OCCUPY by TOM CHESEK

Festive Forces Have Taken the Capital of Holiday Cheer

RH6_14_PGS1_13:Layout 1 11/9/14 4:05 PM Page 11

SECTION RED BANK

W

hile some communities have been accused of waging a War on Christmas, in Red Bank it’s customary to welcome the occupying forces of festivity, as they roll into the area’s undisputed Capital of Holiday Cheer. To cheer Santa’s squadrons of industrious elves and marching wooden soldiers, and to greet them as liberators from the late-autumn doldrums. It’s a slate of activities centered around the Count Basie Theatre, that workshop of holiday entertainments, where CEO Adam Philipson and his crew have twice-checked their customary list of traditional favorites and new surprises beneath the tree—everything from the Scrooges and Nutcrackers the community has grown to embrace, to a collection of night visitors that, at least in one case, boasts a decidedly alternative view of the Yuletide cavalcade. Add to the mix the goings-on at the Two River Theater and the landmark Tower Hill Church— as well as all around the streets, sidewalks and storefronts of the downtown—and you’ve got a timetested recipe that (unlike the regifted fruitcake your family’s been passing around for a generation) remains a welcome touchstone of local life. The switch is flipped on November 28, the day after Thanksgiving—although what most Americans have resigned themselves to calling “Black Friday” is actually a keynote to the season of lights in downtown Red Bank. Once again, the SANTA EXPRESS will carry revelers between station stops Little Silver and Red Bank—where they’ll make the connection to HOLIDAY EXPRESS, the wall-of-sound jingle bell juggernaut fronted by restaurateur, running entrepreneur and renaissance guy Tim McLoone. In their milestone 20th annual free concert, the band stakes out their own patch of downtown real estate for a cockle-warming open-air set that commences with the official TOWN LIGHTING ceremony at 7pm. Over on Bridge Avenue at The Galleria, you can have your PICTURE TAKEN WITH SANTA on weekends where the traditional ANGEL TREE gives you a joyful chance for giving to kids who might not have any Christmas presents without you. The music dances in the air throughout the holiday shopping interlude, as HOLIDAY HARMONIES—that cold-weather corollary to the summertime Street Life series—offers up a seasonal smorgasbord of holiday-themed sounds, both at strategic downtown locations and on the stroll. It all happens Saturdays from November 29 through December 27, between the hours of noon and 3pm.

Count Basie Theatre countbasietheatre.org

MICHAEL McDONALD: This Christmas, an Evening of Holiday and Hits November 29, 8pm The original velvety eggnog voice of the Doobie Brothers with his trademark voice of velvety eggnog, the silverbeard singer and keyboardist offers up a fireside set of chestnuts from his long career, seasoned with his own smoothly soulful take on some time-tested favorites. A HOLIDAY DOO WOP December 6, 7:30pm From the street corner lamppost to the North Pole, a collection of veteran vocal soul acts present a program of signature hits and seasonal standards from the jingle bell jukebox. Featured are

The Duprees, Eugene Pitt and The Jive 5, Jimmy Gallagher and The Passions, The Original Chantels, The Harptones, Dennis Dorrity Jr and his All-Stars, plus special guests Herb Reed's Platters. MONMOUTH CIVIC CHORUS MESSIAH AND MORE December 7, 4pm Ring in the old, with this holiday season event of which it’s been said that “it won’t be Christmas without it”—and ring in the new, as Dr. Ryan Brandau and the MCC celebrate the release of their CD with a program featuring the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah, and other holiday favorites. SINATRA BIRTHDAY BASH December 12, 8pm Among many other things, Ol’ Blue Eyes left us with some fine Christmas records—and in the 8th

Annual salute to the Chairman’s great musical legacy, Red Bank’s own Jazz Arts Project will highlight some seasonal Sinatra in between the many Frank favorites. Joe Muccioli conducts the 18piece Red Bank Jazz Orchestra, with an all-new cast of guest vocalists. Company of Dance Arts: THE NUTCRACKER December 13-14,1pm & 5pm A genuine family favorite comes back to the Basie for the 29th consecutive year. Retelling the story of Clara and her journey through the Kingdom of Sweets, this eagerly anticipated signifier of seasonal life sets Tchaikovsky’s majestic score to a fully staged production that mixes soloists from NYC dance companies with the young dancers of Red Bank’s CODA.

