t is shutters-down for Anna Canteens that provided meals to the poor & middle-class people for mere Rs.5. It could be only a short pause the government has taken before it renews the contract with the Akshaya Patra Foundation. Yet, there is a general uproar with opposition parties slamming it as a move that denies affordable food to the poor. On the ip side, the move has to be applauded as it is done with a good objective. Reddy closed the canteens to purge them of corruption, it is said. They are likely to be back in a new avtar, rechristened as Rajanna Canteens. It is relevant to mention here that the 2 mobile canteens- Roja’s Rajanna canteens- run by YSRCP leader and Nagari MLA Roja in her constituency earned her immense popularity with many patrons enjoying a good meal for just Rs.4 per plate. They were launched as a direct challenge to the TDP’s Anna canteens.

conversation with clients. EXCERPTS The genesis Destiny brought me to the city 30 years ago as an employee. Surviving on a frugal income of Rs.800, I could not even afford three square meals a day. Even during those days of partial starvation, I nursed a dream that one day I would sign a cheque of Rs.1cr. I came a long way, successfully completing 23 ventures. I need to give back to the city that gave me name and prosperity. That is why I turned down lucrative projects in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Dream & destination The entire path is strewn with hurdles.
It was a roller coaster ride. I resolved that I would grow rich and so rich that I would provide people with that meal, I was deprived of in my prime youth. Taking the ups and downs in my own stride, I built this magnificent Charan empire brick by brick. I am sieged with the desire to provide homes for at least a lakh people and livelihood for 1000, besides making a 1000 crorepathis. People trust me with their hard earned money. I must ensure that it grows at least a hundred fold. Green dream Hailing from an agri family, it cuts my heart to see a tree being felled and as a realtor, I need to do it to develop the land. So I plant at least a 1000 saplings in lieu of each tree I fell.
Expertise Vizag is growing rapidly. I come from Chittore which is close to two capitals Chennai and Bengaluru. I saw them growing from cities with 30 lakh population to those with a crore. I studied the pattern of urban growth. So I can put my finger right on those potential spots and can get the very best for my customers. Real lessons Our business throws many windows open. You learn a lot more about people, community, government, administration and in short, life, more than any other profession. Anyone who enters this arena should consider himself/herself lucky because there is an unlimited space here. With passion and dedication, you can carve a niche for yourself. That is what I did. Land, the best asset An investor asks 2 important questions before he opens his purse. “Will it be safe?” and “Is it lucrative?” There cannot be a more fitting answer to that than Roosevelt’s quote - Real estate cannot be lost or stolen, nor can it be carried away. It is about the safest investment in the world.”

USP & Success mantra A customer chooses us because none would offer the kind of land, quality of development, infrastruct -ure and prices we offer. More than the material comforts you give, it is the intangibles- honesty & integrity that win the hearts of customers. We have expanded our clientele base to this extent only on the foundation that we are here to make life easier for the customer and his lifestyle better. My success mantra is honesty, service, access -ibility, building customer’s trust and punctuality. I don’t keep anyone waiting, whether it is my staff or my clients. The appointed hour time is sacrosanct for me.
selling yards, and later feet. If we are going 20 km away from the city now, we may have to go 40km away after a while. In India, we have enough land and what we need is good planning. We must plan our ventures in a better manner. We should provide infrastructure, taking into consideration the ever growing population and their future needs. Charan empire We have 14 branches in Vizianagaram, Vizag and Srikakulam, efficiently run by a 1000-strong staff in a totally decentralized structure. My biggest strength is my loyal employees. I don’t have the greed of keeping every penny I earn to myself and I happily share it with my people. Perhaps, that is what keeps them glued to me.
CSR activity I have not set up a separate cell for it, but problems of every employee are attended to. A lot of my doles are given towards education. I believe we can help the entire family if we can educate one member of it. Recreation I worship my work and it is my recreation too. I am so happy with it that I don’t seek any break. I am the first to come to office. I arrive before the cleaning staff comes, and I am the last one to leave. Personal note Luckily, my children Sai Charan and Meghana Chowdhary share my sentiment. Charan, who is working in the Apple Corporate office in US, will return to the city after earning an MBA degree and adequate experience to launch his own IT company, employing a 1000 people. My daughter, who is getting trained under ace interior designer of the region Ms.Bina Lalwani, aspires to launch her own 500-strong firm.
Gratifying moments All those moments, when I see a parent stating that the property he bought from us came in handy for his daughter’s wedding or son’s education, are precious for me. Future Land transactions go on as long as the earth exists. The units may change. Now we are selling acres, after some years maybe we will be

