THE PERFECT RESULT Elder Dorcas Beatty, FOUNDER & EIC

Trials come in different ways. They may knock on your door as physical, emotional, financial, relational and yes spiritual. They may come at you on your job, church, your home and they may take aggressive action on your family. They may arrive at any time and during any season. They may come suddenly like a car accident, or they may be prolonged, like a drawn-out court case. Trials can be public in nature or appear very private. Trials can be directly related to our own bad decisions, or they may not be related at all.

A trial can be like a rock hitting the

water. You don't cause the jolt, but you're impacted by it. You're just standing there and suddenly the smooth lake of your life surges into a giant wave and almost drowns you. Some trials seem to blow in absolutely without reason. You can find yourself saying, "I didn't see that one coming". The storms of life can be like a tornado. When a tornado blows through a community, it can tear and rip its way through, blowing down one-hundred year old trees and tearing houses apart. Trials can rip, tear

fruitfulness. He is saying that this is the perfect result of endurance. Most often, because of the discomfort, the pain, or the hardship, we try to cut our trials short - to put an end to them. Before long, we are resenting them to such an extreme way that we will try anything to escape or to run from them. Instead, James says, endure the trial; let it come to completion. When it does, you will be a better person for it. Really you will! The importance of stressful circumstances is that they allow us to discover who we are.

Scars are all the times our bodies decided to fight, to hang on a lil’ while longer, and I’m so thankful for that. Instead of labelling our scars as bad or insecurities, let us remind ourselves of what they really mean. It can be difficult to remember to do this sometimes, but we can do it. I still have the scars of MS on my brain (literally), but I'm still standing. My newest scar really took me by surprise - multiple blood clots in my lungs. When I thought all was stable, another medical infirmity came without any warning. I’m still not entirely okay with all of my scars, but my increasing faith in the Lord has helped me to become comfortable with what they represent. They are bumpy, messy and irritating; but they represent life-changing and life-saving tools for my life. They also keep me humble. Believe it or not, your scars work for you. They hold your body, mind and soul together. The bruises, grazes, and scars helps with our ultimate healing. Scars are a beautiful roadmap of your life. Nourish them, care for them, and be kind to them, and yourself. "Count them all joy!"

ROSEMARY SANTIAGO

BREAST CANCER OVERCOMER

My name is Rosemary Santiago and I a mother of 2 children with 2 grandchildren. My daughter is Jacklyn Vasquez and my son is Andres Rolon. They both have one child each. I currently live in Camden, NJ and I work as a bilingual probation officer and a court coordinator at the Camden County Hall of Justice, Family Division. I enjoy singing and praise dancing. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in July 2007. At the time I was 43 years old. It was my very first mammogram and ultrasound. I had absolutely no family history of cancer. Nothing was detected at the time. I was simply told that all women over 40 should have a mammogram. My doctor wrote a prescription and the rest followed. I was initially diagnosed with stage one from what was seen on the mammogram and ultrasound. They informed me that once the lump was removed, no additional treatment was needed such as chemotherapy and radiation. It wasn’t until I had my surgery that they saw it was bigger than previously thought and the diagnosis went from Stage 1 to Stage 3. At the time I was grieving for my mother who had passed away less than 9 months before; but my faith was strong. When the doctor called me in to go see her, I was sitting at my desk at my job. I just couldn’t wait for the appointment, so I was able to convince her to tell me over the phone. There was disbelief but no fear. It is simply hard to explain. I lifted my hand in the air and said … “I am yours.” My focus was on my children and how I would tell them. I checked on my mother’s side of the family back to my great grandmother to see if any of her sisters had any type of cancer. There was nothing at all. This was also confirmed with genetic testing.

55

My family was very supportive. I had family members

something to eat. Some would come to clean up the house, especially on the days of treatment. My daughter drove me to all my chemotherapy appointments. I truly cannot complain. I also did a commercial for the American Cancer Society. When I was tested for the chemotherapy that I was to receive, I had a very bad allergic reaction to it.

Rosemary Santiago Continued: The reaction was severe. I kept saying to myself as I prayed “I am yours.” That kept me going to the following week and decided to try it again. The other obstacle was college. Right before I was diagnosed, I started college. At first I thought I had to drop out but instead, I focused on my classes and left the rest in prayer. I didn’t focus on the pain, nausea, and dizziness. When my symptoms kicked in, I would take my medication as I prayed and got back on the computer to finish school. My strength came from HIM. I can sit back now and ask, “How did I do all that?” I did it with His grace and His mercy. I was baptized after finding my home church. I learned how to have a relationship with the Lord. Three months after my baptism, my mother passed away. Nine months after my mother passed, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall a]direct your paths.” Once you trust… you will never fear… Keep your mind busy on living and loving life and let the Lord take care of the rest. Life can be a struggle, but it is a “Beautiful Struggle.”

