MORE ALIVE THAN EVER BEFORE
A rollercoaster lifestyle, diagnosis of two autoimmune conditions and a near-death experience led Amreeta Mohandas to a healing
Ayurvedic lifestyle. The big corporation employee turned Ayurvedic wellness coach tells Farah Baig about being back from the brink of death, the lifechanging effects of Ayurveda and her quest to guide busy women on their wellness journey.
Progress is often equated with modernity although the two couldn’t be more different. Sometimes, following what could be considered “modern” can in fact have devastating effects on our health and overall lives. Like most of us, Amreeta Mohandas once embodied society’s image of a highly successful, modern-day career woman; she was born and raised in the Middle East and was steadily climbing the corporate ladder at a big firm unknowingly neglecting herself.
“I can say that I’ve had my fair share of experience leading the big corporate life. I worked in the financial department of a multinational company which sold the industry’s most popular processed food – a life that was far from my ethos of healthy living,” she says.
“I can happily say that I have left the corporate lifestyle behind consciously to pursue Ayurveda and the passion to help women heal. This is especially in the case of women with chronic conditions who I persevere to help take their health and healing back into their hands,” she says with a smile.
Where It All Started
Today, Amreeta is a doting wife and loving mother to her nine-year-old daughter, but her life might’ve followed a very different path just a few years ago. “While I enjoyed the perks and the learning that came from being in the corporate world, I was sucked into the detrimental, busy lifestyle that came with it with less sleep, irregular eating habits, long hours of sitting in front of a device or in traffic,” she says.
“I might’ve turned heads at the time, but Ayurveda and yoga weren’t a part of my vocabulary then and I never exercised,” she admits.
By 2015, soon after becoming a new parent, Amreeta was sadly diagnosed with two autoimmune conditions: Myasthenia Gravis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. “These conditions are related to muscle weakness and joint pain, which might seem simple enough, but life was horrible at this point. I was lost in motherhood, working 10 hours daily at my job and had two conditions of which one was rare so not many doctors knew anything about,” she says wistfully.
“While my friends were bar hopping, I was going from hospital to hospital, looking for a good doctor and medicines that would relieve my symptoms. By this point I couldn’t walk, talk or eat like most people do. In fact, I was even bound to a wheelchair for a few days,” she adds.
Being mentally, physically and spiritually drained, she resorted to taking several allopathic medications in the hopes of finding some relief. “I was taking a very high dosage of these steroids and immunosuppressants for symptomatic relief and ended up gaining a lot of weight. The same woman that once turned heads was drawing attention for the wrong reason – pity. It hurt my self-worth.”
Her Brush with Death
By 2016, Amreeta’s health had declined further and she had experienced her first
near death experience. “I remember eating my first meal while I lay in a hospital bed in Delhi, India. I had gone through a seven-hour surgery which the team believed had gone well until I nearly lost consciousness. They soon realised that I was bleeding into my lungs,” she says.
“In a matter of minutes, they had drilled two pipes into my lungs to drain the blood. I would’ve died if I hadn’t complained that something wasn’t right,” she says of the harrowing experience. “It was that incident that changed my perception and my priorities.”
On returning to Dubai, where she lived at the time, Amreeta decided to quit her job, focus on her health and enjoy being a mother. “My baby was just one at the time this had all transpired –a very precious age with a lot of milestones and I wanted to experience it all. I was, however, still experimenting with a lot of different diets and was on several medications,” she says.
Ayurveda - A New Lease on Life
Within a year, Amreeta moved to Bahrain with her family which was where her life was about to take on a positive change. “I met Dr. Ravi at Srisoukya and Tracey Burrows, a yoga and health coach who brought Ayurveda and yoga into my life in such an easy, practical way that I loved the science. The more I learned it, the more I wanted to know. And consequentially, the more I healed myself.”
She beams about the benefits of Ayurveda and how it taught her to feed her body and mind on all levels. “For the first time in my life, I believed this was where I belonged. I couldn’t unlearn this ancient science, wanted to learn more about it and put it into practice. It was hard work but a beautiful one,” she says.
By following an Ayurvedic lifestyle, Amreeta was soon weaned off her medication within a year. She noticed positive changes: better digestion, an improved sleep pattern and vital energy levels. “I finally felt alive in my body. I felt whole and comfortable in my own skin for the first time and stronger than I ever was before,” she says.
Sharing her thoughts on Ayurveda and wellness practices rooted in India, she says: “A lot of current modern wellness trends have their roots in ancient Ayurvedic texts. This could be intermittent fasting, sipping hot lemon water or living in alignment with the circadian rhythm. It’s interesting to see what is considered Nobel prize-worthy science in recent times has been practiced for more than 5000 years by our grandparents in the villages of India for generations. It honestly fills me with pride,” she says.
