 276 dogs recently rescued from a home in Howell. The situation was described by the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals chief law enforcement officer Ross Licitra as the worst case of animal hoarding in the history of Monmouth County. It triggered an immediate and overwhelming outpouring of concern and support from people nationwide, and a herculean effort by MCSPCA staff and volunteers to help the dogs—most of whom had never seen sunlight or been touched by human hands. While the severity of this case captured media attention, every day in our area, dedicated and caring people are quietly rescuing dogs, cats, horses and other animals from kill shelters, abusive or neglectful homes, or owners whose changing life circumstances caused them to surrender their pets. One of those behind-the-scenes heroes is Jen McFadden, founder of Home Free Animal Rescue in Red Bank. After her own dog died, she began fostering, taking in rescue dogs for a temporary period—usually two to three weeks—caring for and socializing them in preparation for adoption by a forever family. Since starting her own organization five years ago, Jen and her squad of 300 volunteers have rescued between 800 and 900 dogs, focusing on “the ones that need saving the most.” She says cute puppies and fluffy designer breeds—the “beauty pageant” dogs—are often quickly adopted. But, the “miss congenialities”—the older dogs, those who are pregnant 10

or have maladies, black dogs, “plain-brown-wrapper-mutts,” and so-called bully breeds like pit bulls—often languish or face certain death in out-of-state kill shelters. “We have the dogs with the best personalities,” she says. Sometimes it takes the loving persistence of her foster families to coax a sweet and playful personality out of a dog that’s scared or stressed. It also takes an extended network of supporters, including Fins & Feathers pet store in Red Bank, which provides free bathing and grooming, and financial benefactors who help cover transportation and veterinary costs. And, because urgent SOS calls sound regularly without warning, Jen also relies on the acceptance and support of her own family, who patiently tolerates when plans get cancelled and daily life is interrupted. Although Jen says it can be sad when a foster moves on, she tries to think of her role as that of a teacher. “It’s gratifying to be a positive influence in the dog’s life,” she says. “The dog has been a gift to me, and I get the joy of re-gifting it to a family who gains a new companion to love.” DonnaLyn Giegerich and her husband Tom Zapcic of Middletown can relate. Current parents to two cocker spaniels, over the years they have fostered some 15 dogs through the Wag On Inn rescue organization; raised a seeing-eye dog; made hospital visits with a therapy dog; and adopted two retired Standardbred racehorses. “Our work with animal rescue has brought an incredible richness to our lives,” says DonnaLyn, an insurance professional, leadership coach, and business consultant. “We got involved to help the animals, but our reward has been far greater. It’s extremely gratifying and we have enlarged our social circle with wonderful, like-minded people. I would highly recommend fostering to families whose kids are asking for a pet. It’s a great way to test out the responsibilities of caring for an animal first, before making a full commitment.” She and her husband did exactly that when they adopted two horses through the Standardbred Retirement Foundation. The group rescues older, Captions (L-R) Yougotit, adopted by April Colasanti (photo by injured and noncompetitive former harness racers Dominika Nawrot); Faith; Maxiumum Respect; Jen McFadden from tracks like Freehold with Scruffy; Maximum Respect; Kiwi Raceway, or purchases them from livestock auctions where they would likely have been sold for slaughter. The organization Second Call Thoroughbred Adoption and Placement, gives thoroughbred racehorses from Monmouth Park a second chance by resting and retraining them for a new life in a new home after retirement. In the 27 years since Judy Bokman founded Standardbred Retirement Foundation, she estimates the group’s 60 volunteers have facilitated 2,700 adoptions. The organization retains legal ownership and follows up twice a year for the life of the horses to ensure they’re getting proper care. “These horses may not be good racers anymore, but with a little training, they’re wonderful as companion horses, show horses, or trail-riders,” Judy says. “They are smart, have a super temperament, and can do anything.” The organization has about 200 horses under its care at any given time, boarding 50 to 60 adoptable horses on their farm in Cream Ridge, just west of Freehold, and others on a farm in Kentucky. Almost 130 of their rescues are considered unadoptable, due to injuries or other ailments, according to Judy, and live out their retirement peacefully on a farm in Virginia.

