Celebrating International Women’s Day, Mother’s Day and Beyond
The beautiful alignment of International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day offers a profound opportunity to celebrate the multifaceted contributions of women in the same month. As an Associate Editor, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the remarkable strength and nurturing spirit of these women, qualities that were showcased at last year’s Woman of the Year Awards 2024, brought to you by this very magazine, Woman This Month

We celebrated women who are nurturing innovation, fostering strong communities and inspiring the next generation. These women, in their diverse roles, epitomised resilience, compassion and unwavering dedication.
Last year’s award ceremony highlighted the diverse ways women contribute to society. The stories shared at the awards ceremony resonated deeply, reminding us of the collective power of women in Bahrain. The event underscored the importance of mentorship, support and collaboration in empowering women to reach their full potential. It highlighted the crucial role women play in shaping the future of our nation and the globe.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day, let us recognise the extraordinary contributions of women in Bahrain and beyond. Let us acknowledge their strength, their nurturing spirit and their unwavering commitment to making a positive impact.

“I want to create a ripple effect, where artists feel empowered to take risks and push their creative boundaries.”
- Seema Haqiqi
Encaustic art, also known as hot wax painting, is an ancient art form with a textured beauty. “I was drawn to this medium because of its rich history and the boundless creative possibilities it offers,” Seema explains. “The vibrancy, texture and depth of encaustic art presented an exciting challenge, compelling me to push artistic boundaries within Bahrain.”
Overcoming Hurdles
Introducing such a rare medium came with its challenges. “It was daunting at first, but I believed in its potential to inspire,” she reflects. Her belief in encaustic art’s ability to captivate audiences kept her motivated, fostering appreciation for its complexity and beauty over time.
Bahrain’s climate posed technical obstacles that spurred Seema’s innovation. Traditional encaustic art relies on beeswax, vulnerable to melting in high temperatures. “I developed a special recipe by blending paraffin wax with other materials to
Bahrain’s first encaustic artist, Seema Haqiqi, blends ancient techniques with modern innovation. She opens up about her ambitions for her pioneering work, hoping to inspire new artistic horizons in the region.
create a more durable medium,” she shares. “This adaptation ensured my artworks withstood the Gulf’s intense heat and humidity, preserving their integrity through meticulous experimentation.”
Inaugural Exhibition
Seema’s Journey of Wax & Flames collection is deeply rooted in Bahrain’s cultural heritage and natural landscape. “The vibrant colours and fluidity of the sea inspire many of my pieces,” she says, capturing the movement and depth of water through molten wax. Islamic patterns symbolising harmony and continuity intertwine with textures that add layers of meaning, while Arabic calligraphy subtly weaves tradition into contemporary expression.
Hosting Bahrain’s first encaustic exhibition marks a significant milestone. “I hope this inspires emerging artists to explore new mediums and think outside the box,” Seema states. With a goal to challenge perceptions of contemporary art in
the region, she asserts: “I want to create a ripple effect, where artists feel empowered to take risks and push their creative boundaries.”
Reflecting on the exhibition, Seema recalls conversations that moved her deeply. “One young Bahraini artist told me she felt inspired to explore unconventional materials. Moments like these remind me why I started this journey,” she says. Feedback also encouraged her to consider more interactive and large-scale projects, expanding the reach of encaustic art.
With the exhibition now closed, Seema looks ahead. “I’m considering a new collection inspired by the Gulf region’s shared cultural heritage,” she reveals, with aspirations for international showcases. Ultimately, she envisions Bahrain as a hub for encaustic art in the Middle East, fostering awareness and appreciation for this ancient yet timeless medium.
M thers, Celebrating Cherishing
Whether it is through their gentle encouragement, tireless sacrifices or quiet strength in the face of challenges, mothers shape who we are and stand as the backbone of our families. This Mother’s Day, on March 21, we take a moment to honour and celebrate these incredible women who give so much of themselves for the happiness and success of their children.