Helping Busy Women
“I now focus on helping busy women as I resonate with them. I feel the challenges that
these women go through on a day-to-day basis that come in the way of healthcare, but I know how to overcome it too.”
Amreeta shares how Ayurveda is a preventive science that focuses on the root cause and how its beauty lies in its personalisation. So, Amreeta co-founded SOMAforwellness along with her friend, Swathi, to help women on their wellness journey. “An Ayurvedic regimen is not one-size-fits-all. Instead, it is tailormade and personalised for every individual. SOMAforwellness is a space for women to come heal and learn how to take care of themselves through the way they eat, sleep, breathe and move,” she states.
Amreeta is now determined to help women lead a happier, healthier and more fulfilling life and has no regrets on leaving the corporate lifestyle behind as she now wakes up with a deep sense of fulfilling her dharma. She found her sense of purpose. “I wanted to take my past experiences and the wisdom from the ancient teachings of Ayurveda and Yoga, and incorporate them into practical life skills for modern women – those steel-magnolias living in cities, seeking success and equality in the corporate world – or those go-getter mamas trucking their kids around town to endless extracurricular activities, battling busy highways downing double expressos,” she says passionately.
“I used to be exactly that kind of woman… I know how it feels,” she concludes.

CREATING A SUSTAINABLE ORGANISATION
According to Google Trends, the term ‘sustainability’ has steadily grown in popularity worldwide since early 2022. Chartered Manager, Eman Deabil (DipESG, PfMP, IPMO-P, SIP), explains the concept and breaks down how we can create a sustainable organisation.
In my article published in last month’s edition of Woman This Month, I spoke about sustainability in general and the rise of the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) role. I also gave you a glimpse at the history of the GCC as far as ESG is concerned. In this edition, we will cover high-level plans on how to create a sustainable organisation by looking at the organisation’s operating model.
Before I put things into perspective, let’s first explore the terminologies below:
Sustainability: This is a broader concept of how to ensure driving value over a long period of time by looking at different aspects.
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG, for short): A term that was officially coined in 2004 with the publication of the United Nations report titled “Who Cares Wins”.
ESG normally represents the three pillars that we need to set plans and KPIs to ensure sustainability. It became the terminology used for the reporting side
of sustainability. The three pillars, along with a few examples, are:
1. Environmental: Factors related to how an organisation has an impact on nature such as climate, carbon emissions, biodiversity, water, electricity, waste, and paper.
2. Social: Factors related to how an organisation manages its relationships with its employees, customers, suppliers, and communities where it operates, such as training, inclusion, diversity, and equality.
3. Governance: Factors related to how an organisation is led and managed, such as board independence, transparency, diversity, and whistleblowing.
In many publications and literature, both terminologies (i.e., ESG and Sustainability) are being used interchangeably, and here they will be used interchangeably as well.
Operating model: This defines how an organisation operates to achieve its objectives and deliver value to its customers. In general, it encompasses four main components: processes, organisation, technology and information (POTI).
Processes Organisation Technology Information
The set of activities that an organisation performs to deliver intended value to its customers, and everything that supports this such as policies and procedures.
The people within the organisation, their capabilities, their roles and responsibilities, the structure.
The systems and tools that support the organisation’s operations and enable it to achieve its objectives.
Insights and reports that the organisation uses to make informed decisions and improve its performance.
Below are a few steps to start the journey of building a sustainable organisation by looking at the operating model components. Having said that, these components are interrelated and overlap.
Now let’s look at the operating model with an ESG lens:
Environmental Social Governance
• Examine your value chain and make sure your processes are streamlined (be they manual or digital) to drive long-term value, enable operational excellence, and reduce operating costs.
Processes
• Adopt a circular economy model to move from a linear value-chain to a circular value chain.
• Improve the process, cut redundancies, automate workflows, and create a paperless environment.
• Adopt strategies to reduce carbon footprint: work from home, apply car-pooling for employees, work with local suppliers.
• Reduce, reuse, recycle materials wherever possible.
• Switch to eco-friendly products.
Establish awareness of the importance and urgency of ‘sustainability’, create relevant training programs, and build capabilities around climate change.
Engage relevant stakeholders and train them on how to adopt sustainable practices and follow seamless processes.
Adhere to regulatory requirements, controls, and best practices.
Set the required policies to ensure maximum transparency, accountability, fairness, and equality.
Acquire sustainable technology products (the ones that consume less electricity and reduce carbon emissions).
Look at the technological resources being utilized and optimize them.
Look for alternative ways to minimise the carbon emitted from technology.
Explore automation opportunities for repetitive tasks (using robotics, for instance) to reduce manual interventions and paper.