In 2015, I had my mammogram and was called to

the

were

abnormal. My primary physician referred me to Carolina Breast Imaging in Greenville NC to have another mammogram using advanced technology. A mass was discovered, and a needle biopsy was done. The doctor called me back and revealed to me that the mass was cancerous. I looked at him and said “NO!!” He looked at me in awe, and I said “ I’m sorry, but

With treatment, you will be fine.” I had to find a way to break the news to my family without them having a pity party for me. I hate pity parties. When I shared the information with my family members, I plainly told them, “The doctor said that the mass in my

cancerous.

I’m

not

worried,

because I have been praying and believing the report of the Lord- With his stripes I am healed.” I stood firm on God's word and praised God for my healing.

I had seven (7) treatments of chemotherapy on Friday, every 3 weeks for 6 hours from June to October. I endured physical changes and the loss of my hair; however,

my

SOLID.

After

the

completion of my treatments, I had the mastectomy and reconstruction in January 2016. I never lost faith in God. I stayed the course, trusted God, and came out victorious. Hallelujah!!! To God be all the glory!!!

7

BARBARA BRUNSON CONTINUED: October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I just want to encourage women to please get your annual mammogram. Early detection plays a key role in your outcome. Don’t wait until you feel lumps in your breast, because I never felt anything in mine when I was diagnosed. One thing I do know is that you can’t determine your outcome by someone else’s outcome because we are all different. I talked with some who had gone through chemo, and they shared some of their experiences; but by the

grace

of

God,

there

was

a

lot

experience. I thank God for my journey. It brought me closer to God and taught me how to lean and depend on Him.

The Woman At The Well The story of the woman at the well teaches us that God loves us in spite of our bankrupt lives. God values us enough to actively seek us, to welcome us to intimacy, and to rejoice in our worship. As a result of Jesus’ conversation, only a person like the Samaritan woman, an outcast from her own people, could understand what this means. To be wanted, to be cared for when no one, not even herself, could see anything of value in her—this is grace indeed.

THE BATTLE BELONGS TO THE LORD Our

enemy

knows

our

weaknesses

as

humans and will seek to exploit them to make us fall. Even at our best, we are weak and we still need the strength of God. God has given us armor and weapons, but their power comes from God. 2 Corinthians 10:4 says, “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.” In God we have divine power to destroy strongholds, fight battles, and gain victory.

9

Cry out to him to fight for you and with you. You can’t do it on your own. Rely on God, put on your armor, pick up your sword, and fight. How are you responding to battles? Are you relying on God’s strength, rather than your own? Give it all to Him that is able to keep us from falling and present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy!

My name is Adrienne Patricia Carter. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in the year 2015. I had a routine mammogram believing it would be absolutely normal when I was called back in to the doctor’s office for an ultrasound of both breast. The results showed substantial breast calcifications, so I underwent an ultrasoundguided biopsy – the results came back positive for breast cancer. In the month of October 2015, I underwent surgery at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC. It was a six hour surgery – which included reconstructive surgery. My family sit

Adrienne P. Carter continued: I never dreamed that I would be going through such a storm at 42 years old with two teenagers and a two year old to persevere as MOM. I am thankful that this was something that I was able to handle with the help of the Lord and the support of my family and friends. I am truly grateful to the entire team of doctors and staff who worked together to help me through that trying ordeal. To God be all the Glory, He did for me; He protected me from dangerous distresses seen and unseen. I encourage you all to trust God with all your mind, heart and soul. “By His stripes, I remain healed.”

MAGGIE WILLIAMS

BREAST CANCER OVERCOMER

As a 9 year cancer survivor, I can say I am truly blessed. I am so thankful to God for being my very present help through it all. From the day I realized I had a lump in my right breast until the very last treatment of Chemo & Radiation. Some days were different than others but God’s presence peacefully showed up and in Him I found so much Strength and Faith. Strength that I didn’t know I had and the Faith to know nothing is too hard for God. Regular self breast examinations are very important. Early detection can save lives. Maggie Williams

Grace is a subject that means different things to different people. It is mentioned more than 150 times in the Bible - beginning in Genesis where Noah found grace in the eyes of God, all the way through to the last verse in the Bible. By understanding fully what the Bible teaches about grace, you will come to see God as our wonderful Creator and Father who is giving us His generous goodness and favor freely. In return He desires a close relationship with Him as we would desire of our children to whom we give good gifts. We are saved by grace, and not from anything we could possibly do. God's goodness leads us to repentance and a changed and improved life. Grace is universally needed by everyone - from the prodigal son to the well-adjusted righteous person who still falls short and can only look to God's grace for salvation. Nothing of ourselves can save us. Thank you God for your precious “GRACE and MERCY”.

Screening Recommendations

Risk Factors: Obesity is a key risk factor for developing breast cancer. African American women have the highest rates of obesity or being overweight than another group in the United States. so this contributes to the increase in breast cancer rates that we see in Black women.

