WELCOME ABOARD • BIENVENUE À BORD

EN AVANT TOUTE

BY | PAR GREGG SARETSKY, WESTJET PRESIDENT AND CEO/ PRÉSIDENT ET CHEF DE LA DIRECTION

MARCHING FORWARD When it comes to sports, I’ve always been a golf and ski guy. The routine of one sport for warm weather and another for cold has worked nicely living in Canada, but recently my sports routine was disrupted. Encouraged by some of my colleagues, I joined the WestJet cycling club. Helmet on, I have been putting myself on two wheels way outside of my comfort zone. As daunting as some of the courses we ride may be (I’m about 10 years older than the next oldest member of the group), I’m struck by one thing every time we ride: when you step out of your comfort zone, or throw in a disruptor to your

6

MARCH 2016 | WESTJETMAGAZINE.COM

routine, fantastic things happen. I really love the new challenge. When WestJet took to the Canadian skies in 1996, that’s exactly what we were in the airline industry—a disruptor. With low fares, caring WestJetters and a focus on guest experience, we wanted to change the way Canadians thought about air travel. Twenty years later, we’re proud to report that disruption done right leads to great places. Speaking of great places, this month we start service to WestJet Encore’s first U.S. destination— Boston, Massachusetts. Steeped in American history, Boston is WestJet’s 100th destination and touted as one of the world’s favourite cities. WestJet Encore will fly between Toronto and Boston this month and start service between Halifax and Boston in April. And we’ll get you there on time. WestJet Encore flights arrived at their destinations on schedule more than 90 per cent of the time in 2015—the best on-time performance record among North American regional airlines. Now that’s what I call positive disruption. Thank you for flying with us today.

FAMILY ADVENTURES Growing up, I was fortunate to have parents who loved to travel, and who believed, adamantly, in the importance of sharing that love with their kids. Not a summer went by without my mother and father carting us off on some sort of grand adventure—a Canadian road trip, an Alaskan cruise, a month of touring Western Europe. Those family expeditions, every single one of them, gave my brothers and me the opportunity to experience new things, to open our minds to places and cultures outside our own little worlds. Just as important, they allowed us to spend quality time together as a family, to grow

closer through shared discoveries and special moments—moments we still hold dear. In this issue of WestJet Magazine, we present ideas and inspiration for planning your own bond-building family trips. Starting on page 41, travel writer Michele Peterson shares her suggestions for multi-generational adventures in four of her favourite vacation destinations. And, beginning on page 50, Orlando writer Kristen Manieri reveals some of the cool, under-theradar things kids and parents (especially parents) can enjoy within her hometown—a city best known for its theme parks. We also lay out a three-day game plan for visiting Myrtle Beach (page 23), explore the history-rich island of Curaçao (page 60) and share advice for making the most of spring training season in Arizona (page 15). Wherever your travels take you this season, may some quality time with loved ones be part of the adventure.

W R I T E TO U S Want to share your travel tips or your thoughts on the magazine? Email me at editor@westjetmagazine.com.

BATTER UP! How to make the most of spring training season in Arizona.

aseball fans, it’s that time of year: time to take a break from winter and head to the Sonoran Desert to watch the spring rebirth of America’s favourite summer pastime. Last year, some 1.9 million people attended a spring training game in Arizona, drawn by the area’s surroundings and the chance to see their favourite Major League Baseball (MLB) team reborn with a new roster and renewed hope for a World Series title. Running throughout March and into early April, spring training in Arizona sees the 15 MLB teams in the Cactus League set up temporary residence in 10 stadiums throughout Greater Phoenix to practice before the start of the regular baseball season, and to play exhibition games. With legendary teams, affordable tickets and ballparks all within an hour’s drive of one another, a spring training trip is a dream come true for any baseball fan. Following are a few musts. SEEK TOP PICKS

TEMPE DIABLO STADIUM TEMPE

HOME TO: THE LOS ANGELES ANGELS be treated to a nice view of the Tempe Butte, a craggy rock formation that rises above left field. But watching an Angels game while lounging on the grass on the outfield concourse is just as sweet. Wherever you sit, be sure to enjoy a hot dog or burger here—both are said to be among the best in the Cactus League. AFTER THE GAME Keep up the beer theme on an Arizona Brewery Tour and cap your day at Four Peaks Brewery, voted Phoenix’s best brew pub in 2015.