auging the speed of changing times, Prof.K.Siva Rama Krishna, Vice-Chancellor, GITAM deemed to be University is a scholar of dynamic ideas. With his specialization in Human Resource Management, his research focuses on the importance of institute-industry interaction. An NCC paratrooper & athlete, his enthusiasm towards learning is exemplary. Equally intense is his gusto for the present generation, which he believes is responsive to social issues. He has completed a UGC Major Research project- ‘HRD Interventions in Technical Education' & authored 12 books. A recipient of the Educational Leadership Award by Dewang Mehta National Education Awards, he has organized over 50 national & international seminars and conferences and has the prestigious NIPM Fellowship to his name. Though Prof. K.Siva Rama Krishna has taken over the reins of the prestigious GITAM deemed to be University recently, his tryst with the institute began 22 years ago. "My career trajectory followed the institute's rise from a singlestream college to a multi-disciplinary university," says the V-C setting the tone of the conversation that veers around the present education scenario in general and GITAM in particular. The highly articulate professor also talks of the goals he has set for his term as the Head of the University.

What are the significant trends in the present education system? Interface with external world: There is a dynamic change in the external environment. Educational institutions in the present day must adapt to these changes in order to groom the student in accordance with the societal and corporate requirements, particularly in technical education, which progresses in leaps and bounds and evolves with a mind-boggling rapidity. The role of universities is to unobtrusively adopt these changes into their curriculum and ensure that the education imparted is relevant to the present day. Skill-based education: Not knowledge, but the skill of applying knowledge for the benefit of the society is the ultimate focus of institutes today. We at GITAM have been taking the necessary steps in that direction. Value-based education: At the national and the university levels, steps are being taken to sensitize

students towards values and their responsibilities towards society. ICT in the teaching-learning process: The present generation is a digital generation. So, it is only natural that universities are introducing technological gadgets in the teaching processes to cater to the dynamic needs of students. Inter-disciplinary programmes: A significant trend emerging across the world is an inter-disciplinary outlook towards education. Such

In GITAM, we have introduced a choice-based credit system under which, at least 20% of the students' academic credits must be earned from courses other than their professional course. Please define the ideal university environment and how do you encourage it in GITAM? At the risk of being repetitive, I stress that an ideal university environment is one which exposes the student to a multi-disciplinary learning because, such an environment allows him or her to connect to the society’s problems in their entirety. Our efforts in GITAM are focused towards nurturing such an environment. What are the goals you have set for the coming five years? We want to develop a start-up culture in the campus. We have been working with prestigious universities like Northeastern University, Boston, to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the campus that helps in building students as job-creators, instead of staying as job-seekers.
What is your take on the present day education scenario in India? Our education system sadly lacks interface with the industry. Perhaps, our country being a closed economy till recently was the reason for this lacuna. But in the other parts of the world, you can see innovation thriving in educational campuses. They work in close contact with industries. Now, Indian universities too are realizing the compulsive need for both academicians and practising professionals to come together. They have to lead and to be led by each other. It is a mutually beneficial exercise. How can teachers influence the education system? There is no need to mention that the teacher is an indispensable asset to any education system. He can not only contribute to the curriculum, but also give a shape to it. By incorporating changes happening in the society into their curriculum, teachers influence the education system in a way only they can. For this reason, they should also be given ample freedom to participate in policy-making. How does GITAM ensure that students are job-ready? We have introduced skill-oriented courses into the programmes so that students are trained well before they enter the corporate world. What are the well-being measures you have taken for students? Our students too, like any of their peers,
face problems. We have initiated well-being classes wherein inspirational leaders from organizations like Akshay Patra and Ram Krishna Mission are invited to address issues they face. They are taught to manage stress, confusion, anxiety, time, etc. When it comes to counselling, we have a dedicated department of Applied Psychology that students can approach without any inhibition or hesitation. Taking this a step further, we want to institutionalise the counselling activity by merging it with the department of Psychiatry. We are also providing students an opportunity to have their problems addressed through a toll-free number. This would ensure their privacy and build a stigma-free interaction. How do you deal with the competition? Competition is part of life. Being a deemed university, we have a great academic freedom that enables us to spot and sense competition, and bring changes in our curriculum to withstand it. Your take on changes in the education system over the years Change is a natural process. The means and amount of exposure differs from generation to generation. The information youngsters of this generation are exposed to, is phenomenal. Knowledge is abundant. It can be gained by a click of finger. I feel it doesn't have to be imparted in classrooms anymore. What has to be imparted is the skill of channelizing it in a positive way. As knowledge is not constant, by the time a student enters a corporate, most of it would be outdated. What the world demands today is the skill of learning. It doesn't want to know what you have learnt, but how long you can sustain your ability to learn.

