If you’ve been to Red Bank, you know the art scene there is flourishing, taking off in all directions and luring art lovers from throughout the area and beyond. We spoke recently with artist Tara Amelchenko, a Point Pleasant native and resident of Asbury Park, who manages Detour Gallery on 24 Clay Street. Detour is currently under renovation, with an expected opening sometime between the Holiday Season and the Spring.

RED HOT: First, the art. What can we expect to see on your walls? TARA: The kind of honest work that has something to say. Everything from folk art to street art.

RED HOT: What in your background makes you a natural for the job? TARA: I studied at Pratt Institute, worked for years throughout Italy on fine art, decorative, and restoration projects. I then moved back to Manhattan to work with movie ad muralists and to exhibit as a fine artist. My mom is a very talented painter, and my father is an amazingly creative architect; he did work for gallery owner Kenny Schwartz, which is how I met Kenny and got involved. RED HOT: I understand Mr. Schwartz owns local car dealerships. Why the interest in art? TARA: Kenny is a self-described “art freak;" he's an avid collector with a great eye. He's a wonderful guy to work with, and is like the patron saint of artists. We have a lot of fun. Kenny has always wanted to provide a contemporary art center for the Jersey Shore, one that would offer its residents a place other than NYC to enjoy modern art on a large scale.

RED HOT: And the name? TARA: The original name, Wunderlust, was jettisoned in favor of Detour, which Kenny came up with. He travels a lot and often takes the road less traveled in search of the undiscovered artists who try to make a living where it's affordable, often on the outskirts of major cities. Artists are always the first ones to be kicked out of a great neighborhood after they've created a cultural scene or simply enhanced that location's character. When taking these "detours,” Kenny finds them, these hidden gems, these purists, and wants to offer that enjoyment to others by way of Detour Gallery. RED HOT: You’re renovating a 9,000-square-foot space in an old vacant warehouse. What’s the plan?

TARA: Well, the exterior walls of the gallery will function as a canvas itself, while housing imagery and murals from the exhibiting artists and celebrated street artists of today. Its roof will feature master artisan Sergio Furnari’s life-sized sculpture. Local architects Paul Amelchenko and Steven Raciti are working together to preserve the integrity of the building's history and its “beautiful industrial bones,” in addition to enhancements that will allow it to stand alone as an architectural statement for Red Bank.

RED HOT: Is there anything else that makes your gallery different from the others?

TARA: Yeah…EVERYTHING!

But it’s not all about sales figures, says the man who, in no small measure, was an integral part in their achievement. Joe Wajda, general manager of World Subaru and World Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram, which is located across the street, is celebrating his tenth year with the company. He’s especially proud of World’s charitable involvement with the community, and its approach to running a business. “We take great care of our employees—there is very little turnover—and we take great care of our customers. We like what we do. It’s not just about selling cars; it’s about building relationships with local families.” It’s an operational philosophy that Joe learned from his mentor Kenny Schwartz, a Red Bank entrepreneur who entered the auto business in 1973 and, today, owns the World dealerships, including World Volkswagon in Neptune. In 2005, a then 24 year old Joe Wajda had the good fortune to be hired by Kenny and taken under his wing. “Kenny helped me grow in the dealership,” he explains, over the years giving him more and more responsibility, allowing Joe to take the initiative with the firm understanding that the customer be his number one priority. A former finance manager for the DCH Auto Group, Joe was also a New York musical director and piano player. He’ll be back at the keyboards in March to accompany singer and actress Patti LuPone in a number she’s scheduled to perform at the Count Basie Theatre, and will be directing a choir as well. “I will play a small role,” he says. The Count Basie Theatre, like music, is close to Joe’s heart—and to World’s. “As an ardent and proud sponsor, we’re very involved with the Theatre,” he notes, “and supportive of the arts in general. They’re an integral part of education for youth and a focal point of our local community.” World is also a big supporter of the Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation, Inc. in Marlboro. “By the end of this year our goal is to help them raise close to $100,000 for children with cancer throughout Monmouth County,” says Joe. Life at the World Family of Dealerships is anything but static. To meet the growing demands of its business, they’ve started renovations on World Jeep that, in a year or so, will result in a major overhaul. And next year World Subaru will likely undergo a significant service facility expansion. “It’s a family here at World, and we all get along with each other,” says Joe. “It’s a great place to work.”