MEGAN & MIKE

YOSHI & MAGGIE

Being an entrepreneur is enough to keep anyone busy. Not Megan Prenderville. The co-owner, with husband Mike Harper, of Frame to Please, a custom pictureframing/art gallery in Red Bank, has another fulltime mission: animal advocate.

FRAME TO PLEASE & PAWS FOR A CAUSE

Several years ago, the energetic and upbeat animal lover launched a secondary business, “Paws for a Cause,” in a kiosk just outside the store’s entrance. She donates all profits on the pet-themed tees, hats and other merchandise to the Associated Humane Society in Tinton Falls. (In what she calls a “double dip of good,” Megan tries to use only vendors that give back to animal causes.) Megan also established a community collection site at the store for dog food, treats and supplies for the Humane Society. And, in between, she has volunteered for, or otherwise supported, countless animal-welfare causes, from fostering and adoption, to therapy dogs, to assistance with emergency veterinary expenses. The inspiration behind it all was Megan and Mike’s rescue dog Chopper, who, with his fur-brother Yoshi, were the frame shop’s longtime official greeters and pups-in-residence. After Chopper passed of cancer last fall, he came to the couple in separate dreams, encouraging them to rescue another dog to fill the hole left in their and Yoshi’s hearts. Enter new love Maggie. The nearly nine-year-old border-collie-hound mix, who Megan says was “the most broken and scared little girl” in the shelter, is now happily adjusting and enjoying her new life. “What a wonderful way to honor Chopper,” Megan says. And, another part of her long legacy of helping animals.

MIMI WITH HER FAMILY

REBECCA, CHIARA, SANG & EMILY YI Mimi has a pretty good handle on life in her Holmdel neighborhood. A township native, she’s lived there all her life. Nowadays, though, she’s pushing her boundaries of experience in a whole new world, in Eatontown, where she travels most days with her mom, Chiara Yi. Chiara is a co-owner of The Studio on 35, a newly opened atelier, where Mimi also works (with great enthusiasm, albeit somewhat haphazardly). Chiara drives.

THE STUDIO ON 35

The performing artists studio, which debuted on June 4, has been well received, and with good reason. “Parents of some of the students,” Chiara explains, “they’re like, thank god you opened this place, because now I can come here and get the same quality training that I would in New York without all of that mess.” The mess being expensive travel, expensive parking, expensive classes. “Everybody that we’ve come in contact with, the students, the parents, they’re all grateful we’re here, and very supportive of us and each other,” she says. Chiara used to schlep her two avid singing-and-acting daughters, Rebecca, now 13, and Emily, now 10 (Mimi, who joined the Yi family just three years ago, has other interests) into the city for professional training. It’s fun but serious stuff. Emily got several audition call-backs for the Broadway musical Annie. This, it turns out, was to start the ball rolling for The Studio on 35. Emily had to learn two songs in a short time, and her regular coach wasn’t available. Chaira’s husband Sang, a local, independent financial advisor, happened to be at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, and was advised to enlist the aid of one Theresa Fowler Pittius. Theresa teaches voice and has an extensive entertainment repertoire that includes off-Broadway, national touring productions, and film credits; she has also created and run various Monmouth County-based performing arts programs and touring productions. It was a match made in New Jersey. During this time Chiara and Sang—who both grew up in Matawan—continued to rent out the building they owned in Eatontown at 21 Main Street. That is, until their tenant left. Sang thought they might open some sort of business there for themselves. Chiara and Sang spoke to Theresa, who was excited by the notion of a local “unique and creative” venue, and became the nascent studio’s co-owner and creative director. Renovations were soon underway. A motto was informally adopted: “We’re bringing New York City-style training to the Jersey Shore—at an affordable cost.” Mimi enjoys her new home-away-from-home, and the students, ranging from ages four to 50-plus, enjoy her. The rambunctious Chihuahua, whom Chiara says serves as a kind of studio mascot, greets everyone as they enter the building (especially Rebecca and Emily), and after making sure all is copacetic, calms down and lies down. Until someone else walks in. “Everyone knows and loves Mimi and calls her by name,” Chiara says. The studio, which offers private voice/acting classes, Broadway Master Classes, resume building, audition coaching, and more, has grown from a handful of aspiring performers to around 40. They come from as far south as Manahawkin and as far nor th as Sayer ville. “Every day we get phone calls, people signing up for various classes, inquiring,” she says. “It’s really amazing.”

