when synchronicity finds you, especially when it met us at the crossroads of this 11th Year Anniversary issue of RED HOT and our coverage of the bright new era dawning on the West Side of Red Bank. For those who follow such things, steel is the traditional material associated with gifts to celebrate a decade-plus-one of togetherness, in our case the happy marriage of our magazine to the marvelous communities we cover. The steel fire doors in the historic Eisner Building were the perfect symbol, photographed for our cover by Danny Sanchez whose studio on Bridge Avenue is as solid a part of the neighborhood as the majestic metal doors.

elcome to the neighborhood, a slice of vibrant life on Red Bank’s blossoming West Side in the heart of the Arts and Antique District where the Two River Theater, The Galleria, and the Red Bank Antique Center have been the long-standing anchors along Bridge Avenue. And now, here come the brand new West Side Lofts and soon-to-be revitalized Anderson Building, the new kids on the block of buildings, and possibilities are about to change. The changes aren’t just a coat of paint on a familiar borough face. Rather, what has happened—and continues to happen—is a bold evolution of space and the structures that inhabit it. More than fresh brick and mortar, it is also about relationships: each building to another, to their respective inhabitants, and to the area as a whole.

West Side Lofts at the corner of Bridge Avenue & E. Front Street

Credit for the latest installments in the ongoing renaissance of the West Side district go to Metrovation, a privately owned specialty real estate development company launched in the early 1980s in California, with an office in Red Bank. Its stated mandate is to conceptualize and create “unique properties that bring new life and new possibilities to places.” If the proof is in the projects, just look to The Grove at Shrewsbury or Brook 35 Plaza in Sea Girt or any of the properties developed, owned, or managed by the Metrovation in New Jersey, California, and Washington to see where the neighborhood can be going. Chris Cole, a partner at Metrovation and lead person on the development project, is a people-person for whom a blue print can’t match on-site ruminations and real world input. “Part of it, with me, is being totally hands-on and touchy-feely,” he explains on a recent tour of the building site. “Like, how’s it feel walking in? What should we change to make it more vital, to make it right?” An overriding concern, he says, is remaining true to the character of the community in which the project is located—and open to improvements. “We don’t believe a property is ever completely finished, but always in the process of ‘becoming.’” ‘Becoming’ are his two new ambitious West Side projects. The so-called Anderson Building, located across from the Red Bank train station at 200 Monmouth Street, is currently a vacant turn-of-the-century warehouse once owned by Anderson Brothers Moving & Storage. The property was bought, in 2006, by Metrovation, with plans for renovation that are active again after delays caused, in part, by a flagging economy that is now turning around. Then there’s West Side Lofts, a “luxury rental

RedHot5_14_PGS1-11:Layout 1 8/27/14 11:45 AM Page 11

Chris Cole on site at West Side Lofts

community” at 1 Bridge Avenue, currently under construction on the site of the former Blaisdell Lumber Company. Like the Anderson Building, West Side Lofts is a stone’s throw from the train station—an important part of the Metrovation mix. “We try to create our residential properties next to mass transit, so there’s less use of cars,” says Chris, an ardent bicycle rider. “Here, you can peddle to downtown Red Bank for a cup of coffee, or walk to the train and go to the city. It makes for a less hurried and healthier life.” There will be bike storage at both new facilities and plans are in the works to make an automobile available to West Side Lofts residents.

“We don’t believe a property is ever completely finished, but always in the process of ‘becoming.’” Chris Cole, partner Metrovation

Lush and lavish landscaping is a signature of Metrovation properties and is planned to enhance the experience here. “All the growth makes it feel better. Picture vines all over that wall…,” he says with a sweep of his hand and a vision he can see from the drawing board stage. Pending final borough approval, he hopes to start construction on the Anderson Building by next spring. In development are add-ons to the original structure that, when integrated with the old, will include “green” decks, and offices on floors two through four. On the first floor will be a bazaar-like retail-restaurant mixaround a central court. Big garage West Side Lofts rooftop lounge and deck doors will open in the summer. Outside, by the parking area, will be shipping containers for use as storefronts, restaurants, and an apartment. “It’s kind of a funky addition to the neighborhood that you wouldn’t find anywhere else,” he says. “Cool and eclectic” are terms he uses to describe West Side Lofts. Owned, developed, and managed in partnership with New Jersey-based Woodmont Properties, the Lofts will begin occupancy in December. 92 residential units offer options of one and two bedroom finished lofts, two-story town homes, and three-story live/work maisonettes with roof deck. Approximately 25,000 square feet of retail space will be anchored by microbrewmeister Adam Rechnitz’s Triumph Brewing Company, adding Red Bank to other locations in Princeton, New Hope, and Philadelphia. Amenities at the Lofts include a private courtyard, a rooftop lounge and outdoor deck with hot tub, BBQ grill, fire pit, and views of the Navesink River. There will be a strength and cardio fitness center, business center and game room on premises. Glass enclosed walkways—there’s lots of glass at the Lofts—connect the buildings.