SALT RIVER FIELDS SCOTTSDALE

HOME TO: THE ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS & COLORADO ROCKIES The spring training home for two MLB teams—the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies—Salt River Fields is one of the nicest stadiums in the Cactus League, and it’s also the first-ever MLB spring training facility to be built on reservation land. The modern complex sits on the edge of Scottsdale, on property belonging to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and its unique layout ensures you’ll get great views of the action (and the surrounding mountains) no matter where you sit, as well as plenty of shade from the hot

desert sun. This is also one of the best facilities for up-close-and-personal encounters with your favourites; the teams here offer many opportunities to interact with players and coaches, as well as intimate access to the 12 full-sized practice fields scattered along the walkway to the stadium’s entrance. AFTER THE GAME Take in the lively nightlife in Old Town Scottsdale, and be sure to make a stop at the Rusty Spur Saloon, the oldest bar in town.

SLOAN PARK MESA

HOME TO: THE CHICAGO CUBS The largest of the stadiums within the Cactus League, Sloan Park is the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs and was built in 2014 to resemble their beloved Wrigley Field. Arrive as the gates open to soak up the atmosphere and visit the many food trucks parked in a citrus grove inside the stadium. The food is an important part of this park, with a distinctly Chicagoan feel—start with a Chicago-style hot dog and finish with Giordano’s deep-dish pizza. The vibe here is fun and festive, with a dedicated kids’ zone, two party decks and

an easily accessed pathway between the Cubs’ clubhouse and the diamond that allows fans plenty of opportunities for seeking out players’ autographs. Adjacent to the stadium is Riverview Park, which is home to the world’s tallest ropeclimbing tower, a zipline and a splash pad for youngsters. AFTER THE GAME Head to the new STATS Sports Grill outside the stadium gates to soak up the fanfare with some hearty appies. —Jeff MacKinnon

Get to downtown Tempe with at least a couple of hours to spare before opening pitch, as the area is rife with good eats and cool shops. Plus, there’s free parking in designated lots downtown and a free trolley ride is available to the stadium. Enjoy an early lunch on one of three patios at Blasted Barley Beer Company, one block from the trolley, and take your pick of 28 craft beers on tap, plus several more made on-site at the microbrewery. At game time, fans on the first-base side of the stadium (the side with the Angels’ bullpen) will

SPRING TRAINING IN FLORIDA

When it comes to spring training destinations, Florida is your other option. Known as the Grapefruit League circuit, 15 of baseball’s MLB teams hold their annual spring training camps in the Sunshine State—three in central Florida and 12 near the coastlines, including the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin. We asked some experts to share their tips for fans planning to make the trek to Florida this spring or next:

1 ROBERTO ALOMAR Former Jays second baseman “Come early to the park, a few hours before the game, so you can get to meet some of the players—your favourites, as well as some of the minor league players. It’s nice to meet some of the guys before they make it to the big leagues.”

2 NICK GANDY Director of Communications, Florida Sports Foundation “If you park yourself in the Tampa area, you can see six different ballparks within an hour’s drive. Another great thing about all of the spring training parks is that you’re never more than an hour’s drive from a beach.”

3 JIM EASTON Loyal spring training spectator “I like going to the [Pittsburgh] Pirates training facility (in Bradenton, Fla.). You can watch as the coaches work with the players. Because it’s a practice, there’s no charge. They let you in around 9:30 in the morning and the players are very receptive to signing autographs.”—John McGrath

Since its launch in 2008, how has the company changed? In the early days, Airbnb grew fast and we were focused on growth, now we are focusing more on the entire experience and ensuring every booking, as a guest or host, is memorable. Historically, [Airbnb] has been centralized in the urban markets but we’re seeing growth in the vacation rental market. What sets Airbnb apart from other home-sharing sites? It’s the community. Airbnb’s

two-way review system allows people to build up an identity and reputation; it’s authentic and organic. Another difference is that 86 per cent of our listings are principal residences. How much do you travel? I’m back and forth between Airbnb HQ in San Francisco and Toronto, and pretty much every week I’m going across Canada, meeting with our host community and city officials. So, are you an Airbnb host? Yes, [for] almost two years now. But I’m not a Superhost.

SUPERHOSTS People who host at least 10 times a year, receive fivestar reviews at least 80 per cent of the time and rarely cancel on guests.

Favourite Canadian destination? Montreal, because there’s such a buzz and so many events; it ignites you. I also love exploring Vancouver and Calgary.