Crossing Borders 2016:

A Festival of New Plays by Latino Writers

August 3–7 | Two River Theater

A lively and enlightening celebration of new Latino plays and the artists who write them, the 6th Annual Crossing Borders Festival takes to the stage (and outdoor plaza) in August at the Two River Theater for its five day run. Hear a company of dynamic actors and directors read powerful, smart, funny, and personal works written by adventurous playwrights. Curated by Stephanie Ybarra—who currently serves as the Director of Special Artistic Projects at The Public Theater in New York, where she leads the Mobile Shakespeare Unit and produces the Public Forum series—this year, for the first time, the festival crosses formal and aesthetic borders by inviting proposals for projects in development from directors, actors, and musicians. Play readings, audience discussions, a keynote address from a leader within the Latino arts community, as well as a neighborhood kickoff party...fantástico!

7th Annual Rock Around the Block Party August 13 | 12–7 pm (raindate August 20) The Red Bank Community Block Party might be part reunion, part carnival, and part street fair, but for the throngs of people who attend (BETWEEN BRIDGE this annual event, it’s a grassroots celebration of Red Bank and its SHREWSBURY AVES) people… and it’s all fun! “We always had a block party in the 70s,” RED BANK recalls Freddie Boynton, president of the Red Bank Community Block Party LLC. “But, people moved away and it fell by the wayside.” When he and several others reached out to old family, friends and neighbors on Facebook and by word-ofmouth to gauge interest, they were amazed at the enthusiastic response. Thousands have turned out for the block party every year since. The free event features continuous entertainment on the main stage, including gospel choirs and praise dancers from local churches, performances by youth and theater groups, and a rotating roster of musicians and DJs to get everyone dancing. Great food ribs, barbecued chicken, fish, hamburgers, smoked turkey, and more—is on sale by neighborhood churches, lodges, and other vendors…plus carnival rides for kids, and vendors selling unique jewelry, clothing and other cool finds. Proceeds go toward funding two $500 college scholarships for Red Bank Regional High School Students. “The block party is about the whole community coming together for a wonderful time,” says committee member Darlene Tyler. “This is not just a block party for the West Side. We want to invite all of Red Bank to come out and join us. Let’s have a good time!” DRS. JAMES PARKER BLVD

TJ MOSS: Spreading His Wings

C

ompared to the age of most retailers, TJ Moss is a young pup. But the 24-year-old owner of Fins & Feathers pet store, 134 Monmouth St, Red Bank, has a wealth of knowledge and experience that belies his age.

As a kid, TJ would ride his bike from his Little Silver home to the store four or five times a week to check out the animals and visit with previous owner Helen Davis. When he was finally old enough to officially start working there at age 14, he continued after school and during summers for the next five years, before leaving to take a warehouse job. But, his love for the business stayed with him, and when Davis called in July of 2014 to ask if he was interested in buying the store, TJ jumped at the chance. He was 22 years old. The full-line pet store carries all types of fish, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, and other small pets. TJ does not sell dogs or cats, but offers kitten adoptions all summer – 100 were adopted last summer, down from 250 the year before. (“That’s a good sign people are spaying and neutering their cats,” he says.) He carries an extensive selection of premium dog and pet foods, treats, bedding, cages, habitats, toys, and nearly every other accessory one might need for a pet. The store also offers dog-grooming services six days a week; an area of the business TJ has doubled since taking over 18 months ago. One of the groomers he employees is his former boss, Helen. “It’s all come full circle,” he says, smiling. Animals aren’t just TJ’s business, they’re his passion. He has a menagerie of rescued and adopted pets, including a St. Bernard named Doof; a pit bull mix named Panda; a blue-tongued skink lizard named Helga; and a crested gecko named Lil Bro. Doof

“College isn’t for everybody; I get to do what I love,” he says. “I enjoy coming to work every day. I had a dream and I followed it.”

