e’re well into the new year now and, I have to admit, I’m finding the resolution to finally get fit is really challenging my willpower. Cue a little shopping trip in the hope some new gym gear will inspire. If you’re having the same problem check out the second feature in our ongoing wellness campaign where you’ll find our pick of the latest workout wear to kick up your motivation. One woman who’s not short of get up and go is our cover girl Anke Brandt. Not content with holding the world record for the longest distance kitesurfed by a female, she’s about to challenge herself again by kiting from Bahrain to Dubai. You can read about her preparations and motivation in our exclusive interview. Also this month, Behnaz Sanjana chatted to Enas Fardan about a great initiative to help victims of domestic violence – a cause we’re always happy to promote. Our fashion pages, as always, bring you a selection of what’s new in the market and the continuing trend for see-through clothing makes those resolutions even more important! With awards season in full swing in the film industry, Ankita Mamgain uses the travel pages to take you on a cinematic journey to some of the world’s top film festivals. She’s also responsible for our Valentine’s dining round-up. Believe me, this girl knows all the hottest deals. Meanwhile, in parenting, Ghada Salem is offering something for nothing in the shape of apps to help your youngsters learn – maybe those phones and tablets aren’t such a bad thing after all. Enjoy!

This month’s wish list was going to be all about fitness. However, with the passing of an icon, the first artist I saw live back in 19**, ooh, an awfully long time ago, I’m moved to say my one big want this month is a copy of David Bowie’s Black Star on vinyl. That aside, I’ll settle for a pair of funky new trainers and some roller blades – '80s disco chic here I come.

PARENTING Just their Imagination

Whether it is to slim down or fine tune the body’s engine, your new year’s health related resolutions could be fulfilled by the age old philosophy of yoga, finds Behnaz Sanjana.

I

t probably happens every time. The festivities of the season go on to become unsightly bulges and paunches that seem to refuse to leave your body, like little reminders of all your indiscriminate indulgences. So between despair (will I ever be able to wear that little black dress again?) and lofty resolutions that eventually lose fizz (I will trudge to the gym five times a week), there’s yoga. Yoga is a Sanskrit word, derived from the word yuj, which, in contemporary terms, is interpreted as ‘union’. Its primary purpose is to unite the mind, body, and spirit. Celebrities swear by the power of the practice – several of them attribute their svelte figures and their ability to cope with life’s upheavals to yoga. It’s a misconception that this approach for a healthy mind and body is only for flexible folks. Given time and consistency, your body will surprise you. We spoke to Master Yogi and founder of the acclaimed holistic centre Namaste Bahrain, Weam Zabar, to shoot down your apprehensions.

Letter

SO, WHY YOGA? Weam says that yoga is a healing practice. “It doesn't only look at muscles. It works

The rewards from regular practice are manifold in comparison to the time and resources spent with organs, bones, joints, energy, mental wellbeing, emotional health, releasing fear, finding balance and living a more skillful and meaningful life.” The rewards from regular practice are manifold in comparison to the time and resources spent. WHAT’S YOUR STYLE? Yoga as a practice has developed and evolved over the decades. If you are baffled by all the various styles of yoga there are, Weam puts it in a nutshell: “There are more styles of yoga than those that moved to the West. In the West, the main style that is normally

We might not have access to the Fountain of Youth, but what we do have are innumerable products and treatments containing the same promise. WTM takes a closer look at skin-aging and ways that can actually slow it down. “You are never too old to become younger!”

referred to is Hatha Yoga, which involves the physical effort of Asanas (poses). Hatha Yoga is the branch from which many styles of yoga [Ashtanga, Vinyassa, power, yin, Bikram, Iyengar etc] have emerged.” She says there are also other schools of yoga that work towards the same goal: union of the mind, body and soul. Karma Yoga, for example, is based on selfless service, Bhakti Yoga is

Om Sweet Om I have always treated January as a ‘reset button’. December is when I usually lose control and I look at the start of the new year as the time to regain balance. This year is no different, apart from one addition – along with being disciplined in most areas – I am also going to try to be very ‘Zen’ this year. Behnaz Sanjana’s wellbeing article could not have come at a better time. I have started with ‘baby steps’ towards yoga, and I am so far just learning to concentrate and do some breathing exercises, but hopefully in a month or two will proceed towards more sophisticated asanas. The innumerable benefits of this ancient practice are no secret and I really hope I am able to attain the ultimate ‘union’ of mind, body and spirit. Dana. 40

Reversing the Clock This is perhaps the eternal and the most elusive quest, and it’s true skin care companies are making millions of our insecurities. Most products are intended to show Reversing the Clock little to zero results yet we go and buy them religiously. So thank you so much for sharing the information about what DOES work. I read more about this online and, yes, apart from retinoids and certain solutions that the dermatologist can provide, there is much under the sun that’s helping us look younger. And I was shocked to see the incredible price difference when I went and bought a topical retanoid from a pharmacy as compared to the huge amounts I’ve spent on anti-aging creams. I do feel grossly cheated. But thank you for writing about this and also sharing other valuable information about skin care as well. Tamara. BEAUTY | review

Our Big Fitness Om Swee t Om Campaign

n the past few decades alone, the market for anti-aging products and services has grown into a giant global industry, the value of which is expected to reach USD191.7 billion by the end of 2019. This figure includes money spent on anti-aging cosmetics, plastic surgery and dermatology, and aspects of traditional medicine, such as anti-aging disease management. The number of botulinum toxin (BOTOX) treatments has risen up to 700 per cent in the USA alone since 2000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. With increasingly stressful lives which see us battling deadlines, performance ratings, fast food, chronic pollution and sleep deprivation, the aging process seems to be starting earlier and at an accelerated pace. that claim to be elixirs of youth, but take a moment to understand what makes some of us look younger, despite our age. Genetics has a major role to play but beyond that a lot lies in your own hands, in terms of how much care you take of yourself to stall fine lines and wrinkles. Yes, the operative word is ‘stall’ because aging is inevitable – It. Will. Happen! As we grow older the production of collagen and elastin, which are responsible for maintaining skin’s integrity and tone, decreases. Workout Vacations When I first looked at the title of this piece in last month’s issue, I thought to myself ‘why on earth would anyone want The Workout Vacation to work out on their holiday?’ – for me it’s usually all about lazing by the pool and recovering from my hectic career and family life. However, reading Ankita Mamgain’s suggestions, she actually managed to make the idea of an active holiday sound inviting. I’m not sure I’d go so far as the Hawaiian boot camp break but I have checked out the idea of hiking and biking in Africa and I might just give it a go this year as long as there’s some serious pampering at the end. We all need some well-deserved R&R sometimes and one of the best ways to recharge your batteries can be by testing the limits of your strength and stamina. Ankita Mamgain takes you to some amazing destinations that cater to both mind and body.

hat could be a better way to jolt us out of our excessively sedentary lifestyles than a vacation? But if you’re thinking 15 days of soaking up the sun while playing with the tiny umbrella on you cocktail glass, eating hamburgers for breakfast and becoming the (not-so) proud owner of a newly acquired ‘beverage’ belly – think again. What if you could return home with six-pack abs, a new personal running record and an energised mind, all along with a camera full of exotic pictures?