What makes Airbnb special? We’re so connected today online, [but] in some capacity it has disconnected us from the real world. I love the human component and that we are bringing back the connectedness we once had in villages. How is Airbnb changing the way we travel? The things you remember about your travels are those serendipitous experiences; a host-recommended restaurant or neighbourhood that wasn’t on the map. That’s what Airbnb does really well. And technology? We obviously have metadata on travel habits, but technology has brought [widespread] trust between strangers, with the ability to maintain communication and payments on a single platform. How is Airbnb keeping its competitive edge? Our mission is to make sure that all seven billion people in the world can feel like they belong anywhere. We want to increase the whole trip experience. —Diane Bolt

DATE BY NUMBERS WHEN IT COMES TO PERSONALIZED MATCHMAKING, OUR SUCCESS IS UNMATCHED!

24 YEARS Of changing lives one match at a time.

+ 2 MILLION

DATE SMARTER It’s rare to hear about a love story that starts on an airplane. When single, we all secretly wish that the romance of meeting someone while traveling just might happen to us.  min Tran’s idea of fnding love changed on a fight when he saw an ad for It’s Just Lunch, a personalized matchmaking service for busy professionals. The ad read like a good friend who could introduce him to single, professional women he wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet on his own. Today, Tran is married to his best IJL match Rebecca (Dunham) Tran. We sat down with Amin and Rebecca to learn about their dating experience, lifestyle, and why they chose to invest in their pursuit of relationship happiness.

wanted in a partner and fgure out what I did/ didn’t like about the date. It was helpful that they had screened the dates prior to me meeting them and did all the scheduling for me.

Where were you at in your life when you decided to join It’s Just Lunch?

Rebecca: Someone else did the planning and just let me know time and place. I was able to give feedback after each date. Best part of all? They introduced me to the perfect guy!

A

Rebecca: I had recently returned home from a sixmonth trip around the world and was transitioning to a new job. After being alone for a few years and watching all of my friends start to get married and have children, I decided I wanted to meet someone to share my life with. Amin: I was returning from a solo backpacking trip in Australia when I read an It’s Just Lunch story on the plane. My work and travel schedule was very demanding so I decided to join as their matchmakers were used to working with busy professionals. I wanted to meet intellectual, professional women who were different than those I was meeting at the usual scenes.

What’s it like working with an IJL matchmaker? Rebecca: I really enjoyed working with my matchmaker because I was able to speak to someone about what I

Amin: The IJL dating process helped me narrow down what I was really looking for in a woman — and not looking for! The date scheduling was fexible which worked with my busy lifestyle.

Best part about dating through IJL?

Amin: The quality of women and the element of surprise.

What would you tell a friend who was interested in IJL but tentative about making the investment? Rebecca: I have told many people about this service as it really works. It’s a better way to put yourself out there so you can meet someone who is serious about fnding someone special. Amin: I would say keep an open mind and much like life, you’ll get out what you put in. There is an excitement about meeting someone for the frst time after you have learned a little about their interests and lifestyle from your matchmaker.

ON THE RISE BOSTON’S FOOD SCENE KEEPS GETTING BETTER “Beantown” has moved beyond the staid and stale and is quickly earning a reputation as a burgeoning culinary centre. This gastronomic renaissance is being led in part by award-wining chefs like Barbara Lynch (recipient of the 2004 James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurateur) and Tim Maslow (one of Food & Wine’s 2015 “Best New Chefs”). But Boston’s ethnic enclaves deserve just as much credit, giving locals and visitors an array of mouth-watering options ranging from Brazilian and Haitian cuisine to Thai and Italian. There’s never been a better time to be a foodie in Boston. But don’t worry—if you really want one, you can still get a classic lobster roll, too (head for Yankee Lobster Company on the waterfront for the full effect).

YEW SEAFOOD + BAR Vancouver Last year, executive chef Ned Bell of the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver and YEW seafood + bar biked 8,700 kilometres across Canada to raise awareness about sustainable seafood. As founder of Chefs for Oceans—a not-for-profit dedicated to educating chefs and diners—he’s now lobbying to name March 18 Canada’s Sustainable Seafood Day. Bell encourages customers always to ask where their fish came from and if it is sustainable.

THE WHALESBONE OYSTER HOUSE Ottawa At Ottawa’s The Whalesbone Oyster House, executive chef Michael Radford only uses fish and shellfish certified by Ocean Wise, Vancouver Aquarium’s conservation program. The Whalesbone offers time-challenged diners ocean-friendly brown bag lunches (think fish rolls and chowder), and sells wholesale, so neighbouring restaurants can access sustainable species at affordable prices.

RIVER CAFÉ Calgary River Café owner Sal Howell pioneered sustainable seafood in Calgary before Ocean Wise even existed (although she became a founding partner in 2007). “My brother introduced me to Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program,” she explains. “The big issue then was salmon farming threatening wild stocks.” Howell made the bold move of removing salmon from her menu—one of the most popular fish orders—unless it’s in season.

