GIVING TUESDAY at the Basie NOVEMBER 29 to benefit POAC Autism Services making lives better every day
by MARILYN CHAMBERLAIN
B
lack Friday and Cyber Monday get people shopping—but a new post-Thanksgiving weekday is opening hearts and purse strings.
“Giving Tuesday,” founded in 2012 by New York City’s 92nd St. YMCA and the United Nations Foundation, was originally a “response to commercialism and consumerism” during the holiday season. Today, it has since turned into an international day of giving. And this year, the nonprofit Count Basie Theatre will use the November 29th occasion as one to fund its sensory-friendly programming and raise money and awareness for POAC Autism Services of Brick.
“The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation is proud to be able to work with a great non-profit partner like the Count Basie Theatre,” said executive director and Basie board member Jeremy Grunin. “The ability to support POAC Autism Services in their mission coupled with further showing the power of the arts through the Basie was too powerful an endeavor to ignore.” The organizations will also use the day-long effort and radio broadcast to raise funds for POAC Autism Services of Brick. $2 from every ticket sold on November 29th will be donated to the group, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children and adults with autism achieve their fullest potential by providing quality education, support and recreation at no cost to participants. Earlier this year, the Basie team worked with POAC to train staff in advance of the theatre’s first-ever sensory-friendly mainstage performance.
“Reaching all audiences with the highest level of the performing arts is part of our not for profit mission,” said Adam Philipson CEO and President of the historic Count Basie Theatre. “We strive to be inclusive and create barrier-free experiences and these shows will support our guests and families with special needs including autism spectrum disorder.”
“POAC is so thrilled to be involved with Count Basie Theater’s sensory-friendly programming and their fundraising efforts on Giving Tuesday,” said Simone Tellini, Director of Program Development at POAC. “Children and adults on the autism (ASD) spectrum often have sensory issues that make it difficult to participate in and enjoy community-based activities, especially those involving the arts. These activities are essential, especially for children, and vital to their growth in so many ways.
“Giving Tuesday” at the Basie will kick-off at 6:00am, with a day-long broadcast from 94.3 The Point / WJLK-FM Radio. Listeners will be invited to drop by and give donations in person, or to make donations via theBASIE.org.
“Last February,” Tellini continued, “the Basie provided a wonderful show that, for many children, was their first experience with live theater. The management and staff went above and beyond to make everyone feel comfortable and accepted. We applaud the Count Basie’s commitment to our families and look forward to future events and programs.”
In addition, the Jersey Shore-based Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation, which uses philanthropy to increase citizen activity and economic development opportunities through the arts, healthcare and education, has generously agreed to match all donations up to $25,000.
“Giving Tuesday is such an important day for non-profit organizations,” Philipson concluded. “Our partnership with the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation and 94.3 FM will assure our success for these sensory-friendly programs and our support of POAC.”