A number of companies are offering fitness or workout vacations, which are a bit different from a wellness break at a luxury spa resort. This experience is all about action and the best part is, it allows you to discover some of the most picturesque, diverse and interesting locations around the world. Whether you’re into running, cycling, skiing, snowboarding, CrossFit, horse riding, golf, yoga or something that calls for even more adrenaline pumping through your veins, if you’re taking some time off this new year, how about coming back a new you? Fitness Trends I’d like to begin with admitting that I am not much of a fitness buff , but your January issue has really got me thinking about it. I loved Liz O’Reilly’s piece on new practices that have entered or are about to be introduced in Bahrain along with the adjoining page on 2016’s fitness trends.. It did make someone like me, who’s not motivated to work out at all, want to look up the things mentioned. So thank you for sharing such interesting information. I am seriously considering taking up Anti-gravity Yoga and also looking forward to picking up healthy foods next time I’m at the supermarket. Amina.

Heritage Coffees

Each year, Nespresso coffee experts seek out Limited Edition coffees to surprise and delight coffee aficionados from around the globe and these are now available in Bahrain.

T

his year the company looked to the unique coffee growing communities of Lake Kivu, Rwanda, and Chiapas, Mexico, to develop two exceptional new Limited Edition coffees, born in very different communities but united by devotion and expertise. Celebrating the dedication to coffee cultivation in each community, the Limited Editions both have names meaning ‘heart’ in their respective native languages – UMUTIMA wa Lake Kivu and TANIM de Chiapas. Synonymous with quality and coffee expertise, Nespresso has opted to pay tribute to these two small but highly knowledgeable and motivated coffee growing communities – one utilising contemporary post-harvest techniques, the other using traditional methods passed down through the generations. Nespresso has paired the dedication that the farmers have for growing high-quality coffee with its own firmly established expertise in roasting and grinding

UMUTIMA wa Lake Kivu is a refreshing union of fluid texture with bright, juicy fruit notes, enhanced by a delicate aftertaste. Best enjoyed as an espresso or lungo, its intensity level is six. TANIM de Chiapas is a sweet harmony of a silky-smooth texture and bready aromas with delicious nutty notes. It is best enjoyed as either ristretto or espresso and has an intensity level of seven. Both UMUTIMA wa Lake Kivu and TANIM de Chiapas work in perfect harmony with milk, with the Nespresso experts recommending that they are enjoyed as a cappuccino, a latte macchiato or simply with a dash of milk. WARDROBE ALERT Winter wear is leaving the stores’ racks and this is a great time to find good deals. Look for items worth investing in, such as timeless jackets and trends that will keep appearing in spring and summer.

SPARKLE ON!

Shiny beads and metallic fabric will remain the best choice for evening dress codes. A glitzy top or dress is a must-have item to keep in your wardrobe. This Mango top can be paired with your favourite jeans or with a pencil skirt for extra glamour. Just be careful not to overdo it; if you pick a shimmery dress, keep the accessories neutral or with a matte finish.

LINGERIE EFFECT

Usually relegated to the bedroom, underclothes inspired the winter collections and took prime space in many looks. The trend just gets stronger for the new season. Spaghetti strap tops in silk and lace are easy to wear for a sexy vibe. Tommy Hilfiger embraced the idea and paired it with another piece that will be seen during in the new collections: culottes. The short trousers, or long shorts, are another item to bet on!

REPTILE TREND

Snakeskin print is one of the hottest textures for the coming spring and summer. The cold-blooded creature is an inspiration to cool down when the mercury rises and snake print can be applied in all sorts of accessories and clothing items. Some brands painted their winter collections with reptile patterns, so look for it while shopping. Jimmy Choo is one of them, enjoy!

20

February 2016

JEAN JACKET A denim jacket is always a versatile piece, consequently a smart purchase. Its fabric is also a good choice for the transitional period when the chilly breeze is still blowing on the island. This casual item can be worn with floral dresses, skinny leather trousers and even with a jumpsuit. The American Eagle Outfitters option is a warmer version of the traditional piece.

www.womanthismonth.com

WHITE OFF

FINE FRINGES

This bleached colour is a sophisticated pick when painting suits, shirts and dresses. A white gown is not just for walking down the aisle, though it should actually be avoided at weddings if you are not the bride! Victoria Beckham showed off structured pieces in her autumn and winter collection that are a great pick for enjoying the hotter days in style.

Hanging threads have been trending for a few seasons now and it seems that spring and summer will continue the trend. Lanvin has a collection of necklaces and earrings embracing this look, which can be worn with sophisticated or casual outfits. Handbags and trimming hems are very popular choices. Hunt for flowing tassels when shopping the island’s deals.

The actress and singer rocked a retro '70s vibe in a gold sequined mesh jumpsuit from the Resort 2016 Michael Kors collection for an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live in Los Angeles. It’s an unforgiving look that screams total body confidence and displayed the 46-year-old’s toned arms and enviable physique to perfection.

AMBER HEARD

The star channelled oldstyle Hollywood glamour at the Golden Globes in a Gucci sienna and nude silk tulle multi-layered gown featuring silk flowers and delicate beading along the neck and down the open back. The piece featured a dramatic train and she topped it off with a red lip for a truly showstealing look.

KACY HILL

The ever-glum actress, who is brand ambassador for Chanel, wore the label top to toe at the National Board of Review Gala in New York. Sporting an off-white embellished organza dress from the Paris in Rome 2015/16 collection as well as Chanel shoes, watch and even make-up she showcased a coming trend for girly simplicity with smoky eyes adding a slightly rock star edge.

The Academy Award and Golden Globe winner showed how to do Gothic with style at the 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala wearing a Lanvin a black satin strapless cocktail dress with black lace bottom trim detail from the Été 2016 collection. Pared back hair and make-up allowed the frock’s detailing to do the talking.

This girl is on fire right now and cannot put a foot wrong. She graced the red carpet at the Golden Globes in a stunning red Dior Haute Couture gown, with strategic cut-outs to reveal flashes of flesh adding a daring edge to the otherwise conservative cut. Topping off the look with more than 156 carats of Chopard diamonds, Lawrence, who went on to win the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Joy, was really flexing her star power.

The American singer/ songwriter played to her gorgeous red hair in a Gucci Spring Summer 2016 iridescent green floral brocade, peak lapel, singlebreasted suit with a blue and white cotton longsleeve ruffle front blouse at the W Magazine & Dom Perignon 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards party. A brave choice but the quirky musician pulled it off.

PEOPLE | interview

Fly the Waves As record-breaking kitesurfer Anke Brandt prepares for her latest challenge – a world record kitesurf from Bahrain to Dubai – WTM caught up with the athlete to find out what motivates her and more.

WTM: How did you get involved in kitesurfing? AB: I saw a kitesurfer in New Zealand in 2007 and instantly liked the idea of it, as I sailed since I was 10 years old. In 2009 I finally took a course and learned to kitesurf. But it was only in 2010, when I moved to Bahrain, that I learned to properly ride and jump. So you can definitely say I learned and fell in love with kitesurfing in Bahrain.

28

Name: Anke Christine Brandt Age: 32 Nationality: German Lives: Amwaj Islands Record held: Longest distance kitesurfed by a female – 250km around Bahrain

You have previously set a record by surfing around the island, how much preparation did it take and how hard was it? As I kitesurf as much as possible, I always have a good level of fitness. Three months before the attempt, I focused on a training and food plan, this involved exercising five times a week and was a mix of weight training, cardio, yoga and, of course, kitesurfing. I enjoy being fit and was always very involved in sports activities so it was fun but it is not always easy to fit in all the exercise with a full workday and social activities. You have to set your priorities to succeed, for sure. To be able to do this is great to train with friends.

Whatever you do I think there will be always a point when you think you can’t go further and want to give up. In these moments it is very important that you have close friends and family who support you and who you can talk to. This helped me always to get back on track and helped me to regain trust in what I am doing.