IT’S

an arts corrido that’s both whimsically and matter-of-factly described as running “from Matawan to Manasquan”— a surprisingly eclectic concentration of creative energy; centered in and around the various local whistle-stops of New Jersey Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line. And sitting right at the heart of the “MoCo Arts Corridor” is station stop Red Bank. It’s there, within the venerable Count Basie Theatre building, just down Monmouth Street from Red Bank’s distinctive gingerbread train station, that you’ll find the headquarters of Monmouth Arts . Relocated in late 2014 to a street-level space from its former digs on the theatre’s second floor, it’s a modestly scaled small office presided over by longtime Executive Director Mary Eileen Fouratt—with a “window on Main Street” vibe that finds it newly situated amid the hubbub of the Basie’s busy box office, the big buses of the internationally touring talent, and the hardworking hopefuls of the Count’s Performing Arts Academy.

“There are a lot of mural projects happening now,” says Acerra, citing the example of a Belmar-based painting project as one that allowed members of the community to grab a brush and take part in the creative process. “It’s cool to see it catching on…it creates landmarks for visitors, and it’s a positive for residents who like to have some input into these very visible works of art.” Outdoor murals and other public-space art installations are among the attractions spotlighted in the MoCo Arts Corridor project, as well as an online public-art mapping project being coordinated with the Monmouth County Division of Planning. This is all in addition to the regular programs that Monmouth Arts has established and maintained over its 40-plus years of history—a rundown that includes the annual Teen Arts Festival at Brookdale Community College; the Art Education Awards; a yearly Networking Meeting for member artists and organizations, and the nearly $100,000 in Art Helps grants disbursed each year to countybased entities and initiatives (including Red Bank Street Life, Monmouth Civic Chorus, Phoenix Productions, and the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council) through the NJ State Council on the Arts.

According to Monmouth Ar ts Community Engagement Manager Danielle Acerra, the place known as “Monmouth ArtSpace 105” is also the epicenter of an ambitious “creative placemaking initiative” that seeks to map out, catalog and highlight all that the county’s coastal communities have to offer in the way of visual art, music, theater, film, and other cultural offerings from a frankly awesome arsenal of treasures—a service not just to visitors, but to local residents who may not have been aware of all the exciting things that have taken root in their own backyard.

A relatively recent addition to the staff (and a granddaughter of the late and legendary composer-conductor Nelson Riddle), Acerra details some of the ways in which Monmouth Arts home base is made available to the area’s creative community—ranging from the quarterly art exhibits displayed on the member gallery wall, to an ongoing guest-hosted “Workshops for Creatives” series designed to “give artists the different tech and marketing tools they need to thrive in our economy.” On weekends, the ArtSpace is commandeered by the Red Bank Visitors Center and its longtime director/ambassador, Margaret Mass.

What’s more, Monmouth Arts continues to award $500 Mini-Grants to such beneficiaries as the Brookdale Visiting Artists series and the Social Community Activities Network—money that’s raised from corporate and individual private donors, through Geraldine Dodge and other foundations, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and (in the case of the state funding) by hotel/motel taxes.

That said, it’s what’s going on outside the office that’s most of interest to Monmouth Arts—and in between the array of activity taking place at major arts hubs within Red Bank (the Basie, Two River Theater) and elsewhere (Monmouth University, the Asbury Park oceanfront, Algonquin Arts Theatre) is a renewed emphasis on “public art.”

Above all else, Monmouth Arts sees its primary mission in fostering a sense of community among the disparate towns of Monmouth County, as well as the energetic creative class that has chosen to make its home in an increasingly diverse corner of the Garden State. A feeling and sense of common purpose that unites the veteran artists of Roosevelt with the newest tech-savvy arrivals of Asbury Park; the stewards of such favorite homegrown institutions as the Monmouth Symphony and the Art Alliance with the founders of the newest neighborhood arts collectives. “That’s what we’re about…it’s what my job is, and it’s also what I love to do,” explains Danielle Acerra. “Connect people. Bring them together.”