One fish, two fish … beaded fish, tattooed fish! Apologies to Dr. Seuss, but the fish at Gallery Jupiter in Little Silver have his boring red and blue ones beat. In fact, a whole school of painted, embellished and bedazzled papier-mache fish are on display and ready to be auctioned off at the gallery on December 1 as part of an off-the-hook fundraiser event for the Sandy Hook-based American Littoral Society. Each of the 50-plus, three-dimensional fish sculptures has been decorated by different local artists, architects, designers, and community members. “We have gilded fish, Picasso-like abstract designs, one with colorful circle appliques, and a pair painted to look like swimmers, complete with his-and-hers swimsuits and goggles,” says Judi Trammell, owner of Gallery Jupiter. “Each artist has put their personality into their fish, and they’ve come up with some really unique creative expressions.” Judi says the idea is based on popular public art exhibits of painted cows and other sculptures, “but fish connect perfectly with our beautiful Jersey Shore and the great work of the American Littoral Society.” The nonprofit conservation group educates about, cares for and protects coastal marine life and habitats. To add to the festivities, Judi says Gallery Jupiter will have other sea-themed artworks on display throughout the auction event. Gallery Jupiter offers custom-framing, and curates and sells art (including from a variety of local artists), decorative elements and home accessories, and offers private in-home design consultation services. The fish fundraiser is Thursday, Dec 1 from 5-8pm. A BURNING QUESTION: HOLIDAY HEARTBURN OR GERD? Over the holidays, when people are often eating more rich foods, acid reflux (GERD) can rear its ugly head, even resulting in trips to the emergency room with people confusing the symptoms for a heart attack. There are innovative new ways to treat GERD that are minimally invasive and very impactful.
T
he holiday season is synonymous with friends, family, and food. Sometimes, however, good food can lead to heartburn. While occasional acid reflux is common, many people may be ignoring a more serious issue called Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.
by APRIL GUILLERME for Riverview Medical Center
GERD is a digestive disorder that affects the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach leading to frequent acid reflux. Over time, this acid can lead to many serious complications, including esophageal cancer. “More than eight million people in the United States suffer from GERD,” says Ghulam Abbas, M.D., medical director, Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery at Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital. Dr. Abbas is part of Meridian Cancer Care, also part of Hackensack Meridian Health. “Many people mask the symptoms with over-the-counter medications, but that doesn’t cure the problem. People who suffer from this disease need medical treatment, often surgery, to fix the faulty sphincter that allows the acid to travel back up the esophagus.” “Pain from heartburn can radiate into the jaw, neck, and throat, which can lead people to believe that they are experiencing a heart attack,” says Dr. Abbas. “That’s why it’s so important to seek medical attention to get properly diagnosed and treated. There are innovative new ways to treat GERD that are minimally invasive and very impactful.” One such treatment is called LINX, which consists of a ring of titanium magnets that fit around the Lower Esophageal Sphincter. Implanted through a minimally invasive outpatient procedure, LINX requires no alteration to the stomach, unlike other treatments, and acts as a barrier to contain stomach acid. Patients who undergo this procedure are typically discharged two hours after and can immediately begin a regular diet, with 90 percent no longer needing to take medication to control the reflux. Ghulam Abbas, M.D., medical director, Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital
“The goal is not to immediately jump to a surgical fix or treatment such as LINX, but sometimes, it’s the only option,” says Dr. Abbas. “In many cases, GERD or infrequent heartburn can be lessened by reducing your intake of rich, spicy, or sweet foods, which I know is not always easy during the holidays.”

To help combat heartburn during the holidays, Dr. Abbas recommends avoiding overindulgences in foods such chocolate, fried foods, fatty meats, rich foods such as sauces, and beverages such as soda and alcohol. “It’s important to be mindful of how often you are getting heartburn,” says Dr. Abbas. “If it only occurs occasionally after too much of a certain type of food, an over the counter treatment is acceptable. If, however, you are noticing the symptoms after nearly every meal, it’s time to seek medical attention to get a proper diagnosis.”
To learn more about the LINX clinical trial, and to determine if you are a candidate for a clinical trial, call the office of Clinical Research located at Jersey Shore University Medical Center at 732.776.3198.

La Grande Pomme By LISA READIE MAYER
Le Prince: The Le Prince family tradition of farming goes back three generations of growing quality fruits in Vallières in the heart of Haute-Savoie, in the French Alps. Locally grown apples, pears, cherries, raspberries, quinces, and strawberries are transformed into pure juices, preserves, purees, and compotes. The company’s headquarters is located in Vallieres, France. Savoie Condi Fruits, its unit for maritime exports, is located in Albertville, France. Coop de Val Fruit in Cercier, France is a partner specializing in organic apples and pears. In addition to growing apples, pears, cherries, raspberries, and other fruits, the company produces artisanal, organic juices, preserves, fruit compotes, coulis, and other products under the Thomas Le Prince brand. The all-natural, organic, GMO-free preserves—in flavors that include raspberry, cherry, wild blueberry, strawberry, strawberry-rhubarb, black currant, apple-caramel, and more—are handmade in small batches in heirloom copper cauldrons with fruit from the Le Prince family orchards. All products are made using simple recipes, with all-natural, highquality ingredients, according to family tradition.