Were there any points at which you wanted to give up and, if so, what kept you going?

You now plan to kite surf from Bahrain to Dubai. What made you decide on this

February 2016

challenge? The idea of Kitesurf Arabia came from a sailing competition. This made me want to go the distance by kite as it’s proof that the wind can carry you along all the way from Bahrain to Dubai. This is my dream. It is a difficult task to go all the way as we need a boat that can go the entire distance to the UAE, but it will be hopefully a recordbreaking mission. I have been kitesurfing many times in www.womanthismonth.com

the UAE and participated in one of my first competitions there, achieving my first podiums, so I do feel a connection to the UAE next to Bahrain. Is it a dangerous thing to undertake and what is the distance? It is a mission you have to prepare for. It has risk factors, which can be managed well in advance with appropriate risk management. The wind and weather, for example, can be a challenge and always remain a factor of uncertainty. Even if the weather and wind look steady and good to go, you can pass through areas where the unexpected can happen. Last time the wind picked up without any warning and within minutes I got pulled downwind towards Qatar. The team must react fast in these situations. Also, possible night kiting is a big challenge as it will be very hard to see where you are going and to read the wind and the waves. If the water is smooth and the waves are more or less regular, it should be OK, but you never know. The distance is expected to be around 600km and a lot can happen on the way.

How long do you expect it to take? We expect the journey to take 14 to 18 hours from start to finish, depending on the wind and routing we have to take. How will you be supported on the journey? We are currently searching for the right support boat to follow me all the way. This is the biggest obstacle to overcome right now as we need a boat that can keep up with the speed in the open water and can carry enough fuel to go all the way. In addition it must be able to approach the land at any given time in case of emergency and, best case, have an additional small safety boat. On the boat will be a camera team, a doctor and a team that can support with the kite and board if needed. If you manage to complete this journey, what’s next?

I’m not sure what will be next. I am sure this will not be my last kite mission as it is a lot of fun. But it takes preparation and is also very costly and it is always a challenge to find the funds to pay the bills for all the safety and preparation necessary. As soon as there is something set in stone, your readers will be the first to know! Anything else you would like to add? We are doing this mission for Wings for Life spinal cord injury charity and are collecting donations from now onward. All the collected money will go to Wings for Life and people can donate at https://www.justgiving.com/ kitesurfarabia/ We are also happy to hear from any company interested in sponsoring the mission and connecting their brand to a world record! Mail us at Kitebeyond@gmail.com

Will it be another world record? Yes, we are aiming to break the current record we set in 2014 by circumnavigating Bahrain. How are you training and preparing for the journey? I have been training since January. This is a mix of weight training in the gym, yoga to keep me flexible and, of course, kitesurfing. I have been in South Africa lately to kick off particularly the kite training and kick off an intensive six-days-a-week training plan until the day of the departure. www.womanthismonth.com

For a Better Tomorrow

The young minds who are the driving force of Naseem, a social initiative of the Bahraini Youth Forum Society (BYFS), are striving towards a progressive society. Behnaz Sanjana caught up with Enas Fardan, head of Naseem, to learn more.

N

aseem is a voluntary initiative of BYFS providing emotional support to disadvantaged groups. Its members engage in community service through the use of social networks and multimedia channels, things that are integral in the lives of youth today. Through public events, short films, music videos, paintings, photography, caricatures and more, members shed light on sections of society that need to be heard. The latest project, now under way, in cooperation with Tafawuq Center for Women and Gender, is targeted at abused women in Bahrain. “A study in 2014 by the World Health Organisation showed that, on average, 30 per cent of women who have been in a relationship report that they have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence by their partner,” says Enas. “An earlier UN study showed that 70 per cent of women around the world experience at least one type of violence in their lives.” Based on these alarming statistics, BYFS has started an online survey to record the numbers of abused women in Bahrain. “We have obtained a sample of 294 abused women within Bahrain who participated voluntarily in the online survey. It shows that 38 per cent are aged 21 to 30 years and another 38 per cent from 31 to 40 years. The average age of the sample is 33 years,” says Enas. The survey showed that more than half the women are graduates and nearly half are employed, but they still suffered various forms of domestic abuse, mainly at the hands of their husbands. There are also cases where fathers, brothers and uncles have been abusive.

The making of Malak

February 2016

Above and below: Awareness raising events

Enas says: “Most of the women reported various kinds of abuse. The most common was emotional abuse, followed by verbal, physical, economic and, finally, sexual abuse.” The primary objectives of the project are to make society aware of the problem, make women aware of their rights and also to spread awareness of Bahrain’s newlyissued law of Protection from Domestic Violence, enacted in August 2015. The We Respect Her project is being implemented on two fronts: direct awareness and awareness through art. Direct awareness will be through a report collated from the online survey, awareness sessions in schools and universities about domestic violence and protective laws and, lastly, through a bilingual booklet listing centres for help. A walkathon and art exhibition held in support of the project garnered huge crowds.

Awareness through art will take place with works of photography, sketches and caricatures, all depicting the plight of victims of abuse. “Malak is a short film that touches upon the negative impact that domestic violence has on children. We have produced two songs, one of which has a video clip. We have also launched an art competition where artists from Bahrain can participate in drawing and painting artworks that talk about the impact of domestic violence against women on the whole family and society,” says Enas. Emphasising the importance of the issue, she says: “Women make up half of the community; they give birth and raise the other half. The more we empower the woman, socially, economically and politically, the more developed our society will become. The impact of domestic abuse, unfortunately, does not stop at harming the woman’s physical and mental health. Children from such backgrounds will interact with the community, thereby spreading the negative impact to the whole community.” Enas thinks there are two powerful weapons to address this complex problem; awareness and strong laws. “Women need to be aware of their rights and duties within the family and marriage. The second approach should be educating the community on the negative impact of domestic violence against women on the community as a whole, on gender equality aspects and the importance of respecting and supporting women for community development. On the other hand, we need strong laws that protect women from domestic violence that include legal consequences for the person who commits such violent acts.” www.womanthismonth.com

BRING ON THE SUPERFOODS – OR NOT!

Over the past few years we’ve been bombarded with lists of, so called, superfoods whose health benefits have been extolled. But what is a superfood and what’s next on the list? In the second part of our three-month fitness focus, Liz O’Reilly itakes a look at the store cupboard must-haves for 2016.

T

he term superfood, a bit like supermodel, is bandied about quite regularly but what exactly are superfoods? According to livescience. com, they are foods, mostly plantbased but also some dairy and fish, thought to be nutritionally dense, nutrient rich and, thus, considered to be beneficial to health. In the past few years we’ve been instructed to eat avocados, blueberries and virtually everything coconut, whether we’re drinking the water, eating the flesh, spooning the oil into our food or rubbing it onto our skin and hair. And, to be honest, the idea that any of these things would be good for us is not all that suprising. But sometimes new additions to the list come as a bit of a shock such as black pudding, the much-loved British blood sausage, without which no ‘Full English’ would be complete. Apparently the humble sausage is rich in protein, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc as well as being practically carb free. It’s just typical that the one ‘healthy’ ingredient on that oh-so-sinful breakfast plate is the one I usually leave on the side, but maybe in the future I’ll try and stomach just a little of the rich pud for its health benefits. And then there’s bone broth! Yep, sounds pretty unpleasant but some experts swear

www.womanthismonth.com

by it for its combination of protein, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sodium and potassium as well as collagen and gelatin – both of which are lauded by anti-aging experts. You can make it by simmering bones, veggies and herbs for six to 12 hours. Some drink it for breakfast to get the day off to a healthy start but if you haven’t got the stomach for that, try using it as the base for a soup. The UK’s Glamour magazine predicts that 2016 will be the year of the Brussels sprout. These little green bundles of goodness are packed with vitamin B and glucosinolates that protect our DNA from damage, as well as vitamin K, vitamin C, folic acid, calcium and magnesium. Brussels are a bit like Marmite, they provoke a strong reaction and people seem to either love them or hate them. I’m a big fan and, for anyone who’s not keen, I’d say try them sautéed with a bit of bacon and onion – yum.