Create a culture that embraces diversity and encourages equal opportunities.
Set a process to reward the excellent performers and reprimand the underperformers (ESG objectives and deliverables).
Train employees on how to use the available technological resources.
Partner with local suppliers, vendors, and consultants.
Clarify the roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities as far as the ESG is concerned, and set clear job descriptions and expectations.
Use technology with the intention to increase transparency and accountability, by sharing information and tracking decisions. Automate processes and reduce potential human error.
Use technology to offer a level of security to combat cyber risks or data breaches.
Set clear ESG objectives, collect relevant KPIs, targets, and initiatives, and assign owners to measure the performance. Communicate and report the performance indicators to stakeholders on a regular basis (on a defined frequency), and in a transparent manner. Support the information with evidence.
Examine the information reported and assess where you stand vis-à-vis where you want to go (target), providing justifications if needed or propose corrective actions if deemed required.
The above is just a brief blueprint on how to create a sustainable organisation; however, with sustainability comes innovation. The more we believe in creating long-term value, the more we become innovative in coming up with ideas that serve this purpose.
Meet the Terrible Eights
Does it feel like your 8-year-old is playing with dolls one second and talking back the next? It may not feel great, but it’s perfectly normal. Here’s what our parenting columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, has to say:
While parents mentally prepare themselves for the terrible twos or secretly dread the idea of their sweet baby becoming a teenager, parenting an eightyear-old may feel like the hardest age to parent because it can come as a surprise that things aren’t smooth sailing between kindergarten and early teen years.
Your child’s personality, temperament, and environment all come into play, of course, but a lot happens developmentally in the growing eight- or nine-year-old brain and body that contributes to this age-specific behavior. Although school-age children are less physically demanding than little ones, their social and emotional challenges can be complex and difficult for parents to observe.
What’s happening developmentally for children at this age? The world is opening up, and your child is getting ready to step out and explore their independence. The ages of eight and nine mark a growth spurt both mentally and physically, and especially emotionally, this
growth spurt makes it a challenging time for children and also for their parents. Eight-yearolds make big cognitive leaps as they develop more advanced language, math, and writing skills. They are working on understanding cause and effect and how things work. Morals and values are also beginning to develop. At the same time, motor skills advance, and even though they aren’t necessarily going through puberty yet, they become more conscious of their growing bodies.
Then there’s emotional development which means kids are experimenting with independence and learning who they are. They experience a growing desire to belong to a group and to find their place in the social order, whether in school, neighborhood or athletics. For this reason, social exclusion is more painful. In other words, eight- and nineyear-olds are navigating the world in entirely new ways, pushing their parents as they assert their independence. As they experiment with autonomy, you can expect your child to be extra sensitive, demanding and more difficult.
Patience
It may take a few deep breaths, but understanding that your child is in the middle of a developmental transition can help you keep cool and respond rather than react. It’s hard to be a child who wants to be a grown-up on one hand and needs a hug at the same time.
Limit social media
We know social media isn’t great for children’s mental health, but social media may even influence “tween” behavior earlier than expected. One factor that may make the life of an eight or nine-year-old more complicated and, ultimately, more difficult, is growing up in a world with more powerful social media and pervasive cultural influence. It can be challenging for children this age to compare themselves to their peers and social norms at this vulnerable age. Skip social media ideally, or have agreed-upon guidelines and open conversations about what your child sees online.
Sometimes, knowing a phase is normal and will eventually pass can ease anxiety. To help make this pre-tween phase go a little more smoothly, here are some strategies parents can employ:
Coach but don’t control
It is essential to coach and guide your child so they can learn to problem-solve and regulate their emotions. Help your child learn to identify and manage their fast-evolving emotions, a critical skill that will serve them well for life. Parents should work with their children to create age-appropriate household responsibilities. At the same time, you can foster independence by letting them try to choose their own clothing or allowing them to spend more time with friends outside of school. This allows children the opportunity to explore their new-found desire for individuality in a safe environment.
Remember
Your child needs support and boundaries even as they roll their eyes and test limits. It’s hard to be a child at this stage in the same way that it’s hard to be their parent. Plus, as you work on communication and trust at this age, you’ll create a solid foundation for your relationship as you move into the tween and teen years (and beyond).
Good luck!
your child still needs you, even if they push you away.

The Notebook. It is a remarkable movie! Extremely well-made and sentimental. Not just in the romantic sense but also the way the director does it is fantastic. It portrays the thrill, excitement, and wilderness of young love. The story is compelling from the opening credits to the closing credits. The themes portrayed in this movie were handled in a great way. The Notebook for me is the only one that completely touched me. It is wonderful to look at, has a lovely soundtrack, a touching story and a great script.