RAYMONDS St. John’s, Nfld At Raymonds, chef Jeremy Charles recently hosted top Canadian and international chefs, in partnership with the Terroir Symposium, to showcase under-the-radar sustainable Atlantic species such as razor clams and whelk. The contingent also lobbied to legalize wharf-to-restaurant sales in Newfoundland, to let diners savour local fish typically reserved for export. “Now you can eat them right by the ocean where they were caught,” says Charles.

PARK Montreal Chopped Canada judge Antonio Park just became the first North American chef to use nanotechnology-preserved fish, which was developed by Japanese scientists and NASA experts. “It keeps the flesh and innards unbelievably firm and fresh, reducing waste,” he says. And Park is very committed to keeping waste to a minimum, using the whole fish: skin for chips, belly for tartare and bloodline for salumi di mare (seafood charcuterie).

MUST TRY: The Dungeness Crab Tacos. “They’re the bestselling item on the menu,” Bell says.

MUST TRY: Radford recommends the oysters with a mignonette or rum-laced cocktail sauce.

MUST TRY: A good choice at River Café is line-caught Pacific halibut or lingcod.

MUST TRY: The seafood soup, with fresh cod, shrimp, tomato, fennel and lemon aioli.

MUST TRY: The acupunctured snapper, which is incredibly tender. —Valerie Howes

BRITISH COLUMBIA WILD PACIFIC SALMON “Subtly varied textures and flavours.”

FEAST DRINK UP

DARK ’N STORMY

Spicy and uplifting, there’s nothing brooding about Bermuda’s national cocktail. dark molasses. In fact, the name Dark ’n Stormy is trademarked with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, so any drink calling itself by that name had better be using Black Seal. “There’s only one rum for a Dark ’n Stormy,” concurs Danny Gilbert, a bartender at Elbow Beach Resort on Bermuda’s southeast coast. He’s been making the drink following the original recipe since 1959 and loves how the smooth, sweet taste of the Black Seal rum complements the spicy Gosling’s ginger beer. As for the name, it’s said to have originated when an “old salt” (Navy speak for storyteller) remarked that the drink was the colour of “a storm cloud neither a fool nor a dead man would sail under.” In other words, dark and stormy.

BRIGHT AND SUNNY Pint and Jigger, Honolulu The Aloha state is rarely dark or stormy, so the Pint and Jigger has named its twist on Bermuda’s drink a Bright and Sunny. Such was the case with the Dark ’n Stormy cocktail, a spicy grog created in the late 1800s in Bermuda, when dark rum chanced to meet ginger beer at the Royal Naval Dockyard. In addition to ships, the dockyard housed a ginger beer bottling plant—ginger beer, lime juice and even rum were often rationed out to sailors in the hopes of preventing scurvy. One day, a sailor commented that, “A splash of rum was just what the ginger beer was missing.” The resulting concoction became the country’s national drink and was made exclusively with Gosling’s Black Seal rum, a Bermuda rum created from

Multi-generational trips of a lifetime Voyages multigénérationnels inoubliables

I

’m floating above a coral reef, my gaze following a school of striped sergeant major fish, when my nine-year-old grandson glides past and points to his discovery—a spiny lobster the size of a small tricycle. “Do you think Mom would let me use my souvenir money to go snorkelling again tomorrow?” he asks as we bob to the surface. “I’m sure she would,” I answer, thinking of the towering stack of plastic toys in their garage. Research has shown that choosing experiences over material goods can make you happier, so our conversation was quite a welcome surprise. When planning our Caribbean vacation, I’d expected to spend family time splashing in swimming pools together but hadn’t imagined sharing life lessons on a coral reef. I’m not alone in discovering the unexpected joys of multi-generational travel. An increasing number of families are seeking experiences that bring siblings, parents and grandparents closer. Following are some ideas for multi-generational trips of a lifetime.

J

WESTJET.COM | MARCH 2016

ireland IRLANDE

For history-loving families Pour les familles amatrices d'histoire

WHY GO

POURQUOI S’Y RENDRE

With its vistas of windswept cliffs, rich history and strong tradition of storytelling, Ireland offers a fascinating backdrop for a variety of family pursuits. Begin in Dublin, where children under 12 travel free on the double-decker Dublin Bus Hop-on Hop-off tour. Among the 33 stops is Dublinia, where kids can soak up Viking history while learning alphabet runes. There’s just enough gruesomeness in the medieval Black Death diorama to keep teens riveted, while preschoolers will have potty-humour fun at the Viking-age bathroom display (moss toilet paper— ew!). Continue your Nordic immersion with a visit to the Viking Triangle in Waterford, Ireland’s oldest settlement (and a prime spot for adults to invest in some crystal family heirlooms). Then a drive through emerald countryside takes you past a variety of castles and ruins and up to the Cliffs of Moher, where watching surfers ride 12-metrehigh waves on the Atlantic Ocean is an exhilarating thrill.