Another rather odd one is Betonite Clay. Yes, you read that right, some sources are now suggesting we should eat mud (though, to be fair, some have been consuming diatomaceous earth for years). According to bodyandsoul.com.au the clay is praised for its cleansing and detoxifying qualities, it’s “highly absorbent, negatively charged and beneficial both internally and externally”. However, made from volcanic ash, there are those who caution against its use claiming mineral levels could be potentially toxic. And that brings us to an important consideration when looking at superfoods. There is no official classification for these trends; they’re hardly, if at all, recognised by nutritionists and, a bit like fad diets, they are often not all they’re cracked up to be. At the end of the day, if you eat a balanced diet, with a few treats along the way, take some exercise and get enough sleep and hydration, you’ll be doing fine.

PREVENTION BETTER THAN CURE Asthma is a commonly occurring disease that affects many. Prevention and long-term control are the key to tackling attacks.

A

sthma is a disease that affects the tubes carrying air in and out of the lungs. With asthma, the airways narrow, swell and produce excess mucus, which can cause wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and breathing difficulty – especially early in the morning and at night. “It is not yet clear why some people get asthma and others do not, but it is most likely due to a combination of environmental and genetic [inherited] factors,” says Royal Bahrain Hospital’s pulmonology specialist Dr Maria Teresa Catacutan. “Asthma triggers differ from one individual to another. Common triggers include house dust mites, animal fur, pollen, tobacco smoke, exercise, cold air and chest infections.” Symptoms are a minor nuisance for some, but a major problem for others, interfering with their daily activities. In life-threatening asthma attacks, the airways can close so much that your vital organs do not get enough

Dr Maria Teresa Catacutan

oxygen; which could lead to death. Unfortunately, asthma cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be controlled. Treatment includes avoiding asthma triggers, using longterm control medications to prevent flare-ups and using a quick-relief inhaler to control symptoms once they start.

Diagnosing asthma can be difficult and, to rule out other possible conditions, your doctor will perform a physical examination and take your medical history. You may also need to undergo lung function tests. Determining the severity of your asthma will help your doctor choose the best treatment for you. “Treatment usually involves learning to recognise your triggers and taking steps to avoid them,” says Dr Catacutan. “Use of asthma medications will keep symptoms under control. In case of an asthma attack, you may need to use a quick-relief inhaler such as salbutamol or albuterol.” Work with your doctor to create an asthma action plan for proper management and control of asthma. LET’S MOVE, BABY

Obstetrics and gynaecology specialist Dr Vandana Kumar explains the benefits of exercise both in pregnancy and postpartum.

P

regnancy might seem like a good time to relax and put your feet up but it's important to be active and keep moving. If done correctly, exercise does wonders during pregnancy. Becoming active and exercising at least 30 minutes most days can benefit your health during pregnancy in multiple ways. Exercise can help reduce backaches, constipation, bloating and swelling. It may also help prevent or treat high blood sugar. Regular activity increases energy, improves mood and posture and promotes muscle tone, strength and endurance. It even helps you sleep better. The more active and fit you are during pregnancy, the easier you will find adapting to your changing body shape and weight gain. It will enhance your ability to cope with labour and to get back into shape after childbirth. Initiation of pelvic floor exercises in the immediate postpartum period may also reduce the risk of future urinary incontinence. Certain sports are safe during pregnancy, even for beginners, such as walking, swimming and aquanatal classes. Low impact aerobics and pilates are a good way to keep your heart and lungs strong. Reasonable goals of aerobics in pregnancy should be to maintain a good fitness level throughout the term without trying to reach

36

February 2016

peak fitness. Yoga induces flexibility and helps breath control and pain management. Also, moderate exercise during lactation does not affect the quantity or composition of breast milk or impact infant growth. Activities in which there is a high risk of falling such as gymnastics, water skiing, and horseback riding as well as racquet sports, should be avoided. Pregnant women should not engage in contact sports such as hockey, basketball and soccer. And scuba diving can put your baby at risk of decompression sickness. Exercise is contraindicated if you have high blood pressure, low placenta, twins or triplets, ruptured membranes, preterm labour, an incompetent cervix, bleeding at any stage or any serious medical problems in present and past pregnancies. It is also prudent to contact your obstetrician before attempting exercises.

Dr Vandana Kumar

Adequate hydration and proper ventilation are important to prevent the possible effects of overheating. Always warm up before exercising and cool down afterwards. The intensity, duration and frequency of exercise should start at a level that does not result in pain, shortness of breath or excessive fatigue. Exercises performed in the supine position are inadvisable after the first trimester, as are prolonged periods of motionless standing. Whether you were active before pregnancy or not, it is wise to start some sort of moderate activity regularly to keep fit in pregnancy and afterwards. Call BSH on 17 812-000. www.womanthismonth.com

Playing Safe Many of us resort to a favourite sport to pack in some fun and a cardio-like workout. For a safe game or workout, Behnaz Sanjana looks at how to dodge and tackle sports injuries.

A

round of tennis, golf or basketball or even just cycling by the beach after a long day at work can be a great stressbuster. Being active goes a long way towards keeping your circulation from getting sluggish, your ticker healthy and your bones in top condition. Not to mention the rush of endorphins that puts you on a happy high and the sense of achievement and heathy competition that come with it. This holds true for children as well. But, as with all things in life, this has a flip side to it – injuries. Dr Maik Priester, orthopaedic consultant at the German Orthopaedic Hospital, specialises in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He tells us how we can continue playing and keeping healthy without the danger of injury. “Sports injuries are injuries related to playing sports or exercising. Sometimes they happen when people are not fit enough for the activity they choose or did not warm up properly before playing. Sometimes they happen even to the fittest of athletes due to trauma or interaction with other players,” says Dr Priester. Sports injuries vary in forms and grades of severity such as sprains and strains, muscle tears, dislocations and fractures. They can be

40

February 2016

Sports injuries vary in forms and grades of severety; like sprains and strains, muscle tears, dislocations and fractures classified as acute or chronic. An acute injury happens suddenly while playing sports; it is usually associated with a traumatic event. A chronic injury can also be defined as an overuse injury. It normally develops slowly, is persistent and lasts for a long time. The pain is less compared to an acute injury – one of the reasons it is often ignnored. Dr Priester warns that, over time, the symptoms build up to a point where they could restrict a normal lifestyle. So what can a sports enthusiast do to avoid injuries? “Prevention is an important part of

sports medicine. The risk of getting injured can be reduced by warming up properly before doing exercises,” says the doctor. He also goes on to warn that one must not push the body beyond its current fitness level. Incorporating strength training and stretching into your exercise programme helps to prevent injury. Adequate hydration maintains health and minimises muscle www.womanthismonth.com

Prevention is an important part of sports medicine. The risk of getting injured can be reduced by warming up properly before doing exercises cramps. It is also important to wear properly fitted protective equipment, including helmets, pads, shoes and mouth guards whenever necessary. Many sports experts also recommend playing different sports or different positions in your game throughout the year. Taking a break from the sport helps muscles to recover from use and prevent overuse injuries. Resting well and taking good care of any injuries, however minor, can really help you to keep at your game. Dr Priester advocates learning the correct techniques of your sport and seeking help from a qualified coach to improve them. Like a warm-up, a proper cool-down routine is as important to help the body recover from rigorous activity. But some things are beyond anyone’s control

www.womanthismonth.com

and, if you’ve had a mishap while playing, what do you do? Dr Priester suggests that we always remember RICE – rest, ice, compression and elevation. Rest the injured body area. Cool it with ice or cold packs for 15-20 minutes, three to four times per day to reduce pain and swelling. Wrap the injured area with an elastic bandage to apply compression to decrease swelling. Elevate the sore area on a pillow above the level of your heart to help minimise swelling. These are the guidelines for immediately attending to simple injuries on the field or at the gym. However, if the injury seems more serious, or if symptoms get worse, it’s paramount to seek treatment from a doctor.

