Fresh from her coronation as Miss Universe Bahrain 2024, Shereen Ahmed is busy preparing for the upcoming final in Mexico later this month. In an exclusive interview with Woman This Month, she tells Farah Baig about her emotions after winning, her preparations for the upcoming pageant and how she plans to use her platform to inspire the next generation.
Congratulations on being crowned Miss Universe Bahrain 2024. How do you feel about winning and what inspired you to pursue this prestigious title?
Thank you! It has been an exhilarating few weeks since I found out I won the crown. I’m a little nervous for what’s to come, but ultimately excited to showcase the beauty of Bahrain’s culture and traditions to the rest of the Universe. Following my first stint in 2022, it always felt like there was unfinished business and that I could do more; however, the previous age limit of 28 years old had ended the dream of rejoining. During that time, I focused on my career as a TV presenter and found my love for pageantry through being inspired by a former Miss Universe Philippines candidate, Michelle Dee, whose journey spoke to me because she was advocacy-focused and intentional in her campaign. Then, the lifting of age limits was announced by the MU organisation, which felt like destiny was calling.
What did you learn from your first experience, and what changed the second time?
I assessed what went wrong with my previous performance and noted how I felt throughout it. Although I was somewhat prepared, I did not take into account the importance of training with others. So, in my second round, I reached out to have a Q&A and Personal Development coach, an online
and in-person pasarela trainer, as well as professional pageant makeup artists and stylists to receive advice on the tricks of the trade. I was fortunate enough to have a network of very loving and supportive people. But above all, it was truly my mindset that needed a complete transformation. To exude grace and confidence, I needed to genuinely feel it internally. So, I listened to self-improvement podcasts, watched interviews of women I admired, and took action on the things I had been wanting to do because, as one of the pageant coaches I learned from said: “Confidence comes from certainty, and certainty comes from action.”
Could you give our readers some insight into your personal and professional background?
I am a 29-year-old TV host, journalist and model based between Dubai and Bahrain. I was raised by a single Filipina mom and loved growing up in Bahrain until I decided to study outside the country independently. I have a podcast called Loud Besties with my best friend, Hiedy Riyan, to help younger girls feel a sense of sisterhood as we discuss navigating life’s transitions from your 20s to your 30s.
After graduating from Middlesex University Dubai with a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Media, I interned and eventually secured a full-time role at Lovin Dubai as a content writer, social media manager and presenter. I later managed Lovin Saudi and
briefly served as editor-in-chief of LocalBH Upon returning to Dubai, I landed a gig as a presenter, speaking in English, Tagalog and some Arabic. In 2022, I placed as 2nd runnerup at Miss Universe Bahrain, and now, I am honoured to be Miss Universe Bahrain 2024.
Would you say your experience as a presenter and content creator has helped you in the pageant thus far?
Absolutely. Pageants nowadays require you to campaign for yourself and your country both offline and online. My background in content creation and my interest in creative outlets like photography and visuals helped me bring to life what I had always envisioned. Another requirement is to be able to use your voice as a brand ambassador for your country, your people and the philanthropies that matter most to you. In that regard, being a presenter meant I was already comfortable in front of the camera and only needed to work on being concise and truly knowing who I am and how I want to express that.
How do you feel the representation of Bahraini culture can be enhanced at the Miss Universe pageant?
I think the inclusion of Bahrain in the pageant for the fourth consecutive year, and hopefully more, is already generating gradual interest and awareness about the Kingdom. Pageantry is a huge platform, with 10 million viewers tuning into the competition annually. That’s 10 million pairs of eyes and ears on our country, and it is up to each delegate to represent Bahrain in the best way they see fit. Slow steps are still steps in the right direction.
How do you hope to further change the perception of women in the Middle East through the pageant?
By simply existing. It is not up to us to change the world’s perception of us; it is a collaboration of spaces opening their doors to Arab women and Arab women choosing to take up space in their respective platforms of choice. Middle Eastern women come from diverse backgrounds, religions and values, and our common denominator is that we accept, tolerate and respect one another –regardless of these differences.
Miss Universe takes place in Mexico this month. How are you preparing for the upcoming pageant, and how would you describe your emotions at this point?
My emotions have been varying since the coronation. Sometimes I’m elated, other times nervous, but mostly I am focused on one task at a time. As a candidate with limited time to prepare, there is a lot to do in a short amount of time – pasarela training, more Q&A practice, advocacy work, creating social media content leading up to the pageant, and building awareness through media. Apart from that, I’ve also been practicing
my makeup application, hairstyling, creating mood boards for my outfits, and familiarising myself with the beautiful country of Mexico.