The old neighbor? It’s still there with the Farmers Market on Sundays in The Galleria parking lot and the new season starting at The Two River Theater and the Santa’s Train coming into the Red Bank station for the holidays. But there’s a new shine to old places. Here, more of what is old, decrepit, or underutilized is being rebuilt, repurposed or made new once again. To Chris, it’s all about where you live and the places you frequent and how you feel and experience them when you are there. Somewhere north of more-than-just-right is what he envisions for Red Bank.

Since opening his hair salon six years ago, Glen Goldbaum has been a creative whirlwind for community development on the Westside, building a burgeoning client base while dreaming up a slew of cultural options to bring people to, what he describes as, “the wrong side of the tracks, but right.” He started with 1000 square feet of salon space that’s grown to 2,500. Now, there’s the Den, Lambs and Wolves—three conceptual spaces strung along Bridge Ave that interconnect as one hair/eye/make-up studio and is its own work of art—intimate space packed with creative energy that includes music and art happenings, charitable events, and beauty services that bring hundreds of clients to his door—227 new ones, in fact, in July. October 15, Glen is opening his three styling storefronts to the public for a music event matched with an urban art show. gleng72.com

GET IT IN WRITING

Along with producing plays, the Two River Theater Company wants to help the writers who pen them and actively seeks out new works by playwrights; composers, lyricists and librettists; and translators and adaptors of classics. They also offer commissions and provide readings, workshops, and artist residencies to benefit both established and emerging writers. So if you’re one of those, contact Anika Chapin, Literary Manager, at achapin@trtc.org

Nuestro Barrio (Our Neighborhood) is the theater’s new series of free, storytelling workshops for the local community and all who identify as Latino or Latina, regardless of national or ethnic background. Led by award-winning playwright Tanya Saracho and Jerry Ruiz, director and curator of the theater’s annual Crossing Borders festival of new Latino plays, the first workshop in April met at Señor Pepper’s on Bridge Avenue. There are free events, shows and programs planned throughout the year that could lead to stories that become plays that make playwrights whose works might one day be performed on the stage of the Two River Theater. Call 732-345-1400 or visit tworivertheater.org to receive updates and invitations to Neutro Barrio events.

How You Can Stress Less

W

hether you’re 13, 35, or 65, stress, hormonal change, and even the media can affect your health, body image, and well-being. Everyone worries and feels anxious at times. Monica Bais, M.D., and Anthony P. DeNoia M.D., primary care physician partners of Atlantic Highlands Internal Medicine, affiliated with Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital, share their advice on dealing with stress and anxiety.

“One of the most important aspects of a healthy lifestyle is getting enough sleep,” says Dr. DeNoia. “Lack of sleep can worsen symptoms of anxiety and make you feel more stressed out.” Although sleep needs are individual, research suggests that adults need at least 7 to 8 hours of rest a night. “When you're battling stress and anxiety, treat yourself to extra sleep when you need it,” adds Dr. DeNoia. “I encourage all my patients to exercise regularly,” says Dr. Bais. “Consistent exercise has multiple benefits from reducing anxiety, releasing endorphins, boosting your confidence, not to mention making you healthier.” Whether you’re an exercise newbie or a 5K runner, try to spend about 150 minutes a week exercising. Monica Bais, M.D.