“The treatment of sports injuries varies depending on how severe the injury is and what body part is affected. Applying the RICE method is a good start. In general, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [like diclofenac or ibuprofen] help to reduce pain and inflammation," says the doctor. “Sometimes immobilisation of a joint with a cast or special brace is necessary for a short period of time. Physiotherapy is very helpful to recover from a sports injury and to get you back to normal life. Depending on the injury, special injections [for example painkillers, cortisone or others] have great benefits. In severe cases even surgery might be required.” It is important that you are comfortable with the treatment prescribed by your doctor. It’s best to discuss all your options with him or her, get second opinions and go ahead with what suits you best, of course in close collaboration with your treating doctor. Today, women are excelling in sports like never before. But our bodies are more prone to injury due to anatomic and genetic differences in biomechanics, hormones, musculature, flexibility, bone structure, proportion of lean to fat tissue and alignment, Dr Priester tells us. “For example, women are up to six times more likely to suffer from overstretching or tearing of the knee ligament than men. But don’t get me wrong. Engaging in sports has a lot of benefits. It increases agility and strength, burns calories, improves mood and confidence; just to name a few. All women are encouraged to stay active regardless of age.”

showcase ASGHARALI

SHINING, SHIMMERING, SPLENDID After almost a century of creating fine fragrances, this company now introduces a unique skin product to complement its line.

A

sgharali has a long history as a fine fragrance house. it is no surprise that the latest offering for the beauty market consists of an exceptional glitter gel which combines the scents for which the brand is known in a gel texture to nourish the skin deep within, leaving it silky soft and gleaming. Founded in 1924, in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the company’s aim has always been to make life fragrantly beautiful through continuous research and development in blending natural essences and oils. Today, it produces extravagant varieties of Oriental and Western perfumes, oils, oudh, bakhoor, a skin series, toiletries, accessories and gift items. This year, Asgharali introduces a new additional line to its skin series that will appeal not only to the olfactory senses but also the visual and tactile ones. The new concept of glitter gel combines the scent of inspired classic best-selling perfumes Samia, Noor al Khaleej and Raneen with a rich, yet light gel which nourishes the skin from morning to night in just one application leaving it silky smooth and moisture perfect with a surprise of shimmer. The effect is extra luminous and glowing, reminiscent of sparkling summer days and fun girls’ nights. The Samia glitter gel carries the beautiful fragrance of floral and spicy amber, with its top notes of saffron, cardamom and pepper, heart notes that give it the lasting smell of rose, violet, frankincense and Ciste Labdanum and a finishing touch in its base notes of dry amber, karanal and amber. Raneen glitter gel has a unique fragrance combination of accords in floral chypre gourmond, which

create a mysterious effect, a contrasting play upon heat and cold and the freshness of fruity and floral combinations of patchouli and soft amber.

Noor al Khaleej glitter gel is built on making you salivate to the sensation of desserts with its sweet Oriental white floral gourmond fragrance. The scent has sweet notes of apple, plum and cherry and a floral sensation of tiare, frangipani and white flowers added to the gourmand qualities that tickle the nose from the sugar and spice of vanilla, cedar wood and lustrous amber. These glitter gels, consisting of tiny, barely detectable gold coloured micro sparkles, can give any women skin glamour to feel fashionable. And not only can it be used on the skin, it can be applied to the hair as well just like a regular hair gel for a little shine which is guaranteed to get people talking. With these new products, Asgharali is once again gratified by its achievements in winning the hearts of its consumers worldwide with its novelty and luxury products. Over the years the company has established its footprint in the beauty market and today has more than 100 retail and franchise outlets and over 40 distributors worldwide in regions from Eastern Europe to South America.

BROWSE THE BROWS!

The shape of your eyebrows can drastically change the shape of your face. Here are a few tips to help you achieve the best results.

T

he first step when it comes to choosing the right eyebrow shape is to determine your face shape. Joz Salon & Spa explains the various shapes and says that knowing yours is the first step to creating a beautiful look that’s just right for you. Face shapes include oval, round, long, square, heart and diamond. To find yours, start by pulling your hair back and, with no makeup on, look closely in the mirror. The features to pay attention to are: forehead, cheekbones, jawline, how your face tapers towards your chin, etc. DETERMINING FACE SHAPE Measure the length of your face with a ruler (as seen in the image, the total length of the face is eight inches). Divide the total length by three (in this case, eight divided by three is 2.67 or 2 and 2/3). Measure the length from the bottom of your

Oblong www.womanthismonth.com

Diamond

nose to the bottom of your chin (in this case, 2 and 1/3 inches). If the last number (the 2 1/3 number) is larger than the first divided number (the 2 2/3), then chances are you have a long face. If the last number is less than the first divided number, then you might have a round face. If the last number is equal to the first divided number, then you probably have an oval face. FIND THE BEST BROW SHAPE FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE Oval is considered the ideal face shape. The brows play no role in making the face appear 'more oval', as it already is.

Square

Heart

Triangle

The perfect eyebrow shape is widely considered to be the soft-angled type. This shape goes straight up and then gently curves round at the top and down. According to the salon, the majority of women known for their beauty, with an oval face shape, have had a softangled eyebrow shape. The goal for a round face shape is to make it appear 'less round' by making it appear longer. Apply lines that go more up and down the face. This helps draw the eye in the same manner and lengthens the face. Create as high an arched brow as you can. Look for a brow shape that follows a straight line to the peak of the brow and creates more vertical lines. Stay away from a rounded brow shape. This only accentuates a round face even further. Many customers prefer the soft angled look. Consider also angled brow shapes and higher arches. For those with a heart face shape, soften your look with curves and create a beautiful heart shape using the point of your chin as the bottom and the brows as the top of the heart. Apply rounded brows – the curve of the brow is soft, feminine and attractive and also creates the heart-like look of the face. A low-arch rounded brow creates a natural look, while a high arched brow can add length to a shorter heart-shaped face or create a dramatic look. Soften the angles in your diamond face shape and make the widest portion of the face appear 'less wide'. The curved brow shape does this. Notice that many beautiful celebrities who have a diamond-shaped shape also have curved brows. A second popular choice is the round brow stencils, also suggested for the heart face shape. Healing Strokes

If you have never been on a massage table before or you do not remember the last time you were, it’s time to make yourself an appointment for ultimate rejuvenation. Behnaz Sanjana rolls out the fundamentals for you.