Your take on today’s youth The current generation is very intelligent. Human evolution itself is a progressive one. Of course, every generation has its positive and negative sides. But as guides, it is our responsibility to recognise the positives and figure out how to channelize them in a constructive way. When informed appropriately, this generation reacts to social issues with a higher immediacy and seriousness than the previous one. Don’t forget that they can come up with a fitting response, if they are apprised of the issues on hand. Social awareness of the students: There is a need to build the bridge, which has been hitherto missing, between the students and society. This should and can be done by engaging students in social
Tell us one unforgettable incident that impacted you deeply. I simply cannot get over the untimely departure of the great visionary, Sri.M.V.V.S.Murthi. It was a terrible blow. His passion for service reects in the very spirit of GITAM. Every corner of the educational campuses he established mirrors his devotion. Reaching education to the underprivileged was his life’s mission. It was his dream to give education to
one lakh students. Today our distance education programme alone records enrollment of one lakh. It's our responsibility to take his vision ahead. Journey with GITAM It has been only 11 years since GITAM became an independent university, but its growth in this short span has been so phenomenal that it has enabled us to compete with the topmost universities in the country. My own personal growth has been accelerated as the university has grown. GITAM has given us, who believe in it, a lot in terms of exposure and opportunities.

Its defining sweet & spicy tang comes from plum sauce, which is liberally used in Chinese food. A mound of sushi rice is pressed by hand and topped with glazed raw tuna. The tuna used in this dish is the yellow-fin tuna, which is known for its health merits. It is imported all the way from Scotland to put together this delicate avour pairing.
There are over a thousand kinds of dim sum or dumpling, but the Tian Wandou Dianxin has our heart. Steamed, bite-sized portions are stuffed with sweet pea imported from Thailand. These are served in a bamboo basket with homemade dim sum sauce of garlic, shallots & chilli.

Giving high priority to hygiene, they are given free sanitary napkins and health tips. Special Gynaecologists conduct various tests and cancer screening for women. If free eye camps are held on alternate Sundays, free health camps are held on the remaining Sundays. More than 1000 beneficiaries attend these camps every week. Many children visit the eye camps and go back with a big smile. That genuine smile and happiness of children and the aged give Doraswamy utmost satisfaction. e may pride over the fact that ours is the country that invented zero, but discovering it in our marksheets is certainly a dreadful affair. The primary reason while high school is a time of ample mistakes, its marks earmark us for the quality of college, coaching and adult life looming ahead. Such a rigid system is a modus operandi of the country, causing small but significant dents to which are academicians like Prof. K.S.R.K.Srinivasa Rao of Vision Classes. A math coaching centre for aspirants of IITs, NITs and other deemed universities, it does not select students based on rank & rate. Admission is given to the earliest 200 who knock their doors. Students are then sculpted and polished over a period of one to two years in a stress-free environment. His wife, K. Phanipriya, supervises the practice sessions. The sessions are from 5:00am to 7:00 am for seniors and 6:00am to 7:30am for juniors, while the evening sessions are