(Pause) Enter: A Plan
Carey Taylor, who grew up in New Jersey with family in Holmdel, West Allenhurst and Brick, was living in New York City as a digital marketing, and communications sales executive for creative companies with clients in media, advertising, fashion, finance and luxury. It was her dream life. Days and nights were filled with creative collaborations, designer runway shows, speaking engagements, business trips, museums, cultural events, charity work, meeting friends, weekends at the beach…(see her blog at nycarey.com)
So she thought, “If we could export Thomas Le Prince products to the States, I could go home more often!!” she says. The idea worked.
(Pause) Enter: Marc Le Prince Marc is from Saint Eusèbe, a small village near Annecy, the capital of the Haute Savoie region of eastern France that borders Switzerland and Italy. The area has spectacular views of the French Alps and scenic Lake Annecy. Its population is just over 1,000, or, roughly, the number of inhabitants on a Carey Taylor-Le Prince & New York City block. Marc Marc Le Prince today, and handles marketing, sales and (below) on their wedding day in the French Alps exports for his family’s thirdgeneration fruit farm in France and came to New York City on a vacation. One night, not very long ago, he walked into a pub in Greenwich Village and met Carey Taylor.
(Pause) Enter: Love Today, Carey Taylor-Le Prince’s story reads like a romance novel. She fell in love with the handsome Frenchman with an apple orchard high in the mountains far far away. After a long-distance courtship, she packed up her adopted shelter dog, Layla Belle, traded her Louboutins for hiking boots, and headed off to marry her modern-day fruit farmer in a ceremony in the old village church, against the backdrop of the French Alps. “I was transplanted from the Big Apple to the apple orchards of France,” she laughs. She moved to France and loved it all, but missed the life she’d left with her family and friends and Manhattan. “…and I missed New Jersey! I missed the music scene at the Shore and the beaches. I missed shopping at all the great boutiques in Red Bank. I missed Thanksgiving. When I can get a turkey, my French oven is not big enough to cook it!”
Carey had already brought her professional skill set to the Le Prince family business. She had worked on a brand update, helping to refresh the website, and creating a social media presence. She developed partnerships with French agriculture groups and the region’s tourism bureau, which has helped attract visitors to the Thomas Le Prince headquarters for tours, tastings, and culinary education programs. Why not New Jersey next? Skip ahead over emails and phone calls and connecting flights to meetings with the Saker Shop Rite organization, a familyowned business just like the Le Prince’s familyowned business, that began with a small mom-and-pop store opened in 1916 in Freehold, New Jersey and, now owns and operates 29 supermarkets across the state.
(Pause) Enter: Happy Ending Today, with time for holiday shopping, you can walk into Saker-owned Dearborn Market in Holmdel and Shop Rite Supermarkets in the area and find Thomas Le Prince all-natural, organic preserves and sparkling juices made with fruit from Marc’s family farm. “The sparkling juices are refreshing as-is, or, even mixed to make a cocktail with a splash of vodka or gin,” says Carey. And the preserves? “The fruit flavors are delicious schmeared on a New York-style bagel,” reports Carey with a big smile. dearbornmarket.com shoprite.com

hen restaurant veteran Louis Andrianos took over longtime beloved Red Bank restaurant Gaetano’s this summer, he set out to make a good thing even better. He revamped and rejuvenated the authentic Italian menu, keeping customer favorites like Lamb Osso Bucco, Calamari Calabrese, Italian Eggrolls, and Grilled Pork Chops with sweet and hot cherry peppers. But, he also added classics like Chicken Parmigiana and Eggplant Parmigiana, as well as awesome new appetizers, housemade pasta dishes, and entrees that emphasize lighter fare, fresh flavors, and farm-to-table ingredients. Gaetano’s is becoming the new go-to for lunch with affordably priced salads, burgers, sandwiches on homemade focaccia and ciabatta breads, and an even greater selection of their famous crispy-crust brick-oven pizzas (try the 10 Wallace with goat cheese, mushrooms and caramelized onions!). Also new: Brunch, served daily from 11 am, with a delicious menu of omelets, egg sandwiches, avocado toast, and fruit-topped French toast, pancakes, and waffles. Out late? You can even swing by Gaetano’s to get a sweet treat from the espresso bar and dessert counter.
“Gaetano’s has always been popular for dinner, but now we’re becoming a great gathering spot for brunch, business lunches, meetings, and even dessert-and-coffee after a show,” says Louis. “And, many of our customers come back to celebrate their special events with us, like engagement parties, showers, rehearsal dinners, and holiday parties in our renovated party space. Our customers have become like friends.”

“MAKE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON SIZZLE”
AT THE NEW CALIENTE CANTINA
You hear it first: that unmistakable sizzle of food on white-hot cast iron. Next, you catch a waft of savory, spicy, smokiness balanced by the fresh bite of cilantro and lime, before you see the colorful tangle of meat, vegetables and other deliciousness as the waiter walks by with the tray. You know what you’re ordering: A Sizzling Skillet, one of the signature dishes at Caliente Cantina. Red Bank’s newest restaurant makes Mexicali magic, serving-up fresh, from-scratch fare with the best river view in town. Caliente Cantina offers a wide variety of Skillets – steak, chicken, shrimp, portabella, and rotating specials – for lunch and dinner. There’s even Breakfast Skillets with eggs, chorizo, potatoes and veggies, to go with the Make-Your-Own Bloody Mary Bar, with choice of spirits, rim-salts, and dozens of creative garnishes, for brunch served weekends. Now that sizzles!