I

n this day and age, a spa day is considered a mini getaway and there are women who swear by regular massage sessions. Yet, there are the skeptics who fail to understand the hype. Well, studies have shown that getting a regular massage is not all hedonism. Besides letting you unwind and indulge, a massage can do much more for your body. It relaxes the muscles and eases away pockets of pain. Along with calming the nervous system and promoting healthy sleep (surely many of us have dozed off on the massage table), a massage can also boost immunity by increasing the number of white blood cells. Regular massage has been shown to curb tension headaches and migraines, as well as PMS. A little technique applied in the correct places can also brighten up lacklustre complexion and hair. There is also evidence

46

February 2016

that massage can relieve pain, fatigue, anxiety, nausea and depression in patients undergoing cancer treatment. When it comes to which type of massage to choose from, pick the one that sounds best suited to you. Swedish Massage – This is the most common full-body massage and is a great choice for someone who is new to the massage bandwagon. Oil is used to facilitate smooth, gliding strokes all over the body that relax the joints and muscles. Deep Tissue Massage – The therapist will work on the same lines as Swedish massage but will target the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and connective tissue. The pressure will be intense to release muscle www.womanthismonth.com

As I drove to Joz Salon & Spa at the Dragon Hotel in Amwaj, I anticipated an hour of quiet metime; a luxury that I usually cannot afford. Little did I know that it would be 90 minutes of pure bliss. Monalisa, my trained masseuse, led me to a tranquil treatment room and started preparing for my hot stone massage. As someone who is always cold, the warmth of the heated massage table was extremely comforting. Monalisa started with gently but firmly applying pressure on key points of my body

(covered with a warm, toasty towel), to enhance blood circulation. Her deft pulling and stretching made my joints and back 'crack' making me let go and breathe easy. Then came the Swedish massage; the prelude to the hot stone therapy. Monalisa’s skilful effleurage with lavenderscented oil worked at releasing tension and gently breaking up my muscle knots, concentrating specifically on my aching shoulders which are usually hunched over the keyboard or the steering wheel. Just as I was about to slip into semiconsciousness, smooth,

were placed strategically along my back, hips and calves and moved around in a definite pattern. I could feel the heat penetrate my muscles and ease out the stress. While the stones rested on my back, Monalisa rubbed the hot stones down my legs and arms, which was very soothing indeed. To end my session, she expertly stretched my limbs for some final 'seventh heaven' feeling.

black, hot stones were put to work on my back, shoulders, soles and palms. The stones, some round and others oval,

tension or knots. Aromatherapy Massage – When the massage oil is blended with essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, lemongrass, etc. it helps to alleviate pain and lift your mood. Hot Stone Massage – Smooth-surfaced stones are heated in water and then placed over the body. The heat from the stones warms up the muscles and is very relaxing. This technique however, requires a lot of skill. Sports Massage – This was developed for athletes to quickly rid themselves of physical stress. Athletes take it before, during and after a competition. It is also good for anyone with chronic pain, injury or movement issues. Thai Massage – A traditional Thai massage is unique in that it uses passive stretching and pressure along the body’s energy lines to increase flexibility and effectively gives relief from muscle or joint tension. A Thai massage takes place fully clothed on a cotton mat on the floor. The therapist uses his or her own body to administer the massage. Shiatsu – This technique was developed in Japan and uses intense finger pressure to restore the healthy flow of energy through the body. Like its Thai counterpart, it takes place fully clothed on a cotton mat on the floor and does not need any oil to be applied to the body. Pre- and Postnatal Massage – A prenatal massage helps to reduce swelling in the arms and legs and relieve aches and www.womanthismonth.com

pains in muscles and joints, as well as anxiety and stress, especially in the last two trimesters. Only an experienced masseuse who is an expert at this type of massage should be trusted. In some cultures, a daily massage is a way to soothe a new mother and enable her to deal with the baby blues. The masseuse typically starts at the feet, making her way up the body, ending with a calming head massage. Postnatal massages help to relax sore backs, get rid of toxins and improve wellbeing and immunity by stimulating the lymph flow. They are also said to accelerate recovery from a C-section, but should be taken only after the

wound has healed. Whatever the type of massage you choose, talk to your therapist beforehand to discuss your problem areas. She should be happy to concentrate on tired feet, tense shoulders or a stiff neck. Do communicate the intensity of pressure you prefer. In any case, a massage should never feel painful. Pain means the pressure is too intense. If it uncomfortable, let the therapist know. What a massage feels like depends entirely on the skill of the therapist. Try different therapists till you find one you like and get regular massages to reap the full benefits of this ancient wellness technique. February 2016

DRESS SHOPPING FOR THE HOME

Fabrics form an integral part of any interior design. Ankita Mamgain picks up the threads on what you should consider when choosing materials for your home.

P

erhaps they're not the first thing on your list when working on home interiors but fabrics play a crucial role in unifying the feel and tone of any space. Cloth is used everywhere in the home, from carpets to upholstery to bedding and even accessories such as towels, lampshades and cushions. A great way to make your home décor come to life is by choosing fabrics that add style and texture to the overall design. Play with a variety of options to create the desired look – this could be a simple tablecloth on a large, impressive-looking dining table or it could be a throw draped across the couch. Fabricst can instantly provide a splash of colour or texture to the room. You can use them to pull together the look you’re going for or simply to accent it. When it comes to fabric, there are many selections to choose from and it may be hard to figure out which one works best for your home. Not only should you consider the fabrics used in cushion covers and curtains but also those on bigger pieces such as furniture.

48

February 2016

UPHOLSTERY Some aspects of choosing the right fabric for your furniture can seem straightforward and fairly obvious. You immediately go for

something you might find pretty, that’s comfortable to touch, is in line with your own aesthetic sensibility while complementing the overall design of the room or space and is www.womanthismonth.com

easy to maintain. Here are some other factors you might want to consider while choosing the right upholstery. Durability: Keep in mind who will be using your sofa or chair when making a decision on the fabric. If your pets will be sharing the furniture with you, consider a microfibre fabric or leather as these can withstand heavy use. Durability is also very important if the furniture is kept in a high-traffic area. Generally, woven patterns hold up longer than printed ones, as do higher thread counts and tight weaves. Whatever you choose it should approximate the style and character of the piece it is covering. Traditional fabrics look better on a traditional frame. That said, if you are one to experiment and know how to merge two very different styles, go for it. Colour: One of the most important reasons people go for fabric is the wide range of colours and patterns available. Although there is the option of changing it as frequently as you like, opt for something that you can live happily with for a while. If there are young children around, or pets, avoid light colours. Consider the colour temperature to create the right mood. Additionally, take into account whether your fabric is fade resistant especially if it will be placed in a room that gets plenty of sunlight or close to a window. Bahrain can get really humid during the summer months, so you might also want to look for something that is mildew resistant. www.womanthismonth.com

DRAPES AND CURTAINS With such a wide array of ready-made drapery available, getting a fabulous window treatment is relatively easy and quick these days. However, this abundance can often make the choice a bit of a problem as well. In terms of texture, consider the mood of the room. Opt for heavier silks or velvets for a formal space. Lighter fabrics like linen, silk and variations of these materials filter light beautifully and hang nicely, making them good choices for a sunny room. Blackout curtains in velvet, suede, tapestry and other heavy materials are excellent for blocking light and controlling room temperature. More practical and often washable options include silky rayon blends and cotton sateen. Cotton and cotton blends work with any type of decor and bring a crisp, neat feel to any space. Moving on to colour, neutral curtain colours blend easily and are less likely to fade. But

don’t be afraid to go with a pop of pattern or stripes to add some visual excitement to a room.