For many of us, junk food is the first place we turn when faced with anxiety. “Instead of turning to our friends Ben and Jerry, focus on eating healthy, balanced snacks like vegetables or fruit the next time you’re having a rough day,” Dr. Bais says. “While watching what you eat is important, watching what you drink is just as important,” adds Dr. DeNoia. “When dealing with anxiety, cut back on how much alcohol and caffeine you drink.” Drinking too much alcohol or caffeine can heighten anxiety and even contribute to a panic attack in some cases.

QUICK TIPS for Fighting Anxiety 1. Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep 2. Exercise 3. Cut the junk food 4. Avoid alcohol and caffeine

Anthony P. DeNoia, M.D.

Dr. Bais recently joined Dr. DeNoia at Atlantic Highlands Internal Medicine. Now, Drs. Bais and DeNoia ask you to join them Wednesday, October 22 from 6:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m. at the Two River Theatre in Red Bank as they discuss ways to help you get tuned in to your health – from sleeping well, eating right, and exercising regularly. SONNY’S BLUE PERIOD

by TOM CHESEK

A SHORE MUSIC LEGEND PAINTS A NEW CHAPTER

RedHot5_14_PGS22_33:Layout 1 8/29/14 12:57 PM Page 23

Opposite: painting by Sonny Kenn; below: Sonny with his JBD guitar.

H

e’s been hailed by Bruce Springsteen as the first true rock and roll star of the Jersey Shore—a sharp-dressed frontman and guitar ace whose never-ending tour has taken him to every legendary room in local music history; from the famous Upstage, Student Prince and Asbury Hullabaloo, to the FastLane, Mrs. Jay’s and Big Man’s West, (the Red Bank club founded by Springsteen saxman Clarence Clemons).

His projects, over the course of fifty-plus years, have included combos with names like Sonny and the Starfires, The Blazers, The Wild Ideas—and an early lineup of that E Street Band incubator known as The Sundance Blues Band. He’d even form a “power trio” with his good friend Southside Johnny Lyon. While European fans and journalists have crossed the pond for an audience with Sonny Kenn, music lovers in his home base of Red Bank need only travel as far as the Walt Street Pub (180 Monmouth Street, waltstreetpub.com). It’s there that this Dean and Jedi Master of all Shore rockers holds court (to crowds ranging “from 25 to 61”) in a long-running monthly engagement; putting a forever-fresh spin on blues essentials, and gracing a lifetime’s worth of originals with his elegantly raw guitar calculus. Anyone who gets the wild idea that Mr. Kenn is somehow slowing down should know that Sonny’s got a brand “new” gig—as a gallery-exhibited painter of richly detailed oil studies. The skilled artist (and designer of custom guitars) is currently enjoying his first-ever solo show; a retrospective of paintings, photos, video and memorabilia that remains on display through September 28 at the “Where Music Lives” storefront museum on Asbury’s Cookman Avenue. As you might have reckoned, music plays a part in Sonny’s artworks, created mainly at the artist’s Reckless Place studio space— a successor to his former “fortress of solitude” garage loft on Bridge Avenue. With gleaming guitars often substituting for floral arrangements and fruit bowls in his still lifes, the painstakingly crafted paintings “take months of work…the one titled ‘Devil’s Cut’ took more than 140 hours…but for me it’s all part of an exciting process.” It’s also not a new trick for the veteran musician, who majored in fine art at Trenton State College in the 1960’s—and whose conversation is peppered with passionate references to the works of Miro, Klimt,

“The more serious I got about playing guitar, the more I got into painting…to me it’s the same creative impulse as writing a song.” Kandinsky and the Old Masters. But then, Sonny Kenn was always cut from a different bolt of finely tailored cloth than many of his bearded and blue-jeaned bar-band contemporaries—a sartorially splendid figure in gold blazers, Italian high-roll shirts, Spanish boots, carefully coiffed ‘do and sunglasses after dark. “Blessed with a good visual memory,” he recalls watching his father, a country-western Song Wrangler, play shows at Colorado’s Garden of the Gods; colored lights playing off the majestic rocks as the audience attentively watched his dad play (“how cool was that?”).

“But really, the more serious I got about playing guitar, the more I got into painting…to me it’s the same creative impulse as writing a song,” says the multi-faceted artist who can wax eloquent on Muddy Waters or Michelangelo; Leonardo or Link Wray. “You never know where inspiration will come from…you hunt for that perfect thing, and you analyze your instincts to see if they hold up.” “And you never know how one of your ‘stray children’ will behave,” he adds. “Someone told me that my song ‘Dance a Little Closer’ became their wedding song, and it’s moments like that, that make you feel you’re connecting…that you might have touched somebody’s life in some way.”