Motherhood is more than just a title; it is a lifelong commitment to nurturing, teaching and protecting. The influence of a mother extends far beyond childhood, shaping our character, values and outlook on life. Her wisdom becomes our inner voice, guiding us through life’s toughest decisions. Her warmth offers comfort in moments of doubt and her resilience teaches us the strength we need to face the world.
There are few roles in life as profound and irreplaceable as that of a mother. From the moment we take our first breath, our mothers are there, offering love, guidance and unwavering support.
In every culture, the role of a mother is revered and rightly so. Across generations, mothers have carried traditions forward, instilling a sense of belonging and heritage in their children. Their sacrifices often go unnoticed, yet they ask for nothing in return. Whether it is a mother working long hours to provide for her family, a stay-athome mum dedicating every moment to her children’s growth or a grandmother continuing to offer wisdom and care, the essence of motherhood remains unchanged – pure, selfless love.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, it is important to take the time to truly appreciate the women who have given us so much. While flowers and gifts are wonderful gestures, the most meaningful gift is gratitude.
A heartfelt conversation, a simple ‘thank you’ or spending quality time together can mean the world to a mother.
This special day is also an opportunity to acknowledge the different forms of motherhood, women who have taken on the role of mothers in unconventional ways, whether as guardians, mentors or mother figures who have stepped in with love and care. Every act of nurturing and kindness deserves recognition.
Let this Mother’s Day be a reminder of the immeasurable impact mothers have on our lives. Their love is a force unlike any other, one that deserves to be celebrated, cherished and honoured not just today, but every day.

Thoughtful Gifts
A Personalised Photo Book
Nothing tugs at the heartstrings quite like memories. Gather your favourite photos – family holidays, cute selfies and candid snaps and create a beautiful photo book. Add quirky captions and little notes to make it even more special. It’s like a walk down memory lane, but with prettier packaging.
A Spa Day at Home
Who says you need to book an expensive spa appointment? Create a spa experience right at home. Think scented candles, luxurious bath bombs, fluffy towels and a soothing playlist. Throw in a fancy face mask and some herbal tea and you’ve got the ultimate relaxation kit. Bonus points if you offer to be her personal spa attendant for the day.
Mother’s Day is just around the corner and it’s the perfect opportunity to show your mum just how much she means to you. Woman This Month has rounded up some fun and thoughtful ideas that will make her smile, laugh and maybe even shed a happy tear.
A Subscription Box
Subscription boxes are the gifts that keep on giving. Whether your mum loves gourmet snacks, books, gardening goodies or artisanal teas, there’s a box for that. Every month she’ll get a delightful surprise and every time it arrives she’ll think of you.
A Cooking Class (with a Twist)
If your mum enjoys cooking (or even if she just enjoys eating), sign up for an online cooking class together. Choose a cuisine she’s never tried before – Thai, Italian, maybe even a pastry masterclass. It’s a fun way to bond, plus you get to eat the results. Win-win.
A Handwritten Letter
In the age of texts and emojis, a heartfelt handwritten letter is pure gold. Tell her what you
admire about her, share your favourite memories and let her know how much she means to you. It costs nothing but will be treasured forever.
A Plant with Personality
Flowers are lovely, but a plant lasts longer and grows with time, just like your love for Mum. Choose something easy to care for, like a succulent or a peace lily. You could even name the plant together, because why not?
A Day Off
Sometimes the best gift is simply a break. Take over her chores for the day. Make her breakfast in bed, do the dishes, handle the laundry and let her relax while you manage the household. It might not come wrapped in a bow, but it’s guaranteed to be appreciated.
BAHRAINI
Every year on March 8, the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day, a global movement recognising the achievements of women across all fields while advocating for gender equality.
It is a day to reflect on the progress made, acknowledge the challenges that remain and honour the trailblazers who have paved the way for a more inclusive society. Women have been at the forefront of social, economic and political advancements, breaking barriers and redefining their roles in society.