Following the Two River Theater critically-acclaimed productions of August Wilson’s Jitney (2012) and Two Trains Running (2013), the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright’s Seven Guitars opens the TRT new season with Brandon J. Dirden making his directorial debut. Wilson’s work, and especially his seminal “American Cycle”—10 plays set in each decade of the 20th-century that are uniquely calibrated to the African-American moment—are classics of American theater. Seven Guitars is the fifth play chronologically. Set in Wilson’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1948 after WWII, it represents the 1940’s entry in his Pittsburgh Cycle when the dichotomy of a thriving, prospering America was the backdrop for the illusionary dreams of a cast of seven colorful and complex characters, each given at least one sizzling solo. Seven Guitars features cast members Brittany Bellizeare (Ruby), Brian D. Coats (Hedley), Crystal Dickinson (Louise), Jason Dirden (Canewell), Charlie Hudson III (Red Carter), Kevin Mambo (Floyd Barton) and Christina Acosta Robinson (Vera)…”the next generation of Wilsonian greats!”

The chemistry between brothers Brandon and Jason Dirden was first evident on the stage the two actors shared in the Two River Theater 2012 production of the high-octane thriller, Topdog/Underdog. Now, they continue their family affair in the Two River production of August Wilson’s Seven Guitars, with Brandon making his directorial debut, Jason in the part of Canewell, and Crystal Dickinson, Brandon’s wife, joining the company in the role of Louise. It’s not the first time the talented trio has worked together. In 2008, Jason performed at the Kennedy Center salute to August Wilson’s 20th Century American Cycle of plays and, that same year, was offered a part in the Signature Theatre production of First Breeze of Summer. Jason’s character had an older brother and he took the opportunity to recommend his older brother, Brandon, for the part. Brandon got it. His character had a fiancée. After auditioning, his wife and fellow actor, Crystal Dickinson, soon joined the cast.

First Breeze of Summer was our big coming out together in New York,” recalls Dickinson, who appeared on Broadway in 2012, in Clybourne Park. “The three of us support each other artistically in all that we do. We never stop collaborating.” Brandon and Jason have both appeared on Broadway: Brandon, as Dr. Martin Luther King, in the 2014 Tony Award winning Best Play, All The Way; Jason in the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun, starring Denzel Washington.

“As an actor, it’s really about taking an audience on a journey through the lens of my character,” said Brandon, who was in the cast of the Two River Theater production of Jitney by August Wilson. “Now, as the director, I’m responsible for helping the audience join in on everyone’s journey.”

Benson immediately sent out his own email, to a special list, and within five minutes the bird and its owner were happily reunited. Another time, a friend stopped by the Third Avenue house, where Benson lives with his wife, Sarah, and their three kids. The friend was wearing a snazzy jacket, though the weather was hot. “Know why I’m wearing this?” the friend said. Some time before, Benson had sent out a notice regarding a local tailor. The jacket, rather worn until this tailor restored it, once belonged to the friend’s deceased father. The tattered pocket lining was left untouched. “That was where I always would reach in to get candies from my dad,” the friend explained. These anecdotes, while not universally earth shattering, Benson allows, are “little windows” into the kind of network, or forum that he and Sarah and other borough residents are building in their effort to make a difference in ways both small and large—and just plain have fun together. They call it the Front Porch Club. Rocking chairs notwithstanding (this is, after all, a quaint Victorian bayside borough with a tight knit population of some 4,322), since its launch by Sarah in 2004 the ever-growing group has raised around $70,000. Last year, at FPC’s 10th Annual Chilifest, they drew a crowd of 500 and pulled in over $10,000, earmarked for the Henry Hudson Tri-district Education Foundation (created by Sarah). During the year monies raised by FPC go to a variety of local causes; they started out with the local library and food pantry, and branched off from there.

This year, in recognition of the 11th Annual Atlantic Highlands Front Porch Club Chilifest, the theme is "Spinal Tap," the heavy metal 80's mockumentary which references a special amplifier that goes "one louder to 11."