Can you share some causes that you are particularly passionate about? How do you plan to use your platform to promote them?
My primary causes are Hope Amel UAE and Hope Amal Bahrain, as well as any other community or social cause that pertains to the wellbeing of our fellow Arab brothers and sisters. I am there to either lend a helping hand or to use my voice.
What would be your advice for young women as someone who will be representing the country on a global scale?
Do not ever allow society to dictate who you are and what you can and cannot do. Every waking moment of this life is precious, so live as true to yourself as you can. You won’t regret it.
What’s something about you that always seems to surprise people?
It’s probably that I can speak Tagalog fluently. Many won’t assume that I am half Filipina at first glance, so it gets quite a reaction whenever I do.
Finally, what are your aspirations beyond the Miss Universe pageant?
Short-term, I want to start a digital show that highlights mental health and tools to help people navigate it or anything within the wellness industry. Mentoring future Miss Universe Bahrain or Middle Eastern candidates is another goal, as I hope for greater and better representation for our
Kingdom. Lastly, I would love to host a web series in English, exploring the rich history and culture of Bahrain in documentary format, all the way up to its modern-day successes.
Long-term, I plan to write a book, starting with a collection of poetry I’ve written from my youth until my 30s. In the future, I aim to write either a novel or an autobiography. My biggest dream as a little girl was to be a writer, and although I achieved that professionally, I have yet to publish an actual book under my byline. Additionally, it would be a dream come true to study Archaeology or Egyptology and uncover treasures from the past.
Magda Butrym’s Autumn-Winter 2024
Collections has a fine selection that’s just right for the season. Plan your OOTD with some inspo from Magda Butrym.
This season, Magda Butrym embarks on a fascinating journey through visual narratives inspired by the iconic ‘Grey Gardens’, capturing the spirit of its eccentric yet charismatic inhabitants, and translating it into a compelling collection that exudes internal strength, confidence and a cinematic heroine’s allure.
The AW24 collection is an ode to freedom and a challenge to conventional fashion norms. Featuring head-swathed maxi cardigans, oversized shearling coats reminiscent of Edie’s garden attire, and a rich palette of saturated colours, the collection brilliantly juxtaposes robust outerwear with seductive shifts. The result is a captivating blend of masculine and feminine fashion that signals the joy of blending contrasting styles.
At the heart of the collection lies Magda Butrym’s appreciation for Polish cultural heritage, manifested through the standout accessory of the season – the headscarf. Symbolising femininity and rooted in Slavic tradition, these monochrome and floral adorned shawls embrace and safeguard the essence of womanhood, standing as a distinctive stylistic hallmark of the house.
From the wild roses adorning floral headscarves and petal-shaped silhouettes to the blossoming jewellery, Magda Butrym invites women to discover a sense of genuine style amidst a backdrop of untamed nature and industrial surroundings.
This collection is a must-have for those who seek to express their individuality and strength through style.
Earrings to wishlist!
I don’t want to define women. I want to empower them. I want us all to feel comfortable in our own skin, happy, powerful and confident. We should all be our own muses.
- Magda.
Born and raised in Bahrain, Ella discovered her passion for art when she was 10, thanks to the encouragement of her father, Devji Ramji. From an early age, she knew art was more than just a hobby – it was her voice, her way of expressing her thoughts and dreams.
In 1984, she launched her career as a contemporary artist, and two decades later, her dream of opening an art gallery in Bahrain became a reality.
Ella’s unique artistic style features bold lines and shapes. With minimal colours, she highlights the emotional depth of her paintings while omitting facial details. Her palette knife allows her to channel emotion into each stroke.
Ella’s journey didn’t stop at painting, extending her artistic vision into fashion and jewellery, creating something that was not just visually appealing but wearable. Thus, Ella Jewellery was born.
With her love for 21k gold and her deep connection to Indian roots, she began crafting intricate designs that resonate with both art lovers and fashion enthusiasts alike. What sets Ella’s jewellery apart is its connection to her paintings. Each piece is a limited edition, inspired by her art and cultural heritage.
Her ‘Noor Collection’ draws inspiration from Bahrain’s architecture, blending traditional elegance with contemporary artistic boldness. These aren’t just accessories; they are pieces of art that tell a story, designed for those who appreciate beauty with depth
Ella Prakash, a visionary who has been making waves in Bahrain’s creative scene for years, speaks exclusively to Woman
This Month to share insights into what fuels her artistic passions, the challenges she has overcome and her vision for her brands –Ella Jewellery, Ella Art and Ella Impressions.
