‘Tis the Season
T
he cooler weather and shorter days are sure indicators that the Winter solstice is approaching. That means we’re drawing ever closer to the time of year many love the best—the holiday season! The solstice brings with it various celebrations from many nations and cultures for us to find delight.
Here in New England the excitement begins in November with the first night of Hanukkah taking place the day before Thanksgiving. After the turkey and trimmings, the celebrations continue and the anticipation mounts in the weeks leading up to Christmas and a brand new year. Many see those short weeks as a period of hustle and bustle. So it’s important that we put aside the holiday pressure
and stress and focus on the splendor of each other and our local communities. Whether you’re seeking the warmth of friendship over hot cocoa or cider, or the heartwarming awe of the performing arts, the offerings are plentiful. Tree harvesting, lighting ceremonies, and outdoor events can serve to create memories, strengthen friendships, and renew an appreciation of nature. Fundraising functions provide the opportunity to help those who are less fortunate. Your support
can make the holidays sparkle just a bit brighter for many families. Communities come together as area schools, libraries, businesses, and churches sponsor fairs, concerts, book discussions, and house tours to spread the magic of the season, showcase local talent, and remind us of the beauty that is all around us. Our area is abundant with specialty shops and services where that special gift can be found. And don’t forget the eateries. We urge you to shop and dine locally. This guide has many shops and businesses offering something for everyone on your list.
Within the pages of this guide, the best of Greater New Haven and more are on display—lit up in all their holiday splendor. Take a moment to explore the listings and make this year a holiday season to remember.

Holiday Open House 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Stratford Historical Society 967 Academy Hill Road, Stratford. Presented by the Stratford Junior Historical Society. Although Christmas would not have been celebrated by the Town’s early settlers as religious customs forbade it, the Captain David Judson House will be decorated in true fashion for an open house. Built circa 1750, by Capt David Judson, on the site of his grandfather’s 1639 stone house. Judson House is a fine example of Georgian architecture which contains period pieces of Stratford origin. Until 1925, when the Curtiss sisters [Judson descendants] donated the house to the Historical Society, many generations of Judson called the Judson House “home.” Christmas celebrations became popular in the Victorian era. Shubert Theater 247 College Street, New Haven. Charles Dickens’ story of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge—who discovers the true meaning of Christmas with the help of Tiny Tim and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future—captures all the warmth, goodwill, and musical memories of the holiday season. Performed by a spirited ensemble cast of actors, singers and dancers, this musical Carol features two dozen traditional Christmas carols including “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “The Holly and the Ivy,” “Here We Come A Wassailing” “Away In A Manger” and “O Come, O Come Immanuel.” This staging of the Dickens’ tale evokes both the chilling poverty and luxurious wealth of 19th Century London as a thrilling backdrop to the spellbinding tale.

JCC Cultural Arts Manager DeDe JacobsKomisar selected “He Who Laughs” as JCC Theaterwork’s first show of the season because it “exemplifies the company’s mission of exploring what Jewish theater is and can be. Plays like “He Who Laughs” go deep into Jewish tradition to make us question who we are, where we’ve come from, and where we’re going as a community.” With the help of the Connecticut Humanities Fund, JacobsKomisar is presenting interfaith panels following two of the performances, delving into the theological and sociological themes of the play.