VIENNA BOYS CHOIR December 15, 7:30pm The 2014 touring edition of the venerable vocal institution—an organization that traces its lineage back to the imperial courts of the late 15th century—arrives in Red Bank for a concert that mixes carols of Christmas with traditional Viennese waltzes and lieder, as well as “everything from medieval to contemporary and experimental music.” Junie B. in JINGLE BELLS, BATMAN SMELLS December 16, 3pm The characters young-reader book series by Barbara Park is adapted by Allison Gregory into a family-friendly stage show, in which sassy first- grader Junie B. Jones and her classmates embark on a hilarious adventure that packs a message about the joy of giving. A JOHN WATERS CHRISTMAS December 16, 8pm Let’s hear it for the Humbugs, as the Basie throws a bone to the candycane-intolerant among us. “Putting the X in Xmas”—and coming off a stint as the author of the best-selling Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America—the legendary cult film director (Pink Flamingos, Cry Baby, the original Hairspray), raconteur and Bad Tastemaker “rides into town on his sleigh full of smut” with a one-man show that revolves around his own very real love of Christmas—his compulsive desire to give and receive perverted gifts, a religious fanaticism for Santa Claus, and an unhealthy love of true crime holiday horror stories. Nebraska Theatre Caravan’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL December 17, 7:30pm Boasting a large cast, full orchestra, detailed costumes and set—plus celebrated “ghostly special effects”—this nationally touring professional production (adaptation by Charles Jones) returns to Red Bank with a retelling of the Dickens classic that’s enhanced by such period hymns and songs of the season as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Here We Come AWassailing” and “Away in a Manger.” 12

HOLIDAY EXPRESS BENEFIT CONCERT December 18, 7:30pm While the core of the Holiday Express mission are their dozens of free performances for what Tim McLoone describes as “the adult orphans” among us—people living with AIDS, the mentally ill, disadvantaged families, the isolated elderly and the desperately homeless—a highlight of their seasonal schedule remains the annual fundraiser show on the Basie stage; with a full complement of more than 70 musicians and singers delivering a set that ranges from the reverent (“Silent Night”) to the heartwarming (“White Christmas”), to the pure fun of “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Run, Run Rudolph.” SANTA FOR...STARRING BRIAN KIRK & THE JIRKS with Special Guest Concert December 20, 8pm In what’s quickly becoming an annual Jersey Shore holiday tradition, the third installment of Santa For...returns to the Basie for a night "of awesome music and offensive jokes" (as Brian Kirk puts it). Designed to raise funds and awareness for a special beneficiary, this three-hour jingle ball show boasts the comedic antics of Brian Kirk and the musical talent of the Jirks together with national acts. A SOULED-OUT CHRISTMAS featuring DARLENE LOVE and FELIX CAVALIERE December 21, 7pm A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame—and a keeper of the Christmas Album flame, ever since Phil Spector went Bad Santa—Miss Darlene Love brings the signature songs like “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and “Winter Wonderland” to a fundraiser (produced by Sammy Boyd) for the Little Kids Rock Foundation—with fellow 60s hit makers Felix Cavaliere and His Rascals giving “Good Lovin’.” HOPE CONCERT VII featuring BOBBY BANDIERA and Friends December 21, 7pm The Bon Jovi guitarist, local music legend and impresario of the Jersey Shore Rock ‘N Soul Revue returns to the Basie with an all-new edition of his big holiday

fundraiser—a must-see event that’s historically attracted the guest talents of The Boss, JBJ, Southside Johnny and many more. It’s a benefit for the Horizons student enrichment program, as well as the Count Basie Theatre’s Arts Education and Outreach Programs.

First Presbyterian Church of Red Bank towerhillchurch.org

TOWER HILL CHOIR: A Concert for Christmas December 20, 7pm One of Red Bank’s most treasured venues for music welcomes the public to a Concert Series performance by the 50-voice Tower Hill Choir. The chorale under the direction of Matthew Van Dyke presents a program highlighted by Vivaldi’s Gloria and traditional Christmas carols, with chamber orchestra and harp—and in a scenic hilltop setting that’s that much nearer to heaven.