Recipe for Success HOMEMADE ULTRA-HEALTHY FOODS FOR ULTRA-HEALTHY ANIMALS

Story and Photos by ART PETROSEMOLO

T

here's commercial pet food, natural pet food, and then...there’s Dr. Harvey's: Fine Health Foods for Companion Animals, a health-based line of holistic organic blends of all-natural ingredients that cookup into nutritious homemade meals for dogs, cats, and birds. For more than thirty years, Dr. Harvey Cohen’s family-owned-and-operated business has championed the benefits of ultra-natural home-cooked meals for animals made from the finest ingredients—no dyes, preservatives or additives. Today, his “health begins in the kitchen” philosophy and his product line are shared by animal guardians across the country who count on Dr. Harvey’s foods to give their animals better, healthier, longer lives by feeding them his all-natural diet. Although feeding pets a healthy diet has been the trend for the past decade, for generations companion animals just ate scraps from the table. In the 1950’s, Ralston Purina, a Missouri-based animal feed company, introduced Kibble, the first dry food marketed specifically for dogs. Other companies jumped on the bandwagon with their own brands and, with mass marketing and advertising, pet owners were encouraged to only feed their companion animals with food branded for pets. In the 1980s, Dr. Harvey, a New York chiropractor with a strong background in nutrition, was encouraging his patients to eat well as part of a healthy lifestyle. Says Wendy Shakin-Cohen, company president and wife of the founder, “Dr. Harvey’s patients began to ask for healthy suggestions for their pets, many suffering from digestive ailments.” His own research had revealed that most commercial pet foods were more than 90 percent corn or included scraps, rendered meat products and ingredients that he felt were contributing to pet health issues. Canine Health Miracle Dog Food Holistic Blend of 6 Organic Grains and 9 Dehydrated Vegetables 32

Determined to do something about it, Dr. Harvey—a life-long animal lover himself—developed his own recipe. He began testing it with his own pets and asking his patients for field trials. The result was Canine Health Miracle Dog Food, followed by “ultimate healthy diet” products for cats and for

birds. They are all made with “human consumption ingredients”—and that means no “pet grade” ingredients or “seconds, and no preservatives or chemicals. Canine Health is a pre-mix requiring owners to combine the formula’s organic grains with fresh vegetables and meat that they purchase and then cook. One of the changes in the 1980’s that helped Dr. Harvey in developing the first Canine Health was the availability of freeze dried and dehydrated vegetables, as well as the increased availability of organic grains. Even with the added cooking time, the concept and the products were a hit, with pets as well as people who saw the benefits. Says Dr. Harvey, “Our foods have helped companion animals dramatically recover from conditions such as skin allergies, cancer, kidney and liver problems, chronic digestive issues, IBS, chronic diarrhea, bad breath and more.” The popularity of Canine Health helped grow a small kitchen-based operation into a thriving family-owned business based in Atlantic Highlands that sells a variety of food products for dogs, cats and birds and a line of herbal supplements for pets and horses. Dr. Harvey’s products were first sold (and continue to be featured) in independent pet stores where, according to Ms. Shakin-Cohen, retailers were looking for a healthy food alternative to offer. “Store owners had pets of their own,” she says, “and saw a big difference in their animals health on a Canine Health diet.” Today, Dr. Harvey’s products are available in 600 stores nationwide, as well as in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan. With the advent of the world wide web and the growth of A sampling of Dr. Harvey’s fine products for cats, birds, and dogs. on-line shopping, Dr. Harvey’s became the first company to sell natural pet food products on line in 2001, and now sells 50% of its products via web purchases from the company website or through on-line stores like Amazon or pet-specific sites, like Chewy.com. The company has grown steadily, but still prepares the foods in a very low-tech way, using only the best ingredients and under the watchful eye of Dr. Harvey. Even though the natural pet food industry that Dr. Harvey pioneered more than thirty years ago has grown to include small and large companies entering the field, Dr. Harvey’s is still a leader in the field today. “We may not be the biggest,” Ms. Shakin-Cohen emphasizes, “but we are the best.” DRHARVEYS.COM | 25 WEST HIGHLAND AVE | ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS RED HOT MAGAZINE We Love Local