Creating jewellery is no less an art form than painting for Ella. Each design begins as an idea born from her artwork and goes through a meticulous process. She starts with the concept, carefully considering how her artistic style can translate into something wearable. Then comes the intricate craftsmanship – each curve, every detail is thoughtfully crafted by master craftsmen to reflect her artistic vision. Her jewellery pieces are more than just fashion accessories – they embody a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern design. Whether it’s the gold elements, the cultural motifs or the contemporary silhouettes, her work offers a fresh perspective on jewellery design.
But Ella’s approach isn’t just about luxury – it’s about ethics too. Her brand emphasises sustainable practices, from the ethical sourcing of materials to production techniques that minimise waste. This dedication makes her work beautiful and responsible, appealing to discerning buyers who value aesthetics and ethics.
While Ella’s roots are firmly planted in Bahrain, her work has gained international recognition. One of the most significant milestones in her career was participating in Jewellery Arabia 2021, a platform that introduced her designs to a broader audience. This experience helped her understand what her global clientele seeks in high-end, artdriven jewellery.
Juggling her roles as an artist, designer and businesswoman is no small feat, but Ella’s ability to balance creativity with the demands of running multiple brands has been key to her success.
“I manage my time and energy to stay balanced,” she explains, revealing that her daily routine of meditation, exercise and painting is crucial in keeping her focused and productive.
Ella’s unique approach to combining art with jewellery is an extension of her personal story and also a testament to her belief that fashion can be meaningful. Every piece she creates carries with it a sense of purpose, heritage and artistry – making each one as special as the person who wears it.

In the modern world, beauty and wellness are vital aspects of medical science. Laila Bukanan has emerged as a trailblazer in semi-permanent makeup and paramedical procedures. As the owner and founder of LB Beauty Studio, she is not only an Elite and Advanced Semi-Permanent Makeup Artist but also a Master International Trainer. She tells Woman This Month more about her career and work to empower cancer survivors.
Ms. Bukanan’s expertise, particularly in paramedical procedures like areola pigmentation for cancer patients postmastectomy, has positioned her as the first and only technician in Bahrain to collaborate with plastic surgeons. Through her innovative work, she merges the art of pigmentation with cutting-edge medical science, providing life-changing services to women recovering from the physical and emotional impact of breast cancer.
Indeed, Ms. Bukanan’s journey began in Austria, where she encountered a cancer patient whose procedure had left her physically and mentally distressed. This experience inspired her to focus on a procedure that not only restores a natural appearance but also has a profound psychological impact. “It was at that moment that I decided to dedicate myself to helping women regain their sense of identity through areola pigmentation,” she says. With a degree from the prestigious International Passport for Aestheticians in Switzerland, Ms. Bukanan specialises in assisting cancer patients, as well as offering cosmetic enhancements for eyebrows, lips and eyeliner.
Chosen by the renowned Swiss Colour Academy as a certified paramedical technician, she has completed rigorous theoretical and practical training using the latest innovations. “We use only Swiss Colour-approved devices and pigments, designed specifically for these procedures,” she explains. “The advanced nano cartridges and meticulous planning ensure that every step is tailored to achieve the best possible results. Ultimately, I am passionate about delivering excellence, combining technical skill with a deep understanding of her clients’ needs.”
One of the greatest challenges Ms. Bukanan has faced in Bahrain is raising awareness about the benefits of areola pigmentation. “Most women are unfamiliar with the procedure, and obtaining approval for the necessary devices and pigments was a lengthy process,” she notes. However, her determination and commitment to adhering to the highest standards have paid off, as her work is now recognised and trusted by both clients and medical professionals in the Kingdom. Plastic surgeons often refer patients to her, and the first appointment is a crucial step in the process. “We reassure the client about how minimalistic the procedure is, and showing before and after photos always has a powerful impact,” she shares.
The most rewarding part of her work, she says, is witnessing the transformation in her clients’ confidence and self-esteem. “To see a woman smile again, to feel that she has regained her identity, is indescribably rewarding.” This is the driving force behind Ms. Bukanan’s dedication, and it’s evident in the warm and welcoming environment of her studio. From the moment clients step in, they are met with soothing music and a comfortable atmosphere, reassured that they are in expert hands.