Monmouth Conservatory of Music

monmouthconservatory.org BAROQUE CONCERT December 20, 4pm One of the borough’s best kept secrets continues its monthly series of quality classical musical recitals in the heart of downtown Red Bank, as the auditorium space at the MCM’s White Street facility presents a faculty program of chamber selections, to take the edge off the pressures of the shopping countdown.

Two River Theater trtc.org

THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR and Other Eric Carle Favorites December 19-22 For their annual holiday-season family show, TRTC hosts Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia for a single weekend of performances, adapted from some of the best-loved and most colorful stories by children’s author Carle.

CLEVELAND CANNON and GLEN GOLDBAUM

Two Unlikely Oracles of Red Bank’s Booming Westside

Cleveland Cannon in his shop

hen stylist Glen Goldbaum picked Red Bank to move his talents from Manhattan to Monmouth County six years ago and open his own salon, Bridge Avenue by the train station was the place he picked. Cleveland Cannon’s tiny Tailor Shop was a big reason: it was the real deal. It promised the kind of place Glen was looking for—the eclectic Brooklyn–West Village– SoHo kind with an urban-cool texture that mixed neighborhood shops, creative possibility and the feeling of community that he wanted. In outward appearance, their places of business couldn’t look less alike. Cleveland’s shop at 88 Bridge Avenue is not much bigger than a closet that hasn’t been emptied in years. There’s barely an inch of cleared floor to stand on in the 300 square foot space. It’s been that way since Cleveland moved in twelve years ago after trying other locations in Red Bank. (His first place was on the corner of Reckless and Broad Streets in 1986.) Here, on Bridge Avenue, piles of clothing, fabrics, cleaning fluids, spools of thread and whoknows-what are everywhere with Cleveland stationed at an industrial-strength sewing machine. Glen Goldbaum

and associate The cluttered space would be claustrophobic if it in his salon weren’t for Cleveland’s wide-open personality. His welcome mat is always out, but he never stops working. He’s open seven days a week. Cleveland says, “I’m just a hungry tailor.” He works by himself, a one-man operation, but he’s not alone, with people happy to squeeze in for fittings or to pick up orders or just past the time. Life goes on in this shop, but work never stops: repairs, alterations, custom designs, leather repairs, hems while you wait...anything that requires the expert skills of the master tailor always on premises.

Glen’s salon is like a movie set, constantly alive and in motion...clients (hundreds of new ones arriving every month)...hair stylists and beauty professionals (25+ staff and counting)...changing backdrops (trunk shows, art exhibits, punk bands on party nights)...designer sets (beautiful or edgy or provocative eye candy everywhere)...and plenty of open space for the action to take place. Glen is at the center, directing it all. The 2500 square feet of his professional universe includes 72 Bridge—the original Glen Goldbaum 72 space—expanded to incorporate Glen Goldbaum’s Lambs & Wolves Den of Beauty a few doors down. The footprint has more than doubled since he opened—as much to keep up with his creative imagination as his rapidly growing customer base. And customers are something these two entrepreneurs have in common, and lots of them. Thousands of people have found their way to Bridge Avenue, thanks to Glen and Cleveland who have influenced the current boom on Red Bank’s Westside just by being there. “It’s up-start urban here. There’s opportunity, freshness, inclusiveness: ...that’s what people connect to,” says Glen. What he saw as a possibility six years ago is being realized, as new residential and commercial interests move in. “The wrong side of the tracks is right for us” is how Glen describes his choice of location and now the times are catching up with his thinking. A few doors away, Cleveland Cannon might feel the same way, but he’s too busy working to think about it.