In Bahrain, the empowerment of women has been a key priority, with significant strides made in gender equality, thanks to the efforts of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa. As the President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), HRH Princess Sabeeka has dedicated her efforts to advancing women’s rights, enhancing their contributions to society and ensuring they have access to equal opportunities. Her vision has played a crucial role in shaping policies that support Bahraini women in education, the workforce and leadership.
A Global Movement for Gender Equality
International Women’s Day is more than just a celebration; it is a call to action for accelerating gender parity. The day is marked by events, discussions and initiatives that highlight the importance of women’s roles in all sectors, from politics and business to science and the arts. While significant progress has been made, challenges such as the gender pay gap, underrepresentation in leadership positions and barriers to education remain prevalent in many parts of the world.
The theme of International Women’s Day changes each year, focusing on different aspects of gender equality and women’s empowerment. It serves as a reminder that the fight for women’s rights is ongoing and that every step forward is a victory for future generations. Across the globe, governments, organisations and individuals use this occasion to reflect on the contributions of women and explore ways to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
Bahrain’s Commitment to Women’s Empowerment
Bahrain has long recognised the importance of empowering women, implementing policies and reforms to ensure their full participation in national development. The Kingdom has made remarkable progress in increasing female representation in government, business and education, demonstrating its commitment to gender equality.
A key figure in this progress is HRH Princess Sabeeka, whose leadership and advocacy have transformed the opportunities for Bahraini women. Through the Supreme Council for Women, she has championed initiatives that promote women’s rights, create economic opportunities and enhance social support systems. Her vision has helped shape a society where women are not only active participants but also leaders in their respective fields.
HRH Princess Sabeeka’s Contributions to Women’s Advancement
HRH Princess Sabeeka has played a vital role in establishing policies that promote gender balance and women’s inclusion in decisionmaking positions. One of her major achievements is the National Plan for the Advancement of Bahraini Women, a comprehensive strategy aimed at integrating women into all aspects of national development. This plan has led to legislative reforms ensuring equal opportunities in employment, education and entrepreneurship. Under her leadership, Bahrain has seen an increase in female participation in politics and government. Bahraini women have taken on ministerial roles, seats in parliament and leadership positions within the private sector. HRH Princess Sabeeka has been instrumental in pushing for policies that support working women, including family-friendly workplace initiatives, flexible work arrangements and enhanced maternity rights.
Economic empowerment has also been a key focus of her efforts. Through various initiatives, including financial assistance programmes and business training workshops, Bahraini women have been encouraged to enter the workforce and establish their own businesses. The Bahraini Women Development Centre provides training and resources to help women gain financial independence and entrepreneurial skills, ensuring they have the tools to succeed in the modern economy.
Promoting Women’s Rights Beyond Bahrain
HRH Princess Sabeeka’s influence extends beyond Bahrain, as she continues to advocate for gender equality on regional and international platforms. She has represented Bahrain in global forums, highlighting the importance of women’s contributions to economic and social development. Her work has earned her recognition as a leading figure in women’s rights advocacy, inspiring change
not only in Bahrain but across the Arab world. Her humanitarian efforts have also been commendable, focusing on initiatives that support underprivileged women and families. Through partnerships with international organisations, she has worked to improve the lives of women in disadvantaged communities, ensuring they have access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities.
Looking Towards the Future
As Bahrain joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, it is important to acknowledge the progress that has been made while recognising the work that still needs to be done. Women continue to face challenges, and it is through strong leadership, policy reforms and societal support that true gender equality can be achieved.
HRH Princess Sabeeka’s efforts have laid a strong foundation for the continued advancement of Bahraini women. Her dedication to gender equality serves as an inspiration, proving that with the right policies and support systems, women can thrive in any field they choose. Her work is a testament to Bahrain’s commitment to empowering women and ensuring they have the opportunities they deserve. International Women’s Day is not just about celebrating achievements but also about inspiring future generations to strive for a more inclusive and equal world. It is a day to appreciate the contributions of women, to amplify their voices and to continue working towards a society where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential.