Thanks to her expertise and determination, areola pigmentation is now available and recognised in Bahrain. She continues to set the standard for paramedical procedures, combining innovation, artistry and compassion in a way that truly changes lives.
The K Hotel hosted a signing ceremony to mark a momentous occasion where representatives from The K Hotel and Think Pink came together to solidify the partnership by lighting up its building during the entire month of October, as well as supporting Breast Cancer Awareness initiatives this year, The K Hotel aims to raise awareness about breast cancer and demonstrate its commitment to supporting those affected by this pressing matter.
Financial Literacy Advocate, author and Assistant Professor – Finance at Bahrain Polytechnic, Dr. Bilal Ahmad Pandow, highlights the importance of financial literacy on the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child.
Every year on October 11, the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child to highlight the challenges girls face and promote their empowerment. This year, the focus has expanded beyond simply ensuring that girls receive an education. It’s time to emphasise a critical but often overlooked skill: financial literacy. Educating girls on how to manage money, understand savings, investments and economic decision-making could be one of the most transformative ways to create a brighter, more equitable future.
According to UNICEF, despite clear evidence showing the importance of girls’ education for development, gender gaps in schooling remain widespread. Globally, 119 million girls are not attending school, with 34 million of them at the primary level, 28 million at the lower-secondary level, and 58 million at the upper-secondary level. In conflict-affected countries, girls are more than twice as likely to be out of school compared to those in peaceful regions.
A 2018 study by the World Bank estimates that restricted access to education for girls, along with obstacles to finishing 12 years of schooling, results in a loss of USD15 trillion to USD30 trillion in lifetime productivity and earnings for countries.
While the disparities are more noticeable in countries experiencing fragility, conflict and
violence. In these nations, girls are 2.5 times more likely than boys to be out of school, and at the secondary level, they are 90 percent more likely to be out of school compared to girls in non-fragility, conflict and violence regions.
Financial literacy isn’t just about knowing how to handle money; it’s about economic independence. For girls, especially those from underprivileged or conflict-affected regions, understanding finance can be lifechanging.
With financial education, they gain the tools to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. It’s not just about survival; it’s about thriving. Financial literacy teaches them how to save, invest and manage resources efficiently, giving them control over their economic future.
Girls who know how to handle money are less likely to be abused, engaged or trafficked for sexual purposes. They can handle life’s problems better, even when things are tough, if they know how to handle their money and fight for their financial rights.
Giving girls more power is often done by philanthropists through direct financial help. Even though the goal is beneficial, this is only a short-term fix for a long-term issue. Instead, philanthropists should support projects that teach and improve skills, especially when it comes to finances.
Cashouts can help girls and their families with short-term needs, but they don’t fix the problems that make people poor in the first place. Teaching girls how to handle money is a skill that will help them for a long time. In other words, “teach someone to fish rather than giving them a fish,” this is the old
saying. Donors who put money into financial education are investing in a long-term way to fight poverty and injustice.
Getting educated, especially in financial topics, helps girls come up with creative ways to make money. Girls who know about finances are more likely to start their own business, which will help the market and create jobs. Direct financial support can be helpful in the short term, but it rarely encourages people to be more creative, which is what drives long-term economic growth.
Girls who learn about finances grow up to be financially independent adults. They are less likely to depend on help from outside sources and more likely to make smart financial choices that protect their futures. To break the circle of poverty, people need to be able to live on their own for a long time.
Learning about finances can help close the gap between men and women in the workforce. Women around the world are less likely than men to own land or be able to use financial services. Philanthropists can help close this gap by teaching girls how to handle and grow their finances.
Philanthropists have a unique opportunity to empower the next generation of women by focusing on education rather than immediate financial aid. Programmes that prioritise financial literacy should be at the forefront of any girl-child empowerment initiative. These programmes not only provide valuable life skills but also instill confidence, self-reliance and a sense of purpose in girls.
In regions like sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and conflict-affected areas such as Kashmir, where girls face systemic barriers to education and independence,
financial literacy programmes are crucial. Philanthropists can collaborate with schools, local NGOs and international organisations to integrate financial literacy into existing educational curricula.
Girls can learn about financial matters in a variety of ways, such as in the classroom, through workshops, mentorship programmes and online resources. These methods can make learning more comprehensive, making sure that everyone can receive and enjoy financial education.
The International Day of the Girl Child is a reminder of how much girls around the world can do. Giving girls financial support may help in the short term, but giving them financial literacy is an investment in their future. Giving money to charities that teach girls about financial literacy doesn’t just improve people’s lives; it also makes the world more equitable and prosperous.