A former Head of the Department of math in Goutham Academy, Vijaywada & Principal of Sri Chaitanya College, Prof. KSRK believes that “if you prepare a student as a marks-making machine, he will grow up to become only a money-making one.” He has set his coaching pattern in such a way that students emerge well groomed.
Prof. KSRK talks of his obsessive devotion to the oft dreaded subject – mathematics and how it helps the student develop a wide perspective of learning and life.
His classes are homework-free, as the concepts are revised in the classroom itself. Chapters are taught in 3 levels i.e., Level 1- basics; Level 2- JEE Mains pattern; Level 3- JEE Advanced pattern. With an impressive record of former students getting seats in IITs, NITs and prestigious universities, he says, his students themselves are the crusaders of his institute.
OBJECTIVE OF VISION: In an era where awards mean everything, we strive for the overall development of students. They have put their faith in me, which, I believe, is a prerequisite for a better rapport.

Why maths? Math is an extraordinary and a crazy subject. If you understand its concepts, you enjoy it. Even if you don’t, you appreciate its meticulousness. So, I chose math as a sole stream. M=P+C which means math = physics + chemistry. Marks scored in math are equal to those in physics and chemistry combined.

What is your programme pattern? Our pattern consists of conceptual teaching, learning, practising, monitoring, assessing and error analysis. Tell us about the changes in IITJEE MAINS 2019 and Which attempt is useful for JEE aspirants? Owing to recent changes in the exam pattern, IIT-JEE MAINS will now be conducted in 2 slots, with 4 shifts each, and the best of two would be considered. These slots would be held once in January, and again in April. I think that both the attempts are crucial. If they do not qualify in the first attempt, they can always try harder for the next one. I suggest that the students take an early lead on these entrance exams. Academic balancing methodology It is common among students to practise those subjects they’re strong at, while paying less attention to the others. This is often proved counterproductive. In order to create an academic balance, the student must first work on his weak subjects. The ideal methodology of

preparation is different from that of execution. When it comes to exams, he must first solve the sums he is strong at & then approach the rest. Positive parenting This is where I have gone that extra mile and adopted some out-of-the box concepts. I believe, my interaction with the parents is crucial in shaping the gen next. Vision runs on the ideals of tradition, honour and values. Parents are counselled from time to time in parent-child ties. We also ensure that respect for our traditions is inculcated in the child, because they are the gravitational pull that keeps us down-to-earth.

Vision’s vision I don’t find anything praise-worthy when we talk of the present scenario of the intermediate education. After working with many educational institutions, I could identify what was really missing in their programmes. So, I have evolved my own method and style. With an aim to facilitate students with a comprehensive and integrated development, I set up my Vision Classes. Here, what you sow, so shall reap. Vision would turn eight years old by this Children’s Day. Our children are everywhere, as responsible members of the society and I take pride in it.

The best part is that I do it out of choice, nobody is forcing me into it. So, I have the liberty of doing as much as I can without burning out. How long did it take for you to learn Telugu? In my initial films, in order to get the dialogues right, I had to memorize them, get them translated, & practise them in English. But I started picking up the language quickly. My major motivation to learn it was that I wanted to be a part of the conversations, understand them, and be able to give quick replies. Of course, since I'm not from the film industry, the initial phase was a lot of trial-and-error. I worked in my first movie while I was still in college. At that point, I didn't even know whether I wanted to be an actress yet. The offer came out of the blue and I did not want to let it go. In fact, I always say this- my world is the most straight when I'm hanging upside down. It leads me to a calm meditative state. It opens up my mind, and there is clarity of thought. All in all, it's a great start to the day.
because with so much new content coming in, and such openness to new stories, it is a great time to be in this industry. The digital entertainment platform is thriving, which, in a way, is pushing big screens to put something invaluable on the table. I'm always excited about exploring new sides of me and putting them out there.

It was clear to me later that Meghna had had a tough childhood, and had reasons for the way her character turned out. And I believe that's the best part of our job. We get to play so many people with different layers of emotions; we get to live so many different lives.

But in the first three months, I signed Yaariyan, and by the time it was out, I was already working in a couple of films in Telugu. So I did swim. After that each movie landed me with bigger and better projects, so I saw no reason to stop. In the next four years, I did 16 movies, and I continue to love the groove.