As we reflect on the significance of this day, let us honour the achievements of women worldwide, including the remarkable contributions of HRH Princess Sabeeka. Her vision and leadership have paved the way for a brighter future for Bahraini women, ensuring they play an integral role in shaping the nation’s progress. Through continued advocacy, support and determination, the journey towards true gender equality will continue, bringing us closer to a world where every woman is empowered to succeed.
Leading with Innovation
Nadezhda Vasichkina, the new Director of Sales at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, brings a dynamic approach to the role, drawing on extensive global experience in hospitality.
With nearly two decades in the hospitality industry, Ms. Vasichkina’s career has taken her from Moscow to Bangkok, Amsterdam, Istanbul, the UAE and Qatar before leading her to Bahrain. “This incredible career path has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally, travel to numerous countries and collaborate with inspiring colleagues who have become lifelong friends,” she says.
Since arriving at the property, Ms. Vasichkina has been struck by the warmth and professionalism of the team. “This is one of the best teams I have ever worked with. From the moment I arrived in Bahrain, they amazed me with their genuine hospitality and attention to detail. “When my family arrived late at night, we found a well-stocked fridge, including traditional Russian porridge for my daughter, as well as a detailed onboarding plan.”
As Director of Sales, Ms. Vasichkina’s primary focus is strengthening the hotel’s reputation as a leading choice for government entities, embassies and international business events. She also sees great potential in expanding the hotel’s reach in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, capitalising on Bahrain’s increasing prominence as a business and leisure destination.
Ms. Vasichkina is particularly excited about positioning the hotel to attract new international markets. “Bahrain has seen a rise in visitors from Europe, China, Russia and CIS countries,” she explains. We are introducing a new guest service – complimentary transfers to beaches and exclusive discounted access – ensuring our guests experience the best of what Bahrain has to offer.”
- Nadezhda Vasichkina
A strong advocate for diversification, Ms. Vasichkina believes the hospitality sector must be proactive in managing risks. “Success in this dynamic environment demands diversification, continuous industry monitoring and swift decision-making.”
The hospitality industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years, from global crises to changing workforce expectations. Ms. Vasichkina believes addressing these issues requires both adaptability and a commitment to talent development. “One of the biggest challenges today is the shortage of young talent entering hospitality. To inspire the next generation, we must create opportunities that align with their evolving expectations.” She has worked closely with hospitality students in previous roles and continues to mentor young professionals.
Looking to the future, Ms. Vasichkina is eager to integrate emerging hospitality trends into the hotel’s strategy. “Bleisure travel – where business travellers extend their trips for leisure – is a key opportunity. We are also closely monitoring the rise of e-sports tourism, an industry that is growing rapidly.”
Her enthusiasm for hospitality remains undiminished. “What I love most about this industry is the people. Every day, I meet and work with individuals from all over the world, each with different backgrounds, professions and personalities. It is truly inspiring.
“That is why I fell in love with this industry from day one – and I know I always will love it. People often ask me: ‘Where would you work if not in hospitality?’ My answer is simple: nowhere but hospitality.”
Championing Creative Entrepreneurship
As the founder of the Creative Business Network (CBN), Rasmus Wiinstedt Tscherning has spent over a decade nurturing creative entrepreneurs worldwide. During his visit to Bahrain for the Global Women’s Economic Forum, shared his creative insight with Woman This Month.
CBN was founded with a clear objective: to support creative startups in turning their ideas into sustainable businesses. What began as a Danish competition in 2010 soon grew into a global network operating in over 80 countries.
“We try to bring creative solutions to life or to the world,” says Mr. Tscherning. “We’re not in the business because we think we need more hats, gloves and shoes – but because we need more sustainable fashion, life-saving devices or whatever creatives can come up with.”
One of CBN’s standout initiatives is the Creative Business Cup, a global startup competition that has seen strong participation from Bahrain. “Bahrain actually came second last year, which shows the strength of its creative entrepreneurs,” he notes.
Bahrain as a Creative Hub
Mr. Tscherning sees great potential in Bahrain as a regional centre for creativity and innovation. He has been in discussions with key stakeholders about hosting the Creative Business Cup global finals in Bahrain in 2026. “If we could get the right people together, Bahrain could be the host,” he states.