ROGER MUMFORD The build-it-and-they-will-come approach to new construction doesn’t work well with many of today’s iPhone-toting, eco-conscious, quality driven, and

FOREFRONT HOMES

luxury oriented home seekers. But they will come if you build it just right. “There’ve been several paradigm shifts in terms of consumer preferences,” says veteran builder Roger Mumford. In 1987, he co-founded The Matzel and Mumford Organization, which he sold to K. Hovnanian Homes in 1999, and who today heads Forefront Homes. “People want to experience a living environment that is more consistent with the age we live in than that provided by older homes, dwellings that are acceptable but not especially desirable,” he notes. Another preference shift regards ownership: while people want access to luxury and quality, not all of them necessarily want to own it. They want options, flexibility and variety in new construction that is innovative, practical, and that speaks directly to them. This, Roger maintains, is what Forefront Homes is all about. According to Roger, Forefront and its various affiliates were created to offer “more boutique types of real estate products.” Highly diversified, the company builds rental communities and custom houses both on individual lots and in subdivisions in Monmouth County, as well as locations in New York State. In 2015 Forefront will open in Ocean County what’s likely the state’s first non-age-restricted, single-family, all-lease community. Since 2009, the firm has been headquartered on the West Side of Red Bank on Bridge Avenue—home, also, to a special design gallery for clients, and the street itself to a block of Forefront-built houses at the intersection of James Parker Blvd. Forefront’s commitment to Red Bank doesn’t end there. Leasing will begin in February at Station Place: 45 designer-inspired apartment homes near the Count Basie Theatre on Monmouth Street. “We recognized a significant shortage of upscale rental housing in Red Bank,” says Roger. “It’s a town that has so much to offer and an untapped market for people who would love to live there, but can’t find a suitable place.” Station Place’s upscale amenities include everything from nine-foot ceilings, mocha kitchen cabinets, quartz countertops, and premium elevators to onsite parking, high speed Verizon internet, and extreme sound insulation. Like all Forefront properties, there’s a premium placed on being “green.” This means meeting three vital criteria: energy efficiency, conserving resources during construction, and indoor air quality. “One of the things in the industry I think I’ve been known for is being innovative, and that’s kind of what makes me tick,” says Roger, who lives in Little Silver. “I really enjoy the creative aspect”— something new homeowners at Station Place, and other Forefront properties, will appreciate as well.

SECTION RED BANK

Strings Attached By GK STRITCH and WAYNE WOOLLEY

KEEP THE

MUSIC ALIVE!

N

early a decade ago, an anonymous donor provided the money that allowed the Red Bank Public Schools to purchase 100 string instruments—violins, cellos, violas and upright bases—to start a Strings Program for kindergarten through eighth grade students at Red Bank Primary School and Red Bank Middle School.

The small school district with a high-poverty student body created an orchestra that went on to compete in local and regional competitions. Now budget cuts have eliminated funding for the Strings Program. Without money, the music will stop.

BASSIST ESPERANZA SPALDING You can grow up with literally nothing and you don’t suffer if you know you’re loved and valued.

T

he Red Bank Strings Program has been enriching the lives and futures of young children for more than a decade. When funding was cut from the school budget for this year, some 100 young children were immediately affected. Parents, members of the community, and the Red Bank Borough Education Foundation—a nonprofit organization with the mission to raise funds for programs in the school district— took up the rallying cry: KEEP THE MUSIC ALIVE! Foundation president, Susan Berke—a long-time local Red Bank resident with no children in the district, but a committed advocate for child welfare everywhere—says, “The cost to fully reinstate the program would be about $85,000 to pay a full time teacher and maintain the instruments, but our immediate goal is to raise a more modest $10,000 for an after-school or before-school program.”

Wayne Woolley, a parent whose two children were students studying violin in the program, made a five-minute video (view at rbbef.org/hot-news-1) to help raise funds that features interviews with the young musicians who speak to the heart of the matter. LILLY COSTA, 2nd grade strings student I think violin is part of school that makes the year special and people get to learn about music. JOSHUA GRAY, 4th grade string student Strings is important to me because I think it’s a way of learning for everybody and music is sort of a language for everybody.

RH6_14_PGS14-27:Layout 1 11/9/14 4:23 PM Page 25

Outdoor concert performances in Red Bank by Strings students as part of the Count Basie 365 Cultural Series (photographs by Wayne Woolley).

CELLIST YO-YO MA I think one of the great things about being a musician is that you never stop learning.