ost footprints in the sand wash away with the tide. But at Hot Sand, a glassblowing studio in Asbury Park, footprints, handprints, and even pawprints, are preserved to last a lifetime. A process called QuickCast turns the prints into pieces of threedimensional art glass. Studio owners Thomas Stevens and Paul Elyseev and their team of artisans have helped customers create over 10,000 of the glass reliefs since opening in 2007, and thousands upon thousands of them have been pet paws. The process (walk-ins welcome, seven days a week) starts by pressing the dog or cat’s paw into a box of sand to create an impression. Molten glass is then poured into the sand mold. When it’s finished cooling, it is an exact replica of the paw, complete with the pillowy raised pads and recessed valleys that make each unique. Many customers say the blend of textures – smooth on the surface and coarse on the underside that contacted the sand – even reflects the different nuances of their pet’s personality. There are options to add color, or engrave the name and date to further customize the casting. “It’s a great way to capture the stage of puppy or kitten,” says studio manager Albert Dorsey. “Or, it can be a special way to memorialize an older pet who may be nearing the end of his life. It’s very comforting to feel like you are actually holding their paw in your hand.”

SECTION &BEYOND

n the earliest decades of Asbury Park’s history—even before Atlantic City held its first Miss America pageant—it was the annual Baby Parade that brought hundreds of thousands of visitors to the beachside boards, for an ever more elaborate display of fancy floats, costumed kiddies and celebrity guests.

By TOM CHESEK Photography by BRIAN HALLAS

In the 20th century, the Easter Parade attracted scores of participants decked out in their seasonal bonnets and Sunday bests. Then with the coming of the new millennium, a resurgent Asbury Park laughed at reports of its premature demise, as the NJ Zombie Walk brought Guinness-record numbers of well-behaved “walking dead” to the downtown and waterfront. On a peak-season Saturday last summer, a boardwalk packed with townies and tourists witnessed the newest addition to the merry march of time—when a colorful procession of MERMAIDS (and pirates, and seahorses, and shellfish, and jellies) took to dry land to celebrate our shore’s seaside heritage, with a nod to the spirit of diversity and community. And on Saturday, August 27, The Asbury Park Promenade of Mermaids surfaces once again, for a second annual session of “Fin in the Sun.”

Promenade of Mermaids

Scheduled to set sail at 2 p.m, the Promenade is the brainchild of city resident Jennifer Mehm, the former Red Banker whose pelagic pedigree includes the founding of the successful Sacramento Promenade of Mermaids, in the years when she called that California capital home.

Saturday August 27, 2pm Second Avenue Pavilion (across from the Stone Pony)

These days, “Jenn Mehmaid” bases her operation at Mermaid Cottage, a cozy cove of a dwelling that’s accoutered with all conceivable manner of mer-themed tchotchkes, gewgaws and sundries (and that attests to a lifelong fascination with the fabled finny folk of the sea).

“When you’re a kid, mermaids are something beautiful and exotic,” says Jenn, speaking during a break from her entirely serious surface-world career in healthcare management. “But the appeal probably has more to do with not fitting in...a sense of living life between two worlds, a celebration of freedom.”

Boasting a costume contest, fun prizes from local vendors and discount tickets, the family-friendly event starts and finishes at the “Second Avenue Pavilion” (across from the Stone Pony) with merch table plus checkin and registration between noon and 2 p.m. While it’s free to take part in the Promenade (and just as free to cheer on the promenaders), participants have the option of officially registering for a $5 charge (marchers must be registered to be considered for prizes). New for 2016 is an alliance with Clean Ocean Action, with a portion of all proceeds dedicated to the Sandy Hook- based nonprofit and its initiatives for coastal environmental preservation. Best Costume and runner-up prizes will be awarded for adults, along with first, second and third prizes for kids 14 and under. Prize sponsors range from local landmarks like Days Ice Cream, Vintage Variety and Carla Gizzi, to recent arrivals like Booskerdoo Coffee, Chocolate Sage, Big Spoon Little Spoon and Bettie’s Bombshells (who will award their own prize for “Best Bettie Page Mermaid”). Scheduled guest judges include Asbury arts catalyst Juicy Jenn Hampton (of Parlor Gallery, the city’s outdoor art project, and the legendary Asbury Lanes), Stephanie Silk (star of the new Asbury-set indie film “Let Me Down Hard”) and art class conductor Tim “Dr. Sketchy” Lucas. Grand Marshal “Miss Vivi Noir” will crown a King and Queen for the day, and emcee Don Dazzo (of celebrated NJ bands The Whirling Dervishes and Everlounge) will announce the winners in front of the Casino at 2:30 p.m., with an invitation to stay for an official group photo. From there, the fun moves to event sponsor Marilyn Schlossbach’s Asbury Park Yacht Club, with a display of mermaid-friendly craft vendors and an after-party for old salts of ages 21 and up. And, for the second consecutive year, the Promenade of Mermaids will take place concurrently with another recently minted summer tradition: the day-long Asbury Park Surf Music Festival, going on inside and outside the Anchor Bend bar at Convention Hall. “I would love for the Promenade to grow into a weekend-long event like the one in Sacramento,” says Jenn Mehmaid of the city-sanctioned attraction. “I like the idea of it evolving incrementally and organically...and our Mer-Army is definitely getting stronger by the day!” The siren call is out for all costumed mermaids, pirates and sea creatures to join in the fun this year—as well as for volunteers to assist in the afternoon’s activities on August 27. Visit asburyparkpromenadeofmermaids.com or email AsburyParkPromenade@gmail.com for more info; follow the event on all major social media platforms, and remember that motto: “Keep CLAM and Promenade On!”