“But it requires commitment – venue, funding, hotels for speakers and organisation. It needs to come from here.”
With Bahrain’s increasing focus on SMEs and startups, he believes this could be a defining moment for the country’s creative sector.
“The economic future of Bahrain is in small businesses. There is a huge opportunity for creative entrepreneurs here.”
Empowering Women in Business
His visit to Bahrain coincided with the Global Women’s Economic Forum, where he highlighted the importance of female entrepreneurship. “Women’s empowerment makes a lot of sense, simply from a market perspective – it creates jobs and growth,” he explains. “The reason why many Scandinavian countries are wealthy is because the whole workforce was working. Having a fully active workforce benefits the economy.”
He believes Bahrain is already making strides in this area. “Women here are doing it for themselves. They just need more platforms to showcase their work.”
Mentorship and Market Access
While funding is crucial, Mr. Tscherning stresses the value of knowledge-sharing and mentorship. “Startups often think they need an investor, but what they actually need is knowledge,” he explains. “If they can bootstrap or get public funding, they might not even need external investment.”
CBN facilitates mentorship through programmes such as Foreign Mentor Weekends, where international experts provide intensive support to local startups. “Imagine 10–15 mentors coming to Bahrain for a weekend to help 20–30 startups refine their pitch and market strategies,” he suggests.
An Expanding Future
Mr. Tscherning is already thinking about the future of CBN and his own role. “Everyone has their time. My time as CEO may be coming to an end in the next few years,” he admits. “I’ve written myself into a corner with logistics and management – I’d much rather focus on the creative side.”
However, his commitment to Bahrain remains strong. “This is a unique market, and if the momentum continues, Bahrain could be at the forefront of the creative industries in the region.”
Ramadan: Finding Joy in the Chaos of Motherhood
The Holy Month of Ramadan is one of the most amazing times of the year, but it can also be extremely stressful for parents. Ouiam El Hassani offers advice on managing both your children and yourselves during what can be a testing time.
Ramadan in Bahrain is a whirlwind of samboosas, sleepless nights and surprisingly spiritual toddlers. Forget the Pinterest-perfect Ramadan decorations; mine are currently held together with prayer beads and hope. This holy month isn’t just about abstaining from food and drink; it’s about abstaining from losing your ever-loving mind while simultaneously trying to raise tiny humans who seem to have developed a superhuman ability to locate the one forbidden snack in the pantry. Consider this your survival guide, fellow mums!
Ramadan Rituals
Let’s be real, mums in Bahrain during Ramadan are basically superheroes. We’re juggling Iftars that could feed a small army (because, you know, unexpected guests are a thing), Suhoors that need to be ready at 4am (even though we’re running on, like, two hours of sleep), and the general chaos of family life, all while fasting. It’s like a marathon, except instead of a medal at the end, you get a mountain of dishes and the faint scent of fried onions clinging to your clothes for the next week. Glamorous, right? Pro tip: Embrace the chaos. Lower your expectations. If the kids eat cereal for Iftar one night, so be it.
Then there are the kids. Oh, the kids. Suddenly, they’re experts on Islamic history, quizzing you on the Prophet’s life while simultaneously demanding a juice box right now. Bedtime becomes a mythical creature, whispered about in hushed tones, never actually seen. And don’t even get me started on the “I’m hungry!” chorus that starts approximately 30 seconds after Iftar ends. It’s
like they have a secret pact with their stomachs to rebel against all forms of parental authority. How to survive this? Engage them! Get them involved in preparing simple dishes for Iftar. Think fruit skewers or helping to set the table. This keeps them occupied and makes them feel part of the festivities. Also, strategically assign screen time. A little Paw Patrol before Iftar can work wonders.