LINEN AND ACCESSORIES No matter how much we try to make our rooms look like hotel suites and interiors magazine pictures, the reality invariably comes down to mismatched and tired looking bedsheets, pillow covers, tablecloths, runners and napkins. However, if carefully chosen, you can keep their newness and your enthusiasm for a great-looking room going for a long time. Invest in pieces with a good thread count, you do not want something that thins outs in two washes or pills up. Higher thread count indicates softer and more comfortable linen. Wrinkle resistance makes sure that your bed

linen looks great all the time. Good finishing on the sheets will prevent skin scar or scratches. Softer finishing usually comes at a more expensive price and needs more care when it comes to washing and cleaning, but feels really good on the skin. Materials for everyday use should be easy to clean and maintain. Choose fabrics that can breathe easily like cotton, silk and their blends especially for beds. Keep a good selection of moderately priced linen for daily use and some luxurious pieces to be used sparingly. For tables, a really good way to spruce up a plain cover is to throw a bright runner over the top. February 2016

Smart Kids! Though some parents feel they’re a bad influence, Ghada Salem suggests mobile devices can also be helpful in your child’s development.

M

obile and tablet apps are a big part of children’s lives nowadays! A lot of parents complain that their kids spend extended hours using their devices to play games that we parents feel are not adding anything to their skills. We are concerned, also, that the games can affect their eyesight and limit their imagination. Having said that, it is hard to keep the kids away from technology and from using tablets and other gadgets. In my opinion moderation is the key. Let your youngsters use tablets for a certain time per week, explain the pros and cons and agree on a timetable for tablet use. You can allow extra use as a treat from time to time but always keep the tablet charger with you! This month, I ‘m sharing a few apps and websites that are actually pretty good and will help your kids excel at school. And guess what? They’re almost all free. I’ve been using these apps and websites for quite some time now, so my recommendations come from first-hand experience. APPS Duolingo I am all for teaching kids as many languages as I can. Duolingo is an amazing app that can help your little ones, and you too if you wish, to learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and English for free Mathmateer by Dan Russell-Pinson Maths can be fun! Build your very own rockets

and fly them to the stars with this app! While your rocket is floating weightlessly in space, the real fun begins! Play one of the many fun maths missions. Each has touchable objects floating in space, including stars, coins, 3D shapes and more! Kids can earn a bronze, silver or gold medal and also try to beat their own highest scores. Missions range in difficulty from even and odd numbers all the way to square roots, so kids and their parents will enjoy hours of fun while learning maths. NASA By far, this is my kids’ favourite app. It is developed by NASA and includes a huge collection of stunning images, videos, mission information, news, NASA TV and featured content. Class Dojo This app is not educational but it is a great way to get kids to set targets for themselves and evaluate their performance. In addition, you can set certain behaviours that you would like you children

www.womanthismonth.com

to develop or stop and, through the app, you can challenge them to do (or not) certain things and give them points on Class Dojo. My Story Book Creator Children can draw, use photos, record voice, type and then send their finished creations to their parents and friends . WEBSITES Oxford Owl Reading and Math Helping your child learn to read and learn to love reading is one of the greatest gifts. Xtramath A free web-based resource designed to help kids master basic math facts. Suitable for kids of five and above. IXL: This isn't a free website but I highly recommend it. The membership is about BD5 a month. It’s an immersive K-12 learning experience that provides comprehensive, standards-aligned content for maths, language, arts, science and social studies in line with the American curriculum. Barking Cough Croup can be startling for both children and parents because of the noises the child makes. It sounds like a crowing, as the sufferer breathes in, accompanied by a barking cough and hoarseness. Dr Jinan Harith Darwish explains what to look for.

C

roup is caused by a virus. Before a child gets it, he or she may have already had a runny nose, a cold, hoarseness and a higher temperature than normal. It often starts out like a normal cold followed by a harsh, barking cough which may be worse at night when the air is cooler. Croup affects the child’s voice box, windpipe and small tubes in the lungs. Swelling makes the airway narrower, so it is harder to breathe. The condition usually affects children aged from three months to five years and some get croup several times. A mild case can be treated at home. If your child has a fever, painkillers, such as paracetamol, will help to lower their temperature. You should also give lots of fluids to ensure your child remains well hydrated. Don’t give any medicine that may make the child drowsy as little ones often find it easier to breathe when they are alert. While your child is sleeping, propping them up with pillows may make it easier for them to breathe. It’s key to keep sufferers away from smoky places as smoke may aggravate their airway. Do not smoke around your child and keep a window open to circulate fresh air. Cough medicines, inhalers used to treat asthma and decongestants are of no benefit in treating croup. If the youngster is distraught, sit them upright on your lap. It will also console and reassure the child by having you there. This is

54

February 2016

imperative because if your child is crying and distressed, it may make their symptoms worse. Croup can get worse rapidly. If your child is having trouble breathing they should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible. You should visit your paediatrician if you are worried about your child's breathing. They

may choose to prescribe soluble steroids to drink in water. A single dose of corticosteroids, which reduces inflammation and swelling, has been shown to assist children with mild, moderate and severe croup. The presence of any of the following signs suggests impending respiratory failure and the child should be treated as though the respiratory distress is severe regardless of the severity of the other clinical signs: change in mental state, such as lethargy and listlessness or decreased level of consciousness; pallor, dusky appearance; a pounding heart. In children with impending respiratory failure, breathing may be laboured, a barking cough may not be prominent, stridor (wheezing) at rest may be hard to hear and sternal wall retractions may not be marked. A child who appears to be deteriorating but whose stridor appears to be improving has worsening airway obstruction and is at high risk of complete airway occlusion. g www.womanthismonth.com

The town is the quintessential high-end relaxation zone, but amides its parties and super yachts, there’s a lot to be done for the budget traveller as well. Although you can visit a few museums and see some pretty architecture, the main tourist attraction is enjoying life at a leisurely pace.

Do this on the beaches, nearby islands, the cafés, the boutiques along Rue Meynadier and Rue d'Antibes, and the casinos. As you walk among the couture shops and palaces of La Croisette, the wealth and glamour of it all cannot fail to impress. If the town’s hedonistic air doesn’t seduce you, there’s enough natural beauty to make the trip worthwhile: the harbour, the bay, the clutch of islands off the coast and the old quarter, Le Suquet, all spring into life on a sunny day. www.womanthismonth.com

SUNDANCE Sundance is to America what Cannes is to France – that is, the country's most prominent film festival and, all the Hollywood glamour aside, it’s one cinema-centric event that anyone interested in motion pictures holds in extremely high regard. What began in the late 1970s as a tiny showcase for independent filmmakers, has turned into an 11-day mountain extravaganza, led by Robert Redford. The festival’s focus is still on filmmaking, especially independent cinema. Even amidst all the Hollywood deal-making and Celebrities at the Toronto Intenational Film Festival

corporate sponsorship, there’s no better place to check out some of what will surely be next year’s most anticipated movies. When not in the theatres, the ski town engages you with some of the most incredible slopes. Bring your gear, purchase a lift ticket for half a day and enjoy some of the greatest snow on Earth before or after your film. If skiing and snowboarding isn’t your thing, take a ride on a dogsled or tube at Gorgoza Park. Do visit Atticus Coffee, Book and Teahouse, a funky little café-bookstore and the perfect place

TORONTO Simply put, this North American city is a lot of fun for both the residents and visitors. Its thrusting skyscrapers downtown reflect the city’s status as Canada’s financial hub. The big city starts bustling with excitement during the famous Toronto International Film Festival when a host of Hollywood and international cinema big wigs descend to showcase the year’s best work. Considered the last hurrah for the film industry before the stress of awards season sets in; many films that premier here end up becoming the front runners at all the major award shows that follow. Apart from celebrity spotting during the festival, the city offers a plethora of activities that’ll keep the tourist, reveller and explorer in you engaged at all times. With classy restaurants and top-notch theatre, opera, museums and art galleries, there is plenty to see and do. The efficient and well-priced transport system makes getting around really easy in the city. And a short drive away is Canadian Niagara Falls, which many claim is a far better view than the American side. North of the city, lies 'Cottage Country' with its Niagra Falls lakes and log cabins.

to sip strong coffee or more than 70 looseleaf teas. Another popular joint is Ciseros, which up top looks like a modest little Italian restaurant but transforms into a nightclub as you go downstairs where you’re likely to find a festival after-party in progress. In addition to this you can go for a spa treatment or fly fishing or participate in arts and crafts workshops such as the ones offered at Sundance Arts Studios.