Integrating a New Language into Cancer Care

T

he word “cancer” changes everything. A new language filled with strange terminologies becomes commonplace. While facing so many changes at once, being in a familiar place can be helpful.

by APRIL GUILLERME for Riverview Medical Center

When Riverview Medical Center’s new cancer care center opens in September, those living with a cancer diagnosis will have the opportunity to receive personalized care close to home. Not only will the center offer the most cutting edge technologies coupled with a uniquely healing environment, but every element of patient care, including décor, amenities, and patient services, will be designed to promote comfort and healing. “It’s not enough to physically heal patients,” says Debra Camal, M.D., a breast surgeon with Riverview who specializes in breast cancer. “Cancer brings with it an extraordinary amount of stress and fear that people must also face. As a result, I, along with many other physicians, also recommend that patients and their families seek support and find what works best for them to help them cope.”

“With the opening of the new cancer center at Riverview and increased access to integrative medicine, we are supporting patients along the entire healing journey; one that takes the whole person into consideration.” Debra Camal, M.D., medical director, breast surgery, Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital

While support groups and programs such as art therapy, which utilizes creativity as a method of expression, and pet therapy, which brings in animals to help with patient’s social, emotional, and cognitive aspects, have long been part of Riverview’s cancer program, the new center will also apply a multi-disciplinary care model for treatment.

This approach brings together physicians and caregivers from a variety of specialties and disciplines and puts the patient at the center of care. From physicians and surgeons to nurse navigators, research nurses, genetic counselors, dieticians, and palliative care providers who offer relief from symptoms and stress associated with serious illness, this approach generally involves a combination of conventional medicine and complementary alternative treatments to achieve optimal health and healing. Debra Camal, M.D.

Should patients wish to further incorporate alternative therapies into their care, the Meridian Center for Integrative Health & Medicine, opening in July, will provide patients with a customized health and wellness plan based on five pillars: activity, nutrition, purpose, resilience, and sleep. Some of the offerings will include nutrition counseling, biofeedback, medical acupuncture, health psychologists, integrative medicine physicians, and more. All programs and services will help address the mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social influences that impact overall health. “Keeping healthy in all respects is a key component to beating cancer,” says Dr. Camal. “With the opening of the new cancer center at Riverview and increased access to integrative medicine, we are supporting patients along the entire healing journey; one that takes the whole person into consideration.” By utilizing this multi-disciplinary approach to care, Riverview and Meridian Health will integrate a new language of healing into cancer care.

For more information about the new cancer center at Riverview Medical Center, please visit www.MeridianBuildingHOPE.com. To learn more about the Meridian Integrative Health & Medicine program, please call 732.994.7855.