Creating Lasting Memories
But amidst the chaos, there’s magic. There’s the shared joy of breaking the fast together, the laughter echoing around the table, and the feeling of community during Taraweeh prayers (even if your youngest is using the prayer mat as a magic carpet). There are the sweet moments when your child surprises you with a thoughtful question about Ramadan or when they try to fast for a few hours (and then promptly demand a double helping of machboos). Want to cultivate these moments? Talk to your kids about Ramadan in age-appropriate ways. Explain why we fast, and focus on the positive aspects like sharing and kindness. Make it fun! Create a simple Ramadan calendar with stickers or small treats.
And let’s not forget the Ghabgas! These nightly gatherings are a feast for the senses and a fantastic opportunity to catch up with friends and family. It’s also a chance for the kids to run wild and burn off some energy, which, let’s face it, is a win for everyone. Just try to keep an eye on them; those little ones can disappear faster than a plate of luqaimat. Ghabga survival tip: bring a small bag of toys or books to keep the kids entertained. And if all else fails, bribe them with the promise of dessert.
Ramadan in Bahrain is a beautiful, chaotic, exhausting and ultimately rewarding experience. It’s a time for reflection, for connection and for reminding ourselves that even amidst the madness, there’s so much love and joy to be found. So, to all the mums out there navigating this Holy Month: you’re amazing. You’re strong. You’re probably running on caffeine and sheer willpower. But you’re also creating memories that will last a lifetime. And that, my friends, is something truly special. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I hear a small voice demanding more Vimto. Wish me luck! And may your Ramadan be filled with more laughter than tears (though, let’s be honest, there will probably be some of both). Good luck!

How To Dress Stylish in 2025 As A Busy Mum! 3 Fashion Tips That Work
Every Time!
It’s been said that dressing up can boost a person’s confidence and overall mood. But being stylish is not always an easy achievement for a busy mum. From running errands, to attending school events or work, and everything else in between, it can feel like there is no time to focus on appearance. I mean, who has time to prioritise personal style when you already wear so many hats?
If your daily responsibilities have gotten in the way of you looking and feeling your best, you don’t need to sacrifice your appearance any longer! You can be a stylish mum every single day and here are three tips to help you accomplish that;
Invest in quality basics that are practical and fashionable. Choose versatile pieces that can be dressed up like a classic blazer, a tailored pair of trousers or a flattering wrap dress. Pay attention to fabric here as you want to look great but also stay comfortable. Opt for fabrics that are easy to care for and breathable, like wrinkle-free cotton blends or linen. Fast yet fashionable is the name of the game here, so stay away from pieces with too many zippers or buttons.
Accessorise with statement pieces. Accessories are an easy way to take your outfit from average to glam while adding your own unique style to the look. Invest in stand-out pieces that elevate even the simplest of outfits such as a quality leather purse, a designer scarf or a stunning pair of sunglasses. Go for practical accessories like a cross-body bag that allows you to keep your hands free or a pair of comfortable yet fashionable loafers that make walking through those grocery aisles a breeze.
Never forget that being a mum is an incredible accomplishment and you deserve to feel confident and stylish every day. Don’t let the duties of mum life keep you from feeling your best! If you follow these tips, you’ll be on your way to effortless, fashion worthy style that is easy to maintain in your busy life. So get out there! Keep doing the work! But look amazing while doing it!
Adopting a simple self-care routine is the key to looking refreshed after those many sleepless nights of motherhood. In the morning, opt for simple makeup. Forget the contouring and false lashes. You only need a quality concealer, a bold red lip and a brown mascara to always look naturally put together. Try to eat healthy, exercise often and drink plenty of water. And always remember to put on a smile! A happy mum is a gorgeous mum!

Instead of Trying Hard to Make Money, First Understand Why You’re Not Making It
Many salon owners focus on making more money, but first, they must understand why their salon isn’t profitable. A busy salon doesn’t always mean a successful one. If you’re working hard but not seeing results, here’s why:
Every month, we invite readers to pose their own questions for Badia to answer in her next column. Make sure to ask your own by emailing ask@womanthismonth.com
1. Lack of Consultation
A proper consultation is crucial for every service. Without it, staff cannot identify client needs or recommend upgrades, leading to unsatisfied clients, complaints and lost income. A weak consultation process often stems from a lack of staff knowledge.