The city’s cultural scene hums with nightly shows of theatre, ballet and live music at it’s numerous of pubs. Some of the must-visit sites include the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum and the quirky Bata Museum, dedicated to all things shoes. Have fun in the Distillery District, shop for funky fashion along Queen Street West and munch your way round Kensington Market and St Lawrence Market. Toronto City

On a High Note A leisurely (couple of hours long) tea break after lunch sounds a bit dreamlike, right? Ankita Mamgain is happy to find out that this could indeed be her (pardon the pun) cup of tea.

A

ny caffeine addict (myself included) will vouch for the critical importance of a timely cup of tea or coffee. However the quintessential high tea takes your humble fix and elevates it to aristocratic levels. Personally, for me, a typical rat-racing millennial, the concept is a bit alien; something that I associate with Jane Austenesque literature or movies based on it. I recently went to try the newly launched high tea at Bay View Lounge at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Any trip to the landmark property is reason enough to get excited. The hotel undoubtedly has some of the most stunning outlets in the Kingdom but the grandeur of the massive lobby, that infuses Arabian flamboyance with charming Mediterranean countryside via tall olive trees, is inimitable. And it was here that my friend and I settled down to enjoy a hot cuppa. The origin of this ritual goes back to the early 1800s when the seventh Duchess of Bedford felt weak during the two meals that were eaten in those days – breakfast and late dinner. She scheduled a tea and snack break each afternoon, inviting her well-heeled acquaintances, and the practice soon became a high-society norm. Afternoon tea at Bay View Lounge is a fantastic experience not just because of the beverages and delicacies or the www.womanthismonth.com

setting in which they are served, but also because of the remarkable views. Sitting entranced, admiring the azure calmness around us and myriad colours of a sunset sky, we were presented with our beverages, a generous selection of savoury and sweet indulgences and those high-tea musts – scones. I immediately started sipping on my coffee, since this was past my usual coffee break time and the withdrawal had begun. The two multitiered trays in front of us had impeccably arranged preparations which looked so delicious that we dug right in. A far cry from the usual deal, our menu included cream cheese cucumber sandwiches, mini pita breads with sumac chicken and tahina mayo, sesame

croissants with gravlax and honey mustard, a pulled beef pretzel with red onion jam, and mushroom brioche with Boston lobster for the savoury selection. The sweets comprised of Madagascar vanilla brûlée, lemon meringue tart, hazelnut éclair, raspberry tart, macaroons and chocolate truffle. We weren’t done yet though. Chocolate chip, apple and cinnamon and plain raisin scones were served with raspberry jam, clotted cream and lemon curd. The lounge recently launched raw vegan cooking classes and features a few of these on the menu, we tried the raw vegan pizza with basil, tomato and macadamia mozzarella. There’s also an extensive menu of fresh juices, iced teas and more delicious food. The cherry on top was live musical duo Alex and Sandra. To be honest, I’ve always treated this idea with a bit of scorn thinking, “It looks unnecessarily fancy and who’s got the time for it?” But to my surprise, I did find it absolutely wonderful. Maybe it’s the combination of outstanding gourmet delicacies, superb service and the magical views that did it for me. This was a true indulgence for all senses, making you stop for a moment and savour it completely. I could totally get used to spending afternoons like this.

horoscopes

Star

Gazing Raphael brings the latest on the stars’ radar to your zodiac sign.

You cannot always satisfy everyone around you and decisions you will be forced to make this month are bound to upset someone. You need to accept this rather than being concerned with keeping the peace. You have had a rough time emotionally but life is not just about sacrifice for the sake of others and on occasions it is important to be selfish too.

Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19

Money can always be a challenge for your sign, mainly because whilst you can excel at making it, you are also never that prudent when spending it. Your shopping habits can be impulsive and often eccentric. Some of you would do well to seek advice on how to keep hold of more of the money you make. Try to rein yourself in when it comes to making impressions.

Libra Sept 24 – Oct 23

Pisces Feb 20 – Mar 20

Money that you put aside some time ago will mature and offer a good return that you should now consider cashing in. Don’t allow any element of greed to creep into your thinking – just get out while you’re ahead. On the relationship front, decisions made in January will now be having a strong influence on your thinking and you could find yourself fighting back the tears if the outcome was not as positive as you would have wanted.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20

Many of you will return to the work place refreshed from the festive break and feel ready to approach new and exciting challenges with renewed optimism and invention. This will be particularly evident on the 12th when you impress others with your views and your comments will be appreciated. On the romance front, you could find yourself attracted to a work colleague but this could be more about problems at home than genuine interest.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21

This month is going to see you pulling out all the stops as you endeavour to get a long overdue task completed, which in turn will assist you in moving your career to the next level. You have been operating under a culture of acceptance and this does not fit well with your personality. Be true to yourself and worry less about what others might think and more about what makes you happy. www.womanthismonth.com

Virgo Aug 24 – Sept 23

Gemini May 22 – Jun 21

It looks like the worst of your conflicts from last month are behind you now but that doesn’t mean it is all plain sailing. There is still a lot of work to be done to get things back to the way they used to be and you are sure to have to twist a few arms and be at your most accommodating before you can embrace a full return to normality. When the dust has settled, it might be a good idea to analyse what led you to where you were.

Money spent on a holiday or recent home improvements will leave your bank balance feeling lightweight which could have a negative knock-on effect in other areas. If you’re living with someone the argument quota could rise and the pressures from children will not help. Things could get to quite heated so keep your thoughts in order.

Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 22

Property problems from last year will have, by now, been pretty much resolved and the light at the end of the tunnel is bright. There is a positive aura surrounding you and this will inspire those around you as they find your renewed optimism infectious. A lady of past significance will reappear on the 17th sparking a row considered long forgotten.

Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 23

Sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21

Leo Jul 24 – Aug 23

Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20

You will be in your element this month as certain factors come together to return some balance to your life. However, this more positive state is only likely if you are honest and, to a certain extent, courageous enough to take a difficult emotional situation in hand and finally lay it to rest. Do this and your mind and life in general will be peaceful. Underneath all the disguises and confused emotions lurk your true feelings about your past, a subject that, in most cases, you have kept very well hidden. However, someone you’ve confided in may help you come to terms with what has haunted your thoughts. In February you will be given the opportunity to exorcise your demons.

Your star sign is renowned for its affection and generosity of spirit. However, this month you’ll be accused of hurting someone close by not identifying exactly what you want from a relationship. Still, doubts introduced by someone who has an ulterior motive are making you think twice over long-term relationship plans. Stand by your gut feeling.

True romance creeps slowly into your life this February. In fact it may come as such a surprise that you could be lost for words initially, since the person who has amorous intentions towards you is not someone you would have expected to take an interest. Still, once the emotions are out in the open, there is no sense in holding back! February 2016