SPLURGE Castles are scattered throughout Ireland, but, for families, Ashford Castle near Galway is extra-special. Built in 1228, its moats, stone walls and turreted towers make it appear as though it’s been lifted from the movie Frozen (but, thanks to a major refurbishment, it’s minus the drafty corridors). The grounds are also home to Ireland’s first School of Falconry and, during a Hawk Walk, families can fly a Harris’s hawk, letting it swoop through the ancient forest at 60 kilometres an hour to snatch food from suitably gloved fingers.

SAVE The Croke Park Hotel’s location, 10 minutes north of the Dublin city centre, makes it perfect for families who want to visit the nearby Dublin Zoo, National Botanic Gardens or Croke Park stadium, which hosts Gaelic games like hurling. Kids will love amenities geared toward them, like teddy bears and pint-sized robes and slippers.

Anguilla For families who want to mix beach time with local culture Plage et culture locale en famille

WHY GO

POURQUOI S’Y RENDRE

From music and indigenous heritage to a lively cuisine scene, Anguilla—a short ferry ride from St. Martin—offers plenty of enriching experiences. Its 33 uncrowded white-sand beaches and warm Caribbean charm are added bonuses. Begin at The Amerindian Interpretation Centre and Trail, a new historic zone featuring interpretive trails, a straw hut, a subterranean cavern and 1,600-year-old artifacts of the island’s indigenous people on display in the reception area. On another day, head to The Dune Preserve, a funky seaside shack known for its barbecue and live music. Kids will enjoy exploring the eatery’s treehouse-style, driftwood construction, while adults can get a celebrity selfie with its owner, reggae legend Bankie Banx.

SAVE Everyone will feel at ease at the Anacaona Boutique Hotel situated at the Meads Bay beach. Relax in the pool or in a tropical garden hammock, then try snorkelling at the beach. WHERE TO STAY SPLURGE A top family stay is the Viceroy Anguilla, located near crescent-shaped Meads Bay. While some suites come equipped with family-friendly amenities such as fridges, microwaves and kitchen gear, they certainly don’t sacrifice glam in their contemporary decor. The resort’s activity menu includes a kids’ club, rock-wall climbing and, for teens, the opportunity to make jump shots on a basketball court that’s a fave of visiting NBA stars. A sparkling infinity pool with zero-entry access (no stairs) is ideal for seniors and toddlers. Dining is helmed by esteemed Miamiborn executive chef Rafael Gonzalez, who creates kids’ menus so delightful, they won’t even notice it’s healthy. (viceroyhotelsandresorts.com)

Palm Springs WHY GO

POURQUOI S’Y RENDRE

Set against a backdrop of whisky-hued desert, starry skies and violet foothills, the Greater Palm Springs area (a string of nine desert cities) goes beyond the usual family destination in terms of wow factor. No matter if your entourage includes the stroller crowd or grandma and grandpa, it offers a winning mix of luxury accommodations, nostalgic modernist history and outdoor attractions. Check out the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Desert where the new exhibit, Guardians of the Living Desert, injects some fun into education, offering pint-sized paleontologists the opportunity to dig for dinosaur fossils and teens the chance to take a selfie with a lifelike T. Rex. On another afternoon, go horseback riding through Palm Canyon where you might hear the beep-beep of roadrunners as they scurry along the rocky gorge.

WHY GO

POURQUOI S’Y RENDRE

Does your teen think the perfect vacation means shopping malls, video games and lots of battery life on their mobile devices? Then it’s time to pack the outdoor gear and head to Peterborough & the Kawarthas, a still-underthe-radar region just 90 minutes east of Toronto. Dotted with lakes, it offers enough excitement to entice even the most city-bound family. Go kite-boarding, float along the Trent-Severn Waterway or strap on some headlamps and go spelunking underground in the seven dripping Warsaw Caves. At the Canadian Canoe Museum, older kids can test their paddling skills by attempting to match the 50 to 60 paddle strokes per minute of a real voyageur, while the younger crowd can watch artisans showing off heritage skills like canoe-making and basket weaving. Parents and grandparents will enjoy reminiscing over Pierre Trudeau’s famous buckskin jacket and birchbark canoe.