Solution:
• Train staff to ask the right questions before starting a service.
• Use consultation forms for better client understanding.
• Regularly assess staff expertise and update their skills.
• Teach staff to upsell services and retail products.
2. No Clear Standards or Protocols
Many salons lack set rules for services, staff performance and customer experience. This inconsistency causes client dissatisfaction and lost business.
Solution:
• Establish clear protocols for all services.
• Empower managers to enforce salon rules.
• Ensure all staff maintain the same service quality.
3. Not Using KPI Tools
Tracking only daily sales doesn’t reveal a salon’s real health. Without monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs), owners miss growth opportunities.
Solution:
Start tracking these vital numbers:
• Average client spending
• Client return rate
• Retail sales percentage
4. No Real Business Standards
Focusing solely on daily operations without building a strong structure results in weak management, unmotivated teams and financial struggles.
Solution:
• Set clear goals and measure progress.
• Train staff regularly to enhance skills and service quality.
• Ensure managers are well-trained to lead effectively.
Your First Client is Your Staff
Salon success depends on staff motivation, training and leadership. If your team isn’t properly equipped, your business won’t reach its full potential. Fixing internal issues first will lay the foundation for long-term success.
Staff leave because of poor leadership, lack of growth or feeling unimportant. Focus on building a strong, supportive culture, offering growth opportunities and paying attention to work-life balance. When they feel cared for and invested in, they’re more likely to stay.
Create a simple checklist to cover important areas like service, atmosphere, protocol, teamwork, professionalism and all that matter to you. Use a mystery client to assess your salon and get honest feedback. Meet your team on a weekly basis and hold monthly reviews.

Vinny Aseeja
Head of Business Development & Operations at Toni & Guy, Joz Salons and Topcut Barber & Spa
As one of the most dynamic women in the beauty industry, Head of Business Development & Operations at Toni & Guy, Joz Salons and Topcut Barber & Spa, Vinny Aseeja, has much wisdom to share. Let’s take a walk in her shoes!
What does a typical day in your shoes look like?
My day blends fitness, passion, work and relationships. Leadership involves balancing strategy and problem-solving while fostering innovation and efficiency. I stay adaptable, communicate openly and focus on team dynamics. At night, I feel grateful and excited for another chance to chase dreams and create impact.
What’s the most thrilling business breakthrough you’ve been part of?
Opening a salon, launching new services or introducing luxury treatments were game changers. Implementing technology, celebrity styling and destination weddings expanded our reach. These innovations strengthened the business, boosted team morale and improved client satisfaction, ensuring we stayed competitive and continued to grow.
How would you describe your leadership style?
Empathetic, visionary and adaptable. I prioritise understanding my team, setting long-term goals and embracing change. The salon industry evolves constantly, so staying flexible and forwardthinking ensures growth, innovation and a supportive work environment.
What’s one place you can’t wait to travel to, and why?
Bali or Santorini. Bali’s wellness retreats could inspire new spa treatments, while Santorini’s breathtaking scenery offers the perfect place to recharge. Both destinations provide relaxation, creativity and fresh business inspiration.
How do you recalibrate when things don’t go as planned?
I assess the issue, communicate with my team and adjust goals. Staying flexible and open to change allows me to turn setbacks into opportunities. Innovation, problem-solving and transparency keep both operations and growth on track.
How would you describe yourself in one word?
Resilient. Leadership requires bouncing back from setbacks, staying focused and pushing forward despite challenges.
If your career journey was a book title, what would it be, and why?
‘Leading with Vision: Building Success One Step at a Time.’ It reflects my strategic leadership, adaptability and commitment to growth while managing daily operations.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
‘Lead by example, not by expectation.’ Demonstrating values, work ethic and behaviour inspires trust and motivation far more than simply instructing a team.
What’s your go-to way to recharge or find inspiration?
Spending time in nature. Walks, hikes or quiet outdoor moments clear my mind and bring fresh ideas. Creative hobbies and learning new skills also inspire innovation.