TREATING THE ANIMAL, NOT THE DISEASE

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO PET HEALTH Veterinarians Dr. Alexia Tsakiris and Dr. Penelope Rochelle are old friends in a new venture. THRIVE is their Veterinary Wellness Center (31 Church Street, Little Silver, thriveveterinarywellness.com) that integrates complementary holistic medicines with traditional veterinary practices. The pair joins a new wave of veterinarians that believes that dis-ease is a manifestation of disharmony in the body that needs to be addressed for the body to function at its optimum level. Holistic medicines work to restore balance and harmony and are incorporated into a total treatment plan. At THRIVE, the treatment of health issues and wellness for small pets incorporates acupuncture, herbal medicine, spinal manipulation and other holistic approaches.

Dr. Alexia Tsakiris and Dr. Penelope Rochelle

“This isn’t what we were taught in vet school more than a decade ago,” says Dr. Tsakiris, “but both Penelope and I studied it and embraced it as we saw evidence of its value in animal wellness.”

The two, friends since grade school, attended different veterinary schools. Dr. Penelope Rochelle graduated from Ohio State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr Alexia Tsakiris graduated with her BVetMed from the Royal Veterinary College in London after her receiving her B.S. from Cook College, Rutgers University. While working in different Monmouth County practices, the future partners renewed their friendship at a professional seminar and realized that they both were proponents of holistic therapy. Three years later, they were ready to open THRIVE. She’s a magician,” says Sue Famularie of Middletown, holding her 16-year old dog Buster, who had just received a spinal manipulation procedure from Dr. Rochelle. “Her work with Buster has made all the difference in his well being as a senior dog.“

K

arma: it’s a belief that a person’s intentions and actions determine his or her future destiny and fate. In other words, good deeds bring future happiness, and Gail Doherty, co-owner of Good Karma Vegan Café, Red Bank, believes being good to animals, as well as the land, employees, customers, and the community, has created the karma that has returned good fortune and success to the restaurant and its owners. This concept has been central to the mission since Gail first opened the doors with business partner Tiffany Betts six years ago. “We started on the premise of making quality food with love, not just selling it to make money,” she says. “The response has been incredible since Day 1 and we have grown ever since.” It was a philosophy both women learned while students at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health & Culinary Arts in New York, a professional chefs’ training program that focuses on preparing seasonal, locally sourced, whole, organic, fresh foods for physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

This similar mindset brought the partners together to fill the void for a vegan restaurant in the area. The two work well together, sharing cooking responsibilities and collaborating on menudevelopment. As working mothers, they are supportive of each other when children’s needs take priority and one must step up to cover for the other. The restaurant also proved to be a supportive environment when Gail was displaced from her home for over two years after Superstorm Sandy. “I used work as a way to pick myself up again and focus on positive things,” she recalls.

themed specials for each day of the week: Mac & Cheese Monday; Taco Tuesday; Pizza Wednesday; Fat Sandwich Thursday. Recent specials (posted with drool-worthy photos on the restaurant’s social media accounts) featured Alfredo mac & cheese with roasted vegetables and grilled tempeh; spicy buffalo cauliflower tacos with fresh pico de gallo and guacamole; homemade pizza-dough stromboli stuffed with tempeh sausage, tofu ricotta, roasted peppers and onions; and seitan “wheat balls” sandwiches smothered in marinara, roasted red peppers, portabella mushrooms, caramelized onions, and shredded Daiya mozzarella.

One of those positive things, according to Gail, is that “today, more and more people are hip to the idea of eating this way, or at least eating less meat. Previous generations ate very simply and according to what was in season locally. Part of our philosophy is

You would never notice—or miss—the fact that all dishes are made without any animalderived ingredients. “We build layers of flavor with condiments, vegetables and other interesting toppings to make food special, flavorful and really fun,” says Gail.

“It’s about using natural foods to nourish and heal our bodies,” Gail explains.

You would never notice—or miss—the fact that all dishes are made without any animal-derived ingredients. “We build layers of flavor with condiments, vegetables and other interesting toppings to make food special, flavorful and really fun…” to get back to eating more whole, fresh, organic foods. There’s more life force in those foods.”