Today, FPC supports everything from local book clubs and kids play groups to social events and online initiatives, and welcomes newcomers to the community. When they’re not spearheading some effort themselves, FPC works as “a kind of a platform to help local organizations launch and build support for whatever they’re interested in,” Benson says. Apart from fundraising, FPC helps others generate publicity, and serves as a clearinghouse for volunteers. When Benson and Sarah moved from New York City to Atlantic Highlands, 12 years back, they hardly knew a soul, and there was no viable way to connect. Front porch and living room socializing with neighbors sparked in the couple the idea to make the get-togethers more inclusive and regular. They held a meeting (“More of a party, I’d say,” notes Sarah). About 40 residents showed up, all interested in discussing issues affecting the town, sharing ideas about how to improve things, and willing to enjoying a bite and beer or two while they were at it. “The point was instead of just having a traditional newcomers club, we wanted to bring the whole town together across generations,” explains Benson.

The concept took hold, and by 2004 FPC was official. That September, Chilifest debuted as a pull-your-grill up, strut-your-best-pot-of-chili neighborhood gathering on the Chiles’ front lawn. By around the fifth year, the fest moved to larger quarters at the landmark Strauss Mansion Museum—and for the first time FPC asked attendees for donations to support local causes. FPC’s email list was also expanded (at present there are more than 500 FPC members), and allows would-be advertisers to display their logos on email that is sent out three or four times a week. The list is also used to announce local events and activities, along with lost dogs and parakeets. Having now outgrown the Strauss Mansion, this year’s Chilifest—chaired by Joe Bowbliss (taking over for past chair Charlotte Magee who heads up FPC’s social committee)—September 26, on the beach at the Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club, can handle more people. Monies raised will again go to the Henry Hudson Tri-district Education Foundation. Chili cook-off entrants compete for prizes in four categories: Best in ’Fest, Most Exotic, Vegetarian, and People’s Choice. There’s live music by Blind Owl and Jake & Dan, Atlantic Highlands Carton Brewery beer on tap,

Brinley Gold flowing at the Shipwreck Rum Bar, and, of course, plenty of chili. Bring your oven mitts and dancing shoes. For Benson and Sarah, the FPC is a labor of love, as they say, especially for a couple that holds down demanding day jobs. Sarah works in New York running a foundation that supports kids in foster care. Benson is a consultant for national environmental organizations concerned with ocean issues and fisheries and conservation. “Benson is from Texas but luckily loves to fish, so the Jersey Shore was a good place for him,” says Sarah, who grew up in this area. “There’s been a lot of energy around the organization since the beginning,” says Benson, “so we’ve kept the focus really local.” “And I have to say,” notes Sarah in regard to Atlantic Highlands, “it’s just a terrific place to live. KAREN L. SCHNITZSPAHN The daughter of a magician and a mask maker, Karen Schnitzspahn is a native of New Brunswick, New Jersey. For many years, she worked as a professional puppeteer and puppet maker, designing educational puppet programs for children statewide. In the mid 1980s, she met historian George H. Moss Jr. (1923-2009) with whom she coauthored Those Innocent Years, 1898-1914, Images from the Pach Photographic Collection (Ploughshare Press, 1993) and Victorian Summers at the Grand Hotels of Long Branch, New Jersey (Ploughshare Press, 2000). An Album of Animal Companions, A Collection of Turn-of-the-Century Photographs and Ephemera (Coast & Pines Press, 1995), is a rare volume that features photographs that Karen printed from original Pach glass negatives. Her books for the popular Arcadia “Images of America” series include Little Silver (1996), Little Silver, Vol. II (1998), Belmar (1997) and Belmar, Vol. II (1999) with coauthor Sandra Epstein. A longtime fascination with early theatrical personalities led to Stars of the New Jersey Shore, A Theatrical History (Schiffer Publishing, 2007). Jazz Age stories handed down by her family provided the inspiration for The Roaring '20s at the Jersey Shore (Schiffer Publishing, 2009). Jersey Shore Food History: Victorian Feasts to Boardwalk Treats (The History Press, 2012) satisfied her craving for the cultural history of foods. Karen was the 2007 recipient of the Jane G. Clayton award presented by the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders for her “outstanding efforts to preserve the history of Monmouth County.”