In the video, Wayne’s daughter LILLIAN WOOLLEY, a Middle School student, describes the program: Our Strings Program begins at our primary school. That’s where students from kindergarten to 3rd grade would learn how to play either the violin, the cello or viola. In first grade, they would start to learn how to read music. Students who practiced hard and make fast progress get lots of encouragement to keep improving. When kids go into 4th grade in Red Bank, they go into the Middle School. String lessons continue there. By the time kids get into 8th grade, they’re usually pretty good.

A big part of the program is learning how to perform. Both the Primary School and the Middle School do at least two concerts a year. Many of the RB public school students go on to the nationally recognized Academy of Visual and Performing Arts at Red Bank Regional High School. Even though the high school draws from several communities, including Little Silver and Shrewsbury, Red Bank kids make up the majority of the string students at the high school. Red Bank Councilman Ed Zipprich, vice-president of the Education Foundation, reports that School Superintendent Jared Rumage is “a very supportive and positive force” in reinstating the program. “But, we need money right now,” he says, “ to keep the music alive.”

on White Street, but Denise Zappoli—who still owns and runs the same shop she started with her husband, Paul—doesn’t think so. “We’ve never been the place for the three-minuteattention-span toys,“ she says with the knowing smile of a mother, grandmother, and card-carrying Santa’s helper.

Board games, dolls, dress-ups, trucks, building sets, puzzles...there are literally thousands of play things for young children, infants to pre-teens, that fill the shelves and countertops of this cozy little toy store. Brands like Playmobil®, Lego® (“always in the top three every year”), Calico Critters®, Madame Alexander®, and Magna Tiles® are staples, with lasting play-power, that never go out of style. “This is a neighborhood store, a family-run business,“ says Denise. “My customers tell me what they want, and I listen.” The personal service is really personal, and a very different experience than big-box or on-line shopping. To browse the treasure-filled aisles of ToyMasters feels like a gift to the shopper—a place to stop hurrying, step out of the hustle-andbustle, and remember what toy land is all about.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS

ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS

Santa: SANTA RUNS The spirit of St. Nick lives in Atlantic Highlands every Christmas when the magical SANTA RUNS comes to town—the jolly old tradition of the Atlantic Highlands First Aid Squad that brings holiday cheer and big smiles to every neighborhood in town. This year, the SANTA RUNS kicks off December 6 at the holiday tree lighting in front of Borough Hall on First Avenue where Santa arrives in his sleigh pulled by one of the three First Aid Squad ambulances. Then, for four nights—Monday, December 8 thru Thursday December 11 from 6pm to 9:00pm—Santa visits every street in Atlantic Highlands, block by block, stopping to hear Christmas list wishes and give out candy canes to waiting children. The route map gets posted on the squad’s website (ahfirstaid.org) before the event.

First Aid squad members and cadets—students, ages 14 to 18, who are in training for the squad—are at the ready and on the alert. A steady stream of up-dates on Santa’s progress and ETA goes out through Twitter (twitter@ahfirstaid) and Facebook (facebook.com/ahfirstaid) from a helper in the lead ambulance to make sure no one will be missed when the sleigh arrives with lights and garlands and music playing. Parents are encouraged to keep in touch and give advance notice of any special situation where Santa needs to stop the sled and make a house call to a child who can’t come out to greet him. Borough Council Member Lou Fligor is a red-suited helper who remembers the SANTA RUNS from when he was a kid growing up in Atlantic Highlands. “It’s been a wonderful part of my Christmas for as long as I can remember,” he says. “And still is!” All along the SANTA RUNS route, folks bring out canned goods and gift cards and enough items to fill a whole ambulance that gets driven over to the Atlantic Highlands Food Pantry at the United Methodist Church.. The Atlantic Highlands First Aid Squad—formed in 1929—provides free, around-the-clock emergency medical services and rescue operations through its all-volunteer organization that operates on generous donations from the community and the borough. The squad answers more than 600 calls each year for everything from skinned knees and minor emergencies to car crashes and serious injuries. “This is our chance to reach out to our community without people being sick or in an accident,“ says Richard Huff, a long-time First Aid Square member. “It’s our way to give back and say thank you.” 34