T

en years ago, Orlando was synonymous with theme parks and waterslides. Don’t worry: those family favourites are still alive and well. But today, a new side of Orlando has emerged from under the shadows of the mouse, a grown-up version of the City Beautiful with an emphasis on art, culture and creative cuisine. From the new Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts—a crown jewel in Orlando’s city centre—to the thriving urban districts that let every part of Orlando’s personality fly, this destination is now certifiably hip.

I

DES QUARTIERS OÙ flâner Orlando’s booming neighbourhoods are no accident. They were spun from the City of Orlando’s Main Street Program, an initiative that began nearly a decade ago to help the city’s urban districts develop their own commercial hubs and unique characters. Today, scores of locally owned restaurants, shops and bars, plus a slew of monthly events, are evidence that the plan is working. Among Orlando’s must-visit ’hoods is Ivanhoe Village. Once known as the city’s historic Antique Row, the area still houses a handful of antique shops, but it’s now a hot spot for upcycled clothing and furniture stores, funky cafés and restaurants, and a lovely lakefront park where paddleboarders launch into Lake Ivanhoe throughout the day. Wander into Washburn Imports, where you’ll find exotic, imported furniture sold during the day, and an awesome and unexpected watering hole—Imperial Wine Bar—that comes to life at 5 p.m. For another eclectic district, head to Mills 50, which is best known for its international eats and city-sanctioned murals and graffiti art. Here you’ll find Cuban cuisine intersecting with Vietnamese and Thai at the Black Bean Deli, Hawkers Asian Street Fare and Tako Cheena. You’ll also find the opportunity to participate in a full moon (or new moon) drum circle at Dandelion Communitea Cafe, listen to a local band at long-time favourite Will’s Pub or sip a glass of wine at Quantum Leap Winery, which blends delectable wines and showcases local artists on its walls. In quiet College Park, artful shopping is at the forefront thanks in part to a new gallery-style space called The Shoppes of College Park, where 11 vendors offer a unique array of merchandise, from garden succulents to wall art. For more local flavour, head to Audubon Park, a residential neighbourhood that boasts pretty gardens, wild peacocks and a cool retro vibe. Music-lovers will enjoy indie music store Park Ave CDs, which stocks hundreds of new and used CDs, LPs and posters, while dessert-lovers shouldn’t miss P is for Pie Bake Shop, which creates some of the best pies in the city.

WESTJET.COM | MARCH 2016

PIG FLOYD’S URBAN BARBAKOA

P IS FOR PIE BAKE SHOP

{ORLANDO}

CUISINE TO SAVOUR Exploring everything from contemporary Asian fusion to Southern comfort food with a modern twist, Orlando restaurants are steadily transforming the local culinary scene into a food-lover’s paradise. With its international spin on Southern barbecue fare, Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa in Mills 50 has created diehard fans relentlessly hungry for this no-frills restaurant’s Asian, Latin and Caribbean-inspired tacos and platters piled high with brisket, ribs and roast chicken. Of the sandwich selections, The Big Floyd is a must, but bring your A-game appetite, as this tangy mélange of brisket, pulled pork and sausage is as filling as it is tasty. For something a little more upscale, head to Thornton Park, where chef Greg Richie rules the roost with two gems: Soco, a Southern restaurant with progressive leanings and Baoery Asian Gastropub, which opened last fall and serves an eclectic variety of casual Asian small plates while old kung fu movies show on screens throughout the restaurant. Located inside the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes, Whisper Creek Farm: The Kitchen and The Brewery is an in-house, first-of-its-kind nano-brewery producing craft beer made from grown-onsite ingredients. Sip on seasonal beers in the ultra-cozy, rustic space, and dine on small plates of elevated pub grub designed to pair perfectly with the house brews. Cross your fingers that the slightly hoppy and refreshing Surplus Honey Citrus Ale, a pale ale infused with honey harvested at the resort, is on tap.

RIDE THE CULTURE TRAIL If you’re an active traveller with an appreciation for art, consider biking the Seminole Wekiva Trail (north of downtown), where you’ll be awed by the miles of fenceline showcasing more than 500 paintings, many conveying the artist’s (Jeff Sonksen) love for pop culture.