(facing page) Coconut Berry Breakfast Bowl; (this page) above: Golden polenta smokey tempeh and sauteed kale stacked on grilled potatoes; (R) Fat Sandwich; (Below) Catering platter Crudites and Hummus

There’s a flavor force, too. The extensive menu features flavor-packed breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert options, with vegan remakes of traditional dishes like Southern-Style Biscuits and Gravy with vegan sausage, and “Live Lasagna” with zucchini “noodles,” sharing space with new-wave combinations such as the Coconut Bacon C r u n c h Wr a p ( a flour tortilla with tofu scramble, home fries, coconut bacon, chipotle sour cream, Daiya cheese, blue corn chips and hot sauce), and the Indian Plate (curried tofu, brown rice, chana masala, veggies and homemade chutney and papadum). But it’s their rotating daily specials where the chefs’ creativity really shines. Besides breakfast, lunch and dinner specials featuring seasonal, locally sourced produce (often from the Red Bank Farmers Market), this year Good Karma introduced

Good Karma also offers juices, smoothies, soups, and “live-food” dishes made from raw fruits and vegetables, sprouted grains, nuts and seeds. The restaurant recently expanded its dessert specials with glutenfree cakes and cookies daily. Food is available for dining-in at one of the restaurant’s 10 tables, or for take-out. Full-service catering, from small dinner parties to large wedding or corporate events, as well as custom cakes and desserts, are also available. Somehow, the chefs manage to pull off these incredible food feats in the postagestamp-sized, store-front restaurant—just 900 sq. ft. in total, including the open kitchen and dining areas. “We are tiny, but mighty,” jokes Gail. “Our space is small, but our customers are great and don’t seem to mind. Running a small business is difficult, but we feel blessed. We feel like we are in a bubble of light. We are all part of a bigger picture and believe if we give good karma toward animals, people and the land, and we’ll get good karma in return.” Good Karma Vegan Café | 17 East Front St 732.450.8344 | GoodKarmaCafeNJ.com Open Mon-Sat 9am–9pm; Sun 5–9pm

VW Karmann Ghia

by ALICE LOFFREDO

In Sync

When seemingly random occurrences aren’t random at all

Y

ou’re walking down the street and a car pulls out of a parking slot. There on the ground is a refrigerator magnet in the shape of a star-struck half-circle with a big round moon face staring out of the middle of it, an exact replica of the design of your new business card. For many, it’s just an interesting coincidence. Others may recognize it as more than that.

I’m a true believer in a benevolent Universe, one that uses its limitless wisdom to deliver just the information and experiences we need to guide us down here in what astrologer Steven Forrest calls “the galactic grammar school.” Synchronicity is a major one of its tools. Circumstances or events occur without logical cause-and-effect connection, but are recognized as meaningful by someone attuned to looking at things symbolically, recognizing them as a message, and who may act in some way because of it. Let me tell you how I know this really happens.

The Tale of the Karmann Ghia My husband and I spend our summers and early fall in a picturesque town on the Jersey Shore where porch sitting is high on the list of our preferred activities. There we were, rocking away, Don with his New York Times, and I with Steven Forrest’s latest book. I had just applied to join his training program in San Diego and had a slim-but-cherished hope that I would be accepted. “Don. What a coincidence! Forrest is writing about wanting to buy a Karmann Ghia years ago. You never see those cars any more. They haven’t made them for more than 25 years. You know, the first car that Ralph (first husband) and I ever bought was a used KG!” And as I lifted my head with this report, what comes sashaying down Main Avenue but a snazzy mustard-colored KG. And, damned if a parking spot for it doesn’t open up right across the street. After the 30ish couple parked and headed for the beach, down I went to the street for a close-up inspection. Running my hand along the smooth polished fender, I got a frisson of excitement: I’m heading to San Diego. I just know it. The matching business card and original magnet.

The next week, I got the e-mail. I was in! And then, only days later, September 11th. How could I leave all whom I love here on one endangered coast and fly to the other?

October came and I was still agonizing over the decision, leaning more and more towards not going. On the porch again, I was taking some technical notes from Forrest’s book and decided to reread the story of the Karmann Ghia, to remind myself that the Universe is at work even in times like these, and that all will be well again someday. And what, against all odds, defying probability and even sanity, comes ambling up Main Avenue, but the Karmann Ghia, moving this time from the direction of the beach toward the main highway out of town. As if to say, “Follow me!” And so I did...and it meant the world for the work I do. These seemingly random occurrences aren’t random at all. So look for them. They’ll be there. (And yes, the magnet is still there on my fridge.)