When I was l growing up in central New Jersey during the 1950s, I idolized the “perfect” women on television shows. They wore big swishy skirts and flowered aprons and spent a lot of time in the kitchen. I wondered why my mom looked so “different.” A working artist, she donned blue jeans, sandals, and dangling earrings. She was outspoken, and I was often embarrassed by her feistiness. By the time I finished high school in the mid-1960s, things were changing. The second wave of the feminist movement was taking shape, and my happy-homemakers-cookie-bakers were replaced by movers-and-shakers like Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem—and, finally, I came to realize that my unconventional mom was really a great role model. In 1970, I moved to Little Silver with my growing family and became interested in local history. My friend and mentor, Rumson author and historian George H. Moss Jr., was an inspiration and encouraged me to explore and write about our area’s past. Theatrical stars, Victorian people and their pets, the “Roaring 20s,” food—they all became my subjects. Over the years, an interest in women’s history grew, along with my files about extraordinary women—trail-blazers past and present—who lived, worked, or summered on the New Jersey Shore. My articles on them began to get published and, in 2014, The History Press gave me the chance to author “Remarkable Women of the New Jersey Shore,” my new book that traces a timeline back to the Native Americans and first European settlers. In the early nineteenth century, when much of the seashore was still wilderness, rugged women managed boarding houses and taverns. As the area developed, prospects diminished and, often, the only jobs most women could find were as domestics at hotels and mansions. Sometimes, when their husbands died, women would take over. A widow from Howell, Sarah Patterson Johnson, became the assistant lighthouse keeper on Sandy Hook in 1864, working with her brother, who was the head keeper. At the turn of the century, seasonal visitors to the Jersey Shore included a prosperous New York butcher who rented a summer bungalow in Highlands and taught his daughter, Trudy, how to swim by dangling her from a rope in the Shrewsbury River. Gertrude (Trudy) Ederle grew up to be the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1926 and trained in the currents off the Highlands where a park is named in her honor.

KED UP NEW BOOK Remarkable Women of the New Jersey Shore

A chapter about women lifeguards includes Doris Pflug who became Belmar’s first female lifeguard (or “surf constable” as the position was originally called) in 1943 when World War II caused a labor shortage on the homefront. Doris was in her nineties when I interviewed her and it was a joy. Entertainers are featured in the book, not only because I enjoy writing about them, but because of their importance. The diving horse act at Atlantic City’s Steel Pier lasted from 1929 to 1978. During The Depression, the daredevil female riders helped the economy by attracting tourists to Atlantic City. A section of the book is devoted to musician Patti Scialfa, a member of the E Street Band first and Mrs. Bruce Springsteen later. She and her husband were both born in Monmouth County and made the Jersey Shore home for their music and their family. Recognizing the challenges faced by contemporary leaders, I chose Cindy Zipf, the dedicated ocean advocate and executive director of Clean Ocean Action, and Sea Bright Mayor Dina Long who demonstrated her strong leadership abilities during Super Storm Sandy and in the long recovery that has followed. My selections are personal and diverse. A temperance leader, a painter, a doctor, a WAVE, an African American cosmetics entrepreneur, a novelist, a chef…cranberry pickers, garment workers, domestic servants—it’s an amazing collection of contributors to women’s history, and there are many more. Super Horse American Pharoah | HASKELL INVITATIONAL It was a Monmouth Park milestone when the historic Oceanport thoroughbred track welcomed its first Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah to the 48th running of the Haskell Invitational, August 2. Pharoah had caught the attention and imagination of the country in 2015, capturing the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes—the first horse to do so in 37 years.

New Jersey owner Ahmed Zayat had promised racing fans that the super horse would not retire after winning the Belmont stakes and chose Monmouth Park for the horse’s next outing. Pharoah did not disappoint his fans taking control of the mile and one-eight race as he rounded the home stretch turn and shifted into another gear pulling away from the field. American Pharoah will end his racing career—barring an injury—in the Breeders Cup classic race at Keeneland Race track in Lexington, KY at the end of October before starting a second career as a stallion where his stud fees are expected to approach or pass $200,000.

t’s a bustling Tuesday night at Anemos as groups of families and familiar faces mix with young “foodies” and relaxed restaurant-goers. Helen Arvanitis, former teacher turned successful restauranteur, seamlessly works the intimate space of her restaurant inspired by her favorite Greek islands, Santorini and Mykonos. A motivated leader born into a family of restaurant owners with over 40 years of experience, Helen tends to her customers while assisting her staff.