YOU’VE GOT by ALICE LOFFREDO

I

’m always struck by how each branch of the occult practices provides its own helpful perspective for us to use as we try to create the best, most meaningful lifetime for ourselves. I’ve dabbled a bit in numerology, and thought that you might enjoy a glimpse into how it can give you insight into the themes that 2015 is likely to hold for you. According to numerology, the numbers 1 through 9 describe particular stages in the evolutionary life cycle. In 2015, each of us is at one of these steps in the cycle, which is called your Personal Year Number. Figuring it out is pretty simple: Add up the individual digits for your MONTH of Birth + DAY of Birth + CURRENT YEAR (2015)

Example: Birth Date September 23: 9 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 0 + 1 + 5 = 22 If the result is a double digit, reduce it to a single digit: 2+2=4

Result: 2015 is a 4 year for a person born on September 23 in any year.

BEGINNINGS. An active year. You plant seeds for new undertakings. Let go of the obsolete to make way for the new. Focus on yourself. You’re laying foundations for a whole new cycle.

PROGRESS AND GROWTH. Initiatives started in the #1 year grow, but the pace slows. Cooperation, feedback from others and patience make for advancement. Don’t force things.

SELF-EXPRESSION. Use imagination, inspiration and creativity to develop new ideas and expand old ones. Enjoy yourself. Speak your truth. Travel. This can be a year of big advances in many ways.

PRODUCTIVITY. Work carefully, practically, and efficiently to put ideas and plans into solid form. Perseverance pays off. Finances can improve. You’re building security and strong foundations.

CHANGE. NEW FREEDOM. Be prepared for surprises and change. Shed anything that has outlived its usefulness. Make space to stretch your wings. Follow your curiosity. Take some calculated risks.

RESPONSIBILITY. EFFORT. SERVICE. Helping others, nurturing those you care about, and attending to family responsibilities are likely themes. Balance personal and work life, and your own needs with those of others.

TURNING INWARD. SPIRITUALITY. A year for introspection and exploring life’s deeper meanings. You are growing spiritually and acquiring self-understanding and wisdom. Listen to your inner voice. Get enough rest. Eat wisely. Restore balance to your body, mind and spirit.

ACHIEVEMENT. RECOGNITION. A busy year of “taking care of business.” You take charge, act with authority, and make things happen. Use good judgment. Pay and collect debts. Money could come from unexpected sources. Great progress can be made.

Wishing you a Personal Year that’s your Personal Best. astrologykarmaandyou.com

COMPLETION. ENVISIONING THE FUTURE. Seeds planted in year # 1 bear fruit. Let go of the outworn and unwanted as this cycle ends and another begins. Wait until next year, a #1 year, to start anything new. What do you want the next nine-year cycle to contain? 37

here are houses with character and contours that inspire the imagination like great works of art. The elegant Shore Colonial at 31 Shrewsbury Drive is one of them where every detail speaks of the grand and glorious lifestyle enjoyed by anyone who lives here.

31 SHREWSBURY DR. | RUMSON

Set on almost two acres of private waterfront property with expansive frontage on Rumson’s exclusive Oyster Bay and unobstructed views of the Shrewsbury River, the estate takes full advantage of its serene setting and waterfront location. Multiple waterside porches, a deep-water dock with Riparian Grant, and an in-ground pool with patio and cabana enhance the experience of coming home to a luxurious resort for rest and relaxation. The mansion makes a stately, yet inviting, presence as you drive up past the gate-house at the front entrance—newly remodeled to serve as a guest house or approved legal rental. Once inside, the outside comes to greet you through floor-to-ceiling glassed French doors and windows letting in natural light and panoramic vistas from every room. 7000 square feet of gracious living space includes a towering two-story entrance foyer with spiral staircase, a new kitchen by Town & Country, five bedrooms with a balconied master suite overlooking the river, and a great room on the third floor. There are parlors, porches and decks for lounging, fireplaces, and a formal dining room. Despite its grand scale and stately presence, the open floor plan and interior flow of this masterpiece are designed to give the same inviting sense of informality and ease as its airy waterside setting... or a great en plein air work of art.