HIP ROAD TRIPS Three more Central Florida spots to explore. It’s worth taking a day (or even just an afternoon) out of your Orlando vacation to visit any of these nearby highlights:

MARCH 2016 | WESTJETMAGAZINE.COM

YBOR CITY An historic district in Tampa known for its cigar-making past, Ybor City has lots to offer, including a fascinating cigar industry walking tour, vintage shops, the Tampa Bay Brewing Company and Florida’s oldest eatery—the original Columbia Restaurant. A slice of oldmeets-new that’s easily reached by car or the TECO Line Streetcar.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH Boutique shopping and stellar dining selections have given the slightly sleepy beach town of New Smyrna Beach a wake-up call. Definitely enjoy this Atlantic-side stretch of sandy beach, but also be sure to stroll along Flagler Avenue and Canal Street, two separate commercial hubs with one-off shops and quirky cafés.

ORMOND BEACH Located just north of Daytona Beach, the much quieter Ormond Beach (once a winter retreat for billionaire John D. Rockefeller) offers eclectic boutiques and dining in the Ormond Beach Main Street district, canoeing and fishing at Tomoka State Park, and a city bus service that takes riders between Ormand Beach and Daytona Beach.

COCKTAILS TO SIP

HANSON’S SHOE REPAIR PHOTO BY PATRICK MICHAEL CHIN

DES COCKTAILS À SIROTER Orlando’s cocktail scene has reached incredible heights—especially downtown. Here, the worlds of food and spirits have merged thanks to a strong movement toward drinks that are no longer simply mixed, but crafted. Proudly concocting their own sodas, mixologists at The Courtesy keep an arsenal of herbs and spices at the ready for their impressive list of specialty cocktails served in the stately yet fanciful bar in downtown Orlando. Try the French Bengal made with Bluecoat Gin, Herbsaint absinthe, Darjeeling tea syrup, chamomile water and lemon. Across the street and up a steep flight of stairs, The Woods’ bartenders unfurl a selection of seasonally inspired cocktails—like the Sasquatch, made with Vida mezcal, Carpano Bianco, St. Germain and mushroom bitters— from behind a gargantuan wood bar housing more than 200 whiskies, 50-plus gins and nearly 70 craft beers. In the mood for something different? Just like a true speakeasy, Hanson’s Shoe Repair is tucked clandestinely on the third floor of Pine Street’s NV bar and recreates the Prohibition-era secret cocktail culture. Call in advance and snag the password for entry. Once a 19th-century shoe shop, the bar resides in one of Orlando’s oldest buildings and fits just 20 to 30 visitors inside the exposed brick-walled space and outdoor rooftop courtyard.

The 70,000-square-foot attraction features 25 hands-on activities designed to engage and inspire budding Picassos for hours. Budding Sherlocks, meanwhile, will enjoy Escapology, a cool attraction where you must solve puzzles and clues in order to sleuth your way out of a locked room in 60 minutes or less. For some quiet time, stroll through downtown’s Lake Eola Park, where funky new sculptures surround the green space. Or take a ride in the Orlando Eye and get a bird’s-eye view of all that awaits in the city and beyond.

Greater Palm Springs is an oasis of elegant midcentury modern architecture, design and fashion.

The region is known for its excellent museums and art galleries and its nearperfect examples of midcentury modern design and architecture. Inspired by the region’s natural beauty and unique character, mid-20th century designers like Albert Frey and John Lautner created residences, hotels and civic buildings that are considered some of the most iconic examples of this linear, uncluttered architectural form.

Guided or self-guided public art tours are a popular pastime in cities like Indio, La Quinta and Palm Desert, as are annual arts festivals including the outdoor La Quinta Arts Festival in March and the Indian Wells Arts Festival each April. The renowned American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs is a favourite with serious film buffs, while the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival in Palm Desert is a a must-see for fans of stylized cinema.

families, and the Island has unusual activities like bungee trampolining and bungee jumping, ziplining and even tree-top obstacle courses. Walking and hiking are popular activities, from multi-day treks on the West Coast Trail in Pacific Rim National Park to relaxed rambles among giant Douglas fir trees in Cathedral Grove. The most ancient of these trees are more than 800 years old, and the largest exceeds nine metres in circumference. The mountainous spine that runs the length of Vancouver Island offers beautiful views and plenty of challenges for adventurers. The higher elevations are still snowy in March, but as the season eases toward summer climbing comes into season, with several technical and non-technical routes. In Strathcona Provincial Park near Port Alberni, the hardy can boat and hike to Della Falls, Canada’s highest waterfall, at 440 metres. If lower elevations are your preference, try going all the way underground—guided caving tours are family-friendly and unforgettable. Comox Valley is a popular destination for mountain bikers at all levels, who can explore the varied and well-maintained trails in Comox Valley, Campbell River and Hornby Island, independently or as part of a guided tour.