Photo : courtesy of J. Backlund Design Guitars

Indeed, back when teenaged Sonny appeared regularly at Eatontown Shopping Center—the precursor to Monmouth Mall, where he’d open for everyone from Jerry Lee Lewis to chimp celeb J. Fred Muggs—he’d “open my guitar case, prop up my pictures, and see if anyone liked them.”

“It’s the same way with a painting,” says the performer whose own son, Lonnie, has continued a three-generation Kenn family music-making dynasty. “You have to know when to release it to the world…somebody out there wants to bring something you did into their home, make it part of their life. And that’s pretty cool.”

ike Boylan and Jon Crowley are two Atlantic Highlanders who can’t wait for Halloween—and who can blame them? They and a growing group of other volunteers get to haunt the magnificent Strauss Mansion up on the hill, scare lots of people (more than a thousand came for the chills last year), and raise funds that help to preserve the historic property for Halloweens to come. Jon has worked in TV for nearly 25 years and is an executive producer for truTV (“Not Reality. Actuality.”) with shows like “Lizard Lick” and “Impractical Jokers” on his CV. Mike Boylan is a movie-maker/producer/director for films and commercials. They both know how to put on a good professional show with actors and costumes and special effects and (very important) a script. Speaking about Frightlands productions, Jon says, “We’re not just making a spook house. We come up with a really fun story line and weave it through the house for tension and drama...layer it over with all the scares...build big special effects and gags that help with the experience...and, as important, the historic mansion is its own brooding character—looming large in all the planned frights; a unique setting unlike anything else you'll find in these parts.” For this year’s tour, Mike and Jon worked with their partners at the AH Historic Society, Lou Fligor and Joanne Dellosso, to outline a plot that involves a circus

Strauss Mansion Council President Lou Fligor’s family roots go down three generations in Atlantic Highlands and, like many of his neighbors and fellow members of the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, he cares about the Strauss Mansion and its place in his town’s history. “This is a very historical town and history means a lot here,” he says. “The Strauss Mansion was built in 1893 and it’s the only Queen Anne Victorian mansion open to the public in Monmouth County. It was slated for demolition in 1980 and the Historical Society was able to save it and continues to restore it.” It’s an all-volunteer effort with fund-raising a top priority to do the work that is needed on the house and meet historic-preservation standards. The Mansion is on both the State and National Historic Registers. Rebuilding the porches, putting on a new roof, replacing rotted balusters...currently, there is a $30,000 matching grant being used to restore the double pane wood windows.

“Adolph Strauss lived on 49th Street in Manhattan and had a mercantile business importing wares and novelty items from Germany,” Lou explains. “This was the family’s summer cottage—a 21 room mansion with three floors, full basement and walk around porches!” Every Sunday, the Strauss Mansion is open for free, self guided tours with volunteers available to answer questions and fill in the history. Fundraisers go on throughout the year. It is now a museum and the home of the AH Historical Society.

coming to town in Atlantic Highlands and mysterious events start to happen in the Mansion and the spirits come back to tell their stories. The shows last 20 minutes and are put on with a cast of 40-50 actors in full fright. The tours can be tamed down to PG and families with young children are asked to come early so adjustments can be made on the spook meter. Outside on the grounds, a crypt and other graveyard accoutrements help set the scene. Scary movies are on the program this year with showings at the Strauss Mansion leading up to the Tours: The Atlantic Frightlands Committee was formed to celebrate the Halloween season and promote the non-profit organizations (the Atlantic Highland's Arts Council & the Atlantic Highland's Historical Society), businesses, and seaside village of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS

ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS

Rosemarie Kelly A Most Interesting Life

a

Believing that everyone has at least one good story to tell, Rosemarie Kelly penned a true account of her grandmother’s courageous and most interesting life.

Rosemarie Kelly has lived in Atlantic Highlands all her life. Born in 1927, she grew up here through the Depression and WWII and the changing of times and generations. She can easily recall when the train stopped in town, and when there was a fountain on West Avenue where horses could get a drink, and when the threeblock amusement park on Bay Avenue burned down, and the Mandalay cruise ship docked at the piers that stretched out from the Atlantic Highlands coastline.