ccording to the American Heart Association, diseases caused by smoking kills more than 440,000 people in the United States each year. One out of five deaths in America is related to smoking. Smokers not only have increased risk for lung disease, including lung cancer and emphysema, but also have increased risk for heart disease, stroke and oral cancer. Almost one-third of all cancers are related to smoking. Despite the many reasons to quit smoking, it is an incredibly difficult challenge. “Quitting smoking is both a mental and a physical undertaking,” says Ghulam Abbas, M.D., Medical Director of Thoracic Oncology and Director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery. “Mentally, you should be ready and relatively stress-free. You must commit to exercising daily and getting plenty of sleep.” A person trying to quit must overcome two obstacles: a physical addiction to nicotine and a habit. If you or someone you know has thought about quitting, now is the time. On Thursday, November 20th, join millions of fellow smokers in quitting for the Great American Smokeout. The American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November each year by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. Ghulam Abbas, M.D., MCHM, FACS By quitting, even for one day, you will be Medical Director of Thoracic Oncology taking an important step towards a healthier and Director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery, Meridian Cancer Care life—one that can lead to reducing cancer risk. There are many ways to quit. In some cases, smokers benefit from nicotine replacement products to help break their smoking habit. “Nicotine replacement products continue to give smokers nicotine to meet their nicotine craving. However, the benefit of nicotine replacement products is the elimination of tars and poisonous gases that cigarettes emit.” Whichever method you use, making the decision to quit smoking is the best action you can take for your health. I’m IMPORTANT I believe in the power of early detection. I lost my husband to colon cancer at a young age. So, while my health has always been important, it is even more important now. I am my children’s only parent and their biggest cheerleader. They also know that Mom is a strong advocate for preventative medicine. That is why I make it a priority to visit the Women’s Center at Riverview. The Center rivals any in New York or New Jersey. I feel incredibly lucky to have Dr. Won right here in our community. I continue to put my health in her hands because I believe she is the best. I am a parent. I am an advocate. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305. Or visit www.RiverviewMedicalCenter.com/WomensCenter

hen John Castiglione opened his first MacAttack in Montclair, New Jersey, he started with two important basics for his restaurant: make simple food great and make that food two familiar favorites—mac-&-cheese and grilled cheese—that people loved growing up. His second MacAttack Gourmet Cheesery opened on Broad Street in Red Bank with a menu designed for cheese lovers everywhere, developed in the MacAttack kitchen by his partner and award-winning chef, Abe Elkomey.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH

RED HOT

DAY TRIP For family-friendly year round fun, Point Pleasant Beach is a great destination. The expansive beach is kept crystal clean and the Boardwalk is great for kids (of any age) with dozens of rides along with games of chance, miniature golf, and Jenkinson’s Aquarium. All of the required indulgences are offered along the mile-long Boardwalk, including waffles and ice cream, sausage and peppers, popcorn, cotton candy, salt water taffy, and of course, seafood and plenty of it. There are numerous other dining opportunities, in the Boardwalk area from on-the-go to full service such as Strollo's Lighthouse, Red's Lobster Pot and Martell's Tiki Bar. Off the Boardwalk, there’s year-round entertainment and dining centered along Arnold Ave., with choices including Uncle Vinnie’s Comedy Club, Frankie's Bar & Grill, Joe Leones's Gastronomia, and don't forget 10th Ave. Burrito Company, which is opening a location on West Front Street in Red Bank in early 2015. And if it’s not beach weather, or season: Point Pleasant Beach is also a shopper's delight. Sea & Green is a green home boutique and local artist collaborative owned by Rebecca Biskaduros. She has a strong background in green building and sustainability, and her mission is to bring a mix of vintage finds and new items made of natural and/or recycled materials to her customers. After Hurricane Sandy, she made ornaments from salvaged boardwalk wood, and to date has given $22,000 to S.U.R.F. Don't forget to check out her beautiful hidden garden! Point Pleasant Antique Emporium owners, Glenn and Darlene Hart, and son Matt opened their "new" store in September 2013. In the antique world for 20 years, they were offered an opportunity to move their business into a completely refurbished building that had been home to another antique store for 30 years. It is light and bright, and with over 40 dealers you can find almost "everything under the sun." There is an extensive Sports Memorabilia collection, Art, Furniture, and many unique and different quality items. Whatever the season, a visit to Point Pleasant Beach is one enjoyable day!!