Sidney, BC is the gateway to your Vancouver Island adventure. Below is a suggested itinerary for the perfect Spring or Summer day in this vibrant seaside town. To fully experience all that Sidney and the surrounding region has to offer you need to spend at least two days to soak it all in. Rich in history and surrounded in natural beauty, Sidney is the gateway to Vancouver Island. Complete with a vibrant boutique-shopping district (1) and many quaint dining options, you won’t know where to start. To complete the Sidney experience, Victoria Distillers, the only waterfront distillery on Vancouver Island will open in May 2016. Complete with a tasting room and cozy lounge with sweeping views of Mount Baker and the Salish Sea the distillery will impress even the most discerning libation connoisseur. The waterfront in Sidney offers many experiences including the Town’s sculpture walk (2) and historic walking tour. Be sure to visit with local fishermen as you stroll down the iconic Sidney fishing pier (3). You can also hop

on a whale watching (4) or guided kayak tour right from the waterfront. If you want to visit the nearby wine region, you can do so on your way to the world-famous Butchart Gardens, only a 15-minute drive from Sidney. If you happen to be visiting during the summer season, you can enjoy a host of special events including the Sidney Street Market (Thursday nights May to September), Summer Sounds outdoor concerts (Sundays July & August) and the Torque Masters Car Show Extravaganza (August) just to name a few. Be sure to catch a show at Mary Winspear Centre (5), the art & culture hub of Sidney. Sidney is known as Canada’s only Booktown so be sure to peruse the 5 independent bookstores during your visit. If you are bringing little ones, the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre (6) aquarium offers a special hands-on experience not to be missed.

wonder Vancouver Island is so ecologically rich. The Island is home to 200 types of migratory birds and more than 30 species of land mammal, including the Roosevelt elk—not to mention teeming marine life. Wildlife viewing is a favourite pastime here, from birding to bear-watching, and it’s not uncommon to spot eagles, orcas, otters, seals, sea lions, migratory birds and tide pool life all along Vancouver Island’s coast. Boat-based excursions let you watch bears from a safe distance, and you can spot black bears near Tofino or Campbell River.

The laid-back Ucluelet Aquarium in Pacific Rim National Park takes sea stars, kelpfish, abalone and other specimens from the waters of Barkley and Clayoquot Sounds, and returns them when the aquarium shuts for seasonal maintenance in December. Naturally, whale watching is a major activity on Vancouver Island, and several tour operators offer boat excursions to view grey whales, orcas and humpback whales from May through mid-October in Victoria and the North Island, and February through mid-October in Tofino and Ucluelet. If you’re lucky, you might spot a minke whale at world-renowned wildlifewatching site Telegraph Cove. The Pacific Rim Whale Festival, running March 12 to 27, celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2016. This event welcomes the arrival of some 20,000 grey whales as they make their way from the Baja Peninsula to Alaska’s Bering Strait. The festival features inspirational talks, interpretive walks, First Nations cultural workshops and more. Need more information? Visit Tourism Vancouver Island at vancouverisland.travel.

IN THE SEAT POCKET IN FRONT OF YOU DANS LA POCHETTE DU SIÈGE DEVANT VOUS

If you are a frequent flyer, the instructions to take out the safety features card and follow along while some very important information is reviewed should sound familiar. Graphically designed to ensure the safety-card information is accessible no matter what age a flyer is or which language they speak, safety feature cards have become synonymous with commercial airline travel and are coveted by aviation enthusiasts. As we welcome new aircraft into our fleet with new seat-back pockets, we had the perfect opportunity to redesign our safety features card. Like last year’s calendar, the previous one was dated. So, please reach into the seat pocket in front of you and follow along.

REFORMATTED

Here are a few of the nostalgic items we did away with:

No longer with an accordion fold, the new card is larger with images on both sides.

THE RADIO ICON

We love a retro beat box as much as the next person, but MP3 players and smart phones have made our music more portable.

2

LAMINATED

This will help with the longevity of the card and reduce the number we need to print.

3

UPDATED With new equipment, the images better represent our current fleet.

MISE À JOUR

Les images représentent mieux les nouveaux appareils.

4

MODERNIZED Fewer pant suits and ties.

MODERNISÉE

Moins de complets-cravate.

THE BRIEFCASES ICON

We had a lot of briefcases on our previous safety features card. You’ll notice fewer of these work bags on the new card and some have even been replaced by a camera. A good work-life balance.

THE FLIP-PHONE ICON

Flip phones were sleek back in the day, but it’s time to fold them up.

THE LIGHTER ICON

Save those for a best-of concert in a town near you.