Flowing through the kitchen with ease, she gives a nod to Executive Chef Sotirios Kontos who smiles as he whips up house favorites Youvetsi (slow braised lamb shank), Lavraki (Greek imported Bronzino) and the Galaktobourneko Napoleon dessert. “We are both young,” she says of herself and Chef Kontos. “We are hungry to create behind the line, and get visibly ecstatic about our dishes!” The dining area also holds true to the authenticity of Helen’s vision. Adorning the walls are colorful pebble mosaics representing the beaches of Mykonos and swirling winds that are typical throughout the island. “Anemos means full force wind—one of the strongest forces of nature,” Helen explains. “The name has everything to do with the intensity I felt while opening my own restaurant.” The beige accents throughout the space remind her of the sandy beaches, the blue glass ornamental pieces speak for the crystal blue waters, and the soothing drapery across the ceiling represents the defining feature of the “Island of the Winds.”

“I wanted to offer a modern, lighter twist on traditional Greek recipes.”

The evening is in full swing as Helen returns to tending to her establishment. Encouraging a guest to pick out his own fresh catch from the magnificent fish display, she passes by a large table of happy patrons and stops to lead them in the traditional Greek toast to match the joyful spirit of dining at Anemos. MILK MOM of monmouth county JEANINE DOODY & HER DOOR-TO-DOOR TWO RIVER DAIRY Story & Photos by ART PETROSEMOLO hrewsbury's Jeanine Doody is a nurse practitioner caring for cancer patients at New York's Sloan Kettering Hospital. To her children's friends, however, she's the "milk mom." A budding entrepreneur, Jeanine started Two River Dairy this year to provide families with quality dairy products (milk, cheese, butter), along with seasonal products, and local specialty foods, that she delivers to their doorsteps.

"I truly believe it is important that we eat fresh, locally-sourced dairy, fish, foods," she says. "Not that I don't eat Fruit Loops occasionally, but as the mother of five children—like many, many moms today—I want my family to eat healthy."

TWO RIVER DAIRY 6 months +

Morning home dairy deliveries all but disappeared with the growth of large grocery chains that offered a variety of milk (in paperboard cartons with polyethylene lining) and dairy products. But today, a number of boutique operations similar to the Two River Dairy, link internet ordering with home delivery, bringing the freshness of the farm to family doorsteps, even in urban-suburban communities.

Jeanine moved to Monmouth County a year ago from Bedford, New York (40 minutes north of the Tappan Zee Bridge) where she had access to local dairy and farm stores. Living in Shrewsbury, she missed the freshness of local foods and found, communicating with friends on social media, they also were interested in good nutrition and locally sourced products. With the help of Christopher, her husband of ten years, Jeanine put together a business plan last spring and started operating Two River Dairy in June. She sourced dairy and some specialty items like olive oil, smoked salmon and honey from regional suppliers, including Battenkill Valley Creamery, Salem, NY; Meadow Creek Farm, Pleasant Valley, NY; Kriemhild Creamery, Hamilton, NY; and Trappers Honey, Clarksburg, NJ; and offers them to customers who order on the Two River Dairy website (tworiverdairy.com). She delivers milk in glass bottles—as well as other products— to coolers on customer porches. Her regular route runs between midnight and 2 a.m every Wednesday, and takes her from Monmouth Beach to Freehold. After only a few month of operation, Jeanine has nearly 100 families ordering from her website. She visits farmers' markets, food fairs and small artisan shops to source products and add to her customer list. Reaching out to local farms that are seeking an outlet to distribute their products, she hopes to add new items as they become available. "It's old school quality and freshness—with the help of modern technology—in a pre-packaged age," says Jeanine, with a smile. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