Let’s move beyond temporary solutions and invest in the transformative power of education, ensuring that girls everywhere have the tools to shape their financial futures.

Experience the transformative power of lipstick with CHANEL’s iconic 31 Le Rouge collection. Revealed in 2023 with a palette of twelve shades in a satin finish, the 31 LE ROUGE collection is expanded to include twelve new matte and luminous shades.
With a new palette of exquisite colours comes CHANEL’s creative inspiration – in this case, Gabrielle Chanel’s rue Cambon apartment and ateliers in addition to the creations that were designed there. Exploring the 12 new shades is an enthralling experience on its own. Red, as
seen on the tinted lips of Marilyn Monroe. Pink, more subtle, is a legacy of regal attire that has transformed to currently reflect a barbie-like innocence. Orange, a substitute for gold and the traditional colour of silk, is now synonymous with energy borrowed from natural elements. Lastly, intense, deep shades of rich brown through to plum, saw chocolate-coloured pigments blend with complex mauve to gradually transform into a feminist symbol. Aside from the expressive colours, the lipstick has a hydrating and comfortable formula, enriched with oil from the gardenia, a white flower cultivated by CHANEL, which elevates the lips day after day: they are plumper, smoother and firmer.

You can never be too young to start learning. Ouiam El Hassani shares nine ways to boost your baby’s reading skills.
As parents, we want to give our babies the best start in life, and one of the most crucial areas of development is early literacy. Building a strong foundation for language and literacy skills early on can have a lasting impact on a child’s future success. Engaging your baby in literacy activities not only fosters a love for reading but also promotes cognitive development, vocabulary acquisition and bonding moments.
As an early-years teacher, I have compiled nine interactive and fun reading activities that will help you lay the groundwork for your baby’s lifelong journey with language and literacy.
Cuddle up with your little one and make storytime a regular part of your daily routine. Choose colourful board books or soft cloth books with simple, repetitive texts and vibrant illustrations. Engage your baby by using different voices, facial expressions and gestures as you read. Even though they may not understand all the words, your baby will start associating reading with love and affection.
Expose your baby to the musicality of language through nursery rhymes and songs. The rhythmic patterns and repetition in nursery rhymes help develop phonological awareness — a critical skill for future reading success. Sing nursery rhymes, play finger games and use hand puppets to make the experience more engaging. Your baby will love the interaction and the soothing melodies.
Babies learn through their senses, so provide them with opportunities to explore different textures. Create a sensory bin filled with soft fabric books, crinkly books and books with touch-and-feel elements. Let your baby touch, feel and interact with the textures as you talk about the different sensations they experience.
Babies love surprises! Use peek-a-boo books to capture their attention and build anticipation. Lift the flaps, uncover hidden objects or reveal characters as you play peek-a-boo. This activity not only keeps your baby engaged but also introduces them to the concept of cause and effect.
Take your baby on a visual adventure by engaging in picture talk. Choose books with colourful, large and clear illustrations. Point to objects and name them, talk about the colours, shapes and actions you see. Encourage your baby to imitate sounds or gestures from the pictures. This activity enhances their vocabulary and language skills while strengthening their visual comprehension.
Start building your baby’s vocabulary early on by using flashcards with simple pictures and words. Show them the cards and name the objects or animals depicted. Encourage your baby to touch or point to the pictures. Repetition is key, so aim to make it a part of your daily routine.
As your baby grows, introduce them to simple riddles and rhymes. For example, say, “I have a tail and I say, ‘meow.’ What am I?” Encourage your baby to guess the answer and respond with excitement when they get it right. This activity boosts their critical thinking skills and builds their ability to make connections between words and concepts.
Involve the whole family in your reading time. Each family member can read a different book or take turns narrating different parts, during reading time. This activity not only promotes family bonding but also exposes your baby to different storytelling styles and perspectives.
Bring stories to life with puppets! Use finger puppets or hand puppets to act out simple stories or engage in interactive conversations. Your baby will be captivated by the movement and voices of the puppets, fostering their imagination and creativity.
Engaging your baby in literacy activities from an early age lays the foundation for a lifelong love of reading and learning. These interactive and enjoyable activities are designed to stimulate your baby’s language development, cognitive skills, and imagination. Remember, it’s not just about the words on the page — it’s about the joy, connection and shared moments that will shape your baby’s literacy journey. So, grab a book, unleash your creativity and embark on this exciting adventure together!