Mammography is the most effective screening tool used today to find breast cancer in most women. However, the benefits of mammography vary by age. You and your health care provider can discuss what course of action is best for you. The screening recommendations referenced in this article are from the American Cancer Society.

Smoking is also a contributing factor. African American women are more likely to be exposed to second -hand smoke than other ethnic groups. Comorbidities having two or more diseases or medical

WAIT ON THE LORD

REALLY? Elder Dee

PSALM 27:14 says “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” When I feel God calling or causing me to sit still and wait, my first reaction is often to think, "REALLY LORD!" The concept

that if God is saying

“Wait,” there is a reason. And when He does, I must ask myself, “How do I wait?”

What should

my attitude be as I wait on God?

LEAVES

Here’s what His Word tells me: "Wait with patience knowing that God is working." Wait with patience? What a word. Can this be done? Do I have enough faith to wait with patience? Yes I do and so do you. Patience is having grit. It is having perseverance

and

tolerance.

Do

we

have

the

tenacity to run with patience? Good question. God knows where we are. Sometimes we forget this.

Sometimes

we

even

feel

that

God

has

forgotten us. He hasn’t. God knows exactly where we are and how much patience we have picked up in the midst of waiting. So when you are afflicted with those forsaken feelings, when you are on the verge of throwing a pity party, go back to the Word of God. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him: "Fret not thyself because of him who prospers in his way . . . For evildoers shall be cut off: "But those that wait upon the LORD shall inherit the earth." (Psalm 37:7,9). Wait with expectation and hope knowing that He works all things for good. "I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

He brought me up out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings." (Psalm 40:17). wait with a teachable spirit knowing that as you wait with the right

maturing as He desires. "Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for Thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day." (Psalm 25:5b). "Knowing this, that the trying of your faith works patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." (James 1:34). As I remember that God is faithful and that He is always working for my good and His glory, I can relax and joyfully wait on Him to accomplish His purposes. My attitude then depends on letting what I know override what I feel! I encourage you to wait on God, "REALLY!"

DOES YOUR ANCHOR HOLD?

An anchor is a device that secures an object in place so that it becomes immobile. Like many women in the Body of Christ who have been on a turbulent journey, you have been tossed, turned and tipped to the pint that you have dropped an anchor in a place that God didn't intend tor you to stay. You are stuck in discontentment and discouragement and God is calling for you to come to contentment and encouragement. First you must release what God has already let go of. You must walk away from all the turmoil and trash that have caused you to possibly fall. There is a terrible danger in holding on to what God has told you to let go of! Are you stuck in a place that does not make sense and that God did not ordain? You may be wounded, but you are still alive. You may may hurting, but you are still standing. You may have scars, but you are still healed. Get up and get going-you might not enjoy the journey, but you are going to love the destination. I have always like to travel whether on I95 or in the airways. When the trip first begins, I love the sight seeing and stopping on the highway to smell the flowers. However, after a few hours, my legs start hurting and my back calls out for help. When the destination is reached, my soul cries out "hallelujah". With that said, with the storms of life, we do get a bit weary and despaired, but God with His good self will take it all and push us to our destiny.

GLORIA'S CAKES & THINGS

My name is LaToya Marible, and I am a single mother of a 20 year old young man. I am also Owner and CEO of Gloria’s Cakes & Things. What is Gloria’s Cakes & Things you may ask? It’s a bakery developed from pure love and dedication.

I was inspired by my mother

and my son who showed me that there is nothing greater in this world than a fighter and go getter who wants better for themselves. My mother’s determination on life inspired me to pick up where she left off from in the kitchen.

She did it all, from cooking big

family meals to baking the best desserts you could ever taste.

Her dream was to one day

have her own restaurant, but life had other plans for her.

After her passing, I decided to

keep her legacy alive through baking.

I found

myself using baking for therapy. Baking is my passion. We tend to pick up certain things to keep us focused and baking does it for me. My mind goes somewhere else when I’m in that kitchen. I truly enjoy putting smiles on other’s faces. My prayer is one day and as God sees fit, to own my business and for it to expand to something spectacular. I have a recipe that I really like and would like to share with you. It’s called the “Italian Cream Cake”.

October was first declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989. Since then, October has been a time to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and be a voice for its victims. Domestic violence is prevalent in every community, and affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. Physical violence is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior as part of a much larger, systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and even death. The devastating consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and last a lifetime. Although there has been substantial progress in reducing domestic violence, an average of 20 people are physically abused by intimate partners every minute. This equates to more than 10 million abuse victims annually. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been physically abused by an intimate partner, and 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have been severely physically abused by an intimate partner. Millions of Americans live in daily, silent fear within their own homes. In addition, every year millions of children are exposed to domestic violence. Domestic violence incidents affect every person within a home and can have long-lasting negative effects on children's emotional well-being, and social and academic functioning.