Along with being a mother of five, grandmother of twelve, and great grandmother of ten boys and one girl, Rosemarie Kelly is a writer with two published books and a third in progress...an artist and active member of the Atlantic Highlands arts community and area guilds... and a consummate memory keeper who “finds each new day exciting, interesting, and well worth living.” Oil Painting | “Oh Canada My Canada” Rosemarie found subjects for her paintings in the places she visited as a travel agent and owner of Dukes Travel on First Avenue, AH

or Valerie McLaughlin, her retirement dream was to save enough money to open a coffee shop by the ocean. Then she moved to Highlands three years ago with her family and started going to the Water Witch for coffee and Kenny Harber’s legendary pastries and baked goods...for the checkered floor and the vintage enamel-topped tables...for the easy neighborhood feeling and sense of community and way people came together at the Water Witch to talk and swap stories and pass the time of day. In July, Valerie took early retirement from whatever she thought her life would be, and became a business owner. She bought the Water Witch. A Culinary Institute graduate, Kenny Harber owns the building that he bought in 1981 to start his own wholesale baking company. He added retail when a good friend, Jerry Gerson (aka Java Jerry) opened the first Water Witch Coffee and Tea Co in 2006. Kenny’s always done the baking “He just touches food,” Valerie says, “and it turns into a piece of heaven.” She’s keeping all the things she’s loved about the breakfast-brunch-and-coffeeshop, while trying some new ideas of her own. Adding music and art to the menu is one of them that creates a local café scene at night. Water Witch Songwriter & Open Mic night started in the summer and will be a monthly event, every third Saturday. Hosted by Christine Santelli, a Blues Hall of Famer, musician and songwriter who does open mic nights in Manhattan, it’s an easy fit and already a hit here. Art openings are another. Highlands is a haven for artists and now there’s a new gallery space to show art at the Water Witch. When artist Stacey Pritchard had the first exhibit in July-August, she sold four paintings. Ana Zalacain paintings are up for the fall show. Valerie and Kenny are dreaming up new food items for the nighttime events. Bar pies, pulled chicken sliders, lobster streudel, roasted-beet-andgoat-cheese salad...And as Valerie can tell you standing behind the counter in her own coffee shop by the ocean, dreams do come true.

A Very Special Home 50 CORN LANE | SHREWSBURY

by ALISON BEEBER

S

S E C T I O N R E A L E S TAT E

hrewsbury is one of the oldest communities in Monmouth County with settlement that dates back well into the 17th century and a history that graces life there today. Patriot’s Isle, Shrewsbury Quiet streets. Elegantly preserved buildings. Plantings and grounds that recall the original crossroads village of another era. It was the bucolic, timeless nature of the neighborhood off Sycamore Avenue, close to Shrewsbury’s Historic Four Corners, that attracted Chip and Maria Schulz, the current owners, to the property at 50 Corn Lane. They knew they had found the place where they could raise their family and have all the benefits of country life in a vibrant, contemporary setting. They would custom-build a home that would keep them from the madding crowd, yet close to the quality and convenience they required for shopping, dining, transportation and lifestyle options. Chip and Maria are empty-nesters now, ready for new chapters after raising their children in this house at the end of a completely private cul de sac—a custom-designed residence that has every amenity to offer for a complete and elegant resort lifestyle. The last detail of this three-story brick residence has been carefully thought out, artfully designed and creatively appointed using only the finest materials. A dramatic two-story entrance foyer leads into the elegant interior with features that include radiant heat, cherry and stone flooring, Clive Christian kitchen cabinetry, granite counters, and Marvin windows. Five bedrooms and three levels of approximately 6,000 square feet of living space provide room for family life, friends and entertaining on a grand scale. Outside, on manicured grounds, a heated gunite salt water pool with spa, pool house, patio and veranda provide for outdoor relaxation and recreation. Inside, there is an entertainment center in the full basement with theater, bar, game room and gym. And so it is that, in this grand home on a pristine lot on a quiet street in a peaceful town, one family found the perfect spot to make their own history in the historic town of Shrewsbury.
